(00:29):
Well, it's a weekend. Welcome, you're at home with Gary Sullivan.
This hour's brought to you by easyBreathe again two hundred and fifty dollars off
your easy Breed ventilation system the entiremonth of August. Just visit e Z
two letters eas Breathe dot com dotoday take advantage of that. That's a

(00:49):
great deal. All right, let'sget back to work. What do you
say. Let me give you thephone number. It's eight hundred eight two
three eight two five five lines areopen for you and carry kick us off.
Welcome, Thank you for taking mycall. So this is part plug
for dice coding, part call ofshame for me. So I did my

(01:17):
kitchen counters I'm going to guess itto be six or eight years ago,
and it went on well. Iwas very pleased with it. I thought
I followed all the instructions except Ifailed to steal behind the sink. Oh

(01:37):
yeah, And so it's probably I'mgoing to guess it to be between a
quarter and three eighths of an inchbetween the edge of the stainless steel and
where it curves up on the backsplash. So, of course, after a
few years I started rolling in separatepeeling rolling up? So what should I
do next? Well, do yougotta aim it left? No? Okay,

(02:06):
Well, whenever anything is failing, and it is failing, it's failing
to stay attached to the substrate becauseyou know the lack of the sealer,
so you know it's going to continueto do do that, we either have
to remove that and reapply the coatingand seal. I mean, that's basically

(02:30):
what we're down to. So yeah, uh, standing it off should remove
it? I'm guessing based on theway you kind of talk the way it's
actually peeling up, so and it'sjust occurring in that area, correct,
Oh yes, right, and Iand I have been very trying to be

(02:53):
very careful every time I use thatsat to dry back there, but you
know it's inevitable. Yeah. Yeah, Well, so here's what I would
do, okay, cuz you knowI'm a consumer too, and you know,
I don't know if they can helpyou with this. I mean,
the bottom line is you'd have tosend it off, put the two coats

(03:15):
on just like you did before, and then put the sealer on, and
you're gonna probably buy a ninety percenttoo much product. Okay, so that
means it can be solved, butit also means that's a pain, right,
So I think I would call upthere. Yeah, i'd call up

(03:36):
there if you can talk to somebody, tell them what the dilemma dilemma is,
and wonder if they could send youlike a little sample thing. I
don't know if they can. Idon't. I just don't know, but
i'd ask because otherwise you're gonna haveto buy another kit to make that repair,
right right, Okay, I washelping you would say, yeah,

(03:57):
you know, you get all thatout and then a little whatever in there.
Yeah yeah, yeah, no,because you're gonna have to have it
match and you're gonna have to youknow, so really you're gonna have to
do that. You're gonna have toget that off and redo that one little
area. So again, I don'tknow if they have any little sample kits
or you know, just to askthem. The worst they can say is

(04:19):
no, right right, Okay,Well thank you so much. I appreciate
it, all right, thank you? Yeah, yep, that was she
was being very honest. She lovedit right seven years, but then there
was a problem on my end,and yeah, it's got to be sealed.
I love that product because it reallyis simple. It's a you know,

(04:42):
light standing one coat, like, try another coat, let it try
light sanding. Make the little sparklescome up. I'm talking about the spreadstone
kid. And because they got theone that looks like marble and granted now
so they're really expanding it because it'sthat easy. And then the seiler,
so you know, it's a neatlittle weekend project. All right, let's

(05:06):
get to Bob. Bob, welcome, thanks for taking my call here.
You're quite welcome. I got aquestion for you. I need to put
on a driveway seiler, and Ineed to know what the one you you
recommend, So the one that lastten years? Yeah, this is concrete.

