Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ione Sky, good morning. I love you holding a boom,
but I mean I love that generation to say anything.
I Sky's new memoir, which I gotta say, is really
stirring it up. It's called say Everything. You don't hold
back in this memoir. Was that the intent?
Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yeah, well that's what a memoir is, hopefully. I mean
most of them. You know, you hope you're honest and
don't hold back. I mean I have barely mene a
memoir that didn't do that, but mine is definitely quite
juicy and very very honest.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
I wonder as you, as you travel and and and
push it in media, are you starting to regret anything?
Because there's some I mean, are people just going over
your relationship history, your timeline or your relationship history, uh,
and just hit me on everything.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
I mean the only thing I regret is because I
did the movie Say Anything with John k Second maybe
ten years later. We never slept together, but ten years
later we had a fling and we remained friends. But
the media is saying that it was because like the
sex wasn't good, So I wanted to clear up that
he was a good lover. We just decided to be friends.
(01:15):
Because you don't always end up with someone after you
see did that with them. That's sort of one of
the things, but bigger than that, sure, it's it's always
you know, you run the book by people, but some
people you just don't know. You hope that you portrayed
them in a way that's loving and understanding, and I
think I did. But yeah, it's it's nerve wracking. Not
so much about myself, because I feel I can handle myself,
(01:37):
but I you know, I definitely wanted to protect people,
but you know, I hope that I did.
Speaker 1 (01:43):
Ionie Scott, did you send John Cusack what you were
going to put in the book before it was published?
Did you have a heads up?
Speaker 2 (01:50):
He did read it, and yeah, and he liked it.
But he yeah, he read it. I think it was
already locked, as they say, but I sent it to
him early before it came out because we're friends.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
I heard he said, you you made it sound like
that the sex was meant when he was really kind
of into it. I read not true.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
Well, yeah, I liked it. I just I just we
just stayed friend. But anyway, I got to give him
a call because the press went crazy with that. And
it's funny they say you don't know what people are
going to highlight, and I had I never anticipated that
that would become a highlight.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
Well, so you got him, Uh, you get he's fawn
and over you, but you're fun over Keanu Reeves and
he doesn't wan anything to do with you. And that's
much earlier, right, No, but good because.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
He was a gentleman, because I was kind of you know,
like innocent, da da da da. But he it wasn't
that he was Maybe he was a gentleman and he's
so sweet, but I was I really did want. I
would have.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
Loved to everything at that.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
What's wrong with him?
Speaker 2 (02:54):
You know, I don't know. He just want wanted what
he wanted. I know. It's not not with I noticed.
It's just like not everyone's for everyone. I loved, not
Dylan at one point, not loved. I went on a
date with Matt Dillon and he wasn't interested. But it's like,
you know, he likes a different type. It's not that
you're not good, it's just.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
Not the you grew up. Did you let me ask you?
Did you grow up in Hollywood? So you were like
you were near these stars all the time.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
Yeah, it was funny because it wasn't. I didn't grow up.
I grew up in a more of a you know,
lower middle class neighborhood that was sort of funnily enough,
looked almost like anywhere USA, but right in the middle
of Hollywood, on one of those streets that you go
below a certain street and gets gritty and you go
above it and it's neighborhoodly. So it was a funny
(03:42):
thing of being in Hollywood. I knew some famous people
just because my mom did a little bit. She was
in the music scene, so you know, she had some
friends who were famous. But it wasn't like one of
those like big Beverly Hills iconic Hollywood families where there
was like all the kids of but there were are
some kids of some famous musicians. It was more like
(04:02):
that famous music kind of scene.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
A little bit.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Well, and you're willing to talk about your father and
the relationship, right, I mean your father is Donovan, the
Great Donovan, you know Sunshine Superman for crying out loud,
and he didn't acknowledge you till what seventeen and why?
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Yeah? And to be honest, well, when I first started acting,
I didn't want to talk about like I didn't know
people were interested in my father and they would say,
how was it growing up with your father? And I
would say, well, actually, I grew up with my mother,
which was great, but I didn't grow up with my father.
And then off then they started pulling that out because
(04:43):
I as much as I don't agree with him not
being involved, I feel protective. I didn't want to hurt
his legacy or him and I think it's since it
was a generational thing, it's not right. But I think
he just couldn't really grapple having two families. He had
his family after my mom, And do I think he
should have figured it out? Sure? I know him, you know,
(05:07):
people are complicated, Yes, but yeah it's hard. It's hard,
and I don't forgive that. But I'm still curious to
get to know him before he you know, he's getting old.
I want to still get to know him.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
So what is your relationship with your father?
