Speaker 1 (00:01):
Shrock Innovations presents the midwest number one independent computer repair
company with service centers and Lincoln, oh Maha, Papillion, Des Moines,
and across the country via the Shrock Desk. This is
compute This.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Good morning, folks, welcome in to compute this. My name
is Thor Schrock. I'm the owner of the Shrock Innovations
computer company. Like the big voice guy said there, we're
all over the place, all over the map. You can
hit us up in Lincoln, Omaha, Papillion, West Des Moines, Iowa.
We are going to be closed on Labor Day, so
you can't hit us up. Then you can try. You

(00:35):
can leave a voicemail, you can send an email. No
one's gonna check it. It's the one time in the
year I'll be like, we're not going to respond to you.
And it's okay, but no. All the service centers are
obviously open Saturday and Sunday. We will be closed on
Monday for Labor Day, and then we'll reopen again on Tuesday.
Lots and lots of new faces in the Omaha service

(00:57):
center on Tuesday. We're having like a training extrava game
in there on Tuesday. So if you want to be
part of a training extravaganza. Definitely come to Omaha on Tuesday.
If you would rather avoid a training extravaganza, go to
Papilion on Tuesday. Now we have some new front desk
people starting. We're training him as a group up front.

(01:17):
We also have new technicians starting and transfer technician from Lincoln,
so experience, but a new face none nevertheless, so good
stuff there. Welcome to Omaha. Burrough starting his University of
Nebraska Omaha career. So he's gonna keep working for us
as his schedule allows. What we appreciate that. Also in
upcoming news, I want to just start putting a bug

(01:39):
in your ear because you're gonna forget and then you're
gonna come one day and you're gonna be like, what
in the world is happening here? So I may have
mentioned that we hired a new HR person, and you know,
over the years, lots has changed to truck. We're big
enough now that we actually need a full time HR
person to manage our people, just to manage the staff.

(02:03):
We're we're that big now. And when we originally designed yeah, yeah,
it's a good problem to have. When we designed the
service centers originally We intentionally did not put any offices
in the service centers. There are no offices. There's nowhere
an employee can go and close the door and not
be part of what's happening in the room. That was
done very much by design. There's a designated break area,
but it's open air. So you you know, when you

(02:27):
when you're a manager, you can't go in the manager's
office and close the door and then just you know,
leave your staff defend for themselves. And I've seen that
happen in restaurant a lot. I didn't want that happening
in my service centers. Unfortunately, HR people need an office
because you have like records and stuff, and you know,
sometimes you have to have that conversation and people get
a little you know, emotional or something.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
You know.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
I so, yeah, we need we need an office for
the new HR person. So we're gonna build that in
the Omaha Service Center. We're going to construct an office.
And so the Lovely Kimberly was getting the you know,
we're getting the bids from the contractors and she's like,
these bids are just outright, like thirty thousand dollars to
build a nine by ten office. It's only two walls.

(03:07):
We're putting it in a corner that already exists. It's
only two walls. The HVAC is like a six foot
duct off of an existing run that already has event there.
I mean, what is going on thirty thousand dollars? So
you know, we get the contractors individually in there and
start talking to them and we find out no, no,
it's like half that. So we're like, okay, all right,
we're gonna make this happen. But to do this, we're

(03:30):
gonna have to close down the front lobby of the
Omaha Service Center for about four weeks. And as part
of that, the Lovely Kimberly said, it's not fair to
our customers to shut this down for four weeks up
front and not give them something in return. And she said,
you know our look, our color scheme, our design. Now,
if you go online, I want you to go online

(03:51):
when you're bored later today or when you hit the
end of the Internet on Monday, because there's no new
content coming out. Do a quick search like a you
a Pinterest, or do a search with Google image search
or duck image or whatever you use. Look for pictures
of computer service centers. I guarantee you're gonna see peg board.

(04:11):
There's gonna be a pegboard somewhere with hooks in it.
You're gonna see that slat wall stuff, you know what
I'm talking about, where you can like put the hooks
directly in the wall. And there's gonna be something hanging
that no one has bought in so long. It's like
an LPT printer cable. It's like it's been there. It's
like twenty nine to ninety seven, and you know it's
been hanging on the wall since nineteen ninety six. You

(04:31):
know that's what you're gonna find. So our service center
looks pretty sharp compared to the competition, right, but you
know there's the whole we don't coast thing. And you know,
so she's like, if we're gonna shut down the whole
front and we have to move the front desk anyway
to accommodate this new office, why don't we take this
opportunity to do a refresh, same color scheme, just different

(04:54):
organization of the colors, a little more stylish, little more modern,
a little bit more higher end. And uh, you know,
the TV's on the wall are great, we love them,
but maybe we don't need nine of them. Thor I'm like,
that's my answer to everything. We gotta fancy something up,
can put a screen on it, you know, make it,
make it fancy, any fancy you want. Then what are
we gonna do at the front of the front desk?
Wouldn't it be cool if the whole front edge of

(05:15):
the front desk was a screen like one of those
giant screens when you walk into a building and the
whole wall is a screen like that, And the lovely
Kimberly is like, the answer is not always more screen.
Thor I'm like, well, that's probably the only answer I have.
So shes she just pass me on the head. That's okay,
that's why I'm here. And so so she's got some
really really cool things planned for that service center we're

(05:37):
talking to the Yeah, I'm not gonna spill the beans, okay.
But the biggest thing from your perspective that you're gonna
love about this design is she knows there's an echo
in there. She knows that the echo is bad and
the echo will be gone when she's done. So that
that if you get two customers in the front of

(05:58):
the Omaha service center and you're talking to both of
them at the same time in the phone rings. Maybe
it's just me with my bad left ear, but I
can't really. I have trouble picking out the conversation among
the noise because there's so many echoes and reverbs and everything.
And you know, somebody in their heart of hearing has
the same problem. So she's done some research into how
to kill the My solution was to build giant four

(06:19):
by eight acoustic ceiling tiles and mount them from the
ceiling and you know, kill the echo. And she's like, well, yeah,
that's a choice. You know, that's a choice you could
do A person could A person could do that, or
a person could get these amazing stylized tiles for the
wall that have an actual like design element to them

(06:39):
that you can get in the same colors as your company,
and actually maybe put a light effect above it, casting
an led shine down the wall across the tile things,
the little skinny tiles. And I thought, oh, that would
look good, and she's like, I know. I'm like all right,
all right, So I'm just getting out of the way.
I'm getting out of the way and letting her do
her thing. And so as is the Omaha service and

(07:01):
it will have some disruption coming in the near future.

