All our work. Let's go college football today. We are

(00:48):
two and a half hours away from the start of
the New Mexico Bowl. Nott dot far away to any
ul apaet as well in Orlando kick it off first,
but we'll turn our tech to the New Mexico Bowl.
We spoke about it briefly with Jamie North Texas and
Seth Latrelle. They have a solid quarterback in Mason Fine

(01:08):
going up against the twenty feet rank Utah State Aggies
minus their head coach, Matt Wells that has become the
new head coaching in Lubbick, taking over for Cliff Kingsbury
in Texas Tech solid quarterback play here you have Mason
Fine Rich that has thrown for twenty eight touchdown passes,
completed sixty percent of his passes over thirty seven hundred

(01:30):
passing yards, and then on the flip side, Jordan's Love
that has completed sixty percent of his passes twenty seven touchdowns,
and more importantly, has one of the best offensive lines
in the country, only yielding nine total sacks heading into
this ball game, I think it'll be a shootout, but
I'm still taking the points with North Texas in this
match up. I think it makes sense and this is

(01:51):
a really vastly underrated quarterback matchup. Jordan's Love For fans
of the NFL, You're gonna see him on Sundays in
the next couple of years. Just the sophomores got a
couple of years of eligibility left. Whether he uses them
remains to be seen. Mason fine, kind of built like
Mackenzie Milton is under six feet tall. Probably not gonna

(02:11):
see him in the NFL, but he's the kind of
kid he's He's the quintessential, high powered, prolific college quarterback
running Latrelle's offense. Rico Bussy All Conference USA Wide receiver.
I like that you brought up the offensive line of
Utah State. Those nine sacks exactly where I was gonna go.
This is a very talented football team offensively, defensively, they

(02:32):
have their linebacker David Woodward, Mountain West Defensive Player of
the Year, so they can get it done on both
sides of the ball. But I like the continuity of
that coaching staff of North Texas. I mean, Latrelle is back.
We talked about it with Jamie Heath in the second
second segment. You know, Latrelle had an opportunity to go
elsewhere and he's staying in Denton. I think those kids

(02:53):
repay him today, not only with a cover with the
but with the possibility of actually winning this, uh this
ball game. Yeah, we'll see in Gabe. If you like
the over today, you gotta you gotta have teams that
forced turnovers and entering this battle Utah State plus eleven
and turnover margin North Texas at plus eight, so that
oh factor into this ball game as well. Whichever team

(03:14):
wins the turnover battle should be able to win this ballgame.
And the heads of these kids, who cares? Who does it?
What staff is interested? Who isn't? We know? The me
and Green are coming to play today. And when I
when I got these games and you're talking about earlier, Joe,
what I like about the excipment of the ball game?

(03:35):
And it's a little stale to me in the sense
that I liked it before when there wasn't the conference affiliations. Yeah,
we know, like January one is boring. Oh God, Like
Michigan's playing Florida again, you know what I mean? Like
this air or number two sec versus number two, big tent,
number three, there's number four this versus that. But I'm
always fascinated by watching the different conferences play against each other.

(03:59):
And then I say, okay, what about the athletes. Do
these kids match up with these guys? Do they you know,
how do they match up? How many blue chips? What
do we have here? And listen, Utah State, we're a
great football team this year. But I think they were
a great team because they were a great coach team. Like,
if we look at athletes and we want to get
into a combine situation here, I think, would you guys

(04:21):
agree North Texas kids match up very well, if not better?
I mean, are the kids on Utah stayed faster than
North Texas kids? Know? Are they stronger? I don't know.
Maybe in the trenches they're a little tougher, a little bigger,
But overall, I'm getting seven and a half points with
to me, and look, I put my money where my
mouth is. I might put a little more on it,

(04:41):
but here we gotta take it right here. The fan
Duel sports book HUDs already put I bet this earlier
in the week on North Texas. So we'll play a
little more online right now. But I always capt these
games because you know, you know, we know about the
bigger conferences. We've seen these kids, so we can sort
of cop those games easier. These are interesting. It's like

(05:03):
guys from different neighborhoods playing each other. And I always
copy these games. How do they match up athletically? And
I think North Texas match up damn the damn well
with these guys well and and and what really goes
forgot about North Texas is we focus a lot on
the offense because the you know, the the name guys
are Mason Fine and Seth Latrelle. But North Texas defensively

(05:24):
has dramatically improved in two thousand and eighteen. It's a
much better defense. Very talented at the linebacker. E J.
A Jaya and Brandon Garner. So defensively, let's not overlook
North Texas and in their three losses guys this year
only by a combined thirteen points, so nine and three
team three losses by thirteen points. We've got a neutral field,
we've got a motivated team getting points. I think North

(05:48):
Texas is a good bet today. And to your point,
you talk about the front seven, they're only given up
a hundred and thirteen rushing yards per game. And when
you look at this matchup as well, I think it's
a contrast in styles. You see Utah State both of
their losses too. You can state week number one by
seven points in East Lansing and two Boise State in
the middle part of the season. They're more of a
blue collar team. They're physical of the offensive defensive lines,

(06:09):
and you have more, I want to say, of a
speed type of offense and defense in North Texas. They
can run sideline to sideline, but between the trenches is
where I have some concerns. But that being said, third
down defense for North Texas thirty eight percent, and that's
gonna matter in this matchup. Whichever team could dictate the
tempo from a defensive perspective, and let's not keep this

(06:30):
uh in the background. North Texas got blown out against
Troy last year in the in the New Orleans Bowl.
They understand that they're gonna come motivated and more importantly,
especially in the beginning part of this ballgame, look to
start fast and I would think that that favors North
Texas and secondly, always always favors the over because you
have both secondaries given up around two forty passing lunch

(06:54):
for game. Another excellent point about the secondary of Utah
State because to forty is the aggregate number for the season,
but if you break that down, they were worse at
the end of the year. This this was the secondary
that struggled late in the season. When you would think
maybe with better changing in Mountain West Territory that passing
numbers would go down, they went up against Utah State.

