great time to use Miss Muffett's Revengeand for indoor and outdoor use to get
rid of that mold, mildew, fungus, algae and all that gunk yep.
The regular Wet and Forget X tierWalmart, Amazon Home Depot asrdware or

Home with Gary Sullivan and that podcastis available in case you missed it.
All right, we got the podcastup and wherever podcasts are, including the
iHeart app, including my website atHome with Garysullivan dot com and it's at
(01:42):
Home with Gary Sulivan online dot com. Just like that. You'll be there
bango or Garysullivan online dot com.Yeah, something like that. I'm putting
a struggle bus today. Usually I'mon the struggle bus. Now you know
what's going on. I don't know. We're trying. We're trying. Now,
all right, let's get back tothe phone calls. Debbie, welcome,
(02:05):
Thank you, Garry. Late spring, we had a landscaping truck in
our driveway and the hydraulic fluid linebroke. It blew in the driveway,
and so they tried a oil absorbentproduct. It didn't work, and then
they came back and tried a dawnedproduct to scrub it. It didn't work.
So then about a month later, they sent out a ceiling company and
(02:28):
they sealed the driveway and the mantold my husband that the stain will still
come through. But that's not thatwon't solve the problem. Sure enough,
Now it's coming back through. Whatcan we do? Yeah, product we
can put down. Well, nowabout the ceiling. Okay, so you
know the product comes down, ithas to come in contact with the fluid
(02:51):
and will that will that product gothrough the ceiler? We now know the
oil will come through seiler and oilwill so if it's on the surface,
it'll take care of the surface product. Probably this is concrete. I presume
it's asphalt. Okay, then Igot one product to try it because I
(03:15):
was gonna say. In concrete, you got capillaries that that oil goes down
and down and it just keeps goingdown. Asphalt, it's a little more
difficult, but a lot of thingsthat remove oils from concrete you can't use
on asphalt because you'll you'll dissolve theasphalt. So be careful. You know,
(03:36):
when you go through the hardware storesand stuff. There is one product
it's actually used in oil fields. It's called a C t SO ACT So
it's ACT Cleaner or ACT Cleaners dotcom. You gotta get it on the
website. And what it is.It is a it's a microbe that actually
(04:03):
eats oil and it's a powder. You sprinkle it on. It might take
three, four, five days, but it will eat that oil and eliminate
it all. Right. Would wehave to have the driveway sealed again after
that's done? Well, I don'tthink so. I think you're gonna have
(04:27):
to wait and see. I'm noteven you know, I'm a little concerned
whether we're going to have to usethe ACT cleaner multiple times. And here's
why. If it's an asphalt sealerand that oil's staining and coming up,
I get that the ACT cleaner willget to the oil that it can touch,
(04:48):
right, I mean, it's nota liquid, so it's going to
eat that oil. Now, howmuch of one sprinkling that pulls up I
don't know. So what I'm sayingthere may be repeated applications. Still we
clean all that oil up. Myguess is you would not have to reseal
(05:14):
because it's not going to uh hurtor compromise the asphalt sealer. Okay,
but you very well may have touse multiple applications on it. Okay.
So what you're saying is the drivewayshould not have been sealed until we had
used a product like this. That'scorrect, That's correct. Yeah, all
(05:36):
right, it's good to know.Well, thank you so much. We
listened to you every weekend and we'vegotten a lot of knowledge, especially with
our deck. There you go,There you go. So their website again
is Actcleaners dot com dot com.Right, okay, thank you so much.
All right, you're welcome, Thankyou, bo. But yeah,
that's tricky, and and even evenwhen you get into concrete, it's tricky.
