(00:30):
Well the weekend. It is Welcomeat Home with Gary Salvin. This hour
was brought to you by Roto Routerplumbing and water clean up and what a
great job they do. And ifyou've got a couple of things around the
home maybe that are causing you someissues and you're plumbing, I want you
to, you know, just gatherthem up, write them down and get
our friends at Rota Router out thereto help take care of those problems.

(00:54):
Wasting water can get expensive. Andof course if you have an issue with
a you know, failed some pumpand a flood in the basement, rot
A Router there is therefore you alsofor the water cleanup. So it's rotoreruter
dot com and check it out.And also if you're looking for a new
career, they can help you therealso. All right, we're talking home

(01:17):
improvement and you've been talking and sayingit's hard to get in, Well not
today. We have open lines andif you've been trying to get through for
the last couple of weeks, Ipersonally invite you in. Danny Boy is
ready to take your call. Ournumber is eight hundred eight two three eight
two five five. You know, talking a lot about humidity, heat.

(01:40):
And you know, we also talkedabout energy savings. We talked a lot
about that over the last uh probablysix months as energy prices start creeping up
and up and up, and youknow, it's really a lot of basic
things that can be done. AndI cant a list of some basic weather

(02:02):
stripping tips or energy saving tips, and quite honestly, one of them outside
and maybe a good day to dothis. If you've got a compressor outside
heat pump and you've got bushes inthat area, take a look and see
if they're restricting the airflow. It'san important part of that work, and

(02:25):
the whole units, even the airhandler in the basements. It's a lot
of it's all about airflow. Butthose bushes really need to be trimmed away
a couple feet from the compressors outside. When you're mown grass, don't blow
all the clippings onto the heat pump. It's just gonna make it work harder
on the inside. When was thelast time, you know, you really

(02:47):
pulled that air conditioner filter or thatair handler filter out and replaced it.
I don't know, maybe you're realgood about it. The pleated ones really
need to be replaced. I wouldsay every ninety days. That's the recommended
amount of time it should be leftin the air handler. If you have

(03:08):
a busy household and a lot ofrunning around in that house, maybe you'd
take a look at it every sixtyseventy days. But an air handler that
filter, take a look and makesure that thing is replaced. Make sure
the vegetation everything is trimmed away fromthe compressor outside those little tips. It'll

(03:30):
help you running ceiling fans. Anotherway to just stay a little bit more
comfortable moving air is dry air.Okay, But on your air handler,
that fan mode should be on auto, not on on in the summertime.
All right, that being said,I'll give you the number one more time.

(03:52):
Fill them up. It's eight hundredeight two three eight two five five
Joel. Welcome morning, Gary morning. So I wanted to follow up on
that exact thing you were just talkingabout, shutting the fan off after the

(04:13):
cooling cycle has completed in order tonot evaporate all that water on the coil
back off into the air and kindof negate what you just tried to do.
One of the features on these newdigital thermostats. If people don't know
this either your contractor or if you'regood at going into the settings yourself.

(04:35):
A lot of the new digital thermostatshas something called d HUM drain time,
and what this will do is ifyou have your fan set on on after
the cooling cycle has completed, thiswill leave the fan off for ten to
fifteen minutes and allow that water torun off the coil and down the drain

(04:56):
before it turns your fan back on. Okay, so that is available on
most of these digital thermostats now allthese days because because like you say,
moving air is dry air, don'tyou definitely don't want to have that evaporate
back off and completely negate, whichyou just did. But check that out.
If you have a digital thermostat, have your contractor take a look,

(05:17):
or if you're good at it,you know you can get the directions and
do it yourself. Sure, dHM drain time, d HUM during time.
Are you in the business, PaulAh, Yes, I am.
I work in heating and air conditioning. Good. I got a couple of
questions for you. Sure, Sohere's the crazy thing this is, do

(05:38):
you tell people you know? Imean, if if we didn't have the
information you just gave me which Iwas not aware of, and I thank
you for did you did you usedto tell people to leave the fan on
or off during the cooling season untilthis came about. We would recommend you
know, we will leave it upto the homeowner, but we would recommend

(06:01):
you know, the same thing thatyou are saying. You know, you
can negate what you're doing if youleave that fano because you're going to evaporate
all that watermeg off. But thatis something they've added in the last few
years, these manufacturers having It's great. Well, I've been in my background
was in hardware stores. I've beendoing this talk show for thirty seven years.

