Speaker 1 (00:01):
Shrock Innovations presents the midwest number one independent computer repair
company with service centers and Lincoln pall Maha a billion
des moines and across the country via the Shrock Desk.
This is compute this.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Good morning, folks, welcome in to compute this. My name
is Thor Schrock. I'm the owner of the Shrock Innovations
computer company for locations like the big voice man told
you about there that can help you out when your
computer is, you know, having some difficulty not doing what
you wanted to do, or you know, maybe even getting
to that point where it might be time to look
at replacing it with Windows ten coming up for its
(00:38):
death date essentially within the next month here and yes,
there are a couple things that you can do to
extend that death date by a year if you wanted to.
Those things are not a great idea to do from
a general if you're not a technical person. This is
like saying, you know, if you really wanted to, you
(00:59):
could swap the engine in your car for a more
powerful engine. A person could should a person that doesn't
know how to fix it when something about that new
engine doesn't work the way that the old engine did,
or there's a sensor that's messed up, or the programming
doesn't work, or your printer can't get a printer. Your
email service provider doesn't support Windows ten anymore, so they
(01:20):
won't help you. You can't get software for it anymore
because Windows ten isn't supported by your software company. There's
a lot of different reasons that you should really not
stay on Windows ten, even though technically there are a
couple things you can do. If you create a Microsoft
account and then you go in and you download the
Extended Support app from Microsoft and you pay for it,
(01:42):
which it's free, it's zero dollars, but you have to
go put it in the cart. You have to check out,
which means you have to add a credit card, even
though you're not charging the card, because Microsoft wants to
set you up to buy other things from the Microsoft
Store that you probably didn't even know existed. It's like
an app store, like your phone has an app store.
It's the same thing, but it's on your computer, but
you didn't even know that. Nobody knows that because nobody
uses it. Well, that's what Microsoft's trying to fix. So
(02:03):
the figure if we take these people and give them
away to stay with Windows ten for a year. Maybe
they'll do all these things and uh, and then they'll
stay with They'll get one more year of free updates
to Windows ten, not realizing that everybody else is gonna
move on, and you know you're gonna be the bitter clinger,
like hanging onto Windows ten for another year when with
nothing that works. It's not a great not a great plan.
(02:26):
Imagine bringing your Windows ten computer in for a maintenance
check up next year. We're just gonna look at you like, yo, wow, okay,
we'll do what you want us to do. Isn't prudent.
I wouldn't recommend it, but if you want us to
(02:48):
maintenance that we will. And of course there are always
exceptions to the rule. For example, you know companies that
have a you know, one time, I remember one of
the one of the early jobs I went on back
in the day, was a company that had a they
engraved tombstones, and it was really an amazing piece of equipment.
It was this giant room essentially that you took this
(03:08):
slab of granite into and you put it down on
a table, and then you left the room and you
shut the door and it was all secure and everything
and then it would literally cut the name into the
granite with water jets. So that's what the reason that
the room was so enclosed. I mean, it's literally shooting
a rock with enough water pressure to carve into the rock.
(03:31):
So you don't want to you don't want to get
your hand under that, you know, I wouldn't feel good.
But this machine required Windows ninety eight to run. So
as Windows ninety eight died, you know, the guy that
owned the engraving company was the pull of Enti Monument Company
in Omaha here, and he he would say, well, you know,
I could buy a new machine, but that's like, you know,
ten thousand dollars and this was like in early two
(03:52):
thousands money, so it was like today's equivalent, it's like
seventy seven thousand dollars after inflation, So it was an
expensive machine to buy. All he had to do was
keep Windows ninety eight and he didn't have to spend
the money. And so he had me fixing and maintaining
and keeping that computer running as long as we possibly could.
There's always exceptions to the rule, but if you use
their computer online for anything, you really don't want to
(04:14):
be on Windows ten. After the end of October essentially
for zero two, five, five, eight eleven ten is the
number to join us on the program. If you're outside
of the metro area, you can reach us eight eight
eight two five zero two zero nine to one. As
we do every week, we'll be giving away a twenty
five dollars Shrock Innovations gift certificate to one person at
the end of the program that calls in asks the question,
(04:35):
makes a comment, is you know just generally part of
the program. In some way you can get in that
drawing to get yourself twenty five dollars from Shrock Innovations
put right into your Shock account, which it works out
real nice. If you missed the show last week, you
can catch that on our website shrocinnovations dot com. You
can click on the specials. Sorry jumping ahead to my brain.
(04:58):
You can click on radio show and it'll show you
all the previous shows. You can watch the videos, you
can do all the things. There wasn't after Shock last week.
There will not be one today, so head's up there,
but you can check all those out at shrocinnovations dot com.
While you're there, you can click on shop and Specials
and that will take you to the specials page where
we have one of the kind computers that you can purchase.
(05:18):
You know, there were you know, floor models in some
case or you know open box items things like that
that we discount on the website there at Shocinnovations dot com.
Click on shop and specials, and that's also where you're
going to find the Windows eleven two five h two
October update. So October is gonna be a big month
for Microsoft, and we're going to talk about this for
you know, briefly on the program this morning. But there's
(05:40):
a big, big update coming for Windows eleven. It's gonna
change everything about how Windows eleven works. You're You're gonna
everything's gonna get infused with AI essentially. You know, it's
I know you don't want it. I know you don't
think you need it, and you're wondering, why do I
have to have it? Can I opt out of it?
The answer is no, you can't opt out of it.
You need it because this is the way the world
(06:01):
is going in the same reason why you needed a
computer when your typewriter worked just fine. You know you
need when when you're what was it? It wasn't a rolodex?
What was the name of the card file thing. It
wasn't a rolodex. We did this a few weeks ago
on the program. What was that a catalog? Well, that's
a card catalog for the library. Okay, that's a good
we'll use that. You know, this is like how you
(06:22):
didn't want to get rid of the card catalog and
the Dewey decimal system to go to the computerized system
into library. You know, It's like it's the same thing.