Speaker 4 (07:03):
Here.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
I think we're starting a September eighth on that construction.
So in the meantime you'll be going in the employee
entrance on the other side to a modified front area
that'll be very much compressed and very small. But it's
only for four weeks and we're gonna we're gonna make
it work together. In other news this week, I got
a panic text messages from my ops manager today. I'm
walking out of Shields on Friday on date Day, my

(07:26):
wife my phone and I look at it and Parker
says two five h two is dropping. And I'm like, wait,
what The earliest read that we had on that was October?
What the and I look in Sure enough two five
h two was dropping. But it was the final preview build.
So if your computer was set up to receive preview builds,

(07:47):
you're getting two five h two right now now, none
of you. Let's just put it this way, if your
computer was set to receive preview builds, you would know it.
It's something you very intentionally have to do to your computer.
So you're not getting preview builds. None of you are
going to get two five h two yet on Windows eleven.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, every year,
Microsoft pushes out a new update for their operating system. Uh,

(08:11):
there are no updates for Windows ten anymore. There are
no feature upgrades if you have Windows ten. There is
no two to five h two for Windows ten coming
in October. Windows ten is dead in October. There aren't
any security updates coming for you in October, let alone
a feature update giving you new functionality. So this new

(08:33):
You know, every year they put out a pack, and
twenty five is the year. That's twenty twenty five h
two is a throwback to the nomenclature because they used
to do a half one and a half two. They
did this twice a year before with Windows ten. When
Windows eleven came out, they dropped it to once a year.
So this is the annual big Boy update. This is
literally giving you an entire new operating system. Effectively, you're

(08:55):
going from Windows eleven to Windows twelve, and it's just
going to automatically install on your computer. And I'm sure
it's going to be fine, right and you know this.
The update is being delivered a little bit differently this
time than previous updates. In fact, many of you already
have all the core elements of two to five h
two already downloaded to your computers, or if you don't,

(09:15):
you will soon. Microsoft is pre downloading it to everybody's
computer so that on release day they just flip a
switch and everybody's computer says you need to reboot to
install the latest update, and then it reboots and everybody's
got two five h two, or everybody who reboots successfully
has two five h two. So we're not going to

(09:36):
spend a ton of time on what is going to
be in two five h two, how it's going to work,
what it's going to change on your computer. We will
have plenty of time to get into that in the
coming weeks. The reason I am bringing it up today
is because today is the final day for the maintenance
checkup special. This is the final day my voice on
the air today, which is August thirty first. I don't

(10:01):
know why. It's all over The website ends August thirty first,
So some radio stations hear this broadcast after August thirty first.
If it's after August thirty first, you already missed it.
It's already done. Yeah, that's not nice. I shouldn't do that.
We shouldn't be mean. All right, here's what we're gonna
do if you're hearing this after August. First, we're gonna
take down the marketing off the website, so there's no

(10:22):
big hey, it's mean and it's trick up special, but
we'll leave it on the specials page for you so
that if you you're.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
Like, oh no, the word did I missed it?

Speaker 2 (10:29):
You didn't miss it, but you need to move on
it today because tomorrow it will be gone. So essentially,
if you're hearing this in Lincoln, you have today, like now,
today until like you know, midnight or whatever, and then
then it's gone. But that'll be the last maintenance check
up sale of twenty twenty five. So obviously, being you know,

(10:52):
around a holiday weekend, you probably have better things to
do with your time than to rush your computer into
a service center this afternoon. So I would encourage you
to go to Shocking Innovations dot com, click on shop
and specials, and pick up a prepaid maintenance checkup certificate.
How this works is you essentially are buying the maintenance
checkup now at the sale price, and then you redeem

(11:13):
the certificate anytime that's convenient for you in the next
six months in the service center, so you bring it
on in. If you want to be part of our
training operation, you can bring it into the Omaha Service
Center on Tuesday and say I'd like a maintenance checkup please,
even though it's September second and the sale end at
August thirty first, but I have a certificate, so got
to do it for me, and we will, and we'll

(11:33):
check you in and we'll get your maintenance checkup done
and get it right back to you. So the beautiful
thing about this is you can pick those certificates up
on the website. You can get as many as you need.
There is no limit on the number of certificates. If
you have multiple computers, or maybe you have a son,
a daughter, a grandson, a granddaughter who's planning on coming
back from college for the holidays over the Thanksgiving break,
for example, pick up a maintenance certificate, have them bring

(11:55):
their computer back with them, of course, and then we
can do a maintenance checkup while they're home on break.
So there's a lot of really cool advantages to having
these certificates, and you can still pick those up at
Shrockcannovations dot com. Click on shop and specials while you
are there. If you have a Windows eleven computer, remember
Windows ten computers don't need jack. Don't put a nickel

(12:17):
in your Windows ten computer. Not a nickel. Don't even
put a maintenance check up into it. It's not worth
it because it's dead October. So if you have a
Windows eleven computer, however, which most of you should have
Windows eleven by now. But if you have a Windows
eleven computer, you're gonna get two five h two. It's
gonna be forced down on you. And of course Microsoft

(12:38):
always says, oh no, no, no, we're not doing that
article two weeks ago. I think we covered it on
the air. Microsoft now force installing two four h two
on computers because if you get too far behind, Microsoft
doesn't give you a choice. So this is like when
your dad said you should save money and you got
a big windfall. When you're a kid, you get like
one hundred bucks, that's a big windfall. You know, you're like,

(12:58):
I don't I could go buy a game, I could
do whatever. I could buy a I could buy some
V bucks, get some robox, you know, whatever.

