Speaker 1 (00:08):
With a four barrel car with a dueling shauce.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Good afternoon, and welcome with the car show. I am
Dane Donovan taking all of your car questions. The number
to call five one three seven nine fifty five hundred.
That number again, five one three seven four nine fifty
five hundred. Again Dane Donovan here from Donovan's Auto entire Center.
And as you may have heard earlier in that UH

(00:38):
at the beginning of the show, you know, we were
voted UH number one, voted best in Cincinnati, and we're
very proud of that. And again we want, we do
want to thank our great customers and listeners as well
for voting for us, and we really do appreciate it.
I really do. We all do as collectively as a team,
all do our best to make sure that you guys

(00:59):
are care of that your vehicles are back out and
running and you can get onto the onto your next adventure.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
Right.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
I know, my wife and I had to separate the
today and conquer and divide.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Right.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
So we have three boys, as you may know, and
two of them have basketball games or in tournaments and
if they win, they play tonight and tomorrow. So she
had to go out towards Miami University and then I
shortly after I am done here have to run up
to Saint Mark or York. But you know it's one

(01:33):
it's important to make sure that your car's running at
top notch when you got to get these kids to
to sporting events and everything like that. So, uh again
the number to call five one three seven hundred. That
number again, five one three seven fred phone lines and
wide open love to hear from you, so to please
give me a call. I want to talk about briefly.

(01:54):
I've talked about this before, but I want to hit
on it for those of those newer listeners or you
haven't here, I haven't heard me talk about it. But
you know, vehicles today are expensive. I get that. I
understand that it's very expensive, but and sometimes you want
to sometimes I'm seeing it more and more. You want

(02:17):
to protect your investment. Right now. I know it's not
really an investment. It is a depreciating asset, but it's
an asset to you because it needs you. You need
it to get you back and forth to school or
work or whatever. Right, so you need it. You need
a good reliable car, so you know, and these car
prices as you know, continue to rise. Cars are expensive,

(02:39):
they put so much technology in them. And you know,
I had two conversations with people this week, and I
want to reiterate to you listeners out there. If you're
buying a new vehicle, brand new and I'm not talking
new to you, but brand new. If you're buying that
one and you're gonna let's just say you're buying a

(03:00):
Hanta Quarter or at whatever, Toyota, ask them when you're
purchasing a vehicle, if they have the availability, if it's
possible to get an extended factory warranty. Okay, this is important.
Extended factory warranty. Okay. I can't emphasize that enough. Factory warranty. Okay.

(03:24):
If you're buying a used vehicle, or even if you
are buying new, and they offer you an after market warranty,
meaning that it is not provided by Honda or Toyota
or Ford, please do not buy it. They are It's
criminal what they do to people. They don't cover you.
Everybody thinks that these aftermarket warranty companies are going to

(03:47):
cover you. They don't. I hardly ever see him cover people.
And this one gentleman bought one and I can't remember
how much he paid for it.

Speaker 4 (03:59):
And.

Speaker 2 (04:01):
They just flied out told him no, they weren't fixing
it because he had a claim. Uh, he bought one.
He bought a warranty right after Mark Waranty great engine
blows up. Warranty company covers it great. Well, guess what
after that? They deemed it uh you know it was
it was deemed Uh that's his contract basically was Nolan voids.

(04:22):
So he brought it in, called the insurance company and
they're like, oh, yeah, we we considered that car total
because it's got a used engine in it, so we
you're no longer covered. And the guy was like, you know,
here I thought I was buying the car.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
I hear.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
I thought I was doing the right thing, the responsible thing,
and here come to find out, Uh, he made one
claim and they denied the rest of them. They said,
you're you know, basically you're done so and I in
time and time again, they don't these warranty companies. I
don't work with them. I don't work with any of them,
used to, don't anymore. They and there's a lot you're

(04:58):
gonna see this a lot of So if you have one,
if you're like, well, shoot, I already bought one. You
might want to check with your mechanic and make sure
he takes it. Okay, because they're a headache. You have
to call. You have to call, you know, and make
start the claim. You got all your information they need everything,
starts your claim, and then you know they'll be like,

(05:20):
all right, well, we don't pay any diagnostic. We don't
play shopsified pees fees, we don't play. We only pay
you know, what's your labor rate and you know, one
hundred and fifty dollars. Okay, well we only pay seventy
five dollars an hour. That YadA, YadA, YadA. So the
ticket's fifteen hundred dollars and they cover about five and
you've got two hundred fifty dollars deductible, so you know,
they covered basically two hundred fifty bucks of a fifteen

(05:41):
hundred dollars. I see it every single time, so I
quit dealing them. So again, even let's just say it's
a big ticket item. Let's just say it's an engine, right, Well,
they want to send out their own mechanic to verify
that I've looked at it, and then it is indeed
an engine so the last one I had too gentlemen

