Speaker 1 (00:00):
Together here. You know how it is. We come back
from a break and it's like out in the hall,
like running around, well on borrowed time.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
You know, we had to disinfect certain things. We'll just
like that. Holy cow, man, don't get me started on
all of that.

Speaker 1 (00:15):
Let's bring in he is the ABC Entertainment correspondent Jason
Nathanson joining us now, and Hey, Jason, Happy Tuesday.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
How are you man? I'm fantastic. I just got back
from a week off, so I'm fantastic. Did you're not?
I don't know. Well, yeah, it says usually yeah, that's
a but no. But I like that.

Speaker 1 (00:34):
That's optimism because you can go one of two ways.
As it sounds like you already know when you come back,
you'll be like I need to go back to this
and then or hey, I'm good to be back.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
What did you do? Anything fun? Hopefully?

Speaker 3 (00:46):
I just went up the coast a little bit here
in California, so not exactly a staycation, but not far
from home.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Okay, that was nice because the weather was beautiful.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Though. Now this week come back and it's like I
think going to be one hundred and five tomorrow. Oh
oh see, you know I did this getting into Oh no,
I'm sorry, it's going to be one hundred and three tomorrow,
but by Friday it's going to be one hundred and eight.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
Oh boy, Well, I was in that last week.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
I was in Vegas doing the show the whole week,
so I was writing the hundreds there with you. As
far as you know, the temps go and here here
in Columbus while I was gone, it was heat index
in the hundreds. The temps were in the nineties mid
nineties with that crazy humidity, and man, I'm telling you,
it's brutal.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Like it makes it.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
It makes a huge difference, as you know from being
in Vegas. When they say it's a dry heat, huge,
it makes a huge that humidity. And thankfully you know
that's not the issue, although I will say the past
couple summers we have had that humidity start to creep
in here in this area, which is not the deal
that we made. The deal that we made was that

(01:55):
it's going to be a dry heat. I like it,
and we don't have the humidity. So hopefully the humidity
stays at bay because when you when you mix the
two together, that's when it gets just brutal, dude.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
You get one hundred degrees with the humanity we're talking
to Orlando. You start getting Miami and all that, forget it.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
It is. It's impressive.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
You can't even you can't, you can't function outside man.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Now because I'm looking at our community right now. Let's
see what it is. Ninety seven degrees right now. The
humidity is.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
At thirty two percent, so you know, not horrible. Yeah,
definitely manageable, no question about that.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
So big news here in this city and a lot
of cities I guess around the US. But this fight
between Disney and Direct TV. I am a DirecTV customer.
I still have the satellite and all of that. I
do have streaming, all the different streaming services as well,
So right now I am sol when it comes to
a whole lot.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Of programming right now.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
And then there were a lot of a lot of
bars here, Jason, there is a lot of.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
Bitching and moaning.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
Saturday night or Sunday night when I was watching, they're like.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
What, we're at a bit of particular game the game,
and like.

Speaker 4 (03:03):
Sorry, dude, we can't get it, like we are. They're
a Direct TV bar like you know, which is almost
all of them here. You know, the owner's getting pissed
off because people are like, all right, come on, let's
go watch it somewhere else. It's like you got people
walking up leaving.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Your establishment to go somewhere else to watch it. Yeah,
So what is the latest with this chase and that timing.

Speaker 3 (03:21):
By the way, it's not a mistake, No, they know
exactly what they're doing. So this is this is the
fight between Direct TV and Disney, my parent company, which
all the Disney channels, the ABC, ESPN, all that kind
of stuff is Dark The Latest Today.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
This happened on Sunday, The Latest Today.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
The CFO of DirecTV, Ray Carpenter, got on a call
with media and some other people and basically said, Hey,
we're gonna We're gonna fight as long as we need to.
Amid this fight, they're they're not backing down. They're not
gonna pay the money that Disney wants and take any
concessions here that they want what they want and they're

(04:02):
going to fight for it. And what they want is
a couple of things. One, they want a reduction on
the cost of the channels from Disney. That's that's always
the case. But as we've seen in these and they're
called carriage fights. As we've seen in these fights over
the past couple of years. A lot of it also
has to do with bundling and streaming services, right, because

(04:23):
that's the way these things are going. And direct TV,
which is the third largest of the satellite TV or
cable the outlets out there, Directed V only, it's the
third largest. Land is eleven point three million customers, you know,
in a country of over three hundred million.

