been doing this for decades. Comeon, nice Steve, you're on with
Quinn and kin Tia. Mister Hackett, thank you Steve Hackett. How are
(00:23):
you, sir? I'm very verygood. How are you doing? We're
excellent? Whereabouts are you right now? Well, I'm just got quite London,
England at the moment. It's anice, funny day. And how's
it goes for you? Guys?We we we were looking at some of
your Instagram pitches. It looks likeyou you get to a lot of beautiful
places. Is that the music takingyou there? Oh? Very often?
(00:43):
Yeah, the music has taken mearound the world a whole ton of time.
But we also get to visit placeslike istan Bold. Just been there
with my wife and and back.So we had a few days there and
that was extraordinary. So tell medo you how are you still friendly with
members of Genesis? I assume,And do you talk to them? Yeah,
(01:04):
I see them from time to time. Last one I spoke to was
Peter Gabriel because he was the originalsinger with Genesis. So yeah, we
get to connect up from time totime. I get to have a word
with Fill from time to time. But you know, most most of my
life is spent on the road.I'm doing almost continuously, living out of
(01:29):
a suitcase, and it's my choice. It's not a position, you know.
I love doing it. I lovethat idea. I love living on
the road like that. We're goingto see Steve Hackett coming to the Heart
Theater at the Egg October tenth.Tickets and information at Hackett soongs dot com.
Now this is the You're still onthe Fox Trot Had fifty tour in
(01:51):
which you're doing the Genesis album.Right, that's why I'm doing that album
and it's entirety it's gone. It'sit's number too in the rock charts in
England, so that's really nice.It seems to be doing very well.
It seems to be doing it allover again. I mean Fox Truck was
the number one album in Italy allthose years ago, and I just played
(02:15):
there again. Fairly recently and theyjust love it all over again. And
I've been to tons of places playingthis Europe, Scandinavia, but I'm bringing
it to the States for the firsttime. Doing that album in its entirety,
you understand how close is into thestudio recording or how close do you
want it to be. Well,it's very close to I like to do
(02:38):
authentic versions, but then I alsolike to add things like we have extra
woodwind and Brah Gurtasy of Rob TownsIn one of the guys in the band
who's an extraordinary player, and theyare. They are an incredible band.
A couple of Swedish guys Joannis RyanGold on bass. It was with the
Flower Kings, Mad Sylvan who doesan extraordinary version of Peter Gabriel and Phil
(03:05):
Collins, and a guy I workedwithout love, Rickie Havens. He's able
to do all of those voices, which is extraordinary. They are a fabulous
band that they're full of They're fullof great heroic players. What can I
tell you? This is a visualand audio experience we're talking about here right,
(03:27):
Yeah, absolutely, it is agreat show show. I wish I
could sit there in the audience andjust enjoy it myself. Steve Hackett's legendary
Genesis guitarist and playing the Art Theaterat the Egg October tenth. Were you
ever did Mike Rutherford ever ask youto become a mechanic and did you ever
want to be a mechanic? Hedid? What I want to be one
(03:49):
of his mechanics. No, no, no, no. Mike and I
played for many years in the sameband, and he had great success with
that. I wish him great luckwith that, you know, But I
think Genesis was Genesis was the realdeal for us at that time, and
he moved on to that seller careerwith I think that's his priority. Whereas
(04:12):
for me the Genesis stuff, Istill love the material and I want to
celebrate it lies because it's classic andit's from an era when John Lennon said
he considered Genesis to be true songsof the people. So that stuff that
we were doing in nineteen seventy two, seventy three, I think is that's
the time when he picked up onus. But why, mister Haggett,
did you why did you leave Genesisin seventy seven? What let you leave?
(04:38):
I'll tell you what it was.Autonomy. This is a small word,
small but with big implications. Theproof is that I had a hit
album when I was still with theband, hit fellow albums. It made
it very difficult, but I wastold that I couldn't make any more fellow
albums when I was still in theband, so I had a joy to
(04:59):
make. I thought my allegiance hasto be to music itself. Even though
I thought Genesis was probably the bestband in the world at the time,
I thought, no, nobody ownsme. I have to be free to
do what I do, to getto work with guys like Britchie Havens,
Brandy Pawford, Steve Wah, massesand masses of people. Is that?
(05:21):
Why? Is that why Peter Gabrielleft too? Like he wanted autonomy?
Or didn't he That's the same reason, the same reason of the band wanted
to own him Lockstock and Barrel, and he wasn't interested in that. So
both Pete and I are not interestedin being owned by other people. Well,
(05:41):
ladd of guitarists, I've learned alot from watching you who who did
you watch when you were when youwere young? Or listen to you?
Well? I could think of twohere. I was straight off. You
know, I really loved watching JimmyHendrix, and I also loved watching Andrews
Segovia. They were poles apart,of course, you know, but I
took an influence from both that, and I think that that's what makes a
(06:06):
great guitar player, when there's jazzand rock and all kinds of different genres.
You know, you're clearly one ofyou know, who counted as one
of the most influential guitar players inthe history, no question about that.
We're lucky to have you come totown on October tenth of the Heart Theater
and Albany bringing the Foxtrot at fiftytour. Thanks so much for the time,
(06:27):
mister Hackett. Thank you so much. Love talking to you all our
