Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, Morning, it's Queenny Cantara picks one oh six.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Hey, it's me. I got Jake for you. Here you
comes Jake, you know with queen named Canterra. Morning, Quinny
Cante Jake Busy coming at July from Malibu, California. Hello, Albany,
New York.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
Awesome brother, Welcome to the show Man.
Speaker 3 (00:17):
Thanks for the time. Jake. Hey, so let's get it.
Let's get get it out out of the way out front.
How hard is it doing press for the movie rust
with the tragedy that's you know, associated with.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Some of it, well, you know, it's it's definitely a
little bit challenging because we don't want people to get
the wrong idea, and we don't want people to you know,
we're this whole entire project was finished out of respect
and love for Helena and to you know, to address
that point. We're all the proceeds every single time. I
(00:47):
want everyone in the world to see this movie, because
I know there's people who have more of a curiosity about this.
If the movie has been talked about so much, I
don't want people to feel bad or embarrassed to go
see it. What I've what I need to tell everyone
is is that all the proceeds, every dime goes to
her kids and to her widower. Not that that could
(01:08):
make up for a life, but finishing her last works,
having her her friend be the one to shoot, and
she knew how Helena shot. So the movie's beautiful, it's gorgeous.
It's an art piece. And if you go see this movie,
you'll see what a great talent she was. And I
(01:29):
know that's it makes it even worse, but it's she
was incredible and an incredible person. I have friends that
were friends with her. I didn't know her because I
wasn't there when that happened. I came in later on
the second round. But yeah, all the proceeds go to
her family. And it's a beautiful film, and go see it.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Well said Well said in the movie opening on Friday
video on demand, as well as she Tara it's Jake
Busey that he was in Christmas with the Craigs.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
Bro it's one of your staples Christmas the crowd, big
part memorable, but bit part right.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Yeah, Well, you know it's when when when when the
director says, hey, we're all going to have fun and
improv and here's and your character doesn't have many scripted lines,
but he's like, don't worry about that. We'll have fun
on the set and and it'll be great. But then
when you're standing there with Tim Allen, Jamie Lee, Curtis,
Chief Mayorn and Dan ackroy those guys are all professional
hand bones, so like, you can't get a word in.
(02:24):
And I was just I basically was overran by their
egos and personalities and their sort of, you know, desire
to be to get attention, and so I was like,
I'm just going to shut up what was on the script,
deliver my role, and and I had fun. I had
a great time. But that's to be to be in
(02:45):
a group like that. It's just there's there. I'm the
young guy. I'm the guy that people don't really know,
and here's Ackroyd and Alan and Curtis and their cheet
just doing his old spiel and it's wonderful to be there.
Starts gun didn't make the move.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
It's actor Jake Vucs in the movie Russ coming out
Friday and also on demand on Friday. But you grew
up with a famous dad, and you grew up in Malibu.
Does you love your dad? By the way, can you
do you ever get starstruck? Is there anyone who moves
the needle for you?
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Jake, oh Man, I get starstar I'm terrible. I get
real starstruck. When I was eight years old. In fact,
it's we were doing my dad was doing a movie
in Savannah, Georgia, and I had my birthday. So the
whole cast and crew at lunch on the movie. They
served birthday cake afterwards, and I brought a piece to Jody,
who she was sixteen years old playing a burlesque dancer
(03:39):
in the film. And so she's wearing the whole neglige
with the teddy, with the garters and the little robe.
Looked like she was straight out of a pithouse magazine
and all the makeup. And I walked over to her
and handed her birthday cake and I said, Hi, Jody,
would you like the piece of my birthday cake? She
was so sweet. She said, oh, Jake, that's really sweet
of you, you know. And then and I ran into
(04:00):
her when we did that movie Contact, and I was
like twenty five jag Oh my god, you're taller than
I am now, you know, and the picture five feet
tall and I'm six three. You know what? Anyway, when
I was a kid, I was, you know, considerably short.
But yeah, it's been a fun life, you know, yeah,
(04:21):
very blessed. You know, I'm assist gendered, white Caucasian male
with all the wonderful blessings of being broke at fifty
years old. Because the film industry tang aped through all
the covid R and everything else, and so it's a
crazy mixed bag, baby, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
I mean you are you sober? Were you down and
out for a while?
