It's eight hundred eight two three eighttwo five five. That's eight hundred

(01:26):
eighty two three eight two five fiveand grab a line, happy to chat
about what's on your mind around yourhome. You know an interesting thing yesterday.
I find it interesting. Maybe youdon't, but you know, you
never know what you're gonna get inthe show. It's obviously about your home.
It's about repair. It's about doingsome maintenance work, how to fix

(01:49):
things. That's what we do everyweekend, both Saturday and Sunday. And
here we are this time of year. You never really know what your can
really expect. And we got allthese questions on concrete repair, which is
you know, there's a lot ofparts of the country right now that a
little chili and in some cases evena little snow. Other places nice and

(02:12):
warm, but usually not a lotof questions on concrete repair. This time
of year, we had a tonof them, and kind of as I
was getting ready for the show today, kind of started thinking, well,
you know, maybe I'm missing outon something. I try to get us
a couple months before the end ofthe season as on something. Oh yeah,

(02:36):
it happens, man, I'm shocked. I don't know what to say.
Anyway. I started thinking, like, you know, we talk about
concrete repair all summer long, wetalk about getting the concrete ready for winter.
Huh, you say, well, there really are things you need to
do. And I start doing thatlike in September October, and then kind
of turned spickt off, and allof a sudden, yesterday we started getting
all these calls and I thought, well, you know, it is still

(03:00):
decently warm in a lot of partsof the country. Maybe we ought to
just go visit that. So Iwill do just that going into wintertime.
If it has been a while wherethose driveways and sidewalks in especially the aprons
of driveways that are up against thestreet, maybe they haven't been sealed for

(03:22):
a number of years. And ifyou live in an area, we get
a lot of ice and snow androad salt used to melt that ice and
snow, and of course the trucksgo up, and the cars go up,
and your car pulls into the garageand you dump all those clumps of
snow and ice that are laden withsalt right on that apron of that driveway.

(03:46):
And over time, of course,it melts the snow in the ice,
and it warms up in the sun, and that salty brine solution works
its way in the concrete and itis corrosive. And who's I talk about?
But who really does that? Whogoes out and sweeps all the residue
off or even takes a hose andjust blast that off in the middle of

(04:08):
winter. Not many of us,Not many of us. So it continues
to be across material right on theconcrete. And that's when you get the
spawling, the little pop marks offthe surface of the concrete and can take
brand new concrete and make it looklike a disaster with any year if it's
not properly maintained. And it canbe properly maintained this time of year,

(04:31):
as long as it's above freezing andyou don't have snow on the ground.
Sure, and we got those callsyesterday. That's why I bring it up
today. Like I said, maybeI'm missing out on something. I turned
that spick it off a little tooearly. So as long as it's a
buff freezing. What you want isyou want a masonry sealer or a concrete

(04:51):
seiler that's breathable. The Quick Creekmakes one called Cure Seal gets a nice
little satin machine to it. There'sa masonary Defender brand. It's called Sidewalking
driveway sealer. It's a socks andbath. It's breatheable, called cortex or
gortex cortex Gortex for concrete. Itminimizes the water penetration of the concrete and

(05:17):
yet the moisture from these soils inbeneath that slab a concrete, it allows
it to exhaust through the concrete.I did not get that water trapped in
that concrete. So you minimize thatsalt and corrosive brainy solution from getting into

(05:38):
that concrete and staying in there. And then every time it drizzles a little
bit or heavy fog and moisture,it reactivates it. No, because you've
sealed the capillaries of that concrete,so put it on your list. It's
easy to do clean the surface ifyou've got a powerwasher, or you can

(05:58):
use a oxygenate bleach and you canuse a tanks prayer to apply it.
You don't want it to puddle, you can backbrush it. But uh,
put that on your list. Maybethere's you know, if you haven't done
it for a while, it canliterally save you. You know. I'm
not go I call it a disaster, but uh provably an unmaintained appearance of

(06:24):
that driveway when it begins to spall, and also in early demise to that
concrete surface. So I want topass that along, all right. Our
phone numbers eight hundred eight two threeeight two five point five. Jay,
Welcome, Hey, good morning Gary. How are you. I'm fine,
Good morning, Good, it's good. Hey. I'm gonna take the interior

(06:47):
frames off around my windows, uhto repay them, strip them down and
repay them to an older house. And while I'm doing that, I was
going to fill in that gap betweenthe window and the building itself with that
spray foam. My question is shouldI or should I not spray the bottom

(07:10):
Like with a door frame, You'renot supposed to fill in the Yeah,
yeah, thinking on this you canand make sure I got the right thing.
So this is from the frame ofthe window to where it is attached
or adhere to the wall. There'sa little open pocket the gap there.

