(00:23):
Robolis is here. I'm Adrian Denny. In just a few minutes for her
to introduce you to my new cohost here on the podcast, who was
at the rookie face off in Vegaswith the guys over the weekend. He's
got some interviews you caught up withroad Owners head coach Steve Popman, Montana
Anya Bucci, who he was withthe last couple of years with the San
Jose Barracuda. They have both migratedto the Desert, and Jonathan has the
(00:49):
first interview with Montana coming up.In just a few minutes. Kim and
I have part one of our conversationwith Colin Tyson that we're gonna get to
Kim. Colin signing today with theRoadrunners, coming back for his second full
pro season out of Arizona State. We told you we're gonna give you some
more desert flare this week on thepodcast. Kim and it was it was
(01:11):
a tease to uh Colin Tyson, who were excited to talk to here on
today's podcast. Yeah, he can'tstay away from Tucson. I guess just
or Arizona. You know, fromfrom Tempe to Tucson. He's making some
good, good life choices. Ithink. Yes, we've got Colin coming
up with the program. We've gotto help Kim pack for Wichita. Kim
(01:34):
is going to Wichita to watch theCoyotes take on the Saint Louis Blues.
We've confirmed it's the Saint Louis Blues. Kim. It's yeah, okay,
good, Yeah, they're playing theSaint Louis Blues. So we've got that
for your for your script as youhandle the public address announcing at the Intrust
Bank Arena in Whichita on Saturday nightas the Kyatis take on the Saint Louis
(01:56):
Blues. We've got a busy podcastto get to, Kim. Do you
want to start us off here withwith some Colin Tyson? So I after
we talked to Colin and we wehad a little short discussion about Halloween,
and we also talked about music inretrospect. I didn't say much when he
said when you guys were talking aboutnot going to concerts really and not,
that's not your thing, and Iunderstand that, but it sounds to me
(02:19):
like Colin really isn't into music, and that's something that my heart can't handle.
I love music. I have iton all the time. So in
the interview, like you just hearme go huh yeah, because we hear
it. I don't think my braincould handle. I've never talked to somebody
who's I'm not into it. It'slike when you're telling somebody something and they
smile and nod and you can tellthere it looks like they've just stuffed a
(02:44):
lemon into their mouth. The wheelsin my brain were turning, and apparently
we're still turning afterwards. Yeah,we get we get a lot of that
from Kim. Let's get to thelatest right now. Colin Tyson joining us
on the podcast Everybody you Can Cutthe Tension with a knife. Excited to
be joined now by Colin Tyson.Resigning with the Roadrunners second full season,
(03:07):
third season overall, third season herein the Desert after playing for Arizona State
in twenty one twenty two as well. Colin, how's it going today?
It's going great. Just got doneskating, as I told Kim when you
were doing those the mic stuff. But it's it's it's good. Been great
over here. Have been a goodsummer, a lot of house and everything.
(03:27):
So nothing to complain about you backin Michigan. Yeah, yes,
I am. It's your first summerafter the wedding, so I imagine a
good summer for you. You know, the wedding summer is always always a
lot going on. Yeah, forsure. I mean a little bit less
busy in places to go and stuff. But like I said, it just
about a house. We got gota bunch of work done on that and
(03:49):
try to do most of it myselfto help with some family members and stuff.
So still a little bit busy ofa summer, but it's been good,
Kim. You know, we welove our food here. But I'm
a big HGTV guy too. Ilove house Hunters and Fixer Upper and and
all the stuff that goes on theircall and tell us about the new house
(04:10):
and what you guys have been upto there. Yeah, So I mean
right when we moved in. Ithink our first night there was July ten,
but we did did some work before. But the first project was refinishing
the hardwood floor, so that tookme about I don't know, thirty thirty
forty hours of work on that andall that, and then redid our kitchen,
most bathrooms and there's a bunch offloor rings on other parts of the
(04:33):
house. So it's looking good now. So I've got a lot more projects
to go, but that's that's fornext summer. Tell us about the house
hunting, Uh did did you?Did you look at a lot of houses?
