All right, Welcome now our numberthree at Home with Gary Salvin, taking
you through another weekend of well questionsabout our home or different processes. If
you'd like to jump on board leakyFoston's toilet or whatever's going on in your
home, do so. It's fiveone three, seven hundred. Maybe a
(00:22):
little decorating a temperesature is not badup there right now, we'll do it
all right here on fifty five krcDE talk station. Well, it's the
weekend. Welcome at home with GarySalvin. Another weekend getting a few things
taken care of, maybe examining differentareas that need your attention. I have
a whole list of things that Iwant to take you take your attention to
(00:47):
and focus on and make some repairs. But before we do that, let
me remind you you can grab aphone line it's eight hundred eighty two three
eighty two five five and ask aquestion about your home. In the meantime,
let's go to John John. Welcome. Hey Gary, I have a
question regarding your errow seal that youjust had the representative on a little while
(01:08):
ago. Yes, sir, yeah, and I had sent an email to
him some months back after you hadhim on and I never did get a
response. But I do have agas forced air system that has flex ducked
on it, and I have threedifferent separate heating zones. And my question
was, these are electoral mechanical dampers, and I was concerned that the ceilant
(01:34):
might in some way hamper the dampersfrom working, and it may If the
damper sticks, then what would Ido? And I did make a phone
call to a company and they couldn'tanswer the question. They said they wouldn't
guarantee that the dampers would continue towork after using a seal on the ductwork.
(01:55):
So my concern is, when youhave a system that zone using these
mechanical dampers, is it's safe touse the aerow seal. Yeah, And
of course I'm not going to havethat exact answer either, John. That
is a question that zach or theirtechnology people have to answer. Having said
that, my guess is it's probablygoing to be all right, based on
(02:20):
my experience of just standing there andwatching the way that ceiling is really pulled
to the outer edges of where thosepipes are connected, because that's where the
leakages occur. I don't know ifit would really mess with those dampers.
I'm very familiar with the damper systemand zone zone heating, but I don't
(02:43):
think so. But I don't wantyou to take my word for it,
and I'm sure if you, whydon't you just call up go to the
air seal thing, call their number, their customer service number, or again
go. I'd stay even in thecustomer service the segment rather than even one
(03:05):
of the installers, because I think, you know, not everybody has what
you have, so it's good.Yeah, well that was my question,
and I haven't been able to getan answered. I know my duck work
is linking. I go out inthe garage where my HVAC system is and
the main Planum, I feel airjust speeling out of the theme. So
this is why I'd like to havea field. But I don't want to
(03:28):
trade or solve one problem and tradeit for another. Yeah, I hear
you, I hear you. Well, I don't know if I was talking
to Zech on his cell phone orhis landline, but I'll text him here
during the next break and see ifI get an answer. But if I
don't, John, I would givethem another shot of getting on their website.
Theirseal dot com most places, andI haven't been on their website for
(03:52):
a while. They have a contactus number, you know where the where
I would think they would answer.I know you didn't have any luck the
first time, and no I didn't. And this is why it's something I
want to do. But I wantto do only if I can be guaranteed
I'm not. As I said,I'm not going to pay one problem for
(04:13):
another. Yeah, And that's whyI don't think i'd even mess with the
installers either. You're going to haveto go right to that horse's mouth.
So give it another try, andI'll see if he was on an landline
or a cell line, and maybetogether one of us will get an answer
for you. All right, Heappreciate the call. And again, if
you've got a question, it's eighthundred eight two three eight two five five
(04:35):
and again. The way the aerocoleworks, a different pressure inside the duckwork,
different pressures outside the duckwork. Thisaerosol, this acrylic aerosol is misted
or blown in through the duck workand his you know, if he has
airpower dampers, does that mess itup? I don't know the pressure inside
(04:59):
and outside. Different gravitates to theoutside, graduate goes to the seams where
there's different pressures, and that's whereit's ceiling. It's not necessarily ceiling the
entire lining of the duck. ButI'll check on their website too. They
should have a contact us number ortechnology number, and I will pass that
(05:21):
along. Also, all right again, our phone numbers eight hundred eight two
three eight two five five. Andas I was saying before we talked to
Zach, one of the things youmight look at first is just kind of
maybe thinking about if it's not beenwhere you've had the duckwork clean, that
probably encourage you to do that too. Rich. Welcome, Hi, how
(05:46):
are you today. I'm doing fine, Thank you, good good. I
have two questions. One, I'mtrying to clean a I believe it's cultured
stone part which has gotten stained fromwater came down through the chimney and stained
it. I've tried a couple ofdifferent cleaners, but it's just it's just
a mess. I don't know ifthere's any hope for that, or if
I need to get concrete paint orsomething and go over it. It just
(06:12):
looks bad. Yeah, So whatis the stain? Is it rust?
