Ron Wilson, your personal yard boy, talking about yardening on this Thanksgiving weekend.
Don't forget our website. It's RonWilson online dot com of course Facebook
(00:49):
page in the Garden with Ron Wilsonas well. It's been a star studded
show so far. We've had ourregulars that we listen to or hear from
throughout the entire season sharing their expertisewith us. And we're always so thankful
for all of them that do that. And as I promise, coming up
next. And by the way, during the break, I walked out and
looked at the window out the windowswe were on a six flour and I
looked at the ledges and they're justcovered with birds. It's amazing. When
(01:12):
this lady is on our show, all the windows are filled up with birds,
all looking at pecking on the windowstrying to get in. She is.
We call her the wild winged Wonder. You know who I'm talking about
from Wild Birds Unlimited, Monica Brubaker'sLook are those birds jumping up and down?
(01:34):
They're jumping up and flapping their wingsand it's crazy. It's amazing,
just amazing. Thank you, HappyThanksgiving, Happy Thanksgiving to you. I
understand that on Thanksgiving morning you dolike a Thanksgiving buffet around your yard with
bird seed. So they just lineup. They line up like a big
(01:55):
table on both sides. Yep,and I serve yep. They have the
tensils and everything. Wow, yees. Do you do you find it hard
to eat actually eat turkey on Thanksgivingbeing so involved with all the other birds.
I don't eat turkey. Oh okay, I don't eat me. I
(02:17):
don't eat turkey. I didn't thinkyou will mean yeah, no, no,
it's ham all the way, rightHam yeah cam yeah. Oh yeah.
They're all cheering right now at thebird. Yeah, they're all well
yeah yes. So a lot offoul language that you're in your yard on
Thanksgiving morning, Yes, there yougo. Yep, that's why you thank
(02:42):
you, thank you so much. That's why you can't take a turkey to
church because of all the foul language. Anyway, Monica Brubaker are wild Winged
Wonders with us this morning, andof course we're always thankful to have Monica
on our show on a regular basis, keeping us updated on how to take
care of those winged wonders that areflying around our backyards giving us just a
(03:04):
great entertainment and the course taking careof those bugs and insects out there for
us as well. And as ofcourse, now that we're we're kind of
round and third Thanksgiving weekend, startingto look at the Christmas coming up in
three weeks. Twofold one is youknow, if you're looking for something as
far as a Christmas gift, youknow, bird feeders and things like that
(03:24):
make a pretty darn good gift theydo. You know, it's one thing.
I mean, the gift itself. We have great feeders and very unique
items at our store. But youknow, when you're giving a feeder,
you're giving somebody, we like tosay, you know, song, color
and life into your yard. Youknow, you're bringing in these beautiful birds
(03:46):
that we have two, you know, to enjoy. And that's something that's
you know, that is especially intimes like this. It's just a wonderful
gift. Now, when I talkabout plants, I say dinner and a
show. But I'm not going tosay that the birds. Not today anyway,
it's not dinner show, just agood show. But it really is,
(04:09):
and it really is. And ofcourse once you get it started,
you guys, you know, doyou offer a program where you can you
deliver like bird feed, bird seedon a regular basis. We do,
so, like you can actually setthat up with somebody, right, give
them the feeder and then set upa monthly delivery of bird seed. You
can, yes, within our stores, you can talk to yeah, our
(04:30):
great sales associates, our team members, and they'll get y'all set up,
you bet, so you know, they get three weeks away and you just
can't quite think of what to givethose grandkids or somebody like that. I
mean, the bird feeders, itwould be absolutely a wonderful thing to do.
Or if somebody feeds the birds alot of times. One thing that's
more important almost than the seed orfeed itself is the bird bath, so
(04:54):
that they've got a source of waterover the wintertime. That'd be a nice
little gift to give. Also, yes, and we have heated bird baths,
and we also have bird bath heaters. Because as I look out this
morning, my heater is functioning,I can see that there's a little ice
around the rim, but everything elseis open, so the birds are enjoying
(05:17):
it, so you bet. Yeah, And I think for folks that aren't
familiar of course birds for the wateranyway. They obviously they need to drink
the water, but it's more importantthat they use it to clean themselves throughout
the winter season. Exactly. Yeah, Those feathers need preening. They need
to stay nice and clean so thatthey can, you know, during the
(05:39):
winter they are able to insulate basicallytheir bodies with their feathers and bring air
in between the body and the feathersso that they stay warm, but those
feathers have to be in tip topconditions to do that. So that water
is very important. So when itsnows, I mean do the birds do
they scoop up the snow and useup for a source of more. Sure
(06:00):
as well, they can, yeah, you bet it's it's gonna you know,
I mean affect their body temperature. But you know it's uh, they
have to forage a lot during thewinter to maintain their body heats, so
but they do. Yeah, sure, I'm talking with Monica Brubaker wild Wings
on wild Birds, I would saywild Wings Unlimited, wild Birds Unlimited.