(07:30):
Yeah. How big is that gap? Just that curiousity? Oh big enough
that you can put your little fingerin all the way around? Yeah?
Okay? And is it hollow beckin there for a while? It is.
So this is a brick house, and it was built in the sixties,
and there's a pretty good sized gapbetween the window itself and that.

(07:50):
Yeah. I just I can feelwhen it gets really cold, cold radiating
for MANA sure I have dual pay, dual paying notice, all right,
it seems to do okay, Sono problem doing the bottom. Yeah,
no problem doing the bottom. Andin fact, why I was asking that
question, I was kind of thinking, maybe we don't even need to use
the phone, Maybe we could justuse a calking. But as you describe

(08:13):
it, foam is the right thingto use. Make sure you use the
right one you want to low expansionwindow and door foam. It's sometimes labeled
window and door. Sometimes it's labeledlow expansion. The reason for that a
it's a water base and it onlyexpands one to two times the size of

(08:33):
the bead. Your standard like greatstuff foam will expand seven times. Plus
it's a your thane base. Soyeah, I bought one of those,
one of those great stuff guns. And the window foam so cool, controllable
and you can turn it off andyeah, like the cans that you just
have to throw away when you're done. So right right, you'll be good

(08:56):
man, What a difference it'll make. Good. I'm glad to hear that.
We're going in my room and straight. Thank you, all right,
you bet, take care bye bye. Kind of building on that again from
a call from yesterday. As wetighten up our homes a little bit each
year. We've been doing this forforty years probably, and we do tighten

(09:16):
it up. We tighten it up, we tighten it up, and then
we talk about exchange air, exchangingunits, keeping that air inside the home
healthy. But oh my gosh, what a difference it makes. What that
project that he's doing will add somuch more comfort and decrease and minimize the
draft coming around those windows. It'llbe noticeable almost immediately. Another area is

(09:41):
outlets on outside walls. You've seenthe little packets in the hardware store,
their little foam pads. If you'veever when it's cold out someday or windy,
take that plate off and if youhave the phone insulator, take it
out. If you don't, you'llfeel it right away. I mean that
air rushes around that box, that'llaround that electrical box. And those little

(10:05):
pads are just nice little weather strippingpads that will eliminate that draft. And
another place is if you're ever replacingcarpeting underneath the baseboard on outside walls,
run a beat of clock there.Again, that's where a lot of infiltration
takes place. Sometimes, even onlight colored carpets, you can actually see

(10:28):
a black film up against that baseboardwhere that carpet's actually even working as a
filter. So a couple quick tipsair on helping seal up that house a
little bit, maybe in places younever would have thought of. All Right,

Twenty one minutes after the top ofthe hour. You're at home with Gary
Sullivan, Danny boy. He's answeringthe phones and doing a fine job there.
If you'd like to grab a line, do so. It's eight hundred
eight two three eight two five five. You know, one other quick thing,

(13:35):
and we were talking about the windowsand sealing that up. That's all
great again if you want to allowmore light into your home. You know,
this is the time here. Itis, at least in the Midwest,
kind of dark, gloomy. Takethe screens out, uh it.
I think I read an arc. It's like twenty to twenty five percent more

(13:58):
light getting into your home. Andthen we'll get into talking about you know,
it's a good winter project to rescreen. But just pop those things
out, storm in the grouge, storm in the basement. It'll add more
light into your home. James, welcome. Oh yes, Gary, I'm
telling about smoke alarm batteries I had. I probably got about six batteries or

