Speaker 1 (00:03):
Not a phrase. You got a Mercury Machevy to the
little sofa. Good afternoon. You're listening to the car show
on fifty five KRC, the talk station. I am Dane
Donovan from Donovan's Auto entire Center, located in the heart
(00:25):
of Cincinnati, Ohio, and here every Saturday to take your
car questions. The number to call five one three seven
four nine fifty five hundred. That number again, five one
three seven four nine fifty five hundred.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (00:39):
Man, we had some wonderful weather. Uh this week it
was great, and today it's back to gloomy and snowflakes
and man, it's just no wonder everybody's stick around town.
You know, one day at sixty I mean it's one
I think it was. Was it Wednesday or Thursday? I
think it was, uh Wednesday. It was just so nice
out and we got the grill out. I ran out
(01:02):
and got some hot dogs and hamburgers and grilled out
for everybody, and uh, you know, at work of course,
and uh, you know, it was just like, man, it's
just it's nice to get out in the outdoors and
uh it's coming soon, all right. So but we still
have to hang on. We still have a couple more.
I'm sure you know I have tickets luckily to opening
(01:26):
Day this year. And uh, for some reason, every year
I go, it always is freezing cold or snowing every
every every year. So but hey, beats a beats ah.
You know, I guess a bad day at the park
is better than a good day at work. Right, So
all right, again, I'm taking your phone calls, and I'm
gonna call five one three seven that number again, five
(01:48):
one three seven, fifty five hundred. I want to talk
about something that I'm seeing more and more of on
these newer cars, and I just wanted to bring it
to your attention because I'm cars towed into me left
and right, and so all your newer vehicles that have
a key fob. Right, So a lot of us we
(02:09):
have a key fob, and you know, we never get
it out of our pocket or our purse or whatnot.
We just you know, hit the unlocked button and get
in and and and go right. And that's great. But
what we're seeing a lot of is and you know
you should never ever because I mean you hear it
on the news just about every day, and in fact,
we fell victim up to it. This week. But you know,
(02:34):
far too often we leave valuables, our purses, our wallets,
we leave these things in our cars, and for the
life of me, you know, these these thieves know it
well enough that they usually don't go to the length
of busting out the window. However, my case, that's what
they did now on the Hyundais, and the key is
that the ones that they're stealing left and right. Yes,
(02:55):
they will break the windows and they'll steal it, and
they can steal it in about thirty seconds. Right. But man,
you hear it on the news. I mean almost every
day where these neighborhoods and these car lots and mainly
neighborhoods are getting hit in nine out of ten times
to the customers, like, you know, the victim there goes, well,
you know, the key fob was in the car, or
(03:17):
my walt was in there, or my purse was in there.
You know, this is this is twenty twenty five, folks.
You really need to make sure that you're locking your
I mean it's a push of a button, right, It
is so convenient. You know, years ago back in this
you know, the sixty seventies eight, I mean, you didn't
have that option. Right, So you had to physically put
the key in and manually lock it right. And we've
(03:37):
come so accustomed to all you gotta do is hit
a button and lock it and remove anything that's valuable,
you know, And but I just see it far too
often one and this leads me to where I wanted
to go with on the key fobs. Is I'm getting
cars to me toad left and right with people going, hey,
my battery was dead. I can't figure out why I've
(03:59):
got a new battery. I've got some type of electrical
draw okay. And I'm seeing it again time and time again.
And what's happening is people are leaving their key fobs
in their car. And when that does that, that keeps
everything awake, keeps everything what we call alive, right, all
the modules, everything, because it senses it within a certain distance,
you like, you know, when you get up to your car,
(04:20):
sometimes your dome lights might come on, or you're into
your lights come on and your are your exterior lights
pop on, right, and it senses that key. Well, you know,
I'm sure if you're like, well, Dane, I park my
car in the garage, that's fine, bring the key in
the house. Okay, because what it's doing is it's keeping
everything alive and it's keeping it awake, and then it's
running these batteries down. You're getting one to two years
(04:42):
out of the batteries because they're being strained, right, because
they're you know, they're being they're basically staying on all
night long. Right. And I mean I had an I
think it was an Audi this week that customer putting
several batteries and she could figure out why and you know,
we did electrical test, couldn't find anything wrong. Well we
(05:05):
put and uh so once we did, what we did
is we just left the key in there and sure
enough that's it had a drawl when the key was
in it. And uh. In fact, there was a gentleman
I follow on at social media. Uh great guy. He's
a great mechanic, and he talked about the same subject
this week as well. And I'm like, well, I feel
like I need to talk about this. So if you
(05:27):
have a vehicle that has a wireless key, okay, and
you need to remove it from inside the vehicle, right
because it will kill the battery over time. And on
this particular lady, I mean, yeah, she'd leave it in
all night and two or three days it'd be dead.