It's an evolution. Things change, guys. I'm getting to that
age now where I'm kind of resisting it too, and
I have to remind myself that things change. My customers
are going to change with it, and I need to
change and learn these things so that my customers can
(06:43):
count on me to support them and count on my
team to support them. And so I can't. I can't
have that mental resistance that some people have the luxury
of having. So it is happening. It's something you need
to be ready for. It's something that quite possibly and
in some cases quite probably, will severely screw up your computer.
And microf does this every year twenty percent of the time.
It has epically bad consequences, and this year they're gonna
(07:05):
launch it all different so they can snap their fingers
and turn everybody on at the same time, because I'm
sure it'll be fine. Yeah, we're not gonna try it
out on a few people first. Now we're just gonna,
like an I dream of Genie. They're gonna, you know,
do the arm thing and then the little wink and
then boom, all of a sudden, everybody's on two five
h two, And well, if you don't make it, you know,
(07:25):
it's like Danos and the snap. You don't know what
I dream a Genie is, do you No? I know
what it is?
Speaker 3 (07:29):
Oh okay, all right, I'm just looking at you. You're
looking confused, and like a lot of people out there
listening are like, oh yeah, I remember that little little
winky thing that she did. And there may be a
few people listening who were like, what is this old
man talking about?
Speaker 2 (07:44):
Four zero two five five eight eleven ten? When did
I become old man? Shruck? All right? Eight a'ight eight
two five zero two zero number murk and murder, Sonny.
We had to turn the radio on with the nub.
There were no frency buttons and clickings. Oh golly, all right,
So today on the program, Omaha Service Center construction is
well under way. We're going to tell you an update
(08:05):
on that. Also, I don't know if you've heard about this.
I was at FedEx, of all places, and the woman
in front of me at line. The line was taking forever,
as it often does at FedEx to ship a box,
and the woman in front of me at line, she
is a rep for Meta. She's actually somebody who's who
goes into companies to sell them large quantities of Meta's
(08:29):
AI glasses to use it work. And it's not every
day that you find a Meta AI rep in line
in front of you and you have time to chat.
But she's telling me all about the Meta AI glasses
and how they work and what they can do and
everything else. And you know, I'm not a I tried
the Google glass thing back in the day, and you know,
let everybody look at me funny as I walked around
with these things on for a few weeks, and you know,
(08:50):
they really didn't improve my life in any way. They
really didn't give me any anything that I couldn't get
from my phone or my watch. And ever since then,
I've been pretty cool on the idea of Mark glasses essentially,
And let's just be honest. I mean these metaglasses, they
make you look like an analyst on MSNBC. I mean
there are some pop bottle looking black rim liberal looking glasses.
(09:12):
I mean, it's it's bad. Right then I could really
be old man shruck and you know, maybe they fired me.
You know, Scott's coming thwart those glasses. You gotta go
go stand over there with Dowd. You gotta go. But anyway,
too soon you hear he's upset because you know people
aren't as mad about him getting fired as Jimmy Kimmel.
Oh really yeah. He thinks he should be right up
(09:34):
there with Jimmy Kimmel. He's like he's an analyst on MSNBC.
I mean that's like if I said I got fired,
if Scott came in and fired me, and then I'm like,
I should be right up there with with Jimmy Kimmel. Up,
there's relative, but you know what I'm getting at very relative.
So we're gonna talk about what is this, dude? What
are the new meta glasses? You're not gonna buy them, right,
(09:57):
but when you see somebody wearing them, you're gonna want
to be very very aware that that person is around.
Because of the new Meta Live AI, we're gonna tell
you what's going on behind the glasses in the eyeballs
of the people wearing them. Also, Elon his company Neurolink,
got FDA approval. That means that the federal government has
(10:18):
approved hooking up people's brains to grock. That's gonna happen, yep, yeah, really,
we're gonna tell you about that coming up on the program. Also,
and then oh, Samsung has a new update for the
refrigerators that you're gonna hate. And once again, the Lovely
Kimberly has proven right. So you know, big surprises on
(10:39):
the show this week. And my wife is right. Surprise. Yeah,
she's always right. Four zero two, five, five, eight eleven ten.
So construction in the Omaha Service Center. Speaking of my
lovely wife, she is acting as the general contractor for
the Omaha Service Center construction, saving US roughly fifty percent
of the construction budget by using her established pocket full
(10:59):
of home improvement vendors. Like literally, she's like, I got
a drywall guy, I got a painter. Her angels come
into paint. It's gonna be good. Miguel will be here
to do the drywall. You know, we got we we
didn't have an HVAC company, so we called like three
different ones, but Scransky got in there and got it
done in like a day, so that was great. And
so last Thursday we took a sledgehammer to the front
(11:19):
desk in Omaha and cleared out that front space. And
one week later Thursday of this week, we have framing, drywall,
HVAC done, so we're ready for paint essentially next week,
and then of course reconstruction putting everything back on the walls.
So it's just moving moving so fast because she's doing
a great job with that. So please excuse our construction
(11:40):
in the Omaha service Center. I really appreciate your patience
with us as you've been having to squeeze into the
tech side of things. Trust me, the texts aren't happy
that it's going to go another week either. There it's
really funny people who've never done construction work before. Like
the original quote was like thirty forty thousand dollars and
six to eight weeks and that was that was the
(12:01):
that was the quote, and I'm gonna save you some
money six to eight weeks thirty forty thousand dollars. We're
gonna save you some money. Like the whole buildout for
this shop was like forty thousand dollars back in the day,
but that was back in the day, so who knows,
old man Schrock. So anyway, the lovely Kimberly gets in
there and she's like, well, hmm, we're gonna save ourselves
(12:24):
some money, and so she puts us all together. She
gets it done for like fifteen grand. The whole job
said and done, and four to six weeks, which, of course,
in construction time, means eight to twelve weeks became two
to three weeks. And the guys in the back, they're like,
what do you mean we're gonna have to go another
week before we can get back into the front, And
(12:46):
she's like another week, and she just looks at it
like it could have been so much worse. You have
no idea how construction works, guys. So it be thankful
it's only two weeks. Be real thankful because it should
be a whole anyway. Trust me, anybody who's ever done
a a retail remodel in two weeks, this is like
TV quality speed. You could do if you could shoot
(13:06):
this for like you know, those those home improvement shows
and'd be like two weeks later there's a new bathroom
in a new kitchen, and a new front facade, and
a new roof and a new driveway, and hell a
new foundation too. Why not? All right? Also on the
program today, we've got I mentioned two five h two,
and I don't want to, you know, beat on this
for twenty minutes or anything, because we did that last week.
