(00:01):
All right, welcome now our numbertwo at home with Gary seven. Kind
of cloudy out there. Temperature, yeah, that's the best way, miss
is scrow. Not too cold, not too warm, so we can get
out and do a few things, maybe that last leaf, raking shore,
maybe cleaning out that gutter one moretime. All right, happy to talk

(00:22):
about your home improvement projects. It'sfive one three fifty five hundred. We'll
take your calls about your home tillone today right here in fifty five krc
DE talk station. Well, soweekend, welcome, you're at home with
Gary Salvin. Thanks for joining me. And well, i'll tell you what

(00:42):
Dice Codings you've heard me talk aboutit. They've got that spread tone counter
spreadstone countertop kit and they also havethe uh Lux rock which make those for
my countertops or would countertops look likegranite? Very good looking stuff. Just
used one and it looked fantastic. And uh now they got the Marble Dream

(01:07):
resurfacing kit. Looks like marble andyou can check that out at Dice Coatings
dot com. All right, we'retalking home improvement and if you'd like to
join us, it's eight hundred eighttwo three eight two five five and Bill
welcome. Hi, Yes, sir, I hope that you have some ideas

(01:30):
for how to keep woodpeckers away frommy house. There's been three downy woodpeckers
that have put holes on the sideof it. It's a a stucco surface.
I've it's been filled once and they'vecreated new holes. Yeah. Yeah,

(01:52):
Well, the best way, Billis to try to alter or change
the environment. Uh, and thethings I'm going to have for you.
You're going to think I'm a littlecrazy, but it works the first way.
If is it close to the upperportion near the gutters or a roof

(02:14):
overhang, or is it right inthe middle, very close to the gutters?
Yes, okay, all right,So there is a there's a product
that you can pick up at hardwarestores and garden centers called Era tape irritaate
ir Yeah, Era tape t ap e. It is strips about it

(02:37):
I t a t e yes.So it is strips of my lar about
an inch and a half wide.Comes in a roll, so you would
you would cut them, you know, maybe two feet long and in the
middle of that tape. There's noadhesive to it. It's just a strip
of my lar. There's holograms inthere, so you literally with a thumbtack

(03:00):
and put them up along the roofin that area where they're pecking the stucco,
and with light, those holograms willpick up and create flashes of light
which will era tape irritate the woodpecker, so they'll go elsewhere. You can

(03:25):
also back in the day, weused to take just blank CDs and a
little fishing line and let those hangdown in that general area same way.
You know, with a CD,it catches the rays of the sun and
creates flashes of light which would disturbthe environment, you know, disturb the

(03:46):
whole environment for the woodpecker, andhe'd find other places. Other people have
tried owls, snakes. I've notdone that. I've had people tell me
it works fine. I've always kindof stuck with thes and the irritape.
Okay, oh this is I'm sorry, my hearing isn't that good. This

(04:08):
is irritape with a P as inPaul at the end. That's correct.
Irritape okay, okay. And anyparticular hardware chain I might find that outmm
No, I would say any bigbox store, small even like some places
where they have bird feed and thingslike that. I've seen it in there.

(04:30):
Even some garden centers have it.Or you can get it on the
line too. All right. Well, that's the best advice I've heard so
far. All right, give ita word very much for your help.
You're quite welcome. Thanks Bill. All right, and you can have Bill's
line. It's eight hundred eight twothree eight two five five, Jim,

(04:53):
welcome, good morning, good sir. Let me take all right. I
got a I had new sidewalks boardwhen the gas company came in and replace
gas lines, and that was amonth ago. I needed to know Holanic
and wait before I seal it.And you stee it in cold weather?

(05:14):
Do you have to wait for warmweather? And most importantly Holando has to
let it age before I take achance. Let the gravel truck will over
that the dumb fresh gravel on mydrive. Umm, well, number one,
you can go ahead and seal itnow. Twenty eight days is the
time span from poor to being ableto seal. You can certainly uh seal

(05:41):
it in the winter, depending onwhat the limitations of the product are.
So on the back of the labelof the sealer that you choose, it'll
talk about limitations, and I'm gonnasay, you know, a good cutoff
period broad broadushing. It would belike, you know, above freezing.