(06:01):
had one engine blew up and they said, okay, yeah,
he's covered, but what's not covers? You need to tear
that engine apart, which was gonna take my got tear
the take the engine out, tear it down and prove
exactly what failed. And if I if I couldn't prove it,
then they were going to cover anything. And it's just
it's it's that they're they are a scam. They are

(06:24):
a waste of your money. If you have one, unfortunately,
just let it ride out. But you know, you can
do whatever you you know, but I'm trying to stop
the people from when they're out there purchasing a vehicle,
do not buy an after market warranty. They're they're they
are not. They they deem that these things are great.
They're not. They're a nightmare. And again a lot of

(06:47):
repair shops are getting away from it to where they're
not fixed. They're they're not working with people that with
after market warranty's because they're again, it's a nightmare and
you don't get your money. I had one last year
that you know, did the work and then the guy goes, oh,
by the way, I've got an after market warranty. You
want to make sure you disclose that right before you
do any work. And I didn't get paid. You know,

(07:09):
it's three hundred and sixty two dollars. So I'm telling
you now, please do not buy an aftermarket warranty. Yes,
there are times where it does come in handy, but
nine out of ten times it doesn't. It doesn't go
your way, Okay, it doesn't, So please again, if you're
buying a new vehicle, ask if they have an extended

(07:30):
factory warranty. If they do not, do not buy an
after market warranty. I had two people again this week
and I had to tell them they were denied. Both
of them were denied, and again we don't typically work
with them. But again I did the work and then
they tell me they have an aftermarket warranty. You got
to disclose that when you know, when you walk in
and have your mechanical get your car, go hey, listen,

(07:52):
I have an aftermarket warranty. Will you work with them?
I mean there's some warranty companies. We used to just
shy away from certain companies, but now you know, you're
bombard and berated every time you turn a TV on
with getting this this warranty for your cars. And I'm
here to tell you that they they're selling you. There's
you're wasting your money. They really are a headache and

(08:15):
they really again it's criminal what they do to people.
And so please do not. I would not advise you
to get one. I just want to be absolutely frank
with you that they're not good for you. So all
right again then I we'll call five one three seven
fifty five hundred. That number again, five to one three
seven four nine fifty five hundred. Coming up we have

(08:37):
coming up, we have tab Wayne, Bill and Mark. You're
listening to the Car Show on fifty five KRC, the
talk station.

Speaker 4 (08:44):
This is fifty five KRC, an iHeartRadio station.

Speaker 5 (09:13):
Three eight two nine ninety thirty eight two nine ninety thirty.

Speaker 2 (09:19):
Taking your car questions the number to call five one
three seven nine fifty five hundred. That nor again five
one three seven four nine fifty five hundred, And as promised,
we're going to go to the phones. We've got tab
Hey Tad, welcome to the car show. How can I help?

Speaker 6 (09:33):
Hey Dane, listen to you out here in Maryland and
called in a few times calling about a two thousand
and two explorer.

Speaker 3 (09:40):
Okay, uh, yesterday has.

Speaker 6 (09:43):
Got the power seats on the passenger side. I was
at the load and the full of the back seats down,
and so I could slid the front seat up. But
now it will not go back the switch. It'll go up,
it'll go down, it'll go forward, but it will not
go back. So what that be? I mean it's the
motors that runs.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
Yeah, but there's yeah, but there's typically when when you
hit the switch, can you hear the motor.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
Can?

Speaker 6 (10:11):
Yeah? But it was it was almost like very slow,
and it's kind of like vibrating like to something just
sounds like that something's wrong when I first slid it
up yesterday.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
So, I mean, if you a lot of those, a
lot of these seats, especially with the motor the electric
power or whatnot, it's usually not just one. It's usually
just not one motor. They sometimes they can have two
to three motors on these things. One that that lets
it go up down, one that goes side to side,
one goes up you know. So probably if you can

(10:41):
if you're hitting that's that switch and you can hear something,
that motor is probably locked up in that seat. I
mean you would need to if you would do anything.

Speaker 6 (10:54):
It doesn't do anything to put it back. You don't
even hear the motor. But if you move it forward
and moves normally was up and down normally, like you
hear the motor, but not going back, you don't hear anything.

Speaker 2 (11:05):
Okay, I thought I thought you said it was stuck back,
But it's stuck up for like it's stuck too close
is it to Okay, it's.

Speaker 6 (11:13):
A passenger side, so it's like too close to you
at the citema. So now I can't get it back.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Yeah, I mean the thing is is uh, you're gonna
probably it's hard. You want to make sure that you
have power. You want to make sure you have power
and ground going to the switch right, But it sounds
like if every other position is working, sounds like you've
got power. So most likely that motor is just bad.
That that motor in the seat is bad. So it's

(11:45):
probably the problem. And the thing is though, too is
most manufacturers. Most manufacturers don't allow you to buy just
that one motor. You got to buy the whole lower
seat track, which it's very expensive, or you could, you know,
obviously go to a junk yard and get one, but
they don't go back.