Speaker 5 (13:05):
I need to do.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
Dad's like you should save your emoting so on, and
you know that you should save some money because Dad
told you to, but you don't really understand why, you know.
It's kind of like that. So while you're while you're
there getting your maintenance certificate, make sure you pick up
a copy of the UH Safe Upgrade. Safe Upgrade is
the program that we make at Shock Innovations that automatically

(13:31):
installs two five h two for you with a warranty
behind it so that if your computer doesn't reboot, if
it blue screens now black screens because blue screens are
too triggering, so they made them black because that's better
if your computer reboots and all your data is gone.
If your computer, you know, reboots but doesn't work properly,

(13:52):
you have a warranty through Shock because you used Safe Upgrade. Now,
the reason I'm bringing all this up today well before
October when Safe when the two to five h two
release is coming out. October is going to be a
big month for Microsoft between Windows ten dying and Windows
eleven getting a refresh. It's going to be a big month.
So the reason I'm talking about this now is we

(14:12):
really have to pay this construction bill in the Omaha service.

Speaker 4 (14:14):
No.

Speaker 2 (14:14):
No, wait, no, two things can be true at the
same time, right, No, now, the reason I'm bringing it
up now, guys, that's on the specials page. We only
make six hundred copies available. Why why are there only
six hundred copies of Safe Upgrade. Let's say something goes
terribly terribly wrong, like awfully wrong, and all six hundred

(14:37):
people call the service center for help at the same time. Obviously,
that would be a monumental support event for us. We
have calculated that given all the systems that we have
at our disposal, and all the automation that Alfonso has
built for us and everything, if we leverage everything, we
can help about six hundred people in a day. So

(14:58):
six hundred is the limit. If something goes terribly wrong.
We don't want to be in a position where you're
calling us for support and we just can't help you,
even though you bought this so you'd have a warranty.
You're a little bit of a bait and switch that
you see where I'm geting it. This is not good service,
So six hundred is the limit. It's available right now

(15:19):
Shrocannovations dot com. I can see a few copies have
already disappeared from the from the available number, probably overnight.
People stumbled upon it when they were looking for their
maintenance check up certificates. But do check that out shrocannovations
dot com click on shop and specials for zero two, five, five,
eight eleven ten is the number to join us on
the program eight eight eight two five zero two zero

(15:39):
nine to one. We are going to give away a
twenty five dollars Shrock Innovations gift certificate at the end
of the show today. Last week on the program if
you missed the show, it's also available on the website
at shrocannovations dot com, we covered stories about how an
update from Microsoft was making your hard drive disappear. Update
on that story coming up, by the way. Also how
you can buy used cars on Amazon in some say

(16:00):
because that would be a great idea. And we told
you about the guy that programmed his work network to
absolutely explode or implode if he ever got laid off,
and he did and it did and he went to jail.
So don't do that. That's bad. Little update for you
that the update from the story last week on the
solid state hard drives disappearing after a certain Microsoft update.

(16:21):
Microsoft has been unable to replicate what has been widely reported,
especially in Japan on X. They can't replicate it. They
are working in conjunction with Phison. Phison. You probably never
heard of Phison, but if you have a solid state
hard drive, your controller chip is made by Phison, and
so in the data recovery world, we're very familiar with
Fison controller chips and how they work and how they

(16:43):
allow you to access your data. They've been Microsoft and
Phison have been working together trying to replicate the issue.
In neither company has been able to replicate the issue
right now, Microsoft's official position is that update is not
causing a problem.

Speaker 6 (16:55):
So there you go.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
We brought you the story, why we brought you the update.
Now you're good to go. So coming up on the
program today, this is gonna sound really really boring, but
I promise you it's gonna be actually pretty interesting. Because
I thought it was boring too, I almost didn't cover
it for the show, but then I started reading the
article because I thought, from a technical perspective, I might
want to know what Wi Fi seven, how it's different.
Someone's gonna ask me what's the difference between Wi Fi

(17:20):
six Wi Fi seven and five g and I'll have
to tell people on the radio, so I should probably know.
So I'm reading the article and I'm seeing the improvements
that Wi Fi seven is bringing to the table and
how quick it's coming, and I'm like, oh my gosh,
this is like game changing for wireless networking. So yeah,
we're gonna we're gonna talk about that a little bit. Also,
if you have Gmail, important story for you about two
point five billion Gmail users that got hacked, Yeah, that

(17:43):
could be you two. So we're gonna tell you what
to do if you you know, if you if you
suspect your hacked, what you should expect to see. And also,
there are certain subsets of Gmail users that are more
exposed than others, and so we're gonna tell you about
that so you can kind of gauge your level of
exposure there. Also, we are going to tell you how
to crash the AI agent running the Taco Bell drive through.

(18:06):
That's right, I'm gonna tell you exactly how to do it.
I'm gonna tell you what to order, and he will
crash the system every time, every single time. See, we
teach really fun. Is it vandalism?

Speaker 3 (18:17):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (18:17):
That that's vandalism. That would be a stretch, but maybe
on a slow news down Monday, we're gonna We're gonna
hear the morning news mean like and Taco Bill is
reporting today that they are unable to take drive through
orders because some guy keeps crashing the drive through film
at eleven four zero two five five eight eleven ten.
We're gonna take a quick break, guys when we come back. Jim,
your call is coming up next on compute this.

Speaker 5 (18:40):
There are enough unused computers in storage to give every man,
woman and child in the US and old, outdated and
useless computer system obsolete.

Speaker 7 (18:48):
Tablets and smartphones are nearly as bad.

Speaker 5 (18:51):
Most people know not to throw them into the landfill
where they leak and contaminate, but it's hard to find
a place to safely recycle electronics. That's why Schrock and
Innovations offers free recycling for computers, laptops, phones, tablets, cords,
and accessories. In fact, only monitors and printers have a
small recycling fee. Everything else is free. More importantly, Shock

(19:12):
will securely delete any data from your devices and hard
drives before they are sent to a certified recycling partner,
who will then repeat the wiping process just to be saved.
When you recycle your old technology at Shrock, you know
your identity and privacy are protected and your equipment is
being actually recycled by a certified recycling partner. Shock is
proud to recycle more ewys than we produce annually, making

(19:36):
a positive difference to our economy and ecology. Do your
part by dropping your old gear at any Shrock service
center and be part of the area's largest and most
popular technology recycling program wi Shrock Innovations.

Speaker 4 (19:50):
Shock Innovations repair technicians also make house calls. Make an
appointment and let us bring our award winning computer support
right to your home or business.

