(00:22):
Welcome to Carolina Conference Call, apublic affairs program produced by iHeartRadio Greenville.
I'm Bill Allison. We're about totell you about David's Table. Now,
how I met Skeeter of David's Tableis a story maybe for another time,
but talk about how God works inmysterious ways. It's just a real blessing
that I did have a chance tomeet you and Welcome to Carolina Conference Call.

(00:45):
Well, thank you. We're justexcited about being here. It's just
a great day. We have aneat view from near the top of this
building of I've got your business card, David's table where everyone has a seat.
Yes, I love that. Well, it started a long, long
time ago. Twenty three years ago. I was at a Young Life meeting

(01:06):
and Ben Brewer showed up. Benhas cerebral pausy, rides in a power
chair. His mom was looking fora place of inclusion and was desperate enough
to come to Young Life. Onenight. You notice that you were involved
with Young Life. Absolutely, anglub, we sing, we play, and
we talk about Jesus. Well playingthat night was everybody was gonna or two

(01:32):
people from each school. We're gonnacome up and identify as many of their
friends as they could in forty fiveseconds. Oops, but wait a minute,
let's put a paper grocery bag onyour head. Three hundred and fifty
grocery bags, fifty of them hadflour in them. So fifty friends were
going to get a surprise, andBen got one of those. We were
mortified. We went to help himget cleaned up, and we were nice.

(01:57):
We invited him back. He said, please come again, but he
didn't come for three weeks. Ilooked for it. He was at the
school where I was a volunteer withYoung Life, finally founding he was sitting
with all the other students who werein wheelchairs. Started a conversation, started
my education with young folks with disabilities. He had loved it, but for

(02:23):
him to get there meant getting home, getting cleaned up from lunch that day.
Probably, can somebody bring me toYoung Life? Is there going to
be a step that I have tonegotiate? Is there a bathroom I can
use? We had never considered thosethings. So we had one Young Life
for being and his friends at hishouse, being at that time living in

(02:46):
a three story house with an elevator. Seven of his friends were there,
so we had eight young people withdisabilities. Okay, we sing, we
play, and we talked about Jesus. Well, Jeff Hopkins is non verbal.
Why would I think he would sing? One little get Gal sang beautifully.

(03:07):
The rest of those folks at thatpoint in my life screeched. It
was the worst young life thing I'veever been involved with because I had to
play guitar and I had to leadsinging, and that contributed to the misery
of everybody there. But we hadfun that even with silly string and Jesus
got lifted up. But we neverquit. Now fast forward, it's two

(03:28):
thousand and eight and I'm working fora construction company of Business Development. Very
nice construction company, but they downsizedand I got caught in that. I'm
like sixty five at that point, and I've got to decide whether I want
to see if there's another company thatwould have me, or would I do
my passion. And that was thecreation of David's Table. The name comes

(03:53):
from Second Samuel nine. The maincharacters from a fibis Chef and David.
The short story is that m philisChef comes to see David, who has
just become king. The norm wouldbe for family members to be eliminated.
Ma Phibili Chef is crippled in bothfeet. He comes in saying to David,

(04:17):
what do you have to do witha dog like me? He leaves
with all of Saul's assets, landedanimals, thirty six men to take care
of him and his assets. Ithink that really means that a whole bunch
of women we're going to do thework. But he also had an invitation
to take all these meals at David'stable. We are inviting our friends with

(04:43):
disabilities to the King's table. Flashforward another little bit and it's three years
ago and a friend comes up andsays, you know, David's table is
really pretty good, but Skeeter's old, and I got a lump of money
for you, and you got todo three things to get it. You
got to match the money and allthat money goes to a new executive director.

(05:04):
You got to come up with astrategic plan and a succession plan.
The match was done. The strategicplan we went from shooting a blunderbust at
anybody with a disability to a focuson adults with disabilities and their families.
What we have. It took awhile for us to discover it, but

(05:27):
it's so obvious once you do.Once our friends get out of high school,
an awful lot of life goes away. And what moms and dad.
They've the extra burden of no schoolto go to. So a lot of
our friends just sit. So asa part of the strategic plan, we
have created a lot of different opportunities. The main thing is what we call

(05:53):
E two ten. It's Effesians twoten. We are God's masterpiece and we're
made for a purpose. We meeton Monday nights. We grew to a
point where we had over one hundredpeople come into one location. My goodness,
we eat, then we sing thatwe play, and then we talk
about Jesus. Well, we havedivided. Talking to Skeeter Powell, storyteller

(06:15):
in chief David's table, you havea way with words, sir. You
do tell us some of the things, the events, the things that you
do with these young young adults toget them into the community. Some of
the different events that you may doduring the course of a month or so.
Okay, well, let's take atypical week. Okay, during the