Is it a smoke stain, Isit a creosote stain? Or it would
be water stains some of it someof a dirt, Like the hearth goes
past the fire box and then there'sa sunken loadero so there's a step down
into it. So some of itis like from what traffic I'm guessing this
(06:35):
was ever stealed off. It's likesixty years older. Have you tried anything
like a tritonium phosphate anything something alongthose lines. That's a good hearth cleaner,
Okay, I can try that,Okay, So I think that would
be one of the things. Idon't know if it can. You know,
I don't really know what all thatstain is, so how bad it
(06:59):
is, how far it's sunk intothe material, I mean, things we
don't know. But Trey's Sodium Phosphateis a very strong, high powered cleaner.
It's you're gonna have to do someelbow grease, You're gonna have to
put plastic all around it. SoI would recommend either TSP or Quick Creep
makes one called they have a highdetergent, which is a TSP is a
(07:25):
high detergent. Masonry cleaner. Also, it comes in a quart bottle.
It's a concentrate. I haven't reallyused that, but it is a very
very high detergent. It may alreadybe something similar to a TSP. I'd
use either one of those in awood fibered scrub brush. Okay, and
(07:47):
then if if by chance, youknow, I can't get anywhere with it
or get it to look some muchbetter, would like concrete paint work on
stone like that? Well, yeah, but the question is is will that
stain and bleed through that paint?Yeah, I mean that's gonna be That's
gonna be the issue because you know, you got the kills products, which
(08:09):
are stain blocking primers. Like ifyou get a water stain on a ceiling,
you know how you get that brownline from the minerals through the dry
wall, you know, I meanif you paint over that, it'll bleed
through. So you'd probably have touse a stain blocking primer too. Quick
answer is yes, but again weare you know, at least you know,
(08:31):
with a stone part of things,it's difficult to bite into. I
always like to be a wise guyand say you can paint anything, and
that kind of falls in this category. You can paint anything, You're gonna
probably have to use a stain blockingprimer. It probably will be prone to
chipping. Right, try the TSP. Let's see where we get. We
(08:54):
can chat again, because there's otherproducts. You may have heard me speak
of, products like roller rock andspread stone. Those products would probably be
the ones I would really look at. And if you want to check those
out, there's a website. It'sdice d A I C. H Coatings
(09:16):
dot com and it's roller rock andspread stone. Both of those work on
stone on masonry, they're more ofa coating. They're pretty thick. Yea,
yeah, I'd probably ask them onthe need of a stained you know,
a stained blocker or you could justdo it, you know I that
(09:39):
kills oil based stain blocking, andthen do this roller rock. All right,
So we got a couple of thingsto work on, okay, all
right? And then just the otherquestion I have real quick is we pulled
up carpeting in one of the bedrooms. They're hard with floors and don't off
their oakre I guess maybe they're maple, but trying to get the stables out
(10:01):
of the floor, and no matterwhat I do, they just snap off,
and I've got like rounded implyers andyou know, there's no heads on
them, so they're just like they'rejust like pins sticking out of the floor.
And I don't want to, youknow, I'm trying to not threw
up the floor. Yeah, andthis is along the perimeter where the tax
strip was, Like that's the textureup. But they also had staple to
(10:24):
too, you know. So isit further than an inch and a half
off the uh off the marne? It's probably about that far. What happens
when they break off? Is thereany way to set that staple? Well?
I mean I was trying to likenot have to pound whatever well there's
(10:46):
left into the floor, but Imight have to do that, I guess.
