(00:33):
Well, the weekend, it iswelcome at home with Gary Salvin. Thanks
for joining me. Another weekend gettingsome things done around the home. And
well, let's a kick off tothe NFL and a lot of people are
going to be busy rooting for theirfavorite team. But we got some time
to get some work done around thehome and you can go ahead and join
us. Let me give you thephone number. We're in studio taking your
(00:54):
calls at eight hundred A two threeA two five five. All I was
brought to you by gutter Brush. And you know the leaves are going to
start falling soon, so now's thetime to take advantage of the gutter brush.
They're having a twenty five percent offsale. You can go to gutterbrush
dot com. There's a money backguarantee if you're not satisfied. It's made
in the USA. It's really anice way to keep those gutters free flowing
(01:19):
when the leaves start falling, keepthat rain water away from your foundation.
And again it's a gutterbrush dot comtwenty five percent off. All right,
as I said, taking your calls. Plus, I've got all kinds of
projects we can start looking at.And one thing as we hit the month
of Septembers. You gotta start thinkingabout the fireplace. You gotta start thinking
(01:42):
about do you have enough wood totake care of that fireplace and take care
of yourself. Is it been inspected, has it been clean? And those
are two different things, inspected andcleaned. A lot of people I think
have just kind of you know, there's those logs that cleans my fireplace,
(02:04):
and it does. They do apretty decent job. But what they don't
do is they don't inspect the chimneyand they don't inspect what's going on,
and a lot of times you canfind some things that can be really a
safety hazard. Just remember, wecreate a controlled fire inside our house and
(02:24):
we have to make sure that wecan, you know, safely remove the
gases and control that. So ifyou have not done that, I would
highly advise you to get on board. Get somebody to inspected. A certified
chimney sweep that's CSIA Chimney Sweep Instituteof America. Make sure they're certified.
(02:51):
They'll check the crown wash, thebricks, the mortar, the chimney itself
for kreoso built up, see ifthe liner has been cracked. All those
things help provide you with a safeburning season for the fireplace itself. And
also, of course if you supplyyour own wood, you know, probably
(03:15):
you should know. I'm sure youdo know that it has to age and
usually about a year once it's beencut and split and stacked properly, not
against the house, not in thegarage, but let the air blow through
it. You don't cover it witha tarp in. Hardwoods like you know,
(03:37):
oaks and maples and apple and thingslike that are your best best woods
to burn. You certainly want tostay away from many pines and soft woods.
All right again, our phone numberis eight hundred eight two three eight
two five five. Love to hearfrom you about what you're working on.
Great time of year to get someof those projects done, that's for sure,
(04:00):
all right, David welcome, youcan kick us off. Hey,
thanks, Garry. You'd had alady call in and ask about I think
a watt saver or something like that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, And
you asked to have somebody call inand give an opinion. Well, the
I don't own one, and Iwould own one if it worked, but
(04:25):
the power companies they charge on realpower. The meters only register real power
okay. And those devices have littlecapacitors in them, and basically the capacitors
are to help control power factor. But most homes or no home is charged
(04:46):
for power factors. Does that makesense? Yeah? In fact, I
read a little bit that call actuallycame through yesterday. I did it,
okay, Yeah, and that's fine, and nobody called, so I appreciate
you calling. And it's a wadesaver by Elon Musk has created this thing.
When I first and I heard aboutit, I just never really,
(05:09):
I don't think created. I don'tthink he created. I think false archiving.
Going. Well, that's basically whatthe whole articles that I was reading
said is they didn't get into theexplanation, but basically said, don't fall
for the scam, right right,And I'm on, you know, it's
just amazing, you know that theyeven in one of the articles I was
(05:31):
reading that the company's selling was saying, you have to keep them for three
months. Well, down here inLouisiana, we've had such heat that if
you I mean, my electric billssky high by by wait three months,
my bill is going to go down. So if I bought one now saying
oh, this is going to hut, my bill, Well, my bill
is going to be down because it'salready cooler. You know, it was
(05:55):
one hundred and five degrees you know, for several days, almost a whole
month, all right, So Imean it's it's just trying to give him
allusion that it will save money andnot spending. Well, that's kind of
exactly, you know, after readingalso after the show, that's exactly what
(06:15):
I came up with too. Youknow, there's so many ways to save
energy without buying a little box andsaying it's going to And I am a
good friend of mine did a goodardening show. He's passed away since,
but his line all the time,if it was that good, everybody would
have one, everybody. You wouldn'thave to look it up. Everybody would
just have one. And that's sotrue. That's right. And so if
(06:39):
you're going to try and save money, you need to put insulation in the
attic, make sure you have adequateinsulation, good windows, you know,
weather stripping around the doors, andyou know those kind of things do do
true, you know, infiltration andinsulation measures that would try to get some
kind of device that is making somebodya little bit of money. Every time,
(07:02):
right, they tell one that's aboutit. I used to always laugh.