So just to just to think about that when you've
got a keyfob, lock your doors and take your key
(05:50):
fob inside because it will cause electrical battery drain in
battery issues and premature battery issues.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
Right.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
So it's something that I felt that we need to
talk about because again, I'm seeing it a lot more,
and you know, we can't come we can't become complacent
and just leave the key in there. I mean there's
times where I mean I had a lady one time.
I'm like, well, okay, can I have your key. She's like, oh,
I lost it. It's somewhere in the car. I can't
find it. I just leave it in there. I'm like, well,
(06:19):
let you know. So obviously she can't lock it because
she can't push the button, and so she just leaves
it unlocked with the key in it. So all something
they has to do is hop in and push the
start button. Right, So you need to make sure that
you're locking the car and you're taking the key inside
with you, even if it's in the garage, take it
inside because it needs to be around. Like, I don't know,
(06:40):
it's like every car is a little different, but about
three to five feet and then it'll keep the memory
alive and keep all the computers on, and then again
it causes battery issues. So but we had a young lady.
I want to talk real quickly. This is how petty
some of these car thieves are. Okay, you know, oh
(07:00):
I left my wallet, I left my you know, my
purse or you know, Heaven forbid a firearm or something
like that. Those things need to come out of the vehicle, okay,
every day, every night, but and certainly the doors need
to be locked. But we had over Thursday night. I
came in to work and we had a BMW that
had a busted window and called customer. Obviously we're going
(07:23):
to take care of it. Didn't see there was no
other vehicle that was messed with, just one brick right
through the back window. And I said, ma'am, can you
come up and maybe take a physical invatory see what
they took? And I am not lying. She said they
took a box of industrial like Costco Sam's trash bags.
(07:44):
That was the only thing that she could find that
they stole was a box of trash bags. They busted
this lady's window for a box of trash bags. So
what makes you know certainly going to take your wallet
or purse or any type of electronics or valuables or
lap tops or iPads. Right, So I just think, you know,
when I saw that this week, I was like, I
(08:05):
can't you know now I've got to spend all this
one hundreds of dollars to replace this lady's window because
of a bag of trash bags. I mean, that's how
petty some of this stuff is getting. So you got
to make sure that you take your valuables inside, you
lock your doors, and you take your keyfob inside the house, please,
you know, because again it rises insurance costs. You know,
(08:26):
if it happens at your house, you got to call
the police department. Now you're using those resources when it
could have all been avoided had you just brought your
valuables inside. So just don't become so complacent. Take your
valuables in, and just make sure that you know, you
stay safe and keep your doors locked. All right, So
alread again the number to call five one three seven
four nine fifty five hundred. That number again, five one
three seven four nine fifty five hundred. Phone lines are
(08:48):
wide open. Love to hear from you, so please give
me a call. Coming up. We have Mike. You're listening
to the car show on fifty five KRC D talk station.
This is fifty five KRC and iHeartRadio station.
Speaker 4 (09:00):

Speaker 1 (09:38):
Taking your car questions. The number to call five one, three, seven,
four nine fifty five one hundred phone lines again are
wide open. Love to hear from you again. I'm here
every Saturday to answer all of your car questions. And
again it doesn't have to be you know, sometimes people
might go, oh, it's pie silly or stupid. There's no
such thing, and uh, I mean that's what my job
is is to try to help and guide and uh,
(10:01):
you know, do what I can to help you with
the with your car needs. Right, you might be in
the market to buy a new or used vehicle. Yeah,
you might want to know about maintenance. You know, there's
there's everything that I mean, this show is wide open
to what you want to talk about when it comes
to cars. Other than that, you know, I'm out. I'm
(10:21):
out of the equation because that's what I know is cars.
So all right, let's go to the phones we have Mike. Hey, Mike,
welcome to the Car Show. How can I help?
Speaker 4 (10:30):
Hey?
Speaker 2 (10:30):
How are you today?
Speaker 1 (10:31):
I'm good, sir? How are you?
