Speaker 1 (00:00):
Do you want to jump over to the Legacy Retirement
Group dot com phone line and talk some high school
football regional.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Semi final games tonight?
Speaker 1 (00:08):
And with us is the guy who is has forgotten
more about high school football than most of us know.
It's Marty Banister and you're on Are you on Spectrum tonight?
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Marty?
Speaker 3 (00:18):
That is correct, sir. I'll be over in Western Ohio
for the matchup between the Wayne Warriors and the Troy
Trojans over Troy Memorial Stadium.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
All right? Is that is that D one that is Division.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
One Region two. Yeah, that's gonna be. That's gonna be
a very good football game. Wayne has the Ohio state.
Why not recruit jamiir j Jmier Brown a lot of
offensive talent. Troy is nine to two coming off their
opening round and win Lastic. Should be a very good game.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Yeah, mister Brown's the reason that the whole nil is
going to happen for for for high school kids.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
A little bit more than that, but you're right, that's
a pretty big deal.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yeah, he was the the impetus behind that. Anyway.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
So let's talk about Central O games. A couple of
weeks ago, Marty, I had you on and I said, Hey,
would you be surprised if Upper Arlington made a deep run?
And I kind of thought that they might. You said,
you would not be surprised. And here they are. They
knocked off Pickerington North last week, and now they've got
Pickerington Central tomorrow night tonight.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
And that's to win where they won last week. I
saw pickering At North a couple of times during the
regular season, and I think Nate Hillers does a very
good job with that program. They are always a very
talented team. But to go in there and win like
Oprah Arlington did last week, it's very impressive. And I
mean they've got their defense is one of the big
reasons they are where they are, and it rows up
(01:40):
last week. I know they gave up twenty seven, but
still you were able to keep the game workable thanks
to your defense. And they've shutouts in two of the
last three weeks. So, by the way, have the Golden Bears,
And now they're going to turn right back around and
go right back down thirty three to pickering in Central.
Take on a team. Let's play some very good football.
Was one of the quarterbacks in Central Ohio, the Tigers
(02:01):
of one eighth straight with the Roco Williams at the
quarterback position. Jeff Lamonica's team, they love to play defense,
and this will be a big challenge for us that
it should be a great football game.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Yeah, and they've played some great football games in the past.
I mean, was it a couple of years ago they
had a triple overtime?
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Yeah? And those are when you think of brand names
in Central Ohio high school football. I mean, those two
are right on the list. I mean it maybe if
you can put a list of ten schools together, those
two are in the top five. There's a question about that.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
And the winner of that game already gets rewarded by
playing either on Tangy Orange or defending state champel on
Tangi Liberty.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
That's the other game tonight. That's really interesting.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
Yeah, what's behind door number two? Right? I mean, and
that's the second time in two weeks those teams will
have played. Remember they closed out the regular season with
each other back on October the twenty seventh, and Orange
won that game twenty six to fourteen. Won their playoff
opener last week over Berlin forty three to fourteen. But
we talked about this couple of times earlier interseason. Guys,
(02:57):
Liberty lost its first three games defending state chance, still
trying to put all the pieces together. Well, since those
first three losses they won eight of nine and last
week they shut out all in Tangy seventeen nothing And that,
I think tells you what you need to know about Liberty.
This one's gonna be fun, fun to watch.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Tight. Yeah, who do you like in this when you
think Orange stays undefeated?
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Oh my goodness. The thing about having to play somebody
for the second time in.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Two weeks hard to do.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
Yeah, it is, And I mean John Sansbury and that
coaching staff there are tremendous and I mean not the
west Roder isn't at Orange. But well, I hate to
be pinned down on anything. I just think it's going
to be a heck of a football game.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
What about r J Day and to Sales?
Speaker 1 (03:39):
He had a monster week last week against I think
Ashland and they've got They've got Maslin, So no rest
for the weary there.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
Yeah, I mean four hundred and eighty two yards an
unofficial school record last week. The think about the Sales,
They know how to win games. Their last three games
they won by a total of eight points. And I
mean when you're at this time of the year, that's
that that's a great mindset and a great ability to
have to win these type of football games. It's not
often Masline have to travel in the postseason, much less
(04:08):
come to Central O' High interesting and play a football game. Yeah,
and I mean you talk about a packed house. I
mean the folks at the Stales do a fantastic job
Tom Newbert and the staff there of hosting playoff games.
It's a whole different animal when Masline comes calling. I
mean there's I think there's like eleven radio stations and
three or fourteen different newspapers and websites that cover them.