And my upbringing was through hardware stores, and you know, the Black
and Decker people in these companies, they'd always come out with making a tool
that could make your job easier. You know, it'd be like a motorized,
battery powered scrub brush or something. And every time I would get and
(07:24):
try one of these things and use, I said, this is more work
than just taking a scrub brush andscrubbing. That's right, It's so true.
And yeah, manage your costs. One of the things, we haven't
been one hundred and five degrees.I'm in the Midwest. But one of
the things, we've had some reallyhot weeks and we've had some kind of
coolish summer weeks. And I wastalking to somebody this past week. I
(07:46):
said, we've learned to manage ourair conditioning based on the temperature. We
used to have the air conditioner onall the time. It was seventy eight
degrees. We'd had our air conditionerin seventy four and by just pulling shades
in the afternoon and then opening theshades and opening the windows on certain days
and night, we were able toactually reduce our bill this year just by
(08:09):
managing the sun. Oh yeah, mostly, and even trees you have planted
strategically, which it takes a longtime to make a difference that shading on
a house in the summertime. Butyou know what they're trying to do.
I think with that Watte saver isplay on the like I said, on
the reactive power savings. But largeindustrial plants that have motors and stuff,
(08:33):
they have reactive power, and thepower companies may charge them. They don't
always, but they may charge themfor what they call power factor and they
can save money. And any largecompanies don't have the electrical electricians that know
this and the electric electrical contactors, and they'll put in capacitors that will make
(08:56):
their power factor raise up to thelevel that's acceptable, or they don't get
penalized for reactive power. But residentialhomes they only pay for real power,
and most residential homes don't have apower factor that we would have any impact
on the electrical grid anyway. Sowell, you talk me a lot.
(09:18):
I can't say I have that muchin depth knowledge on it, but I
really appreciate your your comments and justthe brief reading I did last night.
That's kind of what I came upwith. The first headline I read is
don't fall for the scam. Yeah, and if you see if they see
it an article that is you knowthat says sponsored. I'll say, oh
(09:41):
yeah, it's the greatest things canslice bread and it saves money. But
make sure that you're looking at that. It's it's been put out by the
companies trying to promote them. Soanyway, that's my opinion. All right,
David Well, I certainly appreciate it, and thanks for calling the day.

All right, back at it,We go at home with Gary Salvon
another weekend, get some of thoseprojects done around the home. Glad you
could join me and if you'd liketo jump on board, talk about your
project. Love to hear from you. Our phone number is eight hundred eight
two three eight two five five. All right, that being said, let's
get to Frank. Frank, welcome, good morning morning. You talked a
(13:31):
couple of weeks ago. You talkedabout a product that sun kind of silicon
that you have put on the roofthat extends the life of the roof.
But I missed the whole thing becauseI was driving, so I'm not sure.
Food call and what the product isthat you recommend me, So I
(13:52):
can't say I'm really recommending. Iwas trying to just give the points of
what the product does. I havenot used it, I have seen it
used. It's called roof Max.So roof Max is a professionally applied coating
(14:13):
that goes over shingled roofs. Andthe purpose of that is is the way
a shingled roof fails is it losesits protective coating. That's the little grains
of stone or sand that protects theshingle from the ultraviolet rays of the sun.
(14:33):
If you have a thirty year roofwarranty, a warranty on a roof
that's supposed to last thirty years, chances are that roof will last year somewhere
around twenty three to twenty five years. Rarely do they ever last thirty years.