(06:39):
season, every Monday morning we're gardening. We have a retired frownman who loves
the garden and he is wonderful. We got almost an acre that we're gardening
there. Monday night we have twoten that's our Bible study, that's our
main meeting. On Tesday we playedtennis at Cleveland Park at eleven o'clock and

(07:01):
then we go to the mall forlunch. It's just a it's a part
of building relationships. Focus back toa relationship with Jesus and growing with him.
On Thursdays, well, we hadwe had a fellow come and say,
do you think your friends would liketo learn to play ukulate. Well,

(07:23):
the answer to that question, orany what question like that, is
I don't know, but I thinkwe should try. Well that's four years
and forty ukulates later, and wehave what we call fred not Yukers.
We started out learning learning, kirkCords realized that that was a waste because
I mean, my hand doesn't worktoo good. Yeah, some of our

(07:45):
friends have trouble holding on ukul.So we strung and we sing. We
might sing about meat balls, wemight sing about Jesus. We're gonna end
up singing about Jesus and then wego across the hall. All of this
is happening at Trinity Fellowship and Career. Uh. These two meetings. Uh.
And then at three o'clock we haveart that's all capital letters and two

(08:09):
exclamation points. A high school studentfour years ago said, do you think
your friends would like art? Andthe answer was, I don't know,
but I think we should try.Give it a try. And we have
done watercolors, acrilics, we've doneart with wood, we've done coffee cups,
we've done Christmas ornaments, all sortsof possibilities, and it has just

(08:33):
been wonderful to watch what happens whenthey have an opportunity to to to create
is amazing. The age range againfor those who are who you serve through
David's table. Again, is anybodyout of high school? Out of high
school now in the state of SouthCarolina, the year year twenty one is

(08:56):
your last year. Yeah, somedecide to step out earlier than that,
but there is no upper nam.We have folks in their fifties, and
you're absolutely right. That comes ata critical time in a person's life,
no matter who they are, butespecially if you're facing a challenge like that.
Well, our friends are not goingoff to college for the most Yeah,
they're not going off to the military. Most of them are not.

(09:18):
Bless you. That is great andlife can be I'm follow you guys on
social media. You do a reallygood job. Guys. You need to
do this. Follow David's table onFacebook because you really give a look in
pictures and video the kind of workthat goes on with this organization. Tell
me about Camp David. Oh mygoodness. Four years ago, we decided

(09:41):
to have a virtual weekend Camp.Yeah. We paraded by Rocky Creek and
they picked up the materials that theyneeded for four meetings in a hoe down
through Grace Church. We were ableto provide two hundred gift bags for men
and women in prison, and wehad our meetings on online. Yeah.

(10:03):
Forty seven friends showed up for thatonline and it was it was an emotional
experience when we showed up Sunday atGrace Church with two hundred gift bags,
all done perfectly. It was amazing. Well. Through the years, we
have had three in person weekends. The first one we had about one hundred

(10:24):
and ninety friends and family and workcrew the supporting cast. Last year we
had a little over three hundred showat the weekend and this past year.
A couple of weekends ago, wehad over four hundred of our friends,
their families and a supporting cast ofwork crew and servers, buddies, people

(10:48):
to love on families while they werethere. It is an amazing weekend.
This is a remarkable organization. David'sTable is I did not know you existed
until about four or five days ago, and I think it was God that
brought you and me together without adoubt. And the more I know about
you and this organization and the peoplethat are part of it, the more

(11:11):
blessed we are to have somebody likeDavid's Table in our community. How can
people, first of all, guysagain urge you go to their Facebook page
and see the great work that theydo with God here. Now, how
can folks put their efforts behind yourefforts? How can we help support what
you guys do. We have awebsite right it is David's Table online dot

(11:33):
org. David's Table Online is oneword dot org and there you can get
a lot of information. There willbe tabs there where if you want to
be generous, you can be.But there's also a tab there that says,
if you'd like to be involved, you can get more information and become

(11:54):
involved. What we find a lotof times is people come and they're a
little wary about being around folks withdisabilities. But what they find is our
friends draw people in, and youput our friends with the Holy Spirit,
and it's just hard to refuse andinvolvement. It is an amazing ministry to

(12:20):
watch volunteers, many of whom haveno experience with folks with disabilities, many
of whom are moms and dads ofspecial adults. We would love to have
folks to visit the website, giveus a little bit of information about you

