Speaker 1 (00:33):
Eight hundred and eight two three eight two five five.
Good morning. I am Ron Wilson, your personal yard boy,
talking about yarning on this Saturday after Thanksgiving. I hope
you had a great Thanksgiving. The guy across from me
has a big smile on his face. I still think
it's a little bit of gravy maybe in your side
birds there on the left hand side, it's still there. Yeah,
I haven't showered Thursday. Great executive producer, it's a Joe Stricker.
(00:59):
Let's find out what's going on in our website at
Ron Wilson online dot com, facebook page, in the Garden
with Ron Wilson, and of course Joe's personal life, including
what did happen on Thanksgiving Day at the Striker Household.
Good morning, sir, Good morning. How was your Turkey Day?
Turkey Day was good. It was pretty laid back, pretty easy.
I liked it. I liked mine too. Got most of
(01:20):
the stuff done early and then we had to make
a little stuffing on dressing on Thursday. Did you do
the white castle dressing? I did not. You know what
I have to drive now about twenty miles to find
a white castle. You can't just go to your I
could go to Kroger get the frozen things. It's not
(01:41):
the same. It's not the same. Yeah. Yeah, I've never
had this. I've had some folks that said they weren't
too bad, but no, I did not do that, so unfortunately.
But yeah, four grandsons, and they're all getting older now,
so it's not quite as crazy anymore. Yeah, it's fun though.
Oh yeah. The youngest one's first grade, second grade, so
(02:03):
he's still kind of nutsy and they still kind of
get you know. But the oldest one, Callen now is
a teenager.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
So yeah, can you believe that? Well, look at your
two daughters. What are you talking about? Wow? Yeah, that's true.
So yeah, so, you know, just both sides of the family.
And it was a good time, good good got home early,
didn't stay out late. Fall, fall asleep around six or
seven because of the Turkey. No, I didn't. We were there,
so I stayed awake, came home about eight thirty, and
(02:32):
then fell asleep. Started to try to watch football, but
I fell asleep, So that's okay.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
I let's see we uh we we had dinner and
kind of watched a little football, and then after that
we had a little.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
Dessert and Uh, so what do you guys have for dessert?
Mom makes dessert?
Speaker 4 (02:49):
Like?
Speaker 1 (02:49):
What does mom make? Because I asked him if you
had German potatoes out and you said no, no on
Thanksgiving potato saladot? Why not? Who to say you can't
have German potato salad on Thanksgiving? Well my mom for one,
Well then that means we don't have it on Thanksgiving.
But I mean to me, that sounds good. It'd be
a great, great side, little side.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
She didn't make potatoes holts, Okay, she made she made
a pumpkin roll some scrudletrud.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
She still call you strudlehead. No, okay, what are you
talking about, little Joey, my little my little strudle head. Uh?
And uh and some and my niece city with your
wood in her wooden spoon. Oh I know that.
Speaker 3 (03:37):
I know the wooden spoon very very very well. But
my niece made punkin pie. But I'm not a big
punkin pie either.
Speaker 1 (03:44):
So me neither. So Yeah, didn't used to have a
T shirt that I survived the wooden spoon.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Uh, it doesn't fit anymore, but yeah, I've had that.
I had that since I was like sixth grade. I
forgot to wear my Thanksgiving shirt. I was gonna wear
my Thanksgiving shirt today.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
What was that? Huh?
Speaker 3 (04:04):
What's then today? Because you know you've never seen my
Thanksgiving I was gonna wear it. It said I survived
the w k r P turkey turkey drop. I saw
it on I saw it on Amazon. I was like,
that's gotta be mine. So and so it became yours.
It became mine. Yes, and it was pretty inexpensive too,
(04:26):
So go on Amazon and look for it.
Speaker 1 (04:27):
It's pretty cool. I saw some lady dropping turkeys frozen
turkeys in Alaska. Yeah, the people that were way out
in the middle of nowhere.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
We used to do that, remember a long time ago,
when we start a helicopter, we used to do that.