(06:23):
I've talked to a lot of peoplein the HVAC business, and until
last year, I was always toldto leave the fan on in the summertime.
In the wintertime, and a fellacall just like yourself and said,
hey, you got to turn thatthing off in the summertime. And I
was having humidity issues in my house. Yeah, I was running around sixty

(06:45):
two percent and it just wasn't comfortable. And he goes, just just turn
your fan to auto and you're goingto eliminate the problem. And I started
laughing. I said I bet I'vetalked to twenty five HVAC people when they
all tell me to leave it on, He's just just try it, and
within two days my problem is clearedup. And another thing that will go

(07:09):
ahead, the other thing that willrise your humidity in the home. If
you've got an air exchanger in thehouse, you know you're what that's doing
is it's bringing air in from outside, an exhausting, stale air from inside.
A lot of times those controls areset to run at a minimum speed
constantly, and that will really bringhumidity in the home all summer long.

(07:30):
So what you need to do ishave a contractor add a timer to it,
or get a control that will allowthat to run twenty minutes out of
the hour, and you can justleave it set at that all year round.
I have an air exchanging unit inmy home. I never had humidity
issues with it, but then oneyear, about two years ago, I

(07:51):
started having some issues. I actuallyeven turned that off. I turned it
off and on. It didn't mattera whole lot. That wasn't the issue
in my case. But I'm tellingyou turning that fan uh to auto in
the summer, And I love yourpoint about the new thermostats. I will

(08:13):
check that out. I don't havelike a nice little ness thermostat at my
house, but but I will checkthat out. But I just done test
too, Gary. Uh. Inthe summertime in the area where I'm at,
Wisconsin, you can run twenty totwenty five gallons of water kind and
say water down the drain a dayin a twenty four hour period. Yeah,

(08:35):
with the humidity. So you know, if you're leaving that fan going
and you've got a cup of wateron that coil that's going right back in
the air every time the cycles off. Yeah, it was amazing, though.
You're you're you're one of the fewfolks that I've talked to in the
industry that knows that I'm not tryingto knock the industry. I just had
talked to a lot of people andno one, no one ever said,

(09:00):
hey, don't do that till acaller camp called in. And I've passed
that information on a lot and I'vehad just you know, as you can
expect a great response like wow, that really saved That really saved me.
So I appreciate the information you justgave me. I will add that to
my repertoire too, because as theperson from Louisiana called, you know,

(09:24):
there's a big difference between you know, seventy eight degrees and seventy percent humidity
and seventy eight degrees and you knowforty five percent humidity in terms of comfort
inside our homes. Exactly. Allright, my friend, thanks much.

back to the phones, and ifyou'd like to jump on board, there's
a lot available for you. Let'sgo to Keith. Keith welcome. Hey,
I got a question of curiosity foryou, all right. Right,
I'm laying brick outside, and assoon as I start mixing the mortar mix

(13:30):
with water, and all the whileI'm putting it down for the brick six
eight hours a day, the fliesjust swarm. And I killed dozens of
flies a day while I'm working outthere because they just won't leave me alone.
Do you know what the trax fliesto what mortar makes? You know,

(13:50):
what tracks flies is moisture and food. So I guess the mortar mixes
uh well enough that that's being attractive. I'm guessing, you know, all
insects want food and water, Imean and or forever searching it. So
that would be my guess. Idon't know if that's right or wrong,
but that would be my guess.Yeah. It's a real pain because if

(14:13):
I spend it seems like I spendhours swatting the flies instead of doing the
work. You know, Yeah,I don't know if they're you know,
there's definitely fly traps and flight toturns around it. I don't know where
are they at when you're actually puttingthe mortar on the brick or is it
in the mixing where the mixing hastaking place. Now it's mostly on me