Yeah. Yeah, if there's nothingreally to grab into, I don't
know how you're gonna get that out. I would look at like a number
one nail set which was pretty thin, and set staple and keep listening,
right, somebody might have another idea, but that would be mine. Okay,
(11:07):
great, all right, well, thank you very much. Great,

but that's the phone number. Let'sgo to Larry. Larry Welcome.
(14:50):
Hello. I've got a son thatlives in sugar Land, Texas. He's
got a front load clothes washer thathis towel when they come out, they
smell mildewy. I don't know ifit's moldy, but they smell. They
dry them, put them up there, we'll go visit them, take a
shower, and man, those towelssmell mildewy. Yeah, we clean the
(15:13):
seal around the door when we visitthem. That's step you want get a
black substance out. I don't knowif it's moldor mildew. And then they've
got a filter down at the bottomof that washer that you pull out the
filter, and then it's got alittle hose that you can drain excess water.
And I've done that also, butit's still we bought am new towels,
(15:37):
it's still smell. I don't knowwhat's causing that or what I can
do to solve it. Yeah.Well, first of all, some people
will tell you to pour bleach inthere and that'll take care of your problem.
And it might last for a weekto ten days, but it's not
going to take care of the problemwhat you have on those types of washers,
(15:58):
and step one is doing everything youdid so you were right there.
In several different appliances, there iswhat they call biofilm. Biofilm builds up
in closed plumbing systems of an appliancesuch as those wash machines, dishwashers,
(16:25):
hot tubs, those big garden bathtubs, and biofilm it's almost it's black gunk
and it's almost like it has askin around it, and that's what's causing
the odor. And you have tokill the biofilm. And I did this
(16:48):
to my own washer, and Ihad a friend of mine that did it
to his hot tub outside and itwas amazing all the gunk that came out
of there. So the name ofthis product is called Awesome. It's a
A H s O M E Awesomea H H s O M E AHH
(17:10):
s O m E dot com.And they have it for dishwashers, they
have it for spas, they haveit for different things. Now, this
probably isn't two ounces of a gel, Larry, so don't freak out when
you see the size of the package, because all you're gonna need are you
gonna need of this product is aboutmaybe a t spoon, maybe a half
a teaspoon. And what you dois you just follow the directions. You
(17:34):
run a load with that, runninga load without clothsing it, they should
say OK, And you just runthe whole cycle and you'll open that up
and there will be black gunk allover the place and then you can take
a look at it. You don'thave to touch it. Then I want
(17:56):
you to just run a without theawesome a clear cycle again and it'll flush
all that out and it'll kill it. And you'll probably have to use that,
you know, every quarter every halfa year, just to keep that
biofilm under control. It's a it'sa coming problem, and people just put
up with it. I don't knowwhy. Yeah, I don't like it.
(18:18):
I would almost go buy a topload clothes washer because I don't have
a problem with mine. Yep.And in a lot of cases now I've
had a top load washer that didhave that problem, but it's more problematic
with the front load washers hands down. Uh, But where I had it
a long time ago when we hada garden tub in the bathroom, one
(18:40):
of those big tubs. It gotto a point where i'd see black flakes
of stuff. We didn't use itthat much in the in the water,
and I use some of that andthen turn the jets on and oh my
gosh, it was it was somemess. It was pretty gross. But
there's a lot of black gum,you know, from just bacteria. So
(19:03):
get it online. It's called Awesome. It'll it'll answer your problem. Thank
you much, Larry. I appreciateyour call. All right, if you'd

Thank you very much, yes, sir. And then also you can
go to Arrowseal dot com a ER O S E A l dot com.
(22:56):
They got some videos on there. They also have some frequently asked questions.
I was searching for that one person'squestion about automatic controlled dampers, and
that seems like a real legitimate questionreading about how they just do it for
duckwork and furnaces, how they blockthe ceiling from getting on any of the
(23:19):
components of the furnace. They obviouslydo, and I got to thinking,
well, maybe it's the same thingabout the dampers. Maybe for that part.
It's kind of an unusual situation.Again. Calling that number I gave
is the way to go. It'sright on their website. All right,
our number if you'd like to jumpon board, it's eight hundred eight two
(23:40):
three eight two five five and Andrea, Welcome, Good morning, Gary morning.