Did you walk into this one?No? It was the one.
What was the process like? Andjust tell us what what attracted you guys
to the to the first home?Yeah, for sure, I mean right
(04:55):
now is obviously kind of kind ofa tough market for buyers with the interest
rate shoe up, and we puta couple of offers down in our hometown
and none of them really hit.And then we we were fortunate enough to
know someone that wanted to sell theirhouse off market, so we went and
saw it. I shouldn't say wewent and saw it. Our parents went
and saw it. And we werestill in Arizona, and we got a
(05:15):
little tour on FaceTime of it andwe liked it. So we just wanted
to oks and gratulations. That's awesome, right, I remember, kim my
first My first place I bought wastwo thousand and seven, and it was
interest rates were basically like they arenow, and but it was time to
buy the house and bought it andthen interest rates went down, refinanced it
(05:43):
off off and running. But yougotta buy. You gotta buy when you're
ready and get going. Absolutely callit is your house. I had to
google where you're from in Michigan.I'm Monroe, Michigan. It's kind of
an interesting spot because you got southof Detroit, just north Toledo across the
lake from Cleveland, and also Hamiltonand what is it Toronto are really close
(06:09):
to you. So did are youstill in that Monroe area? Yep,
we're we're gonna We're looking at somehouses just north, like forty fifty minutes
north of Monroe, but we wantedto go somewhere close. All of our
family members still live them in Row, so when we're gone, it's,
you know, easy for them tocheck up on the house and kind of
make it easier on them. Yeah. I mean, obviously, when you're
(06:31):
home in the summer, you wantto be near your friends and family.
And that's where my wife and Iboth grew up. So we're around our
family and friends and maybe use aninvestment property down the road, but we
thought that that place is the bestfit. Yeah, so we we talked
about the summer. It just soundslike all all new house stuff, anything
anything funny. Any weekend getaways.Ah, Yeah, we went to North
(06:53):
Carolina Sunset Beach. My mom hasa place down there, so we went
there for about a half a week, so that was pretty fun. And
then a lot of golf, that'sfor sure. You gotta stay on top
of that for when you come backto Arizona. Absolutely. I was gonna
ask. Actually, So, Iwas looking at your wife's Instagram account last
(07:14):
night and she posted a picture withsome Taylor Swift music playing over it.
So I'm assuming that she's a Swiftye, And I was wondering if you
guys had gone to the Aras tourat all over the timmer Uh No,
we did not. She I don't. I don't really know if she listens
to our music that much. Honestly, I wouldn't call her a swifty but
she she does like her music,I think, But no, we did
(07:35):
not go to that. I'm nota big concert person. She goes to
the concerts with her friends and family, But you won't see me at a
concert. Wait, why is that? Do you not enjoy life music?
Not? Really? No, Likethere's a lot of people there. I
can listen to music in my car, but I'm generally not a big music
person. I mean, I don'tlike to go to concerts. I mean
(07:57):
I like music, I don't liketo go to concerts. It's just kind
of it's just kind of not mything. Like I like to sit down
and relax, and and if you'reon the floor, you're standing up.
You're not relaxing. And if youare sitting down, people in front of
you're standing up, and what areyou supposed to do with your hands?
And I it's just just not mything. Also, if there was less
people and like a lazy boy,but maybe you'd be into it. But
(08:18):
there's just too many people and it'snot comfortable for me. Like if we're
going over to the opera house andwe're gonna sit back, relax and enjoy,
I'm in but just it's pretty chaoticat a concert. I think it's
stresses me out. It's just notenjoyable. I'm like, can we get
to the encore because there's gonna bean encore? Because then when that's done
(08:39):
we can go home. Now I'mon near side here. Well wait,
so Collin, do you have atype of music that you do or don't
like or is it just the liveconcerts that you're not into? Oh?