(14:39):
on you, but yeah, theyhang around the brick too. But they're
constantly crawling on my hands, whichI find very irritating. Maybe just because
my clothes, but yeah, maybejust because again just the moisture from sweat
or just working. If they're onyour hands, maybe gloves might help again,

(15:01):
just uh, just kind of guessingthat that's what the case would be.
I'm not sure there's a lot you'regoing to do about it. People
got to tip on that. I'dbe happy to hear that too. It's
tip day, all right, let'sget to Richard. Richard welcome. Oh
thank you. Gary. I don'tget a chance to listen to you much,

(15:22):
but man, I'll tell you youyou give a lot of good information.
And you know I have a septictank, and you know everybody they
gave there's all kinds of products outthere that you can go put in your
septic tank to get the bacteria movingand that they'll battle take care of the
paper and and and you know theother stuff that's in there. Right.

(15:46):
Uh, But I'm saying, youknow, Gary should Garry's a guy who
basically I think would know. SoI'm saying, I'm gonna call him because
you can go and buy all kindsof products and I get what am I
getting what I want? And I'msaying, I want to get the best
stuff that I know is available.Yeah, well, you know there's there.

(16:08):
There is one that has been outfor years and years and years,
and it would certainly be of goto product. Their products are actually by
numbers, and I might have thenumber wrong, but the website is Aerobic
r O E B I C andit's robic e R O E B I

(16:33):
C and it's aroobic dot com andI think it's K sixty seven. Is
their septic tank maintenance, you know, to keep the bacteria in balance.
Now you know this, this isa helper, right, it's a maintenance
product, obviously you know it.There there's always signs that you get that

(16:57):
the septic tank needs a little extrahelp and maybe even needs you know,
pumping out. And that's like troubleflushing the toilet. The toilet's constantly backing
up. Maybe the pipes are gurglingor drains really slowly, or you start
seeing the grass is green and weknow what that is to or the reason

(17:25):
I'm concerned is because you know, the thing is that that they have a
filter now that you have to have, it's the requirement. And so basically
the paper, the paper gets intothe into the filter, and I'm saying,
if you don't, if you don'thave a bacteria, it is going
to eat some of that paper upand stuff you're gonna have, you're gonna

(17:48):
open it up, and the guy'sgonna say, oh, well, you
don't really need to pump out.We just clean this out here. But
we'll pump it out anyhow. Itcost you a hundred a couple hundred dollars.
And when the point is that basicallyit's only the paper it's stopping to
stopping the thing from flowing. Ijust went on Aerobic's drain site. There's

(18:11):
a Aerobic ninety seven, which isa mainline cleaner, and then there is
Aerobic sixty seven that I mentioned, and it does say for draining trap cleaning
including waste and paper. Ummm,so let's see there's aerobic fifty seven.

(18:33):
I don't see what the heck thatone says, but the sixty seven appears
to be one. Let's see opensopens clog systems. Is the system clogged
in that you're well, yeah, well basically that that's what happened to me.
And I had I had it backedup and then they you know,
and I dug out the hole sothat they could pull up the They came

(18:59):
and they pulled up the things andthey came off so fast that the guy
basically when I got done, hehad already pulled up the trap and stuff,
and he said, well, yeah, you have a lot of paper
and everything blocking it. Yeah, yeah, I would you know, if
you're looking at something that's going tohelp reduce it, it mentions the paper

(19:21):
on the K sixty seven, Sothat's what I would check. All right,
thank you very much. Coming up, we're going to talk garage doors

Slash career all right. Thirty threeminutes after the top of they are

(22:30):
at home with Garry Sullivan, whichalways means it's time for our project of
the week. And what we're goingto talk about today is garage doores and
different trends in garage doors. Andreally, if you look at your house,
especially if the garage is facing thestreet, it's probably a third of
the front of your house, andsometimes we like to talk about trends,