I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving, had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Thank
you. That's good. I'm callingbecause on a US suggestion, I bought
a high chrometer last spring to helpme a lot a lot with my air
(24:03):
conditioning over the summer, and nowI'm paying attention to it and it's dropping
like a stone this morning. It'sthirty one percent. I want to put
a whole house humanification system here.I have a twenty one hundred square feet,
two story. It has an openloft area. I have fourth twentier
heat, which we hate. Sofar, I've gotten two estimates. I
(24:27):
live in Massachusetts, where everything's expensive, and the estimates to install it,
you know, with the purchase ofthe unit. This one was fourteen hundred.
One was fourteen fifty, So Iget that that's what it's going to
cost. So the question I haveis each of the two gentlemen I spoke
with a plan to use a differentbrand of humidifier. So I guess I'd
(24:51):
like to know if you have apreference and any other advice you give me
before I call another person or callone of those follows back. I don't
know if I have a brand. In fact, I have one on my
furnace, and I couldn't even tellyou what brand it is. I think
it's an April Air, but Ican't swear to it. The advice I
(25:15):
have is just when you're going intoit. There is maintenance required of that
unit about every year, so andit's not difficult at all. In fact,
I've got that on my slate tochange my filter on that thing on
Monday, so there is as it'snot really a filter, it's more of
(25:37):
a pad that's inside. You know, you have the casing, it's on
the ductwork. You lift that padoff and you pull out the pad and
you replace it, and that's whatwater. Water actually trickles down through that
pad. Blower turns on distributes alittle bit of that moisture throughout the house.
(25:59):
That's how how do you humidify orhumidifier works, How the humidification works
over time. If you didn't changethat pad, just the hard water will
cause that pad to calcify. Thewater will then just go over the pad
and it won't be able to stayin the pad. Figure that pad's like
a sponge, so you know,if there's spongesn't holding the water, you're
(26:22):
not humidified. So every year youchange that pad, you can change it,
or if you have the furnace service, they can change it. So
that's probably really it's a fairly simplething. The other thing is they'll put
it on. The water comes froma pipe, a plumbing pipe, you
(26:44):
know, real above the furnace area, and there's a little valve. There's
what they call a saddle valve.I would ask for a regular ball valve
installed. The saddle valves are prettysmall. It's a piece of eighth inch
soft copper pipe, and that valve'spretty cheesy. Just ask them to put
(27:07):
a ball valve in there instead ofthe saddle valve. Oh, thank you
very much, And they may dothat anyway. I mean some dudes,
Okay, it was, so Iwant to make sure because I read about
them first. This is I'm notlooking for a steam one. I'm looking
for the other kind, right right, Yep, there's no steam involved.
You'll never know this thing's even working. That's why you got that that humidity
(27:32):
gauge where it can tell you whereit is. And by the way,
this time of year, thirty onepercent is not hateful, Okay, it
could be a little warmer. Ilooked at mine this morning. It was
thirty six percent, and that's probablyperfect right now. So when it's thirty
two degrees outside, you're indoor humidityround thirty five percent, really between thirty
(27:56):
and thirty five percent. Put thirtyfive percent is the ideal number when it's
freezing outside, and I'm sure ourlow temperature was around that last night,
so I'm kind of right there. When it gets down to ten degrees outside,
even with a humidifier, you reallydon't want it much higher than twenty
(28:18):
five to thirty percent. And itwill, job, it will job.
It's gonna help me stay warm.Well, more humidity in your home will
help you stay warm. In otherwords, if it's ten degrees outside,
indoor humidity is, say, twentypercent, and your thermostat's set on seventy,
(28:41):
you're gonna be cold sixty five.Yeah. If it's ten degrees outside
and your thermostats set at seventy andyou got thirty five percent commidity, you're
gonna feel warmer. Okay. Andthe best thing is is, I don't
know if you ever had problem withskin cracking and dry fingers and all that,
(29:04):
that will be our scratchy throat. You know, the proper humidity will
help you not have those issues.Okay, all right, Well we'll get
it put in and I'll see thatit's somewhere around thirty five until it gets
to ten degrees. There you goso much. I appreciate it. All
(29:26):
right, you're quite welcome. Thankyou, Bye bye. All right,
we got a spot for you.Uh it's like everybody went chopping all of
a sudden. Any boy, Sowe've got open lines. You can grab
them. It's eight hundred eight twothree eight two five five, and we'll
(29:47):
talk about your home project or maybeyou have some maintenance that you're working on
or thinking about working on. Aquick tip. I know people are decorating.