(05:30):
I've heard you before, but ohit's shame on me. I didn't
even ask that question. Okay, yea, yeah, So so tell me
it's a it's a driveway. Howold is it? When was it last
sealed? Give me a little moreinformation. So it's about five years old
and it was sealed right after itwas poored. Okay, okay, So

(05:51):
we want a breathable sealer. Veryimportant. You know, it keeps water
from deep petration of the concrete. Also exhaust water up through the concrete.
Uh. The one I've talked aboutprobably the most recently was a web based
product. In other words, it'ssold on the web. It's called Masonry

(06:15):
Defender. Masonry Defender, it's aproject specific types of concrete sealers. The
very first one it shows is adriveway in sidewalk seiler. That's the one
that is breathable. That's the onethat you put on. You can't even
see it after it's put on.You can put you can roll it on,

(06:38):
you can brush it on, youcan put it on with it.
Tank sprayer is the easiest way.Just kind of lightly spray it, don't
let it puddle. Uh last threeto five years. So Masonry Defender,
driveway and sidewalk seiler. If youwanted one that had a little bit of
sheen to it, there is aquick creat product called Cure Seal ce ure

(07:04):
E Seal Cure Seal. It isa breathable latex sealer and it has a
little bit of a sheen to it. Some people like that. So those
are the two I would recommend, depending on if you want to see it
or don't want to see it.Okay, then also is that also five

(07:26):
years. It's about three to five. Yeah, you're all about three to
five, unless you happen to bein a really really total sunny southwest sun
maybe hitting an apron of a driveway, and then I'd probably keep it at
three. But if the rest ofit's you know, normal conditions, little
shed, little sun, yeah, three to five, and then you you

(07:50):
you actually recommend pressure washing it first. Yeah, you got to get as
clean as you can, that's forsure. That's the way you're going to
get the pen petration. They're bothpenetrating sealers. So in concrete, even
though it's very hard, there's alot of capillaries, and those sealers migrate
in those capillaries and that's what createsthe seal. It's actually below the surface,

(08:13):
right below the surface. So agood clean, dry surface is required.
So yeah, pressure washer, don'tget too aggressive with it. You
certainly don't need to do that. You know, twenty four hundred psi down
to two thousand somewhere in there willadequately clean that and then seal it.

(08:33):
You could, you know, ifit's just blackish, mildewy and all that,
you could use a wet and forgetproduct or something along nose lines to
clean it or the pressure washer eitherway, okay, so I wouldn't have
to use the I wouldn't have totake what do you call it off?

(08:54):
The black self off there and ifI pressure wash it right, pressure wash
it the black stuff you mean themold the milldew that, yeah, the
mold and mildew. Well, thepressure washer will probably take that off,
okay, okay, And that's whywe're doing it, so you know,
and then we're sealing it, sowe're minimizing regrowth. It's still going to

(09:20):
come back, but we're minimizing itbecause it's sealed. They can't. It'll
drive faster because there it won't bedown into the pores of the concrete.
Okay, all right. Then,Oh and I got one of their uh
question. I I tried to getyou know, so long oil spots off

(09:41):
and I've used that stuff, youknow, it's on mine at act uh
huh, and some of them Istill couldn't get off. So I I
ran into something I tried, uhturt waxed bug and TI remover. Oh
okay, and that stuff seems totake that oil off. Yeah, it

(10:03):
takes it off. After I usedthat act. It takes it off the
best that I can find. Didyou have to did you have to scrub
it a lot? Or well, yeah, you'd have to have to use
that act. I tried that severaltimes. It wouldn't work. That's the
only time I've had problem with it. It's when like a fed extruck came
in there and drip dripped some kindof oil on there, and that oil

(10:26):
I just could not get off anythingI did. I don't know what that
was. But I finally, afterworking out a while and using that bar
at that tar, remover it.Finally. You know, it didn't take
it all out, but it tookit down to where you almost couldn't see
it anymore. Yeah, I wonderif it's being liquefied with that bug in
tar. I know that, youknow, kind of a totally different product.

(10:48):
I wonder I'm just thicking out loudputting that on there and then putting
the act over that, whether thatwould have you know, saved your from
you You might? You might youright there. I did not try that.
Yeah, of course I thought thatact was going to do it.
You know. Yeah, I've donealmost every oil spill I had, but
that was that came off of that. It said heavy duty oil. Oh

(11:13):
man, well good to hear, very good. Thank you much for the
call. I appreciate it. Youbet take care, bump bye, all

that. A lot of good informationthere, along with each hour of today's
show and tomorrow show will be alsoavailable via podcast. All right, let's
go to John. John Welcome,Hey, thanks Scary, Okay, I'll
get right here. I've got ait's my in law's garage. They've been
in the house forty years. Sothe garage was block built cement block.