(14:24):
six smoke alarms, and two ofthem started chirping out of the blue this
morning, and I noticed when Ipulled them they had different batteries in there.
And I've gotten the high end batteriesin the past, like whatever durasel,
and they don't seem to last. And I've even put new batteries in
and they chirp even with new batteries. So I know at one time you

(14:46):
had a discussion about batteries and smokealarms, and I wanted to find out
what is the preferred battery for thesesmoke alarms. Well, just really what
you're using, quite honestly, it'sa high end cell, you know,
nine volt battery and if you lookat the packages, they've really improved the
longevity of those batteries, James, and I know you're experiencing the other so

(15:09):
I've got some ideas for you also. But I had one started chirping,
and I'm always preaching about changing them. Guess who didn't change this one?
Me? And I pulled it outand I date the batteries and it was
dated two seventeen, twenty seventeen whenI put it in, so that had
lasted six years, and I don'tknow how long it was in the package,

(15:31):
but on the new Dura cell andsome of your higher end ones also,
you know you can tell easily byprice with what you're getting in a
battery. You know, you don'teven sound a package good for ten years
now you know what your yours didn'tmake it. So the other things that

(15:52):
make smoke alarms chirp if you will, is the alarm itself can get dirty
and dusty. Always tell people whenyou replace the battery, if you got
a shop back or a sweeper andjust kind of vacuum the inside of that,
sometimes they get a little clogged withdust and that will make them chirp.

(16:15):
It isn't the battery at all.So that's something to keep in mind.
The other thing is, remember smokealarms. The lifespan of smoke alarms
only ten years. Now you cantest them, but and I've got probably
some in my house that are thatare over ten years. But that's another

(16:37):
thing to keep in mind. Buti'd clean mind, Joe James, and
you know, go ahead and replacethe battery of the high end battery and
clean at at the same time. How do you test them? Mine are
seven years old. Yeah, thehouse of seven, so I assume the
smoke alarms are seven. Yeah.So what you can do is usually there

(16:59):
is just a test button on therewhere you can just press it, okay,
and it'll set it off. Theother thing you do is google the
brand name of the smoke alarm andtest and it'll have an excerpt right out
of the owner's manual. But that'susually how it tested. It just used
the test button itself. Okay. Then I noticed they sell lithium nine gold

(17:23):
batteries and I go with one ofthose. Well you can. It's not
gonna hurt anything. I mean itcan, and that's a ten year battery.
Okay. Yeah, they're quite expensivethough. Yeah, well that's what
I mean. Those duror cells,I keep grasping for what they are.
They're not. I'm sure Dura sellmakes a lithium but the regular packet with

(17:47):
the black and gold, that's theone. I always seem to have it
in my house, if you will. But like I said, that one
I just pulled out was six yearsold. Who knows how long I had
in the house before I put itin to the alarm. And that ain't
bad if you're seven you get sixand you know, and I hate to
even talk like that because the NationalFire Association always tells you to replace him

(18:10):
once a year. So my insurancecompany used to send me a lot of
nine gold batteries once a year. They stopped doing that though they were they
were, they had their logo onit. So I don't know, that's
nice. That's a nice idea though, all right, thank you, all

(18:32):
right, you bet, James, thank you. That is a good idea
exactly. But smoke alarms need tobe clean. I need to be replaced,
they say in ten years. Iknow, the new kiddies not new,
they're probably five years old now. They come with a built in lithium
battery. And it's interesting, Itell you. Smoke alarms last ten years.

(18:56):
Lithium battery ten years. Yeah,So when that thing starts chirping,
you literally pitch it put a newone in. And that's probably a pretty
safe way of doing it too.All right, Joe, when we come
back, you'll be up first ifyou'd like to join us. Do so.

Our phone number if you'd like tojoin us, ask a question.
It's eight hundred eight two three eighttwo five to five and Joe welcome.