I gave you this las weekend. But I'm gonna do it again if
you've got it, because I've seena couple of people not ruin a front
door, but do a little damageon a front door. Hanging a wreath
(30:11):
on your front door. I knowthey got the wreath hangers. It's real
nice. It goes over the topof the door. It comes down a
little wire on the back of thewreath. You got the little wreath structure
made of metal, boom hangs onthe on the hook that goes over the
door, and you're set right,Yep, your set. Well, here's
(30:33):
what happens over time. A lotof times those wreaths are just metal,
some are painted green, some havelittle caps over where those wreath structures are
made manufactured and that little metal pieceand people open and close the door,
(30:55):
and the wind blows and all that, and it scratches the paint or the
or the stain on door. Notthat it's not a big deal, but
it might save you a little bitof work. So before that's that wreath
goes up, just take a lookat the back, take your hand rub
over it. See if there's anymetal that projects out beyond that wreath ring
(31:17):
that's made of steel. And ifthere is, either snip it off if
you can, or get a tubejust bathtub cocking and work silicone cocking and
just dip that right on there andit'll create a little cushion. And that's
(31:37):
a great way to protect the doorif you're going to hang a wreath.
So I just want to pass thatalong. Well, take a little break.
When we come back, Tony, you'll be up first. Our number

(34:38):
information here about leaks in duckwork Tony. Welcome home here. Okay, yes,
sir, I had a that couldn'tbe here and clean my duckwork out
last year. And anyway, longstory short, I was getting I'm getting
(35:04):
dusk. So the guy comes inand he tells me he checks the furnace
out, and he says, andI got garbage filters. You know,
I'm nine jobs. And I thoughtI heard you say it one time.
I could be wrong, but don'tspend thirty dollars for filter. Got about
going for ninety nine cents and changehim every month. Well, I don't
(35:27):
know if I said that. Ikind of like to recommend pleated filters.
They don't have to be thirty dollars. It really depends on you know,
what you're trying to do and howefficient the furnace is. So one thing
I may have said when it wasvery very cold out, I may have
(35:52):
said, if you have a pleatedfilter that is an ultra allergen filter,
and you're upstairs bedrooms are colder thanthey should be, what you might do
is change that filter out with aninety nine cent filter, just to make
sure all that heated air gets towhere it's supposed to get because some of
(36:15):
those do you know, leaky duckworkcauses it. Real ultra allergen filters can
slow down, you know, themigration of the heat to those areas.
But all in all, I usuallyrecommend a pleated filter with a MIRV rating
of eight or above. What wouldthey call Well, that's the ultra allergen
(36:38):
is going to be twelve to fifteenbucks. A regular pleated filter for a
furnace it would probably be around fourbucks. So I do I'm trying to
do is eliminate dust. And thatwas the problem. Well, what if
you just had the ducks cleaned? Why do we have so much dust?
(37:00):
I don't know, That's what Isaid, you guys who are only here
a couple of months ago, Andall of a sudden I got this note
and he told me that. That'swhen he told me that I'm using the
wrong filter. I got to geta morning expensive filter. Well, it's
not going to hurt, but i'dbe I don't know if it's going to
cure it. I mean, youcould go ahead and and see if that
(37:22):
helps. But you know, whenthey cleaned the duckwork, did they clean
the cold air return and the regularheated air the registers did? Did they
clean that system and along with thefurnish unit itself, the air handler.
(37:45):
I really don't know because I leftthem out here and they comment here with
that big pose from the truck thatthey went up the stairs, and I
think that I don't know. Well, you know, not to alarm you,
but one of the things I wouldbe concerned about, to be honest,
I mean, i'd go ahead andchange the filter. He said,
go ahead, change the filter.See if that eliminates it. Okay,
(38:07):
so that's gonna cost you twelve bucks. Change the filter. See if that
eliminates it. My guess is it'sgoing to eliminate some of it, but
you're still gonna have dust because there'sa possibility they didn't do the clean cold
airy turn. There's a possibility theydidn't do the shelves on the air handler.
