improvement. We got to get going. We'll get behind otherwise. It's eight
hundred eight two three eight two fivefive. Grab a line. We've got
a couple of lines open and nicky. Welcome, Hi Gary, thanks for

(01:03):
having me. You're quite welcome. My question is we're my sister and I
are getting really ready to sell ourparents home, and my mother had left
a steel scouring pad of some kindon seeing the steel sink, and we
didn't notice it for a long time. And now that area is rusted.

(01:23):
What can I use to get thatrust off of the sink? Yeah,
so the rust is really a ruststain from the you know, this steel
pad, so it's right on thesurface of the stainless steel. Do you
got any Barkeeper's Friend at your home? No? I don't, but that's
okay to know. Barkeeper's Friend isan oxolic acid. It's just a powder.

(01:47):
It's almost like a scouring powder.I would recommend trying that. You're
probably gonna have to use a littleelbow grease and maybe do it a couple
of times, but should take thatrust right off the surface. There's a
couple products that'll do it. Onewould be Barkeeper's Friend. There's also one
that's really good at RUSS called zudZud. You can get that at the

(02:09):
grocery store. You can get itto the hardware store. It's probably gonna
do a little bit better job thanthe Barkeeper's Friend. But either one of
those is what you'd want to usein a little elbow grease and it's just
on the surface. Can't penetrate thisstainless steel, so you should be good
to go. Okay, well, thank you so much. You do the

(02:32):
same. Thanks Nikky calling anytime.Appreciate it. All right, let's go
to Mike. Mike, welcome,Thank you, Gary. How are you,
yes, sir? Fine? Thanksgood. My question is about squeaky
floors in our home. Twelve yearsago, when we bought the home,
we noticed that every floor in everyroom, in the floor, the floors
are squeaky. And the villager saidit was from the nails of the carpeting

(02:55):
and that when you know, ifand when we changed the carpeting, that
we could screw them carpeting in orsomething and that would take care of the
squeaky floors. And sure enough, there are nails down in the basement that
they say, this's a backing upto the nails. Does that sound right?
Yeah? Yeah. In fact, when we start off today's show,
I was talking about home humidity andhow it changes, you know, weather

(03:16):
in the summer and dryer in thewinter. This time of year is if
you hadn't had squeaks before, youwould probably notice them in the next three
months because things dry out. Thewood dries out, the floors get a
little more bounce to it. Ifit's just a nail, that sub floor
can ride on that nail just likea piston. And sometimes, you know

(03:39):
where we have to when we changethe carpeting, we're gonna have to change
the sub floor to then No,no, no, because what you what
you'll do. I just had thisdone that long ago. So my house
is twenty five years old. Theyreplaced the carpet in the family room,
and to be honest with you,I didn't even know the family room carpet
floor squeaked. I never heard it. I heard one place in the fall,

(04:00):
and a guy says to me,goes like, you know, you
got a little bounce in this subfloor. I'm gonna renew it, nail
it, and screw it in acouple areas. That okay. I went,
yeah, sure, that's awesome.I'm glad he suggested that. Good
service. But yeah, they'll doa couple of things. So when they

(04:20):
put that sub floor down there buildingthat house, they would usually use like
an adhesive, like a construction adhesive, and then they would nail that sub
floor into the joye. Well, depending on you know, who was doing
the nailing, they might have theymight have hit the joyce, they may

(04:41):
have missed a lot of joyce. They may have glued it, they may
not have glued it. And overtime, you know, it needs a
little little help. So again they'llbe able to tell just by walking out
once that carpets up and they canjust renail areas or some times I've even
seen people run screws in through thesubfloor into the joys. But if they

(05:06):
use the proper nail where there's ringshanks, you know it's not a smooth
nail, you'll be fine. You'llbe fine. Hey, great, Well,
thank you Gary, have a goodweekend. All right, you do
the same, Thanks Mike, takecare bye bye. All right. Lines
are wide open. Our number iseight hundred eight two three eight two five

(05:27):
five. You've been trying to getthrough. Do it now eight hundred eight
two three eight two five five youand me throughout this hour, so plenty
of time, we get plenty ofquestions answered. Also, if you're in
the process of changing out carpets,I give you another little tip here,
you know, checking the subfloor, having you know any loose areas renailed.

