stadium for more coverage of Opelaikah High School football alongside
legendary co Spence McCracken, Mac McCracken and Jason Lee. Here's

We welcome you in this playoff time in Alabama and
the road to Birmingham begins tonight here in Trustful for
the Opalaika Bulldogs opening round of the AHSAA Class seven
eight State Playoffs as the Opalaika Bulldogs and hit the
road to take on the Hewitt Trustful Huskies in a
high stakes Friday night showdown alongside Hall of Fame coach
Spence mccrack and mc McCracken adjacent Lee.

I'm Being Riggs.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
Ope Like enters a postseason with a seven and three
overall record, finishing third in Region two. Under head coach
Brian Moore and the Bulldogs have battled through a tough
schedule and now look to make noise in their thirty
third playoff appearance in school history. Dogs have leaned on
the ground and pound identity. They've averaged one hundred and
seventy six rushing yards per game.

Johnson has been a work course. He's carried the ball
seventeen times for ninety nine yards of that regular season
finale and the hammer Blake Johnson has been the short
yardage machine, racking up seven touchdowns on the season. He
averages just under five yards of carry and at quarterback
sometimore with Cooper gonna ask me a game manager for
the most part tonight and delivers some timely throws to

keep that defense. And you at Trustville honest. Now on
the other side, who at Trustful? The Region three runner up?
They come in eight and two riding momentum after a

the Huskies feature a potent offense. They average nearly thirty

He's the coach's son, but senior Zach Benedict is slowly
returning from injury. And we'll see a lot of the
action to night as well. And this marks the first
meeting between opal Like and he had Trustful, and it
promises to be a battle of grit, speed and playoff intensity.
Here tonight Bulldogs three and seven all time on the
road in first round games. But you know, hard to believe.

This is only the eleventh time in school history the
Oplika Bulldogs have been on the road in a first
round playoff matchup. Should have been exciting when win or
go home for the Bulldogs tonight here and Hewett trust boy,

Bulldogs head football coach Brian Moore as we continue with
our pregame show here on the Kicker.

And this is the playoff, baby, this is the you're
you're you gotta play and win or you're out if
you play, if you don't play well and you lose,
your out the other way around.

Speaker 6 (04:03):
But we have got to do five or six.

Speaker 2 (04:07):
Things that we're not doing consistently. Let's start defensively. We've
got to stop this hut trustful running game. We've got
to be able to stop their running game. They've got
two running backs that run well, they've got two season
quarterbacks and uh so we've got we've got to tackle,

got to stop the run and tackle well.

We got to get turnovers.

We hadn't gotten many turnovers in the last week or two.
If you hit people hard enough, you can knock.

We've got to stop third and fourth down conversions. And
we know stupid penalties by our defense, laid hits, face masks,
crap like that.

We don't need to do that.

And we need to pressure this quarterback on passing downs.
They're gonna throw the ball on us, but they're gonna
try to run first. I got a really, really good
feeling about that. All right, on offense, we have to
be able to run the football for three yards or more.
And I'm really serious about this one. They're gonna load

that box van with six seven people in the box
and they're gonna force us to throw, but we can
still run the ball. It's gonna be smart about what
we choose and so being able to run the ball consistently,
we need to make some big plays, big plays, big plays,
ten yard runs, fifteen yard passes that just de moralizes

a defense. No stupid penalties, and listen, our quarterbacks a
tenth grader, the other one's a junior. They don't need
to make any mistakes tonight. No mistakes, no turnovers, no
what interceptions?

turf field here at Hewitt Trustful Stadium. But they've got
a triple decker press box here that's very nice, very
hospitable folks here and Hugh at Trustful to our left
up on the hill, they've got a fifty yard indoor.
I say indoor. It is a covered practice facility. But
they've got the lit up Hugh and Trustful logos up

there on the hill which is off to the distance
to our left, and before the sun set here the
mountains all around the stadium. It's a really nice venue
here at Hewitt Trustful. We got captains on the field though,
getting ready to take the field for the Open like
a bulldogs. Mac McCracken getting ready to bring out Jalen Washington.
And I also see here Lake Drick Burks a captain.

Jordan Waits, a captain for the Bulldogs and also for
oph Like is number twenty five. Jamel Griffin and captains

Van, they're fired up there in the fog store. Man, Hey,

floor to Bam Prescott, who gave one great speech, just

This is the first time that we've deferred in about
three or four weeks. I think, well, we're going to
play defense first, which I basically like.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
To be interesting to see who comes out first. At
quarterback number fifteen, Zach Benedict is warming up down on
the field and he has forty of sixty two on
the season, six hundred and thirty nine yards, five touchdowns,
two interceptions. He's played in just six games this season.
He was injured in week number two, came back in
the pratbull game. Got the start there freshman Jack Floyd,
the coach's son of Josh Floyd. He had gotten a

lot of reps. He actually had nine hundred and sixteen
passing yards eighty two attempts for one hundred and ten yards.
But Floyd Moore of the runner one hundred and four
carries six hundred and twenty two yards just twenty one
carries one hundred and forty two yards for Zach Benedict.
So we'll see just what Hewitt decides to do with
the quarterback right out of the gate. Here here we go,

and the Bulldogs set to kick it off from left
to right. Grees has a teed up in the forty
yard line to our right. Awaiting things in the end
zone are the uit trustful Hope Huskies and Dylan Cope,
one of their star wide receivers, one of the deep
men for the Huskies, and also back deep one of
their outstanding running back C. J. Davis Reese hoid of

points sued into this one end over end and will
be fielded at the one, but it will be returnable
here for Davis. He's a dangerous return man, but he's
gonna be brought down shy of the twenty yard line.