(07:14):
So now again, Mason Fine, get to know, Mason Fine.
This is what I I'll knock the bulls where they
deserve it. I'm not going to pull punches. But what
I love about the bulls is days like today because
average fans, college fans, even people who say I'm a
huge college fan, they've never seen Mason fine, Now you
get to watch a Mason Fine in action. I think

(07:36):
that's five interceptions. You're right, I think that's entertaining game.
I think to be able to watch a young player
like that this afternoon, I think is really fantastic. How
do you feel the wretch? Is it? The NFL going
had to add with the ball games? I know they
can't bend over and say, okay, we're not We're not

(07:57):
you know what I mean, We're not gonna just like
college football. We have to go about our business. I
get it, but I don't know, man, it almost seems
like the big bully type thing the NFL. Yeah, yeah,
screw your bowl game. We're putting the Houston Texas on
you mean on a Saturday, as far as the matchup goes. Yeah, no,
I'm just talking about you know, listen, there's usually Saturday
NFL at this time or the year. But I just

(08:18):
think it's a shame because we're all listen, I'll cut
to the chase. We're all really excited about these bowl games.
But more you know, once the NFL game starts, people
are gonna watch the Shaw Watson in the Houston Texas.
So I think some of these kids and what's the
game is gonna be going head to head there. I mean,
we're gonna have the end of the Lafayett game, We're
gonna have the Utah State North Texas game. A lot
of people are gonna see the heroics or the excitement

(08:40):
of the Mason Fine, just because the NFL is that
big man, people will doing into the Texas Jets game.
They can add another leg to their Parlady though, gave
if they pick one of our best bets for the
today And what everyone's a degenerate like p Joe, Well,
we we want to grow the degenerate fan base though.
I mean we're trying to growing, you know, especially in

(09:01):
the area. All up, Well, the next game at at
one thirty, the first kick of the day is two
Lane and U. L Lafayette. I really like this Twane
team coach by Willie Fitz six and six overall. You
have UL Lafayette sitting there at nine and four overall,
but a contrast in styles. You have a Green Wave
team that's averaging two journe eight rushing yards for a game,

(09:24):
passing for one eight six through the air, and does
have solid quarterback playing Jonathan Banks and Justin McMillan. Both
of those guys are mobile quarterbacks, only completing around fifty
of their passes, but this is still a two lane defense.
Statistically rich they're giving up one fifty six on the
ground two sixty five through the air. But they're coached
by former Tennessee volunteer J. J. McCleskey number one and

(09:47):
set uh n C double a record at the early
part of the year nineteen pass breakups, thirty three third
down defense, and thirty three total sacks. They're going up
against the ul Lafayette defense giving up two rushing guards
per game. My best better the day. I think Tulane
roles in this matchup fourteen points more. Yeah, I like

(10:09):
Tulane as well. And and what really interests me about
this game is there's a history between these schools. You know,
when we get to the postseason, if you have an
opportunity to set up a matchup that has kind of
a subplot, that's even more fun. And and again I
don't expect casual fans to know the fact that Tulane
and Uel Lafayette have played twenties six times, but they

(10:31):
have played twenty six times. These programs have known each
other in the past in State, I'll call them rivals.
I don't know if they're actually rivals, but this is
going to matter to both of these teams and both
of these staffs. Willie Fritz has done a nice job
at Tulane. Billy Napier, young coach for the Raging Cajuns,
also has done a good job. I think he could
be promoted. Watch the backs in this game, both teams

(10:52):
will try to establish the run. To Joe's point, Lafayette
has struggled to stop the run. They especially struggle against
mobile quarterbacks, which is exactly what Tulane has gave in
l s U transferred Justin McMillan. You know what, guys,
I I agree. I love what you guys are talking about.
And you're both very smart men. I'm going to try
and I'm gonna talk from a gambling perspective here, and

(11:15):
I'm just gonna look right now the history. How many
times these look at you A B. Last year U
A B comes back? Oh my god, what a great story.
They go to a ball game, they got massacred in
the ball game. I'm falling. I think people are buying
into this. Willie Fretz hyped too much. Tulane were one
of the trendiest teams coming into there. When Joe was

(11:37):
cruising Las Vegas. Rich you should have been there. I
missed it. Yeah. We were talking about, like, you know,
college football totals. And last year I was legendary because
I said, f a U goes over to four and
a half and they want to leven Gang for the record.
This year, I told people take pit over. Five and
a half. Bowl went over. But I also everyone was
on Tulane. You know, Tulane this this year. To Lane, Matt,

(12:00):
you know the hipsters, guys like you, You and Joe.
You knew about ju Lane coming into the year. They
were supposed to make a ball game this year. You know.
But from the outside, it's like Willie Fritz, what a
great story. To Lane, It's a great story. You mentioned
Bill Napier. To me, I think to Lane, just sort
of happy to be here. I think Willie Fritz gets
a Bowl in two or three years from now, but

(12:22):
not today. I think to get some laugh, I had
show up and win this game out right. It should
be an intriguing battle. Here's where we spoke to Jamie.
He likes the younger in this matchup. Here's why I
like the over though gave you. They're giving up two
hundred Russian yards for a game. They're given up around
two hundred and thirty passing yards to opposing offenses in
Ulafayettes defense. But they're allowing teams to convert fort of

(12:45):
the time on third downs and are negative three in
turnover margin heading into this ball game. And when I
look at the quarterback nowonez nineteen touchdowns, twelve interceptions. This
game is gonna be played on turf, so I don't
think whether it will be that much of a factor.
But if it does rain that fact that favors two lane,
I think they run at will. And that's why I
like the over year. Not only do I like tu lane,

(13:07):
I think they can put up a lot of points.
And when you look at their body of work, they
beat teams like Memphis, they beat teams like Navy and
South Florida. Those are quality teams within the conferences. So
that I know that when you look at U. L. Lafayette,
they played Mississippi State, played Alabama, but statistically it really
favors two lane in this ball game. You know, it's funny, Joe,