(22:52):
and that's exactly what we're going todo. We're also going to talk about
the energy efficiency of garage doors andhow to purchase a garage door. Joining
us is Tina Miehler. She isthe marketing director at Hostdor and Tina,
welcome to that Home with Gary Salvin. How are you. I'm doing great,
Gary, thank you for having meon the show today. I really

(23:15):
appreciate it. You're quite welcome. So let's just talk about Hostdoor. Kind
of give us a kind of abackground about Hostdoor, and then we'll get
into trends. Sure. Hostdor isa family owned company, and they purchased
the company back in nineteen forty seven, and they purchased it with the desire

(23:40):
truly to serve the garage door dealerindustry because they were dealers themselves. They
were selling garage doors, and theyjust couldn't get a manufacturer to service them
like they had hoped, So theythen decided to manufacture garage doors and service
the dealers as they would want tobe serviced. So it's kind of a

(24:00):
unique story that they went into thebusiness to help their fellow garage door dealers,
right right. You know one ofthe interesting things about garage doors,
and you can shed some light onit, and I talked about how you
know when you're looking at a houseand that garages in the front or even
on the side, the garage dooris a big part of the X tier

(24:22):
of your home and the you know, recouping the money of an investment in
a garage door is probably one ofthe highest of anything else in the house.
Yes, right now, we areseeing some really great trends with the
garage door, especially in our area. The trend in our area in the

(24:45):
Midwest here is that there are onaverage three garage doors on a home.
So you either have a double garagea double car garage door with a single
or you have three singles, whichis a lot of the front of your
house. So it truly curb appeal. What is great right now if you
look at remodeling's costs versus Value study, it is saying that investing and replacing

(25:08):
a garage door gives you a returnon investment of one hundred and two percent,
so you actually get more value inyour house than what you put into
it. So it's a really greatinvestment if you're looking to do a project
that's to really increase your curb appeal. What's also nice is that it generally

(25:29):
happens in one day. It maytake you a while to pick out your
design and make sure that's the colorsyou want and take advantage of the current
trends, but then a professional garagedoor and solo will do it one day.
So it's really nice. You comehome and then you've got a beautiful
garage door. Yeah, it's aone day overall. Well, let's talk
about trends. So I know anumber, you know, a few years

(25:52):
ago we started seeing more glass indoorsand things like that, But what what
are the trends in color and styleright now? We are seeing a lot
and it's continuing. It's been thisway for the last couple of years,
towards dark, dusty colors, andthat's because they really provide a rich color

(26:14):
and a richness to your home.So we're seeing those dark colors, and
then we're seeing truer neutrals, soa neutral color that doesn't trend too much
to a pink or too much toa yellow, but a true neutral.
And that's because it really gives alongevity to the color and the upgrade you're
doing on your home. So we'reseeing those, but to your point,

(26:36):
we are also seeing a lot ofadded glass, which does even if you
don't change the color of your garagedoor, but you add glass to it,
it makes a huge impact on curbappeel, just the look of it
and increases that curb appeel and thatreturn on investments. Sure, I think
it used to be been in thisindustry for a long time. A house

(27:00):
would have a garage door. Youprobably still see some older houses with old
wood garage doors. It wasn't somethingyou really looked at in terms of curb
appeal. But I think we're alsofocused on trends and you know the looks
of our homes that garage doors reallyare. When I say one day renovation,

(27:22):
it truly is. It turns outto be a real show piece to
our home and do people do youfind people doing that more now or is
it just on my garage door broke, I mean dune door. No,
we are seeing yes that you onehundred percent right where people are wanting to
improve the look of their home andthey're really using the garage door. It

(27:45):
used to be the trend that thegarage door would blend with the home,
so you were matching the color tothe exterior of your home, so you're
sighting or you're cladding. But nowthey're really looking at We're seeing the trend
where the garage doors coming closer tothe impact of the front door, and
that's probably due to the fact thatmost of the time they're bull facing the

(28:06):
road. So now you're seeing theywant that garage door to pop and often
match the front door. And ifthey don't match the front door, a
lot of times they'll match accents onthe house. So if you have stone
and brick and then wood accents, they'll match the garage door to that wood
accent. Or it's very popular nowto have black accented windows, and they'll