(05:49):
That's a great idea. And youknow, not everybody does that, not
you know people that are installed carbon. Not everybody's going to take that time
consideration to do that, and letyou know there's an issue. They need
to charge you a little bit moremoney for it, so be it.
I mean it's a you know howoften you change carpet, not very often,

(06:10):
right, So if somebody's telling youthat and you can here, she
shows you that, and you canwalk on, you can usually feel that
bounce, get it done. That'sthe time to do it. Also,
between the subfloor and the base board. You know, you pull up the
carpet, you got a tax stripthere, and you got a gap between
the subfloor and the baseboard. Alot of times and you can pay attention

(06:38):
when they're taking the carpet up.Right where that carpet butts the wall will
be a black film on that carpetbecause your house is actually breathing through that
gap at the base of the baseboardand your carpet is literally functioning as a
filter and those carpet fire are catchingdirt in you. And in fact,

(07:03):
if they're putting that carpet in ona cold day, and you put your
hand down there. Unless you havelike pumped in foam insulation, you'll feel
breeze. And when you're replacing thatcarpet, just get some acrylic latex calking
or acrylic silkonose cocking and put abead of calking between the subfloor and the

(07:27):
bottom of that base board. Man, what a difference that'll make in terms
of energy efficiency, eliminating drafts. So a little calking down at that base
and then the carpet go right over, you'll never see it. That's the
time to do it. And alsocheck those outlets on outside walls. There's

(07:47):
little foam pads that can go inthere. Again, eliminating drafts. It's
a great way to save energy dollars. All right, let's go to Donna.
Donna, welcome, Hi there,Yes hi, I got a question
for you. It's about a leakyfaucet in my daughter's bathroom. It's just

(08:09):
a pulled side that's leaking, soit just kind of drips out of the
faucet, okay, And so Iturned off the valve and I just I'm
not sure how to fix that.Yeah, So it depends. I mean,
they went through changes in faucets youtwenty years ago. How old do
you think that faucet is? Yougot any idea it could possibly be that

(08:33):
old. Okay, So when youshut off the water down at the bottom,
that's step one. Step two isto take the handle off the faucet
and right where the sea is atthe top, that cat may pop off,
which will expose a screw. Andthen you take that screw off and

(08:58):
that handle should pull off. Andit's going to depend whether it is a
plastic stem or a brass stem. And the stem is when you turn the
water on, you kind of unscrewthis stem, which allows the water to
flow up through the pipe, throughanother pipe, through the faucet and out

(09:20):
the spout, and there's a washer. If it's brass, there's a washer
at the end of that stem.If it's plastic, the stem is inside
the housing of the faucet. Itsounds more complicated than it is. It's
easy. It's an easy fix.So you pull the stem. There'll be

(09:43):
two nuts that are holding the steminto the housing of the faucet. You'll
take those off and then you'll backthat stem out all the way or it'll
just pull out. The plastic onesusually just pull out and again, if
it's a brass one, it'll unscrewout and take that to the hardware store.

(10:05):
Get the appropriate size fawcet washer andjust go ahead and replace. It's
just a little rubber washer at thebottom of it. If it's plastic,
you'll twist about a quarter turn andpull it out, and you'll look straight
down in the housing of that faucetand there'll be a little black ramt which

(10:26):
you can pull out with a littleneedle nosed pliers. There's only two sizes.
Most of them are packaged both typesin a little package. Go to
the hardware store, put that littlegrommet back in, put the stems back
in, and you should be golden. Great. All right, well I
wrote that down, so I appreciatethat so much. Thank you very much.
You bet you take care, byebye. All right. Every time

(10:50):
I hear somebody tell me that story, I always think of my buddy.
One day, how do I replacethat faucet? And I told them the
same thing that I just told her. Next time I saw him, I
said, did you get that fixed? And goes yeah, But I screwed
it up. I said, howdid you screw it up? He says,
well, I got the cold sizefixed, and when I put it

(11:11):
all back together and I turned thewater on, I realized it was the
hot side that leaked also, soI took the handle off. The only
problem is I had turned the wateroff on the cold side, but I
never turned the water off on thehot side. Water sprayed up, hit
the hot light bulbs, light bulbsbroke, and holy cow, it's supposed