(13:29):
We're gonna we're we're on a green were almost everything
we said on today's show, no no argument. But we're
looking at this completely different. It's like an episode in
the Twilight Zone. You know what happened when when you
were on the plane and it disappeared. You know the
way historic Us is wearing red and then the other
guy distorre Us is wearing blue. I faforally remember because

(13:49):
I'm looking at this game and I'm thinking Tulane won't
be able to keep up with these guys. You're talking
about the scoring Lafayette. I listens, so it's not a
whole game, and it's super this game as Louisiana, right, um,
it feels like it should be a New Orleans Bowl.
We used the Cure Bowl. By the way, I don't
even I'm not even sure what these setting it's in,
uh the states, in the world. Orlando's or Yeah, there's

(14:16):
a ESPN dig you know what I mean. That's not stadium.
It's like it's basically the backyard and of the headquarters
for them towards Orlando. But for me, I'm looking at Lafayette.
We're talking about a football team, and guys, I was
gonna say these Bowl games, so they're not home. Sometimes
the team will be at home rarely, but you know,
generally their neutral games. So I look at a neutral game.

(14:38):
I started looking at like a road game. How are
you doing? Because a lot of these kids are sort
of built in teams are better at home. We see
this a football time. How do you play on the road.
That's why I'm looking at a team. Right, you're going
on the road, neutral field, whatever, it's a road game,
it's neutral. It's a road game. You're staying in a hotel,
you're on the road. It's a road game. And I'm
looking at Lafayette. These guys dropped forty five points a

(15:00):
game on the road, thirty one. They're giving up thirty one.
I agree. I think there's gonna be points in there.
I think the total might be a little long. Glad
you brought it up. Actually, Joe, I looked at this.
I'll tell you what. It's totally correlated. Here. Do you
like Lafayette the game goes over? You like Toulne It
goes under two, ages, three and nine. Uh you know
to to the younger nine nine nine unders three overs?

(15:22):
Only Conversely, you look at you look at Lafayette seven
games have gone over. The number six have gone under.
You know, Lafayette are comfortable playing a high scoring game here, guys,
I think, laugh Faye had, I'll score them. And I
think to Lane get a little overwhelmed in their first
ball appearance. Yeah, we'll see. I mean he brought up
you ab last year and they were overwhelmed by Ohio
and that matchup. So I think I've been monitoring Two

(15:45):
Lane social media all week, and you're right, they're hopped
up there wearing the all white uniforms for this ball game.
Your hard though, I like your style. You've been watching
Twitter and mothering these guys. I like, well, I think
it's important to gage each whether teams are into and
I think that that's when you break down some of
these smaller tier balls. I want to see which team
is motivated heading into this ball game. And Two Lane,

(16:08):
from what I've read and everything that they're putting out,
I mean from the cheerleading squad, they are they're amped
up to be here today. And I think when you
look at Willie Fritz as well, the way he's culminated
this offense in terms of ground and pound, they kept
an offense in Memphis with a high scoring offense with
Darryl Henderson. They kept him at Bay and now granted

(16:28):
it was at home, but I think that's the same
type of game tonight. We're not telling I'm surprised or
you're not trouble. What about Louis? What about Lafayette? These
guys put up toward the nineteen yards a game on
the ground. Oh yeah, no, do good backs to the football?
They on the football teams have a good one to
punch out of the backfield. One aim I want to
throw before we go to a break. I want to

(16:49):
throw out the name Patrick Johnson that that is gonna
be Lafayette's biggest concern to Lane's defensive end. We talk
a lot about the backs, a lot about the mobile quarterbacks,
but Patrick Johnson ted sack. He's somebody to watch out for.
Thirty three total shacks four tu Lane heading into this matchup.
So we'll see how that game plays out. It is
a one thirty kick. When we come back, we'll be

(17:10):
talking about the Las Vegas bowld Joelicie rich Hermonello and

(18:27):
taking place in Las Vegas. Pack twelve Mountain West matchup
Arizona State seven and five over all going up against
Fresno State at eleven in Dune. Herm Edwards and the
crew have done a fantastic job playing every game tough day.
Knocked off Michigan State earlier in the year, also knocked
off USC on the road in the coliseum after they

(18:48):
fell behind early in the fourth quarter. Came from behind
Manny Wilkins will play in this ballgame. No nikkil Harry,
and that could be a concern for Arizona Statement. When
you look at Manny Wilkins overall rich nineteen touchdown passes,
only six interceptions Eno Benjamin in that offense, he's utilized
in the short thing to media passing game. They're going

(19:10):
up though, against a rock solid secondary in Fresno State,
giving up a hundred ninety passing large per game. But
I still like the speed of Arizona State. I think
they picked up the victory today. It's a compelling matchup
because you I like games between Pack twelve and Mountain
West because you know, the Mountain West team always feels
like a little brother. We have something to prove. You know. Fresno,

(19:32):
like any team in the Mountain West, would love to
be an additional member of the Pac twelve. Arizona State.
I think they'll be fully motivated. I think herm will
have these kids ready. All Arizona State does is play
competitive football games. I see no reason why this won't
be any different. The line as it gets high or
scares me, I do like Fresno State to win. When
we initially did our picks it was four and a half,

(19:53):
so I'm like, all right, I think Fresno is gonna win.
Can I take a s U get in the four
and a half to cover and Fresno win? As it
gets higher, I get nervous, But listen, I like the
Fresno State defense, Jeff Allison in the middle of linebacker.
Juju use you mentioned the secondary is outstanding? Uh, nikkil
Harry is a big loss. I mean, there's no way
around it. And then we talked about in the break

(20:14):
Merlin Robertson, your true freshman linebacker as the season went on,
arguably became their best defensive players. So, uh, interesting matchup.
One more thing to keep in mind to a s
U last seven games against Mountain West opponents one and
six against the SAX intriguing game. When you look at
this matchup, I expect Darby and Williams, the wide receivers,
to step up to make up for the lack of

(20:36):
production from Harry in this ballgame, and I expect Benjamin
to be a factor as well in the short sing
to media passing game. I just don't know about the
over because every game to me seems like an under
for Fresno State. Throughout the year. You know, Joe, you
really look at me like the total king, don't you.
It's only fifty five. It's creeping up. But I mean,

(20:59):
if you've got to do here, you better do your
under over homework before you getting fun to leasy, got
no kidding, man. Joe knows me well though. He knows
I love to beck those overs, right, he knows. So
you know, I'm not gonna buy I'm not gonna pull
up Barry Horwitz too much here. But you guys, remember
earlier in the year when I said, you know, everyone's
laughing at her Edwards. Remember that Antonio game against Michigan State.