When we've changed letters back to w kr SE. We
did that for like two or three straight Thanksgivings in
a row. We did a turkey drop at the racetrack.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Yeah, that's ryan. I forgot about it.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Did it like two or three years in a row,
and just as like commemorate that. Yeah, and then I
guess it became a liability to the frozen turkey.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
I don't know. I remember.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
I remember they had numbers on them and the the
the pilot or the traffic guy had to throw the
turkeys out and hit a target and whoever's number got
close to target, you won.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Whatever it was, I don't remember. I know it was
Chuck Ingram involved. No, this is before Chuck pre Chuck.
All right, so this was did helicopter stuff.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Yeah, but this was like ninety seven, ninety eight, ninety nine,
so it was the original traffic guy I did that.
So yeah, cool, we don't do that anymore.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
So much liability, I was gonna say, the liabilities of that.
So so anyway, Yeah, Turkey Day was great, and both
the girls there. Both the girls were there. They stay
home all day? Are they out and about?
Speaker 3 (05:51):
No, they were pretty much there all day and around
I no know, seven eight o'clock they went and hung
out with some friends. And I got the I got
the call about seven thirty eight o'clock wanting to know
why none of the restaurants were open.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
Because it's Thanksgiving, because it's Thanksgiving and everybody wants to
spend time with their family, and and.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Grace was like, yeah, but it's like Thanksgiving, it's like
eight o'clock. I'm like, honey, you work at skyline.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Are you over? Are you off? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Well what do you think? And there you have it? So, yeah,
I don't know. That's my little scientist watch out. Yeah,
what she's starting to focus on. She's gonna end up
being a biology. She's trying to get a job at
Cincinnati Zoo at least in turn. Next she's gonna try
to intern next spring. So we may have to call
(06:50):
in a favor, mister goldfinger. Yes, yeah, we may have
to point your gold finger for us, and we may
have to call in a favor. Soues. She has to
get her co op done before she graduates, and she's
a senior next next spring.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Do you have to do anything specific? Or she's just got
a volunteer there, she's just got a well it's a
co op, so so you would get she's gotta be
it has to she has to do something with her field.
So if she can just get in the door and
get that done, she's supposed to do it for a
whole semester. So that's what six eight weeks. There is
(07:26):
the thing where they save the rare seeds work. I
have no idea. It all depends on I guess it
would all depend on her curriculum. I just know that
she's been trying to She's she tried to get into
the aquarium and that didn't happen. Now she's like trying
to sensani zoo.
Speaker 3 (07:46):
So they have to call in a face a gold finger.
I promise I won't make fun of you on the
air anymore.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
Yeah, yeah right, I promised you aunt ever saying bad
about you ever again? Yeah right. So yeah, he likes that,
I'm sure he does. He does. He likes the attention
because then people, Yeah, people say, come up to him
later and say, I heard him getting on you today
about the gold finger yep, and the green eminem's yep,
(08:15):
and the doritos and those ice waters and that was
the legit. Yeah that wasn't That wasn't a joke a story. Yeah,
the ice waters. I'll take a black what Okay, Yes, sir,
I have that ready for you. So is it abbreviated
show today or are we going full boar? It's full boar?
(08:36):
Who do we got on show today? I have no
idea awesome m shipman from Kidsgardening Dot Orgol is going
to be on with us. We've got Monica Brewbaker and
bar By, but that sure.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
It's diarrhea b diarrhea time, diarrhea bird flu uh and kids. Yeah,
there you go, and then Sully later or no.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
Oh absolutely, there you go. Yeah, and then no pack,
No buggy Joe, No buggy Joe. But yeah, we got
stuff going on. But Joe better well beg it, buddy, Buddy,
Joe better be watching the football man. I'm I'm pretty
sure he will be. And then I got I got
emails or text messages this week from the Three Stingers
and they all singers. They have Barb and Teresa and
(09:24):
uh and ye Nina and Bagley and they all have
cherry Bounce for you. Oh awesome. When are they going
to start your podcast? I don't know. They said we're
going to do something. They should. Well, they're not together there,
there aren't They all retired now? No that no, Well,
(09:44):
I think they've all concentrated on the bees. Yeah they should.