Speaker 2 (04:41):
I mean, that's that's a small drop in the bucket.

Speaker 3 (04:43):
And they've been seeing their numbers go down and down
and down, and.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
So what they want to do.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
Usually, what they're trying to do is they're trying to
get some of this stuff bundled in. So if you
say you're a subscriber DirecTV, you also get maybe a
Disney play Us in there as well, or an ESPN
Plus in there as well.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
That's what happened last year with Charter Spectrum.

Speaker 3 (05:05):
Disney and Charter Spectrum had the same kind of thing, right,
They were going back and forth.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
That lasted two weeks, that outage.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
And in the end, the Charter Spectrum customers ended up
getting Disney Plus an ESPN Plus bundled in for free
to their charter spectrum cable. Now now it's a little
different here.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Direct TV is not.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
They said that they're not exactly going for that, but
they do want to cut down on the number of
channels that they have that they're forced to buy from Disney,
because you know, with Disney comes in Disney Channel and
that GEO and the whole suite of cable channels that
maybe they think not everybody likes. But they're also fighting
for their lives at this point because of the streaming

(05:47):
and the way people are cutting the cord and going away.
They feel that they have to get as much as
they possibly can for their customers. That's not just here,
here are the channels, right, It's got to be more.
So they're looking for what they're calling skinny genre based bundles,
which gives customers a little more choice when it comes

(06:10):
to the stuff, where they can package news and family
and sports with what they get.

Speaker 4 (06:16):
That's almost's that's kind of the model Sling TV is using.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
That One of the reasons I love them.

Speaker 4 (06:22):
Because they've got a blue package and an orange package. Well,
the orange one fit my sports loving and news loving side,
whereas the other one is more you know, focused on entertainment,
children's stuff, and more family programming. I mean that.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
Sounds like a model.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
A lot of these places are going to start moving
with going forward.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
One hundred percent.

Speaker 3 (06:44):
And one of the things that was blocking a lot
of people from cutting the cord was a lot of
that sports stuff. And now you also have this upcoming
big sports thing where you have Disney and Warner Brothers
joining forces with I forget who the other one was,
there's one more in there, and they're gonna have this
big sports thing that they're all gonna do, and that's

(07:05):
gonna take even more away from a company like Direct TV.
I mean, you used to have have to have Direct
TV for football, right, used to have to have that
shone and all that kind of stuff that that's no
longer the case. R right, so YouTube right, so you know,
the sports thing is no longer the consideration and sling.
Sling is something that when I first cut the cord,

(07:26):
that's the first thing that I had, and I loved
it as well, and I really loved it. This was
maybe even ten years ago. At this point, it was
twenty five bucks a month and it was great. Now
sling is up there. I think I'm paying fifty bucks
forty bucks here for for for.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
What I have.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
But I mean again, the channels you get like forty
five plus channels of major cable networks, but then you
know there's seven hundred other channels obviously that you keep
scrolling down, you know, every everything you know to the
bob Ross channel you want.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
Yeah, you can get with it.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
Yeah, you get what you want and you don't miss
what you don't get.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
And that's what I found.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
But then also if you're paying forty to fifty bucks
a month for that, which is your basically your cable replacement,
and then you're doing the bundle like maybe you're doing
the thirty dollars bundle for Disney and Hulu and Max,
which is that that's that new bundle that they're doing.
Then you're throwing in ESPN on top of that. Now
you're back up to one hundred bucks or more, which

(08:30):
is what.

Speaker 2 (08:30):
The whole thing.

Speaker 3 (08:31):
Cutting the cord was supposed to be cheaper than the cable.
So you know, a lot of it is different. But
these fights are going to become more and more prevalent,
and you know, again no mistake that they're doing this
just as the college football season was starting right as
the US Open is getting into like the meat of it,

(08:51):
and just as the NFL season is about to start
as well.