(21:23):
I was like, you know, everyone's laughing at this guy.
And I was right there. I like her him too.
He's been on my show over the years. He's always
treated me respect. He's always you know, he's so fun.
He's like he loves football, like he's a contagious guy.
And we talked about that. When he went into the room,
You're like, how do you not hire him? This guy
could sell anything, right, Like he blew him away. Everyone's like, wow,

(21:43):
you know the A. D. S Is agent? Right? Uh Hey,
I was right there when the high I was like,
really her Edwards, I was kind of weird, strange higher
and and then I was starting to fit. But I
don't know, man, this guy's been on TV. Kids know him.
You know he could sell stuff, right, you know, herm Edwards.
He talks to you, You're like, yeah, let's put me

(22:04):
into coach, let's go. And he has that sort of
enthusiasm about him and everyone's underestimated. Asked you all year,
and I've written them and I you made great points.
From a football standpoint. Fresno State are a very good
football team, and they've been great against the spread as well.
I just want to confirm their number against the number

(22:25):
of this year, nine and four against the spread. I mean,
you know, but they were like eight no against spread
at one point. Um, it's caught up to a little bit. Uh, Fresno.
I'm going contrarian here. You guys love front. You're talking
to fresnol is Fresno that I know. Fresno. It's gonna
be fired up, Ted Fard's gonna have these guys ready
to play and they're gonna want to get a win.

(22:45):
And they've already beaten packed well teams this year. I
get it. But Arizona State has been underestimated all year. Law,
I got an NFL coach. That's what I brought up
to you guys before about you know that the match
up with Michigan State. D'Antoni know this, Antonio that I said,
I got an NFL coach that is prepared for NFL
offenses and defenses before. You're giving me three weeks with

(23:09):
HERM Edwards to prepare for this football game, and you're
giving me points and every Yahoo from Iowa to Missoula,
Montana walking up to the window in Vegas getting on
Fresno today, the numbers climbing, give me Arizona State. Yeah,
I'm with you. And to Gibbs point, I think when
you talk about the breakdown between Todd Graham from last

(23:29):
year and HERM Edwards, I mean, now, if they lose
this ball game, same exact record as Todd Graham last year,
but they've been more competitive in games this year, like
the game against the Office Show. You're right, coach Losses. Hey,
these guys lost by a touchdown or less every week
when I lost against good beats. Right, And here's what
I look at is why why I like Arizona State
in this ball game as well, I mean defensively led

(23:51):
by Danny Gonzalez twenty nine total sacks. They are only
allowing teams to convert around on third down conversions, but
they there are physical de fense. They can run sideline
to sideline and they can contain that rushing attack of
Fresno State and Rivers that's only averaging a hundred and
forty six rushing yards per game. They like to work
off a play action with mcmahray and now he's having

(24:12):
a very solid season, I mean an underrated quarterback. He's
got twenty five touchdowns, three interceptions. In Fresno State does
always win the turnover battle for the most part, plus
thirteen heading into this ball game, and we love talking
about offensive lines. This offensive line in Fresno State has
only allowed twelve sacks up until this point, and Gonzalez

(24:35):
loves to blitz as a de coordinator, so to me,
third downs will be key. But I think it's the
speed of Arizona State defensively that is a factor in
this ball It makes for a great matchup that offensive
line of Fresno State, which is underrated, versus the attacking
defensive a A s U and Danny Gonzalez. That's a
that's a really important chess match in this game. I

(24:56):
like the fact that Joe brought up turnovers plus thirteen
you mentioned. I'll let go that point for Fresno State
also one of the best red zone defenses in the
country in two thousand and eighteen during the regular season.
Now for a s U, you lose that red zone,
you know, option in to kill Harry, so someone has
to step up. Kyle Williams more of a slot receiver,
but he is a veteran. He's a senior wide receiver.

(25:18):
I would expect to see him have a big game
and then don't forget about you know, you know, Benjamin,
I mean I think, you know sort of got lost
this season. You know, we spent a lot of time
talking about Harry, because Harry is the kid who could
go first or second round in the draft. Left early.
But Benjamin, I think he's got about sixteen hundred yards
on the ground, so that comp and and Manny Wilkins.

(25:38):
You talked about him his mobile, he's mobile, but he's
also such a smart quarterback. He really knows how to
manage a game. He's very clean. Despite the fact that
Fresno is plus thirteen. You know, man, he's not gonna
turn it over and that's key for the Sundels and
Arizona States plus nine guys, so they forced turnovers as well,
and goods. I was coaching this game against Houston, not

(26:00):
that it's a huge factory. Understand he understands the Bowl
prep for this type of ball game. You're exactly right, guys.
I am getting goosebumps right right now, and we gave goosebumps.
I love you know. I'm thinking about a kid like
I'm a big Manny Wilkins fan. Man, this kid has
battled over his career. Guys, everyone talks about Will Grewer.