So roof Max was created by aperson that coats a roof when it's
(14:56):
about it, hold it before itfails. So over you know, the
roof itself. The shingles are losingthat protective coating every day to a degree,
and maybe when that thirty year roofgets to about fifteen years, there's
(15:18):
an opportunity to put this roof maxproduct or have this roof max product applied
to the shingles, which gives itanother five years protection and then maybe another
five years you haven't done again, and you know, it's significantly less expensive
(15:39):
than having the roof replaced. Now, you know I said they fail,
Say a thirty year roof would failtwenty five years. Once it's failed or
needs to be replaced, it's toolate for the roof Max. So there's
a you know, there's a sweetspot in there somewhere. Maybe it's twenty
years, maybe it's eighteen years, maybe it's twenty two years. But when
(16:00):
you start thinking, hmm, Imight have to have my roof replaced,
you can contact Roofmax inspector roof andthey'll say, yeah, we can give
you an additional five years of youknow before you have to replace it by
applying this coding and you get Ithink several opportunities to do that by adding
five years, five years, andfive years. So that's what that product
(16:23):
is. Where do I start? What do I call? Well, you
could probably go to their website.I don't have their phone number, but
you can go to roofmax dot comand probably learn a little bit. I
haven't been to their website for awhile, but I have talked to the
owner multiple times over the years, but I'm sure if you go to roofmax
(16:45):
dot com you can find your phonenumber. You can probably watch some videos
and maybe even learn a little bitmore than I just gave you there.
Okay, all right, Yeah,I'm at the at Year right now.
So that's good time. That wasinteresting. Yep, that's a good time
to inquire about it. That's areal good time. Thank you, Thanks
(17:10):
all right, Thank you appreciate it. Howard. Welcome, Yes, thanks
for taking my call. Gary orI'm calling from Louisville. You're on eighty
four eight whas down here on Saturdaysonly, right and I know the fifty
five k RC had you, soI'll give you a chance. Here.
I took a chance. I'm betrying to call you for several months,
(17:33):
okay, never get through, Neverget through. Busy, busy. What
I've got. I've got a housethat we bought in nice house, got
a crawl space. It's actually theyput cement down on it and they foamed
the walls and it's I got thirtythree inches of heights there. When I
(17:55):
look at it, first looked atthe house, it was nice and warm.
Down there. There's a heat pump. Nothing is insulated in terms of
the the vents or the pipes thatgo out to the various rooms. I
wanted to insulate in the fact thatit's got sixteen inch centers twelve inch choices,
(18:21):
and just staple up on the onthe round pipes that go out to
the various bedrooms to try to getthose a little bit warmer, because I
really don't like heat pumps, butI didn't have any choice in this house.
Laid down well, just insulate theyou know, it's not a tod
(18:41):
eight inch pipe and I think they'reten inch joices. So if I take
that insulation, then put it upthere and then staple it on the sixteen
inch You know on the sixteen inchjoy does it go through? There?
Is there any down? No?But you got to make sure you put
(19:02):
the insulation in the right way sothe paper will be it'll appear that you're
putting it in backwards. The paperwill be facing up towards the pipes.
And there's these little springs that straddlethe joys that are going to hold that
insulation in place. And Howard,I know you've been trying to call,
but let me put you on holdbecause I got to take a bottom of
(19:22):
the hour break and when we comeback, let's discuss it a little bit
further. So thank you for calling. Sit tight. We'll take that break.
We'll continue with Howard's call then, and if you'd like to join us.

(22:48):
back at it, we go talkinghome improvement, talking about your home.
We have open lines right now ifyou'd like to grab one it's eight hundred
eight two three eight two five five. And all right, Howard, let's
go with the rest of the conversationabout a cross space and insulation of the
pipes in the cross space. Soyou talk about the pipes being in the
(23:12):
joyce pockets, and then we weretalking about putting the insulation in and again
that that vapor bear should be paintpointed to the warmest part of the house,
so that paper would go up.So it feels like you are putting
it in backwards, so be mindfulof that, all right. And so
if it goes around the duck andthere's there's there'll be space. Then you
(23:36):
talk about a spring of sorts orsomething that's gonna periodically hold that up.