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yeah, a while back, like a twenty eleven, I had
been in a band for about three years, and I
had fallen on hard times and then my girlfriend and
I broke up and the house burned down while we
were both gone, right, and and so then I had
to rebuild, you know, and it was a tough time
to rebuild, because it was right after the.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Financial crisis market.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Crash, that's a freaking financial thing of two thousand and eight,
and the movie industry was like, I just I couldn't
get work. So it was a real tough time. But
you know, I found sobriety, got back on my feet
and wound up getting married and having a kid. And
you know, she's twelve and a half now and just
a beautiful girl.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
Ought it.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
I'm so happy to be a dad. We had a
great dinner last night, Italian food. It was amazing.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Plus Jake plus Jake play little things. It's why.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
So you gotta love that.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
You might have lost your money, but you didn't lose
those good looks.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Bron Well, you guys are too kind. I gotta find those. Yeah,
I gotta find the ego to match the good looks.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
Back to that that period of time real quick? Did
I read that Robert Rodriguez had something to do with
you pulling out of it?
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Well, he was a big help because and I, you know,
we it wasn't that we had a discussion or anything,
but he was aware. And we had mutual friends. And
I had known him since we both started out way
way back, and we were both doing movies in the
same small independent film company, and we we were running
(06:19):
into each other in the editing rooms and all that stuff,
and and and you know, before he was really huge,
you know. And but then but then, yeah, shortly after
I'd found my sobriety and everything, I auditioned for the
TV series from dust Tilton, and uh, you know, by
the luck of the gods. You know, I got on
(06:39):
that show and we did that for three great years.
Is fantastic show.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
Did a lot of people know you? So a lot
of people know you as from Starship Troopers.
Speaker 2 (06:50):
Yeah, Ace Levy from Starship Troopers, the second male lead,
and I was right there with Casper and Denise Richards
and Dieta Meyer and uh it was that was wonder
That was a long time ago. But yeah, I tell
you what, people still talk about it all the time.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
Of course. Man, Yeah, it's a classic cult classic.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
You gotta love it.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Interesting. An unknown, very unknown Dean Norris was in the movie,
and I remember thinking, who's this old guy? Tour guys
just got a bit part of the movie and now
now look at him. Isn't amazing because we were all young,
cocky fools and we were like, who are these older people.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
That are from uh from uh Breaking Bad?
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Right? Yeah? He was. He was the cop, the the
dea guy. He's won Emmy's and freaking Cable Awards. He's
the guy's like a huge celebrity now, and he was
just you know, he had one scene in Starship Troopers
is like, you know, what was your zim?
Speaker 3 (07:50):
What was your zip? Code, Jake Busey, when you were
in high.
Speaker 2 (07:52):
School nine zero two six five, I know how close
you were. I take you, what am I? What's your
what's your zip code? Where are you?
Speaker 3 (08:05):
I was growing up? I was three two seven five
the sticks of New Hampshire.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
One in the house.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
Your ZIP has a zero at the beginning. That's going
way back in time, one Hampshire zero.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
We're also w's out here with w P yax. You're
probably f P y xually.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
Yeah, west of the Mississippi, we go by K.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
That's right, Jake.
Speaker 4 (08:31):
Did you hang out with any Willy's kids growing up?
I know your dad was close with Willie.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
Well, Willie's got a lot of kids from a lot
of wives. But the duration of time with which we
were around Willy was when he was married to Connie.
And she's like my second mom and so Connie to
this day we still talk a lot and she I
just love her to death, and and her her two daughters,
(09:00):
Amy and Paula Carley, and we we yeah, we were
kids together. We grew up together, playing together and on
the road because you know, remember the whole like Willie
and family.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
Yeah, on the road again.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Well, we were like the and family and we traveled
with them.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
That's great.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
And you know tour buses or you know, we're being
in Vegas and like, let's rent a boat for the
day and go like hang out. And I remember swimming
in Lake Tahoe and it was a beautiful, hot, sunny day.
I dove in the water and took my breath away
because the water was like thirty three degrees and uh,
and yeah, we've had I've had a lot of great
(09:38):
memories and and those girls are fantastic. In fact, Amy
is like running Willie's whole program now, she's like the
show coordinator. And uh, Paula, she she lives right near
her mom. There. They're all in Austin. I just loved
them there.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
I think Paula on Uh is she a DJ at
Willie's Roadhouse. I think she's a DJ's channel.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
She is.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
Yeah, yeah, hey listen, she takes a lot.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
She is a lot. They're they're real busy and uh
and it you know, but I see the thing is
is I never have even met Lucas because you know
that Willia and my dad had kind of like I
don't know, people changed to get older whatever. They kind
of just stopped hanging out as much and the responsibilities
get different. And then Willie had you know, got a
(10:26):
new wife that really she she wanted to clean house
and get rid of like the friends of Connie.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
Yeah, well they bucys in the world.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
A lot of life living though.
Speaker 3 (10:39):