(26:21):
This justin Herbert dot and all these under quarterbacks no where,
every talks about Manny Wilkins in the place. And this
kid's made over the years. This kid has laid his blood,
sweat and tears out for this as you program. And
I think he goes out a winner today. Yeah, we'll see.
I mean Pat twelve hasn't stepped up in recent years,
so we see how that game. I was gonna say
that as well. One in eight last year. This is

(26:42):
the first Pet twelve game of the bull season, so
you know if you want to get to though, I
think they know that. You know that coming don't want
a big bull season. It's a big bull season for
the Pack Twalks. It really is. They need to step up.
Will turn our attention to the other intriguing battle. It's
Eastern Michigan and Georgia Southern contrasts and styles. This is
a team guys in Eastern Michigan seven and five overall,

(27:03):
but did knock off per Due in West Lafayette twenty
and nineteen. They went toe to toe with San Diego
State after a three game road lost that matchup by
three points. But this is a run heavy offense in
Georgia Southern, led by Works, their quarterback that's averaging two
sixty one rushing launch per game and leads FBS plus

(27:24):
twenty two in turnover margin. But I think Eastern Michigan
is the more physical team. I think they win this matchup.
They're catching three three and a half points. I like
Eastern Michigan in this ball game. Yeah, I'm on Georgia Southern.
I like teams that run the option this time of year.
E M you could be a little bit tired defensively.
Love their end combination, Jeremiah Harris, Max Crosby. But the

(27:46):
one thing that e m you needs work on is
stopping the run. Outstanding past defense number five in the country,
but that past defense is not gonna help you today
against Georgia's other because g s U wants to run it.
You know, Joe mentioned in shall I we're Wesley Fields.
They're gonna pound and pound and pound. Think Georgia Tech
when Paul Johnson was there. I think that physicality of

(28:08):
the offensive line and the offensive philosophy, philosophy of Georgia Southern,
I think it's too much for Eastern Michigan. And listen,
Gave Chris Crton has done a great job for e
m U. I had a ton of respect right beat
per new this year. They've had a great seasons. And
this was a program that was on financial life support
and maybe a couple of years ago, Eastern Michigan they

(28:29):
thought maybe was gonna, you know, be defunct. So Chris
Cranton has done a great job. I just think Georgia
Southern has a little too much offensively for the Eagles.
So I think when you're looking at this matchup, gave
for Eastern Michigan They did play Army and lost that
matchup by twelve points to the Cadets. Held. The Cadets
store around four yards per carry, and they are nine
and three against the number heading into this ball game.

(28:49):
And they have solid quarterback player. I mean, Glass is
more of an RPO type of guy. They bring him
in in special packages and weakerts. The former Iowa quarterback
has stepped up eighteen touch down passes. I still again,
I like the over here. Now this may sound crazy.
It opened up at eight, down to around forty seven
and a half forty seven, But I think Eastern Michigan

(29:10):
can move the football on a Georgia Southern's defense game.
You know what, The total is a little low, isn't it. Joe,
You're exactly right at six right now? This is another
one too. I've already played it, guys once a game.
Put my money where my mouth is already played. I
don't know what's going on because normally me and Richard
against Joe. But Joe, you and I agreeing too much today,
knows it's contrary into the regular season. Here. This is scary.

(29:35):
Everything is different. Yeah, Bowl games, I mean, you know
overs can be Yeah, you know totals too low. But
I'm want you Joe here and you know, and rich
I hear what you're saying here. This is a classic.
This almost like Sec versus Big Ten Jr. Right, Like

(29:57):
you know what I mean to me, I look all
right this me. You got Georgia Southern gonna run the football.
You guys raise a great point, rich you know, Richard
Rage a great point. As far as Eastern Michigan strength,
is that secondary? Yet I still have the MAC defensive
Player of the Year in mass Crosby. And to me,
I'm looking at the physicality like Joe talked about. I

(30:18):
think these kids from Michigan, man are gonna be able
to run the football. I'm looking for Ericson to run
the football here, pound the ball, smash mouth. I think
Eastern Michigan are a better football team the Georgia Southern are.
I do that game against San Diego State, Man, I
bought in and I'll tell you what. My cousin played
hockey in Eastern Michigan. So I know this program well.

(30:38):
And I'm a Michigan fan right at Wolverine fan. I've
been in the stadium out there. I don't even think
they got fifteen thousand people. Look, you stay at eligible
in the n C double A used to have like
thirty people in that stadium years ago. I remember I
thought my boy Ron English could stay in this program,
and even he couldn't do it. Coming ome from ann Arbor,
Cragon has done a hell of a job. Man, hard
to recruit here, guys. People don't realize stays. Like you said,

(31:01):
these guys will arguing the worst program in America, maybe
the worst program in America. Third straight Bowl gag. They
have experience right now, they've been there, They've done not
gimme Crosby gave me here, gave me the fatality of
the kids from the Midwest. Yeah, I mean to Gibbs point.
And when when I look at that matchup for Eastern Michigan,

(31:23):
it came after a three game road trip when they
went to West Lafayette and won and played a very
physical offensive defensive line in San Diego State. So they
showed me something there. Now they're plus tennant turnover margin,
and I guess when you break this game down from
an offensive perspective, there are a methodical offense only converting
around on third downs. They want to run the football

(31:44):
and work well for play action, but they need to
establish the line of scrimmage. Now. If Georgia Southern starts
the game eight nine minute drive and forces them out
of their game plan, that will be the recipe for shape.
Uh words, what it is? Yeah, he's be cousin. Run run, run,
claw keeps chicken right, just like in these military games.

(32:04):
I'm really excited for this game, guys. I'm really excited
for today's football. I really you know, sometimes the show
and a couple of good games and whatever. I don't
care about Wait Forest playing against Circular or whatever. These
games I'll fired up, I really have is a big
game for both these programs. Georgia Southern is a good
football team. We saw what they did when they went
up there the Happy Valley. You've got two good football teams.