(06:03):
You'd want it above freezing for twentyfour hours and I'd get it down because
the the biggest adversary of concrete, unsealed concrete is rock salt, ice melters,
and in Cleveland you're gonna have plentyof that, So that that salt

(06:25):
and stuff that gets splashed up fromthe street onto that sidewalk creates kind of
a corrosive salty brine solution which penetratesin the concrete. I've seen brand new
concrete, you know, a yearold that was never sealed, and it's
got pit marks all over it.So I'd get it sealed as soon as
I can, as far as agravel truck going over it. The seiler

(06:54):
isn't going to make that concrete anystronger, I'm guessing, and you'd have
to check with whatever provider of theconcrete was. But my guests on a
sidewalk, they probably used a fourthousand psi concrete and it will. You
know, concrete never really quits hardening, so but after again, after twenty

(07:19):
eight days, it's no longer reallywhat they consider green, and you'd be
close to the four thousand psi poundsper square inch, so you'd be good
to use that pretty much right outof the bat. I'll say, any
two other questions, do a powerwashbefore I seal it? And what seilers

(07:40):
do you recommend? I would powerwashor clean Again, there's a lot of
powerwashers. Depending on how strong thatpowerwasher is, there could be some damage
unless it's less than three thousand psifor the powerwasher. But really, if

(08:00):
you use an oxygenated cleaner, I'mgonna give you a website. It's got
wonderful cleaner and it's got a wonderfulsealer and it's Masonry Defender dot com.
You can get it right online. It is. Their cleaner is a very

(08:20):
high grade oxygenated bleach. It's apowder you mix with water, you put
it onto the surface, let's sitabout ten minutes. You can use your
powerwasher then because it will have loosenedyou know, any dirt, and that'll
clean it off where you can justagitate it with a stiff street room and

(08:41):
then hose it off, let itdry, and then come back and use
the ceiler. The neat thing aboutthe website Masonry Defender is they have projects
specific sealers. So they got asidewalk and dryve way sealer, which is
a breathable sealer. In other words, it allows moisture to come up through

(09:05):
the slab and out, and yetit keeps moisture from penetrating down into the
slab. I always say it's kindof like gortex for concrete. So and
they've got probably ten fifteen different sealersfor specific projects. But you'd want the
driveway sidewalk seialer, and you wantthe masonry cleaner, and you'd be good

(09:26):
to go. You're amazing. I'velistened to you for twenty years and I've
loved every program I've listened to.Thanks thanks to you. I appreciate it.

(12:24):
You're at home with Gary Salivan twentyminutes after the top of the hour.
And by the way, we'll havePaul Abrams. He is with Rotor
Router. We'll have him at thebottom of the hour. I don't know
if you've caught the news talking aboutlead pipes. That's been in the news
a lot really for the probably thelast forty years or so. But there's
some mandates now coming down the roadwhere lead pipes are going to need to

(12:48):
be removed, and we'll kind ofgo through, we'll kind of tap into
Paul's brain, see what he knowsabout that and see you know what kind
of ordeal that is? You replacethat with copper? Do you go with
pecks? And anyway, we'll justhave a conversation with Paul and see kind
of see if he can bring usup to speed on the removal of lead

(13:11):
pipes and homes and also the mainsupply lines. All right, that being
said, let's go to Ron Ronwelcome. No, yes, sir,
Yes, the fellow that was onher And you told me about the bird
tape irritape you get right off Amazonthree hundred and fifty feet for nine to

(13:31):
twenty nine. There you go.You got some experience with that. Not
really. I use the CDs likeyou do and the DVDs and they have
worked really great. The ones Idon't like. You can't get much money
for him. Just hang your oldCDs up them. Yeah, yeah,
no, that's true. And youknow, really that's a great tip too,
Ron. And whenever you have problemswith critters, always think about how

(13:56):
you can change the environment, becausethat's really what you're doing. You're nobody,
including us, humans like to besurprised. We don't like things to
irritate us. We like them justthe way it is. If you can
change the environment, make the wildlifework a little harder, and things,
they'll go somewhere else. So yeah, yeah, it works well. I've
used several times, yeap. Mymain question is though, what I called

