Opahlikah High School football alongside legendary coach Spence McCracken, mac
McCracken and Jason Lee. Here's the voice of the Bulldogs,

Welcome n the bulldod Nation, Welcome to another thrilling of
Friday Night under the lights. We're coming to you from
Phoenix City here Garrett Harrison Stadium as we get ready
for the open like a Bulldogs to clash with the
Central Phoenix City Red Devils here in a pivotal AHSAA
Class seven a Reagion two showdown. I'm Van Ridge alongside
Hall of Famer and coach Spence McCracken. Matt McCracken our
sideline reporter, and Jason Lee will be our spider and

engineer and also our halftime host. Tonight, battle of heavyweights,
hoping like it comes in six and two overall three
and two in region play, and Bulldogs looking to bounce
back after a tough forty two to twenty road loss
in Enterprise last week. But don't count the Dogs out.
They've shown some grit all season long, big wins over
Dothan Pike Road and Benjamin Russell and the Dogs are
hungry to get back in the win column tonight. Standing

in their way though, this Red Hot number one, a
Central Red Devil team seven and one overall, their lone
loss on the season. Coming to ause, I AMG Squad
and They're a perfect five and zero in region play. Central,
fresh off of statement, went over Carver Montgomery last week
fifty eight to thirty five, and they've been dominant, averaging
over forty six points per game, led by a running

back Jayshan Woodhouse and quarterback Bobby Coleman, who's the younger
brother of Auburn University wide receiver Cam Coleman. Of course,
we saw here a few years ago had Central Phoenix
City Opelikah. Those had Central's number lately. Just last year,
the Bulldogs stunned the Red Devils at Bulldog Stadium, winning
twenty three to fourteen. They've taken two of the last
three meetings. However, the Dogs haven't won here at Garrett

Harrison Stadium in quite some time, back in twenty fifteen,
the last time the Bulldogs were able to get that
and done. Regent standings really tight playoff positioning on the
line tonight. Central right now leading the pack, but Opealaikah
controls are on destiny to get in the playoffs. The Bulldogs,
with these final two region games, just need one win
to punt their ticket to the seven eight state playoffs.

head football coach Brian Moore, presented by South State Bank.
Now with coach, here's Van Riggs.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
Well, Coach, I know it was a tough game Friday
night on the road against the team I think that
was really hungry for a win, a team that was
o and four and they came out seemed like right
off the bat, and of course I've been trying to
start fast and they take the lead early. Just kind
of talk about the game a little bit.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
Well, their will was stronger and oars and it's unfortunate,
and you know, I think it's it's difficult at times
for kids to understand really everybody around the program that
you know that that is a quality opponent and has
been for a long time and it's always been difficult
to play there. And it doesn't matter really, you know

(03:53):
what's going on, and I don't know you know, obviously
for them, they played their tough stretch of the region
play and we're playing on the back. So it's very different,
you know, you know, because they're gonna win the next
two games as well, and so you know, for us,
it's disappointing, you know, and it's my job to help
us understand better, you know, what's to come, how difficult

(04:16):
it is to go on the road. It was our
first true road test, you know, going all the way
down there. I thought we handled it well as far
as how we looked. You know, I'm always looking for
queues and anything like like anybody is about how we're
going to play, you know, because I don't know when
we're going in the ball game. I mean, you know,
our kids kind of go through the same basic structure
all week.

Speaker 4 (04:35):
It's hard to tell. I mean, some practices are better
than others. You know.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Our Wednesday was just okay. But I thought our our preparation,
the way that we ate lunch together, you know, we
drove down, we were there early.

Speaker 4 (04:45):
Everything was smooth sailing. We were on time. All the
restaurants were right on.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Time, with our food on the table and everything ready
to go. I thought pregame was good, and I even
thought it was our best right like right before kickoff,
I thought it was our best warm up. I mean,
you know, we do a a lot of good verse good,
a lot of what we call mixed group, like we
don't just go out there and just start playing like
we have gone through inside period and some real physical
portions of prep.