(15:13):
My father and law used to bebuild bridges. So he's got a four
inch with about a three inch overhangroof that's made of cement. Okay,
so it's it's it's about I wouldsay, I guess it's probably fifteen by
twenty. So my problem is we'reforty years in. They cannot do anything,

(15:35):
and I'm afraid we've gotten a lotof water damage to the outside of
the brick block and to the topof the cement roof. So my question
is is that okay? And Iguess you is it spawling where it's like
the block is like peeling off.I went in and I painted it a

(15:58):
couple of years ago with that sandpaint or whatever it was. But anyway,
but I've noticed I've got to dosomething with it because I'm afraid we're
gonna lose the garage. But Idon't know. I don't even know where
to begin on how to resurface that, or I don't even know what to
do really, So describe to mewhat a cement roof looks like. So

(16:19):
you got a block, is thatthat's the sides of the garage right,
correct? A four inch it's probablya four or five inch slab of concrete
on top of that. So it'sa flat roof on top of that,
yes, sir, okay and okay, and this is on a garage correct,

(16:41):
correct? Okay. So I'm goingto make an analogy. Tell me
if I'm in the right track. So it's it's kind of like a chimney
with the crown wash. The chimneyhas the bricks going up. Then it
has a concrete pad sitting on topof that. Correct, it's not Yeah,
but it's not bridge though, it'scement block right right, I understand.

(17:03):
So then okay, so I gotthe picture. Now, so where
are where's the what are you tryingto refinish? Then? What are you
trying to patch? Okay, there'sa lot of Uh, it's kind of
like deep pits on the cement blockon the block on the block because they

(17:25):
had they had a down spout,uh that emptied onto it for years and
then and then I want to sealthe roof somehow, uh and get it
level and seal it because I've gotwater. I'm afraid there's you know,
I need to do all of it, just to kind of so it doesn't
get any words. Okay, sohave you looked at any roof roof ceilers,

(17:51):
roof coatings. It's like snow roofand different products along those lines,
which our uh, rubberized membranes thatare you know, painted over concrete roofs
or even shingled roofs. They makethem in like a five, seven,
and ten year warranty. And topatching would be done on a vertical surface,

(18:18):
you would use like a mortar.Quick Crete makes like a zip it
mortar. It's a mortar that hasa bonding agent in it where you can
patch the block. And I don'tknow how deep you have to go,
but this is for a vertical andoverhead patches. So zip it mortar on
the sides, make those patches andthen maybe use like a dry lock waterproofing

(18:44):
paint over the surface of that tominimize water penetration, and then work on
the top. If it's you know, since it's horizontal, you could use
like a vinyl concrete patcher there hasa bonding agent in it's for horizontal surfaces.
And then at that point in termsof waterproofing, you know, I

(19:06):
mean, I don't know if youneed a rubber rized coating on that,
or you just need a good sealanton there. Well, I forgot to
tell you this. The roof ofthe garage also acts as a patio.
I forgot to move. It's abig thing. Okay, So we can't
use that rubber ized So you wouldjust look at a sealant at that point.

(19:29):
Again, you would need that breathablesealant that we talked about. And
if you have another question on that, why don't you stay on hold here
and we'll get you on the otherside of the break. You're at home

Responsible solutions dot com. Well.I've been talking about Zalar pumps for years
now being the gold standard and somepumps and battery backup systems. The sump

(21:21):
pump is the heart of your groundwaterprotection system and Zala is the only name
I'd trust to keep my basement dry. The Zalar Model sixty three primary sump

(21:45):
Looking for a simple way to cleanyour outdoor surfaces. You need wet and
forget the bleach free cleaner. That'schanged the way we tackle ugly black and
green stains. There's no need forscrubbing. Simply apply wet and forget and
let nature do the rest. Sayfor all outdoors, serfacephices, decks,
roofs, siding and walkways offering longlasting results and saving you time and effort.