I mean I'll listen to like rapand whatever the boys put on. Sometimes
he am a song Like if youask me, like what my favorite song
is right now, I don't reallyremember song titles or anything. So someone
(09:01):
who have to play it for me? That's interesting. Okay, So another
question about what you've been doing thissummer. Did you guys have a chance
to go see the two Big Barbieor Oppenheimer movies over the summer? We
did not. I wanted to gosee Oppenheimer but never got a chance too.
So I'll probably just wait until thatcomes out streaming and just watch it
for my TV. But I don'treally care to see Barbie, but I'd
(09:26):
love to love to see the Oppenheimermovie. Is Silly and Murphy is one
of my favorite actors because he wasa wider So yeah, I really want
to watch that. Yeah, Adrian, did you end up getting a chance
to see Oppenheimer or No? No, I didn't see Oppenheimer and my niece
has already seen Barbie, so OppenheimerI guess is uh. I'll just wait
to wait till it comes out onstreaming and get Collins password. That's right.
(09:50):
That is definitely because of the bigexplosions, And I mean I recommend
seeing it in the theater if you'reable, because it's very, very cinematically
p the movie, which probably itprobably doesn't translate as well to a smaller
screen, but it was a veryvery interesting movie. Colin, any any
(10:11):
Roadrunners you've seen this offseason or beenin contact with get ready to come back
since we last saw saw Everybody inApril. Yeah, I've talked to quite
a few of them. Obviously, don't ever playing with him, but Smitty
and I had had a camp herein Michigan, so I was with him
for a week so that was prettyfun. Other than that, didn't see
(10:31):
anyone in person, but I've beentalking to a lot of them. What
are you looking forward to the mostcoming back for year number three in Arizona
and your second full year with theRoadrunners. Yeah, I think just being
with the guys, and then theweather's obviously nice. My wife and I
love it just walking the dog andit's sunny every day. Yeah, just
(10:52):
being with the guys, starting toplay games again. I love love playing
hockey games obviously, and just beingon Arizona another year. I know you
guys do a lot of training inthe summertime, do you. I'm just
curious, do you guys like hirea trainer specifically to help you with like
one aspect of your game or isit kind of like just I need to
(11:13):
stay healthy and in shape during thistime and you kind of take that on
yourself or what does that look likefor you? How are you strategizing that?
Yeah, I mean a lot ofthe guys do different things. I
mean some guys work with a skatingcoach. A lot of people of trainers
were off the ice stuff for strengthand training and all that. But yeah,
(11:35):
I mean I have we have skatingcoaches here that I work with mostly
in the beginning of the summer, just to you know, familiarize myself with
the drills that that they want meto work on and stuff with my edges,
and then I continue working on thatwith my other group that I skate
with. We skate two to threetimes a week here starting in July,
so just us, we'll do likeskills drills first, a little bit of
(11:58):
conditioning, and then obviously everyone playslike the three and three small area and
tight games to get ready for theseason coming too, and so stuff like
that. A lot of the guysare different, like I said, so
some people might have trainers throughout thewhole summer and all that, but we
have a good group of guys downhere that train and they're all broad broad
players. So it's it's been fun. And when do you when you start
(12:22):
making the truck back down to Arizona. Yeah, so I'm actually flying out
Monday the eighteenth, right before maincamp starts. Awesome. I was gonna
ask, what's the what's the processof coming out do you? You?