(14:20):
for it. I got the tipfor the fellow, but anyhow, I
have a marble sink that I hadMay twenty five years ago, and I
installed it and it's the tops ingood shape, it shorter like a boomerang,
is very long, and the bottomof it around the same part.
The marble has got a weighty lookto it, and I know that marbles

(14:46):
salt soft. I'm just wondering,is there's a way to if I smooth
that down with either palmas rock ora fine, real fine grit sandpaper.
Will that be compromised as is gettingstuff stuck to it more? Or there
some way some sealer I could puton an air or ice. Well,
there are marble sealers out there. What I would do, to be honest

(15:09):
with you, is I would probablycontact a fabricator and first, you know,
it doesn't mean you have to usethe fabricator, but I would least
get their input on, you know, how much, what they're going to
do, how they're going to doit. I don't think it's going to
be an easy, do it yourselfproject. I also don't know how big

(15:35):
of the How's the best way tosay how deep the dips are? In
other words, if it's uneven,is it you know a sixteenth? You
know? So it's nothing I say, It's just it's just waviness. And
what I found out from when youpour I had a this is in the
stinct as I've had troubled with drainage, and I would put hot water in

(15:56):
it. And the hot water thehot water, in my opinion, probably
changed the structure of the marble downin there. And it's just got a
way you look to it. Youreally don't see it until the light hits
it. It's nothing really yet serious, but it's just something I thought I
could clean up and maybe make itlook a little better. Yeah. I
could probably answer that question better ifit were probably a choreon versus marble.

(16:21):
Marble is very soft coreon you canliterally sand that down, and marble you
probably can too. And you definitelywant to seal it. But I'm not
so sure how aggressive you can getto it with it. That's the biggest
issue. Okay, Yeah, maybeI'll I'll call somebody and ask them and

(16:45):
they can come out and look atit, and so you get me a
price or whatever they want to.Yeah, I think that's exactly what I
would do. Okay, thank youvery much for your help. All Right,
you're welcome, Thank you, takecare, bye bye. You can
hear you can hear the blower goingon? Yes, I do hear it.
Yeah, yeah, well that's that'sthe way it goes. Sometimes it's

(17:06):
clean up time, right all right, if you'd like to jump on board
again, it's eight hundred eight twothree eight two five five and talking a
little home improvement. As you hearthe blower going on outside, that reminds
me to remind you too, notso much leaf clean up, so worried
about the uh, the landscaping beds, but certainly around the foundations, around

(17:30):
the gutters. Again, wildlife findsits way into your home, usually because
of rotted woods. So you gotthe soffet areas, you got the facier
areas, and if those gutters areclogged and the gutters, you know,
fill up and they start spilling overthe back of the gutter, that back

(17:51):
of that gutter on that facier board, there's a very good chance it's unpainted.
And by unpainted, that means yougot beare wood and the water sitting
and there being absorbed in there, and you're gonna get wood rot. Once
you have wood rot, it's vulnerablefor animals to claw at that, rip
into it, scratch into it,which will take you directly into the attic

(18:15):
area and by I'll tell you whatI In the last probably a week,
I've seen several critter controlled trucks inmy neighborhood. And it can be traced
right back to that particular issue ofjust having the soffets and the corners of
facia boards around the exterior of yourhome be compromised by water, and they're

(18:37):
looking for a place to, youknow, winter out, and don't let
it be your attic. You know, it's not too bad getting that critter
out of the attic, but youknow, the disinfectants and the repair and
all that, it gets pricey andnot always covered by insurance. All right,

(18:57):
Paul Abrams, he's coming up next. We're going to talk about the
new legislation on lead pipes. Aswe continue, You're at home with Gary

we go thirty three minutes after thetop of the Are you're at home with
Gary Salvin? I know, it'sjust a couple of weeks ago. We

(21:57):
had Paul Abrams on and he iswith Roto Ruter, and I had him
back because things are changing once again. Paul Abrams, how are you,
sir? Well, good morning,Gary, I'm fine. I got to
ask you the question, now youready? Day that day after Thanksgiving?