(22:06):
If you want your home six tierto look its best with minimal effort,
pick up a bottle wet and forgettoday at Low's, Walmart, Minards
or Ace Hardware. All right, back at it we go thirty three minutes

(22:36):
after the top of the are atHome with Gary Sullivan taking your calls regarding
your home projects. All right,John, let's go back and kind of
revisit a couple of things, becausewhen you threw the patio on me,
that's kind of changing a bunch ofthings. So for all your vertical and
horizontal or vertical and overhead patching, the zip it mortar, we discuss it's

(23:00):
a bonding agent with a mortar cancreate your patches. So we're fine there
on the surface of the concrete roof. The spawling, I'm guessing it's not
any deeper than three aces of aninch. Yeah, yeah, okay.
So there's two products you could use. One is the vinyl concrete patcher,

(23:22):
which is a quick creete product. It's a samentatious product that has a bonding
agent in it, same stuff youwould patch your driveway, your sidewalks.
Matching it to the color of theconcrete could be a challenge. They do
sell dyes where you can add alittle color to it, so that's one
option. The other option is adish coating product, which is non sementatious.

(23:48):
It's a high acrylic resin patch comesin a standard gray. It's pre
mixed and it's not sementatious, andyou know, it kind of blends in,
but all concretes different colors, soit may not blend in exactly.
Probably lasts longer than the other. That's an option also. Now those are

(24:11):
for the patches before we get in, and this concrete roof serves as a
patio too, so we can't puta rubberized membrane on there. So normally,
the way a concrete roof would besealed is you would prime that,
you would put a rubberized membrane overthat, like a bitumi, and that
would be your roof. But wegot this thing functioning as a terrace or

(24:37):
a patio also, so we can'tuse that. So we're going to use
a regular type of concrete sealer onthere. But the question I have is
where are the leaks coming from? And are we sure that's where the leaks
are coming from. Most of theleaks have a it doesn't have a roof

(25:00):
over it all. I mean itcomes directly, it hits the patio and
then it just kind of rolls overthe edge of it, and then it
just kind of back flows. Ithits the concrete and then right in the
middle of that roof they have adown spout that they have the way the
house is designed, there's no reallyno other place that they could put it,

(25:22):
and so that's kind of where allthe water's coming from. But there's
still concrete there and there is adown spout. So is the down spout
leaking is at the edge around thedown spout compromised or well, yeah,
it's it's it is. It isliterally it's two inches onto the concrete and

(25:47):
yeah, it is just I meanit empties onto the top of the roof
of the concrete. Yeah, makingany sense. Well, I just want
to make sure what I'm telling youis going to stop that leak. I'm
focusing on make taken out the imperfections, you know with that uh vinyl concrete
patcher. And if there's a dipthere or something, you know, that's

(26:12):
you know, where it's funneling allthat water and then maybe it's getting between
the wall and the concrete roof thatcould you know, you're gonna have to
make sure that's tightly cocked, probablywith like a eure thane calking to make
sure that we don't get any overflowbetween the two pieces. It's yeah,
and that's what the mainly it isleaking at is is right on that loong

(26:34):
the edges, whether where the leads. Okay, okay, So what I
would do there is again a eurethane calking along those edges, make sure
we get that sealed up real good. And then really for the rest of
the slab, it's you know,it's funneling the water away to that down
spout, so it's not ponding there. Correct, correct, all right,

(26:59):
So in that case, I wouldjust use your regular concrete seiler. There's
a bunch of them out there. You could use the dry lock clear,
which would be a waterproofing product onthe surface of that, or you could
use even is it a real smoothconcrete up there, Yes, yes,

(27:25):
Okay, So there are like ifyou went to a roofing supply place,
there is numerous concrete tile seilers thatare acrylics. You could use one of
those that are actually intended for concreteroofing. I'd probably recommend you do that.
I don't have a name at thetop of my head, but that's
probably what I would use. Iwould have like a driveway sidewalk seiler give

(27:49):
you about two to three years worthof life. But I think i'd rather
use something that's designed to be usedon concrete tiles, and it could be
waked, okay, and I thinkwhat I'm called like kre x or something
along those lines. But there's awhole category of ceilings for concrete roofs.