Yeah, it'll straddle the inside,It'll straddle the inside of the joys and
just hold that blanket up on there. So now, in terms go ahead
in terms of the insulation itself, really like not to use fiberglass because you
(24:02):
know, I'll be covered with itchiesand whatnot. Right, is there something
else that I could use in thatarea that I still could get up in
there? It might be pre cutit. Yeah, I'll tell you that.
Really the best thing for a crawlspace quite honestly. So they have
a whole system now pretty much likeencapsulation of crawl spaces that's big right now,
(24:23):
also encapsulation of even addicts. Ratherthan ventilation, they're doing encapsulation and
letting it become kind of a conditionedspace. I'm not saying you're gonna heat
it. I'm not saying you're gonnacool it, but you just kind of
let the temperature from the house filterin there and keep it warm, which
it does if it's properly insulated. And the way you would do that is
(24:48):
with foam. So you would foamthe underside of those joys and in those
pockets, and then you would foamor foam panels on the walls of the
cross space. Also you would closeif there was any ventilation there, you
(25:11):
would close those up. And thenon the floor area you would basically use
plastic overlap plastic. Some of theprofessional encapsulators will actually use a real heavy
plastic and almost an insulation underneath that, but foam is probably really your best
(25:33):
insulator at this stage of the game. They make it an open cell and
close cell, so water vapor wasThis home was built two thousand and six
they actually put that cement floor downin there and they foamed the wall.
Okay, now they stopped there. Now you bring up PHAM one. I
(25:56):
could put the an on fiberglass hopefullyinsulation up there and do just like you
said, could you also just bridgethat with let's say you just bridge the
the doist with two inches of inchand a half of the of the solid
home. Sure, so that's apossibility. Yeah, there's even Yeah,
(26:21):
there's even products out there that arespun stone and real dense called rock saw
r O x A L, whichare panels that are rigid panels that you
could literally nail up there and creategood, good insulation doing that also.
(26:41):
So absolutely, yeah, all right, all right, hey, I appreciate
this. I'll uh. I guessthe biggest tip for me right now is
I was ready to stafle up thewrong side. Yeah, we're not going
to do that, right. Andyou know one other thing, do you
have any idea where that temperature staysin that cross space during the course of
(27:02):
the year. Well, I'll saythis that it's nice and cool right now
because we've been air conditioning, andmy fear is that, hey, far
you know twenty feet on that eightinch pipe with a heat pump, I'm
never gonna get any warm air inthat bathroom back there with the unless it's
an emergency heat. This also hada hot water recirculating and I can and
(27:29):
I had to replace the circulating pump, which well that's a wonderful thing you
right right familiar, So we didn'thave it, But I can tell how
fast that cools off even though thatpipe is insulated with just the you know
them you put around pipe. Thereason I asked that question is when you're
talking about a whole house or wholearea encapsulation, addics and cross spaces.
(27:57):
Really, when you think it through, if the if the water vapors contained
on the floor, which it iswith a concrete they probably put a vapor
barrier underneath that you got and yougot the walls insulated. The real question
is do you really need insulation aroundthose pipes? Okay, because it's you
(28:21):
know, it's kind of a conditionedspace now, and and you know,
I I hear what you're saying aboutthe heat point too, but it would
it would be interesting to see exactlyhow cool it really gets in there,
and it's you know, the thethe heat's a little bit different than water
because you know it's it's going tobe passing through it's not as dense as
(28:45):
water. I just don't know ifthere's going to be a return on an
investment. Oh, I understand whatyou're saying. Yeah, so yeah,
so maybe I'll do just the oneareas that go back to the far bedroom
right where it's not gonna hurt anythingbecause it'll it'll cut down noise too,
(29:07):
and so yeah, I don't know. You can give it a try or
just keep check and see where thetemperature is through the course of the winter.
Now, now, if you don'thave anybody waiting, I've got another
I would like your answer to anotherquestion. All right, if you've got
people wait and don't worry. Oh, go ahead, all right. They
(29:27):
buried the bricks on this house upto two layers, and I know that
I believe that's a no no.That they did have termites here at one
time. They took care of them. But anyway, I put twelve by
twelve walk stones down in there dogthe channel, and I've got three inches
(29:48):
three inches two by four just holdingthat back right now. Hopefully I can
remove those unintended consequences. I cansee the leaves are going to build up
that gutter guard you talked about.Sure they're and I think I could stand
that, Like it's a gutter, right, how would you attach that then
to the you know, I gotthat inch and yeah, if you laid
(30:12):
it down in that opening between thebrick and the stone. They make it.