(22:18):
Was it as busy as we thoughtit was? Or did we help some
folks out? I think we helpedsome folks out. You know, for
the twenty years I've been with RotorRuter, it's always been our busiest day
of the year, and although itwas in many parts of the country,
some cities were a little slower thanwe've seen in past years. Super that's

(22:38):
good because you know, there isa lot of little, basic, simple,
little things that we covered a coupleof weeks ago that can make your
life a lot easier. So maybewe did some folks some good. And
that's that's why we do the showa little less over time for a lot
of those service plumbers out there.Yeah, exactly, exactly. Well,

(23:00):
on the news, I guess acouple of days ago we heard and revisited
the whole story of lead pipes andlegislation that's is it been proposed or is
it law now about removal of leadpipes and homes and also supplies. Can
you kind of help us out there. Yeah, Well, it's a proposal

(23:22):
by the Environmental Protection Agency, andthe proposal is that they'll replace all lead
utility service pipes the carry water overthe next ten years, and that's going
to affect, you know, citiesall over the country. We were all
sort of awakened by what happened inFlint, Michigan a few years ago,

(23:45):
right, but Flint wasn't alone. Those lead pipes are underground in most states
and they're carrying you know, ourwater supplies, and any lead exposure is
considered unsafe and that's been proven reallywith even brain development and small children,

(24:07):
and it's not good for adults either, you know, having lead in our
blood and in our system. Sothe legislation that's being proposed is for the
service supply, not necessarily what's inthe homes. Well as you know,
you know Gary, Uh, theybegan this uh, this crusade against lead

(24:30):
and plumbing right back in the nineteeneighties, and they started pushing utilities to
to to uh get let out ofthe system. And then they started realizing
that lead is in the homes. That many of the FAWCET parts that were
installed in homes had had led leadlines in them. Uh. So it

(24:51):
might not have been you know, solid lead pipes from uh you know,
from your meter to your fawcet, but there were lead secon and a lot
of those. So most of thosewere eliminated in the nineteen eighties. There
were some more steps in the nineteennineties to get rid of them. And
you know, I think plumbers solderis something the use of lead solder was

(25:17):
used by plumbers for years, yeah, going back years or more sure,
and that lead and copper rule innineteen ninety one eliminated proposed the elimination of
copper by service plumbers and new constructionplumbers. And today, you know Rotor

(25:38):
Ritter saders with lead free solder whenwe sold at all, most of our
locations have shifted over to those propressed tools to secure copper fittings without any
lead solder or solder at all,or even open plain torches, which can
pose a fire risk. So alot of those things are going away in
the name of safety, right, right, So is there and I'm sure

(26:03):
there is, But I mean,do you have any idea what the statistics?
In other words, is there howmuch? How big is this problem
still? I mean, you're right, I pretty much muchch of my working
life. We've talked about lead, leading paints, leaden pipes, and everything
else. But how big of anissue is it currently? I guess the

(26:26):
supplies are certainly big, But howbig of an issue is it inside our
homes? Now, old homes alot less and modern homes. You know,
there's just you know, over theas we talked aboutsence in the nineteen
eighties nineteen nineties, you don't seeso much of it in that, but
we still see a fair amount oflead in old homes. And you'll find

(26:48):
that many of the homeowners, youknow, continue to have that attitude,
well, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And it's working fine,
but you know that lead is stillout there. And those one hundred
year old homes and eighty year oldhomes, you know, as they have
problems and a service plumber comes inthere and make some repairs. He's likely

(27:14):
to replace some of those sections witheither copper or some sort of a plastic
pipe or packs or something like thatand getting them out of there. So
there's been some attrition. But makeno mistake, there's a lot of lead
piping still out there in American homes. You know, there's a couple big
things in these older homes, andI'm talking one hundred year old homes just

(27:36):
like you were obviously lead piping. The other thing we got into last week
or the week before is nobin tubewiring and nobin tube wiring. Quite honestly,
a lot of insurance companies aren't eveninsuring the homes now, so it's
forcing homeowners if they ever want tosell their house or even get insurance,