Speaker 5 (20:00):
You would probably rather drink the water at Camp La
June than get another call about the desperate need to
renew your cars expiring warranty. Who actually responds to those calls.
Everyone wants to play the warranty game where you pay
money now just in case you need service later that
everyone hopes you won't need or use.

Speaker 7 (20:17):
It's such a waste. It's no different with computers.

Speaker 5 (20:21):
Major manufacturers warranties have more subscript crosses than a Sunday
morning church service. Batteries are exempt hard drives must be
completely dead and forget about anything that they can remotely
claim as physical damage. That's why Shock warranties are different.
When you purchase a modular PC or a solid state
laptop and extend your warranty, we offer a no risk

(20:41):
money back guarantee. If you need the warranty, you will
be thrilled to have it if you don't use it,
and we refund your money automatically every time.

Speaker 7 (20:50):
That's right.

Speaker 5 (20:50):
We are so confident in the quality of our products
that our extended warranties are refundable. Many Shock customers use
their refunds to purchase another warranty, or talk at the
savings and move on. We all know you'll need it
to cover that expiring car warranty anyway. Shock's refundable extended
warranties just another way the Shrock Innovations Computer Company makes

(21:11):
your computer work for you.

Speaker 2 (21:18):
Alrighty folks, thanks for joining us for compute this this morning.
My name's Thor Schack. I'm the owner of the Shack
Innovations Computer Company. I'm gonna see how many times today
I can say this morning when many of you hear
the show in the afternoon, for zero two five five
eight eleven ten. See, these are the small things, These
are the small things. I had a great interview with
a candidate for a front desk position who also had
video editing experience, And I'm just sitting here thinking, how

(21:41):
do you feel about Sunday mornings at seven am? Remoting
into a computer and clicking scene change buttons and doing
things with obs studio to you know, so I don't
have to like be the one man band with all
the instruments strapped to me and doing everything at the
entire show. And you know, she seemed to be pretty
interested in it. We'll see, we'll see what happens. Sometimes
you get goosted on day one, so it'll be interesting
to see how many people. Actually we're supposed to be

(22:03):
busy in Omahon Tuesday, lots of people, like ten people
in there, but we'll see how many show up. We
might get ghosted by at least one of them. For
zero two five, five, eight eleven tens number to join
us on the program, Jim, Welcome to the program. How
can I help you on compute this today?

Speaker 3 (22:17):
Thanks for taking my call to her last week. I
have questions on two things from last week. You said
Yahoo email is garbage, and I like to know why.
And then secondly you said, Google reads all the emails,
so you could go with the private service like Proton
or Reagan. Why what's what's bad about you know, having Google?

(22:42):
He read your emails?

Speaker 2 (22:45):
Gotcha?

Speaker 3 (22:45):
And why would private be better?

Speaker 2 (22:47):
Well, inherently, you know, there isn't anything evil about Google
reading your emails. In fact, it's a transaction Google is
providing you with Gmail, which is I think we would
all agree that Gmail is by far as superior email
service over Yaho Mail, like thousand percent, right, So it
Yahoo male is garbage. It is literally ad click driven garbage.

(23:09):
How many screens can we make you look at? To
look at one email so you can see as many
ads as possible, that's Yahoo Gmail. There's very few ads. Few,
there's a few ads, you know, but not not much.
The thing that Gmail is is taking his payment is
knowledge of what you're doing. For example, a story that

(23:30):
we shared years ago on the radio program was a
woman called in and she said, through her Gmail, you know,
her dog died, and so she sent an email to
everybody telling her that her you know, the dog is
battle with cancer. The dog, you know, the dog is dead.
I'm so sad, you know whatever.

Speaker 6 (23:44):
Else.

Speaker 2 (23:44):
Within twenty four hours, Google was showing her ads for
puppy adoption. So that's the trade off. Google is reading
everything you're typing and everything you're saying, not only to
model you for AI. If you notice in Gmail now
it's predicted texting, trying to predict what you're going to
say next, and after you use Gmail long enough, it
can literally write your emails for you because it knows

(24:07):
what you're going to say, and it knows you that well.
That level of knowledge from an advertising perspective is hugely valuable.
If you're walking into the High V or the Target
or Walmart and I know what you're coming to buy
before you even walk in the door. I know what
section of the store you're going to I know how
long you're going to spend in the aisle. I know

(24:27):
what our current checkout volume is. I know how long
you're gonna wait in the line for checkout. I can
and I could probably put some screens up in your
path that would have special offers that you would also
be interested in, and maybe I can get you to
increase your purchase from ten dollars for whatever you're going
to buy to fifteen dollars, and if I can do
that across every visitor in my grocery store, I'm making

(24:48):
a lot of money. It's no different from Google. They're
learning everything about you so that when you are doing
anything on any website, not just a Google site, but
any website on the internet, advertise sense can be targeted
to you that you are likely to respond to and
buy things. So it's not evil, it's a transaction. You
are selling your the privacy of your mind for free email.

(25:13):
There's nothing evil or bad about that. It's just I'd
prefer not to do that. I prefer to keep my
email private.

Speaker 3 (25:21):
Now.

Speaker 2 (25:21):
Part of that is because I'm running a business too,
so obviously you know, there's there's a lot of things
that I really need to have running through encrypted email
that I'm not allowing that I'm not granting permission, which
is what you're doing for Google to read your email.
So I need private email, but maybe not everybody does.
And so it's a decision everybody can make. If you're
not willing to spend you know, twenty or thirty bucks

(25:42):
a month for private email, you probably don't need it,
and Google would be fine, but please don't use Yahoo.
Yahoo is just.

Speaker 3 (25:50):
Because of the ads for Yahoo, because of the.

Speaker 2 (25:53):
Ads, because there's no support. If you're a Cox customer
and you got transitioned to Yahoo, you know what I'm
talking about. One day, your email just stopped working and
you're like, there's a help article here and it says
if it doesn't work, try again later. That was the support,
try again later. I can't tell you how many customers
we transitioned from Coxmail to Yahoo mail over the shock

(26:14):
desk because there was just no help available. So you know,
Cox wasn't going to help you anymore. Yahoo has no support,
and basically Cox is giddy is offloading the cost of
managing email to Yahoo, which Yahoo is willing to take
because they're selling advertisements that are covering the cost of
them providing the email. Essentially, they're trend They're making money
showing you ads when you check your email. So nothing evil,

(26:37):
it's just you.

