Speaker 1 (00:00):
Uh so it is free Comedy Friday today and we
were just talking. Man, we go back with Carlos Mencia
twenty plus years. It is crazy how long we've known
each other. Carlos for minum, bro, dude, it is. It
was before Minum and C four.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
I was I was doing dtdy jokes here when nobody.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Knew about that.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
It's crazy how long we've known each other. But I
just found out that I'm way more evil than you are.
Well that, well, why is that?

Speaker 4 (00:28):
Because you said that you kind of get happy when
you see somebody cut somebody off and then you go
down and there.

Speaker 2 (00:34):
I get happy when.

Speaker 4 (00:35):
I see somebody cut somebody off and then you drive
down and their cars slipped.

Speaker 3 (00:41):
I didn't want to say it. I didn't want to
say it's say you listen, I.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
Agree, what I what?

Speaker 4 (00:46):
I what?

Speaker 2 (00:47):
I smile?

Speaker 3 (00:47):
What I smile at that? Yes? I would, Yes, I was, hey, listen,
don't come me off sick. Sorry listen.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
The last time it rained really hard, I'll never forget.

Speaker 4 (00:57):
I was on the two ten freeway, uh passing Lake
in UH passing Dunia, California, and this car was going
about eighty five ninety miles an hour and I was hydroplaning.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Yeah, and I was only going about fifty five. Yeah,
so you knew it went up that he was looked
up because I let him pass me.

Speaker 4 (01:15):
You know how you see the joy driver and you're like,
all right, yes, I'm not even slow down.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah, I'm gonna get past the Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:22):
This was the one where I was like, I'm not
gonna go fast. And then so when I saw him, now,
there was no part of me that because these rides
that he was he was hydroplaning, just.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Like and if you do that, you know that he knew.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
He was like I could drive, I couldn't.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
Sorry, bro, I'm sorry, Bro. Where it goes Man's crazy?

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Yeah, it's you know what I mean because because we
live in this country where like it's kind of like, look,
I'm overweight, and if you do a joke about.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
Me overweight, I'm not gonna get mad. Now it's like
you're fat shaming you.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
Health.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
This isn't just making it says that people like sky
over here, I can't you.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Can't make a joke.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
Get to feel apart.

Speaker 4 (02:14):
But here's the here's the problem, Like that is that
we're supposed to be happy because we're happy. We're not
supposed to be happy because you woke up and there
was no traffic and everything was perfect. That's not the
way the world works, you know, it's it's different. It's
like I sort of God, five people so far today
since I woke up have apologized for the clouds.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Normally not like this.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
I'm like, it's you don't deserve this, Carlos, you don't
deserve this.

Speaker 4 (02:44):
We're normally not like homeless people are like, oh what
a day, Get out of your.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
No, it's that wide work. Kids have anxiety.

Speaker 4 (02:58):
Why the kids have anxiety xiety because they don't know
what it's like to live a real life anymore.

Speaker 2 (03:04):
Everything is just like ohing on, what's that gonna happen?
And I was triggering you know what I mean? Illegal aliens.
I can see them when we kick them out. They're
not mad.

Speaker 4 (03:16):
I gott we complain about this country, American. You don't
hear that from documented aliens. Definitely, the way we kick
him out, you haven't seen one angry person looking at
the like when I see people getting to port, I
can see in the rise that they're looking at like
the camera, thinking like I'll see you tomorrow.

Speaker 5 (03:37):
And I'm coming back the whole thing. I'll come back
in three weeks. I'm to see and then i'll go.
You know, thinking back to SNY like I love that atticude.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Not I mean alien took my job? How bad was
your interview?

Speaker 5 (03:57):
Can you talk about this job somebody that can't speak states?

Speaker 2 (04:07):
How does this guy take a job?

