Aired May 12, 2024: WisdoMania Fest: A Free Event Brings Self-Care and Mental Wellness to LA. Two nonprofits are teaming up for a two-day event dedicated to mental well-being, self-care, creativity, and fun. WisdoMania Foundation and Tangible Movement have planned this new event, WisdoMania Fest, to take place on the evenings of May 17 and May 19, with two very different nights in two different locations. Headlined by artist/songwriter X. ARI as well as Torri Shack, an advocate for mental health, suicide prevention, and trans issues. The two evenings of WisdoMania Fest are intended to lead attendees toward a sense of constructive peace and transformational self-awareness.

“WisdoMania Fest aspires to become the Coachella of Wellness,” says X. ARI, “Where thousands of people can unite to heal and celebrate the arts, the LGBT+ community and allies, and heal collectively.” Potential attendees should know what to expect from Coachella-like events in California.

In this podcast: Lisa Foxx talks to Torri Shack of Tangible Movement. He shares his story and how he hopes WisdoMania Fest will help people in so many ways. Find out more here: https://wisdomaniafoundation.com/wisdomaniafest/

Hi, is is Lisa Fox andthis is the iHeart So Cal Show.
All right. So May is mentalHealth Awareness Month and two nonprofits are coming
together for a two day event happynext Friday and Saturday, dedicated to mental
well being, self care, creativityand fun. The Wisdowmania Foundation and Tangible
Movement have plan this new event calledwisdom Mania Fest. It'll be taking place

(00:24):
on the evenings of Friday May seventeenthand Sunday May nineteenth, headlined by artists
songwriter Xri as well as Tory Shack. This event, they hope, will
be an immersive mental health and artsfestival in support of Mental Health Awareness Month
and the LGBTQ plus community. AndI've got Tory Shack on to tell us
all about it. Hi, Tory, Hey, I'm going. Tory is

(00:45):
an advocate for mental health, suicideprevention, and trans issues and sounds like
you. You'll have put a lotof work into these, these two big
nights to help a lot of people. You intend to lead people towards a
sense of constructive peace and transformational selfawareness. I love it. I'm ready.
I want to dive in. GreatIt's going to be a lot of
fun and another great part about itis that it's free, free, free

(01:07):
to attend, so that means youreally do want to help people. I
mean, making money is nice, but just helping people for Mental Health Awareness
Month is a beautiful thing. Sothank you for that first of all.
But it had to be a lotof hard work to put this all together.
Is it the first one? Yeah, it's a lot of hard work
because it's just the two of usand we're putting it all together ourselves.
It is. This is a thirdone. This is the second one I
have partnered on with We had withthe Mania Fast twenty twenty three last year,

(01:30):
which is a huge success, andwe decided to break it up this
year into two full two full daysbecause one full day didn't seem to be
enough. So we're actually adding moreprograms to this year to make it a
lot more fun and enjoyable for everybodyin all ages. Got it? Got
it? Now? Do you wantto talk about Xri and her foundation?
I know she's out of the country, so she can we can do a

(01:51):
double whemmy phone interview, but atouch on her story and her foundation and
how you all came together for this. Yeah. So x Ray is a
queer musician that's with bipolar disorder. She didn't see a fulfilling life ahead when
when she was first diagnosed, andsince starting her mental health advocacy in twenty
sixteen, she was speaking at schoolswith nominees the National Lines and Mental Illness
and teeming up with nonprofits. Shefound her calling and is inspired by her

(02:15):
journey. She launched a nonprofit thatmerges the arts for self care and mental
health to help others find purpose andmeaning to the throne challenges, which is
Wisdomania Foundation. You can find outmore about her organization wisdomania Foundation dot com.
But of course we hope that yougo to the event and really dive
in to the workshops that y'all areoffering. There's workshops, there's comedy,
there's singer songwriting. I mean, there's a lot going on that weekend.

