Speaker 1 (00:02):
Who let's talk Giants football, brought to you by Curtis
lumber your local full service home center and Lumberyard. And
now from the New York Giants pre and postgame show,
it's John Schmelk.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Good morning, gentlemen. Johnny.
Speaker 3 (00:21):
How's it going, John?
Speaker 2 (00:23):
I'm all right, guys, how are you?
Speaker 3 (00:25):
We're good? At another fourth quarter collapse. We're blaming table
for this one.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
It's funny. The first thing I said on the postgame
show yesterday was different coach, same game.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
I mean again, I was I was watching the Bills game,
no offense, so what was what? Did they look any different?
Could you tell it was a different coach?
Speaker 1 (00:47):
No?
Speaker 2 (00:48):
No, I mean they were a little bit, a little bit,
a little bit more aggressive maybe on like fourth downs
and conversion. They ran the ball well, I did, like
the white uniforms at home. Was not coach related, they
you know, But no, I mean it didn't look to me.
It didn't look that much different. And I told you, guys,
I didn't think it was gonna look much different.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
That Jamis picked late in the game. Was that his fault?
Or was that the receiver's fault?
Speaker 2 (01:17):
They were very shady about that after the game. I
was talking to Tikey Barbara after the game. He's putting
that on the wide receiver that he kind of didn't
finish his route the way he was supposed to. My
tap the said he liked his quote after the game
I believe was that Jamis was being aggressive. I like that,
but I have to look at the tape to see
exactly what happened. That reads to me. When he looks
(01:39):
at the tape, he's going to see that the receiver
didn't do what he's supposed to do. But what I'm
sure he'll be asking him today, they'll be you know,
he doesn't He doesn't want to air out his guys publicly,
so they'll probably never say, well, James jail Hyatt took
it looked a heat for that. And then in the
post game it's always like, you know, your pants when
Jameis wins.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Its kind of like a gun slinger. You know, John
smelt the Giants go ahead.
Speaker 2 (02:05):
John, sorry about that. He about hit about four passes
earlier in the game that were dropped interceptions that could
have been picked. So it was kind of one of those.
It was coming and it was just a matter of when.
So it came at the worst possible time because of
some of these giants, and that's what happens to them
this year.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Well, so when this dark back is he gonna pass
protocol this week?
Speaker 2 (02:25):
He was out at the game pre game on the
sideline and stuff like that, So I think the the
thought is that you hope he's back this week. He
is still technically in protocol. He probably supposed to go
and pass a couple more tests before he's able to
be back on the field. So I would expect him
this week. But with concussions, you never know.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
They don't don't pull people into that tent on the
sidelines for anything. You're going to the ten now for anything.
He's not. Just seems annoying, right, I mean, I guess
it's what do they used to do? Just put you
up The trainers used to work on you out in
public right back in the day.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Yeah. Yeah, And look sometimes they still will if it's
something as simple as like having up an ankle or
something like that. But I think a lot of it
is I think this was part of a negotiation with
the players, if not explicitly, I think the players were like, look,
you know, this is kind of like a hit the
thing wherever. You don't want people knowing exactly what's wrong
(03:20):
with the type.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
Of deal ten tracks and well, yeah, I think I think.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
It's part that. I think it's also And then on
the other side, the reason the teams are like, okay,
let's do this was then they the other team doesn't
know what's wrong with your players too, right, so you
kind of keep that secrecy about it. So I think
that's why more and more stuff happens in the tent.
And that originated in college, by the way, that started
a college thing, and then the pros kind of adopted it.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
Yeah, now it's now there's a toilet for Deion Sanders.
It's true. Yeah, he's got it. Depends ted dependent. Yeah,
all right, John, here's here's a We're trying not to
ask you this too much, but who's on this short
list to be the next head to the Giants? And
according to the Athletic Bill Belichick is not on that list.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Uh yeah, And I and I think I told you
guys last week that I didn't see that happening. Yeah.