(13:26):
We told you all about what's gonna happen. But for
those of you who missed the show last week and
probably won't go to the website to to watch or
listen to it, let me give you a quick recap.
Every year, Microsoft puts out an update for their operating systems.
This is called a feature upgrade. This is different than
the regular monthly updates that you get on Patch Tuesday.
This is not a patch. This is an entirely new
(13:48):
version of Windows eleven. So, if it helps you to
think about it this way, you've got Windows eleven version one,
and now you're gonna get Windows eleven version two. Why
do we call it two five h two, Well, it's
a it's a nomenclature that Microsoft created two five stands
for the year it's released, so twenty twenty five and
(14:08):
H two stands for the fall. Half two used to
I don't know how they do it in the southern hemisphere.
Maybe out it's not the fall and it's half two
in the spring. I don't know. I don't know how
that works. But essentially Microsoft used to release two of
them a year. There was the Spring and then the Fall.
They got it down with Windows eleven to one per
year and this is and they do a lot more
in that update. As a result, they're compressing the two
(14:30):
updates together. That was the first big change. Then last
year they started pre downloading the components of the software
two your computer so that when the time came to
install it, when it was go time, essentially your computer
could just reboot already have the download which is what
takes all the time, and run the installation quickly. And
they could The idea was flip everybody into two five
(14:51):
h two very quickly, the new version or sorry, that
was two four h two two five h two. They're
doing something similar. They're downloading it to your computer right now.
Actually they're also installing it right now, but they've just
commented out all the lines of code that do different
things to your computer so you're not gonna notice it's installed.
But it's installed, it's just not running. And then when
(15:14):
the day comes to launch two five h two, they're
going to send one small update that basically flips a
switch in your computer and says, now you can run
two five h two, And then the idea is it
will just magically spring to life and everything will be
right with the world. Now. I understand why Microsoft is
doing it this way, and there are some reasons in
software development, you know, realms where this makes sense. Right,
(15:39):
if you're gonna do this and do it this way,
this kind of makes sense. However, in the reality realm
that we all live in, when you change everybody's everything
at the same time and don't give anyone anytime to test, check, update,
do things like that, you're gonna have problems. You're gonna
(15:59):
have older printers that just don't work anymore, older scanners
that just disappear. You're gonna have people's files that just
go away. Older applications that are used to Windows working
a certain way, and they were maybe coded poorly because
they were they were based on that assumption that Windows
would always work this way. Well, if they changed the
way Windows works. Well, then those programs don't work right anymore.
(16:20):
And some of these programs are so old they're not
supported anymore. So if this happens to you and you
get two five h two, the questions can I opt
out of it? The answer is no. Eventually, Microsoft's not
going to force you to get it. Not in the beginning.
They'll always say we don't force people to get it,
and everyone will get on the radio here and tell me, oh,
they're not going to force me. They said that, Well,
we covered it a few weeks ago where they said
(16:40):
if you don't have two four h two, now you're
getting forced times up, Grace gone, it is time to go.
So eventually you're going to be forced to install it
one way or the other. So rather than uninstalled, than
installing it in this uncontrolled way, this automated way where
eighty percent of the people are going to be just fine.
And that's good enough for Microsoft, because the twenty percent
(17:02):
of the people never go yell at Microsoft when it
blows up. They end up in my service centers and
they need to yell at somebody because it's really frustrating.
You have to spend three hundred dollars to fix your
computer because Microsoft screwed it up with a free update.
And who is the one person in the room that
you can yell at, well, me or my front desk
or you know. I'm not saying everybody does this, but
(17:22):
we get beat up pretty good from these updates, and
we got tired of it. So finally we said, you
know what, Let's make a piece of software called Safe Upgrade.
Safe Upgrade safely and automatically installs two five h two
on your computer for you. If something goes sideways, you
have a warranty with Shrock, so we fix it, and
(17:42):
we don't charge you three hundred dollars to fix it.
So of course Safe Upgrade must be like two hundred dollars, right, No,
it's sixty five bucks. And let's say you get Safe
Upgrade and then you go to install it, and because
maybe you're not the most technically inclined person on the planet,
you can't figure out how to get it to work.
You know, it's it's pretty simple, so use your name
in a password, the same one you used to buy
it when you log into Shock Innovations dot com to
(18:03):
make your purchase. But you know there's still a lot
of password resets that day. But you do in your
password reset, you get your using it in your password,
You run it and you're just not your down. You
download it and then you don't know that you need
to run it or we see it all. If you
need help, we will help you over the shock desk
to run the program. If for some reason, after all
that assistance, it's still not working on your computer, there's
(18:26):
a reason it's not working, you would have been one
of the twenty percent that had something go terribly, terribly wrong.
Because safe Upgrade doesn't just install it for you automatically.
It stops if there's a problem and doesn't install it
and tells you it can't go. So here's the deal.
If something like that happens to you, now you have
a warranty. You can bring it into the service center.
(18:46):
Now if we need to install it on the bench
for you, we charge you the bench rate rather than
the do it yourself at home rate. That's sixty five
bucks at home. If you come into the shop it's
ninety five dollars. It's thirty dollars more. Thirty five dollars more.
You pay the difference, but that's it. You pay the difference,
you still get the warranty. So there are only a
certain number of copies of Safe Upgrade available at Shrock
Innovations dot com. I apologize during the commercial break here,
(19:08):
I'll look and see how many are left so I
can tell you. But we sent the email. We sold
a lot last week. Once they're sold out, we stop
because if something goes really, really, really bad, there's a
limit to how many people we can support at the
same time, and so that's why we have to be
careful about that. So if this is something if you have,
you're going you're gonna have Windows eleven in October. Everybody
(19:29):
is gonna need this update in October because you should
not be running Windows ten in October anymore, do you
hear me? You should not need to You don't want
to be running Windows ten in October. So therefore, if
you're running Windows eleven, people ask do I need this
update for? Well, you're gonna get the two five h
two upgrade no matter what. If you want it in
(19:52):
a controlled way with a warranty, Yeah, you need Safe Upgrade.