(28:27):
put a nice carbon we have carbonblack. They'll put a nice black garage
door on to really pop off thefront of the house. So we're really
seeing the garage door come forward asan accent piece on the home. That's
the trend we're seeing in it's doingwell. Yeah, and since it is
such a big part, I'm surepeople listening to this right now are thinking,
yeah, but man if I choosethe wrong color, and I know

(28:49):
has Door has a great feature whereyou can actually try on garage doors,
tell me about that. Yes,we have a new tool and it's kind
of unique. It is a visualizer, which means you can upload onto our
tool called called host, create apicture of your home from the front,
and then add on garage doors fromand try on different colors, try on

(29:12):
wood grains. You can even pickdifferent stamp styles placements of your windows,
so you could try putting them acrossthe top like you traditionally see, or
dropping windows down the side to giveit a little bit more of a modern
feel to your home. So youcan really try on a lot of different
combinations and get the feel of whatlooks best for your home. And you

(29:36):
can even save those projects, becauseif you're like me, you want to
go back and look at it acouple of times before you make your final
choice. But you can do that. But what's great about the tool then
is when you are ready and notbefore you're ready, you can actually send
that project to a hot door agarage door dealer near you and get a

(29:56):
quote on it. So and theycan help you work through any garage codes
that are building codes that are inyour area that you need to comply with.
So they can help you with thetechnical side, but the tool will
really help you with the aesthetics.Yeah, it's a really good way to
not you know, to make sureyou're like what you're doing right. I

(30:18):
guess the other thing in two aboutgarage doors we've talked about the esthetics and
the trends is people are looking forenergy efficiency now and I know the garage
door industry is kind of going througha whole change in terms of how they
communicate the efficiency of a garage door. And Hostdor has been very involved in

(30:38):
that. And tell me a littlebit about the efficiency of garage doors.
I mean they're pretty good now.Yes, our garage shore industry GASMA decided
that we as a whole, asall garage door manufacturers are going to switch
to U factor and that is becausebecause U factor is highly used in building

(31:04):
codes for energy efficiency and thermal efficiencyfor the home, and it allows architects
to use that U factor to improvethe overall building envelope energy efficiency. So
we actually switched from our value, which was a calculated value by each manufacturer,
to a third party, accredited labtested YOU factor, and so now

(31:30):
it is a much more transparent andeasily used by architects or building officials to
see what the energy efficiency is.And it actually measures the heat transfer through
the garage door versus just the insulatingpower of it, which was our value.
So U factor really represents how thegarage door will perform much more authentically

(31:56):
for consumers to make choices on.And yes, you're right, they have
got much more efficient. Yeah,I you know, twenty years ago,
twenty five years ago, the windowreplacement window industry kind of went through that
whole changing our factor to you factorbecause you know, there's different manufacturers kind
of playing games, so this kindof keeps everybody playing the same game.

(32:19):
So that's going to be helpful. That's going to be helpful. And of
course the glass too, I'm surethere's different thickness as a glass that comes
into play too. Of having anenergy efficient door too. Do you have
different thicknesses of glass, Yes,we as for what we've done to make
it easier for the consumer is ourthermally efficient doors kind of increase in thickness,

(32:45):
which the thicker the door, themore thermally efficient they are. But
also the thicker the glass, themore thermally efficient is. So we do
have eight inch opertions that are morefor warmer regions, but like in our
region of the country, you're goingto want to go with at least the
half inch class, which is yes, because it just provides much more thermal

(33:07):
efficiency and it keeps frost from gettingon the inside of the garage door.
Eighth inch glass sauce. So werecommend in the colder areas where you do
have warmth inside your garage door andthen you can have winter outside, that
you go with the more thermally efficienthalf inch glass. Sure, well,

(34:17):
come up with tips and tricks tomake it better. Like he may change
the radius on your garage door tracksystem to bring it higher to the ceiling
and give you a lot more space. So they add a lot of value
to the process. Yeah, that'sgreat and I do encourage people. It's
Hosshaasdoor dot com been in business fora long time. I know that,