(38:28):
There's a possibility. And this isremember when I said that whole duck
cleaning business. There's some really goodduck cleaners, and there's some real clowns
out there too that don't do itright. And some of them. My
guy that I have in my hometown, he gets calls and goes in because
(38:50):
he's the best in our city, and he'll go in and he goes You
wouldn't believe how many times people suspectthat their ducks weren't clean proper. And
sometimes it's the homeowner's fault because theysaid, you want the cold air's returns
cleaned, it's an extra fifty bucks, and they go, no, no,
let that go, he goes.In other times they never cleaned anything,
(39:13):
And how would you know unless theycut into the duck work and show
you. That's how you find out. But you know, go ahead and
change out the fields. And ifit doesn't clear it up right away,
you know, in a couple ofweeks, i'd call them back in or
call them and get a second opinion. Oh good, I appreciate it,
(39:37):
all right, good enough, Tony. And again I'm not trying to take
an industry and slash and burn it, because there's some great duck cleaners.
And you know, the ones Ialways get nervous about is when they call
and they show up at your housebecause they said they would clean your duckwork
(39:57):
for ninety nine dollars, and allof a sudden they come to your house
and they ask you, do youwant to anti microbial spray spraight in there?
Oh you do? Oh that'd beanother one hundred dollars. Do you
want the cold air returns. Thecold air returns are as important, as
important, or more important than theregisters. So oh you want to use
cleaned it, Well that'll be anotherone hundred and fifty dollars. And oh
(40:22):
you say no, no, andmaybe they don't clean the duck work at
all. You see where I'm goingwith this, And like I said,
in our city, high tech duckcleaning, that's the place to go to.
They even did a as a experton an NBC news story. So
(40:45):
it happens. Just buyer beware, right, Karen, welcome, Hey,
good morning. How are you Garydoing great? Doing great? Thank you.
I'd be thanksgiving a couple of days. Thank you. Just have a
really question. I have a basementcompany floor many many years, so it
(41:07):
had carpet that was glued and probablyknow where I'm going with this blue to
the floor. I pull that,uh, and I think they have placed
a couple of times, but it'salways been a bleak carpet. I've sold
it up and of course there aremarketings all over the floor where the glue
was right. So I don't wantto I don't want to carpet with anymore.
(41:30):
And I have put down a coupleof area Russ and I like to
look and now look at it.That a bleak, gray marked up concrete.
Time to figure out what to dowith them. It's going to have
a stained But I wonder a nicecoaching product that you talk about a lot,
what kind of and I have notlooked at it. I just staly
(41:51):
talked about it. What kind ofprep for do you think I would have
to do for a floor that doeshave resident of glue? Yeah? Yeah,
you're gonna have to get that glueup, and there's ways to do
that with a floor grinder. Itlooks like a like what a janitor would
(42:13):
use for buffing a floor, onlyit's got a diamond pad where you would
grind that glue off. It's notan impossible job at all. It sounds
worse than it is, but that'syou. You're gonna have to get that
off. So you would use aa a floor grinder that would prepare it,
and then you would use their rollerrock product and a couple of coats
(42:37):
and a clear coat over that.It would be very durable and it would
do a great job. But yeah, there'll be some prep work involved.
Okay? Is that a huge generator? It's gonna it's gonna be some sure.
Yeah, I mean we're not gonnabe able to avoid that. You're
gonna have to cover up like anyair intakes and registers. And there's the
(43:00):
staircase going upstairs. You want tocontain that and wear a mask. Okay,
okay. When you say bowler block, is that actually a texture?
I hear yeah, No, it'sno, it's not going to be texture.
It's microscopic rock. But there isrock. It's a rock and an
(43:21):
acrylic resin and it's put on witha paint roller and it doesn't have a
texture. It's smooth, just likea paint. Karen, I got a
scowed Thank you so much for thecall. I appreciate it. I hope
you have a great second half ofthe holiday weekend. If you're on hold,
we got a lot of time totake your calls. We got Chris