If you're gonna stay with Windows ten for some reason,
then you don't need it because Windows ten isn't getting
anything new. In fact, they're cutting off everything old as well.
For zero two, five, five, eight, eleven ten, first break
of the program. When we come back the new metalive AI.
What's going on behind those glasses when they look at you?
(20:12):
We'll tell you coming up next on compute this.
Speaker 1 (20:14):
Remember the good old days when virus detection worked like
where's Waldo? Spot the virus in the striped shirt and
you win. Today's infections are changing hourly to avoid detection
and use social engineering to trick you into making mistakes.
Using yesterday's security to defend against today's threats is like
using leeches to stop an infection. It just doesn't work.
(20:36):
We recommend Sophos intercept X anti virus backed by Shrocks
Virus free guarantees. SOFOS uses the power of AI to
detect the patterns of a virus attack and responds with
Shrock's custom actions that stop it fast. With Sofos on
your PC, Mac, Android, or iOS device, you get the
state of the art protection you need to defend against
(20:58):
the most advanced ATIMEX out there. In fact, if your
device gets a virus while running sofos antivirus, shock will
remove it. For free guaranteed. It hasn't happened yet and
we intend to keep it that way. Ditch your dad's
antivirus and keep your device, data and identities safe with
sofos and Shock innovations.
Speaker 4 (21:18):
Update all of your third party apps on your computer
with Secure updator. It keeps all your apps running smoothly
and helps block viruses. Download it for free today at
secure update dot com.
Speaker 5 (21:29):
You know your computer needs modern antivirus, and you know
using a VPN helps protect your identity online, But did
you know that all of that protection could be useless
if you're running outdated programs. We all run common free
software like Adobe Reader, Dropbox, Firefox, and Chrome. Every day,
there are critical security updates for these common programs that
(21:49):
don't get automatically installed for up to two weeks. That's
an eternity in today's world. That's why Shrock created Secure Updata.
Secure updater checks for and installs these critical updates every
eight hours, boosting your antivirus by closing off attack vectors
before they can be used to penetrate your computer. Go
to secure updater dot com and try it for free.
(22:11):
We are so confident in our product we don't even
ask for a credit card to start the trial. Go
to secure updater dot com today and start your fourteen
day trial and enjoy having the peace of mind that
your software is being updated quickly and safely. You will
be shocked at the number of programs that are out
of date on your PC. Right now, get your fourteen
day free trial at secure updater dot com.
Speaker 2 (22:38):
All right, folks, welcome back in to compute this. My
name is Thor Schockam, the owner of the Shock Innovations
computer company. Last week we did fail to get to
a story that was of great interest to a lot
of people, and that was the is Facebook monitoring your
camera role essentially on your phone even though you're not
uploading pictures to Facebook. And here's the background on this, guys, Facebook.
(23:01):
Have you ever been on Facebook? And it says, here's
a suggested montage of photos, like a then and now
kind of thing, or like a video of like twenty
five years of friendship with whoever you know, and it
shows you all the pictures and stuff, those pictures that
not all of them were uploaded to Facebook to your profile.
Those pictures, some of them were just in your phone.
(23:21):
So Facebook is currently is uploading every picture and every
video from your phone to their servers, where they are
then processed by artificial intelligence to create these montages. The
original files are discarded after that because you did not
upload them to your profile, but then the montage is
saved to be suggested to you as a possible thing
(23:42):
that you might want to post. So essentially, Facebook is
trying to AI generate content for you to post and
share and get interactions and likes and everything else. Obviously,
this is a little concerning for people who may have
personal private images on their phones and they're getting all
could you imagine five years of marriage with your husband
and all of a sudden you're like, whoa, whoa, whoa,
(24:03):
what is that? Yeah, I didn't upload that. I mean
I don't. Maybe you don't, but I don't. But you know,
some people do. Trust me. I'm working the data recovery lab. Guys.
I've seen some grandma things that will shock you. Yeah,
don't look at me that way. You know exactly what
I'm saying, and it's true. So anyway, some things you
(24:24):
just can't unsee. You know. You got to make sure
that photos are working. You have to look at the
thumbnails at least you know to say, did I get
her data back? I did? Oh? Uh, okay, she's a
grown adult. She can do what she wants. Okay. Anyway, Well,
you don't want to lose important photos and things like that,
(24:45):
you personal family, baby pictures and such. You know, you
just you never want to have that happen. Okay, I
should quit? All right. We have a data recovery lab
in the Omaha Service Center, by the way, where we
can recover just about anything that you can lose, and
we do sometimes some things. You sometimes we have to
recover things that you meant to lose. We're like, sorry,
We're just that good. Uh four two eleven ten. H So, No,
(25:11):
the Facebook's uploading all these pictures to your to their service,
essentially intoleting. Now, you can turn this off in your settings.
The problem is nobody remembers turning it on because it
was one of those updates where it's like, do you
agree to a whole bunch of stuff and everyone's like scroll, scroll, scroll,
I agree, and I did it too. Mine was turned
on as well. So I'm not gonna it's in the settings.
(25:32):
I'm gonna post this on the Facebook page at Facebook
dot com. Slash Shock Innovations will put the story up
this week about exactly how to turn this off in
your device. But if you have an Android device, specifically,
this is turned on. I don't know if it's turned
on in every Apple device, but it's turned on in
every Android device. All right. So, speaking of Facebook Meta,
all that jazz, the new Meta AI glasses. I got
(25:52):
stuck behind the lady at FedEx and she's telling me
about all that. She's a rerap. She's trying to sell
me glasses, and you know, I'm like, okay, she doesn't
know she's talking to me who I am or what
I do. I'm just shipping a big box. And she's
telling me about how these glasses have live AI, so
you can essentially whatever you're looking at, you can then
(26:12):
you use hand gestures to interact with the glasses, so
you look like you're having like a conniption or like
a convulsions, and you're moving your fingers around and you're
pinching and you're swiping in the air, and everyone's like
what is that person doing Because the whole point of
these glasses is they're supposed to look more like normal glasses.