They should be hot. And I know somebody that could
produce that for them. Possibly, I don't know. I wonder
who that could be. Hm, hm hmm. You don't know. So.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
The website is Ron Wilson online dot com, including the
Facebook page in the Garden with Ron Wilson and the
chat room is rocking and roll. Hopefully there's people awake,
and I'm not still in a Turkey Turkey comas today,
so uh yeah, hopefully people are out and about. I'm
sure our listeners, our gardeners are, they're rocking and rolling already.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
I came down here yesterday and I had to do
a couple of things real quick. Yeah, I could not believe.
And I came down early because it was about quarrel
to eight. The Kenwood Town Center across the street, Yeah,
was packed, really and the line to get in there
was a mile off down the exit. So much for
(10:38):
people buying stuff on Amazon. Yeah, a quarter all e
That kind of really surprised me. Wow, I thought Black
Friday was more in that Monday.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
Priber Monday, but over the last five or six years
it's suspen. It was packed, But you know what, I
talked to a couple of people that have gone and
just to walk and they said they went just to
walk it because they haven't done it in so long
and walked through a mall so long that they decided
to just go and just experience it because you haven't
experience because they're all closing That's what I'm saying. You know,
(11:06):
nobody goes to the mall. They do, but you don't
go as often as you used to. I mean that
was a big thing Christmas. You were probably in them
all at least two or three times. Yeah, enjoying all the
music and what was going on in Santa, all the decorations.
Now you don't do that, And so a lot of
folks I've talked to said, you know, I'm doing this
just because we just felt like walking it.
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Wow. Great, got to get back in the spirit again. Yep.
So I said, good for you. That's a great idea.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
That's a good idea. And ye, out of buye a
few things too, right, right? You know what else would
get you in the spirit if you had to cut
Christmas tree?
Speaker 1 (11:37):
Really? Yeah? I think so?
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Possibly. Okay, So the website is which already saying I'm
not going to bring that up during the Cup of Joe. Okay, website.
Did you ask me what that was again? Ron Wilson
online dot com. Yes, and Rita has a gift yes,
that you can make if you're if you decided to
make gifts for people for Christmas.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
He does a great there's you know, like little jars
of things and salts and all that stuff. So it's great.
It's your annual classic Britle recipe. Yeah. Oh the peanut
brot yeah yeah, yeah good. And I don't like brittle,
but that's that's but. But if you have a nut allergy,
I'm sorry, I'm not gonna work for you.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
Yeah, it's not. It's totally totally nuts. So yeah, and
the the plan of the week, yes, uhs, no, it's not.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Why not, because why not? It's not it's not. What
was it? We did it already? Okay, then what is it?
Pan set?
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Then I have the date wrong on my on my articles,
so I gotta I gotta fix that.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
I gotta fix. I gotta fix up before I leave.
Remember we did Amrose about three weeks ago. Some people
would get started with their putty, right, that's right. I
have the date wrong, and I'll fix up before I leave. Okay,
I didn't even look. I trust you.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
Well, hey, I I make one mistake in twenty five years,
it's been two. Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's been to remember.
I can't remember that. The other was a long time ago. Well,
the other one was, you know, getting doctor Z involved
in the show. I was going to say, agreed in
having doctor Z work the show.
Speaker 1 (13:23):
So yeah, that was another big mistake. I hope he
scratching his head right now, what guy, why you always
get on me? I hope his girlfriends sitching her fingers
because it's fun. That's why, doctor, because it's fun. Yeah.
So well I asked him if you want to be
on with us this morning. He said no. He didn't respond.
That's his nose. He doesn't respond. So I said, he
(13:43):
was talking about you're going to do the you know,
the Thanksgiving showing on. I said, well, yeah, we're gonna
keep going. I said, I want to go down and
do you know Joe's going to come in, and if
you want to come in early, you come in during
a cup of Joe and he just blank no. So
I didn't hear from all. Right. Well fine, so ALL
said you could be part of the show and he said,
(14:04):
I don't want to take anything away from in your guests.
I said, well, then come in during a cup of Joe.