You? And lots of drive andis are an animal and what's it looked
like? But just just hopping ona flight. Yeah, So we'll probably
load up our car whatever we canfit in there, and then we'll shift
(12:43):
the car and we're both flying onto tell us about tell us about the
dog. We gotta know about theanimal that's coming along. Yeah, is
it? Is it a Bernard doodle? Her name is Norris is a bird
of doodle. We got her myyear I played at ASU. We actually
got her at Mazo. So she'san Arizona pop. She's she's almost two
years old. She turns to inDecember and she's still crazy. So she's
(13:07):
a lot of fun. That's awesome, So, Adrian, I was guessing
because my dog, my friend hasa dog who looks very similar to their
dog. Just seeing the dog onInstagram looks exactly the same as my friend's
dog. Yep, that's all sheis. Kim's not creepy at all with
all the Instagram looking Colin. It'sit's just we're normal people. There's nothing,
nothing to worry about. What yougot next, Kim, Well,
(13:30):
it was an Instagram related question actually, but now I'm feeling super creepy about
it. Don't so creepy. We'renot creepy. So un creepy, Kim
that we needed to take a briefintermission with Colin, and we will have
part two of our conversation with himcoming up next week, where you'll talk
to him about the Halloween, We'llask him our fun questions and uh,
(13:52):
we'll get ready for for fan Fest. So final interview of the of the
off season as a as a twoparter with with Colin Tyson and announced by
the Roadrunners today is signing a oneyear contract joining US out at Arizona State.
Him and Josh done wearing uh wearingseas at respective points. Josh was
(14:15):
in the captain s over the weekendin Vegas. Did you see that Kim
No? I didn't? Oh mygosh? And Colin the Arizona State captain.
So the two ASU guys back lockedup. Josh gonna start year one
of a three year entry level contractwith the Coyotes this year, and Colin
back for full season number two andseason number three with the Roadrunners after joining
(14:39):
US out of Arizona State. Butbut we like Colin, he's a he's
an easy guy. I feel likeUh, I feel like Colin and uh
and Alexa you could, you know, go out to dinner with have a
nice time. Colin and I wouldgo to the driving range and you and
Alexa could go to a concert afterKim. Yeah, well, I don't
know, maybe she is not intolive music either, but yeah, I
(15:01):
feel like definitely there that they seemlike such a cute couple and like very
friendly and the new house, Holycow. Talk about what are they going
to do next summer? Kim,like wedding last summer, house this summer.
Gosh, you had the wedding lastsummer this summer because you relax and
went straight into the to the houseand uh in in row nice nice vacation
(15:22):
and in North Carolina. Sounded like, so Colin making his way back to
Arizona today as we record the podcasthere on Monday, so hopping on the
flight, the car is uh onthe on the truck being shipped back.
You could they do these a numberof ways, Kim, and I actually
just found this out in the lastweek. Okay, you can pay it
(15:45):
get your car shipped, yes,but there's two options. They can pop
it on a truck and then itdrives down, drives down the highway and
you drive by a truck with abunch of cars on it and you're like,
I wonder where these cars are going. Or they can have somebody physically
drive it yep for you. Sowe gotta we gotta find out if if,
what do you get? I know, it just depends on the company.
(16:07):
I think, no, no,no, I mean what do you
think he would choose? Like,I would definitely choose to put it on
a truck. I wouldn't want toput mileage on it if I didn't need
to, you know. Yeah, but that's kind of that's kind of the
thing. I bet it's cheaper ifyou have a driver drive it. I
don't know putting all the mileage onit, but then that seems kind of
scary. I mean, somebody youdon't know is going to be driving your
car and I don't know. Thatjust seems Yeah, I'd prefer to put
(16:30):
it on the truck. Will justhave to Well, we'll ask Colin if
he was at the delivery when thecar arrived into the desert or how that
that went. Did you see youmay see Colin in Wichita. You might
be able to ask him. KimCoyotes announcing their training camp roster. So
(16:52):
we've got some guys that we knownot only on entry level deals, on
two way deals, you know,on one way NHL deals. Mike Carcony
that that we know that are thatare on this uh, Katy's training camp
roster and Colin Tyson is uh isone of them. You could see him
in in Wichita coming up over theweekend, Kim, when when you and
(17:18):
Dusty are there. I'm trying tofind it here and I'm scrolling through the
emails. I'm optimistic that it's goingto pop up here. And I thought
I had seen somewhere that Microconi isgoing to Australia with that. Yeah,
he's in the Australia group that he'stweeted all he put on his Instagram story
that he is in. Uh,he's in Australia right now. That's amazing.
