Speaker 1 (00:03):
She's real.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
Find my form nice.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
Today.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Good afternoon, and welcome to the Car Shelf on fifty
five KRC, the talk station. I'm Dane Donovan taking all
of your car questions and so happy to be back.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
I've been on a little bit of a hiatus.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
We were in Florida for right after Christmas and had
a wonderful time.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
It was during New Year's even New Year's Eve.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
Holiday, and we had a great time.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Took uh, you know, the wife and the boys.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
We all went down to Sarasota, which is always a
great time. And my uncle Danny and a cousin of
mine and his wife and they were down there.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
It just happened to be down there at the same time.
So got to hang out with some.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Family, go to some of our local favorite restaurants and
it was it was a good time.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
And then we came back.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
You know, it was seventy degrees we flew out of
Punta Gorda, seventy degrees beautiful. We were on the beach
the day before and this was the Sunday right before,
you know, right when it started the you know, the
huge snow and we're getting on the planet.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
I told the boys, I said, good luck. I said,
take a good look at the sun. You're not going
to see it for a long time.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
And we came back to this mess, and man, what
a change to go from seventy degrees and sunny to
frigid colds in thirteen twelve thirteen inches of snow. So
and then planning on being back last week and came
down with the flu really bad, and man, it took
me down. I haven't had the flu. I'm you know,

(01:55):
knock on wood. I mean, I haven't had the flu
in twenty years. And man, it took me down. And
I was hoping that it didn't wasn't gonna get my family,
but uh, unfortunately it's kind of taking them down one
by one. And my wife's at home currently right now
not feeling her best as well.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
So uh but I'm here.

Speaker 1 (02:14):
Uh. But it is a shortened show, So if you
do have a call, the number to call five one
three seven fifty five hundred. That number gain five one
three seven fifty five hundred. We've got about Xavier basketball
game coming up, so again the show is shortened. But
also I hope, uh, I hope the holidays were good
for everybody. Happy twenty twenty five. It's been a little unusual.

(02:38):
Like I said, typically are not out of town during
the during the holidays, and uh don't typically get the flu.
So it's been an unusual twenty twenty five so far,
and we certainly have not gotten that much no, in
a long time.

Speaker 4 (02:52):
Now.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
I was on earlier this week with Sloaney on.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
Seven hundred WW and we were talking about, you know,
the things that you can do to get your car
ready for winning, right, you just never can prepare for
this stuff.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
We just don't know.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
We haven't had this type of snow in years, right,
you know, you know we get our little dust in
our two or three inches or whatnot.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
But you know, we were.

Speaker 1 (03:11):
Talking about, you know, how to prepare your car for
winter and things that you can do to make sure
that you are ready for the for the winter months,
and cause again you just never know. Now, mind you,
Tomorrow it's supposed to be eight degrees Monday is supposed
to be two degrees, right, That reeks havoc on your car. Right,

(03:32):
So first and foremost, if you have a garage. Okay, now,
now we tend to in America. I'm a I'm guilty
of it. Myself got two car garage and we can't
pull into the garage because we have too much garbage
in there. As far as you know, kids, baseball stuff,
basketball stuff, football.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Gear, you know, you name it, we've got it in
the garage.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
And uh so that's one of my projects I've got
get done to try to get the garage cleaned out
so my wife can park in there, because it's important to.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Do that, excuse me. And uh so, first and foremost
to protect your vehicle.

Speaker 1 (04:12):
From the cold in the winter is to have a
garage space. If you have a garage space, please utilize it.
You're gonna save yourself a tremendous amount of headache if
you can't, which you know, my my truck won't fit
in the garage, so I can't. I've always parked outside.
There are measures that you can take to try to
prevent anything from freezing or not working. And you know,

(04:37):
we were talking earlier in the week about hey, what
do we see the most of right want first and
foremost low tire lights and batteries that we see a
tremendous amount of that, right So you know, low tire
lights are not to be ignored. A lot of people
do most people do but they really shouldn't be ignored
because they're there for a reason.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
Right.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
And again, if your check if you're your tire light
is flashing, there's a problem with the system, most likely
a dead sensor.