Speaker 6 (12:04):
I like that much of the park part or something
like that would be on this well.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
Whether it being an O two, assuming that we can
it's even available because of the age, I bet that
that that lower track is probably twelve hundred bucks. And
then then typically it doesn't come with the leather and
all that, so it depends on how they sell it,
but it's most likely it's going to be the track.
So that's why I said probably with it being an

(12:32):
O two, my suggestion would be getting a used one
at a junk yard, you know, just buy the whole
seat and then you can you know, and then you
can swap it out, but you want to make sure.
You want to have somebody tests and make sure that
if you've got power and ground going to that motor,
the motor is bad, and it sounds like if everything
else is working, it sounds like probably the motor is.

(12:55):
I mean, did you try what you know, did you
try to have somebody forced this seat back while you
hit the switch or anything like that, or you.

Speaker 6 (13:02):
Just I'll try that, I'll try it. Is there any
way to to have it like just step back, let's say,
at the motor and then it's too expensive? Is there
any way to just get the seat back to like
a position without having to get the motor? So? So,
I mean we just won't be able to move it forward,

(13:24):
like in a position that that's kind of like in
the middle where it's not too far back or too
far forward.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
You know, if it's if it's the switch, which I mean,
if it's the switch, you could power up that motor.
You know, you could power up the motor and get
its work. But if it's the motor, no, I'm not
familiar of any way that you'd be able to move
that back without putting that motor in there.

Speaker 6 (13:48):
All right's a try with something kind of handle the
switch and then try to push it back right.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
It's kind of like if you want to, it's kind
of like, uh, you know, a good analogy would be
like basically on that motor is you know you've got
you know you've got drive, but you don't have reverse,
you know what i mean. So it's just that that
that that So it's either that they don't typically go
bad that often, but a lot of times, you know,
because we don't really move our seats too much, but

(14:13):
a lot of times if you move them all the
way up or all the way back, sometimes they just
they don't come back to life. And just so okay,
get somebody to get a get a used one, or
see if a mechanic can power it up, just to
get it back to where you want it. You know,
but I'm not familiar. I'd have to I'd have to

(14:35):
see the seat. I'm not familiar. Some of the seats
you can move manually again without looking at it. It's
hard to say, but it's worth trying. It's worth taking
a shot. But it's you know, so well, all right,
I appreciate you. Thank you. I have a great day.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
By bye.

Speaker 2 (14:55):
That's the thing on a seat like that, man, you
can they get stuck and a lot of times you
just can't get them to come back. So all right,
let's go back to the phones. We've got Wayne. Hey, Wayne,
welcome to car show. How can I help? Hey?

Speaker 4 (15:11):
How you doing?

Speaker 1 (15:11):
Hey?

Speaker 4 (15:12):
Listen, I heard your commentary on the extended warranty after
market products, and I'll tell you my mechanics stopped accepting
that like a year and a half ago.

Speaker 2 (15:22):
So yeah, yeah, I appreciate the insight. You know, when
they first came out. I believe in them when they
first did and they covered a lot of stuff, and
now it's just again it is absolutely criminal what they're
doing to people. And like I said, I a lot
of times I got to chase them down to get paid,

(15:43):
and you know they don't. It's you know, and then
they want me to put on used parts or you know, hey,
can you know, can you put this used part on?
Or we want to put our own, you know, our
own part on, And you know, I said, there, you know,
what's the price of you know, what's the price of
your old Nate, I'm like Hey, you know, well I'm
getting it from the dealer. It's gonna be eight hundred
and fifty offs. Oh well, we can get one from

(16:04):
Amazon and we'll ship it to you for you know,
one hundred and fifty bucks. And I'm like, yeah, when
that when that part fails, are you gonna pay me
to take it back off again?

Speaker 4 (16:13):
No?

Speaker 2 (16:14):
It's just like yeah. And that's why, you know, I
wanted to emphasize people like, look, if you have one,
if you already purchased one, you know it is what
it is. I but please disclose it to your your
you know, your technician, your mechanic, because so many people
have me work on their car, and the way the
policy is is if and this guy yelled at me

(16:35):
earlier this week, called up and uh did all the work.
The guy said, go ahead and fix the car. I
fixed the car and then he goes, oh, by the way,
I got an off mark a warranty called a warranty company.
They're like, well, what did you do to fix you know?
What'd you do? And I said, I did this, this, this, this, Well, sir,
you need it before you do any work. You need
to let us know before you call us. And I'm like, well,

(16:58):
my customer didn't tell me he had one, and they're like,
well he's then he's not. They're not gonna They're not
gonna cover it because I didn't jump through their hoops
first to look at it, call them, and then you know,
get so so they wouldn't. They wouldn't cover the poor
guy because I had already done the work, which wasn't
my fault. He said, go ahead and fix it, and
then when I called him to tell him it was done,
he's like, oh, oh, I've got an after mark or warranty,

(17:19):
and they wouldn't cover him because I already did the work,
so oh man. And sometimes sometimes they'll be like, well,
we want to send out our own mechanic and all
the cars sit there for three days and then people
will call it. Have you looked? Has a guy been there?
I'm like Nope, just sits there. So now the car
stuck on the left or you know, it's just a racket.