(17:44):
Yeah, yeah, good for him. So so Mike's there. Yeah,
the the Australia contingent got there yesterdayand the Wichita contingent. I think
it's going to get their Saturday forthe game. Kim. Wait, fly
in and and and play play thegame. Yeah, are you in the
You're You're flying in Dave game onSaturday? Right? I am. And
(18:07):
I'm a little bit nervous, onlybecause I'm flying through Denver. It's not
a direct and I don't know aboutyou guys, but I am knocking on
wood. I've never flown through Denverwhere things haven't gotten slightly delayed. So
I'm hopeful that everything is good. But I hear you though, yeah,
nothing nothing really an airline travel forthe last two years is it's gone smooth
(18:30):
as an in the year. Allright, So I've got the h got
the Cayotes training camp roster here foryou. Kim Ok Kim Karate's on it,
JJ Moser Montana, Anya Bucci, who we're gonna hear from coming up
signing that two year entry level dealwith the Coyotes. Say, Victor Shoulderstrom,
I call you Chonic Uh. Campersigned that two adeo in June with
(18:53):
the Coyotes. Michael Castle Ring Uh, Josh Done. Michael Lombardi, who
was up at the rookie faceoff. He's on the Caddy's training camp roster.
Mike A. Miller Hunter Drew whowe had on a couple of weeks ago.
Cameron Heebig signed to a tryout bythe by the Coyotes. Lawson Krause,
old time roadrunner from seventeen eighteen.Mattias mitchelly old favorite. Ben McCartney's
(19:17):
on the training camp roster. MikeErconi on the roster in Australia, Colin
Tyson who we've got. He's ona tryout with the Cowties. We Satel,
he's on a tryout with the Cooties. Brian McGregor, Curtis Douglas,
he looks Kellaman on that two waycontract. Nathan Smith. This is a
it's a big training camp roster Kimforty three forwards, twenty three defenseman h
(19:45):
eight goalies. Because they're playing threegames on Saturday. They're playing one in
Australia, one with you and Dustyin Wichita, and one in h Saint
Louis, Missouri. Right, I'mreally interested to see who's who ends up
where other than Australia, because I'veseen at Yeah, the guy's going to
Australia. Microcony, Logan Cooley whowas at the Rooky showcase loss in Krause
(20:06):
doing Gunther who was there too,Barrett Hayton, Matthias Mitchelly, J J.
Moser, Vitor Soderstrom. Those arethe Those are Australia guys. So
you could see any number of theguys that I listed before there. For
you, Kim in Wichita, Kansas. You getting excited to go to Whitchta.
I am excited, yes, definitely. And I'm excited to see who's
(20:27):
going to be there too and whatthat's gonna look like. All right,
see there for a whole whole day. Right, You fly in Saturday,
game, Saturday, leave Sunday.Right, I think it's literally like twenty
four hours. Yeah, are youchecking a suitcase? Yeah? If I
tell you my answer, you're goingto give me a hard time about it.
But I've I've I've been strategizing.I think I'm going to check a
(20:48):
suitcase only because Dusty will check asuitcase. And if Dusty wasn't checking a
suitcase, then I wouldn't. Butsince I'm going to have to wait at
baggage claim anyway, then I mightas well just check a suitcase, right,
Yeah, Yeah, for all theshopping you're going to be doing in
Wichita on Saturday, so you haveenough. Yeah, so you don't have
(21:11):
to, so you don't have tobe that person that goes bananas shopping at
the mall on a trip to Wichitaand has to stop by the suitcase shop
at the mall and buy a suitcaseto bring back. I had to do
that in London. And I lovehow I love how you're blaming Dusty that
you don't know, not blaming strategizing, because because if Dusty wasn't bringing us
(21:33):
a check on suitcase, which Iknow will have to happen, then I
would be then I would definitely travelmore lightly, so we could just get
out of the airport right and andfigure things out. But if Dusty has
to wait for a suitcase, thenKim will be waiting anyway, So Kim
should just pack it. Could goget a Cinnabon or a Chick fil A
(21:55):
or a Starbucks while Dusty's waiting.Well, no, because then Kim's gonna
for her luggage. So Kim,Yeah, it's right. I think I'm
checking. I see. I knewyou were gonna judge. I knew you
were gonna judge. We can't alltravel as lightly as you do. Yeah,
when I have more than When Ihave more than just the backpack,
(22:15):
I have to remember to go upinto the overhead and grab the second thing
or all forget it. The overheadis high for me. It's really hard
for me to reach the overhead.I hate putting stuff up there because I
can never reach it. I haveto and I can never see in there,
so I have to literally blindly searchwith my arms to find my stuff.