Speaker 2 (10:34):
I keep waking up? Old, I don't know what the
hell's the matter with me?
Speaker 5 (10:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (10:39):
Hey, I have a twenty eighteen Tsoul Yeah to all
of us. Unfortunately that it's got an automatic Telf adjuster
on the rear brakes, and every time you pull the
emergency brake on, it locks and breaks use up so
tight you have to raise the car up, take the
(10:59):
calibers off, screw that little piston back in, so the
breaks release, and I just wonder if there's any way
to disarm that.
Speaker 1 (11:13):
The only thing that you could do would be that
you could do would just just unplug the because there's
going to be electronic mechanism on the back of the caliber.
You could unplug it.
Speaker 2 (11:23):
Well, there's there's nothing electronic go into it. The only
thing there is a sure the emergency brake cable goes
to that little.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
Oh it's okay, So it's not electronic. No, okay, all right,
I'm sorry, I thought I was. I saw it was
an eighteen kiso. I just assumed it was electronic.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
Okay, I buy cheap stuff.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
So probably most likely either the mechanism itself is frozen
or the cables are frozen. But yeah, you can disconnect
the cables absolutely.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
Well, the emergency breaks fro works. Fine, I'll take the
calibers off, but screw that adjuster. Pissed it in, so
it's free. I pull an emergency brake on one time
and it's got tom lock back up. This has been
a problem since this thing was new, and it's only
got fifty five thousand miles on it.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Did you ever take it back to the dealer.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
No, I don't have time to run their. I farm.
I'm busy all the time. I buy a car and
I expected to run until I don't like it anymore
and junk it and get another one.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
I mean, yeah, I mean really the like I said,
I mean, typically on a setup like that you've got.
You know, you've got a cable that goes from the
handle to the back and then it splits off to
each side, and then you can you should be able
to detach it from the emergency brake mechanism itself.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Yeah. Every now and again, I'll get on the hill
I need to put the emergency No, I was gonna
sick a standard. Yeah, and then I got to go
home and get it up in the ear, take caliber
off and screw the pistol back in. Then it's free
to I forget and put the emergency brake on again.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
I mean I'm willing.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
I mean, do them set up?
Speaker 1 (13:11):
Yeah, I know. Uh, you gotta love the engineers today. Now,
when you push the piston back in, does do they
do they push in or screwing it?
Speaker 2 (13:21):
Screws in?
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Okay? And does it seem to screw in just fine.
You don't have any issues with it, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
No problem. Take turning even those fires, turn it right
back in.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
Huh.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
And then just every time you use the emergency brake,
it allows that thing to screw out again. It's got
that key in the back of the disc pads that
I guess when it goes backwards, it's allows us to
come down off the threads. And I was wondering if
I could grind that key off the back of you
emergency of the back brake pads, if that would keep
(13:56):
that that little piston from unscrewing and tightening the brakes
up again.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
I mean, so when you take that so okay, you know.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
It's got that little slot in that in that piston
that you can line up with the notch it's on
the back of the breaks Youugh. Well, I was wondering
if but if I grind that notch off of there,
if that will allow that piston to go back and
not unscrew like it does. Well, that's obviously what holds
(14:32):
it so when they when you release the emergency brake,
it comes back off the screw.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
Are you sure? And you know you know for a fact,
I mean I I don't off the top of my head,
you know, for that cable goes directly to the caliper.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Yeah. Yeah, that the the emergency brake works off a
shaft that goes right through the center of the piston
of the caliber.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
I don't know think I've ever I don't think I've
ever seen that design before.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Whether I always know if I if I've forgotten use
the emergency brick because the back wheels won't turn and
the front wheels won't go.
Speaker 1 (15:16):
I just don't know that.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
I just.
Speaker 1 (15:19):
I'm looking at this setup.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Man. There's a lever on the back that the emergency
brick cable goes to, and that's on a shaft that
goes I see it right through the center of the hub.
So what I'm thinking is that is actually the screw
in that that goes through that hydraulic piston. Okay, and
(15:43):
then that plate that you screw back to put new
brakes on or whatever you want to do that I
have to unscrew the lease the brakes. It's got a
notch that you can line up with the back of
the shoe, and I'm wondering if I grind that notch
off the back of the shoe. If that will allow
that that piston to just go back and not unscrew
(16:04):
to tighten up the brake.