Could you're out of seventeen yard line.

That's a great, great job. Our kicking teams excellent. Now
we're gonna start six junior, sixth juniors, four seniors, and
one sophomore on defense. And listen, we've been hurt the
last four or five games and Brian's done a great
job of getting them all well. We got all everybody
back well again. Now, so let's see how we can

play defense.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
Trustful will start out with two wide receivers right one
wide side of the field and then empty the backfield.
Benedict will throw a screen pass far side of the field.
It is complete cops got it up near the first
down marker across the twenty five. He's going to be
up close to the twenty seven yard line and it's
going to be close to nine yards depending on the
spot there.

Speaker 4 (14:12):
So just a little straight screen and they're gonna go
hurry back.

Speaker 3 (14:16):
Second down in short one here for the Huskies, and
that time almost a busted play in the backfield, but
they will get enough for the first down. Quarterback keeper
Zach Benedict Andy got it up to the twenty nine
yard line, picked up two yards, just needed one, so
a first down quickly for the Huskies.

Out of the gate. It'll be first and ten hew
at Trustful.

From there on a twenty nine yard line, they'll bring
a man in motion. Benedict quick hand off Noe quarterback
keeper straight up the middle. He gets to the thirty

Thomas and it will be second down in seven upcoming
here for you at Trustful. Just underway you at Trustful,

a quick first down. They're going fast. They slow down
here on this second down play as they checked the sidelines.
Three wide to the left side of the field. Here
for Benedict. Out of the shotgun. He'll empty the backfield again.
Wants to throw a screen and it's dropped that time.

I don't say it was a backwards pass or will
be an incomplete, but it'll be a third down up
coming here for you at Trustill. Big down here for

Now Benedict will check the sidelines Huskies from their own
thirty one yard line and Benedict drops backs, got time
throws across the middle incomplete at the forty eight yard line.
He tried to get it to Dylan Cope, but it's
incomplete and the Huskies will have to punt it away.
Good stop there. Defense gives up one first down, but

Thirty nine and that'll send Andre Van inside the forty
at around the thirty nine yard line awaiting this punt.
The punt got away from the punter and the Bulldogs
happen at the ten yard line. Wow, oh my goodness,
another misk you this has really hunted. It was blocked
actually by the Bulldogs. That happens so quickly. But it

will swatted down Jason Lee on that one and it
got blocked and the Bulldogs will have it at the
Husky eleven yard line. What a play there by the
Bulldog special teams. That was something coach Moore thought they
could take advantage of. And now they're set up first
down at the Husky eleven yard line. So here's the
Bulldogs wide receiver to the right. Gotta cash in here,

quarterback with Cooper hand off in the backfield. See j
Johnson hit by one and laid down by another. When
it's Harrison alone that comes in and finishes off Johnson.
They were teen off on that play on first down,
and it will be second down at eleven. Backed up
now at the twelve yard line.

Van Jakoby Jackson was actually on that block punt there
for the Bulldogs.

pay for big mistakes. Hopefully the Bulldogs can make them
pay here, empty backfield here for Wit Cooper. Now he'll

the tailback slipped down.

and made crucial throws. I mean the double move was

I've known Jalen a longtime coach. He listened my neighborhood,
one of my neighbors. I loved this for him tonight too,
because you know, this season, I think it's been a
little frustrating for him at times. You know, he's missed
the pass here, missed the drive, slipped it down. You know,
it's just hadn't been that breakout player this year that
he wanted to be by he came through tonight.

Yeah, I mean he has, like it's so funny called
intuition or whatever. But at halftime, I just you know,
we had talked about him. We always go make adjustments,
and typically it's players over plays. You know, we're trying
to figure out you know what, you know what, guys
don't have touches, and we charted all that stuff, and
you know, for us to get Jalen going there, I
thought was absolutely crucial. You know, in the game we
needed him, and uh you know, he obviously rose to

the occasion and just kept fighting, and like you said,
you know he's look musical chairs at quarterback too. Now
that's right, and it's been tough for those receivers, Bennett
and those guys, but just credit to them to continue
to stay in there and get after it all night long.

Well and being ready to because in all off season, coach,
he's the third string quarterback. You don't get a lot
of rips at seven on seven's at all these camps
preparing for this season. I know he prepares, but boy,
he had to grow up quickly this year, didn't he.