(11:33):
to be simple, but sometimes it'snot all right. Our numbers eight hundred

I know it's good for you.Yeah, that's true. It's always better

(14:33):
to be busy than not busy. And I'm serious. Let's go to Todd
Todd Welcome, Hey, Gary, how are you doing, Yes, sir,
fine, Thanks? Hey, gota question two parts reference concrete.
I've got a spot on our porch. It's about it's a rough spot,
about the size of a quarter uhhuh or so. And I'm not sure

(14:56):
nothing sat there and rusted on it. I mean it's right the center of
the step area and it's almost tome it's almost like a rock or something's
rusted there. But I'm not sure. What I'm looking for is something maybe
that would get it off, youknow, cleaned up. Yeah. Well,
there there are products out there thatyou know we'll remove rust. One

(15:20):
of them is called iron out.Just just by the mere fact of how
you described it, I'm a littleconcerned that you know this is gonna take
care of it. Iron out isa wonderful product. So I'll tell you
how to use it, and thenI'll tell you why they're concerned. It
comes in either crystal form or liquidform. I'll usually use the crystal and

(15:45):
you get a little bowl. Youdon't need a bucket to a little bowl
warm water. Put the crystal inthere. Let us sit for a little
bit, and then take a paintbrushand literally just sit down next to the
spot with your paint brush and justkeep basting that spot. Okay, and
you might have to just you know, dip and brush over it fifty times,

(16:06):
but you'll see it just start lighteningup. It dissolves iron oxide,
so it's dissolving and it's not goingto bleach out the concrete. It's going
to strictly attack that iron oxide therust and lighten it and eventually remove it.
Now, inside steps is sometimes arebar, which is a piece of

(16:26):
metal which could be rusting up throughthe concrete, which you'll lighten it,
but you're not going to get ridof it. Okay, Okay. When
you talk about a rock, thereare rocks with high iron content that do
rust. I was in Alaska onetime and all the rocks along the river

(16:48):
banks were all rusted because they hadsuch a high iron content. Sure,
yeah, that's almost what it seemslike it is, because it's just about
the size of a corner, maybejust a little bit larger. That was
the day I learned that rocks canrust. Okay, well yeah, really,
I'll try that iron aw Second questionis I want to pressure wash the

(17:12):
you know, the porch steps andthe walkway up to the forge. Is
there any type of ceilant or waterproofingafterwards? Once I drive out? Sure?
And this is this is all concrete? Correct? Yes, sir,
yeah there is. There's there's allkinds. What you want is you want

(17:33):
a breatheable concrete ceilant. I'll giveyou a couple of them. One of
the websites I talked about is onecalled masonrydefender dot com. They have a
driveway and sidewalk siler. It's aslock sane based seiler. It once you

(17:55):
put it on, you can't eventell anything's on it. It minimizes water
penetration from the top and it allowswater to escape from underneath. That's one
seiler. I'd recommend. The otherone if you want to run up to
the hardware store. It's a quickcreek product called cure Seal. Cure Seal

(18:17):
is a an acrylic. It's awater base, so it's breathable also,
and it has just a slightest satKney look kind of really makes the concrete
pop a little bit. But it'scalled cure seal and that would be one
i'd recommend. Yeah, it's notslickery, no no, no, no,

(18:40):
uh. This is almost just likea satin. There. There's no
sheen, there's no gloss to itor no build up. Really, it's
just creates a little bit of asheene. Okay, all right, stay
busy. Thanks, all right,we'll take a little break. We come
back. We got Dale and Margaretand Kevin and talk. Grab a line.

are at home with Gary Salvan.Hey, my friend Alan wrote me an
email and very timely, and Ireally want to address what he addressed to

(21:55):
me because he's right, we kindof acknowledge, but we didn't really talk
about it. So I just whenwe had Paul on from Rotor Ruter,
we were talking about the new EPAmandating getting rid of rid of lead supply
lines, et cetera, et cetera. And that's really what I wanted to
get was his take on that asa public relations person of Rota Ruter.