Speaker 3 (26:39):
Yeah. If people change service providers, they have changed their
email YEP address, you do.

Speaker 2 (26:48):
Yes, So if you have a Cox email address and
you switch to a different email, you switch to Alo
for example, you have to get a new email address,
which is again, if you have private email. You own
the email address, so your email address never changes, and
so it doesn't matter how you're connected to the internet,
if you're in Europe, if you're in America. You know,
if you have an AOL connection, it doesn't matter. If
you're on dial up, it doesn't. AOL just shut down

(27:09):
their dial up by the way, So if you're on
AOL dial up and it's not working, that's why they
did this month. They can't. They shut down the last
dial up lines. So hopefully, hopefully you're not using dial up.
Jim no access your yachting emails. Yeah, so that's that's

(27:30):
my position on it. You know, there's nothing evil about it.
It's just a business transaction. You're just you're trading your
privacy for a free service. There's no free lunch. But
you know, if you're not willing to do that, there
are private alternatives that are pretty affordable. You know, twenty
or thirty bucks is the bougie models. There are some
cheaper ones out there, and of course if you want
to run your own email server, it only costs you

(27:50):
about thirty bucks a year to go go to go
Daddy and get a domain and set up email on it.
So it's it's not bad at all, then you But
then again, you're you are the support, so I can't
fault Yahoo for not providing you support. Then tell you
to go do it yourself and then not have support.
But yeah, if you want to use Gmail, more power
to you. But I just I have a Gmail account.

(28:13):
I just prefer not to use it as my primary email.

Speaker 3 (28:16):
Okay, well, thank you.

Speaker 2 (28:19):
Hey, no worries, Jim. That's a great question. Thanks for
the call today. I appreciate you joining us on the
program for zero two, five, five, eight, eleven ten. Real quick,
before we hit the brake here. Wi Fi seven is coming.
And I'm not going to spend a ton of time
on this because it can get kind of boring, but
there is some really exciting components to this story that
kind of got me like, ooh, I wish I had
WiFi seven.

Speaker 7 (28:37):
Now.

Speaker 2 (28:37):
So here's the thing. When a new version of Wi
Fi comes out, you can't take advantage of it until
you update your router. Right So right now, all the
routers that Shock sells, all the routers that everybody sells,
our WiFi six. So a lot of the devices, however,
can support Wi Fi seven already. So a lot of
your iPhone sixteen's your you know, Samsung top of the

(28:58):
line flagship phones, A lot of those are going to
be able to support the Wi Fi seven standard, and
so the devices start to come out first, and then
when enough devices permeate the market. I mean, we're talking
your ultra ultra high end laptops can do Wi Fi seven.
Not just we tried to include it in the holiday special,
but the tech just isn't there yet. To tell you
how how new the technology is that's coming within six

(29:22):
months though, you're gonna have Wi Fi seven routers available,
why would you want to replace your existing router with
a Wi Fi seven router? Well, first of all, the
internet connection speed is three times faster than what you
get on Wi Fi six. Wi Fi six was just
an incremental up upgrade over Wi Fi five. When you
went to Wi Fi five Wi Fi six, you didn't

(29:43):
really notice. You're gonna notice when you go to Wi
Fi seven. It's huge. One of the biggest benefits is
that if you have a lot of devices connecting to
the same router, the total through put for the router
is much larger than the total through put was before.
So you know, you probably experienced this where so it's
kind of like water pressure in the house when somebody's

(30:04):
got the washing machine going, someone's got the dishwasher going,
somebody's flushing the toilet, and you're trying to take a
shower and you're like, please, where's the water just dribbling
out of the shower head. It's kind of like that
with Wi Fi routers. You've got one person streaming over here,
one person gaming over there, and all of a sudden,
you're trying to work from home and your connection is
stuttering and you can't have a zoom call and you're
wondering why. It's not because your internet. A lot of

(30:25):
people call the internet company and say, I need to
upgrade my speed. It's not that the speed is slow,
it's that your router doesn't have enough through put to
support all those different high bandwidth activities at the same time.
For example, a Wi Fi six router is limited to
nine point six gigabits a second of throughput, which basically
means nine high end devices at the same time will

(30:46):
max out a high end like what we sell at
Shock Wi Fi six router. If you have a basic,
cheap one, it'll be less than nine point six, but
nine point six is like the limit. That's as good
as life gets. Under Wi Fi seven, the limit is
thirty three thirty three gigabits per second versus nine. That

(31:06):
is not an incremental improved, but that is an epic,
mind numbingly huge improvement. Not only that, but it reduces
the latency. Latency is the amount of time it takes
your computer to communicate with the router and back again.
That's why most people who game don't like to game
on wireless networks, because it slows down your reaction times
by a fraction of a second. Not on Wi Fi seven,
it doesn't. Wi Fi seven is literally the same speed

(31:30):
from a latency perspective as a wired connection. It's unreal.
Also boosts and reliability, not as many drops, a little
bit better range, like just all around. Wi Fi seven
is gonna be the real deal. So it's not available yet.
It's not like you can go pick up a WiFi.
You can get it in some devices, like the receivers,
but the transmitters aren't available yet, and the ones that
are available are ridiculously expensive. You're gonna drop like seven

(31:53):
hundred dollars on a router. It's not worth it. But
as this technology permeates the market, say by mid next year,
if you're thinking about replacing a router, you might want
to hold off until mid next year and get yourself
a WiFi seven router because the benefits going down the
road long term are absolutely epic. Four zero, two, five, five, eight, eleven,
tens and number to join us on the program. We're

(32:13):
gonna take our break here. When we come back Google
Warren's two point five billion Gmail users. Thatch you got hacked.

Speaker 7 (32:22):
I'm sure it's fine.

Speaker 2 (32:23):
We're gonna tell you what to do about it. Also,
al we're gonna answer your maintenance checkup question coming up
next on compute.

Speaker 5 (32:29):
This computer problems usually don't just suddenly happen. Most failures
usually start out as small issues with few or no symptoms.