(28:00):
to replace NOB and tube wiring. And these are two big issues, right,
I mean, they're big problems, big expenses. Do you have people
or do you anticipate people reaching outthe rotor router now and saying, Hey,
I need an inspection my home.Do I have lead pipes? Can

(28:22):
I change it out? How muchis it going to cost? I mean,
are we that far down the roadon that yet or have we been
doing it we see that. Wedo see that with people who are we
having older homes, they'll call RotaRuter and say, can you get a
bumber over here that with some experienceand lead and give us some alternatives,

(28:47):
give us some options and some ideaof what it would cost to say,
replace these lead service lines with pecks, which would be a pretty easy proposition
depending on where those lines are running. But heex is so flexible and so
it can go places that you don'tnecessarily have to tear walls open and sections

(29:08):
of your home to replace those oldpipes. So I think it's easier than
some people realize. Now. Isit cheap? Of course not. You
know, there's a you're tying upguys, you know, experienced plumbers for
a few days in most cases theseolder, large homes to do that.
But yeah, I think you're right, Gary, that'll probably be something that

(29:33):
we see where homeowners won't be ableto sell those homes if those updates aren't
made because it's so far behind themodern plumbing code. Right. Well,
I even thought when I first heardthat story break, I know it's over
the next ten years, but Ithink it's going to get some people's attention

(29:56):
and it might even get some insurancecompanies attentions. I mean, it is,
this isn't just a story to frightenyou. This is they got all
kinds of data on this. Andyou know, lead is is dangerous,
It gets in your blood systems, and older is a few things. So

(30:18):
you know, nobody's going to wantto buy a home that isn't brought up
to code. And quite honestly, people that are living in these older homes
are going to have second thoughts. How how much is this stuff hurting me?
Now? Well, you're right. You know, we know that long
time exposure to lead, it hasterrible effects on children's growth, their development.

(30:40):
I saw one quote Gary where apediatrician said millions of children have had
their water delivered through a poisonous straw, and she was referred to the fact
that in many American communities, thewater they drink is still running right through
those poisonous lead pipe. Yeah,so how does this affect rotor router where

(31:02):
you are? You know, whenwhen it's talk about changing or replacing service
supplies, who handles that, whodoes that kind of work? Is that
the cities aren't going to do that, right, They're going to contract large
plumbing services, I guess to dothat, right, they will, and
and ones that are you know, used to you know, they have that

(31:25):
sort of scale to to replace milesand miles of service pipes and and that's
not rotor router. We do residentialand commercial and light municipal. But you
know, so maybe in some instancessome of our larger branches might get involved

(31:45):
in some of that, but forthe most part, those are going to
be uh plumbing construction companies contractors ona huge scale, and they'll be tasked
with that. And my understanding isthat President Biden and marked fifteen billion dollars
from removing those lead service lines, and most of that is paid for out

(32:07):
of the infrastructure law that was passedin twenty twenty one. So the good
news is is most of that moneyis already earmarked, right and the raining
costs, of course, will bepaid for by the water utility providers who
turn around to charge you and meand others. But I think it's money
well spent. You know, there'sa lot of waste in government, there's

(32:28):
no doubt about that. But boy, you know, this is one where
we're actually doing something that benefits alot of people, right right, And
you know, once it's taken careof from the supply line, and then
we have to look at our ownhomes and our own responsibilities. The big
buzzword all the time in the lastten years has been affordable housing. As

(32:52):
housing stock gets older in our cities, they have these problems with lead pipes,
nob and tube wiring, and butthose changes have to be made in
the houses too. Are you stillgot kind of the same problem, You're

(33:13):
right, you know they you know, there's the big straw and then they're
the smaller straws, right right. That lead and copper rule you know,
had plumbers, you know, givingup the solder. We at the same
time it mandated that plumbing fixtures likefaucets and valves could no longer be manufactured
or repaired with any lead components. But make no mistake, those are out

(33:37):
there and we see them daily.Yeah. Yeah, Well, and so
many people that have houses and haveolder homes, they may not be aware.
I mean, I know it's beenin the news, I know it's
been changing. You and I havewatched the transition take place for the last
twenty thirty years, and but thereare homeowners that really don't, so I