(28:14):
And it's not like a spongy Imean, it builds into the concrete and
you know, provides the benefits. And then again ceiling around the whole area
with a eurethane will give you goodelasticity, good UV blocking, and then
waterproofing that block foundation with the drylock. I think you'd be good to

(28:36):
go. Oh, Gary, thankyou so much. And I appreciate your
time, and I appreciate the otherlisteners. Just very good. Thank you
much. I appreciate take care allright, at least I'll get you going
right, I mean, that'll getyou going. Bill welcome, Yes,
Gary, how are you doing well? Thank you? Yeah. My question
to you is in the country, have a well that supplies the water to

(29:03):
my residence, and I've got therotten egg smell I guess is the common
term, but kind of might likemaybe a hydrogen sulf I guessed right.
I noticed it on the hot sideand the coal side of the faucets.
It's in all the things in thehouse, in the shower, in the
stools. Do you have any ideasit could? You know, it could

(29:26):
probably be you know several things, but the two that come to mind right
away is it might be time tochlorinate the well and have that water tested,
just to see what mental content wehave in it. And maybe we
need an additional filter. Maybe thechlorination of the well will be good enough.

(29:48):
That would be done with, youknow, the well company itself.
The other thing is depending on hasanything changed new water heater, old water
heater. We didn't do anything thewell. We have done something with a
well, A new water heater putin less than a year ago, and

(30:11):
it seemed to make the odor moremore noticeable after the new water heater was
put in installed, And I didhave a whole house water filter put in
into the house at the same time, so but it didn't help these Okay,
okay, all right, So mymy, my preaching with the wells

(30:38):
category one, category two, whichI think it's probably going to fall into.
But I think you probably ought totake a look at both the water
heater the way they're designed. There'sa sacrificial rod that is into the water
heater to minimize corrogaion of the waterheater itself. There's a strip, it's

(31:04):
called it a node rod, an ode and an odor anode rod.
The anode rod is magnesium. Itreacts with other metals and creates that sulfur
smell. If eventually it'll eat thatrod away. My guess is the old

(31:26):
water heater there either wasn't a rodin there or it was already eaten away.
You put a new water heater in, it starts that reaction after a
while creates that smell, and thatthat rod can be pulled out. You
can access it through the top.You can google and see where it is

(31:47):
and it you can if you pullit out the warrant he's gone because that's
the sacrificial rod that minimizes the corrosionon the tank. But they also make
a eNode rod in aluminum, andusually switching out the type of rod will
eliminate the smell. Okay, ifI don't replace the rod, if I

(32:12):
just say cut it off, isthat acceptable too? I mean, well,
yeah, it's kind of a protectiondevice. I mean if you pull
what you can do is you canpull out that rod and run it without
that rod. See if the smellgoes away. Okay, sure, and
then you can either replace it withan aluminum one, which is still a
sacrificial rod, but it probably won'tcreate that gas. All right, very

(32:37):
good, Okay, a couple ofthings there to try and sure, I
appreciate your help on that, andthank you for taking my call. You're
quite welcome. Take care bill allright. If you'd like to join us,

You're at home with Gary Salivent takingyour calls for running your home projects.
We're about twelve minutes from the topof the hour and Pat welcome. Yes,
I've got a question today. Mydaughter is having trouble with house flies.
She's had them for over a month. She uses the fly strips and
that does catch them, but itdoesn't get rid of them permanently, and

(36:07):
she can't use a spray because ofpats and a toddler. Do you have
any ideas well? I guess thefirst question is is how are they getting
in the house. That's what wewant to know. Yeah, okay,
so you can't figure that part outright? No, Well, well there's
two types. I think you've probablyheard me talk about a product called Rescue.