Speaker 3 (17:39):
Yeah, just big scam.

Speaker 1 (17:41):
Anyhow.

Speaker 4 (17:42):
Yeah, I've got a twenty eleven Nissan Maxima. I'm the
original owner, got one hundred and seventy two thousand on it.
Car runs great, a lot of power. I've taken care
of it. I've changed the CVT oil and a maybe
every thirty five forty thousand miles runs great. About three

(18:03):
months ago, I noticed some while changing the oil, I
noticed an oil drip and it was the oil cooler
gasket that had to be replaced. So my mechanical.

Speaker 2 (18:15):
Yeah right, right, yeah, that was very common, yes.

Speaker 3 (18:20):
Right, he replaced it, ran great.

Speaker 4 (18:22):
About three months later, I noticed oil leaking again, and
I couldn't figure out. I thought it was the gasket
failed that he put on. So we put it on
the lift and my my valve covers were leaking. Believe
it or not, my valve I've never heard it before
on these Nissans three point five. But anyways, to replace

(18:46):
both of them, and on those valve covers, you just
can't replace the tube seals. You got to replace the
whole valve cover. So he gave me a price on
replacing both valve covers for like eight hundred bucks. And
the car is only worth about sixty five hundred dollars.
And I'm going back and forth whether to sell it

(19:07):
or have it replaced. And uh, I was just wondering,
does that price seem about right for you? I mean,
does it seem logical.

Speaker 2 (19:17):
Yeah, I was gonna probably say I would I would
think it actually be a little bit more. I actually
think that price is a little low. Let me ask
you something. Are the valve covers metal? Are they illuminum?
Or are they plastic?

Speaker 3 (19:29):
They're plastic.

Speaker 4 (19:30):
They're all plastic.

Speaker 1 (19:31):
Okay, I just I just bought.

Speaker 4 (19:33):
I just bought a twenty two Lexus r X three
fifty and I was I pulled the pulled the cover
on it. And those valve covers are plastic.

Speaker 2 (19:43):
Also, Yeah, a lot of them. That's you know, a
lot of vehicles, a lot of manufacturers are going to
plastic make them, you know, lighter, more efficient, you know,
so on and so forth. But what happens with the plastic ones?
And I agree with you through a mechanic on the
plastic ones, Yes, I'd highly recommend that you replace the
whole valve cover because they're plastic from the engine heat,

(20:04):
they warp. They call us all comes. So you know
there's been times where you know, we've put just the
gasket on it and six months later, come back and
they're still leaking, and then we got to put the
valve car they'll replace the whole valve cover, So yes,
I would agree to do the whole valve cover if
it's certainly if it's plastic to do that. And eight
hundred dollars is it a is it a four cylinder

(20:26):
V six.

Speaker 4 (20:27):
Oh a V six three point five? Well, three hundred
horse power?

Speaker 2 (20:31):
Yeah? Okay, all right, that's I mean, you're probably mostly
most of it's probably labor, but I mean eight hundred
dollars seems like a really good price in my opinion.
I was gonna say probably twelve hundred would be okay.
So it's it. They're a nightmare to do. They're an
absolute nightmare. Not trashing Nissan, but man, Nissan's are liis
On is probably my least favorite vehicle to work on.

(20:53):
I absolutely just oh man, there are a nightmare to
work on.

Speaker 4 (20:58):
Well, they pushed the engine so far back to the
wall you can't even get back to the back manifold
or or the back plugs.

Speaker 3 (21:05):
It's amazing.

Speaker 2 (21:05):
Yeah, you got to the whole manifold off to get
to the spark plugs. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (21:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (21:11):
Interestingly, interestingly, though this new RX three fifty I bought,
it's a twenty two, the engine is closer to the grill.
Matter of fact, I can reach my hand in back
of the back velve cover on the new RX three fifty,
which is kind of interesting.

Speaker 2 (21:29):
Yeah. Yeah, sometimes, I mean some of these cars, they
just cram these engines in them, and the other times,
you know, you're you're able to actually get your hands
in there to do a tune up or whatnot. But
I remember when I first started doing this, which was
twenty five years ago. You know, I remember cars coming

(21:50):
in and you'd pop the hood and you could see
the ground, you know. Right nowadays you pop the hood
and I know on that Lexus, I bet you when
you popped that hood, you couldn't even find the engine
all the plastics they put underneath.

Speaker 4 (22:01):
Their right, I had to take off all the shrouding
to take a look at anything.

Speaker 2 (22:05):
Yep, yep. They don't want you poking around in there.
They want you to take it back to the dealer.