The new Oakley ones are supposed to look more like
normal glasses rather than big giant, you know, ray band
(26:34):
Meta AI glasses. So if the person with the normal
looking glasses is gesturing in front of them, they probably
have these Meta AI glasses and they're they're swiping and
typing and doing things like that on their their screen
and their eye well the screen, the cameras can look
at what's going on around you, and you can then
ask metas ai for assistance. So in the product demo
(26:55):
launch you might remember this happened to Bill Gates back
in the day. He was doing a product launch for
Windows ninety and Windows ninety eight Blue Screen live. During
the launch, it was like, oh, bomp bom bomb classic.
Mark Zuckerberg had a similar experience with Meta AI glasses
this week, so during the launch during the unveiling, the
(27:17):
demo failed because okay, just like right now, if I said, uh,
the a word for the Amazon device that you may
or may not all have, and she would wake up.
If I say her name, she'll wake up. For everybody
that can hear my voice. Right now, when you're at
Meta in a building full of people wearing the glasses
and on a building wide broadcast, you say, hey, Meta,
(27:41):
everybody's glass is activated at the same time. And because
it was a controlled demo, they had a small internal
in house server set up to handle the demo. In
other words, they were spiking the demo to make sure
it didn't blue screen. And when they activated everybody's glasses
at the same time, it overwent. They dedossed themselves. It
(28:02):
overwhelmed the capability of the server to respond, and so
when he said hey Meta, nothing happened. Wow, So the
technology failed. In a second demo as well, there was
a guy who was looking at a series of ingredients
on the table in front of him. He had bowls
ingredients and he wanted to make some kind of like,
(28:23):
you know, Asian steak sauce or something, and so he said, oh, hey, Meta,
you know, tell me how to make some steak sauce
with these ingredients that I have in front of me.
And then the meta AI responds, well, I see you've
already combined some of the ingredients, so well the next
step is zesting a lemon or something like that. And
he says, well, looking at the table, I haven't done anything.
(28:45):
There's nothing mixed. Well, Meta, what should I do first?
Let me help you out here? What should I do first?
Meta doesn't respond Meta, Hey, Meta, what should I do first?
To make the sauce for my Asian steak sauce? And
then it's like you've already mixed half the ingredients and
he's like, oh, Margaret. The first time he was pretty cool.
(29:07):
The second time he was getting visibly frustrated with it,
and it was like, okay, back to you, Zuck. So
then they go back to Mark Zuckerberg and he's like,
hold on, hold on. Someone from inside the building is
trying to call me right now. My glasses. I can
see the call coming in. Watch me answer with a
hand gesture. And he's like, or whatever the hand gesture
is on, I'm just making it up. Hey hello? Does it?
(29:30):
Two or three times? Phone just keeps ringing, phone goes
to voicemail. He's like, huh, well, maybe that guy could
like call me back. Maybe he'll call back, you never know,
And so someone's like, call him back right now, So
he calls him back. The second time, he's trying to
answer it again and it does, it won't work, So
finally he taps the glasses with his finger to answer
(29:50):
the phone and it answers the phone. So it was
a really rough, rough, rough demo launch. So the long
story short, if you see someone wearing Meta AI glasses,
don't freak out because they don't work. Number two, So
don't buy them because they don't work. Number two. The
thing is, this technology is still very young, and eventually
this stuff will work, and eventually it will get really good,
(30:11):
to the point where you'll be able to wear a
pair of glasses and look at something in a foreign
language and have it live translated on your in your lens,
or you'll be able to hear somebody talking in a
foreign language. And somebody was talking about that the new
Apple AirPods will do this now, they'll do live translation.
And somebody said like, oh, man, nail spas are never
going to be the same again. Are you talking in
(30:34):
a foreign language? It's like, oh, that woman, she's a
real meanie. You know what'd you say about me?
Speaker 6 (30:39):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (30:40):
I didn't not know you spoke antony? Oh no, yeah,
four zero two, five, five, eight eleven ten. I'm gonna
take our second break of the program here, guys, when
we come back. Neurallink has received FDA approval to hook
human brains up to GROCK. The large language Model, a
competitor for chat GPT. They're gonna hook your brain up
(31:02):
to a large language model. Quote, if you're imagining saying something,
we would like to pick that up holy or well, batman,
We're gonna tell you what's going on over at Elon's
near link coming up next on compute this.
Speaker 5 (31:17):
There are enough unused computers in storage to give every man, woman,
and child in the US an old, outdated, and useless
computer system. Obsolete tablets and smartphones are nearly as bad.
Most people know not to throw them into the landfill
where they leak and contaminate, but it's hard to find
a place to safely recycle electronics. That's why Shrock Innovations
(31:37):
offers free recycling for computers, laptops, phones, tablets, cords, and accessories.
In fact, only monitors and printers have a small recycling fee.
Everything else is free. More importantly, Schrock will securely delete
any data from your devices and hard drives before they
are sent to a certified recycling partner, who will then
repeat the wiping process just to be saved. Recycle your
(32:00):
old technology. At Shrock, you know your identity and privacy
are protected and your equipment is being actually recycled by
a certified recycling partner. Shock is proud to recycle more
e wasys than we produce annually, making a positive difference
to our economy and ecology. Do your part by dropping
your old gear at any Shock Service center and be
(32:21):
part of the area's largest and most popular technology recycling program.
With Shrock Innovations.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
Now, you can configure and purchase laptops, desktops, tablets, and
more all at the Newshrock innovations dot com. Check out
our specials for one of a kind discounts and deals.
Speaker 5 (32:38):
You would probably rather drink the water at Camp La
June than get another call about the desperate need to
renew your cars expiring warranty. Who actually responds to those calls.
Everyone wants to play the warranty game where you pay
money now just in case you need service later that
everyone hopes you won't meet or use. It's such a waste.
It's no different with computers us. Your manufacturer's warranties have
(33:01):
more subscript crosses than a Sunday morning church service. Batteries
are exempt, hard drives must be completely dead, and forget
about anything that they can remotely claim as physical damage.
That's why Shrock warranties are different. When you purchase a
modular PC or a solid state laptop and extend your warranty,
we offer a no risk money back guarantee. If you
(33:22):
need the warranty, you will be thrilled to have it
if you don't use it, and we refund your money
automatically every time. That's right. We are so confident in
the quality of our products that our extended warranties are refundable.