You're taking away anything anything away from me? I said,
he would love it. Yeah, probably a couple of Joe
would turn into an hour on the show, and.
Speaker 3 (14:17):
Then we just do five segments. So all right, well,
I gotta speaking of that, I gotta head on out
and all right, well, first I'll fix the the website
before I leave, and then I'll have to head on
out once and get ready to go and watch the game.
Speaker 1 (14:31):
Today with the amer also on there too, if you
want good timing for that too. Refresher all I gotta say, ish, I, oh,
let's go. You got it. What do you think they're
gonna do?
Speaker 3 (14:42):
They're gonna win by ninety seven? Okay, I got the
over all, right, Joe Zachar Strecker our executive producer. If
you like, we see it on our website, Rob Wilson
online dot com, Facebook page, Ron Wilson in the garden
with Ron Wilson.
Speaker 1 (14:58):
I'll get it together. They have an a cup of
call here. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (15:01):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
If you like what you see, Joe Strucker had everything
to do with it. Something in there you don't like,
your question you're not sure about, don't blame Joe. Joe
Strecker blamed doctor Z. Blame doctor Z. Guard eighty three, Washington,

three eight two five five to Matt we go.

Good morning, Matt, Hey, Ron, thanks for taking my call.
I love your show. I look forward every Saturday.
Speaker 1 (19:13):
Thank you.
Speaker 6 (19:13):
Yeah. Question, I always call them hens and chicks. So
I have a decorative pot you would that's got the
holes in the side, right, Okay, And I'm wondering my
(19:34):
shop usually stays about fifty five to sixty degrees. Should
I leave them outside or should I bring them in?
Speaker 1 (19:42):
Now You're gonna have to do something to protect those. Now.
I'm assuming that the hens and checks you have planted
in that are the heartier selections, which means all over
winter outside, but when they're above ground like that twofold
can happen. One you've got to make sure you keep
some moisture in that in the soil over the wintertime,
just lightly. And secondly, when they're above ground and you
(20:04):
get really cold temperatures, that could do a number on
a lot of the hair roots and rooting system inside.
It just freezes them and next thing you know, they
turned the mush. I've seen them over winter sitting out,
you know, up close to the foundation or whatever. But
you need to do something with a Matt. Give me
a favor. Hang on, all right, We're gonna take a break.
We come back. I'll continue talking with you about those
(20:25):
hens and chicks Dick from dating. You're coming up after Matt.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
Talking to Ardening at eight hundred eight two three eight
two five five, good morning, I am Ron Wilson, your
personal yard boy. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. We are,
of course Thanksgiving in uh We're across the street from
the Kenwoock Town Center here in the Cincinnati area. Man,
they are. They were swamped yesterday. They're already lined up
out there to to get in again today. And I
(23:11):
saw him interviewing a lot of folks yesterday said that
they were actually ordering online but went to the malls
just to experience the ambiance, the celebrate, you know, the
Christmas celebration, the decorations and all. That's one of the
few malls in our I think left in our area. Yeah,
and they still do a nice job. Yeah, all hostivities
and events, so you know, people still getting out and
(23:31):
enjoying that, and that's a good thing to see. But
lady was saying, yeah, I'm shopping and I'm ordering online
at the same time. Crazy. Back to Matt in Ohio.
We were talking about his Hens and Chicks in that
Hens and Chicks crock pot. Is it a clay one,
by the way, No, it's plastic, okay, because a lot
of times those those clay ones, those terra clay spots,
(23:55):
they have a tention to freeze and crack over the wintertime,
and that's the other thing about leaving them sit outside,
as the fact that they can do that and fall
apart kind of disintegrate. The plastic ones sometimes seem to
hang in there a little bit better, so you should
be good there. But anyway, hens and chicks, for the
most part, if through the hardy selections are really tough,
and many of them are hardy like to zones four,
(24:18):
so they really take cold temperatures. But again trying to
protect them just a little bit. So if you leave
it outside, if you can nestle it in a little
bit next to the foundation of the house, maybe put
a few leaves up around it, maybe watered about once
a month over the wintertime, just to make sure it's
got a little bit of moisture in the soil. Should
be good to go. We've got this three tiered thing
(24:39):
in our patio. It's my wife's and she puts new
hens and chicks in it all the time, break take
some in and taking some out. We don't do anything
to it, and it's got it's just literally three tiered
and it's lined with a sheet loss and potting soil
and those things all over win are just sitting there
above ground, and I do water it every now and
in to make sure it's got moisture. But they're that tough.