(02:38):
Yeah, So let me tell youa little bit more about it. Particular
things off on May seventeenth from fivepm to eight pm at Rhith Park.
The evening is going to have flowyoga, ecstatic dance, a relaxing soundback
and then moves into some fun livemusic from Chloe start seven thirty. And
then the second day, which isSunday, May nineteen, it's going to
focus on what we call mental entertainment, and that's happening May nineteenth, starting

(03:00):
at four thirty pm at Catch onein LA. We're going to dive into
our Songwriting for Wellness workshop at fivepm, followed by a mental health panel
at seven pm, and then we'regonna get right to laugh at queer comics
and then Captain night off with someincredible life performances. I was gonna say,
I like the idea of comedy aftermental health panel sounds probably like a
good a good mix, a goodbalance there, right, You might need

(03:22):
that after all the serious talk, because you got to include some some serious
talks. You do want to helpget to the root of some people's issues
and help them heal one thousand percent, and we'd like to do that through
live experience. So that's what thepanels all about. People have lived experience
speaking about you know, what theyhave done as far as and that's a
health space, how they manage theirday to day life living with mental illness,

(03:42):
and yeah, having some fun afterwardsas a delight. Yet the mood
is exactly what we have in mindtory. What types of people are you
hoping you're going to attend Wisdom manifestnext weekend. Who are you hoping to
draw? Yeah, it's open toall agents and all like everybody, we're
focusing more or less on the queercommunity, So we're going to have our
focus as more or less queer communitybased, but everybody is welcome. Got

(04:05):
it? And your organization Tory TangibleMovement touch on that and how like when
did you when did you? Whendid that become your calling? Great?
Yeah, great question. So Iam a true time attempted suicide survivor.
I am recovering an alcoholic. I'ma person living with a mental illness.
I have recovered from an eating disorder. Let's see, I mean I touch

(04:26):
off all the boxes. Oh,I'm a trans man. So what happened
was after my last suicide attempt,I ended up finally getting stable after seventeen
years of being you know, misdiagnosedand really kind of like giving into the
stigma of mental illness and not wantingto talk about it. So I came
to about twenty sixteen when I wasproperly diagnosed and got stable. I started

(04:46):
tensi Well Movement to help end thestigma around mental illness and talking about it.
And we're basically we're dedicated to supportingthose impacts by mental health issues,
suicidality, addiction, gender inequality, and gbtq AA equity. We use real
life experiences to foster resilience to recoveryand we do that by partnering the schools,
businesses, and communities. We aimthe boost awareness and provide key resources,

(05:10):
trainings and workshops. Thank you forsharing that, Tori. And can
I ask what, Mike, howdid you figure out? Can I ask
what is your mental illness? Whatis it? Oh? Yeah, sure?
I have bipoor type two. Andthat was the thing is when I
was being diagnosed throughout my entire life, people kept saying the doctor's type,
saying is bipolar. I didn't identifywith that and it wasn't until twenty sixteen
that a doctor educated me that therewas actually four types of bipolar. My

(05:32):
symptoms were the closestes to bipolar typetwo. And can you share what that
is or what that means? Yeah? Sure, So bipolar type two is
called hypomania, and what that isis I go into hypomanic episodes. So
it could and it could look likeimpulsive spending or by poor rage that's the
thing, or you know, hypereven hyper sexuality, let's just say that.

(05:56):
But it goes into a mania whereI'm not disassociated from you know,
life, I'm not in a psychosis. But then what happens is after that
hypomanic episode, I fall into adeep depressive episode for a long period of
time. It to be days toweeks, even months, but the hypomania
is usually short lived. In comparisonto buy poorer type one, where people
go generally love to psychosis bipolar typetwo, we just have hypomanic episodes.