Speaker 4 (22:11):
Oh yeah, there's not even there's not even a dipstick
for the for the oil anymore.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
Yeah. Well, most cars don't even have dipsticks for the oil,
which I talk which I talk about this or I
talk about this every Saturday. Like that's why it's imperative
that you make sure you're checking your oil, you know,
but a lot of times, uh, you know, a lot
of times you just have to go through the dash,
go through the computer to to find out what the

(22:38):
oil level is. There is a way to do it,
but so, but yeah, eight hundred dollars seems like a
reasonable price. I would take them up on that, Okay, kay, thanks, Hey,
absolutely appreciate it. So, yeah, eight hundred dollars seems pretty reasonable.
And again, if you have aluminum valve covers, you don't need.

(22:59):
You can place just the gasket. But if you have
a plastic valve cover, yes, I highly recommend you replace
the the entire valve cover because again, due to the
heat of the engine, these plastic valve covers will warp. Okay. Also,
if you're buying, if you're gonna do the job yourself,
which is fine, I would highly recommend that you don't

(23:19):
buy an aftermarket valve cover, buy a dealer one. The
fact that the aftermarket ones don't fit right and they leak.
I know this because we've had it happen before, so
we don't mess around with aftermarket valve covers. Again, if
you're doing your own tune up or whatnot, alnor starter breaks.
Stuff like that. You know you can get aftermarket. But man,

(23:40):
when you're dealing with electrical sensors or a piece of plastic,
you think like, oh, it's plastic valve cover. They're all
the same. They're not.

Speaker 7 (23:49):
They're not.

Speaker 2 (23:49):
They don't fit right, and you're gonna be back doing
it again. So buy If you're gonna do your own
valve cover and it is plastic, buy it from the dealer. Yes,
it will be more, but I guarantee you you won't
be doing it a second time. Okay, So all right,
then I'm gonna call five one three seven four nine
fifty five hundred. That number five one three seven four
nine fifty five hundred coming up. We have Bill Mark

fifty five one hundred. That number again, five one three

(24:54):
seven four nine fifty five hundred, and you guys, man,
phone lines are lighting up. I really do appreciate it.
So let's get to the phones. We've got Bill, Hey, Bill,
welcome to the car show. How can I help?

Speaker 3 (25:05):
Oh, it's a great show today.

Speaker 2 (25:07):
Really show appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (25:09):
I got a two thousand and five Silverado and I'm
sitting in at the other day trying, you know, let
a warm up and it just died, just boom, wouldn't start,
wouldn't start no matter what. I've got a couple of ideas,
and people told me that the crank cas crank case
censor could be bad. Maybe the fuel pump went out.

(25:32):
I don't know. I'm just stumped.

Speaker 2 (25:34):
All right, So it was running and then just quit. So, right,
does the car crank? Is it cranking?

Speaker 3 (25:41):
Yeah, yeah, no problem cranking. Well it was now the
battery is dead. Okay, all right, I don't know if
that's related, but uh.

Speaker 2 (25:50):
I'm I am leaning towards most likely it's probably a
bad fuel pump, very very common on chevyes. Now here's
what that's what you can do. Obviously, Obviously you got
to get a battery in it, okay, or take that
battery up to AutoZone or anywhere and get it charged up.

Speaker 3 (26:08):
Okay, okay, okay.

Speaker 2 (26:10):
While you're there getting that battery charge up or getting
it replaced, however you want to do, however you want
to do it, we need to establish whether or not
you've you've if you have a fuel issue or a
spark issue, right, So simply something that you can do.
You can do this at home. While you're getting that
battery either replaced or charged, buy a can of starting fluid. Okay, okay,

(26:33):
and you're gonna take off. You know, you're gonna take
off the the the where the air filter goes, right, right,
So get the battery back in, take the top off
where the air filter goes, and while somebody is cranking
the car. You know, after the battery is back in,
while somebody is cranking, I want you spray some starting fluid.
In that in that in that tube that goes unto

(26:53):
the engine. Okay, once you spray started fluid in there,
if that car fires and runs and then dies, that
little bit of starting fluid you gave it allowed it
to start. So that was that tells me we got
a fuel problem. Right, And again this is something that
you can do. Now. If you're spraying in there, you know,
and the car still doesn't start, the most likely we're

(27:13):
dealing with probably a spark or like a spark issue
where yes it could be uh, you know, a crank sensor,
but you know, get a good battery in that thing,
get a can of starting fluid's probably you know, nine
bucks or something like that. And while somebody's cranking, and
I want you to just take off that air box
and I want you to spray inside that boot, the

(27:33):
accordion looking boot that goes under the engine. And again,
if it starts up and runs for you know, five seconds,
two seconds, I don't care. If it runs for a
couple of seconds and dies, we've got a fuel problem.
And the five silverado's are very very common to for

(27:54):
the uh for the fuel pumps to go out. Now,
the other thing that you could try to do too.
If you've got a mallet or a hammer, crawl underneath it.
And a lot of times there's been times, a lot
of the time, while somebody's cranking it, somebody on the
on the ground is banging up with that hammer, banging

(28:15):
up on the fuel tank, trying to get that get
that car started. A lot of times by banging on it.
You you know, you basically wake up the pump and
it starts working again. Believe me, I know it sounds
I know it sounds silly, but I can't tell you
how many cars we started just by banging up on
the fuel pump and banging up on the tank and boom,

(28:37):
it fires up, and we're like, all right, we got
a fuel pump problem. It doesn't happen all the time,
but those are two things that you could do at
home before you get it toad. But with it being
an five Silverado and it quit on you while it
was running, probably a fuel pump issue. So get the
starting flord.