(04:28):
That's going to be a heck of a heck of
a game that I two real good quarterbacks. You mentioned
our RJ. Day and and Maslin has Manny Patterson who
last week only through fortsdown passes and was twelve to thirteen.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Yeah, that will be fun. That will be a fun
one to watch. Speaking with Marty Banister and the Bishop
Watterson Eagles hosting Try Valley that the Scotties come into town.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
I mean, and again Watterson, I just think that there
at a different level than everybody else right now, And
I know that's not breaking any ground with that statement.
Try Valley is a very good program coming out of
them Skiing area, but it's just a different type of
animal facing Waters and I don't think anybody will be
surprised if waters And rolls on that one tonight.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Yeah, and it could be a high scoring Both teams
like to light it up, so it could be a
high scoring affair tonight.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
There are a couple other games if you want me to,
if you mind me mentioned and I think are interesting.
We mentioned Mats One coming down to play the sales. Well,
there's another power program from the state coming to Central
Ohio tonight. Stupid Goal plays over at Licking Valley tonight,
and again this is the one to the playoff format
where we're at now with the buys and all those things.
Licking Valley hosts the Big Red. They're again one of
the legendary programs in the state at eight and two,
(05:35):
and Columbus Academy is home tonight nine and two. Team
they play this will make Mike Campana happy. The only
team in the state of Ohio whose high school last
whose high school nickname is buck Eye. Nelsonville York.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
There we go. There you go. Yeah, that's a great,
great piece of trivia.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
There, Marty Banister, our guest will flip gears and go
to the college game Buckeyes tonight night game u C
l A. Probably they're like, what a four touchdown favorite.
I guess the big question is, do have some potential
for some rain? Is this finally the night that we
see the Buckey's running game take off?
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Well? I hope so. I mean, you're getting to that
point of the season where you kind of really need
that to step forward. But I mean I've heard people
wonder why they're not playing, whether or not there's this
explosive offense. I mean, this is just one man's opinion.
Having seen them play in person this year back in
September when Pile went up there and played, is just
a I mean again, this is a great football team.
(06:32):
I think Brian Day is doing the perfect thing with
this team, just kind of slowly building and getting every
and getting everything in line for what's going to happen
when we get to the last week of this month
and then into the postseason and any there. If they don't,
I mean, I just I just think that this is
the best football team in the country, and I don't
know how anybody can think otherwise. Quite frankly, I mean,
(06:52):
if the running game doesn't step up, well, there's still
the best team on the field of Marrow.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
Yeah, I mean, it's it's nitpicky of me to say that,
but that's the one thing you look at with this
team is okay, you feel like that they're just they
have another gear that they haven't hit yet.
Speaker 3 (07:07):
Right, And and again, as I said, I think the
way they're doing it is perfect. I mean, you don't
this whole nine or eleven game pre up to what
happens in the on the last Saturday November. I mean,
you're just making sure that you're all your dots are
grow the t's are crossed, and eyes are dotted, all
those things. Yeah, I don't. I mean, and again you
(07:29):
can say which one about UCLA having thrown big numbers
on the board, but coming to Columbus under the light
at night, it could it could be the weather could be,
as you said, very entertaining. And he's, you know, from
the west coast and making that long trip. I think
Ohio State Roles Marty.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
I was talking with Matt McCoy a couple of days
ago about the collision course that is Ohio State and
the Indiana Hoosiers potentially for the Big Ten title game,
and a game that it's kind of bizarre because it
could very well could be number one versus number two,
and a game that doesn't really matter, right because no
matter who loses, that game is more than likely still
(08:06):
going to be in the top four and definitely still
in the College football playoff.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
Do you do you try to win that game?
Speaker 1 (08:11):
I know it's kind of intuitive for coaches and players,
but you know, do we see a steady diet of
Lincoln Keenholts in that game just to make sure no
one gets hurt?
Speaker 3 (08:18):
No? I think you try and win it. I mean,
you you want to be Big Ten champions. That's on
your goal list every year. I mean I don't. I mean,
I don't think you go in there and think, well,
we'll just we'll just be happy to come out of
there with however however we come out of them. I mean,
you're talking momentum, you're talking, and if you're talking for Indiana,
I mean you're talking that's a program maker. Sure win
that game. I mean it's I mean for everything that
(08:39):
Kurt Signetti has done and said, still they win that game.
They I mean, you think that doesn't establish them, Well,
of course that does. And if you're Ohio State, well,
I mean, obviously you would have won the Big Ten.
Regardless of where we're at now these days, that's still
an important thing.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
We saw what the number one seed last year, and
that was Oregon. It didn't really help them much. Are
you a fan of receding after that first weekend, that
first weekend to play that first round of playoffs.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Absolutely, I think that's the way you should do it. Now,
I wholeheartedly agree with that