(22:22):
And he was talking, he goes, listen, I got an old house,
hunter year old house in Cleveland, and they get their water from the
Cleveland Water supply and has lead leadpipes and had it tested and everything,
and there's no lead in the pipesbecause the EPA mandates Cleveland Water to monitor

(22:45):
homes. And he volunteered to bea test site and they drew samples from
the first flow in the morning andthe water had been in the pipes overnight
and no detectable lead because Cleveland Wateradds a chemical to the water that forms
it coating on the pipes that protectsthe water from the lead. Good.
That's great that we didn't talk aboutthat, But what we did talk about

(23:08):
was the next sentence. If youremember Paul from Rote Ruter mentioned. This
all grew out of the whole Flint, Michigan issue that happened I don't know,
eight years ago, not long ago, maybe five years ago. In
Flint, Michigan, they switched thewater supply to an acid water and I
remember reading about it, and itdissolved the lead and it basically bankrupt the

(23:36):
city. And you know, itwas and it left a lot of people
very vulnerable. And he says, not going to happen in Cleveland. But
well, we don't know. Youknow, my basis of having this was
it's proposed legislation. So it createsconversation. That's number one. Number two

(23:56):
is heavy water tested. I've hadmind tested. You've heard me tell people
have your water tested not only forhardness, but the chemicals that are in
it. You know, one ofthe really big problems, and certainly lead
is dangerous. This fellas is youknow, we can spend billions of dollars
replacing water pipes, but a lotof the children in the inner city that

(24:21):
are damaged from this is actually bylead, but lead from paint. And
he goes, why don't you havea painter on and we have We've talked
about lead a lot there's a bigyou know law that was passed again probably
ten years ago, like if youhave windows replaced in your house is before
the nineteen seventy seven, the differentprecautions they need to take, so having

(24:45):
yes in older homes, there arethings that you need to be mindful of.
Lead in paint, nob and tubewiring, lead in pipes. You
just get it tested, is allI'm saying. If you're concerned, get
it tested. All right, let'sgo to Dale Dale Welcome, Thank you,
thank you for taking my call.Gary, You're welcome. Years ago,

(25:08):
you were talking on your program abouta product developed by some European man
for furnish or furnished rather that doesn'trequire things to be refinished, if it's
just a few minor scratches and things. Would you happen to recall with that?

(25:29):
Well, the name of the productis called Milsick, and it was
invented by a Hungarian cabinet maker. But I really want to know what you're
trained to do. Tell me aboutyour problem. Well, I'll let you
know if that's going to work.I have purchased a sideboard and table and
chairs and they're old there, they'reantiques, and i'd like to keep that

(25:55):
beatina as much as I can without. I mean to have everything just refinished.
Okay. So I'm gonna tell youabout two products and then I'm gonna
let you decide which one you thinkyou need. The product Millsek is.
What it does is it removes wax, old wax and grime, which makes

(26:18):
wood very dull. And it stripsold wax off and and grime off a
wood surface and rejuvenates the woods. So it'll enhance the grain, it'll enhance
the patina because it's removing the dullgunk that's on the surface of the wood

(26:41):
table. Okay. So that's onethat's called Millsek. That's the one that
a European cabinet maker invented one hundredand ten years ago. I'm sorry,
did you say that M I LNo, it's m I L S E

(27:02):
k oh. Okay. So that'sone. You can get it online.
You can also get it at ahardware stores, Okay. And then I
the other product is called restore aFinish. The store finishes a company.
It's made by Howard Products. It'sout of California. And I've talked about

(27:29):
this a lot also, but it'sprobably been twenty twenty five years ago,
since I talked about it a lot. It's for a wood piece of furniture
that maybe the finish is tired, not so much, not as worried about,
not worried about dart and grime, but it's just boringly dull. Maybe

(27:56):
the finish has even got some wrinklesor what called crazing in the finish.
Maybe there are some scratches in thefinish. And the restore a finish comes
in probably eight different colors, sothe usual, the walnut, the golden
note, mahogany, cherry. Soit is tinted and it is applied by

(28:21):
a rag and it's kind of hidingthe scratches and kind of melting the finish
a little bit. If it's crazed. I mean, it's not gonna perform
a miracle here, but it's goingto cover up a couple of evils and
add pigment to it to give ita little bit pop. Okay, So

(28:48):
both sound good. That this lastone sounds great. Yeah, the last
one sounds like it's more the oneyou're looking for. I agree, yes,
yes, I thank you. I'mgoing to get some today, all
right, Very good. Thanks takecare dal all right, restore finish.
I've used that on an old bedroomset, probably from the seventies. It

(29:10):
was a soft pine, kind ofearly American look, and man it had
dings, dense scratches, it itall kinds of things. It did a
you know, it didn't look likea new piece of furniture, but it
looked pretty dog on good. Hey, if you'd like to join us too,
So it's eight hundred eighty two threeeight two five five, got lines
open, Todd welcome, Thanks Garry. I've got two questions on concrete.