Speaker 1 (16:07):
M I mean I think you can. I think you
could try it, but I mean something's not I think
the calipers are bad personally.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
No, there's nothing wrong with them. There's only fifty five
thousand miles on it and there's three quarters of breaks left.
I don't use brakes a lot, and it's taking apart.
It's all free. That piston or that piston part that
screws that are just the brakes, that's all free. Reaching
(16:38):
there those fires and just turning as easy as you want.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
So you put the emergency brake on and then you
go to you know, put it drive. You go to
go and this the back wheels aren't They won't move.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
Well, they will, but when you put enough pressure on
the front wheels to override it. Say like if you
got it up in the air and you do it,
go in there and the emergency break on and off
once or twice, then the back breaks. You can't take
a break or bar and tournament.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
And you said it was been it's been doing that
since it was new.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
Since it was new. I just try to remember not
to use the emergency break right.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
Yeah, I mean you could try to remove that notch.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
Of times my brain don't.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
Work, I mean you can try to remove that notch.
I don't know that. I think you're still gonna get
the yeah.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
Because there's got to be something that holds that piston
unscrew when that saf goes back to unlocked the brake.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
I get you think I can think of I mean,
if everything is free and everything's seems to be working,
try it. I don't think it's gonna hurt because you
know that that that that brake pad is not going
to go anywhere. I mean, it's not going anywhere. So
if you shave it off, I mean, look see if
it See if it takes care of it. Because if
if it's I if truly everything's working in free, then
(18:02):
may you know then yeah, maybe it is a flaw design.
Maybe it is a dumb design. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
I've talked to a couple other people that have had them,
and they've all had the same trouble, and there's just
so using emergency break court. He got automatic transmission, I
got a manual them a little engine drinking a lot
of compression to hold it back. On the hill.
Speaker 1 (18:24):
Yeah, we'll try it and then you call me back
and let me know if it fixed it. Okay, all right,
thank you sir.
Speaker 2 (18:32):
I'd probably get a second opinion. I'm my dumb idea.
Speaker 1 (18:36):
I don't think it's dumb idea. It's you know, the
Italian enginuity is like people call me Gedo all the time.
You know, it's Italian enginuity. You know, my grandfather was
from Bari, Italy, and uh man, he had some great
he had some great inventions. Man, he's a great man.
So try it and if it works, call me back.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
Okay, I thank you much today, Thank you, sir.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
You to have a good weekend. Oh man, I don't know.
Something's I mean, if it's been like that since the
day one, it's either the cable's bad or the calipers
are bad. I mean, there's not many other options there.
So all right, let's go back to the phones. We've
got Ray. Hey, Ray, welcome to the car show. How
(19:21):
can I help?
Speaker 3 (19:22):
Hey?
Speaker 2 (19:23):
Thanks?
Speaker 5 (19:23):
I I really enjoyed listening to your program.
Speaker 2 (19:25):
Thank you all the time.
Speaker 5 (19:27):
Okay, So here's what I got a I got a
keep down in Tennis chev Yourselvarado with a four point
three in it, and darn if the dipstick that rod
goes down into the engine, you know, the tube beg
gone if I didn't break that off the other day.
How hard is that to replace it?
Speaker 1 (19:45):
So you broke the plastic part of the dipstick off.
Speaker 5 (19:50):
Yeah, that, you know, the plastic tube, and you slide
the thing in. Broke it right off by the engine too, So.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
You broke it off flush?
Speaker 5 (20:02):
Well, No, the the tube itself, you know how it
kind of goes down in there and it takes your
right hand turn. It broke off right before that thing
actually goes into the engine.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
Okay, So it broke off at the engine.
Speaker 5 (20:19):
Yeah, about about about an inch away from the engine.
Speaker 1 (20:25):
Okay, so it most likely rusted off, so they're not then, Okay,
so then you just need to replace the dipstick tube.
Speaker 5 (20:32):
Yeah, how'd I do that?
Speaker 3 (20:34):
That are?
Speaker 1 (20:35):
Now, there's typically a bolt that's right kind of near
the exhaust manifold. There's a bolt there, or it's gonna
be towards the head or the block that holds it
at the top. And then there's just a ten millimeter
bolt that goes right into the oil pan and you
just get a new you'll get a new dipstick tube
and I'll have a new rubber O ring. But I man,
(20:59):
it shouldn't make you but thirty minutes to get that done.