Speaker 3 (05:23):
Now?
Speaker 2 (05:24):
I've seen him, you know, over the years, like every
few years. He lives in Ireland at a moment with
his wife who's been married to forever and ever. And
I know my half sisters, my brother and I see
him occasionally. So I might see him in the spring
it's strange every time. It's like it's like meeting, you know,
getting to know someone, and but I do have a
(05:46):
part of me that wants to and there's some tenderness
there and I'm sure he feels terribly guilty and he's
kind of can't handle that very well. So we don't
really talk about it much.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
Will he some sky? Will he will your father Donovan
read your new memoir?
Speaker 2 (06:06):
I don't know. I think my sister, one of my
sisters will. I actually don't know because he's kind of
like me. We're both a little afraid of like believe
it or not, like big feelings. And you know, I'm
someone that if I get a scary email, I'll have
my husband. I'm like, will you read this? Is it okay?
Like I see some similarities, So I think he's just,
(06:27):
you know, he's nervous about stuff, so I have a
feeling he might not, whereas my mom is like my
biggest cheerleader.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
Yeah, you're you're married to ben Lee right now?
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Right?
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (06:38):
And he has to be the coolest cat in the room.
Just watch you write this book and tell these stories?
Right god? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Oh he was my number one, Like he was the
person that was supporting me, and yeah, he just you know,
we have a lot of the same friends. We knew
each other for a long time as friends in the
music world, and we had a lot of crossovers, so
he knows me really well, you know, parts of it
of course, the way it was so hard for me
(07:05):
to get over my first relationship with Adam Horovitz.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
My god, another one I love and.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
I know, so when we divorced, I was so young,
we both were so young. It was hard to lose
a very good friend and family member. We became like,
you know, we were really cloths, his family, my family.
So it took me a long time to let go
of that, and Ben was patient. Luckily I was able
to attach to someone new. And Ben is like terrific
(07:36):
and I wrote so nicely about him, of course, but yeah,
he was very He's he's so excited the book's doing well.
He's just like such a supportive person. So he organizes
me because I'm sort of spacey.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
Ione, I'm reading a headline from the Post Say anything,
star Ione Sky cheated her ex husband Adam Horovitz with
a woman. Who was that woman? Was she famous? Can
I ask a book.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Tell me well, there's this woman called Alice Temple who
was famous in her own way in England and Jenny well, no,
Jenny Shimizu was later, but yeah, uh probably wouldn't know
Alice Temple.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
But no.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
It was the time when like Madonna was, you know, bisexual,
and it was just like in the air and I
just went to that and went running and I was
like college age experimenting. But unfortunately I was college age
and married at the same time.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
What is it? What is it?
Speaker 3 (08:34):
Ad rock ione sky wedding? Look like who shows up
to that? And a best man? Baby? Does anybody tell
me about that?
Speaker 1 (08:42):
Well?
Speaker 2 (08:42):
It was in santay Nez Valley with gorgeous It's sort
of where like Reagan had his ranch. It's beautiful part
of California of nineteen forties house ranch style, beautiful, I was.
It was very looked traditional. They were. He was wearing
like a top hat and a beautiful suit. The Beastie
boys were the best men, you know, his fanmates. Yeah,
(09:05):
and then in the crowd, you know, it was definitely
little stars today. I guess River Phoenix was there. Anthony came,
which is so funny, and I don't think Flee came
Anthony and his mom because we stayed friends and sure.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
Who else was there a little little little horsey named
Paul Revere out Front part.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
Out Front, Yes, of course, of course.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
The one thing I'm noticing with you and these and
these various relationships is that, you know, there were tough relationships,
but it seems to me, at least my opinion on
these on these guys is at the very core, they're
emotional fellas and they feel a lot. I assume that's
what you're attracted to.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Right, well, yeah, Like even the Chili Peppers, you know,
they were post punk. They're so like, you know, macho
aggressive in some ways, they're like hippies at heart, right
those guys are you know, all love. I mean, Chad
is more of like jocks type, but all the rest
of them, but he's also super sweet, Chad the drummer,
(10:08):
But they're all like they're just like want to want
love in the world. They're just like hippies inside, and
we had a lot of tenderness. It was the gnarly time
for him. But you know, and then the Beast you
boys as well, just they want good in the world
and they're just good, you know, absolutely good.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
It's a good thing going through here.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Say Everything. A memoir from Ione Sky. You are the
you are the face of a of a generation. Good
luck with the book and we'd love to haveing you
on the show. Thanks, thanks, Ione, thank you.
Speaker 2 (10:39):
I appreciate it.