(22:03):
Hey, thanks, carry say I'vegot a new construction home. Okay,
And my shower was supposed to bea big open shower, meaning no walls.
It's it's it's ten by ten openin front of a window and so
forth. The problem is when theydid the concrete, it was all supposed

(22:26):
to go down towards the drain sothat the water, you know, doesn't
splash out and go into the restof the house. Right. They did
not do that. It is crooked. When we did the test for the
shower the other day, you know, water start running into the living room
and so forth. Oh my gosh. Yeah, So I need to do
a new floor, or I don'twant to do a new floor, but

(22:49):
I need to. I don't wantto tile it because I want that concrete
that stained concrete look. So I'mlooking for a product that I can put
over the concrete, you know, like another form of concrete or something that
I can do gentle slope into thedrain. And my research is I've kind

(23:11):
of seen was crete either floor mud, and I've even seen that the UH
that they'll make floor pans out ofthe zand UH mix, the sand mortar
mix. Is there something else oris that floor mud the best thing for
you know, creating a new slopeso that it all gos into the drain.

(23:36):
There are some other products. Oneof them that I would consider that's
in their category is vinyl concrete patch. It is a patching compound. It's
usual you used mainly for like ifyou had concrete that was spawling with the

(23:59):
surface became you know, pot markedand you know rough, and you just
needed to kind of smooth it out. It is. It can be applied
at up to a half inch andmy guess is you wouldn't need any more
than that anyway. No, it'sa very smooth texture. It's and it's

(24:26):
almost, you know, like gray, which won't matter. The question I
had on it is how's it goingto look when it's stained? Yes,
that's that was going to say,how well does that take? Uh?
So I don't know that answer.I I just don't. I mean,

(24:48):
it will take it, but Idon't know what it's going to look like.
You know, when you use anacid stain on, like a sand
mix, it almost looks marbleized toa degree, and I and and it's
a whole different texture and everything. So I just don't know what it looked
like. The other product, whichis what I was going to recommend,
would really look or really work well, but you can't stain it. I

(25:14):
don't believe you could call them. It's the Dicee Coatings product that I've talked
about. It's just been introduced.I believe it was in June or July
of this year. It is anon sementatious product. It's an acrylic resin.
It's trillable, it comes pre mixed. It is uh man, it's

(25:37):
gonna last too, and you canapply that up to a half inch also.
And it's called a rock fix andyou might go on their website it's
Diche Daich Coatings dot com. Andthat is, Uh, there's a lot

(26:00):
of videos and different things on theirproducts. I don't know if they'll address
again whether it can be stained. It could be you know, certainly a
coding put on it, like theirroller rock or something along those lines,
but that might not be the lookyou want. Okay, okay, so
don't how do you pronounce that dice? It's d A I C H.

(26:25):
So it's Dice Codings dot com.Okay, So Dice Coatings or the other
one was the final concrete pere vinyl, all right? And you would recommend
that over the uh quick creek,uh, the mud stuff, you know,
I don't know if i'd recommend itover it. I think I would

(26:48):
recommend it as another thing you coulduse. I don't know if i'd be
able to say, I definitely usethis one over that one. One other
thing you might look at. Haveyou ever seen those pre formed pans that
are made of cement board? Yeah? But uh, you know, when
you're talking a you know, tenby twelve shower opening, that's a year,

(27:15):
that's a big that's a big areais it able to hold the heat.
Well, yeah, it's uh,what do you mean by hold the
heat? Well, you know whenyou have a shower in your you know,
in wintertime, maybe your house isat sixty eight degrees or something,
and you take a shower and thenyou know, let's say a I don't

(27:41):
know, a four by eight shower, three by six shower, and you
got the doors that go up.It kind of holds that whole area that
steam and it's almost saunal like whenyou get out to eight by ten showers.
You get that displacement of the heatin that area. So I don't.
Yeah, well it's it's actually it'sit's it's designed as a whole open

(28:04):
concept. The whole house is there'sno doors, it's just all opened.
Okay. So uh yeah, andI did do an ICF house. Okay,
I don't have any drafts or anythingin Yeah. I love those those
things are. Yeah, they're they'rewonderful. Yeah, they're nice. They're

(28:26):
you know you do in floor heatand so forth, and it's you don't
have to worry about I agree.I agree. All right, Well,
thank you for the call. Ihope that helps a little bit. Joe
Yep thank you so much. Allright, you bet take care. Let
me give you the phone number ifyou'd like to join us, please do.
We've got open lines and it's eighthundred eight two three eight two five