(32:26):
You know this. I tell you what, guys. This Sun
Belt versus Map thing really is pretty cool. It's it
really is becoming a good little rivalry. Yeah. I think
games fired up because he senses that the players are
fired up. I think that's what we're gonna see from
you know, this first game at one thirty right through
New Orleans Bowl, which kicks off at nine o'clock. On
the East coach, I don't know why they're not kicking

(32:47):
off at nude. Yeah, well you got the Celebration Bowl
at celebrations that at noon. But I think what you're
gonna see is like I'm pumped up for these games too,
because I think these teams really care, and I think
these players really care, and they care for reasons that
transcend NFL. You know. I mean like you might have
two or three, like gay Bit said early, you have

(33:07):
two or three kids on Middle Tennessee, two or three
kids on app State who will play in the NFL
or have a shot. But this is more about putting
a capper on your season, sending out your seniors with
a victory, having that trophy in your trophy case that
says we won the Cure Bowl, we won the Las
Vegas Bowl, we won the New Mexico Ball. That really
matters to those kids. And that's why this first Saturday

(33:28):
of the Bowl season for me, is always my favorite.
It's funny that game, but sometimes you get to New
Year's Day and you're kind of like it could be
a bit of a snooze. Not the case on December fifteen.
It's the styles as well. I mean I want to
see the triple option Georgia something go up against this
defensive front in Eastern Michigan. Even though they're given up
a lot of yards, they played toe to toe with

(33:49):
some of the better teams on their schedule, and they
knocked off Perdue. I mean, let's not forget. I mean
that was earlier in the year when Purdue was fresh.
Doesn't matter. It's a big ten team. That's huge, so
we'll see I mean, is a dynamic player. We said
a ten touchdown passes, eight twenty two rushing yards, thirteen
rushing touchdowns. That will be the matchup. You have to
take away works on the triple option and in order

(34:11):
to win this match. And this is a big deal
for Georgia Southern. I mean, people don't realize that this
was a program that was not even in the FBS
a couple of years ago. That you know, they made
the transition from FCS to FBS just a couple of
years ago, and we're seeing those types of schools actually
have success quickly. You know, teams that go for FCS.
Look look at look at Appalachian State. Wasn't that long ago?

(34:32):
State was FCS Division one Double A. These schools are
making the leap to FBS and actually doing quite well
and quality football. I mean when you watch these time games,
I mean you get you get quality play, quality quarterback
playing games that go to the fourth quarter so well,
I mean it should be intriguing. I mean that this battle,
I think it's a five thirty kick uh in Birmingham,

(34:53):
So keep an eye out for that. It's the second
to last game of the day. It's a five thirty
kick in Birmingham. I like Eastern Michigan. You like Georgia,
like Georgia Southern. You're just Southern. Lay in the three
and a half with that, you think they win by
what seven ten or you're taking Yeah, I think that's fair.
I think seven to ten is a fair assessment. Yeah,
it should should be a game. You're taking the over

(35:14):
and you're taking Eastern Michigan. Are you taking them on that?
You gotta take them on the money line, right, Yeah.
You know people on the chatter asking all guys are
actually asked about the FCS stuff too. We'll go to
the Apple catching up on the background where we come back,
I'll be talking Middle Tennessee State. In the app state

(37:17):
Can you hear me? Yes, sir, I want you. I
wish you were in the studio. You need to be
a little Mills lane between me and Joe. Joe and
I are arguing here. I want your take on this.
I refuse to aun mute Joe on Twitter because he's
a serial retweeter and I will not read his retweets.
Is that bad Twitter etikutte? Uh? Yeah, you know. But

(37:39):
I'm fine. I'm following him at least I'm not to
me the the etiquette is, I follow him, but I
cannot the just the incessant retweets of nonsense. I don't
want to read him, knew him? That nonsense that I too.
Uh No, I I count on Joe's retweets like I don't.

(38:00):
Wise I wouldn't know who like who's nominated for the
Linebacker the year and stuff like that that Rich puts together.
I retweet his stuff and you know that. Then it's okay, Well,
you're right. You believe that he's ripping you for retweeting
his own work, right exactly. No, no, no, not my work.
He retweets other stuff, not my stuff. I retweets stuff

(38:20):
all football related for the most part, and I mean
it's pretty, it's important, and I like original content. I
p clab original content. But I seen it for the
show too, so I mean think of it that way.
Let's turn our attention to the last ball game, Middle
Tennessee State and app State. I think it's an eight
o'clock hit o'clock and no Scott's afield that led Appalachian

(38:43):
State to the last three bow wins over Ohio and Toledo.
They got the victory last year in dominating fashion, thirty
four to nothing. You look at Middle Tennessee State and
stuck Still. They stepped up last year with the thirty
five to thirty win over very blue collar, gutty Arkansas
State team solid quarterbacks here. You have Zack Thomas for
Appalachian State and you have Brent stock Still for Middle

(39:06):
Tennessee State that has thrown for over twenty touchdowns completed
seventy of his passes. Rich I think they're the more
complete team, tilely at the wide receiver position. They have
the coaching staff in place and they won last year.
I think they go out and style seven to ten
point win over app State. Yeah, I'm with you on
this one. I I like this Middle Tennessee team. In fact,

(39:29):
I think they underachieved a bit this year. With the
veteran quarterback Brent stocks Stockstille has had some problems with injuries,
not the case this year. He was durable. He was
available all year long. But they never established a running game.
This is a veteran football team. Lots of seniors on
both sides of the ball. Seniors on the offensive line,
kids like Darius Harris on defense, Seniors who are gonna

(39:51):
play in the NFL. D Q Thomas, a young safety
sophomore read Blanket Ship. They are very talented on defense.
And while I like the app State team to be
giving points without their head coach, I like Middle Tennessee
to to win this game outright. You want to give
me seven points, I'm gonna take it. No. Jenny Len
Murray Moore hurt this team later in the year. Now

(40:11):
they went toe to toe app State did with Penn State.
Pushed Penn State and Trace McSorley to the limit. They
lost that matchup by seven points. Now, Middle Tennessee State
has only won two Bowl games under stocks So when
he's been head coach, but one came last year and
they were big underdogs in that ballgame to Arkansas State.
So they stepped up again. I look at this offensive

(40:33):
well and defensively to holding opposing offenses to around thirty
nine percent on third down conversions. They went toe to
toe with U A B in the conference championship games.
So from a physicality aspect, I think they match up
with app State. Now. App State only given up a
hundred forty rushing yards per game, excuse me, a hundred
forty passing yards per game, one one on the ground.