Speaker 3 (04:09):
It's so funny.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Can you tell us a little about yourself? But last,
but I want to see the interviews with the other paper.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
It's so true because everybody's a victim. That's the mentality, man,
it is. I gotta see Carlos. You're performing at the
American Comedy Company. I want to make sure everybody knows where.
We haven't even mentioned that yet. We just got right
into it. I gotta go see a couple of shows tonight,
a couple of shows tomorrow night. American Comedy Company. Gotta
go see Carlos. Now, let's talk about this man. Yes,

(04:44):
what what has been going on? I mean I haven't
seen you in a little while, But what's been going
on in your world? Your life? What's been happening? So
what happened was about you know, after after minum insia
and all the like, all the hate that I got.
That was just I didn't understand it. I'm not a
sensitive person.

Speaker 4 (05:02):
Yeah I can't tell. I mean in the sense that
you can't hurt my feelings. Yeah, you know what I mean.
It's just not I live in the greatest country in
the world. My worst day, my personal worst day, is
better than ninety nine point nine percent of all humanity's
best day.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Do you know what I'm saying?

Speaker 4 (05:23):
Like, my worst day is like, oh my god, can
you believe that they canceled my flight and I was
in first class and all I have to city coach?

Speaker 2 (05:32):
You know what?

Speaker 3 (05:33):
That does?

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Suck? Really what I mean?

Speaker 4 (05:35):
Yeah, those are my American problems. Yeah, I've been stuck
in Dallas worth five dollars and I just I don't understand,
especially comedians, why comedians are so sensitive. Like I don't
understand how somebody that goes on stage and eviscerates a
couple in the front row can do that with not

(05:55):
a problem. But then when Carlosmancil makes a joke about
him and goes, well, that wasn't funny. You know what,
It's like everything is sold And I think that a
big part of it is I grew up with a
huge family.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
I have eleven sisters and six brothers.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
Dude, that's a lot. Raise, that's a loss. Oh my god.

Speaker 4 (06:16):
My father's favorite thing to tell people when I introduce
them is they'll they're looking at my dad and go,
did you guys really have eighteen kids?

Speaker 2 (06:26):
And this is his favorite thing to say. His mother
never had periods, He just had.

Speaker 3 (06:29):
People kind of accurate, kind of accurate.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
Did you wait?

Speaker 1 (06:38):
I think that sound sounds but it's a big piece.

Speaker 3 (06:42):
I'm doing the math. It works out.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
You want you want to you want to feel, pull
out your.

Speaker 1 (06:47):
Phone, Okay, type in forty Okay.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
Okay, we're not good at mako eighteen okay, okay.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
Forty times eighteen divided by twelve divided by twelve.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
Cool sixty.

Speaker 4 (07:02):
That's how many that that's the amount of months you
know what I mean? That my mother that gears that
my mother was pregnant. My god, non stop.

Speaker 5 (07:11):
Just adding it up like that, literal years literally years, six.

Speaker 2 (07:14):
And four because it's forty weeks for pregnancy.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
Yeah, kids two, we're talking about six years.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
Yeah, yeah, six years.

Speaker 4 (07:23):
That's crazy of literally being in the state of pregnancy.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
That's a lot.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
No, no, sir, did you ever get new clothes or
because you're number seventeen, was always hand me down.

Speaker 4 (07:35):
Well, first of all, eight women were born in a
row before me, so there were there was a point
in time where I lived in a house with nine
women and me and my father, I would have reached out.
At the time, we lived in the Mount of Projects
and we lived in this three bedroom house. Downstairs was
a bathroom with a toilet upstairs, so we had one
one shower.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
Come on, no, how do you do that?

Speaker 4 (07:57):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (07:58):
One shop?

Speaker 3 (07:58):
You got to figure it out.

Speaker 4 (07:59):
I guess time I got old enough that I kind
of poked my dad and I was like, Dad, you know,
we we have to go downstairs and use the water
holes and the scene downstairs to do our morning thing.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
What kind of man are you, dad.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
That you oh, you don't even get it.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
So the next so that next morning he woke up.