(12:41):
and how you might want to beinvolved by pressing that button. Look at
the donation page. Any any donationsthat come in in the next little bit
will be addressed to the next partof our conversation. Absolutely, and we're
going to talk to Jack Price,he's a Woodmont High and talk about favor
of God. How you and Imet just a few days ago, and

(13:05):
it just so happens that we're comingupon Spirit Week with Woodmont High and they've
chosen to support David's table with WoodmontHigh Spirit Week. Hang on, guys,
up next, we're going to chatwith Jack Price from Woodmont High find
out what they're doing and how youcan further help what's going on with their
project. So I serve at Woodmontas the student body president, which means

(13:26):
that I can kind of work togetherwith the other representatives from SGA to plan
different themes, daring school events, and after school events all through Spirit Week.
So we kind of we work asa team. But that's kind of
my role. So how did youbecome involved with David's Table as your charity

(13:48):
for Woodmont High Spirit Week? Soevery year before the school year, our
advisor, Missy Smiths, will senda application out to any local charity that
wants to apply to be our partnerfor spare a Week. This year,
we had close to thirty charities applyand we did a interview process and we

(14:13):
ended up with David's Table. Whatimpressed you about David's Table. I really
was impressed by their willingness to bevulnerable about their situation about how they helped
the community, what they did,and just they were very open about it,
excuse me, and they were justthey love Jesus and that's a big

(14:37):
part of of what we are apart of. So we just we really
like how generous they are with theirtime and how open they are about sharing
what they believe in. Okay, now, you have a very important job
here because thousands of people are listeningto what we're talking about right now.
With your supporting of David's table withWoodmond Spirit Week, let folks know the

(15:03):
different ways that they can contribute toyour efforts. Yes, sir, so,
the biggest one is the link todonate on Woodmont High School's website.
There's a big old button that saysdonate now for Woodmot Spirit Week. That's
the that's the biggest way to donate. Just straight to the thing. It'll

(15:24):
go straight to our check at theend of the week. We have a
couple of their events. There isa silent auction dinner at Neely Farm Clubhouse
on Sunday. Information on masks canbe found on social media or on the
Woodmont website. Other than that, just participating in different just come into different

(15:46):
events, seeing what's going on.But the big the big two things are
a sign auction dinner and the donatenow button on Woodmont High School's website.
Who are you guys playing on FridayNight? This Friday night, we kick
off again Seneca High School at Seneca. But our check review will be at
Woodmont High School against jail Man,Oh, against man my kids. My

(16:07):
kids went to man Oh. Iactually helped coach their football team years ago.
I wasn't that good. I wasn'tthat good. Right, Well,
I've been to your school. Infact, my niece plays volleyball for another
high school. I was at WoodmontHigh's gym last week in fact, for
the you got a very good women'svolleyball team. I'll tell you that much.

(16:29):
What do you know? Well, thank you, sir, I appreciate
that. Let me let me askyou a couple of things. First of
all, does Woodmont High have alike Facebook page? Yes, sir so.
Do you have that information about donatingto Spirit Week on that Facebook page?
Yes, sir so. We havetwo different, two different social media
accounts. We are Woodmot HS orwe are Woodmot that'll be that'll have information

(16:56):
regarding Spirit Week. Okay, guys, as you're listening right now, if
you would go to your Facebook page, and you're probably on Facebook right go
to we are Woodmont. Just doit in the search there it is,
pull it up, give it alike, follow them, read all about what
they're doing with Spirit week and makea donation. That's how you can help
David's Table do the amazing work theydo through this Spirit Week effort. Jack,

(17:17):
we appreciate you first of all forchoosing David's table. Thanks for being
on Carolina conference call. We appreciateit absolutely. Thank you, Bill,
have a great day, and thanksagain to Woodmont High for lifting up David's
table during your Spirit Week. Whata great thing. Let's continue our chat

(17:40):
here with the Skeeter Poll. Tellus more about David's Table, some other
things that may come to mind here. Okay, we've talked about creating community
some of the activities that we have, but one is we want to connect
to resources. We are not church, we are not the church, but
we want our friends and their familiesto be in church. We have instituted

(18:03):
a little thing that we call firstSunday. It is not the first Sunday
in the month. It's the firstSunday that one of our families goes to
church. A lot of our familieshad not had good experiences. People stare
at a child in a power chair. People are awkward, and we understand

(18:23):
that is not appropriate. But weunderstand. So First Sunday, if one
of our families says, we wantto go to church. Well, what
kind of church do you want togo to? You want one that's liturgical
or do you want one that's freeand easy. Well we'll set them up
with several opportunities. They pick, and that's Sunday that they go. Someone