(40:54):
And I still think though they pushed tempo, I liked
the over and I think Middle Tennessee State school his
first and forces Zak Thomas to match them score for
score in this ball game. Yeah, and you know, you
would think that losing Janalen More early in the year
would be a deal breaker for this team. It didn't happen.
I mean, and that really is a credit to Scott Sadderfield.
That's what Louisville is getting, you know, that ability to

(41:15):
coach players up those two star at best three star
type kids, and that's what Sadderfield did. It's interesting that
he left the program. This was a guy who played
for the school, spent his entire career in North Carolina.
So now he takes his game to Louisville. Will be
interesting to see how quickly he could turn around the
Louisville Cardinals. But app State is a complete football team.

(41:36):
They run the ball with Darrenton Evans. They had that
outstanding defense that Joe touched upon, terrific against the past.
So I want to see Brent stock Still and ty
Lee versus one of the best secondaries in the country
led by Clifton Duck. I liked the over here again too.
I just think all the games are gonna They're gonna
push two games typically go high there for the most part,

(41:57):
maybe Nashville Championship, like that semifinal game. You know you
got on the line. But I like the over here.
You know the early Bowl games, guys, and once again,
we can't. You can't just blanket coverage or blindly say
something and um and I had cast every game. But generally, guys,
these earlier Bowl games are the higher scoring ones. They

(42:18):
haven't been as off for a long right, and the
steaks aren't as high in the sense that you know
in some of these other bowl games, you know, it's
it's it's big time. You know, coaches are on the
hot seat. They need to win, like guy like hardbody
needs to win this bowl game. Otherwise I know how
state loss gets talked about more. Right, you win the
bowl game. It's a little different now, so they're not

(42:39):
sort of you know, I think today these coaches are
sort of, let's have some fun out here, guys, let's
empty in the playbook. Let's do not flee flicker that
we didn't do and and you sort of see teams
open up the playbook and these in these sort of
earlier bowl games, Joe, So I think, and you can
look at the overs today and as you go on,
and that's the one thing I don't like too. There's
too much of a layoff right on. The teams just

(43:01):
start the same sometimes it's almost like a new season
starts again. I mean, this year it's a little different.
They've done a little bit better. I believe it was
twenty six days in between games, so from like Clemson,
Notre Dames, in the World, etcetera, to twenty nine days off.
That's a long time. Guys. Life changes in a month
sometimes for teams. It's a good point. That's one we

(43:23):
haven't brought up. I forgot to bring that up, and
I'm glad, Gabe. Did you know we talked a lot
about coaching changes, we talked a lot about kids leaving.
We haven't talked about the layoff. You know, these guys
are used to that, that steady drumbeat of every week
they really get one by, you know, and so it's
every week during the season. Now you have this long break.

(43:43):
We don't know how kids are going to react to that.
And then the other thing to keep in mind too,
I should have brought this up to Jamie Heath. You know,
there are certain kids that were banged up late in
the year and now all of a sudden were kids
that weren't even playing at the end of the year,
and now all of a sudden, it's like, damn, I
forgot about that kid. Now he's playing and he's And
to your point in terms of why I like the
totals in the overs is because you get younger players
that that coaches want to get involved in the offensive

(44:06):
defense uh for next year. So these players come in
hungry wanting to fight for position battles. If you are
a recher freshman or a true freshman and you're playing
in a bowl game, you want the opportunity to showcase
for the coach. So that's a matchup as well. I
think when you break it down in terms of layoff,
quarterback to wide receiver, relationship, offensive line continuity factors in.

(44:27):
But to your point as well, if a team is
banged up at the end of the year and now
you have three weeks in terms of resting those bodies,
that could be a benefit into stepping up, especially if
you are an underdog like Arizona State today. You get
healthy and you have the opportunity to game plan with
new talent. If you know Harry's not there, Herman, the staffords,
you had the opportunity to game plan for an extra

(44:49):
three weeks. Fifteen practices. I mean, and I'm not saying
there's a talent on that roster that's equivalent to Nikkil Harry,
but you've had fifteen practices and almost an entire month.
It's not like this was a knee jerk decision or
something sudden that they didn't expect, or a kid turned
an ankle while they were out in Vegas, and now,
oh now we have to you know, game plan for that.
They've known about this, so now there's an opportunity to

(45:10):
really develop some of the young talent. Maybe a kid
who caught a dozen passes, you know, played well on
the practice squad. Now it's like, hey, listen, let's turn
this kid loose. He could be one of our key
targets next year. I think that player could be Derby
today does have only one receptions, used to play in
the slot, but he's he's got the speed to take
the top off. And so that's that's what's so much

(45:31):
fun for me because you know, I guarantee you it'll
start today. There's gonna be somebody who you didn't expect
to have a big You're gonna get a bowl m
v P today that you were like, I don't really
seeing that kid too much this year. But this is
when stars are born. Stars begin to be born in December. Yeah,
so the last game today is in Middle Tennessee State.
We're all on Middle Tennessee State, right, Yeah, I like,

(45:55):
I like Middle Tennessee State here. Yeah, so you guys
talk about it. I guess there were somewhat a little
bit of underachievers, you could say. But to me, I
look at these kids, and they went seven and one
in conference play. If not for twelve men on the field,
they probably when the when the conference. Um, I like
the experience. You talked about it. You've got an experienced quarterback,

(46:17):
you got seniors, wide receivers, you got juniors or wide receiver.
You've got kids that have been here before. I think
Middle Tennessee State match up real well. I got listen.
App States defense was awesome. How the hell are you
gonna argue with the team's give it like fifteen points
a game or whatever. But at the same point in time,
I think this app State defense gets talked about like

(46:37):
there me and Joe Green and steel curtain or something.
I like the experience of Middle Tennessee State here. And
once again too, I bet against I really, I'm doing this.
I'm not kidding. I'm betting against every intern coach this year.
Inter coachpending against you, simple as that give me the
points with Middle Tennessee State here. Yeah, last year I
said it. The only coach to win their their bowl

(46:58):
game as an insurance basis was Old El Hagen's and
Florida State over Southern Miss. So and they were heavy
favorites too. If I recall, they were double digit favorites
against it. It wasn't like you, so we'll say, I
mean Southern Miss didn't step up. The hardest game in
terms of breaking down, not just from a football perspective,
but from the gambling angle, is this Tuesday matchup in