It's it's not difficult at all. Oh okay, I mean
some of them, some of them might fight trying to
fish it down there, but no, it's not. It's it's
something that definitely you could do. It's not. It's not hateful, especially.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
On that edge.
Speaker 5 (21:18):
Actually, just just broke the daggone thing off and I
was messing around with it there, and uh, I was
listening to radio program and I thought we about going,
and you said you had a line open, so I'll
give you a call.
Speaker 1 (21:32):
Yeah, yeah, get it. I would buy one, buy an
ac Delco just because it's gonna it's gonna fit better
you can buy you know, if you buy an aftermarket one,
they typically just don't they don't fit right, they don't
bolt up correctly. So just buy one from the dealer.
Buy an ac Delco. They're not gonna be hateful, probably,
you know, twenty thirty bucks and make sure that the
(21:54):
dipstick tube comes with a new O ring. It should
and usually it's just two bolts. One at the very top,
probably a ten milimeter at the top, and then a
ten milimeter right there at the pan. And uh again,
they're not hard at all. You might fight the trying
to get the old one out a little bit because
it's gonna be rusty and you got to get pair
of plyers on it. But it's absolutely something you can do.
(22:15):
You can do it in your driveway and it's it's
not it's not difficult at all.
Speaker 5 (22:20):
Okay, See, I thought that tube was plastic. I don't
know why, but now some.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
I mean it could be some of them. I mean
most of them are metal. Most of them are metal.
All right, Well, thank you very much.
Speaker 5 (22:31):
Thanks, I certainly appreciate you're welcome.
Speaker 1 (22:33):

explaining things to him, right, and he's just like, oh,
well know it might be this, just take this medication.
(25:07):
You'd be like, I don't know if I'm comfortable with that.
How about I come in that would be best. So
all right, let's go back to the phones. We have
Randy from Wisconsin. Hey, Randy, welcome from the car show.
How can I help?
Speaker 3 (25:20):
Hi, Dane. I've got a twenty twenty DEI Convision. It
has all wheel drive. I've got fifty five thousand miles
on it. But it's been doing this for a long time.
The front end will shake sometimes when I'm accelerating from
a lower speed. It feels like it's on the passenger's side,
but I can't swear to that that was the front end.
(25:42):
But if I let off at all and then accelerate again,
it goes away. And now the reason I haven't taken
it into the shop is because it won't replicate. It's
just very very random, very random.
Speaker 1 (25:57):
So typically, but you said you notice it under acceleration,
and you notice it at low speeds.
Speaker 3 (26:04):
Correct, Yeah, I'm if I'm coming around the coming off
the highway and down the road to me, and I
slow down to make the turn, and then I accelerate again,
it goes back to fifty five. That happens fairly often there.
Speaker 1 (26:18):
Okay, but my wife.
Speaker 3 (26:20):
Says the same thing. It's always from a lower speed,
maybe maybe twenty miles an hour, and then you're accelerating
back up to fifty five to sixty and then they'll
get that shimmy in the front.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
And you said, if so, you'll get the shimmy, you
let off the gas, and then if you get back
on the gas, it's gone, yeah okay, And you said
it felt it feels like to you it's coming from
the right front.
Speaker 3 (26:43):
It does, but you know, I can't swear to that.
Speaker 1 (26:45):
It could be yeah. So typically so, uh, there's three
types of vibrations that are shakes that you get. If
you've got a high speed vibration, you know it's sixty
five seventy miles an hour, that is usually a wheel
balance issue. You if you have a vibration or pulsation
when applying the brakes, that's in the brakes. If you
(27:06):
have a shaking or vibration under acceleration, that is in
the drive train. Okay, So the issue that we're going
to run into is with it being all wheel drive,
one of those axles could be bad, and it's really
gonna be hard to determine which one's bad. I think, yeah,
(27:31):
I think it's probably in the transmission. Does it feel
like a does it feel like it's a shake or
like a or I mean it's a noticeable shake or
does it seem like a little bit or a vibration.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
It's it's noticeable, and it almost feels like like your
wheel's loose slightly.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
Lewis okay because sometimes sometimes an axle, right, sometimes an
axle at a certain speed, if there's play or slop
been it, you'll get it at a certain speed. That's possible.
But you know, my my wife had we recently sold it,
but shared a Yukon Excel and under acceleration. The thing
(28:10):
was it would it had a a transmission what I
call a transmission shutter, okay, and it would it would
shut or real bad and if you let off and
gave it gas, it'd go away, just like you're having,
just like you're experience. How long has this been doing this?