(29:37):
One. I just built a newhouse two years ago and they poured my
front porch and right outside of thefront porch step is water stands. And
I don't know if there's a eurythingeor if there's anything that can level level
that off without cracking or anything. All right, So explain to me how

(30:00):
this is. This is out Sothere's a landing out the door, yes,
and then there's a steep one.No. No, it's flat when
you go out the door, okay. And the porch is like twenty by
t and eight by twenty. Butright out the front door is where the
water stands. Okay, okay,so you got a little dip, yes,

(30:23):
okay, So a good way todo that is really I mean,
you can start with just taking atwo by four and landing across, and
you'll see the gap underneath the twoby four and you'll be able to tell
about how much you need to buildthat up. And what do you think
it is? A quarter of aninch? Maybe you know, I haven't.

(30:45):
Somebody used to tell me. Usethe nickel theory or a quarter theory
and lay that down. And ifit's above that, it's it's so I
don't know, Gary, I answerthat, all right. So there's a
product. But there's going to bea drawback here too when I recommend it.
So it's not gonna match. Okay, it's gonna be gray in color,

(31:07):
but it's not gonna match the colorof the concrete. So that's number
one. I'm just giving you thenegatives first, and I'll tell you how
to do it. The other thingis you can apply this up to three
aces of an inch thick, whichis pretty thick. I'm gonna guess you
don't have anything that's that deep.Okay, right, all right, So

(31:30):
that's the So if you make thispatch and it doesn't match, you can
have a big bullseye there. Sothere might be another step after that.
So the product I'm thinking about, there's two of them. One of them's
maybe ten bucks. The other onemight be like fifty bucks. One of
them is vinyl concrete patcher. Youcan find that at most any hardware store.

(31:56):
It's made by Quickcrete. You willclean the surface. You'll get as
clean as you can, hopefully witha pressure wash or something along those lines.
It's a powder you mix with waterand mix it in a bucket.
Let's sit for about three to fiveminutes and apply it with a trial,
and then you can do your twoby four tests or your nickel test or

(32:21):
whatever to see that. If youknow you want it a little bit sloped
towards the front of the steps soit drains off, you can do just
that area. I don't think you'regoing to want to do the whole landing.
If you do want to do thewhole landing, there's one called quick
Crete makes a resurfacer, so youwould make that patch, and then there's

(32:45):
a special mixture that you can makeit where it would flow like a driveway
asphalt sealer, so it's thicker andyou can make the whole thing look the
same color. Okay, So it'svinyl concrete patcher. That's the first one.
The other one is it's non cementatious, so it's an acrylic resin filler.

(33:13):
That's the one that's more expensive. It's one you're gonna have to get
online. And it's called rock Fix. Rock Fix. It's by Dice Coatings,
it's pre mixed, it's ready touse. No guarantees it's gonna match
either, but you simply trial thison. It's a little bit more longer

(33:37):
lasting, but you know it's probablya little easier to use and more expensive.
So it's called it doesn't crack orchap or it's got a longevity somewhat
of longevity to that one's probably gotmore longevity. I mean that that vinyl

(33:59):
concrete patch probably last you five years. The rock Fix will probably give you
ten. Just remember their repair products, so you know they're they're never made
to repair, but they're never goingto be as good as that first old
slab of concrete, right right,And I understand that I do so either

(34:20):
one of those, and there's differentthings you can do too. Even with
the rock Fix, you could youknow, invest a little more money and
just do the whole use it asa filler, and use it as a
resurface, and resurface that whole step. What what I want you to do
is or that whole landing area.Go to their website. It's DICEE d