Many Shock customers use their refunds to purchase another warranty
or pocket the savings and move on. We all know
you'll need it to cover that expiring car warranty anyway.
(33:44):
Shocks refundable extended warranties just another way the Shrock Innovations
computer company makes your computer work.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
For you, all right, Welcome back in, folks. Aaron posts
on Facebook here, which, by the way, you can watch
the show live at Facebook dot com slash Shrock Innovations.
She posts that Groc regularly gets things wrong. I hope
you won't be responsible for reminding people to breathe, you know, Yeah,
(34:11):
GROC will screw that up sometimes, so and open Ai
is no better, guys. Open Ai gets stuff wrong all
the time, all the time. One thing that open AI
is really really good for, though, like chat GPT, is
if you find yourself in a medical situation and you're
trying to decipher what's going on. I mentioned on the
Aftershock last week. You know love the Kimberly's fine, the
children are fine, everything's fine in there. But we have
(34:34):
a family member going through a cancer situation right now
and she had to have some imaging work done fit
to find an obstruction somewhere or something. So they had
her drinking the stuff and it was it's you know,
not fun right, And my wife is sitting there thinking
to herself, why would you force someone with a bowel
obstruction to drink bowel prep. The whole problem is there's
(34:58):
an obstruction. Balloprep makes everything clear out so you can
get clean imaging data. If you have an obstruction, nothing's
going to clean out. And sure enough, you know, there
was a whole slew of negative repercussions from that situation.
And my wife is talking with the doctor and she's like,
(35:21):
isn't baliprep contraindicated for this situation? And the Doctor's like contraindicated?
Who do you think you are.
Speaker 7 (35:28):
Now.
Speaker 2 (35:28):
My wife's not a medical student, but she was asking
chat GPT and chat ChiPT is like, yeah, it's counterindicated,
like shouldn't be doing it. And the second doctor comes
in and was changing shifts and he's like, yeah, this
lady in here, she's like she thinks she's a freaking
doctor or something. She's contraindicated. And the other doctor is like, uh, actually,
she's right, it is contraindicated. What are you doing? Why
(35:53):
would you do that? You know you have an obstruction
in a garden hose. I think the answer is to
increase the pressure on the top of the hose. You know,
nothing's gonna you know, happen badly there fun times. So yeah,
so chat, GPT and AI can be useful for those things,
but I'm not sure I want one hooked up to
my brain. Right. So the idea here is, you know,
(36:15):
Neurallink is Elon's company where they're investigating you know, brain
computer connections. Now, there is some dystopian future that I
can see out there where you know, many many people
just like for example, it was a rite of passage
throughout all of time essentially that I can go all
(36:35):
the time. I can remember that. You know, women get
their ears pierced. You know, little girls go to Claire's
and get some idiot with a staple gun to shoot
a piece of metal through their ear and they scream.
Some people take their babies there to get it done
when they're still babies, so that they don't remember it
happening because it's kind of traumatic. But you know, women
get their ears pierced, and we don't think twice of
it now, right, It's like you have your ears purisd
(36:56):
okay whatever. Maybe someday in the there are distant dystopian future,
it'll be normal for people to put a brain implant
in their kid so that their kid can interface with
all the technology around them in the world and be
a productive member of society. Again very dystopian, I know,
but follow me on this one. So right now, there
(37:17):
are twelve people in the world that currently have neurlinks
N one chip implanted in their brain. These are like paraplegics,
you know, people who cannot function without you know, they
have no options, like literally, they have no options, and
the N one chip allows them to operate a cursor
which allows them to essentially send text messages and emails
and things like that and communicate. These are people who
(37:38):
can't speak, They have some severe neurological problem that is
preventing them from moving and speaking and doing all the things,
and they'd be locked in without the end one chip. Essentially,
the end one chip is giving them a way to
interact with the world around them through their mind. So
in that case, you can't argue that that's not pretty cool,
especially for those people. But taking a perfectly normal, healthy
(38:02):
person and implanting a chip in them that doesn't require
you to speak to the chip, that doesn't require you
to type on a keyboard or anything like that, or
even use stupid meta hand gestures that don't work to
activate the AI. The AI is simply activated by your thought.
And this is a quote from the presentation. If you're
imagining saying something, we would like to pick that up. Now.
(38:25):
I don't know about you, guys. There's a lot of
things that I say in my head. The dover got
out of my mouth. For the number of things that
get out of my mouth, you'd be very impressed by
my filters. Maybe not by the results, but you'd think
that the dumb filters, you know, like a cabin air
filter in a car when it gets really really clogged
up and starts to smell like a dead mouse. Those
are my filters, Like there's stuff full of stuff, and
(38:47):
sometimes you know, the granny pictures come out and you're like, Oh,
shouldn't have talked about that. Probably okay, moving on. You know,
it's something gets through the filter sometimes. Now imagine there
is no filter, that everything that curs to you in
every moment is being monitored by a large language model AI.
This person would know you at your deepest, deepest possible level.
(39:10):
This person, this program would know you at your at
your deepest deepest level. And if that application, that program
was allowed, it's interacting with you on a mental level. Literally,
it's a voice inside your head. It sounds really really biblical,
(39:30):
doesn't it. You know, I just I don't know about this. Well,
the FDA has approved given approval for limited trials for
people with severe neurological issues to be hooked up to
this and interface with with GROCK essentially, So I just
wanted you to know that that was out there. So
if you hear about that, there are currently twelve people
(39:50):
who have had their lives completely improved by this technology.
So I don't want to say this is an evil technology.
I don't think it's an evil technology. I think it
has an application and it has its place. But I
think the place that Elon sees it having is people
will no longer have to pilot airplanes and starships and things,
because they'll be able to do it with their mind.
Four zero two, five, five eight eleven ten number to
(40:12):
join us on the program. Welcome to the program, Monica.
How can I help you on compute this?
Speaker 6 (40:18):
Yes, we bought as a holiday special last year, thank you,
And you're talking about Windows eleven. Does it have it
in there or oh yes, you have to purchase it
then we have to pay for it.