I think the smallest size is threeinch. But it's like a big
bottle brush. I think if youjust pushed it down in there, you'd
be fine. Oh yeah, Isee, I hear. I'm thinking,
I got to put it on thetop, right, put it down.
(30:38):
It's advertisement. Yeah, it's gutterbrush. You can go to their website
or you can even give them acall. So it's gutter brush. And
yeah, they're finding all kinds ofuses for this, they really are.
And I fact I use it ona drain pipe from an underground French drain
that comes out into the yard andthe squirrels get in there and he'd start
(31:00):
packing nuts in there and leaves, and I took a gutter brush and slid
it in there and that eliminated thatproblem. It still flows great, So
I know they make it for thesmall gutter I don't know whether it's two
and a half or three inch, but you can push that down in there
and I think it'll totally eliminated.Yeah, And I was just going to
(31:21):
go along with the the my airelectric air flower thing you know everybody has,
and just blow the leaves up offthe top then rather than have to
go down there approximately nine ten inchesin order to I think that would be
fine. I think it would workvery well. All right, good,

(35:19):
it. It's thirteen minutes before thetop of the hour. And by the
way, if you have been tryingto call in, I keep here to
night. You're it's really hard toget in. It's really hard to get
in today. You're a busy manto get a hold of Gary. Yeah,
today it's really easy to get in. You got a couple open lines
right now, at least four orfive, so grab them. Danny is
ready to take your call. Ourphone number is eight hundred eight two three
(35:43):
eight two five five and Jeff, welcome. That was easy to get in,
Gary, I hear you. Hey, I was listening to your fellow
from Louisiana talking about heat and humidity, and I was kind of scoffing and
thinking to myself. Man, Firstof all, I could never live in
an area I'm not conducting. Yeah, the swamp is just not my forte.
(36:09):
The mosquitoes are bad enough, butthe humidity would kill me. I
can't handle heat and humidity. Buthere's the thing. People, people really
confused Gary about temperature and humidity. And there is a ginormous, ginormous divide
of intelligence. People think, well, it's ninety five degrees out, yeah,
(36:30):
but if it's fifteen percent humidity,it's wonderful, especially you throw a
little breeze in there. There yougo. And folks don't realize there's a
dry heat, and then there's there'sa there's a wet heat, and that
in your house, especially in thesummertime. And well, there are two
seasons when your furnace or your airconditioner won't run at all, right,
(36:52):
and what happens is your house buildsup huge amounts of humidity if you especially
if you have if you have central, you don't have windows open year round.
And so what folks don't realize isyou got to get rid of that
humidity, especially in the summertime, because you're just going to die. And
now your central air unit's going towork up to the point, but it's
(37:15):
going to struggle removing that kind ofhumidity even in the summertime when the air
conditioners are running full time. Now, my wife and I we figured out
a little trick here that we cansave almost forty percent on our electric bill
during the summertime. For sure, and what we did was he bought a
couple five court doomidifiers and put thema corner to corner far away from each
(37:37):
other, exhausting them both toward thefurnace air conditioning unit. And then we
put a floor fan at the topfloor of the steps, the basement steps,
aiming that air straight down to thebasement. And it made an absolutely
(37:58):
enormous, an enormous change to ourelectric bill. We're able to live comfortably
in our house with eighty five degreesGary, I'm not kidding, buddy,
I'm not making that up. Andthe beautiful thing about that is is we're
also saving between thirty and forty percenton our electric bill. Because here's the
(38:19):
thing, folks don't realize that today'sdemidifiers and fans and it's a floor fan
efficient forefans. These things are somuch more efficient today. The compressors in
them are fabulous, the fans areabsolutely fabulous, and there are some things
you can do. And by theway, the Deo medifiers absolutely help purify
the air in your house. Itjust takes all the crap right out of
(38:40):
the air and you're comfortable season round, and folks, just really that's the
confusion about people. They think, man, it's just so hot out because
of the temperature. But man, take a look at the humidity and the
due point. That's the killer.Anything above anything above sixty due point for
me, Yeah, for me asa killer. And in this summer,
(39:01):
we've had a due point. Idon't know, Garrey, if you've been
following the weather, the due pointshave been enormous. Here in Ohio,
we've had a really yeah, itwon't go away. Finally it is.