(18:48):
has committed to greet them at thecar door and walk them into the church,
introducing them to folks along the way. Yeah. I got to take
raining to Beat Springs Church. Theperson who was supposed to meet us was
their special ministries person. She hadan emergency. So I was thinking,
oh, well, half the churchcame out to greet us that it was

(19:11):
wonderful. Oh man, what agreat to the past rame buy as we
were sitting there and uh, justa little bit, a little bit of
conversations. Is I hope you likeloud? And it was. It was.
And they brought the word that daytoo. But transportation, uh is

(19:33):
always an issue. I've got tocall a fella back in just a minute,
uh and let him know how we'regoing to get to Woodmont tomorrow.
I have to go pick him up. That's one of the neat things about
this spirit. What will come ofit? Is a new transit van equipped
with a lift that can transport ourfriends. If they raise enough money.
It might be too h We're wewant to be a resource to our families.

(20:00):
What typically happens is one mother foundsomething and shares it with another mother
who didn't know about it. Wehave lots of information because we've got lots
of mothers that are involved with us, and we want to point them in
the in the right right direction. What we have found is, with what

(20:23):
feels like a great big family, that different ones of us are going to
have our turn in the barrel. And it's not fun to be in the
barrel now. And my next stopis to go to the hospital where I've
got one of our mom met Joshwhen he was a freshman in high school.
He's a he's thirty three now.Later today he's going to lose a

(20:45):
leg to infection and we'll be thereand support him. And as we have
bial trains that that are helping folksout who are in disrest, it works
because we all know that eventually we'regoing to have our turning them in the
barrel. Yeah, and we knowfrom experience now that folks are gonna be

(21:10):
there to help and course well, creating committee, creating community, connecting to
resources, and making disciples. Thoseare the three things that we want to
focus on with adults with disabilities andtheir families. And I'm not sure who's
blessed more, the families and theadults. For us, it is an

(21:34):
amazing thing to be there and beloved back and to be loving the Skeeter
Powell of David's Table has been ourguests this morning on Caroline conference call.
If you take it back to twothousand and eight, when you get that
seminal moment in your personal life, when listen, there was a lot of

(21:55):
downsizing happening. We saw it inour company here and you saw in your
company, and you made that decisiondo I go this path or that path.
It's almost like that two roads divergedin the wood, and I took
the one less traveled by. Youwent with your heart, You went with
God is in your heart, andyou chose to go in the direction you
went. And it has been aremarkable journey for you, hasn't. Oh

(22:18):
my goodness. And my wife wasa computer programmer for years making good money.
She got called to her ministry, which is called the Anchorage Ministry of
Spiritual Direction and Retreats. We losther income, but it didn't feel like
it. Well, flash forward andI'm making a pretty good living working with
a company based out of Detroit doinga billion dollars of construction every year.

(22:42):
So I'm doing okay, And allof a sudden, I'm not financially Yeah,
I'm doing exactly what God would haveme do. And we have not
hurt financially as a family. Itis I don't know what God, God's
just taking cows and selling them,I get, But the what what has

(23:04):
happened? Uh? And we mightwe might not be taken friends, we
might not be doing some things thatwe would otherwise. Well, now we
wouldn't do that. You're leading apurposeful life, and you're doing it with
God, and you're doing it forsuch an amazing group of young men and
women who are at a certain agewhere you know, like you said that

(23:25):
you finished high school and where othersmove on and life, life for them
will stand still if not for someoneto walk in and say hello in there
and just a group of folks workwith us. Who are those people who
were standing in the gap. It'sit's wow, what are you doing on
Monday night. I just might haveto check it out. You're not.

(23:47):
I'll tell you, folks one day. This story. We got no time
for it about how you and Imet, but we met in the most
unusual way. But it has ledto to us having this conversation into us
urging you to please go to David'sdash table dot org, or just make
it easier for you, go toDavid's table on Facebook. Well, David's
table online dot org. Oh,David's table online dot org. I'm gonna

(24:10):
get that right. Go to David'sTable online dot org. Or look them
up on David's table on Facebook.I've followed them and they show you everything
that they do, and certainly witha big spirit week on the way with
Woodmond High. You can go toWoodmont High's Facebook page and support this effort.
Guys, I'm telling you firsthand,I can see the joy in this
man's face for the good work thatthey are all doing and for the people

(24:30):
they're doing it for. They needyour support. This organization needs all the
support you can give it, andI hope you do. Skeeter, It's
been a pleasure for you, ohmine, It's been my pleasure College.
Okay, we'll look forward to notmeeting the same way again now maybe not,
maybe not, but you will bea guest in the future and you
will come back and see us downthe road. But our guests have been

(24:52):
Skeeter Powell of David's table, andagain thanks for being on Caroline Conference.