(47:20):
the rat Tone Bowl Northern Illinois with Sutton Smith and
Children's at the quarterback position, and you A b uh.
You look at Bill Clark and that team last year
got blown out by Ohio and the Bahamas Bowl didn't
step up. Now have an opportunity for redemption. But both
teams combined rich nine three total SATs fifty for Northern Illinois,

(47:42):
forty three for U. A B. It's a mirror images
of both teams. And for that matter, I leaned to U.
A B. I don't feel strongly about it, but I
like the Blazers in this ball game. I think that's
a very good encapsulation. And you have two teams that
play outstanding defense, strong at the line of scrimmage. Again,

(48:03):
I'll encourage anybody who hasn't watched Northern Illinois watched Sutton Smith.
I mean the kid is an absolute blur. Got to
the CALB as a as a running back. Now is
playing kind of a you know, hybrid outside linebacker defensive end,
so quick off the snap. I mean he is a force.
And despite the fact that he's a junior and he's undersized,

(48:24):
I think this kid is gonna try the NFL at
this point. I don't know where he gets drafted. But
if you have somebody who can get into the backfield
that quickly, that consistently put up monster numbers, he'll pick
off passes, he'll drop back in coverage. So Northern Illinois,
Sutton Smith. I want to see him one more time,
maybe last time as a as a college player, depending
on his decision for two thousand and nineteen. I like

(48:46):
you a B. We talked in the last you know,
we were talking about app State. We're talking about injured players.
I want to see you a B with a backfield
that is finally healthy. Their quarterback aj Eardly uh non
healthy in November. Now he's had some time off and
Spencer Brown was dealing with uh an ankle injury. This
is a game between defenses, first of all, I love
a Tuesday night football game. I mean that that in itself,

(49:08):
Tuesday at seven o'clock that uses MAC. That's awesome on
a Tuesday and we'll get a chance to watch, you know,
college football. But in a game between two teams that
are really driven by their defense. Is the best offensive
player in this game is Spencer Brown? I think he's healthy.
I think he's the difference. I think he grinds out
about a hundred yards and a couple of touchdowns and

(49:28):
you A B wins And in terms of your point,
Johnston two has played for you. You a being in
a pinch. Shouldn't you know quarterback be an issue in
that ball game? Game? When you look at this matchup,
you abs last game wasn't over over in Middle Tennessee State.
They said it at forty four and a half. You
have Cochrane, you have Sutton Smith. They're only given up
on you nine Russian yorks for a game U A
B one nineteen on the ground. But something tells me

(49:52):
this could be an over in this ball game. Incredibly
low total at forty three. It's unbelievable. Actually, how we
was somebody's college totals? Are it now? It usually used
to be the NFL was was low and in college
when it was higher, and I was the NFL totals
at fifty five fifty eight range at times. How we
we had sixty three earlier in the year. Both these

(50:12):
teams have been big under teams this year. Joe u
a B eight and five to the under, nor Illinois
nine and four to the under. You guys talked about
the sacks. I mean Nor illinoiss fifty sacks on the season.
You know, we talked about it earlier about teams and
why I don't like to lane. You know, these teams
have got to a bowl game. I think they enjoy
the festivities too much. When I go bowling literally and fatively,

(50:34):
and they go to the dinners and the the events,
it's not really a business triper actually enjoying themselves the
first couple of times they go to a bowl game
and listen, U a p last year got tattooed then
their bowl game. So that's the angle I'm looking at here.
I'm intrigued, and I don't know. I'm not gonna lie
to you. I haven't dug down deep to see how

(50:54):
the kids are handling this and how the team was
handling it. But last year it really was a vacation
for them, and I can't believe about our programs back
went to a ball game. Is this a business trip
this time? Because they lost in the ball game last year?
I saw the tend to think it is. But I'm
not going to give us Nor Illinois here, guys, if
we talk about Bowl games, to me their road games
their neutral field, but to me their road games. That

(51:15):
Northern Illinois been one of the best traveling teams, seven
team and four straight up on the road the last
twenty one football games. This is a road trip for them.
I think Nor Illinois sort of under you know, under
appreciate a little bit for what they've accomplished over the years.
Getting back on track. Great to come back. Uh. In
the MAC Championship game, I'm going with the MAC team here.

(51:37):
Give me the Huskies. Yeah. I think when you look
at these matchups for for the first day of action,
my three best bets today are to lean I like
Eastern Michigan and I like Arizona State. Those are my
three early on. I mean this game that we just
spoke about, I have I leaned to U. A Bingo
is not not strong enough field. The one thing I'll
bring up to in terms of trends, Uh Gabe brought

(51:59):
uh Northern Illinois on the road, but Northern Illinois as
a bowl team recently has not done well. I mean
Rod Carry in particular. I think the coaches will really
be under the microscope. Love what Bill Clark has done.
He's been you know, he's been a miraculous coach over
the last two years since U A B came back.
But they had that poor showing that you guys have

(52:20):
brought up last year where they got completely annihilated. And
Rod Carry, the n i U head coach, Owen five
straight up in his last five bowl games. Owen five
against the spread in bowl games. So both of these
coaches I think will be coaching Tuesday night with a
hell of a lot to prove. When you look at
Children's overall Children's For the offense, he threw for three hundred,

(52:41):
but they came in the MAC Championship game against Buffalo's
got fifteen touchdown passes. Three of them came in the
in the bowl, and he had struggled as a passer game.
So he hasn't been as consistent I think more than Illinois.
To me, has played better on a neutral field or
on the road against some of the better Power five
teams in recent years, but in Bowl game it seems
like they played down to the level of competition. And

(53:03):
that's why I favor Bill Clark in this team. I
think he's a uh better head coach. I really do.
I I would agree with that, you know, I would
agree in terms of that. When we come back, we'll
be talking about the other games next week. Joe Lisie,
Ritzard Manello, and Gay Marenzi live from Studio thirty four.
Coming right back.