Speaker 4 (05:05):
Right.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
If the light is on solid, there's a tire pressure
issue and you should have it looked at. Make sure
that the tire pressure is, that the tires are properly inflated,
and that you get that light out so if there
is a problem, you know that there is a problem.
And two, make sure you're out there getting your battery
tested and make sure that you know you're that battery
is ready for the worst pressure I'm sorry, the worst

(05:29):
you know, cold out there. So I mean those are
two things that you should be doing right now, especially
it's kind of you know, it's not too bad today.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
I mean, you can go out.

Speaker 1 (05:39):
There, check your air pressure, test your battery, check your battery,
get it tested. All of our locations are closed on
Saturdays and Sundays, but you know, you're welcome to bring
it by any day of the week. We'll test it
for free and let you know, give you a good
battery check up some.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
And we're going to continue that.

Speaker 1 (05:56):
But I want to get to these phone calls because
we do have a shortened show.

Speaker 2 (05:58):
So let's go to steam Eve. Hey, Steve, welcome to
the car show. How can I help?

Speaker 4 (06:04):
Hi, Dane?

Speaker 5 (06:04):
How are you doing? I have I have an nine
Hyundai Lantra, okay, and I've got a soft pedal that
that will pump up. And this car has electronic stability control.
And I thought maybe at first I had a master
cylinder going bad. I changed the master cylinder, I plused

(06:25):
the whole system. Uh, and I and bled it down.
And I've bled this system multiple times, doing circular bleeding
with clear tubing to make sure there was actually no
no error in the system. And I did I did
vacuum bleeding. I've done this like three times that I
can't figure out why this pedal it goes down as

(06:52):
far as it does, and uh, why it's away? Any
idea sure?

Speaker 2 (06:59):
Okay?

Speaker 1 (06:59):
So obviously the you know you've checked the brakes, the
brake pads, and you know all the brakes are fine,
correct correct, Okay, And you've bled, you've gravity bled, have
you pressure blooded.

Speaker 5 (07:14):
Vacuum bleded and did not pressure bleed it. I was
thinking of reverse bleeding. Maybe I haven't done that yet?

Speaker 2 (07:22):
Okay?

Speaker 1 (07:23):
Uh does does the vehicle have it should Does the
vehicle have a BS?

Speaker 4 (07:30):
Uh?

Speaker 5 (07:30):
It's yeah, it's got well, it's got electronic stability to
control ESC on it and it doesn't it shouldn't seem
to make a difference whether I turn it off or
turn it on.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
Okay, So what's the pedal doing? So when I mean,
the pedal is probably responsive. But then when probably when
you get to a light, does it slowly fade to
the floor?

Speaker 5 (07:51):
No? No, And I don't have any leaks in the
system either. So what it does go? It goes down
about uh oh, I don't know, three quarters of the way,
you know, like an inch or so off the floor,
and then if I pump it, it'll come up about
halfway and if I pump it again, it'll come up
to like full pressure.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
Okay. And you said you did replace the master.

Speaker 5 (08:14):
Cylinder, Yes, yes, I did.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
All right?

Speaker 1 (08:17):
Have you tried to so A lot of times all
these new vehicles have an ABS pump module, right, they've
got a module that you know for the ABS. A
lot of times air will get trapped inside that ABS module.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Okay, So what I want you to try to do?

Speaker 1 (08:34):
What I want you to try to do your next
step before you go replacing anything else. Sometimes those air
will get trapped in that module. What I want you
to do if you can safely get into a graveled lot,
gravel a lot, or or a lot that's just kind
of still covered, maybe in snow, okay, and again in

(08:54):
a safe manner, I want you to drive it, and
I want you to hit the brakes hard, and I
want you to ABS that vehicle. I want that ABS
pump to activate, and I want the ABS to start working. Okay,
And what that'll do is get that air that's trapped
in that ABS module out of the system.