(25:01):
But we'll also bring some in the house and use
them as a houseplant. We'll also put some you can
put them in an uneated garage or shed as long
as it has light. So it's got to have a
little bit of light there for you. And they do
well in a fifty degree situation as well, so you
got multiple opportunities as far as overwintering.
Speaker 6 (25:21):
Yeah, they they ever since I planned the them. It's
amazing how the other sprouts come out. They have done,
they have sprouted new ones.
Speaker 1 (25:34):
They're fun to watch, aren't they. And yeah, I mean
all of a sudden you get a sprout that comes out,
and all of a sudden you get this thing that
comes out, and it's a flower, and it's a goofyest looking,
you know, stem, and then all of a sudden there's
this flower on the top. And of course bees absolutely
love them. But all so many different types of see
them available today. And of course one of the things
(25:55):
we kind of forwarned folks about is to remember there
are hardy varieties and there are not hardy varieties, and
hopefully your local garden center keeps them separated because I've
had a lot of folks that'll take some of the
non hardy varieties. Put them outside and they'll make it
over the winter time. But they're pretty darn tough, I
tell you what.
Speaker 6 (26:12):
Okay, So bringing them in my shop where it's like
sixty five degrees it is not a bad idea as
long as they have light.
Speaker 1 (26:21):
Got to have the light, that's the big thing. And
the thing about sixty five degrees, they may continue to grow.
You get into the fifty degrees forty five degrees, they
will shut down and pretty much sit there for you.
Sixty five degrees you may still see a little shoot
come out every now and then, or a flower pop
up here and there.
Speaker 6 (26:42):
And just water them about once a month to keep
the soil there.
Speaker 1 (26:46):
Yeah, just keep a little bit of moisture on the soil. Yeah,
and you should be good to go. Now when you
get to the If you decide to do that and
you get to the spring season, don't just take it
outside and just set it outside. You need to acclimate
it to go back. So you acclimated into the you know,
you take it outside, set it in a shadier area
for a week or so get it acclimated too that
(27:07):
full sun situation and then get it out into the sun,
but kind of, you know, reacclimated to being outside and
then you're good to go.
Speaker 6 (27:16):
Okay, sounds great.
Speaker 1 (27:17):
Thanks all right man, good talking to you. Appreciate it.
Dick from Dayton, good morning, Well, good morning. How are you?
I am good. Did you get enough turkey?
Speaker 8 (27:28):
Oh yeah, yeah, I went over to where my friend
is staying. They had Oh my gosh. It started at
one and then they had it at four again. There
was turkey, ham and mashed potato, had passed bone castalon
assed potatoes, and three cards of pie, which I've never
had with a bumbleberry pie.
Speaker 1 (27:49):

Talking Yardening at eight hundred eight two three eight two
five five Happy Thanksgiving weekend. I hope you had a
great Thanksgiving. We did got together with the family. Uh,
you know, what's everybody talking about eating too much? And
I used to do that. I don't know about you, Dan,
but I don't eat as much as I used to.
On Thanksgiving me neither. I do a nice little plateful
(34:37):
and maybe picking you know, later on, have a little
bit more correct later after it's all. Then the next day,
have a little more. And then the next day I
have a little bit. The next day have a little more.
But I but I don't stuff myself anymore. Does that
come with age? Wisdom? Is that what it is? Yes,
it's wisdom. Wow, I just don't. I try a little
(34:58):
bit of everything and it tastes all good, and i'm
and then I would, you know, a little bit later
try it again. So yeah, I don't. I don't stuff
myself anymore. And then I remember I used to to
me neither, But I do like that turkey. I don't
get why we don't eat turkey more often we do
at our house, I get a turkey breast all the time,
do it on the grill. I like turkey. As a
matter of fact, I like turkey better than chicken. But
(35:18):
UH not know why we don't eat turkey a lot more.
