Speaker 1 (00:00):
There is your Ariana Grande right now this Wednesday morning
on one O two point seven. It's Kiss FM, Los Angeles.
So LA the home of the Olympics and the Paralympics
coming up in twenty twenty eight, and the Paralympic Games
are in Paris right now. It's a big story. Actually
this is a local story coming out of the west
side of LA. Have you guys seen Ezra freck Ezra

(00:23):
frec as Ye, So he's from right here in LA.
He just won gold in the one hundred meter and
the high jump. He set a new high jump Paralympic record.
But the thing is he manifested it. He put it
out there. He basically said on social media one hundred
days from now, I'm going to win the gold. Nice.

(00:44):
He threw it out there with swagger, and he did,
and he won on day ninety nine. But he was
born without most of his left leg and that has
not slowed him down. He's here with us this morning,
right now, and I gotta tell you, Ezra, it's super
nice to meet you. Thank you for coming on, my friend, thank.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
You for having me. Very excited to be here.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
I gotta tell you you got swagger, bro. You got
some innate swagger about you, man that we love.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
I appreciate it coming from you. I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
Hey, congratulations just winning golden one hundred meter and the
high jump setting a new record? That is massive. What
goes through your body now when.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
You hear that? Pretty crazy? Honestly, still thinking in you know,
there's definitely a phase of processing before I realized that
this is actually real life. I definitely was going to
bed a few units in a row, pinching myself, saying, please,
let this not just be a dream.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
But you did something which manifested that, and you just
said it. You said it matter of factly. You plan
to run the one hundred meters and you plan to do
all this in one hundred days and win the gold.
Do you think that in in a way really helped
you get there?

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Absolutely? Absolutely. I think in order to accomplish anything great,
you must believe that you're capable of it first. And
so for me, when I was saying I'm going to
win Paralympic gold day whatever out of one hundred until
I win Paralympic gold, that was me just convincing myself
that I was capable of it. Convincing myself that I
was the type of guy to go out there and
win Paralympic gold and sure if it.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
Worked out, And then he won the second gold in
less than twenty four hours.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
The first gold was a surprise goal. The second one
was what I was anticipating. So it was definitely tough.
You know, win a gold and then have to refocus
and say, all right, I gotta forget that I got
to compete tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
It's true. I mean, the freck who has just competed
at the Paralympics won a couple of golds. It's true.
You almost have to be so we have to be
so strong anyway to mentally prepare for this, but to
compartmentalize and put that glory behind you to focus on
doing it again must have been very intense.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Absolutely, it was so hard. I was laying in bed
at twelve am, thinking I have to put the phone down,
turn the phone on, do not disturb, not reply to
every message, not watch the video over and over again.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
Right out of West La here in Los Angeles, our hometown. Guy,
I wanted to give you a second to you know,
I'm a big believer in philanthropy. I have a foundation
that builds studios, media centers, and pediatric hospitals around the country.
And I know that you've got a big focus on
philanthropy too. Tell me about your foundation. Absolutely.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah. I have a nonprofit, Angel City Sports and we
do adaptive sports for people with physical disabilities here in
Los Angeles, California. So anyone with the physical disability sports training, equipment,
competitive opportunities. There's a lot of barrier to entry for
this community. People don't realize. I mean, running blades are
fifteen thousand dollars. Racing wheelchairs, basketball wheelchairs so expensive, and

(03:36):
our goal is to break it all down and give
this community access to sport.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
It's really amazing. And how what's your mindset when you're
achieving these unbelievable things? What's it like? Every day?

Speaker 2 (03:48):
We had seventy plus family and friends that came all
the way out there to Paris, and a huge contingent
that was out there in the crowd supporting me. So
I felt the love and I thought, Man, if all
these people are coming halfway across the world for me,
let me give them a good memory. I gotta deliver.

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Ez refrec right out of Los Angeles, making us proud
as a country and getting worldwide headlines. Nice to meet you,
my friend continued success, enjoy the gold.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Absolutely, Thank you guys very much. What a cool dude.
Huh yeah, he's literally the coolest

Speaker 1 (04:22):
And he's got that swacker and just started his freshman
year at USC.

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