So not a fun all right,Kim. I've got an airplane story
(22:36):
for you. Actually on a flightgoing to Denver which didn't go smooth,
okay, all right, over theweekend, flying into Denver, right personal
personal, flying on pleasure, Isaid, I guess they say, all
right, so I guess thunderstorms, lightning, blah blah blah, there's a
ground stop in Denver. All theflights are late, are flighting Tucson boards.
(22:57):
They get us all on and thenthe usual, Oh, by the
way, we just got a messagefrom Denver there's a ground stop. We
can't take off. So you know, everybody gets all nervous, everybody freaks
out. The freak out crowd walkedoff right, and the rest of us
were just cool people funding the sunfrom Tucson. We stayed on the flight
(23:18):
because they said, just stay onthe flight. We're gonna push back as
soon as we can. We're gonnaget out of here, all right.
So so the woman in the middlesitting next to me was was a freak
outer, right, but she didn'tget off with all the freak outers.
Okay, she got off like twentyfive minutes later, because that's when she
freaked out. She spent the firsttwenty five minutes complaining and whining, and
(23:41):
then you know, gets off.She had she processed it, and I
eventually talked her into getting off theplane so I could have the middle seat.
I didn't do that. I didn'tlook over. I did not look
over. I was working on rookieface off stuff. Did you have your
headphones on? And I did,of course. Yeah. I was a
blasting music, Kim, because Ilove music. So listening to music,
(24:04):
I'm doing some computer work that thegirl next to me is entertaining the freak
outer and the center seats. Soshe ultimately gets off the plane. Okay,
okay, all right, so here'swhere it gets good. So then
we start to get ready. We'regetting ready to take off. They're like
put your trade tables up and seatsand they're upright locked on position, and
your air bags of flotation device oryour chairs of flotation device, and blah
(24:27):
blah blah, and then here comesthe freaker outer back onto the plane.
All right. Yeah, Well, she's smarter than all of us. She
has found a way to get afive am flight out of Phoenix. So
as soon as she grabs her suitcaseoff of the plane. She'll be on
(24:48):
her way and we're gonna take offfor Denver. All right, So the
lady grabs her suitcase from the overheadlocks off the plane. Huh do you
do you see something here that almosthappened that would have gone really really south
for her, Kim. Well,if she had grabbed the wrong bag,
(25:11):
well take it a step further orstep backwards, Kim. She freaked out,
she got off the plane. Sheforgot her suitcase. Oh okay,
she walked off the plane without hersuitcase and fortunately remembered. Right as we
were getting all the business taken careof to take off, I looked over
at the girl who was entertaining herwhile I was doing rookie face off work,
and I said, she forgot hersuitcase and we almost took it to
(25:36):
Denver. And the girl says,I know, I know, I know.
Oh my god, Holy go howabout that? Oh my god?
I love that her name is nowFreaker Outer. She's a Freaker Outer.
Yeah, hopefully she made it toIowa City, dur attend your reunion,
and you guys were good to go. We took off, took off,
(25:57):
went to Denver, and got Yeah, I lived happily ever after. M.