Speaker 3 (28:28):
Oh, it's it's four years old. I bet it's been
doing it three. But again, because if I can't take
it in and get it to do it, I thought
it was going to get worse. And I'm gonna be
able to take it in and show them what's going on.
And of course I'm getting close to the end of
the of the five or sixty thousand drive Dray war
so real nervous.
Speaker 1 (28:48):
So has Okay, So so at this moment currently nobody's
looked at it for this issue that you can't really
replicate it. It just happens randomly.
Speaker 2 (28:57):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
So that again that what with it being that random?
Typically with an axle, it's going to do it all
the time, right, Okay, So I'm leaning more towards in
the transmission and maybe what we call what I call
a transmission shutter. What has the transmission fluid been changed? No? Okay?
(29:21):
Do you know I don't every year making miles a
little bit different. Do you know when Buick recommends that
the transmission fluid be changed, if at.
Speaker 5 (29:30):
All, it must?
Speaker 3 (29:31):
Yeah, it has to be after this because every month
I go look at my service manual and keep up
on the stuff. I'm not behind on anything, okay, And
that wasn't in there.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
So Hondas are really really notorious for that too, where
they get a shutter and what happens is the fluid
itself it starts breaking down. Right, you've got clutch what
they call clutch packs, You've got you've got clutch gears,
you've got clutches in your transmission, right, and that fluid
over time will break down. And when it breaks down,
those clutch packs, those you know in the transmission, they
(30:02):
are slipping, right, and that's why you can't really most
likely that's why you can't really replicate when it does it.
It's just it's random. So what I and again Hannas
are notorious for this. They get what we call transmission shutter.
You change the fluid sometimes most of the time, once
sometimes if it's bad enough, twice. It's probably with it
(30:22):
being a twenty twenty, it's probably what we call a
it might be a CVT transmission. But what I would
recommend is find out exactly when the manufacturer recommends it. Okay,
number two, I would say at this point regardless if
I don't care, you know, you know, I had a
(30:43):
BMW in on Friday and the customers like, oh, that's
really weird. It doesn't say when I should change on
my transmission fluid. I'm like this because BMW's have what
they call lifetime transmission fluid. They don't recommend ever changing it,
which I disagree with. But yeah, that's neither here nor there.
So despite what the owner's manual might say, you know,
(31:04):
years ago, it used to be every thirty thousand, some
manufacturers sixty summer ninety, summer hundred. But regardless of what
the manufacturer says, I would take it back to either
your mechanic or the dealer and just say, hey, can
you please do a transmission service or transmission draining fill?
I don't I don't want to transmission flush. That's that's
(31:25):
a little bit different. A transmission service is basically dropping pan,
new filter fluid or most of the vehicles nowadays don't
have pants, they just have a drain. You drain out
the old fluid, put new fluid in it. A transmission
flush is a little bit more evasive. It's a little
bit I don't want to do all that. I just
want to drain what's in the pan and replace it
(31:48):
with new fluid. And regardless of what the manufacturer says,
I want you to try that first. That is going
to be the cheapest, simplest thing that you can do,
because I mean, those acts are probably you know, to
replace an eye. You know, let's just say you're like, hey,
Dane's sayings like I mean, even if you brought it
to me, I'm gonna be all right, Well, we can
start with the right front. If like Dan's still doing it,
then it's the left front. Dan's still doing it then,
(32:08):
you know, then then it just becomes a racket.
Speaker 5 (32:11):
You know.
Speaker 1 (32:11):
And the fact that it's typically an axle is gonna
do it all the time, It's not just gonna do
it randomly. So that's why I think it's in the transmission.
You can also ask them, uh, now, only a dealer
is gonna be able to do this find out say, hey, listen,
I'm getting describe it as a I'm getting a transmission, shutter.
(32:35):
Can you look to see if there's anywhere can you
see if there's a software update for this particular issue.
There might be they might all be experiencing it and
there's an update for it. They go in, they go
hook it up to a computer, update the module for
the transmission, and boom, you're done. Ask them that first, Hey,
is there any type of uh, you know, I'm getting
(32:58):
a transmission, you know, shutter? Is there any type of
software update or a what's called a TSB, a technical
service bulletin, Because if there's enough of them out there
experiencing this, the GM will put a TSB out and
that way it helps the mechanic find the problem quicker.