(06:19):
And this is all minus any drugsor alcohol, because people can kind of
get all confused too, right orthat's not obviously, Yeah, yeah,
that's right. I give presentations tolaw enforcement actually about this and about how
to help de escalate people with thatthey come across who are mentally ill and
help decipher between these people who arejust on drugs and people who are mentally

(06:40):
ill. Yeah, I mean, you know, that's you know, not
to reference this and tied into ourhomeless situation right now in southern California.
But it's confusing, you know, and as a person who wants to help
help people, it can be scaryand confusing when you don't really know what's
going on, and it's easy toassume it's drugs and alcohol. That person
probably is on something, But therecould be a medical issue, you know,

(07:01):
or a mental issue that's you know, too big for just regular,
everyday normal people like me to diagnoseit. It needs a real diagnosis and
real treatment and real care. It'sjust like what you got once diagnosed,
Tory. Now, are you onlike a medication that kind of helps keep
you keeps you balanced? Oh?Yeah, I'm heavily medicaid like a pharmacy
b exactly. I don't know.I don't advocate for or against medications,

(07:26):
but I can tell you for myselfit's healthy life. See that's I mean,
it's good to hear that there's hopeon the other side, right that
you're not stuck with this crazy brainif there are medications and treatments for that
can help you no normalized, soyou can actually be you and live a
life and live a life and doit and help others like you're doing with
yours. Yeah. And that's thething is like all since I was fourteen,

(07:47):
that was my first suicide attempt,I've been on and off medications my
entire life. None of them works, that never was really diagnosed properly.
So I would say that people outthere don't give up. If medication seems
to be you know you or downyour path, just keep trying. There
is hope at the end of thetunnel. You can live a life that
is fulfilling with an illness. Andit's all about recovery and doing healthy things

(08:09):
to help yourself, like in themoment and just in general in life.
Tori, if people want to findout more about your story or ask if
you can do a speaking engagement, can they just find out more at your
Tangible Movement website Tangiblemovement dot org orthey can find us on Instagram at Tangible
Movement And then also with the ManiaFoundation, you can just go to them
and visit them on Instagram at withDominia Foundation. Can you share any some

(08:33):
positive, any success stories or youknow, positive vibes from the people that
you've interacted with or you know, tried to help over the years and with
your organization, I mean, doesit make you feel like, oh,
we can really make a difference here. Yeah. Actually, fun fact,
I don't know if you know whoMiguel is the artist. Miguel Sure.
So, Miguel the artist was fora while my one of my ambassadors.
In a previous life, I wasa personal trainer for about ten years and

(08:56):
I travel all over the Western worldwith artists like Miguel and Minolrigy as their
wellness and personal trainer. So Miguelwas one of our and astors for a
while, and he went into hisHe got to go into his alma mater
and tell his story and to theentire school, which absolutely chance formed,
you know, the lives of someof the students in there, and we're

(09:16):
and the parents. So that wasreally awesome. As far as I'm concerned
myself, I have also gone inI've gown in many many schools, and
I've gone into many corporations, toldmy story from you know, my own
perspective. And also I also teachresilience training and workshops on how to empower
yourself to overcome you know, baddays or bad enoughtal health moments, and
a lot of it is through basicwellness, you know, just keeping yourself

(09:37):
fit and healthy and active. Ashard as it is, You've got to
keep the seat moving and the brainwill follow. Yes, I like it.
And then you know again like allthese events that you're doing, all
these activities that you're doing, itwas domaniuffest. I mean it sounds like
again you're trying to tie this alltogether just to give people options of maybe
different ways that they may want tobetter cope with an issue that they're dealing

(09:58):
with. Right, get some tools, it's a better cope, you know,
do a little healing and have alittle fun. Yeah, it's about
celebrating, you know, mental healththrough a fun mixed wealth's activities, arts
and entertainment. Like it's a festivalthat really aims to turn personal challenges into
strengths, easing creativity and education anda strong sense of community. And I'm
betting too people who who will beattending on May seventeen, the May nineteenth

(10:18):
to as the manifest that they aregoing to make some new friends there and
people who might be going through similarstruggles. Oh, one thousand percent.
It's a really welcoming, open environmentand especially with the songwriting the wellness workshop
that's going to be held on Sunday, May nineteenth, You'll make some really
awesome friends in there who are supersuper dedicated to mental health. And it's
just a really fun environment, funplace, safe space, inclusive space to

(10:39):
be in, especially during celebrating mainmental health run this month. Sure,
and thank you again to you andX sorry for all that you're doing to
help people on so many levels. This sounds like an amazing, very transformative
event. And again it's free, free, free, So if you're able
