Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, no white smoke just yet. Roy O'Neil joins. Now
our Corsemond have been following what's happening with the conclave,
and I guess here we go again. After they burn
all those votes, they're up and moving again this morning
for their get together and maybe we'll have one today.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Well it's possible. So they do two rounds of voting
in the morning, which they've completed. We saw the black smoke.
That means no one got two thirds of the vote.
So as we speak, they're having a meal and they're
having some conversation. So this is when the real politicking happens,
because when they're in the Sistine Chapel, there's not much
talking going on. Essentially, they're just voting because each cardinal

(00:37):
has to walk up raising that piece of paper with
the vallot with their name on it. As they walk
up to the altar, they place it on a plate.
They tilt the plate so the one single piece of
paper can be seen falling into the urn. Then the
cardinals says that this is their oath and they swear
that the name on the paper is the person they
think most qualified to run the Roman Catholic Church. Well,

(01:00):
that takes about a minute, right, and if we've got
one hundred and thirty three voters, that's your two hour
process right there. So it's a long slog for many
of these cardinals to sit through this. But the real
juicy stuff is happening now.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Yeah, And apparently they're I mean when they go in,
they are they're locked away. I mean they, like you said,
they're pretty quiet for most of the most of the time,
no phones. And I guess they go up to four
rounds a day because, like you said, it takes a
while to go through each round. I wonder what the
timeframe is between each round, you know, after they get

(01:33):
everybody's vote, then I guess they burn it and then
they just go back to wherever they are inside and
sit down and start praying again about it. And is
there any debate that goes on between the men at
that point?

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Apparently not. You know, don't forget when we started this
off yesterday. The whole process, the whole conclave, began with
these cardinals individually and as a group swearing to secrecy
about what happens in time. So it's difficult to get
an accurate.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
Look as to exactly know.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Yes, some stuff leaks out, but you know, it's hard
to get a comprehensive picture of what's going on inside.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
It'll be interesting to see, you know, who is selected
and what type of pope that they have selected and
where they lean their main focus in the world. US
Bishop Robert Barron was talking to CBS News yesterday that
he would mind seeing what he called a quiet papacy.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
Listen, what's wrong with the quiet papacy that kind of
stabilizes things a bit and allows the life of the
church to unfold.

Speaker 1 (02:34):
I wouldn't mind that, Yeah, And I'm not sure what
he means about that. Maybe not getting out as much
as Francis did, or not jumping on social wave issues
back to biblical teaching and scripture more, but just maybe
not so much out in the press, I guess, is
what they're talking about.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
I guess, but you know, it's twenty twenty five. At
the same time, I don't even know if that's possible
right now. But yeah, perhaps that the pope just six
more the matters of faith specifically and addresses matters that
revolve you know, involved the church directly, and that's it,
rather than making bigger pronouncements, you know, having x accounts
saying that we you know, talking about refugees or poverty

(03:14):
or something like that instead just focus on the church.
That's possible, I suppose.

Speaker 1 (03:18):
Well, I'll tell you where there's a lot of praying
going on. It's in the airport towers these days. The
FAA is having some serious issues right now. And I
guess it's you know, it's the age of the cell phone,
so everybody's got everything on video. But let's just call
it what we saw in Newark the other day. Down
for ninety seconds, the tower telling planes sorry, I can't

(03:40):
see on radar. I don't even know where you are.
That's not good in an airport like Newark.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
No scary stuff. And apparently this happened last fall as well.
It may have happened a few other times along the way.
So the FAA said it's taking some action to improve
the technology reduce the chances of this happening again, building
redundancy into the system. We're expecting Secretary of Transportation Sean
Duffy to have some comments remarks today as well, perhaps

(04:06):
talking about that final push to upgrade the system. But
it's also you know, we've talked about updating the FAA
for twenty five years. The thing is, it's also a
job that's never done right. I mean, think of the
technology we had twenty five years ago. There were no smartphones,
so even if you were to upgrade it, you'd be
updating it again. So it is one of those constantly
moving targets.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
Well, hopefully something's going to be done. You know, this
was Biden didn't do much about it, and you know,
the President says, well, you know, Joe Biden had 'te
know anything about it. The buck stops with the president.
So it's up to Donald Trump now to do something
about this. And you know, I think he's moving in
the right direction.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Congress has to pay for it, yep.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
Yeah, he can't just yeah, wave the pen and say
fix it. Here's the money. You're right, Congress does have
to weigh in on allocation of the money. Roy, thank
you for the update. I appreciate you.