It's starting to feel really nice outright, right. But now we talk
about humidity on this on this showan awful lot, and you know your
benchmark during the summertimes, if youcan work on getting that thing, that
(39:24):
humidity level around fifty percent, that'sthat's very very comfortable. I too work
at that, and we talk alot about that. I have a dehumid
a fire and I also have anair exchanging unit so you have controlled of
ventilation. That's also very helpful. Also talked about running the fan on auto
(39:47):
in the summertime, not on onbecause as those coils and you know,
become saturated with humidity from your conditioner, and if it's on, it's blown
it right back up. Through thehouse and so that helps. Also just
to add another tip to yours,Jeff, I just wanted to put that
in. And you also, humidityworks in a stack effect. Moist Air
(40:14):
will settle at the lower parts ofthe house and then continue to build up.
So again, placement of a dehumidifieris important. And also I noticed
you said you had a couple, and that's really good. Pay attention to
the size. Most people that strugglewith controlling the humidity inside their home,
(40:35):
it's because they have undersized deumidifiers. So everything is what you say is true.
I appreciate the call. We havemoved our thermostats when we started really
getting serious about controlling the humidity. When the humidity and the dew point,
as you say, was high, you know, we'd have to have that
(40:57):
air conditioner on seventy two. Wehave ours at seven eight all the time
and that humidity under fifty percent. It's very comfortable. Rob, welcome,
Yes, good morning morning. Iwas wondering about air conditioners, and you
know air conditioners, the air conditionerthat we're replacing now, you know,
(41:22):
there's obviously heat pumps an option, there's you know, all different levels and
things like that. What type oftips would you would you suggest for someone
who has to replace an air conditioner. Well, I'll tell you what.
The first tip is, the mostsimple tip of all, Bob, and
I mean this sincerely, and thatis find yourself a good HVAC company,
(41:42):
because the good HVAC companies are goingto help educate exactly what you're looking for
and how you're going to use thatair conditioner and properly size it. Those
are all really key points. Andyou say, well, that's a cheap
answer. Well, let me tellyou. These heating companies now where you
literally size your own air conditioner ontheir websites, and that's bunk. I
(42:07):
don't want to size my air conditionI want a professional to size my air
conditioner. And do I want avariable speed blow er? How am I
going to use that blow or doI want a single speed? What are
my energy needs? You know? Those energy increases, you know, I
think they're over twenty now. Probablysix years ago. I put in a
(42:28):
seer nineteen and at that point theywere, you know, just moving the
seer numbers up to I think thirteen, so you know I was going to
be in the house, you know, for a longer period of time,
so I went with a higher seerrated. But I hear so many people
that struggle again with humidity rob andit's because the dog one air conditioners sized
(42:52):
wrong. If they're oversized, theyshort cycle when they don't get the humidity
out of your house. So I'mserious. Finding a good HVAC company is
the key. I even talked aboutit yesterday. And get on one of
their maintenance programs where you can discussproblems and in these these folks can make
(43:14):
adjustments and they're there every year.So that would be my tip. Okay,
well, thank you. I appreciatethat. All right, you're welcome,
thank you. Sure mm hmm allright. Uh yeah, And I
know a lot of people thinking aboutthat now. Going into a heating season,
people are gonna be looking at gettingthe furnace, you know, inspected
(43:34):
and tuned up. They're gonna getsomewhere, gonna get bad news and you're
gonna have to replace it. Geta second opinion. Number one. Number
two is really concentrate on what youwant. What do you want that to
do? I know, cool thehouse or heat the house, that's basic,
but other things, how you know, energy savings, how important is
(43:55):
that you know, and how muchcirculation. What were the problems with the
old unit? Was the upper bedroomseven or eight degrees warmer than the rest
of the house. You can correctsome of those problems. Now, all
right, here's our phone number we'retalking about your home. It's eight hundred