(06:03):
But coming through the asphalt it's moreof a surface sealer, whereas a
concrete's more of a penetrant seiler. So when it penetrates and seals it in
the capilaries, if it still cancome through, it's a challenge. If
it's asphalt and it comes through,it's hard to eliminate it in one you
(06:26):
know, one application. I mentionedthis last week, and I mention it
again because I know a lot ofpeople this time of year grilling out,
and a lot of people have theirgrill on pressure treated wood or even composite
wood grilling out and you get someyou know, oil and grease from the
hamburgers that you're making or whatever. It drips on the composite or pressure treated
(06:47):
wood. This act cleaner sprinkled onthere. If you try the don liquid,
soap and all all those products whichwill sometimes work that ac tea cleaner
will dissolve that also or eat thatis the way they claim it to do.
It's a micro that eats oils andgrease. All right, let's go
(07:10):
to Roger. Roger welcome. Goodmorning, Gary, good morning. Always
enjoyed listen to you on Saturday.Thank you. And I have been listening
to your commercials and your ideas aboutdice. And a friend of mine had
(07:31):
replace his porch floor and it sawplywood now, and he went ahead and
decided put a carpeting down, butthe sun and weather ate it away.
And I told him, I said, would it be possible to use the
dice on plywood? So you're askingme people, Yes, okay, Yes,
(07:54):
it is labeled to be able touse on plywood and even pressure treated
wood, like we had the onefellow talk about the product a deck over.
It can work on that also,so you can use it over plywood.
Having said that, I've not usedit on plywood, I have used
(08:16):
it on several different things, includingceramic tile. Ceramic tile you would think
would be difficult to have a coatingbite onto, and the roller rock dice
coding did bite to that. SoI'm assuming you know it says you know
furniture too. In fact, mysister used some of the roller rock or
(08:37):
maybe the spreadstone on a countertop anda kitchen table, and so yes,
it's labeled for wood. Yes,okay, when you use it on the
ceramic talp, did you have todo any standing after? No? No
standing? No standing? All right? Well when you say sanding, are
you talking about standing it for another code or are you talking because on
(09:01):
the spreadstone you sand in between codes? Okay, and but the final surface
you leave it alone. That's correct, okay? All right? So I'm
thinking about the ceramic coding ceramic also, okay, and with apply with I'm
going to suggest that the friend ofmine we applyed together to help him mine
(09:24):
a sure sure and go on theirwebsite too. They got some great videos
on the whole process. I willdo that, all right. Very good
for your advice, Thank you, take care, bye bye. So I'm
still a little confused on the standing, so honest, and the reason is
how we's going to use it.So they make different products, right,
(09:46):
So you got the dice codings, you got the roller rock, you got
the spreadstone. On the spreadstone countertopkit, you you sand in between.
But it's not like you got toget out the sander. It's just sanding
sponge that they put in there. So you're just kind of knocking that down
a little bit. And on thespreadstone there's actual some mineral in there which
(10:09):
will add a little bling to it. So I would say light standing with
the sanding sponge is all you're gonnaneed. And again, if you go
on a website, they got somegreat videos on the whole application process.

Donald welcome, Thank you, Harry, Yes, sir, I'm building above
ground pool deck ten foot deep andtwelve foot wide. My four corner posts,
(14:22):
you know, I'm done thirty sixinches deep. My question the center
three? Can I get by withjust using the cement whatever you call them,
to put the post on? Orshould I dig the holes? Well,
you can put a footer on there. You just got to make sure
it's big enough and deep enough andthen use the bracket and just set them
(14:43):
in there. Well, no,I was going to use the two by
six is twelve foot, you know, put a bean down through there,
and then just set to two tosix is twelve foot on top of the
bean. That way, I wouldn'thave to be cutting all the six foot
I'd have somebody inspect that plans.I don't know if I can answer that
(15:05):
based on the information, to behonest with you, how far off the
ground is it? Oh? Well, let's see, this is it?
It's five foot up. Like thecorner posts, they're gonna be four before
twelve foot length, you know, just get up to the to the railing.