Speaker 4 (08:17):
We knocked on my you know, because my sisters would rotate,
so we never got to go in the bathroom. So
my father goes, you better give us time to take
a shower today or you're gonna see.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
What's going to happen. And so they didn't open the thing.

Speaker 4 (08:30):
So my dad walks downstairs, gets on the toy on
the he hops on to where you know we wash
the dishes. Yeah, I'm holding his hands in the sink. Well,
he's dropping the deuce. It's the scene to prove a point.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Yes, he's looking at me, going they're going.

Speaker 4 (08:56):
Way.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
My sisters come down and it's get some poppy mommy.
So the next morning, my mom knocks on our doors.
You have ten minutes, that's it.

Speaker 4 (09:11):
Okay, now, okay, So I'm sitting there going my plan works.

Speaker 3 (09:15):
Yeah you want, Carlos, when.

Speaker 4 (09:18):
Except ten minutes isn't enough for my dad and me
to take. Yeah, so now I'm watching you ain't naked.

Speaker 2 (09:26):
Ass bad. You went in there with him who back
in the day needed squirrel tox you know.

Speaker 4 (09:34):
Yeah, he was hanging and this was way back so
it was bushed.

Speaker 2 (09:41):
Grooming.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
No, that's disturbing.

Speaker 2 (09:43):
And he would turn around to talk to me.

Speaker 4 (09:45):
He would just like get the shower, look back, turn
around and his things fleeing in God.

Speaker 3 (09:51):
God, right there, I love it.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
I'm like, I'm like nine.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
Eight, Carlos, No wonder you're so hardened. You know my life,
I mean, this is how you grew up.

Speaker 4 (10:02):
Just don't understand But what I did was what happened
with me was I said to myself, look, I'm not
stealing people's jokes, but the fact that the comedy community
just jumped on this bandwagon, it's got to be me.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Yeah, there's one common denominator, really me.

Speaker 4 (10:20):
So you you started going to therapy, and I started like,
because you at that moment, I was either going to
become a really insensitive human being that was cruel and
angry and mean things about other people, or I was
gonna say to myself, you know, what kind of a
human being do you want to be?

Speaker 3 (10:38):
Okay?

Speaker 4 (10:38):
And so that's why you can go online and you
can't find anything online of me saying anything negative about
other comedians or whatever, even the ones that have tried.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
To hurt me or want my career hit the worst.
And you know, that's that's where I was.

Speaker 4 (10:51):
And so a couple about a year and a half ago,
I did I did a special It's called carl Smincia.
H here I am. You could see that right now.
I think it's not to be Roku and all that stuff.
And so I've just gone through a not a rebirth,
but a transition into what I want to do and
the funny thing is for me is that I'm edgier
today than I ever have been, but I don't piss

(11:14):
people off anymore.

Speaker 1 (11:15):
So wild And there's also a new, entirely new generation
you and going like this guy's great.

Speaker 4 (11:23):
Well, the beauty is is that kids today they don't
really watch stand up stand up, right, they watch little clips, yes,
so they don't they even when they say, oh my god,
that's funny, they're not laughing like you can see like
twenty year olds, oh my god, look this is funny,
and they keep passing it on, but nobody's laughing. It's

(11:43):
just like they're actually saying loll instead of laughing. But
then when they come see a show like mine where
it's just constant laughter, constant laughter at the end, they're
just like, I've never I've never witnessed, I've never.

Speaker 1 (11:57):
Laughed at what I didn't know. This is what it is, right,
It's really awesome. That's cool, man, it's really really cool. Well,
I'm happy for you, Carlos. I'm glad everything's going well
and against me. You can go see him this weekend.
Couple shows tonight, a couple of shows tomorrow night at
the American comedy company and sorry about the rain.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
Dude.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
That's not that's not our fault.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
Brood to see carlos Man dude

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
