Speaker 2 (00:21):
I'm joined now by Andrew Ortison, cricket officionado, who I'm
sure has managed to tempt the caterers from the Hagley
Oval to serve him up quass high at seven in
the morning. Good morning to you, Andrew. First up, just
give us a summary. Where are we at currently after
two days of Test cricket and.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
Welcome greeting, Sassie. I think that you have missed a
few opportunities here. Yes, they namely throw six drop catches
a few England England three nineteen for five in reply
to the three forty eight, and I think that is
going to be critical. Now if you've got Harry Brooks
in there on one hundred and thirty two not out,

(00:58):
Ben Stokes thirty seven with Olli Popercurs with the seventies
and Yesty part of that one hundred and fifty one
run fifth wickets, and I mean you said them, we're
in charge at seventy one for four with the dismissal
of Ben Ducket. But they've let that slip, yeah, through
those those butter fingers unfortunately. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
And Duckett of course was the first guy, wasn't he.
I think in the first session he was the first
man to be grassed. And then it just carried on
from there and it wasn't just a bad patch, it
was it was the whole day. They'd be very downcast
about that, not that they can do anything about it overnight.
What would you say, just one of those days?

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Oh yeah, I mean, and you know Tom Lathan put down,
threw himself as a skipper. I think the critical one
for me probably Harry Brook four times and even moments
through as I think, what you know, eighteen forty one,
seventy and one hundred and six so and he's just
you just can't afford to let him go. I mean,
even being Stokes a short cover Latham, I think with

(01:59):
the Stokes on thirty now thirty seven. But I mean
there's hope for New Zealand. I mean, the new ball
is just six overs away, and I thought we sure
saw there was other promising side to say one or
two things. One was I thought Nathan Smith looked lively
with the ball. Two wickets in his first nine legitimate
deliveries of Test crickets, including the wicked prize scalpe of

(02:20):
Joe Root chopping on for and also the spectacular catch
of Glenn Phillips and the gully to the Smiths. Ollie Pope,
who could feel, given the rest of the trend of
the rest of the day, could feel in such unlucky
getting the Smith's for seventy seven because that dived to
his right from Phillips at gully was a real cork.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
What was that reminiscent of the level Shane catch that
he picked up as well up against Australia. It was
a similar place, similar count.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Yeah, he's a brilliant gully. Well, he's brilliant anywhere. Phillips
I think in the field. Having said that he did
spill one, but it's just yeah, he is. He is
just gold around the field and you would not be
taking on his arm either. So yeah, that's really the
state of affairs. And Sony's a few quick wickets, but
you I suppose they could potentially concede a few runs

(03:08):
to England of the first things knowing that they're going
to be bowling forth of deteriorating pitch, but the hagi
over pitch from memory doesn't deteriorate that much. And yeah,
that'll be you know, it's just a bit of I
guess variable bounce more than anything towards the end of
test matches, at least my observation over the years, So

(03:29):
it'll be yeah, fascinating contest under less. I mean the
talk of some patchy drizzle in the morning here, I've
had a look outside. Does it's really just overcast sky
as the rain rain are not suggesting any drizzle to
any great extents. I think they will start on time
as per usual.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
And the beauty here is it's only two days gone
of five. Even though New Zealand have fluffed their lines,
there's still plenty of chants to tread the boards and
make up for it. And when you look at you
mentioned Smith, but I'm very keen on what o'rour can
do the pace that he was generating. Now it's not
all about pace accuracy as well. Scary bloke with a

(04:06):
ball when he's got the fire in his belly. And
i'd suggest after what happened yesterday the whole eleven will
be feeling propelled to greatness or to not fall like
they did.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
That's right, and I love the look of Iraq as well.
If you're look at that future generation coming through with
the ball, I mean just twenty three years old and
what he's able to produce and I think two over
the years. This team has the ability to compart mentalize
and not really be effective on what has gone on
on a previous day. And now they talk and naus

(04:39):
him about the process, but that does tend to work
for them and where they're able to actually put that
aside and move into the next phase of the match
and the match at this stage, given the way that
England are able to build momentum and keep things sticking
over with their aggression, it means there will be a
result by looks of things compartmentalized.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
It's odd. That's the first word I wrote down this
morning when I came in when I was putting together
a opinion piece around the day's cricket. So there you go.
Great minds or fools, not different, not entirely sure either way,
but it does present we would hope to be fascinating
three days. There is another black mark a smudge if

(05:21):
you will, on the proceedings. And that is again the
insistence on the bowling team not really caring too much
about how many overs they deliver throughout the day. That
this has got it may not and it probably won't
effect although it might affect things towards the end if
we get deep into day five. But what has to

(05:41):
happen here, Andrew? The ICC have got to come down
on this bowl your overs?

Speaker 3 (05:47):
Well, yeah, basically David Boons from Stars has to bristle.
It's metro free and he has to Yeah, that's the
twitch and he has to really lay down the law here.
I see. I mean that you seven overs show on
the first day from memory, I think eighty three os.
I think it must have been eighty two. I just
want a scorecard yesterday, so eight short? What's going on?

(06:08):
I mean, I'm over with children's cry. You always encouraging
the kids to hustle through the overs. I think that
the top team need to do it too, need to
set the example and get through the field because yeah,
it's it's just take it too long. Well, ultimately, part
is just a spectator, doesn't it. Because the spectator is
paying thinking they're gonna get ninety overs in a day
and they don't.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
And I'll use it too that God used yesterday by
Jack Messley that the fan needs to be put in
the center of the room. And that's what we need
to do. Andrew, have a wonderful day, do enjoy the
comestibles on offer, and I'm sure we'll catch up again
sooner rather than later. Thanks very much for that report.
Now back to the Quassan.

Speaker 3 (06:48):
Lovely. Thanks us really looking forward to it.