All around, it's good for you. I'm going to come
over to your house and eat chicken on the grill
or turkey on the grill. It's great. Chicken breast, turkey
breast on the grills outstanding. Talking about yarding at eight
hundred and eight two three eight two five five, also
talking about eating turkey. Shout out to Tim Dwyer. He's
a pickle guy. We've had Tim on our show a
couple of times talking about growing pickles and pickling pickles.
(35:41):
He's a he's a master at it. But he did
Rita's recipe last week for the bourbon Uh pumpkin pie
and a little bit of maple syrup, a little bit
of bourbon. What did he use? There? Can't tell with
the bottles that bullet, I can't tell then. Anyway, he said,
thanks for reading his recipe. M Not much bourbon flavor,
(36:04):
kind of like you thought, but good. If you remember
Joe was talking about he wanted more than the two
tablespoons of bourbon in there, and he said, you're right.
He probably put a little bit more in there. They
get a bit more flavor. But he said the recipe
was outstanding. So thank you Rina Hikingfel for all her
recipes are great, trust me, but that I'm not a
big pumpkin pie eater, but that pie looks pretty darn good.
(36:27):
So does the bottle of bourbon sitting behind it. So
thanks Tim for sending it in. Really appreciate It also
had somebody sending a picture last week. Oh I'm getting
good at this now, Folks sending in pictures like where
should I trim this? Where should I cut this branch off?
How should I correct this? Oh? Now I'm scanning the
pictures and then drawing on the picture and then sending
(36:49):
that back to the email. Anyway, somebody had a lemon
tree that they had grown from seed, I believe. And
you know, when you're growing from seed, a lot of
times they just grow straight up and sometimes you get
a couple of branches here and there. This thing had
grown up and was touching the ceiling and wanted to
(37:10):
know what can we do to make this thing work
to get a nice little head on it and all that.
And Meyer lemon, of course, probably one of the best
ones to grow if you're doing it inside, they do
an outstanding job. As a matter of fact, I also
had someone send me a picture of their Meyer lemon
that they had bought the spring, and that thing had jeez,
I bet it had six or eight lemons on it
(37:31):
that were starting to turn color. Plus a lot of
flowers which still do that, and you know you can
set those as well. Of course, the fragrance of those
flowers in the house absolutely wonderful. But the question becomes,
how do I prune these citrus plants for growing? You know,
take them inside and back outside, back inside. And the
deal is you want to prune them, and you're going
to be doing it forever. That's just the way it is.
(37:53):
You want to prune them to create a small tree,
in other words, a trunk up and a nice you know,
head on the topp of this thing. So as that
thing is growing, and avocados are the other way, they
just grow straight up. All of a sudden, this thing
is six feet talld. Now what do I do with it? Well,
then when you come back and say, well, here's what
you have to do. First thing we're going to do
is cut it off about thirty inches above the pot,
(38:16):
or maybe even closer, It's like, what yep, Because where
we cut that off is where the new branches begin
to form to the sides, to start to form that head.
So in this particular case, they had a couple branches
that come out lower, and the plant was kind of
leaning over a little bit. So anyway, I was able
(38:37):
to mark on here where to cut, what to do whatever,
And it doesn't take very long, but you it will
eventually start to form a nice head, so to speak,
lollipop kind of a look. And that's what you're trying
to do, get rid of the criss crossing branches, kind
of like pruning fruit trees. And you want to keep
it like that and let it continue to expand in
(38:59):
sote as your house allows. But you can also cut
it back to make it fit inside a smaller area.
But you know, again, if you're growing these things from
seed and all of a sudden they just shoot straight
up in the air, there is a point where you
want to take the top out of it to create
side branches, and then over time you will limb that
up and have side branches and create that little bit
(39:22):
ahead on the top. But they did, and they cut
it back and they took care of it, and I
think it's going to turn out to be really nice.