(34:00):
really wanted to get you on andI really appreciate you stopping buy and having
this conversation. If people will hearthis in the news and their concern,
can they reach out the rotor routerwhere you would have a plumber just kind
of inspect and kind of give thema clue of what's going on in their
house or whether it's an all clear. I mean, is that something you

(34:21):
folks would do? It is,yeah, and especially you know I would.
I don't want to panic anyone. If your home was built, you
know, in the nineteen eighties orafter, you have very low risk,
right, and in the nineteen seventiesof some risk. But if you're going
back to a home that was producedbefore, say the nineteen seventies, and
yeah, especially in those one hundredyear old homes, but the forties and

(34:44):
thirties, there's quite a bit oflead in those. So those would be
the people that would think about it. And if you have lead, you
know that it's in your public supply. For instance, I think it's Rhode
Island, Michigan. There's a fewstates that have a lot more lead and
others, but we all have it, right, But there's things you can
do. You can get those, you know, a whole house water filtration

(35:07):
system. They're not all created equal, but a lot of them do a
great job of either eliminating lead orreducing it to such trace amounts that you
know you're out of the woods interms of big danger, and I think
you know those are. That's athat's a worthwhile investment. If you are

(35:27):
in an area that has lead servicepipes in the ground that lead to all
the neighborhoods in your town, oryou live in an older home, you
can filter out a lot of that. It's called a band aid, it's
a it's a it's a protection system. But you know, we believe in
it, and many Rotor Ritter branchesare really pushing into that. We've done
a lot of that over the lastfew years, and we see that as

(35:52):
it's a big part of our futureis water quality. Right, you know,
there's not just lead, but you'vegot these for chemicals and things like
that, so sure, yeah, there's not just Rotor Router. There are
many companies out there that offer greatfiltration systems for your home, and that's
a good way to get out infront of this problem. But there's no

(36:13):
substitute for just replacing the dog onlead right out there. Homes. Well,
I agree, and I'm sure youdo the water testing in the homes
and you can check on how muchyou know, chlorines in the water,
which is terrible for some of ourtoilet parts, and how much leads in
the water and find out exactly what'sin there. You folks do that,

(36:34):
and then people can you know, begin to start learning, you know,
a little bit about their water quality. Yeah, they can. And you
know, if you have any questionsor concerns, I mean, I would
say you can definitely go to rotoruaderdot com. Enter your zip code and
you'll see what local services are offeredby that rotor uder, Okay, and

(36:54):
then look for water software infiltration systemoptions, and then go to the EPA
dot gobsite and then type in leadpipes and you'll see good government information that
is reliable, not necessarily a salespitchka. You know this is and I
think people need to educate themselves sothey don't panic, but they understand the

(37:17):
risk. Right, just start thelearning curve. Paul, thank you so
much for your time today. Ireally really appreciate it. Always a pleasure.

and we got a couple big thingsgoing in those hundred year old homes.

(40:44):

Also a couple of callers calling likeI just heard something Gary talking about.
It's on woodpeckers again, the Fellowshaving troubles with woodpeckers banging into his stucco

(41:54):
and creating holes there. Again.Changing the environment, that's what we're talking
about doing. There's a product outthere called irratape has a hologram in it
creates flashes of lights which kind ofchanges the environment. You can also hang
CDs up there. I've seen peopleeven put aluminum foil strips. You can

(42:16):
literally put them up with some thumbtacksagain and creates flashes of light. They're
light and again, wildlife doesn't liketo be disturbed on that type of thing,
so that might be something you wantto take a look at. So
that's what we were talking about onthat, and different types of woodpeckers drum

(42:38):
on different ones. I had awoodpecker one time. The thing actually drummed
on a chimney cap. It wouldsit on the top of the chimney and
drum on the metal cap. Andthey drum for many reasons. They can
look for insects, they can lookfor a mate, So it depends the
time of year that they're actually drummingon on that but annoying it is,

(43:01):
and you want them out of yourenvironment and he can go elsewhere, she
can go elsewhere, all right. So I wanted to just pass that along
before the break, and then wegot Nicky and Mike and if you'd like
to join us too, so Iwill let you know about a product tear