(28:53):
five. I got my winter timemaintenance task checklists out, and of course
I've seen everybody gives us tips now, and I'm only laughing because gosh,
I think we've been doing this tipfor thirty years and I've seen it now
on weather channels and everybody does it. But I can't tell you how important

(29:15):
it is. Well, I cantell you it's important, folks if you
live in an area where it's gonnabe below freezing. And I see it
all the time. Hey, Iwent to my kid's house about four or
five years ago and I said, man, you got to get that hose
off that faucet. So remember thefaucets on the outside the home. No,
no, faucets are all the same. But you got two generations of

(29:40):
faucets outside on you on your house. You got your regular lawn faucet,
and a lawn faucet is just thefaucet which is connected to a pipe right
outside, I mean right behind thebreak, right behind the wood. That's
what either screws on or it's beensoldered on. But that pipe coming from

(30:06):
the house goes right up to theoutside and that faucet is put on.
Now, yeah, on that one, you got to take the hose off.
But you got more work to dothan that. When you have that
type of faucet, you want toshut the water off from inside the house.
There's usually a valve right in thejoist pocket. Shut that off.

(30:27):
There's a little cap where it bleedsthe line. You don't get a little
cup underneath it. Take that capoff, the water goes back in the
cup. Put the little bleeder capback on, and you have shut the
water off. You have drained thatpipe. You're in good shape, all
right. Then there's the frost prooffaucet. Some people call them freezeproof,

(30:49):
not really freeze proof. They're frostproof. This has the faucet and it already
has the pipe that is manufactured withthe faucet valve. Valve all is one
piece. They come eight inch eightinches length of pipe ten inch twelve inch
that's connected again goes right into theinside of the house. There's either it's

(31:10):
connected to the galvanized pipe. Thecopper pipe, the plastic pipe whatever it
is, screws on or is connectedvia a fitting. Now, that faucet,
it's it's tilted towards the ground. So when you shut it off outside,
what happens. Yeah, the waterin that tube drains the faucet,

(31:36):
So that stem is actually all theway into the house. There's not another
valve inside the house. So youjust once you shut that off, it
drains the water out of the pipeand you're good to go. Unless and
this is this is where you getin trouble. Unless you have just left

(31:56):
the hose connected to that faucet.Figure it out. You shut the faucet
off, the water drains from thattoo. But that hose is filled with
water. It can't drain. Itgoes down to twenty five degrees a bunch
of nights, the water and thehose freezes. The water going up into
the valve and into the pipe andinto the house can't drain. It freezes,

(32:22):
It might expand and split, alittle, water leaks on the inside.
You're probably not gonna notice it.Next year when you go use that
and you turn that baby on,you'll notice it then. So the tip
here is, you know, ifyou have the older type wand faucet,

(32:42):
you're gonna have to turn that valveoff inside, take the bleeder cap off,
bleed the water out of the valve. If you got the frostproof faucet,
just get to just get the connectionoff that valve. That's all you
got to do. If you wantto get a little insulated cap right over
it, that's fine. That'll giveyou added protection. If you've got a
little gap between the brick and thepipe from that frostproof faucet, even though

(33:07):
the water is drained out of thatpipe and you want to diminish the draft
and letting cold air in, that'sfine. Little calking expandable foam, et
cetera. Do that. But whateveryou do, get that hose off.

is one of the things we're speakingabout today and giving you some hips and
had a couple of calls. Ifyou got a question, feel free to
join us. It's eight hundred eighttwo three eight two five five. Nanny

(36:08):
Gleeson will take your call and we'llget you on the air and get you
a solution and back to work andno time at all. One of the
things we were talking about, andI mentioned it before we took another call,
was if you're you know different thingsand maintenance. I've talked in the
past about screens, screens and windows, and we start talking about because somebody

(36:31):
was asking about ceiling up a window. Screens and windows. They in the
wintertime, they block a lot oflight depending on where you live. You
know, it can be kind ofcloudy and gloomy all the way through winter,
and those screens block about twenty ortwenty five percent of the light.
And I'm talking mainly like the blackfiberglass screening. Plus the lifespan of that