Speaker 2 (08:54):
Yeah, you know Jason with Direct TV.

Speaker 1 (08:56):
I literally called him over the weekend, But it was
almost kind of an accident with regard to this. I
got back late Saturday from Vegas, and certainly this is
the big reason that it took me so long to
get somebody a customer service on the phone when I
finally called and got through. But they I was in
a promotional pricing from last year. I called and basically

(09:22):
started threatening them. I was going to go to YouTube
TV and I said, you know, and look, I said, look,
I know you guys are hemorrhaging people. Millions of people
have tuned out since twenty twenty twenty twenty one. Said,
you guys are starting to lose people like by the droves.
And I said, I do this for a living. I
researched this kind of stuff, so I know for fact
you got And I said, you know, you guys need

(09:44):
to step up here, and so they basically they acquiesced.

Speaker 4 (09:48):
Man.

Speaker 2 (09:48):
They said, we'll do that. We'll give you a.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
Twenty dollars a month a month credit for you know
while this is going on with Disney and so as
a result, you know, I'm all the way down to
it was two fourteen was my last bill for Direct TV,
and it's it's all the way down to next month
will be sixty eight dollars. It's what pay well. And

(10:11):
so I busted their chops and it worked. I couldn't
believe it. I was kind of bluffing because Bally Sports
locally here plays the Reds and the Blue Jackets, the
Columbus Blue Jackets hockey, and they you can't get them
with like YouTube or you know, any of the other
So as a result, I was almost kind of going
And DirecTV has ballet sports, It's included in their sports package.

(10:31):
So I'm it's win win for me right now. But
you know, it also go away in twelve months.

Speaker 4 (10:37):
I mean, does this The longer this drags out, and
then the more they hear from you know, restaurant associate,
bar associations and.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
Like they don't care about it, Like they're not gonna It's.

Speaker 4 (10:48):
Like how many people are just gonna eat it and say, okay,
you know what, just I'll pay it. I'll pay a
little bit extra if that's what Direct TV wants, but
I desperately got to have this. I guess if you're
demand is that high and people are willing to pay it,
because it's just frustrating when so many public venues depend
on that particular service.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
It really is.

Speaker 3 (11:10):
But the one of the things that the at least
that's on the side of the consumer when these things
do happen. There used to be no choice, right when
they've blocked out channels. They've blocked out channels, and that
was it. But now if the Disney stuff is blocked out,
and again my parent company, I'm not advertising for them
that you can just get everything you want on Disney Plus.

Speaker 2 (11:29):
Yeah, right, you can get it.

Speaker 3 (11:31):
You can get so you do have that option, and
that puts less pressure on Direct TV to make that
deal because people are like, well, you know, it sucks
that it's not on there, but I can still get it.
So I'm not gonna call them. But you know, nobody
really wants this to drag on for too long. But again,
remember try our spectrum last year that was two weeks.

(11:51):
So if this keeps going for another two weeks, you're
gonna miss Monday night football, You're gonna miss a lot
of your college games and a bunch of other.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Stuff as well well.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
And it also you pointed out to Jason, the direct
TV CEO was saying they're going to fight as long.

Speaker 2 (12:05):
As they need to. It's like, oh boy, you don't
want to hear.

Speaker 3 (12:08):
That, but yeah, they were not he was not soft
in his language. And you're also gonna miss if this
drags on the new Wheel of Fortune without with Ryan
Seacrest's host, which I know that's going to get a
lot of people calling angrily, right, all those Wheel of
Fortune fans out there, maybe you.

Speaker 1 (12:27):
Could, well, no, you absolutely could. But what's interesting here locally?
Wheel of Fortunes on CBS, isn't it?

Speaker 5 (12:34):
Oh okay, Josh, Wheel of Fortunes on CBS here locally, Yeah,
so that's for us, Jason, Yeah, in Jeopardy too, that's
it's a CBS productier so.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
Much of that much of the country it's ABC, but
I know it's different in different places because it's syndicated.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
So yeah, very interesting. Interesting.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