The railing. Yeah, so thethree center posts, you know,
(15:28):
that's going to hold up the technicallygoing to hold up the deck. Right,
I can dig in three foot, but then I have to turn around
and get you know, twelve footfour before us again. Yeah, that's
gonna be so deep, and soyeah, I'm gonna I'm gonna think right
now again where you're buying, notjust having double check your your drawings and
(15:50):
stuff. I'm gonna guess that's gonnabe okay based on the information you're given
me though. Uh. But again, when you buy them, just tell
them what you're trying to do andmake sure they can do a load.
They can look at the load thatyou're talking about in the high have all
your measurements and everything, and evenif it's a sketched out drawing. I
think that's what I would do ratherthan just having this conversation not being able
(16:14):
to really visualize it. But theway you describe it, I think you'd
be okay. But double checking whenyou get the wood. All righty Donald,
thank you much for that call, and let's go to Chris. Chris.
Welcome, Hey Chris, Chris, can you hear me? I can?
(16:37):
So. I have a kitchen thinkthat was really clogged up, so
I called the plumber out. Theysnaked it. When they pulled the snake
back, it was just covered ingray horrible smelling grease, and they said
that. They said, well, the snake is not gonna do this.
We got to get a jedder outhere. And so they brought out a
(16:57):
jetter and they couldn't get it togo around the tee pipes. They couldn't
get it to get more than abouta foot into the pipe, and so
they went to the basement and theysnaked it from there. But it still
has a lot of grease in there. I'm wondering if there's anything that I
can do since they can't get ajetter in there, to help clear out
(17:19):
all that grease that is down there, because it just wants to keep clogging
up. Well, h so thisis all in the interior pipe, then
correct correct, okay, and beyondthat clean out port in the basement or
whatever, it's clear going down andout. Well, you know, it
goes the pipes come down until itgets to the three inch pipes. There's
(17:42):
only one spot in the basement wherethere was like a little sleeve over the
pipe, and when he pulled thesleeve back, there was a little hole
and he could take the snake andhe could run backwards towards the sink.
But he still couldn't get the jetterin there. Yeah, and that was
the only spot that he could getinto. A bunch of stuff cleared.
When he did that, he said, a whole bunch of you know,
(18:03):
food particles and hair and stuff thatcame out. He said, there's still
grease up in there. So didhe have any suggestion on a product.
No, he didn't seem to knowwhat what I well, there's different products
out there that are non acid base. So he didn't really give you any
solution at all. He just said, I can't help you out. He
(18:26):
snaked it, which made it better. It drained. I put some boiling
water down it and then sewed upto you know, it's a two sided
sink with a disposal on one side, sink on the other. I filled
them both up with really hot tapwater about four or five times and just
ran hot water down it. Itried. I tried vinegar and baking soda,
(18:48):
and it's draining right now, butit's not draining perfectly. And whenever
I turn on the disposal it backsup. Yeah, And the only thing
I could really offer you as asuggestion is there's different products out there.
Don't use an acid product, Butthere's different products like Drainbow, and there's
also one that is a enzyme cleaner. You mix with hot water, you
(19:11):
put it down the drain at night, you let it sit overnight. That
actually eats the gunk. And youcan try that, and you're probably gonna
do it, you know, everynight for probably a couple of weeks and
see if we can loosen that up. The problem is, it sounds like
there's a lot of it. Idon't know if those enzymes are gonna be
(19:33):
capable enough to remove all that, and so that's gonna be a challenge.

How about that? Huh? Onthat one? You did it?
All right? All right, it'skind of a sleepy day for me today.
I don't know why. All right, let's get back to the phone
calls, and I'll give you thecorrect phone number, which I have done.
Yay me, it's eight hundred eightytwo three eight two five five.
(23:27):
Go ahead, and Griveline Danny answerthe call and mark welcome, Good morning,
Gary, morning. Hi. Webuilt a house moved from Cincinnati down
to a town near Knoxville, Fantasy, about a year and a half ago.