Speaker 2 (40:32):
Great questions, Great questions, Monica. So any computer that you've
purchased in the last three years easily will have Windows
eleven easily. So so you have Windows eleven already. The
version that you have right now that was out when
you bought your holiday special was two four h two.
It's last year's version of Windows eleven. So there's a
whole new version of Windows eleven coming out in October
(40:54):
that you were going to automatically get upgraded to by
Microsoft and in nope, it happens over the air so,
and it's free, it doesn't cost anything. This is it's
going to add all kinds of new features and functionality. Honestly,
it's a really solid update. They added some really cool stuff,
like you can do some really neat things and paint
(41:16):
that you couldn't do before, you know what I mean.
There's some really good things in this update. But the
fact is, when you make that kind of that massive
of a change to somebody's operating system, there are always
unintended consequences. And so what we have found is that
when people just allow the update to naturally be downloaded
and installed in October like like will happen for millions
(41:38):
and millions of people, roughly twenty percent of them will
have some negative consequence, some negative outcome that is not desirable,
and of course they will call us about that or
have to come in and we'll have to take some
action to fix that negative outcome for them. And that
action that we have to take costs money because we're
not microsofting. We didn't break it, you know, we're just
(41:58):
here to help. We're here to fix it. And so
people come in and they're like, well, if I don't
pay you the three hundred bucks to fix it. Then
my computer worked last week. It's not gonna work that
way anymore. I didn't ask for this, I didn't want this,
but I was forced to take it, and now it's broken,
and now I have to give you three hundred dollars
to fix it, and we're like yep. So instead of
(42:20):
having that situation, we came up with a program called
Safe Upgrade, where it just like if you came into
the service center and said, hey, Thor, I want you
to install two five h two. If we install two
five h two on your computer and something goes sideways,
we're on the hook. You're under warranty, as it should be. Well,
if you purchase Safe Upgrade and you do it yourself
(42:41):
at home, this is a DIY at home software update
kit essentially that does everything the same way we would
in the service center. If you do it with Safe Upgrade,
you save thirty bucks off bringing it into the service center,
and you get a warranty just like you would if
you brought it into the service center, except you don't
have to unhook your computer and bring it into the
service center. You can do it all at home. Well,
(43:02):
we send you an email, we send you a we
literally we'll give you a phone call, a text message,
an email, a Facebook post. We'll put up some smoke signals.
I don't think those were last year. We couldn't do
that because it was canceled day they canceled. You couldn't
do Native American cultural appropriation. But now now we can
do smoke signals again. So you know, we'll do all
the things to let you know, hey, it's time to go.
(43:23):
And then for those people who don't go, we actually
get a list of those people and we call them
specifically and say hey, it's your turn, let's go, And
then we get everybody to install and so that way
you get the new update. You have a warranty, you
have no bad outcomes, and yes it is free, so
you're choosing to spend sixty five dollars instead of getting
something for free. But if you're that person that buys
(43:47):
the lottery ticket and always wins, you know, we're all
like that, right, you know, we're all like we always win,
you know, only we only win the stupid prizes, you
know what I mean. So if you're that, you're that
lucky person that's going to be in the twenty percent,
and it hits the same people every time. I don't
know why. If you're that person, you definitely want safe upgrade.
(44:09):
So that's essentially what's going on, Monica.
Speaker 6 (44:14):
And how much is the upgrade?
Speaker 2 (44:16):
Uh, the upgrade itself from Microsoft is free, so there
is no cost for the upgrade from Microsoft. The Safe
Upgrade product that we sell to install the Microsoft update
is sixty five.
Speaker 6 (44:28):
Dollars okay, And we don't bring it in. We just
call you and say, send this something or other.
Speaker 2 (44:38):
Well, you can buy it on our website at Trrock
Innovations dot com or see or yeah, or if you
if you're not, if you don't do the website, then
here's the thing. This is why we have so many
password resets. Some people just don't want to buy things online,
so they just call us in the service center and
say I'd like to buy one, and we'll sell it
to you right over the phone. We put it in
your Shock account, and then when it's time to go,
we send you an email that says, go log into
(44:59):
your Rock account with the same user name and password
that you used to buy it, except you called us
to buy it. But your user name and password is
your email address, and then you don't know the password,
so you do a password reset. That's why we have
a lot of password resets. That day. We started off
with six hundred copies of Safe Upgrade available. We are
down to two hundred and twelve. So it's well, I
(45:21):
wonder if we.
Speaker 6 (45:21):
Bought that upgrade when we bought the computer.
Speaker 2 (45:25):
Well, it wasn't available then. Just this just went on
sale like two weeks ago. Yep. So yeah, you don't
have one already unless you bought it in the last
couple of couple of weeks.
Speaker 6 (45:35):
Essentially, And so October first or October thirtieth, whatever, are
you looking at?
Speaker 2 (45:40):
Wonderful questions? They don't tell us. It's surprise. It's usually
a Wednesday. Usually it's a Wednesday. Usually it's a Wednesday
at four o'clock. And we're like, uh, come on, there's
an acronym for that. It starts when you know, and
it's like, come on Wednesday at four o'clock. But with
Windows ten expiring this time around, my guess is they're
(46:01):
not going to do it around Patch Tuesday, which is
the second Tuesday of the month. So my guess is
it's going to be toward the end of October, closer
to Halloween because that would be appropriate.
Speaker 6 (46:12):
Okay, all right.
Speaker 2 (46:14):
Thank you Monica. I appreciate all those are great questions.
I really appreciate you giving me the opportunity to answer
them for you. Four zero, two, five, five, eight eleven ten.
Got to take our final break of the program. George
your call as well as Samsung's new update for their refrigerator.
It proves the lovely Kimberly right once again. We'll tell
you what's going on coming up next on compute this.
Speaker 5 (46:32):
Computer problems usually don't just suddenly happen. Most failures usually
start out as small issues with few or no symptoms.
Over time, they grow into error messages, blue screens, and
other problems that can be costly to fix. Shrock Innovations
by annual preventative maintenance check up catches those small problems
now before they can to tastasize and become tomorrow's costly repairs.
(46:54):
During the maintenance check up, our experienced technicians perform up
to eight hours of tests, checks, autumnate repairs and optimizations
that keep your computer at peak efficiency while identifying potential
issues while you still have options about how to handle them.