So just go, hey, listen, is there a software update
(33:18):
or a TSB for a transmission shutter or any type
of transmission problem with my vehicle? And if they say no,
they go, go okay. Can we proceed and do a
transmission drain and fill or service and then report back
to me and let me know if anything's changed. Now,
I will tell you my wife's GMC yukon EXL. She
had a shutter. I changed the fluid twice and it
(33:40):
never went away, never got worse, okay, but it never
went away. So I don't want you to become discouraged.
But with but her, I mean her car was a
twenty eleven, yours is a twenty twenty. There's so much
more electronics, so much more software in there. And nine
out of ten times when somebody's experiencing some type of
issue with these cars nowadays, it's plug the computer up,
(34:01):
hook it up, do a software update, and boom you're gone.
You're done. So ask them if you've got a TSB
or a software update for you know, the transmission shutter,
and if not, go okay, can you please do a
transmission service or drain and fill, and let's see let's
see if things change either. Hopefully they change. Sometimes it
(34:22):
can potentially sometimes worse in the condition. Just so you know,
that is a potential. That's why I don't want to
That's why I don't want to do a flush, because
a flush is too evasive. Let's just do a little bit.
Let's just treat it with some medication here. Let's see
if things change. You might say you might, yeah, you know,
(34:42):
you might sit there and go dain. It's not it
still does it, but not as much. Right, we want
to see if anything changes, and if if it does,
then okay, maybe we're onto something and then you know,
maybe we you know, in twenty thousand miles or take
thousand miles, change it again.
Speaker 3 (34:59):
Okay, all right. I was just looking up here in
the in the manual while we talk, and I always
go by the normal wear and tear because it were
very easy on it. But the severe doesn't say to
changed it until seventy two thousand miles. But I'm gonna
take your advice. I'm gonna go get that done.
Speaker 1 (35:13):
Yeah, because I mean, you're you know again, if it's
a TSB or a software update. You're probably pay a
couple hundred bucks if if if they if they don't,
they're like, no, there's nothing in there. Then do the
transmission service. You do it a little premature, but you
may be preventing a catastrophic failure. And again, a service
is going to be a couple hundred bucks. You're not
breaking the bank, and you know, and hopefully one it
(35:37):
fixes the problem, and two you're doing your being proactive
and changing your transmission food a little early. It's not
gonna hurt it, you know. So that's what I would
do very much. All Right, Randy, you have a great weekend. Yeah, absolutely,
call me back with sim results. Thank you. All right,
taking your phone calls and I'm gonna call a five one, three, seven,
four nine, fifty five hundred coming up. We have Randy

to the Car showlymphicty five KRS, the talks station. I
had to turn the fan off. It's hot in here.
I don't know what's going on, but all right again,
(36:50):
let's go back to the phones. We've got Randy. Hey, Randy,
welcome to the car Show. How can help?
Speaker 2 (36:55):
Oh?
Speaker 6 (36:56):
Well, I hope you've been helping. I wouldn't take too
much of your time because I knew it was a
waiting Daniel.
Speaker 3 (37:01):
I got to two thousand and.
Speaker 6 (37:02):
Five Chevy Malibu and the radio was in the lock position,
and I need to know how to get it on
the lock.
Speaker 3 (37:13):
They say, it's the deal work there.
Speaker 1 (37:18):
I didn't know the gms. I didn't know that Honda
is the only one that I ever knew that that
would lock. So what was the radio replaced or the
battery die or what's going on?
Speaker 3 (37:29):
Well, i'll make it quick.
Speaker 6 (37:32):
My son cleaned the car out one night or this
is my wife's car cleaned it out, and uh, you know,
did the arm or all or whatever thing. But he
left the windows down that night and left the headlights on,
so the battery ended up being bad. So I replaced
the battery, and then when I put the new battery in,
(37:53):
I didn't the keep control. Now keep in mind, I'm
an ASC server, fight Hevy truck and mechanic by trade,
so I'm not you know, trying to make this more complicated.
But anyway, so I checked it, and I've replaced the
heat control module because it didn't work and need it work,
but it didn't well, so I replaced that, but I
(38:16):
had to pull the radio out to do it. And
I thought, well, well, I got the radio out, so
I went to pull the pay because I know the
CD player didn't work and it's so I want to
pull them pay and put the radio and and everything
works fine except when I turned the key on to
start it, and it's got that uh well.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
We call it a heads up display.