(36:35):
In fact, if you've ever donepodcast, I encourage you to get
on the iHeart app put in atHome with Gary Sullivan and go back to
last weekend. I think it wasthe last Sunday, and we had a
person on from Rescue and our wholeconversation was based on flies indoors, outdoor

(36:58):
flies and take a list of that. There's a lot of good information and
the ALYSSA recommended a couple of products. We didn't really talk about sealing up
the house, but that's kind ofin a way the bottom line. But
if you can't figure out or youhaven't sealed up the house, there are

(37:20):
some fly traps for the outside thatattract the flies, So you would put
it in on the west side ofthe house. She says, they notice
them outside, right, So whatI would And is there a basement window
or something there or windows? Alwayschecked the okay, always check around the

(37:44):
windows, calking missing or something alongthose lines, or if the windows are
open, torn screen, something alongthose lines. But if you go outside,
get one of these traps. Again. The website's rescue dot com.
Take a listen to that podgett re fcue correct dot com and there is
fly traps with an attracting and alittle bag that attaches to it. Now

(38:09):
for people listening and say, oh, I'll use that outside right next to
the picnic table. There is alittle bit of an odor to it,
so you want to you know,if you're going to put it and get
rid of flies for your picnic, you want to put about fifteen twenty feet
away from the table. Okay, okay for your windows that the windows are
cleaned and are closed and the airconditioners on, you can put it right

(38:30):
there. If it's on the sideof the house or something, it will
attract the flies to the tape ratherthan attracting them to get into your house.
Okay, can you buy at Lowsor anyplace down I've seen them at
late Ace Hardware. They've got quitea few rescue traps. That's why I
say go either listen to the podcastor go online and get the names of

(38:52):
the traps. And then they alsohave like a fly sponge for indoors which
hasn't attracted without an odor, andit's kind of a glue trap, kind
of like the old fly tapes, but it's kind of in a sponge form.
It can go on a ceiling,it can go on a wall,
it can go all over the place. So you might want to get one

(39:13):
of those for the inside, ora couple of them for the inside,
and then get the one for theoutside. See if we can get them
from the source which is outside, which is always ideal, and then have
and let's take care of the onesthat are on the inside and not Also
when I was doing that, Iwould really just examine that area. Doors,
windows, you know, just tryand figure out where you can you

(39:38):
know, where they're coming in from, and they're not always coming in from
that window because there's all these differentvarieties of flies and a lot of them
are attracted to light, so theygo to a window and they're coming in
somewhere else. So, you know, just kind of examining your home to
make it as tide as you canis always key. But the traps will

(39:59):
certainly eliminate your problem. Okay,And that podcast, what did you say
it was? So it's it's ourpodcast. It's at Home with Gary Sullivan.
It's Last Sunday, and it'll saysomething titled on you know, we
have an expert that's going to talkabout getting rid of flies or something along
those lines. I don't know howthey titled it. Go the iHeart App,

(41:30):
Valley water and actually it ended upbeing the dual tanks, you know,
like the two water tanks. Okay, actually the screens that were in the
head on that right, Okay,And honestly, like if it fixed the
whole problem. So if if he'slistening still and that broad situation does not

(41:51):
work, it might be that itwas very simple. They came right out,
changed it out, and everything wasgood after that. So so was
did they tell you? I'm ait's a problem with the dual tanks?
Is that what you say? Yeah, there's the there's like the the head
on top. It's like the electricalunit above the dual tanks, right,
the little screens in there there arecompletely really bad gums up rusted out.

(42:17):
I bought my house three years ago. My house is from the fifties.
I'm not sure where the previous ownerput a new system in, but they
wanted Hunting Valley water and uh thenjust they're like two little cone shaped filters
they're on that power head for thewater, right. I mean it changes
out and took care of everything becauseI dealt with that problem for multiple months

(42:37):
and driving me nuts. Yeah, well, you never know his water,
his water was about a year oldand uh he's on well water. Uh,
but you know, all those littletips up. Maybe maybe that is
it. I'm not the tiniest ficksever, I think, yeah, you

the field. There's always especially inplumbing, I think more so than any

other field. There's like a there'sso many variables in it, you know,
like I used to talk about theanode rod a lot and then well
now you got it. Well, well, what kind of shape is the
water in a well? Is thewater been chlorinade lately? You go through
that whole thing because those can beissues also, so very good. I

(43:46):