Speaker 4 (05:10):
And I thought that was good.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
And I don't know, I just I think it was
one of those deals where you know, the positive is
our kids believe that even if we're down, we can
come back. But I think sometimes you sort of lean
on that and you say it's okay, that's fourteen nothing.
You know, we'll come back. We've come back in six
games this year or whatever. And I think it just
was to a point where you know, we couldn't do that,
and then you know, we made it fourteen seven, were
going to halftime. It's spitting rain, and we didn't handle

(05:34):
that great either, but we did get the ball in the.

Speaker 4 (05:36):
Second half, but we went four and out. You know,
we fourth and one.

Speaker 3 (05:39):
I'm like, you know, Blake Johnson's gonna make a yard,
you know, And so I called that even if we're
on our own twenty probably in reality.

Speaker 4 (05:47):
Because I think we can do that.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
We'd run the same play at the goal line with him,
and he walked in the end zone, you know, six
or seven snaps earlier before half, and you know, and
that's that's my fault, the decision to do that.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
At the four alre they drive and score and.

Speaker 3 (06:01):
Then we throw a pick six and it makes it
twenty eight to seven, and you're like, wow, this thing
is unraveled on us, and we're okay, we just we
didn't do a very good.

Speaker 4 (06:08):
Job of handling the momentum swing.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
And again, it's my job to make sure our team
understands both who we're playing and then the ebbs and
flows of games.

Speaker 4 (06:18):
And I will say this, our response has been good.

We're frustrated and disappointed in ourselves in the product we
put out there for Opalaika. We didn't represent our school,
we didn't represent our families, we didn't represent.

Speaker 4 (06:29):
Our our our program the right way.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
Because in my two years, nothing like that has happened.
You know, everything's been either win or it's so you know,
three points here or there. I mean, we've been in
every ball game, and so that was disappointing. But we'll
write the ship and we better pretty quickly.

coach Brian Moore as Bulldogs getting Red to take on
the Central Phoenix City Red Devils tonight here on the
road a gear at Harrison Stadium. We talked about it
in the post game show. You can kind of flip
the script now this week you can kind of be
the hunter, yeah, and not the hunted. You were the

you know, the favorite going into that game last week.
This week you'll be the heavy underdog going and facing
the number one team in the region in Central.

Speaker 4 (07:13):
There's no question.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
And this is the best team we've played in two
years since I've been here, so and I can't remember truthfully,
many others you know when I was an assistant that
are as talented as this team. They're junior heavy, starting
with their quarterback and their receivers, but they are elite
skilled players. Talking about you know, full four speed everywhere,
which is what you expect from Central. You know, that's

(07:36):
the type of player that they've had in the past.
They're significantly better than they were a year ago. I mean,
this team beats the team from Central a year ago
by twenty or thirty points.

Speaker 4 (07:44):
They're that talented, I think, and you know, we'll have
to go and challenge it.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
But I think what people have done in Opalaca really
never has both again last year when I was here
as the head coach and also as an assistant in
the years past, is we've never backed down.

Speaker 5 (07:56):
You know.

Speaker 3 (07:57):
We've always played Central tough and understood how how good
they are and how well coached they are, and we
respected them, but we went after them.

Speaker 4 (08:04):
You know, we lined up and played.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
And we have good players too, you know, and so
but we can't give them a bunch of possessions if
it's you know, they if they're in the thirties or
forties score and it's going to be tough, you know,
it don't have to be like last year and be
low scoring.

Speaker 4 (08:18):
And we have to handle the clock.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
And the possessions and the play count and all that
stuff to win. But again, we're excited about the opportunity, man,
I mean this is you know, we don't shy away
from that. We're excited about being able to play the
number one team that stayed.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
On the road, and you're in a position now you
control your own destiny. You need one win here in
the next two weeks to secure a playoff spot. A
lot of other teams are sitting there hoping some other
things happen to get in the playoffs, but you put
yourself in a situation where you can make back to
back playoff trips.