Speaker 7 (32:36):
Over time, they grow.

Speaker 5 (32:37):
Into error messages, blue screens, and other problems that can
be costly to fix. Shrock innovations by annual preventative maintenance
checkup catches those small problems now before they can the
tastasize and become tomorrow's costly repairs. During the maintenance check up,
our experienced technicians perform up to eight hours of tests, checks,
automated repairs and optimizations that keep your computer at peak

(33:01):
efficiency while identifying potential issues while you still have options
about how to handle them. When your computer gets its
first check up, it can see it to as twenty
five percent performance improvement and leaves our service center cleaned, sanitized,
and running better than the day you bought it. Just
About every complex device requires maintenance. Your computer is no different,
especially considering the valuable information that passes through it every day.

(33:25):
If you have not had your computer maintenance in the
past six months, you are overdue. Stop in or call
any of our service centers to arrange a free pickup
to ensure your computer continues to work for you.

Speaker 4 (33:36):
Update all of your third party apps on your computer
with secure updator. It keeps all your apps running smoothly
and helps block viruses. Download it for free today at
secure updater dot com.

Speaker 5 (33:48):
Have you noticed that almost every piece of technology seems
to do its best to be disposable? Every day people
talk their phones, tablets, and other electronic devices because they
can't be repaired. Manufacturers have engineered their products to fail
on a schedule so they can extract more money out
of your family budget.

Speaker 7 (34:06):
Automatically every year or so. But what if it didn't
have to be that way. What if you could get the.

Speaker 5 (34:11):
Performance of today's fastest computers with the expansion and upgrade
options you used to enjoy You just described Shrck's modular
desktop computers. Having the right tool for the job is important,
and Shock's modular desktop pieces packed the performance and flexibility
to handle your computing needs from just checking the email
to running a complex business. Modular desktops are engineered to

(34:34):
be easily repaired with widely available industry standard parts. Every
component is selected intentionally to give you years of upgrade
and repair options. It is not uncommon for a short
customer to be using the same computer for a decade
after they bought it. Modular PCs are the most popular
custom computers in the Midwest for a reason. When you
are ready for your next computer, stop in to check

(34:57):
out the modular lifestyle or shop online at truck Innovations
dot com.

Speaker 2 (35:07):
Alrighty folks, welcome back in to compute this. My name's
Thor schrockam the owner of the Shrock Innovations computer company.
Shrock Innovations will be closed on Labor Day, will reopen
the next day. For you at ten am on schedule,
just like always. All the newbies show up around eleven though,
so if you want to come say hi to the
new faces at shockup. I mentioned we were onboarding a
lot of people. We're talking like, we have three new

(35:28):
employees in the service center, three newbies, and then uh one,
Ellianna is down and from Lincoln to train on the
front desk, so there's another person who's not normally in
the service center. And then Burrow is transferring from Lincoln
to Omaha because he's starting his college career at UNO
and so he's going to stay at Shock through his
career there. So we have Burrow working in there as well.
Plus we have the normal complement of technicians in there.

(35:50):
Plus I'll probably show my face in there since I
hired these two people. And you know, the lovely Kimberly
is doing all the get bringing the contractors through. I mean,
it's just busy. It is busy in there. Where it
is not busy right now is the website Shocannovations dot com.
Everybody can go there. You can pick up your maintenance
checkup certificate. Today is the last day to pick that
up on the sale, so make sure if you're hearing

(36:10):
my voice. Today is the last day. Pick it up
Shrocannovations dot com go to shop and specials. Make sure
you get any as many certificates as you need to
cover any additional computers that you might want to have maintenance.
Like a daughter, a son, a granddaughter, grandson coming back
for holiday or around Christmas time. You want to make
sure that they get maintenanced as well while they're available,

(36:31):
while their computers are here. And you know, if you
take their devices away, then you get more attention. I'm
just saying it works. So so yeah, break that. We
got to take that device into Shrock. And I think
they maintenance cell phones too, right Shrock wink wink, Like, uh, sure,
do you have a certificate?

Speaker 8 (36:49):
Why?

Speaker 2 (36:49):
Yes, so I do. Here you go so you can
just drop those off anytime in the next six months
if you have one of those certificates. And while you
are there, do take a look at the two five
h two save upgrade. Apparently, uh the product name still
says two four h two somewhere on that page. I
had to post that yesterday. Normally, Alfonso handles all this stuff,
all the posting of products and things like that. Alfonso's

(37:12):
out for the holiday. Okay, So old man Shrock got
in there. I was like, let me figure out how
to do dish back in my day, and then, uh,
you know, I posted it.

Speaker 3 (37:21):
So there you go.

Speaker 2 (37:22):
Now it's up and it's available and it's good to go.
So it's two five h two. Trust me, that's the
only one available. In fact, I took the two four
h two off the website so there would be no confusion.
There is no two four h two available right now
to purchase on the website anywhere. There's no confusion. So
it's Shockinnovations dot com shop and specials. Pick up a
maintenance certificate, get a copy of Safe Upgrade once again.

(37:43):
Safe Upgrade is only required for computers running Windows eleven.
If you're running Windows ten, do not put a nickel
into your computer. Do not do a maintenance check upon it.
Don't do jack because you're gonna throw that computer away
in a month. Yeah, so don't spend money on it

(38:04):
for zero two five five eight eleven ten. Al, Welcome
to the program. How can I help you on compute
this today?

Speaker 6 (38:10):
Good morning, Good morning. Last week or a week before,
maybe you talked about your maintenance checkup, and you check
the voltage coming out of say a power supply for
a laptop. Yeah, what do you use for tolerance is
on that voltage? And what is the allowable ripple that

(38:31):
you would look for?

