National correspondent with NBC News Radio,Rory O'Neil joins us here on kfab's Morning
News. Rory, good morning,Scott good morning. Doesn't look like Iran's
strike was successful unless it provokes Israelinto doing something more, which President Biden
says, we don't have a stomachfor. What's the fallout from what happened
(00:22):
on Saturday night. Yeah, well, we're now waiting to see just how
Israel will respond. So keep inmind. Initially, Iran claims that the
weekend strike or attempted strike was aretaliation against Israel after Israel launched a strike
into Syria and an Iranian diplomatic consulatecomplex there, taking out some top military
(00:46):
officials who had been helping Hesba Labwith funding and weaponry. So Iran carries
out the weekend strike successfully. TheIDF, working with the US and other
regional allies, are able to protectIsrael for the most part. And now
the question is how does Israel respond? As it a Biden telling Prime Minister
net Yahu take the win and tryto de escalate things. Yeah, I
(01:10):
mean, you talk about a winthree hundred drones, rockets, missiles,
and I don't know that a singleone of them hit their target. There
was certainly some shrapnel and other thingsthat did hit. A little girl was
injured, at little Arab girl.So right, I mean, this was
absolutely an incredibly unsuccessful attempt by Iran. But I think they had to know
(01:34):
that. They know Israel's got astrong air defense system and America was there
as well. Why do you thinkIran did this? They just had to
do something that they have been itand they warned that this was coming.
You know. Iran also said hey, we're going to attack soon and so
get ready for it. So therewas which Israel has been known to do
when it attacks Hamas targets in Gaza. So this notification of all this,
(02:00):
it's quite formal, it seems. But yeah, it was also not successful,
and again it really does show thelimitations to Iran's military when it comes
to these drones, especially, youknow those things. The drones can be
effective, but when you're launching themfrom Iran, they're in the air for
something like three hours as they makethat transit, and that gives the Israelian
(02:22):
American forces a lot of time totarget them and eliminate them. And then
a lot of the ballistic missiles thatwere being fired never got off the launch
pad, so that was another issuefor Iran's military. So yeah, to
your point, not a successful attackat all. And the issue is is
this an opportunity to just stand downand try to unwine from this spike and
(02:44):
violence between the two countries. Whatare we hearing, if anything, from
Prime Minister and net and Yahoo fromPresident Biden, from Speaker Johnson about what
we can expect next from Israel andpotentially America. Yeah, well, we've
got the Israeli War Cabinet meeting nowtrying to decide what's next. They did
send out the message that they willhave their own response at a time and
(03:06):
the choice at their choosing, ata scale of their choosing. As well,
there's been some scuttle butt that Iranmight try rather, Israel might try
some sort of a cyber attack inorder to get even, but that's all
unconfirmed. President Biden, as Isaid, is telling Israel just stand down,
take the win and the successful defenseas victory, and try to de
(03:29):
escalate. Meanwhile, Speaker Johnson hashis face with trying to approve at least
fourteen billion dollars in the aid andthe question of whether or not that aid
for Israel is tied to Ukrainian aidas well, because if that larger ninety
five billion dollar aid package somehow getsthrough with the help of Democrats, it
could also mean the end to SpeakerJohnson's reign with the Gable. He is