And we're built a ranch with afull basement. The ranch or the
(23:49):
main living areas twenty three and fortysquare feet. And I have a separate
unit for my basement. But mymain unit is a three time unit high
efficiency. I shouldn't mention. AlsoI have foam infulation in the walls,
okay enough in the attic as well. Anyway, by humidity is I can't
(24:11):
get below on a regular day fiftyfive. Everyone's closer to fifty eight or
seven in the house. Okay, not too hateful, but I think you'd
like to have it down another fivepoints, I guess. Yeah. Shouldn't
it be in the little fifties thistime of year? Yeah? Yeah,
if you can keep it between fiftyand fifty five, so you're not too
(24:33):
far off. But if you cankeep it between fifty and fifty five,
that's ideal. That's ideal. Andit's been hot and humid, so that's
probably part of the issue. Letme ask you a couple of questions.
When you've got the air on,is the fan on auto? Or is
it on on? Or how doyou have that set up? It's on
(24:57):
auto? Okay, good? Good? And are we doing? And you
said you had a unit in thebasement too. I do. It's a
heat pump in the basement, butI rarely turn it. It rarely comes
on because it's obviously flow grade.Call down there. Do you know what
(25:19):
the humidity in the basement is?I have not checked that the unit down
there, the thermostat I don't thinkregisters it. I can buy a handheld
leader and city Mark I'd do that. I think I think what you're gonna
find is your basement humidity is probablysixty to sixty five percent. So so
(25:44):
moist air humidity is heavier and it'scooler, and it goes to the lowest
point of the house, right andthen it creates a ladder or stack effect.
Okay, so the source of theproblem is probably the basement, and
(26:07):
with that unit not running, that'syou know, there's nothing there to correct
that humidity. So I would sayyou don't necessarily have to have that running,
but I think you will need eitheran air exchanging unit down there,
you know, where you're pulling airout and allowing that other air from the
(26:32):
first floor to come down to thebasement, or running a do humidifier to
take that moisture out, which willthen lower the humidity level on the other
levels of the home. So thefirst investment you got is probably fifteen bucks,
get yourself a humidity gauge, putit down the basement, let's see
(26:55):
where we're at, and you know, if you're finding in sixties, that's
what that's kind of what you gottado. You got you got to drive
that basement out in order to lowerthe humidity level on the first floor.
Okay. I did install an easybreath when I built the house. Uh
huh, unfinished section of the basementout of about thousand square feet down there
(27:17):
and finished and right because unfinished withdoors, I didn't have a I put
in an easy breath, yeah, myself down there. Well, that'll help
to a degree. I mean that'llhelp to a degree. There's times I
have an easy breath. They hadone for twenty years or fifteen, I
guess, and they're still On occasionI have to run and do humidifire because
(27:37):
I'll close my vents down in thebasement. I don't need to cool it.
So just get one of those gauges. Let's let's see where you're at,
okay, and then we can adjustaccordingly. Okay. So if it
is high, you're saying you'd haveto go to dehumidifier or some kind of
a air movement device. Yeah, yeah, and make sure you're easy breathe.
(28:02):
I definitely put it on high ifyou're you know, and see if
you know if it's on low whenyou I don't know if you have the
one where it's high, medium, low, or whether it's got percentages.
They made them two different ways overthe years. I think it's I think
it's percentages year ago. Yeah,if you got it down all the way
to like forty percent, that's fine. That's not gonna I run full blest
(28:26):
all the time. But let's seewhere we are. If it if it's
in line with the upper floors, you know, it's it's it's not going
to be lower than the upper floors. I can tell you that right now.
So it's still going to be alittle bit high. But I'm gonna
bet you at sixty five plus.Okay, all right? Do you think
(28:48):
a three ton unit is big enoughfor that main floor? Should I have
gone bigger? No? Actually, you're better going smaller. So I think
three tons sounds pretty accurate for whatyou got. Okay, Yeah, the
originally said four times I said,no, I don't want to go that
big with the phone insulation, Isaid, I know you can go too
big and it becomes just as well, you know, And that's what I
(29:11):
was going to say. So whenpeople give you the square footage to figure
out how much, you know, how big a unit you want there there's
all these other variables. You know, new windows. Do you have insulation?