(34:43):
A I C H. DICEE Coatingsdot com. Man he's got all kinds
of videos on there, very informative. You'll see exactly what it's all about.
And but either way, both ofthem will get rid of your puddle.
And that's the first step. Okay, okay. My second question is,

(35:04):
and I think you probably answered that, I've got a garage door in
my shop that I've bring tractors in. But it's a bigger it's across the
bottom of the garage door. It'sprobably an inch or two inches deep going
across there. So this product, these products would probably work there as well,
just to kind of seal the airfrom going in and out. They

(35:27):
would. And now remember there's athree ace thickness limitation. You could probably
get a half inch out of it, but no more than that. But
what you can do if it's allthe way across there is a threshold self
stick threshold that can be put onthe floor of the garage which is adjustable,
and then the garage door can seton that threshold and you kind of

(35:51):
take the whole concrete out of play, and you might just google garage floor
threshold. A lot of your doorcompanies will also install those, or again
using that filler. Probably use twocoats and see where you're at. At
that point, we'll continue at Homewith Gary Sullivan. Help for your home

All right, eight minutes before thetop of the air. By the

Our number is eight hundred eight twothree eight two five five. Go ahead
and grab that line. Let's goto Scott Scott. Welcome, Hey Gary,
I have a I have a bathroomthat I'm remodeling. It's a second

(39:10):
floor, and when I took thetoilet off, I realized that the flange
had been leaking a little bit.And the house was built in nineteen ninety
two, so that that ring that'sthere was metaled on the flange. So
I ended up cutting the top ofthat off. And my question is,

(39:30):
I've been looking for like after marketflanges, and there's some that go inside
the existing pipe. And then theother option I guess for me is to
I've looked online, is taking likea saws ofd trying to cut the I

(39:51):
guess the lip of that original flangoff. But I'm a little scared to
do that, and I'm trying tofigure out which the best what would be
the best way to Yeah, I'mgonna have you. Did you when you
went to the hardware store? Wereyou looking at flanges? Yeah? I
did. I've I even talked tosomebody uh there, and I wasn't really

(40:14):
confident in the advice that they gavebecause this the flange they sold me has
like a gasket and it kind ofsqueezed down into the existing pipe. But
it's not I don't know if that'sreally a secure way because it is on
the second floor. So do youknow what brand that was? The existing

(40:37):
one? I do not know.Well, no, the one they sold
you or tried to sell you.Oh yeah, it's a it's an oat
Oatly Oatly. So what I wantyou to do? And it's been a
while, maybe like five years sinceI used one, I can't really remember
how that attachment process takes place. It's called perfect Sea. I'm also going

(41:00):
to give you a website. There'sprobably a video on installation. Since I
can't see what your arrangement is onyour flange, I don't know if we
really need to cut that. Sothis would be a seal that would be
attached to something that could then goon the pipe or whatever existing flange we

(41:24):
have, and it's adjustable in height. They originated I think fluid Master makes
one now totally makes one something similarbut different. And the name of that
website or the manufacturer is Danko andI think it's da Nco dot com Danco

(41:47):
dot com And put in perfect Seal, okay, and see if that's going
to help you or not. Asfar as the type that goes into the
pipe, I don't see a problemwith that, to be honest with you,
because really most of your or allof your seal, quite honestly is

(42:14):
is at the top of that flange. In other words, it fitting in
there is fine as long as thingsare level, when the height is correct,
whereas with that perfect seal that canbe adjusted. Okay, Yeah,
the only thing that I was reallyconcerned about is is that pipe. I

(42:35):
don't know how secure it is underthe subfloor. Yeah, so once once
I if I did use the onethat that fits inside the existing pipe,
I don't know other than that thatgasket that's inside there, that would be
really the only thing that would beholding it to that existing pipe under the

(42:57):
sub floor, right right. ButI again, since that water is going
from the toilet into that pipe withthat, I don't think that would be
a problem. Just do me afavor, because we're an run out of
time. Go to that website.Check out that video. See if that's
different than the Oatly one. Butyou know, otherwise you're gonna end up
cutting that flange off, you mayget into that pipe, you're gonna end

(43:20):
up with a bigger project. Sookay, do that. Take a look
at that video. You got youreyes on the flange and see see what
you think about that, and giveme a call back if you'd like.
All right, appreciate it. We'lltake a break. When we come back,