(34:42):
like you said, family owned andoperated and plenty of choices. Again,
tell me how you load up thatpicture. Is that a separate website or
I know a lot of people beinterested in that. You can go to
our main website and then if thetool is listed on almost every page on
a website, it's called half create. You just click on it and it

(35:04):

the top of the air. Ido want to thank Tina from host Doors
for joining us. A lot ofgood information on how to build your own
garage door. And they have standardsizes or not standard sizes, but standard
colors. They also custom paint doors. They also have you know, the
different thicknesses, the different energy efficientsthat the U factors you know are are.

(39:30):
The U factor will rate the efficiencyof the door. But I do
want to go back to a caller. We're busy today. Let me give
you the phone number two because thelines are open, but we've been busy.
It's eight hundred eighty two three eighttwo five five. You like to
jump on board. I'd like togo back to the caller we had right
before the half hour, and itwas on septic tanks and on toilet paper

(39:57):
when we had to get to thenews, so kind of and to rush
at the end. But one ofthe things I didn't speak of is if
you do have a septic tank. This particular fellow was what was concerning him
is the toilet paper being attached tothe new screening on the septic tanks.

(40:17):
And you know, he was havinga problem and he had the person come
out and literally they got the paperoff, and how do I get rid
of that paper? After we hungup, I thought, you know,
one of the things if you havea septic tank, and you've had one
for a long time, you're probablyaware of this, and that is that
you know, products are labeled septicsafe. Okay, one of the big

(40:42):
things, the big problems with thethat the plumbing industry's having right now is
with not toilet paper, but thesebaby wipes. And I'm just talking about
it in a house and how theneed for a grinder pump and all that
really, you know, takes careof those issues, but not everybody has

(41:05):
one. But I'm kind of ramblinga little bit, but going back to
the products that are septic safe, there are toilet papers that are actually septic
safe. That all toilet papers quoteare kind of sceptic safe, but some
don't dissolve quite as rapidly as others. A septic safe toilet paper will dissolve

(41:29):
completely in like twenty minutes, Soif that fella is still listening, I
just kind of wanted to pass thatalong. Maybe that's something that we should
kind of retrace and get back totaking a look at and maybe changing the
type of toilet paper that we're using. But you know, again that screen,

(41:54):
if it's not a quickly dissolving toiletpaper, that be the issue.
As far as cleaners, which waswhat he was focused on again, All
toilet papers dissolve eventually, some septicsafe ones dissolve faster. But the aerobic

(42:15):
product that Aerobic sixty seven is aproduct that will dissolve paper or you know,
if there is a blockage, ithelp open that blockage. Also a
product RIDEX, which is a liquid, is pretty pretty good also, we
didn't mention that. And there's alsosome different combinations of products that you can

(42:40):
use which we don't need to getinto. I think your K sixty seven
or your ridex, both of thosewill take care of it. Maybe switching
out to more septic safe toilet paperalso will help. So I did kind
of want to circle back and coverall that because we did get cut short
on a little bit of time andagain, remember, if you have a

(43:00):
septic system, haven't that pumped out? I think they're recommending three to five
years. I mean you can goseven, eight nine years. Really some
people say I never have it pumpedout. But keeping that bacteria in bounce
is certainly the key. You'll knowwhen you have problems. You'll hear the
gurgling in the pipes, You'll hearthe you'll see that the toilet isn't flushing

(43:22):
rapidly, the drains aren't flowing quickly. You know, you'll find green spots
in the yard or water in thefield. Will become a normal thing,
and then it's time to get thatpumped and continue that whole balancing system.
All right again, Our phone numberis eight hundred eight two three eight two

(43:43):
five five. And one of myfavorite products is is the time we talk
about those is the easy Breed ventilationsystem. Airborne particles floating in the air.
We know that triggers allergy and asthma. You can redouce those airborne particles
eighty five percent with an easy breedventilation and it brings in outside air,