So Jay Glazer had a report over the weekend, and
Jay's usually pretty locked in on stuff. These are the
guys he mentioned and these are most of the things
I mentioned gee last week too. Mike McCarthy was a name.
Clint Kubiak was a name for Chris Schuler, the defensive
(04:26):
coordinator for the Rams, as a potential name. Steve Spagnolo
was a name. Antonio Pierce was a name.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
Chris sounds and doesn't it Johnny Chris Shula.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
That's interesting. Yeah, yeah, you know, he he's I don't
think he's a grandson. He's related Don Shula somehow. I
don't know how exactly, but look, he's he's been a
great defensive coordinator. Sean McVay apparently loves him. He's been
singing his praises all over the league in terms of
what type of coach he is. Lou Ana Roumo, the
former Bengals defensive coordinator that was with the Giants at
(04:57):
one point, was another name that got brought up. So, uh,
Blazers did say no college guys. That was one thing
he did bring up in that conversation that he had
on the Fox Free Game show.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
So yeah, those are most of the names that I
saw pop up. And honestly, guys, it's very similar look
that we talked about last week. So that's what it
looks like. Would you have to see what coaches shake
free after the year too, right, Like, is anybody that's
currently employed that maybe gets let go that becomes a
valuable candidate? Right, So that's something you have to think
about too.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
What if I mean I figured this too, Like what
if the Steelers part ways with Mike Tomlin, like just
we're just if we've had enough that would be attractive
for the Giants, wouldn't it?
Speaker 2 (05:38):
I would think? So he's you know, I would put
him into Mike McCarthy category, right, And the coach has
had a long, long range of success that has established themselves.
You remember, the Giants and the Rooneys are connected by
marriage as well the owners of the Steelers, so they
clearly have connections there too. So yeah, I would imagine
if that happens, or even I know it's probably more
(05:59):
Packer fans and Packer ownership. But Matt Lafour is also
somebody with the Packers that has gotten some heat this
year with the way the Packers have played. Winning yesterday
obviously will help him. So that's another name I would
I would look at, but you know, I don't know
what the interest level would be there.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
I'm gonna drink it. But you think the Chiefs, You
think Patrick Mahomes will ever get to another Super Bowl? Yeah,
you do, Yes, I do. It's hard to do, man,
And everyone's like Mahomes is gonna pass. Brady Longs might
not even get there again. Man, they had to, I
mean they got they got soft.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
No, they might not get back this year. And look
at the playoffs Starre today, the Chiefs are not in
the postseason, which is crazy when you think about it, right,
I mean, he has a long cur ahead of him.
He's gonna play for a long time. By Man didn't
get back.
Speaker 3 (06:47):
He's he doesn't have Brady's body. He's got a little
bad dad belly, he really does. You know.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
Well, you know, I think he's started eating the avocado
ice cream and the avocados hoast every day, and then
maybe he can get to Tom Brady's.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
Got it going right at your night Shades No tomatoes.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
By the way, if you bring up the Chiefs, actually
reminded me Matt Naggi was another name which I wouldn't
have a lot of interest in, But that was another
name that got brought up by Jake Lazer.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
In that report and not to beat down the coaching list.
But it's not like super Sexy. I McCarthy's kind of
a boring name. I mean, I get it.
Speaker 2 (07:20):
No, it's not there. Yeah A look, I think Shule
is gonna be one of the hot coordinator candidates. But no,
there is no Ben Johnson this year right where you know,
he's been a coordinator for a long time and people
have been lining up to try to get him and
he's been waiting to come out and become a head coach.
That there is no There is no Ben Johnson and
(07:41):
this year is group released in my opinion.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
All Right, what's next for the Giants?
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Uh? They go to Detroit to take on the Lions
next Sunday. That's going to be a very challenging game.
The Lions offense is going to be good, their defense
is very good. That is going to be a very challenge.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
And there if the lines are pissed off because they
just lost to the Eagles last night, don't then Hope
check in with you on Friday. Thanks, thanks for thanks
for talking to us, John.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
I have a great week about.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
John smel gets Quinn can't try to pick one.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
I'm sick