But I'll tell you what again, meer lemons for a
potted lemon tree that you can take outside in the summertime,
bring it back inside for the winter time, and back
outside and actually get production from it. I think that
one is one of the best ones that's out there
(39:43):
now this time of the year. If you can't find
them in your local garden centers or places that they
sell indoor plants, logis log E e S out of Connecticut.
Of course, they have quite a wide selection of citrus
trees that they get shipped there. They're smaller, but you
can get started with them, and they'll insulate it and
(40:05):
they'll ship it when the weather's right and all that
kind of stuff. But you can check with them as well.
But again point being is, if you have something like
this and you're not sure where to prune it, if
you send me a couple of pictures of it so
I can see all the branches. I've been able to
scan those mark on that picture, scan it back, and
then send it back to you and try to help
you out as much as I can to show you
(40:26):
where to do that. So keep that in mind over
the winter time. If you have questions like that, feel
free to email me and let me know. Also have
someone and we're gonna talk to Monica Brubaker coming up
to the top of the hour talking about feeding birds
and planting for birds. And I think you're seeing, you're
seeing a lot more information out there now as far
as landscaping for wildlife, especially for birds. And you know,
(40:48):
we really pushed the pollinator gardens, the butterfly gardens, which,
as Joe Buggs has appropriately said, butterfly gardens aren't just
for butterflies anymore. It's for all the dolliators that are
out there. And we're doing a really good job starting
to look at that, looking at the native plants, things
that are flowering from the beginning of the season to
(41:09):
the end of the season, you know, and again are
clean up practices at the end of the year, maybe
leaving some of that alone, with the seedheads alone, some
of those hollow stems alone, some of the perennials, leaving
it like that, so kind of you know, we used
to clean up everything so that it was all clean
and gone for the winter, now leaving some of that
there for the wildlife, and then cleaning up in late
(41:30):
spring as things start to live and back up again.
But planting for the birds now really starting to gain
a lot of momentum, and of course planting trees and
shrubs that burry. Of course, the perennials that have seed
heads on the top, protection, planting evergreens for protection. And
one thing that came up the other day was planting.
(41:52):
Somebody had asked me about the junipers. They said, you know,
it seems like this year a lot of our junipers,
whether they're the shrubs or the eastern red cedar like
you see growing in the native cedar large one really
heavily buried this year. Is there are reason for that?
And of course there's always been reasons that, you know,
weather conditions. We used to say maybe they were stressed
(42:15):
so they're trying to reproduce more or whatever. I don't
know that that's ever proved out, but it seems like
we've gotten a pretty nice, pretty nice production of berry
juniper berries this year in our area. And what's interesting
about juniper berries is that although there are some particular
birds that really enjoy them, a lot of birds they
(42:36):
don't eat them until the very end when there's just
a lot of them don't like the flavor and they
would just wait to the end and if that's all
they've got left to eat, they'll eat them. But they
do eat them. Lots of other wildlife will lead them
as well. I think bird wise, bluebirds, cedar, wax wings,
quail eats and eat will eat them, robins will eat them,
chicken to ease, grouse, and of course when it comes
(42:57):
to the critters, just about all all of them will
eat them somewhere down the road. And there's a few
insects that like them as well. But the cool thing
about juniper berries remember this junipers. There are male and
female plants, so you only get the berries on the females.
And the berries that you see on those female plants
aren't really berries at all. They're cones. It takes two
(43:20):
years for the cone to form into that wooden type
cone with the seeds. The berry part is to what
you see the first year, which is fleshy. The second
year becomes the hardened cone, so it's actually not a
berry at all. It's a part of the process of
forming a juniper cone or juniper seed with the berry.
(43:41):
And yes, the junipers seeds they are berries. Those are
what they use to flavor vodkas and other things as well.
Becoming more poor popular all the time. Top of the
hour after the break wild winged wonder Monica Brubaker here
in the garden with Ron Wilson, God gardening questions.
Speaker 2 (44:05):
Ron has the answers at one eight hundred eighty two
three Talk You're in the garden with Ron Wilson.