See, that would be me too, because I so rarely rarely carried
on the aircraft. Oh, I'vegotten A couple of months ago, I
was, I was. I hada funeral that I went to. I
get off, and then I wantto ditch the carry on soup bag as
soon as I can, so Iput it in the closet right at the
(26:18):
front of the plane. Yep.I just wandered off without it, and
YE wandered back on right Nobody, nobody saw that I was trying to get
back on the plane because it wasright at the front there. Just just
grab my little mister Mac soup bagand walked off. M yep. See,
I know myself well enough to knowthat I can't I can't believe.
I can't believe I haven't left theradio gear either in a gate or in
(26:41):
the overhead or knock on wood.Yeah, don't don't let me ever do
that. Jonathan Jonathan Schaeffer is mynewest co host on this Insider podcast,
Kim and I rover back to roadRunners Happy Hour starting on Tuesday, October
three, five to six. BrettFerris from The Arizona Daily start I'll be
with us Ober on Fox Sports fourteenfifty am and at that point Jonathan Shaffer
(27:04):
will step in and join me asmy new co host here on our Insider
podcast. First official start date,Kim, Sunday October first. Is that
like meteor meteorological fall or something thatwe're starting the date on here, like
it's tax purposes Sunday October for something? Does that signify anything? But anyway,
(27:25):
they've told us Jonathan start date onthe podcast is Sunday, October one,
But that didn't stop him from fromworking over the weekend up at the
Rookie Face Off in Las Vegas andtalking to our guys and meeting Steve Popman.
Jonathan, welcome to your podcast, buddy. This is it. That's
what we're doing here. How doesit sound so far? Oh man,
(27:45):
it's great. I've heard so muchalready. And to go back to you
know, saying that you've almost leftgear or you don't want to leave gear.
Nick Nolenberger, the Barracuda broadcaster,he left at his gear on the
bus that took them to their arena, and he was freaking out for about
(28:06):
an hour figuring out where to getthe bus driver to come back, and
he didn't realize he was c seedon an email that gave him the bus
driver's phone number, and he guysgearing like five minutes. Just a little
funny side story for you, wasthat this past weekend advance? It was
this last weekend? Yeah, ohyeah, And the Henderson Arena is about
(28:26):
thirty minutes from the team's hotel, whereas the practice arena where the other games
were at with his like a tenminute drive, so he was at the
further one in Henderson for the Sharksand night's game. And yeah, that
was a that was funny. Youknow, to leave your gear on the
bus is just something you don't wantto do. It's funny because it wasn't
(28:48):
you Like how big you're smiling andlaughing right now? Is ye want to
be smiling at all? That's probablyprobably tell the story if it was me,
probably because he's going from that playby play announcer in San Jose to
this one in Tucson, and he'slike, jeez, some thing's never change,
same script, different characters. Yeah, just just a little funny side
(29:11):
story to get us going. Yeah, that's that's a surprise. It doesn't
happen more. Often to right,Yeah with you, all right, Jonathan,
you're back from the rookie faceoff inVegas. You gotta watch our Arizona
Coyotes going at it on Saturday. And after the game, you went down
to the locker room, talk tothe guys, tell us about it,
(29:32):
what you see, How was thegame, and initial thoughts on your on
your first game as a as aroadrunner in a Coyote. Yeah, the
game was great. Lots of penalties, which I guess you can expect with
a bunch of rookies out there. It was. It was just a back
and forth game. I think everygoal was a power play goal, including
(29:52):
a five on three, so thatwas a bit interesting there. And after
the game, I got to talkto coach Steve Poffin, and I've never
been welcome to open arms like everto anyone like Steve. I even got.
I almost forgot to click record whenwe started talking because it was just
felt like a regular conversation. Andyeah, I just talked about the game
(30:14):
a little bit and I asked himjust what's it gonna take to become a
roadrunner and you mentioned that, well, we won't put you on the ice
if that's when I was referring to, which you know, hopefully I will
never have to go out there, you know, if we needed some reserve
players. But yeah, it wasgreat, and it was just a really
fun weekend. And I was gladit was in Vegas for my first time
(30:36):
because I know it's it rotates everyyear for a different team each time.