When your computer gets its first check up, it can
see up to its twenty five percent performance improvement and
(47:14):
leaves our service center cleaned, sanitized, and running better than
the day you bought it. Just About every complex device
requires maintenance. Your computer is no different, especially considering the
valuable information that passes through it every day. If you
have not had your computer maintenance in the past six months,
you are overdue. Stop in or call any of our
service centers to arrange a free pickup to ensure your
(47:36):
computer continues to work for you.
Speaker 4 (47:39):
Today's fragile computers need maintenance more than ever. Your computer
needs a maintenance check up every six months to last
beyond it's eighteen month expected lifespan.
Speaker 5 (47:48):
Have you noticed that almost every piece of technology seems
to do its best to be disposable. Every day, people
tosk their phones, tablets, and other electronic devices because they
can't be repaired. Manufacturers have engineered their products to fail
on a schedule so they can extract more money out
of your family budget automatically every year or so. But
(48:09):
what if it didn't have to be that way. What
if you could get the performance of today's fastest computers
with the expansion and upgrade options you used to enjoy.
You just described Shrck's modular desktop computers. Having the right
tool for the job is important, and Shock's modular desktop
pieces packed the performance and flexibility to handle your computing needs,
(48:29):
from just checking the email to running a complex business.
Modular desktops are engineered to be easily repaired with widely
available industry standard parts. Every component is selected intentionally to
give you years of upgrade and repair options. It is
not uncommon for a short customer to be using the
same computer for a decade after they bought it. Modular
(48:50):
PCs are the most popular custom computers in the Midwest
for a reason. When you are ready for your next computer,
stop in to check out the Modular lifestyle or shop
online at Rockinnovations dot com.
Speaker 2 (49:07):
Alrighty, folks, final segment of the program. Thanks for sticking
with us. I really appreciate you being here for compute
this for the whole hour, and we really appreciate your
support at Shrock Innovations. Without listeners like you, without people
on Facebook interacting like you guys do, without your reviews,
without everything that you do for us, we would not
be able to do what we do for you. I
had the pleasure this week, and he's not awake right now,
(49:29):
so he won't hear this. But I had the pleasure
this week of watching my son working in one of
my service centers, and I got to hear him on
the phone interacting with a customer and the care and
the concern and just the natural just I was. I was.
That was like a proud father moment. And I wouldn't
(49:52):
have that moment if it wasn't for you, guys, So
thank you for that. You know, I often joking I've
been doing this for twenty six years now. You know,
most people don't go to prison that long. But you know,
moments like that, I mean that that makes it all
all worthwhile. So thank you guys for that. So for
zero two, five, five, eight eleven ten, George, welcome to
the program. How can I help you on compute this today?
Speaker 7 (50:14):
Hey, Thor, I have a least computer from you, and
it's coming up in November, I think when it's due.
And I also bought a mini computer when you had
it on sale. Yeah, and I was wondering if it
would be wise to maybe turn it in early and
(50:37):
get it transferred before later on in the season, or
when would be the best time to do that?
Speaker 2 (50:42):
Great question George, and this will give me the opportunity
to address something that came up this week. So we
have ended the Freedom Modular program at Shrock. It was
something that I thought was going to work really well.
I thought it was a really great idea. Essentially, it's
a computer rental program. Unfortunately, customers mistakenly thought it was
a computer financing program. In other words, you make thirty
(51:03):
six payments and you own the computer. Nope, you make
payments until you don't want the computer anymore, and then
you turn the computer back in, but you must keep
it for at least thirty six months, so the payments
never stop, and when you turn it back in, you
get your deposit back, and that's great. We have some
customers that were longtime customers that just stopped paying that.
You know, now I have to choose that we're going
to call an attorney to go after these people or
(51:25):
they're longtime customers. I don't want to do that, but
they're not paying their bill and they kept the computer.
And then we have other people. We had a person
contact the service center. I'm making my thirty six payment.
I just want to make sure that my payments are
going to end after this and we're like, well not
unless you bring the computer back in. Then you have
to turn it back in then. But I want to
have a computer like we know like that you can
get another one at that point or you know. The
(51:47):
idea was that we still have Freedom Modular and we
would just basically keep you going through the system that way.
So we are ending the Freedom Modular program. The best
time to bring it in you can't turn it in early.
You have to keep it through the thirty six month term.
So that's that's the first thing. If you're talking about
bringing in for a maintenance checkout, now's a great time.
We're caught up. Everything's looking good in there. As far
as the mini goes. The best time to bring it
(52:08):
in if you're bringing it in for two five h two,
we have to wait until two five h two comes out,
which is going to be in October. So you can
either do safe upgrade or you can just bring it in.
When we say go, A lot of people say, well,
thor how will I keep it from automatically updating? Just
turn your computer off. It doesn't do anything while it's
powered down, and then nothing's going to update. You can
just turn it off and then bring it in. We'll
(52:28):
take care of it for you. All right. So if
you have Samsung refrigerator like I do. I have the
bespoke Samsung fridge. It's pretty cool. You can change out
the panels seasonally if you want to make a tumnoll or.
My wife prefers white. She prefers a minimalist look. So
when there was the option to get the Samsung fridge
that had the screen in it, you know, the screen
that have a display and you could put like a
(52:48):
calendar on it and things like that, I thought that
was pretty cool. And my wife she said, eh no,
she said, I'd like the minimalist look. I don't want
to have a screen like that in kitchen. And sure enough,
once again she was right. Because now Samsung is announcing
they're going to push curated promotional announcements directly to the
(53:12):
door of your refrigerator that's right in your kitchen. Oh
my gosh, it's a pilot program. Samsung says we'll enhance
their services. So all I wanted my seventeen hundred dollars
smart fridge to do is keep my food cold. And
now it's like a billboard. It's like a live nudes
Vegas billboard in my living room, in my kitchen like like, oh,
(53:33):
what can I buy from Sam Sung today? I need
a new watch. Today's winner twenty five dollars Shrock Innovations
gift certificate is George. You got yourself twenty five bucks
and we'll see you all again next weekend for another
exciting edition of Compute This