Speaker 6 (38:36):
There tell that you're feel mileage and all that without
that radio work and that doesn't come on and it
says lot. So the enter manual says, I have to
take it and have the new radio burned in. But
it's a two thousand and five, and I'm wondering.
Speaker 3 (38:54):
If there is an alternative.
Speaker 6 (38:57):
You know that some shops can do it.
Speaker 3 (38:59):
Some shops, Yeah, I can.
Speaker 1 (39:00):
I can do it. Can I don't know. I can
do it. I just need I I've I can figure
it out. Just can you, Randy? Can you call me
on Monday at my shop and just and I'll walk
you through it. I can give you you can go.
I can give you the number if you like. Okay, Uh,
(39:23):
there's there won't be a charge or anything. Just I
just running out of time and there's a process.
Speaker 6 (39:29):
I just what shot do you want me to call?
Speaker 1 (39:32):
And uh, it's yeah, it's uh. The number is seven
three one eight nine eight nine seven three one eight
nine eight nine. And just when you call it, just
say hey, Dane told me to call. I called him
on the radio show, and I'll I'll walk you through it.
Or you can I'm at the corner of Montgomery Road
(39:52):
and Dana, or you can just swing by my shop.
I'll come out there and i'll do it for you real.
Speaker 3 (39:56):
Quick, because one over in pleasant Ridge.
Speaker 1 (40:02):
Yeah, well I can meet you there if you If
you call me on Monday and say, hey, Dane, I
can swing by Ridge at you know noon, I'll just
drive down. I'm only three and a half miles away.
I'll just swing down there and i'll knock it out
for you.
Speaker 3 (40:16):
Yeah, we'll see.
Speaker 6 (40:17):
I'm still running uh maintenance.
Speaker 3 (40:19):
For people, and I'll tell you it's better for me.
Speaker 6 (40:22):
Just take it over to Dana in Montgomery Road that
way and convenient.
Speaker 1 (40:28):
I'll be there, all right, I'll see you, I'll see you.
I'll see you this week, all right.
Speaker 6 (40:33):
I don't know if it will be Monday, but that's okay.
Speaker 1 (40:36):
I'll get you taken care of any thank you. I've
never seen one do that so but I know I
can do it. So all right. Our last caller here
is uh my son Declan Declan. How are you, sir?
Speaker 6 (40:52):
Hi Dad?
Speaker 1 (40:53):
How are you buddy? Are you getting your spelling words done? Yeah?
All right, So so I heard I heard you have
a joke for me. Yeah all right. Well look why
was the car always tired? Why was the car always tired?
Speaker 3 (41:18):
Is that?
Speaker 1 (41:18):
What is that what you're asking? Yeah, I don't know.
Why was the car always tired?
Speaker 6 (41:24):
Because it never took breaks?
Speaker 3 (41:28):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (41:28):
Because it never took breaks?
Speaker 3 (41:31):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (41:32):
All right, well good, I like that one. All right,
We'll get those spelling words done. I'm gonna be home shortly,
all right, love you buddy, give me some ice cream?
Be oh, man, hit me up for some ice cream.
I had had to get that in there. Now, I
guess I'm gonna have to now get those spelling words done.
(41:56):
I'll bring you home some ice cream. You there, see
you buddy? All right? Man, you talk about total manipulation.
Jeez Opete say, hey, Dad, I'm gonna tell you joking,
we can bring me some ice cream home. So I
know I'm gonna look like a bad father if I
don't bring up some ice cream. So luckily we've got
(42:17):
graders on the way home with a nice drive through options,
so I guess I'm gonna but of course, I you know,
I have two older boys, and you know I can't
come home with just one scoop of ice cream for him.
I'm gonna have to get them something. So that's a
thirty dollars visit. So all right, everybody, but listen, I
really do appreciate the phone calls. I'll be back next
(42:39):
Saturday to answer all of your car questions. Again. Please
pull remove your valuables from your vehicle, keep your key
fob out of your car, lock your car doors, and
it'll prevent so much headache for a lot of people. Okay,
that is my that is my story for today. It's
my soapbox today. So again, everybody enjoyed the week. Hopefully
(43:04):
we have some warm weather coming our way. I'll be
back next Saturday answer all of your car questions. You're
listening to the Car Show on fifty five KRC, the
talk stations