Speaker 3 (08:45):
And that was my message to the kids on Sunday
was like, I mean, it feels awful.

Speaker 4 (08:49):
I mean, I know that our fans like that ride
home is like that.

Speaker 3 (08:53):
It's just the worst sinking feeling when you went to
just all of it. You know, you're three hours from home,
you get home at one am, just you're disappointed, and
you're like racking your brain as a coach, like what
do I How do I make this better for our kids?
How can I control it better to where we understand.

Speaker 4 (09:11):
The level of opponent we're going to play and all that.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
And I know you guys are probably watching Huddle film
too on the ride back, trying to figure out, you know,
what went wrong? How do we improve here?

Speaker 3 (09:18):
And that's where I mean, I watched three hours of film,
you know, and I was able to you know, because
my thing is always just you know, you don't want
to fool with it and see it, but you have
to like go to work immediately. The only thing I
know to do is go back to work. And like
I said, our kids, I said, look, man, we're still
six and two.

Speaker 4 (09:34):
Okay, it sucks, what just hap.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
Excuse me, but and it's terrible and it feels awful,
but we're six and two. We control our own desty Van,
you're exactly right. Let's get going, man, Yeah, and let's
go win, and let's send these seniors out. Let's win
these next two weeks, compete our tails off, get to
the bye week, figure out what our first round upon
it looks like like the best football still in front
of us. Let's you know, let's send Blake Johnson and
baby TJ and all those seniors, those twenty seven seniors

Let's send them out the right way and just rally
the troops.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
And I don't feel any kind of let down or
anything like that. We're still not healthy, but that that's
that's where we're at. This This year is gonna be
like that Leakedrick still won't play and we're just you know,
so hopeful that maybe next week.

Speaker 4 (10:13):
But but we're gonna we're gonna play for those seniors
and send those kids out the right way.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
I kind of look back at last year too, where
Central loses the game to Opalaika, they end up the
three seed and they go to the state championship game.

Speaker 3 (10:25):
So the path, you know, Jason Lee was he was saying,
you know, hey, maybe better to be this, you know,
and like I can't look up yet, you know, or whatever.
We we just we've got to, you know, keep our
nose down. But you're right, that happens, and and you
don't know why it happens or whatever, but sometimes your
matchups change. And heck, the region that we're that we're
matched up with is all over.

The place too.

Speaker 3 (10:43):
Who an the world knows where besides Thomps and where
those guys are gonna fall.

You know as far as they're seeding.

So we just got to, you know, handle our business,
play extremely well. We'll have to play by far our
best game, uh and give ourselves a chance to win it.

Well, Well, I think we're gonna get caught up in

Experienced a game like last week where you know you
wanted to go into a football game and I just
knew our kids were gonna play well, and we just
laid an egg. Yeah, we played good, and Enterprise played
well at bottom line, and so well.

Speaker 2 (12:56):
One thing you can do when you're on the mat
and get back up and get ready for the number
one team in the state, you can wipe that taste
out of your mouth pretty pretty quickly if you can
pull off this monumental upset here on the road against
a team that many believe they haven't seen quite some
time in our area. This is a central team that's
getting national recognition. They're inside the top fifty in the
nation according to max preps, a rank number one now

in Class seven A, one of the top teams in
the state. They got weapons all over the place, and
when you look at their roster and playmakers, coach, they're juniors.
They're all coming back next year. Defensively too, they're very
young as well. So this is a team that even
has a playmaker and a freshman and wide receiver that
many think is one of the best players I've ever seen.

Right, that's right, That's what I was told on the
way over here. Is Brailin Averett is his name number eleven.

That's right. Yeah, he's a freshman. He whizz, so he
certainly is a good player. So we're gonna take quick

Actually that was number six for the Red Devils, the
intended wide receiver JJ Joyner incomplete second and ten.

We had a good pass rush on the outside by

punting team for the Red Devils. Their backup quarterback Abe
hat Maker is the punter who stands right at the
goal line and Andre Van will try to get a
good return around midfield.