Is it foam insulation? You know, so you've got to really judge
the efficiency of the house to reallyproperly, you know, get the exact
size. That's why I laugh.People sell air conditioners over the web and
(29:36):
you do this little answer thing andthey'll tell you how big a unit you
need for your house, and notalways accurate, but it sounds like,
based on what you got, athree tons should be, you know,
pretty pretty accurate. Okay, welli'll get the handheld theater. See what
it is in the base. Okay, all right, very good, thank
(29:59):
you, you bet all right,Daniel, welcome. We're into humidity today.
Huh yeah, Gary, I gota question about my basement. When
I run the air conditioner air conditioning, the humidity in the basement goes up.
(30:19):
And I always thought that the airconditioner would lower the humidity. Air
conditioners do lower humidity. Yeah,it goes up from about fifty when I
don't run it, and when Irun it it goes up to about sixty
four in the basement. Could itbe pulling air from a crawl space?
(30:42):
I don't think so. It's anunfinished basement. There's no crawl space there.
There's no crawl space attached to thebasement. No, okay, Well,
the only other where is the airhandler? Is that in the basement.
Yeah, it's the furnace and airhandlers into basement. Is your fan
(31:04):
on automatic or is it on on? It's on recirculate, so it you
know it's autonic, and then itmakes sure it runs at least thirty minutes
every hour. So when you sayit's on, when I say it's on
automatic, it would only go onwhen the air conditioner kicks on, or
(31:29):
if it's on on it runs allthe time. It's not it. Yeah,
it's on what they call recirculate,so it it turns on periodically to
try and distribute the cold air throughoutthe house when the air conditioning is running.
So when you pull off the frontof your air handler, you're going
to see the coils for the airconditioner, which are always probably dripping wet,
(31:52):
because that's what's kind of taking thatmoisture out of the air. Okay,
if those coils are real wet andit's recirculating the air, it's throwing
that moisture in that air back intothe house. Okay, I would do
this. It's a new unit,it's only a year and a half.
(32:15):
Okay, Well, maybe call yourHVAC company then, because there is different
stage fans, different things that arenothing's easy anymore. You know, there's
different variations of air handlers. ButI had a caller as an air conditioning
coming about two or three years ago, say tell me the same thing I
(32:37):
just told you, and I didn'tbelieve. I was having some issues with
humidity I couldn't control, and I'dalways been able to control it, but
I started running and I've always beentaught to run it on or recirculating if
you will. And he's this guy. And I've talked to a lot of
(32:57):
heating and air guys and I stilltalk to a lot of them. In
theygo, that doesn't make sense.I said, this guy called me up
and he told me this story, and it makes sense to me. And
I tried it and it worked. But now they have five stage blowers and
everything else. So you might wantto just double check if it's just a
year and a half, or doa little bit more research, or if
(33:22):
you want to just go ahead andtry it. But I said that to
somebody a couple of weeks ago,and they go, well, they told
me it's got to run all thetime, and okay, but I put
mine in the summertime, I putit on auto. In the winter,
I run the fan on on thefan runs all the time in the winter,
(33:45):
I do, and in the summerit only runs when the air conditioner's
running. All right, Well,I'll try the auto and see if that

(38:06):
critical, especially when you have these, you know, big time downpours looking

(38:30):
That's our phone number. Grab aline, Roger, Welcome, Hey,
how we doing Gary doing great?Thank you? Hey, it's a pleasure.
I have a quick question. Twentynineteen, I had a roof company
contact me and tell me that Ihad root damage, and so I was
(38:51):
kind of you know, skeptical becauseyou know, I'm old school and I
pay for insurance and never never useit. But anyway, they said they
would get my insurance involved, andthey did, and the entrance agreed that
there was a damage. So fastforward, they said, get an estimate.
We're right, cut a check, and they did. They did the
job, and when they was done, it looked like a good job.