(06:24):
Your website would be WBU dot com, slash Westchester or Springborough and lots of
great information on there for you aswell. So if we're looking to feed
the birds now, I mean nowwe're starting to get serious, starting to
use up some of other nature's seedsand that that's been out there for them
naturally, the insect population's pretty muchgone down now right now, what are
(06:45):
we looking to feed these birds? You know, it's always about the lippids,
the height, the high fat, high oil. So we're talking you
know, the bird seeds, blackoil. Some flowers always great peanuts are
fabulous, fast flower is even iseven good during the winter. A little
bit of millet. We've got alot of ground feeders that come here for
(07:08):
the winter, so feeding a littlebit of millet is good. But having
a ground feeder will double your yourvolume during the winter, so you want
to consider that. But sue itagain, Sue it is always you know,
great throughout the whole year. Thatthey're certainly going to gobble up that
to it to stay warm. That'sthat's always my favorite because it's so easy
(07:30):
to do, and just hang upa couple of those cakes. Man,
and it just seems like it makesa little bit of everybody happy. It
does it does, You're right,so they're enjoying it. Talking with Monica
Brubaker, wild Birds Unlimited, andof course you know Christmas ride around the
corner bird feeders and the bird suppliesa great gift. And again you can
have even have the seed delivered ona monthly basis, uh and take care
(07:53):
of it, you know, throughthe through the winter time as well.
Why is it do I see morecardinals during the winter time than they do
any other time the rest of theyear. Well, during the winter they'll
flock together to find food. Butduring you know, cardinals are the most
bitty. They have four and fivebroods a year during the summer. So
during the summer they've got to havetheir own food source, you know,
(08:15):
within their their radius. But duringthe winter it's it's you know, they
all come together and try to findfood. Of course there with that bright
red color darling. Yeah, wesee it. We see a lot of
them. They show up a littlebit more iteration. It always seems like
I just see more of them this, you know, through the winter time
than I do any other time therest of the year. Yeah, they're
out in the fields. You know, they're out in fields during the during
(08:37):
the summer too, they're out youknow, nesting and all of that.
But yeah, they come together alot of birds. Do you often see
you know, cardinals with other groups. You'll see chickadees, not hatch tit
mice together. You'll see. It'sinteresting during the winter to watch your feeder.
It's a little bit different. Ohyeah, no doubt about it.
(08:58):
And it's great entertainment. You know, I'm not just say dinner in the
show, but it's a great show. So you know, it is great
entertainment over the winter time as well. Talk about Monica brew Baker again from
wild Birds Unlimited. So as Monicabrew Baker and family go to the Thanksgiving
table, obviously there's no turkey therebecause you wouldn't dare have fowl on the
(09:20):
table. What is Monica brew Bakerfocus on the most once she goes to
that Thanksgiving table. I love thecranberry sauce. You know what I love,
you know with everybody has said cranberrysauce this morning? Oh really?
Yeah, with the oranges, youknow then you know where you make it
(09:43):
with cranberry and oranges delicious? Yeah, yeah, it's very good. It's
very good. You know. Thesweet potato souflet always a good one.
Scouts corn, that's another one thatour family eats every year, very good.
You know what Dan, you knowwhat Dan old Ham. Of course,
(10:05):
what Danny Gleason looks for us.He takes a big pan of cool
whip and puts a slice of pumpkinpie right in the middle of it.
It just takes the lit off thecool whip, pumpkin pie on top,
and that's that's what he eats.Yeah, a little like a little pumpkin
pie with a little pumpkin pie withhis whip cream. And that's about it.
(10:26):
Yeah, there you go. Allright, Well, hey, thank
you so much for all that youdo for us, all the information you
share with us during the season.I know we'll get back in touch in
January to help carry those wild wingedwonders through the winter season. And uh,
just always a pleasure you do sucha great job. You know so
much. I learned so much talkingto you, so thank you so much
(10:46):
for everything. I appreciate you.All right, we appreciate it. Monica
Brubaker wild Birds Unlimited. Be sureand check it out. And again,
that is a great gift for somebodyfor the Christmas, especially if you got
kids. Want to get him involved. That's a great thing to do.
And then you don't have to worryabout the seed. Have the have the
place and a monthly to deliver alittle bird seed and they can fill it
(11:07):
up and take care of the birdsthat way. So I think that sounds
like a lot of fun. Allright, quick break, we come back.