(36:55):
screening is only about twelve years andcomes threadbare, kind of turns a little
chalky white, and so getting themout during the wintertime is advantageous, right,
gives you a little extra life onthe screen, brings in more light,
into the home. And it alsogives you an opportunity. And the
opportunity is this, if that screenis ten years old, twelve years old,

(37:19):
starting to look a little tired, get them out of the windows.
Let what light is available to getinto your house. You'll feel better.
And in the winter time, maybethere's a weekend or something you're looking for
something to do. A good littleproject is either clean no screens in a
laundry tub, or to just replacethe screening material. An easy project to

(37:44):
do depending on how big this screenis, but you you know, clamp
the frame down to a workbench ora ping pong table if you want something
flat and large, and get yourchoice those screens. Probably the most popular
is the black fiberglass screen minimizes glareeasy to work with and it's held in

(38:06):
there by a rubber spline and there'sprobably four or five different sizes of that.
So when you go to buy thescreen, bring in a little piece
of that spline. You'll get aspline tool, which looks like a big
dull pizza cutter. You lay thescreen over the frame, you push the
spline into the frame, there's alittle groove there, and then take the

(38:29):
splining tool and just run it overand push that spline down into that channel
holding the screen in place. Agood winter time project. So you've got
multiple benefits there, right. Imean, we've allowed light to come in,
more light to enter into your home. That's good. We've taken the

(38:49):
screens out, so we're going toextend the life of the screen. That's
good. And then if the screenis all a little bit worn once you
take it out, you now havean opportunity to do it, you know,
maybe in the middle of the winter, you know, when you're not
playing golf, to go ahead andre screen and a good winter time project.

(39:10):
So that's also good. So Iwanted to pass that along another area.
As we look at and I thinkwe've had a couple of winter storms,
maybe out west was where the bulkof them have been to this point.
Take a look at the outside ofyour home. We talked about this
this summer. That's the only timewe really talked about it. Take a

(39:34):
look at that where the trees, you know, a lot of them lost
their leaves already, and how muchhow many branches are hanging over the roof
of your house and anticipating high windssnowstorms, ice storms, that's a real
good thing to trim them back awayfrom the house. And a lot of

(39:55):
the folks that work in that businessare available in the wintertime too, so
you can really see what's going onwith those trees and if they're hanging right
over the home. I had minetrimmed about five years ago, very aggressively,
and they're what a great idea wasbecause I got them away from the

(40:15):
roof of the house, and Idon't want that to be in jeopardy when
there's an ice storm. All right, let's get to the phone calls,
and we got Ron Ron. Welcomemorning, Gary. I have a painting
question already. A few years ago, I had to have somebody paint my

(40:37):
bathroom and they gave me what theysaid after it was over, a custom
finish. Okay, what had actuallyhappened is when he started painting, he
found a small area of orange peel, and then he decided he was going

(41:00):
to give me the custom finish andorange peel. The entire room wasn't real
thrilled with that, but what couldI do? He did? He did
give me a break, though hedid say I'm not going to charge you
the extra seventy five dollars for thecustom panish. I'm not going to charge

(41:21):
you for the custom paint the well, by the way, I hope you
like it. Yeah. So myquestion is, would a premium paint like
a Sherwin Williams Emerald or Nugration properlyapplied cover of that orange peel and hide
it? To be real honest,Ron, I would say you would have

(41:45):
to lightly sand it. I mean, he would minimize it, but I
don't think you'd hide it. Ijust got finished a big painting project in
my house in my office had aa faux paint on it, and it
was, you know, an offwhite with like a goldish faux glaze on

(42:08):
it. And I never really eventhought much about it. I'd put my
hand on it and it wasn't supersmooth, but it wasn't really it wasn't
it. It wasn't as rough asan orange peel. And I kept looking
at that, and I didn't tryto just paint it. I did sand
it first, and when I gotall the residue cleaned up and got it

(42:31):
sanded, I was really glad.I don't think it would have covered it,
so I would lightly sand it Okay, you know you're going to go
to that work anyway, you mightas well just knock it down a little
bit. I don't think you gotto kill yourself doing it, but I
think i'd smooth it out. Okay, I appreciate your opinion. I have

(42:52):
a good day. You do thesame, Ron, Thanks for the call.
It's a good question. All right. Uh, Shelley, you'll be