Speaker 5 (09:13):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
I want you to try that again. Make sure you
do it in a safe manner.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
A lot of times air will get trapped in that
ABS pump module assembly, right, it's the same unit. Air
will get trapped in air. And even if you pressure
bleed it, you're gravity bleeding. No matter what you do,
you can't get that air out. But when you allot,
when you go into again a graveled lot or a
snowy lot, and you slam on those brakes and that

(09:38):
ABS engages, that ABS pump starts working and it works.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
That air out of the system.

Speaker 1 (09:44):
Now that air still trapped, it still could be trapped
in the lines itself, but it would get it out
of the module and could reverse what's going on.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Okay, so I want you to try that.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
It's been very successful in times where we've had an issue.
Not saying that's going to fix it, but it sounds
like you've done all your homework, You've done all the breaks,
you've led it. I want you to abs that vehicle
and see if you can get if there's any air
trapped in the abs pomp it should work its way
out of it.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
And and don't just do it once.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
I want you to do it three or four times
and try to get the air that may potentially be
trapped in that pump out of the system. Now, if
if it still doesn't work, then you call me back
next week and then we'll go to you know, take it,
take a look at other measures.

Speaker 5 (10:33):
Okay, all right, I'll give that a try.

Speaker 1 (10:35):
All right, make sure you're doing it's safe manner. I
don't want to promote getting people in trouble.

Speaker 5 (10:42):
I've got a nice lot I can do it.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
Okay, it's happened. I've been very successful with it. So
try that and then you call call me back next
week if it didn't.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
Fix it, Okay, Thanks to you, take care of have
a great weekend. All right, bye bye, all right.

Welcome to the car show. How can I help hi?

Speaker 4 (12:34):
Dane, welcome back.

Speaker 2 (12:36):
Thank you.

Speaker 4 (12:37):
Get at twenty eighteen Volvo S sixty The Stott Stop
system stopped working, and my wife got the message on
the dashboard stott stock requires service. Long story shot replaced
the auxiliary battery. Okay, message went away, but it's the

(12:58):
stot stop still doesn't op rate.

Speaker 2 (13:01):
Interesting, okay, all right, I saw the issue. It says
issue was start stopping.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
I'm like, well, uh, you got to first start and
replaced out auxiliary battery.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
So she did that. The message went away, but to
start stop, yeah, I did.

Speaker 4 (13:14):
That because it's you know, the batteries were all original.
The main battery is about eight months old, so it's
not that okay, and then the system is still not available.

Speaker 2 (13:28):
Okay, So is who did who did the who did
the battery? Did you do the battery or yes, yes
I did, I did it?

Speaker 1 (13:37):
Okay, all right, so you did it? And then did
you buy Evolve a battery? Did you get one aftermarket or.

Speaker 4 (13:47):
Uh no? I replaced it with the exact same battery
that was in there.

Speaker 7 (13:50):
A p M F I A M M okay, hmm,
You've got me a uh puzzle here, because I was like, yeah,
it's got to be that auxiliary battery.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
But you already did that. So so the car just
the start stop fee. It just doesn't stop anymore. It
just continues to run no matter, right.

Speaker 4 (14:13):
It just exactly whether the button's illuminated or not.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
Is the button still illuminated like it.

Speaker 4 (14:21):
It's yes, yep. You know I can shut it off
and it just doesn't operate. M I didn't know whether
you had to drive so many miles for the computer
to reset.

Speaker 2 (14:37):
Or I mean, no, it shouldn't.

Speaker 1 (14:40):
It should be functioning normally even you know, just by
replacing the battery, it shouldn't be anything.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
Hmm. I'm gonna have to I'm gonna have to do
some research on this one. Uh.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
Did did you replace the you said batteries? Did you
replace the car battery as well?

Speaker 2 (14:58):
On top of the Audien battery?

Speaker 4 (15:00):
Yep. I replaced the main battery probably eight months prior. Okay,
as we're having issues with that, that too was original
and it was taken a long time the crank, So
I replaced that with a brand new AGM and that's
been perfect, okay.