Speaker 3 (28:57):
It wouldn't be a relay, but more and more.

Speaker 2 (28:59):
Likely Yeah, I mean it could be a relay, but
you're gonna have to you know, you could try to
find the start of relay and pop the fuse, you know,
pop the fuse panel underneath. But man, I mean again,
it could be possible. But man if I had a
nickel for every a Chevy Silverado that we had to

(29:22):
put a fuel pump in, I'd be a millionaire. Let
me just tell you, Yeah, it's very common. It's probably
the number one fuel pump that we do is on
Chevyes number one, Forde number two. So for some reason,
Chevyes and Forges just can't build a fuel pump. They last.
They've gotten better over the years, but it's very common.

(29:47):
Like I've never seen a Honda or Toyota. I take
that back, and twenty five years I've seen one Toyota,
it was a Corolla, and one Honda that ever needed
a fuel pump. It's unheard of, right, So if you're
calling me about a hand I'd be like, yeah, we're
probably dealing with a relay, the fuel pump relay or
main relay or something like that. But five Chevy, I'm

(30:11):
willing to bet that's what it is. So if you
can't get a hammer hit on it, if it doesn't start,
then go get your starting fluid sprayed inside the intake
boot and see if it starts, and if it does
and dies real quick, then we know, hey, we got
a fuel issues, and probably most likely it needs a
fuel pump. A lot of people go to, oh, well, Dave,
maybe it's just a clogged fuel filter. I've been doing
this twenty five years. I've never ever had a car

(30:33):
towed to me because it wouldn't start because the fuel
filter was clogged. Never seen it. I recommend you replacing
it because a lot of times, if it is the
fuel pump, a lot of times that filter is dirty.
It gets dirty over the years, and it is recommended
to be replaced. But when the filter's dirty, it's having
to It makes the pump have to work harder, which
could could have caused the pump to fail to begin with,

(30:55):
but it wouldn't be the direct result of why it's
not starting. So if it does need the fuel pump,
I would recommend doing the fuel filter as well.

Speaker 3 (31:04):
All right, it makes sense. Sure can get one from
a dealer or yes.

Speaker 2 (31:09):
You don't have to get one from a dealer, but
AC Delco or Delphi, AC Delco or Delphi you can
find those that you know ko I or most of
your you can find them online too. But AC Delco
or Delphi. Delphi is the you know, that's who manufactures
the pumps. So okay, but AC a lot of times

(31:30):
if you bought one from the dealer and you open
it up, you know it'll say either A C. Delco
or it'll say Delphi on it because Delphi builds all
the parts for AC Delco. So either one of those
two would be fine. And yes, they are going to be. Yes,
can you buy just a little cheap buy And here's
the other thing. Don't you want to buy what you
want to buy? The fuel pump module assembly? Okay, not

(31:54):
just the pump. You want to buy the fuel pump
module assembly. It's the whole thing. It's the it's the pump,
it's the float, it's the seal.

Speaker 3 (32:03):
That yeah makes sense.

Speaker 2 (32:05):
Yeah, yeah, can you get a pump for fifty bucks? Yeah?
The module assembly is probably gonna be you know, three
seventy five. But you know you it's just not I
just don't ruck it. We've never ever put just a
pump in a car. It's always been the fuel pump
module assembly. It's it's the one. It's the only way
to do it, the right way.

Speaker 3 (32:25):
So if I do bump the tank and it stars.
I should probably still put a new pump in it anyway, right, Yeah,
absolutely at some point.

Speaker 2 (32:34):
Yeah, and then and then also if you're going to
be doing it yourself, believe it or believe it or not.
When we do fuel pumps on Fords and Chevyes or whatnot,
it's a lot easier just to take the bed off
the truck. Now that, Yeah, that's how we do it.

Speaker 4 (32:53):
Now.

Speaker 2 (32:53):
Granted, you know we've got four or five guys that
can lift the bed up. I mean you might not
be able to lift the bed up, but it's just
so much easier to do it that way because what
happens is those bolts that hold it for the the
straps that hold the tank up, those rusts, and they
don't come out or they break. And then if they break,
then you're screwed because now now you gotta now you

(33:16):
gotta tank that can't be held up. So and the
bed there's only six bolts that hold the bed in.
I mean it takes us, it takes us probably five
minutes to pull bed off of a pull a bed
off of a truck. And that's how we do our
fuel pumps. It's just it's a lot easier. You're not
on your back. You don't get fuel in your face

(33:37):
and your ears. I got fuel one year. My one year,
I got fuel in my ear and it was I
was off man. It was painful. Oh it was so bad.