Speaker 2 (38:33):
Gotcha? So the tolerance is easy because right printed on
the side of the brick, the side of the laptop
power adapter, it will tell you what the voltage output
is supposed to be. Usually it's you know, like nineteen
point one or something like that, sixteen point nine. And
so we use a multimeter and we just we test
that and we see is it cranking out sixteen point

(38:54):
nine or whatever the side of the device is supposed
to be. Now, a little bit of tolerance is okay here.
If it's supposed to put out sixteen point nine and
you're at seventeen point one, not a big deal. If
it's supposed to put out sixteen point nine and you're
at sixteen point seven, not a big deal. If it's
supposed to be putting out it is almost like it's bad,
you know it when you see it kind of thing.
Because if it's supposed to put out sixteen point nine

(39:15):
volts and you hit it with a tester and it's
at six. Well that's bad. Yeah, that's that you're undervolting
the unit. In other words, at that point. For example,
I've noticed my studio computer. Every time I open it,
the battery is not fully charged. And all it does
the only thing I use the studio computer for. It's
a laptop. I bring it in, I plug it into AC,

(39:36):
and I run the radio show on it. So why
would the battery be depleted. It's powered off in the
backpack all week, and well, it's because my battery is failing.
It's not charging like it's supposed to, or my AC
adapter is not putting out the right voltage to charge
the battery while also running the computer. Either one of
those things could be true. I haven't done maintenance on it.

(39:58):
So again, you know, when things down the service center,
I'll take this in and be like, hey, guys, I
need you to maintenance my unit. Figure out why the
battery is not charging. You know it is, you know,
a five year old laptop. Maybe it's getting to be
that time for something that we use for, you know,
radio production.

Speaker 4 (40:11):
You know.

Speaker 2 (40:12):
It's got another five years. It's a holiday special from
five years ago. I mean, it's a good little computer.
So but yeah, so I'll probably put a battery in
it and call it good, or an AC adapter and
call it good. But that's why we test those things
during the maintenance checkup because that that stuff happens to
everybody eventually.

Speaker 6 (40:26):
All right, how about the ripple.

Speaker 2 (40:28):
I have no idea what that means.

Speaker 6 (40:32):
Well, the power suplus not putting out straight DC, it's
got some ripple. It is basically a sixty cycle or
harmonic of sixty cycles. Gotcha, it's riding on that DC.

Speaker 3 (40:46):
Yep.

Speaker 2 (40:46):
Okay. So the frequency of the power that's not tested
on the multimeter, we don't. We don't mess with the
frequency on the power on the uh on the the
desktop power supplies, however, we do uh so though it's
not like in asilloscope with like the the wave and
everything like that. But we have a it's a unit
we plug the power supply for the desktop into and

(41:08):
you know, basically, if there's a rail that is not
putting out inconsistent voltage, it will chirp and beep at
us and show us a blinking number on the on
the the adapter. So we on the multimeter. It's a
it's a it's a basic multimeter, you touch it, it
tells you here's the here's the voltage.

Speaker 8 (41:24):
You know, we don't.

Speaker 2 (41:25):
We're not buying the super duper one hundred and fifty
dollars multimeters because you don't need it. That's the thing.
You just don't need to know, because if it's bad,
it's gonna gonna be putting out the right voltage. Thanks
for the call, all. I appreciate you joining us on
the program. See, guys, I will admit when I don't
know something. Yeah, like I don't know what the ripple is.
I mean, it's the it's the cycle the hurts the
frequency of the power. Okay, I mean, but yeah, we

(41:47):
don't check that the wave form of the power, how
clean the power is, or how dirty it is, or
anything like that. That's all in our service center. Anyway,
it would be different in your home. Four zero, two, five, five,
eight eleven ten. Google is warning two point five billion
Gmail users that they got hacked, So the hack is
not life ending here. The hack was basically primarily Google's

(42:09):
small business systems, So the small business, small and medium
sized business users of Google products had all their email
addresses stolen. So why is this important? Just the addresses,
not the passwords. So now if I'm a hacker, I
can map your entire organization. I know everybody in your organization,
who emails who, essentially who could email who within the organization.

(42:32):
So if I want to say I get this all
the time, thor please change my direct deposit information from
my account to the information below. And obviously the employee
didn't send me this to have them change their direct
deposit information. It's a scam. Somebody's trying to get me.
They know that this person is an employee, that they're
active with the company, probably from farming not LinkedIn or something,

(42:54):
and so they want me to change the direct deposit
information so they can steal my employee's paycheck. Well, now
scams like that are going to be way easier because
the bad guys have a large list of the number
of emails. On top of that, when you have a
large list of emails like that, you can also go password, password,
you know, stuffing essentially, So you go out and you say,

(43:17):
does this person use the same password for multiple services,
the same password for the email as they used to
log into Netflix. And we had a breach over here
at Netflix. Not that there was a breach at Netflix.
I'm just using that as an example. And we know
we have a bunch of passwords from Netflix, and we
have a bunch of email addresses from Netflix. Let's see
if these passwords also work for these other emails over here.
And so as a result, you're going to start to

(43:38):
see a lot of phishing attacks where people are sending
you password resets that are illegitimate fake websites. Like you'll
go to dogmall dot com because you you fat finger
it or something. It's not Gmail. It's like gmaul or something,
and it looks like Gmail. So you type my passwords
not saved. I guess I got to log in again.
They heard they got ACKed. And you type in your

(43:59):
use the name email, and you type in your password
and you hit sign in, and then it just takes
you to Gmail dot com. And you're like, well the
signing didn't work. Maybe I'd type my password wrong, So
you type it a second time. You just gave your
password to the fake website, and then they just passed
you back through to Gmail to make it look like
nothing was wrong. So you're going to see an increase
in those type of social engineering attacks. You're not going

(44:20):
to see somebody automatically, you know, bopping into your Gmail
and stealing all your information. With that set, Gmail does
offer you the opportunity to enable two factor authentication to
log in. I have it enabled on my Gmail account.
It's very important that you do the same. It prevents anybody,
even if they have your password, from logging into your
Gmail account because you've got to have your phone to

(44:42):
get into that Gmail account. You got to be able
to hit I allow, you have to put in a code.
There's lots of different ways you have to get a
text message. There's lots of different ways to handle it.
But two factor authentication is very important. Also, if you
do happen to use the same password across multiple websites,
take a moment to change your Gmail password. Just change
into something unique that's just for Gmail. You don't even

(45:03):
have to be able to remember it. Just have it
saved in the browser somewhere. You can always reset it
if you forget. Make sure you set up your reset
options before you change your password. By the way, four
zero two, five, five, eight eleven ten number to join
us on the program, I'm going to take our final
break of the show. When we come back, we're gonna
really quickly get to Patty and David's calls here, figure
out what they've got going on, and then we're going
to tell you how to break the Taco Bell drive through.