Speaker 1 (15:16):
And then you didn't and then you never had problems
with the startstop after replacing the car battery. How how
long ago after replacing that battery did you start having
issues with the start stop? Ah?

Speaker 4 (15:28):
Maybe about a month.

Speaker 1 (15:30):
Okay, all right, And is there a feature because every
year making models different, like Forge, you can turn that
feature off. Some cars you can turn that feature off.
Do you know if your vehicle has that feature where
you can turn that off.

Speaker 4 (15:44):
Yes, yep. And I've tried that a couple.

Speaker 2 (15:46):
Of times, off, on, off, on, and that doesn't change either.

Speaker 4 (15:51):
No, it doesn't change either.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
Okay, well you have got me, You've got me a
little puzzled here. Well, I'm gonna let me. I'm gonna
do some any I'm gonna do some research. I'm gonna
take down your information. Can you call me back next Saturday.
I'm gonna do my my own due diligence here.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
We don't.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
I would probably say Volvo is one of my least
favorite vehicles. Volvo and Nissan and are probably my least
two favorite vehicles to work on. They are a monsters
of their own. Not to say that we don't work
on them, just man, we just don't see a ton
of them. But let me do some research. Call me
back next Saturday. I'll be here as long as I

(16:37):
already got the flu, so I should be Yeah, I
should be good to go for a while. I'll be
back next Saturday. Let me do some research and call
me back next Saturday and I'll hopefully have some better
see if there's some other options that we can do
to try to get that thing back out on the
road for you can get that start stop to work.
All right, I appreciate you have great weekend, oh man.

(17:00):
And yeah, vol those are just they're a good car.
I'm not knocking Volvo. They just are just a whole
different monster. They are just something that you really really
have to know what you're doing now. Again, as far
as Volvos go, when it comes to tires, brakes, tune ups,
oil changes, you know, your your standard stuff. You know,

(17:21):
we can handle all that. But when it gets into
the start stops or the technology of the vehicle, that's
you got to have the software and it's a whole
other monster. And it's just something that we just don't
see a ton of. We just don't have a ton
of all those around here. But anyways, it that's the
thing about these vehicles nowadays is the technology that's in them.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
And it's really hard. You know, thirty years ago.

Speaker 1 (17:47):
You had a small amount of cars and they were
all mechanical and everything. You know, for the most part,
was cut and dry, right, I mean you didn't have
any type of you know, have any major technology in it.
And then these cars nowadays with the backup cameras and
the sensors and the the start stop, and the heated

(18:08):
mirrors and the you know, heated everything, heated steering wheels
and heated seats. There's there's just a lot of things
that you have to do and uh, and it's it's expensive.

Speaker 2 (18:20):
It's very very expensive. So you know, keep your car
as long.

Speaker 1 (18:25):
As you possibly can until somebody says it's not safe
to drive. It's you know, the technology they're putting these things,
I mean it's great, and a lot of it, most
of it's safety features, right, but when something happens, uh,
and one of those safety features fails, you know, it

(18:48):
can be very very costly and very expensive. So make
sure that you're keeping that car up the snuff and
making sure that you're getting it checked out, especially going
into you know, I can't tell you how many cars
that we had come in this week that the tires
are bald, and I don't, for the life of me,
I don't know how people get around town. I mean,
straight up bald zero tread in them, you know, so

(19:09):
make sure we don't know what else what kind of
winter we're gonna have. We know it's cold, but we
don't know what kind of snow we're gonna have for
the rest of the year or so. You need to
make sure that you're getting it in, getting the tires inspected,
getting the batteries tested, the electrical system tested, getting your
wiper blades replaced, and making sure and your tire pressure
checked to make sure that you're ready for the road
and for whatever Mother Nature sends our way. I'm again

(19:33):
at the short show.

Speaker 2 (19:34):
Everybody.

Speaker 1 (19:34):
I appreciate it. Everybody have a great weekend. I'll be
back next Saturday to answer all of your car questions.