Speaker 3 (33:48):
So buzzing. Get to the fuel filter. Easier that way too,
I guess too.

Speaker 2 (33:52):
Yeah, yep, because it's right on the right on the
frame rail. Yep. So report Batty. Let me know. All right, Bill,
I appreciate it. You have a great day. So that's
the way we do it. So and he's he asked
all the right questions. So all right, coming up, we
have Mark Ray and Randy. You're listening to the Car

(34:13):
Show on fifty five krs the talk station.

Speaker 5 (34:15):
Do you have a truck, camper, r V or trailer
that needs body repair? If so, call my buddy Dave Breakmanute.

ninety thirty eight two nine ninety.

Speaker 2 (34:44):
Thirty taking your car questions. And I'm gonna call five
one three seventy four nine fifty five hundred. And I
was trying to get my son to he was about
to sit down. I tried to roll the seat out
from underneath them, but I had to come back on
the air. So all right, let's go back to the phones.
Phone lines will here we have. We've got Mark. Hey, Mark,
welcome to the car show. How can I help?

Speaker 3 (35:06):
Thanks?

Speaker 7 (35:07):
I appreciate it. You can still pull a seat out
if you want.

Speaker 2 (35:11):
Yeah, I know, I have to take him to his
basketball game, so and we got to didn't have enough
time to go home and pick him up, so he's
sitting in here.

Speaker 4 (35:19):
That's all right.

Speaker 7 (35:20):
Always important to have fun, and that'd be a memory
of a lifetime, so you can never forget that. I've
got a two thousand and five Cadillac Escalate ESD and
my power steering pump went out, and I was wondering
how much ballpark costs would be the replacement part for that,
And how much labor time would be needed to replace that.

Speaker 2 (35:42):
Yeah, good question. They do go out quite a bit.
Labor's probably you're probably around They're all kind of different,
but I'd say you're probably around three four hours, and
then you got the pump and you got a new fluid,
and then the pump's probably going to be another four
or five hundred, so you're gonna probably be out around

(36:03):
one thousand bucks. I'd say ballpark could be, could be,
could be a little less, could be a little bit more.
Depends on you know. I'm sure you hear me talk
talking about getting ac Delco parts. I really on an
aftermarket pump, you can do it. The quality isn't necessarily
there as as good as ac Delco. But sometimes ac

(36:25):
Delco is not available because of the age, you know,
So if you wanted to go after.

Speaker 7 (36:30):
More people are about the pump, and he told me
it's discontinued.

Speaker 2 (36:35):
Yeah, so sometimes you have no choice. You have to
go with aftermarket. But uh, but you can't. Ac Delco
does make a You probably can get a remanufactured pump.
They they probably don't have a new one, but you
could probably get a remanufactured one. But if you're gonna
buy a pump. Buy a pump with a new reservoir.

(36:55):
That's the other thing. A lot of times these these
cars come with a power steer pump but doesn't have
the reservoir with it, and then you got to fight
to try to get that reservoir off, and it's got
an O ring that you can't get and then it
it starts leaking. So if you try to do it,
or if anybody doesn't, make sure you get one with
a reservoir already on the new pump or used U pump.

Speaker 7 (37:18):
Do they usually come with one, like if it's an
ac Deco or a del Fi Park.

Speaker 2 (37:23):
Usually, but sometimes they don't. So you just want to
you just want to ask. Okay, So but I would
I probably say.

Speaker 7 (37:31):
They can't get one with one to still go ahead.

Speaker 3 (37:33):
But then yeah, I.

Speaker 2 (37:34):
Mean, if if that's your only option, then yes, that's
your only option. But I would yeah, I would probably
say you're you know again, eight hundred on the low end,
maybe twelve hundred on the high end. That's about parts
in labor, parts, and labor is about where you're gonna
be at.

Speaker 7 (37:50):
Okay, so it takes a while to do the job, then.

Speaker 2 (37:53):
Yeah, they're not. They're not hurtful though, so they're pretty accessible.
I could be I could be you know, might it
might only be you know, two and a half hours,
but i'd like to I'd like to be a little
bit higher. So you don't go in with with you know,
I always sure, yeah, you just want to make sure
that you know, because sometimes I had a guy the

(38:14):
other day that, uh, I'm training him to be a
service He's been a mechanic most of his life, but
he's training to be a service advisor because he just
you know, this this job over time, your you know,
your body starts breaking down, and he's just like, man,
I can't do this forever. So anyways, you know, somebody
called and said, oh, yeah, can I get a price
on some breaks on an audi? And he's like, oh,

(38:34):
it's probably about six hundred bucks. I looked at him.
I said what And I said, buddy, I'm like, don't
give don't give prices on the phone. You need to
look at him because uh, you know, I mean I
I priced out a break job on an outing. Uh
last year it was eighteen thousand dollars to do for
all four breaks on an OUTI oh wow, So but uh, yeah,

(38:58):
So sometimes you just want to make sure that all
these cars, I mean, it's silly. I mean, especially Audi,
Volkswagen BMW. They don't put just one set of brakes
on a car. They'll they'll sometimes have three, four different
types of breaks. So I just always want to make
sure that you get a priced out right. So but
all right, let me know I appreciate it. All right, thanks,

(39:19):
take care, bye bye. All right, let's go to the phones.
We've got Ray, Ray, welcome to the car show. How
can help?