(45:25):
That's right, you too can crash the Taco Bell drive
through by ordering eighteen thousand of this. We're going to
tell you what it is coming up next on compute this.

Speaker 5 (45:33):

Oh boy, the hour just flies by, guys. Final segment
of the show. Today, we don't have a ton of time,
So we're gonna jump right into those phones here for zero, two, five, five, eight,
eleven ten. Patty, Welcome to the program. How can I
help you on compute this today? Thank you, sir.

Speaker 6 (47:34):
I get a message on my new new computer. Put
in the password for the IMAP for the app. Aol. Okay,
this is an IMAP, so.

Speaker 2 (47:45):
I'm it's an email setting. What IMAP allows you to
do is it allows all of your devices to synchronize
the email. So the example that I use that I've
used in the past is if you if you remember,
like if you had an old farmhouse, you go down
the lane to get to the mailbox, and maybe you
get up at seven am every morning and you're thinking,
I'm gonna go check the mail, and you go down

(48:07):
there and you look in the mailbox and there's no mail,
and you think, well, shoot, I guess we haven't got
the mail yet, not knowing that your husband already went
down there an hour before you to check the mail
and took the mail out.

Speaker 6 (48:15):
Of the mailbox.

Speaker 2 (48:16):
So that's pop mail. That's the old way to do email. IMAP.
All the mail is synchronized, so no matter who gets
the mail first, everybody gets a copy of the mail.
So this would be like everybody who walks up to
the mailbox can still open the door and magically the
mail is still there and you pull it out. But
if you come back, the mail is not there for you.
But if your husband comes out, the mail is there

(48:36):
for him, and then if your grandkids come out, the
mail is there for them. It's crazy. It's like the
magic mailbox. So yeah, IMAP is a setting. So it's
saying that you have the wrong password, is what it's saying.
So your AOL password for IMAP is incorrect. That's something
we can definitely help you with over the shock desk.
You don't have to come into the service center for that.
So if you do need some help getting that situated,

(48:58):
give us a call in one of the service centers
and we're happy to help you out over the shock
desk on that. Okay, thank you very all right, thank
you for the call, Patty, I appreciate it. And final
calling of the show today, David. David, welcome to the program.
How can I help you on compute this?

Speaker 8 (49:11):
Oh? I made it by the skin of my see. Hey,
so have you ever had a problem with like you
you hook up your laptop and you're at home, and uh,
your mouth settings are all whacked out. And then you
go to like work, and you plug in, and the
same mouse you use at work you use at home
and the mouth settings are all whacked out. It's like,

(49:33):
is there something wacky going on with my system that
it's forcing me to change? Like it's super it's super slow,
and then I have to reset it and I don't know.

Speaker 2 (49:44):
It's just something that sounds like an awesome prank, honestly,
I mean, yeah, yeah, so you know when you're so
when you're at home, are you logging into it to
work remotely?

Speaker 3 (49:58):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (49:58):
Okay, So the set for your mouse, all the settings
for your entire user account are controlled by your by
your office, your virtualized log in essentially, so when you
log into your to your work account, all the settings
take over. So whatever the setting is at work will
be the setting at home when you're remoted in, which
will be different than when you're not remoted in. When

(50:19):
you're not remoted in at home, then the default setting
for the local computer would take over, which is why
your your mouse might behave normally for a while until
you try to work, and then all of a sudden,
it's weird. So if you got yeah, if you go
into your yeah, go to your work when you're logged
in at your work computer, take a look at your
mouse settings. And to do this, I'm assuming Windows eleven, right, okay,

(50:44):
So go into settings and up in the top there's
a cool little search box that makes life so easy.
Just type mouse and the first thing that pop up
mouse settings, And in here you can change the pointer speed.
That's what you're talking about, how it's moving really slow.
You can do that. You can change your left hand
right handed. You can see what happens when I scroll
the wheel? Does it jump one line? Multiple lines?

Speaker 6 (51:05):
You know?

Speaker 2 (51:06):
How fast does that work? You can change all those
settings there, and when you change them here, it'll save
them when you come back to work, whether you're working
from the office or at home.

Speaker 8 (51:15):
I what if I could have to go to my
mouse settings regularly and I just it's like I have
to do a setting adjust from work to.

Speaker 2 (51:25):
Home every day. Yeah, okay, then then there's something weird
going on. Then you know, it could be that the
setting that you're changing when you log in is not
being saved. That's possible, So maybe there's a network policy
that doesn't allow you to change mouse speed settings. That
could be it as well, But if you have to,
you shouldn't have to do it every time. So if
you do have to do it every time, check with

(51:47):
your network administrator at work and find out if there's
a restriction on the mouse settings there. Thanks for the call, David.
We appreciate you joining us on the program today. Now,
what you've all been waiting for for the entire program?
How do you crash an AI order taker at Taco
bell Answer? You order eighteen thousand waters? You order eighteen
thousand waters cups of water, and Taco Bells has literally

(52:09):
taken their AI offline now because people figured out that
you could crash it by ordering eighteen thousand cups of water.

Speaker 3 (52:15):
Now.

Speaker 2 (52:15):
McDonald's also has taken their AI order taker offline as well, apparently.
You know how sometimes AI can hallucinate, It just makes
stuff up that's just not true. Well, once in a while,
you know, you'd come to McDonald's and you'd say I
want to mcflury, and the AI guy would take your
order and say, okay, thank you for the mcflury, And
then you get to the window and there's like a

(52:35):
strip of bacon stuck in your mcflury and you're like,
what is this? And you ordered it with bacon and
you're like, no, I didn't. I didn't order my ice
cream with bacon like that. I don't know my soy
based ice cream was on bacon in it. That's kind
of weird. Well, yeah, so they took it offline. It
also ordered several hundred dollars of chicken nuggets for one customer.
Could you imagine that you get up to the window

(52:57):
like today, your total is gonna be three hundred nine
twenty seven dollars, sir, and we're gonna need you to
pull up to a window one and stopping the number
the spot number one there because we're gonna have to
cook eight hundred chicken nuggets for you. Oh my gosh,
don't let that happen, all right, Today's winner twenty five

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