(39:15):
Four five years later, all ofa sudden, part of my group is
starting to implode. And uh,and that's that's the only way I can
describe it. It's imploding. Andso I called called him, and they
came over and looked at it,and they called up in the attic and
they said, they said, it'sawful hot up there. It's too hot.
(39:36):
You should have had it Ridge cat. And of course I looked at
the young man Tony, and Isaid, you know, I deliver mail
for a living. I'm not aroofer. That's not my wheelhouse. I
would think that would be something youall would do. So anyway, my
question, Jarry is this. Hesaid that he would look at it,
he would get with the powers tobe, and he get back with him,
and they got back with me andsaid that they would get me an
(39:57):
estimate and and come over and dothe job. And I'm like, does
that's all right to you? Gary? I mean, well, there's quite
a few things that don't sound real, right, But so number one,
I guess the biggest question is whenthey put that roof on. I don't
(40:20):
you know a lot of times wecall them storm chasers, and they're not
all bad storm chasers, but youknow, people at arbitrarily show up at
your house and say, hey, would you like me inspect your roof?
Hey, you got you got stormdamage. I've seen, or maybe not
have seen, but I've heard ofstories where people have seen people inspecting roofs
(40:44):
creating the storm damage. Okay, now I'm not saying that happen to you.
Okay, they work with your youknow, balpen hammers look like hail
damage. I'm not saying this happensall the time, but we all know
there's you know, people that aren'talways by the mark, so they get
to put a new roof on.They're usually not your best roofers, right,
(41:05):
I mean, you know, theirtheir deal is to get that shingle
charged out, get to check fromthe insurance company. See you see it
never now whether that happened. Yeah, they're they're a local company. They've
been in business for Oka quite sometimes. Okay, okay, all right,
(41:28):
so let's let's say they're above board. That's how they that's their marketing.
We'd like to inspect your roof. You've got hell damage. We'll work the
insurance company. You know, yes, I put your roof on when they
gave you that bid. You knowwhen I always talk about getting two or
(41:49):
three bids, they absolutely one,no questions asked, should have put the
whole ventilation thing on that bid. There is absolutely no way they shouldn't have.
Let you know that. Here's why. Here's why that warranty on that
(42:12):
roof. There's different things that voidwarranties right out of the shot. One
of them is putting a roof overan old roof, and the other one
and big capital letters, is inadequateventilation. Well, this is what I
think happened. Gary. My housewas built in nineteen seventy seven. It
had the traditional black black shingles. They're not textured, and so I think
(42:39):
that what they did is where againI'm not you know, a roofer,
but I think what happened was theylooked at my roof and measured it,
got the square yardage, and upgradedme to the textured shingle, which I
believe might be a little heavier.Yeah, and I think they looked at
(43:00):
the sixth vents I had on theback of my roof, ordered those and
went with that. They never wentin the attic. They never looked at
anything. And now I've got aproblem and they're telling me they're charge me
more money. And I think,well, I don't know if there's anything
you're going to do about it,Roger, but they're in the wrong.
If they were, they treated youwrong, because first of all, there's
(43:23):
a formula on ventilating an attic. In fact, the number one thing is
do you have softad venting? Andthat's you do. Okay, So you
got soft ad venting and then yougot like shoe box vents on the roof
itself. That may be adequate, but it may not be adequate. I
(43:46):
just read an article. It's seventypercent of the roofs that are ventilated or
inadequately ventilated, and the roofing companieswere getting killed. So you know,
you might want to call another ruferand just get their opinion. On it,
get their take on it. Butit sounds like they didn't use the
(44:07):
proper formula and you don't have enoughventilation up there, and it's screwed up
the room. Well, I appreciateeverything is And you told me again,
I'm a long time listener. Iappreciate. I appreciate. Three hundred square
foot footprint of a home requires onesquare foot of uninterrupted ventilation split fifty to
(44:31):
fifty. All right, Quentin,Melanie Mario, sit tight. We'll get
you on the other side of thebreak. And you're at home with Gary