Speaker 1 (39:25):
Hey, you forgot to mention when he had the better
off he should budget and buying new brake lines on
a twenty year old chef.

Speaker 2 (39:31):
Yeah, I didn't. I didn't want to ruin his day.
But yeah, that's pretty that's a pretty common problem. We've
done more brake lines on Chevyes than any other car too,
so that's a good point.

Speaker 1 (39:42):
It's a heck already easier when you just great and
fronting on the frame wheel.

Speaker 2 (39:45):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (39:46):
The other reason I'm calling is because I've never had
one of these fail, and I don't know for certainly
it is. It's a quoling fan on the front of
the c X nine miles that my wife Doggie. She's
coming home the other night it was cold up night,
and she said it was a it was a random
vibration that she started hearing. She said she heard a

(40:07):
high pitched whine before they're in. The vibration got and
I turned around and played with the heat controls, opened
the hood and saw the fan vibrating on the front.
So I would imagine that fan assembly or baring assembly failed. Yeah,
and it's random because it's that that fan is not
always called for when it's just gold out correct.

Speaker 2 (40:29):
Yeah, I've seen them. I've seen them. I've seen them
go quite massa for some reason. I don't know why,
but love mastas really really do enjoy the product, like
the product that they've got a good car. But yeah,
just that that that fan just went bad. So get
the It depends on how they sell it, but a
lot of times, especially on masses, they'll they'll sell like
a cooling fan module assembly, right, So it's basically both

(40:53):
fans and a module that a computer that controls those
fans as well. I would buy the whole buy the
whole thing. Typically the only place you could find that
is from the dealer. But you can just replace that
one fan.

Speaker 1 (41:06):
But I did find one on rock Otto. It's a
T y C brand.

Speaker 2 (41:12):
Yeah, t y C is good. T y C is good.

Speaker 1 (41:14):
Okay, yeah, I thought so. But then other thing is
there's a big heat sink on the one thing like
for electronic heat chink? Is that in that module? Is
that something that's cool in the computer up there? Or
that the size of the pack of cigarettes.

Speaker 2 (41:30):
Yeah, yeah, that's the module.

Speaker 1 (41:33):
Okay, So that's it, that's the part that's coming in.
That's way the heat think because it's a computer chip yep.

Speaker 2 (41:39):
Okay, yeah, you want to get one that has the
module in it, because the modules fail quite a bit too.

Speaker 1 (41:45):
One hundred and forty nine thousand miles. If I'm doing
if the module's sales, I'm buying new stands as well.

Speaker 2 (41:51):
Yes, I mean I would do it, but I mean
if you were if it's vibrating though it sounds like
that the you know, the fan itself is shot. But
if you're gonna buy one, I'd get one with the
module included in it. All right, all right, it's not
hard a typically typically most of the time there's just

(42:11):
two screws at the top and then they slide into
like a bracket at the bottom of the radiator. So
it's usually you unplug the module, you take those two
bolts out, and I know it's it sounds like I'm
it's really easy. It is, but it just slides up.
It just slides right up, and the next one you
just slide it back down, bolt it down and plug
it in and you're good to go. But get the TyC.

Speaker 1 (42:35):
How hard is it to do? The serpentine though? And
then she's got one hundred and forty eight thousand miles
on it, and I kept telling them we got to
get it done.

Speaker 2 (42:41):
Yeah, cool belts are not fun on any car anymore.
They're kind of a nightmare. So it wouldn't be fun.
But I mean, what you could do is get a flashlight,
look at look at the ribs of the belt. If
the ribs in the belt have cracks in them, then
yes it's time. But if you don't see any cracks
in the in the belt, I wouldn't be I wouldn't

(43:02):
worry about it.

Speaker 1 (43:04):
It's not nearly as exposed as a five Saturday show.

Speaker 2 (43:07):
Correct.

Speaker 1 (43:08):
Yes, so it's a lot easier on that, yep, But
I appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (43:14):
All right, We'll take care all right. Bye bye. Hey Randy,
I'm so sorry I couldn't get to you. I am
out of time. UH call me back next Saturday. You'll
be the first one on my list. I love to
help you out. Since he's got a radio issue show,
I'd love to get him, but uh, we gotta go.
Thank you, everybody, have a great weekend. We'll see you
back here next Saturday. You're listening to the car Show