And got to check out Henderson's arenaas well, and you know, beautiful
new arena, and yeah, itwas great. Let's hear from see Popman
right now. Jonathan cut up withhim after the game on Saturday night.
Yeah, what'd you think of itout there? You know, lots of
penalties, so you know, I'msure that was a little tough, but
you know, you guys really tookadvantage of the man after opportunities you are
(31:00):
given. Yeah, absolutely, youknow what I thought, our guys battled
through a lot of adversity or year. When you take penalties like that early
on, you know, sometimes youdon't realize how much some of the guys
are sitting around and it just takesaway to flow the game. So to
go through that that mental period wherethey're not playing, it's it's difficult than
(31:21):
players. And so I thought we'reresponding really well. It was great to
see the guys kill the penalties andthen I like that our bench responded and
you know, they kept the paceup and they were able to pull things
down. They when we got backto five months time now, some people
like to call the rookie face offand the unofficial start to the season,
and just how is it to getback there on the ice with the guys.
(31:42):
Well, it's great, you knowwhen when you get the opportunity this
early in the season to start, you know, building relationships and you know,
finding one little things that they theplayers do really well and the things
that they can improve on. Weget a real head start on and then
it just you know, obviously it'sa little it just sets us up for
(32:02):
a good start. And you know, being in Tucson, you're used to
coaching you know, kids and veterans, but now this time it's just mainly
kids who don't have a lot ofpro experience. Of course, some guys
are expected to report to Tucson, but just what's it like getting all these
groups of kids together to go outthere and play some hockey. Yeah,
you know what, it's it's funny. But when they're playing against other kids.
They're they're really some of these guysare are veterans and the leagues that
(32:27):
they're coming from, you know,so both teams are are fighting for for
the same ice and they're playing onagainst the same odds, and so you
know what it's it's a it's agood feeling for some of our our draft
picks to to be able to comein and you know, they're they're they're
we're trying to bread some leadership hereand so like they get that opportunity to
do it, and you can seehow they they really relationship and look forward
(32:51):
for you know, for the opportunityto to leave, and it's fun for
them and the last one for you. For me, you know, I'm
coming from San Jose to Arizona. Now what's it going to take for me
to be a true roadrunner? Youknow? Didn't affimated. I don't know.
I don't know. That's a goodquestion. I like it. I
think we're I don't know, therecan't be too much of a sacrifice at
(33:12):
all, anybody to die or no, you know, I know we can't
you know, sacrifice or chicken oranything like that. But you know,
I think I don't know, Ithink we get a first win with you,
and then I think you're welcomed inright, yeah, perfect, it's
right. Maybe you put money onthe board when San Jose comes to town.
I think that might be a goodtwo right, yeah, let's get
some more. Yeah, exactly perfect, All right. Yes, Steve's a
great guy. I know what youmean. Jonathan, we'll go down and
(33:34):
we'll be chatting and it's like,Mike, do you want to do the
interview? Should we start this?Because we're just having such a such a
great time together. And then afterwards, like I gotta go broadcast a game.
Well, I gotta go coach thegame, all right, see you
after the game. Yeah. That'sa good guy to uh to have Azara
head coach. We love him,Kim, Yeah, we absolutely do.
(33:57):
And Jonathan, I'm curious the penalties. Were they like little tip tappy penalties
or were they like big penalties?Oh? Man, we had things like
hooking, slashing, tripping, nothingreally. There was a couple of roughing,
you know, a couple of laughterwhistle skirmishes. But yeah, just
and it was annoying too for mebecause my role during this tournament was I
(34:21):
was technical producing for Black dog hockey. So if you're watching the Arizona game
and you saw the penalties, thescoring graphics, that was all me.
And I was working with Arizona's broadcasterBob Heath, this super great guy.
Great to meet him as well. And from my role, I had to
type each penalty down and it washappening so quickly, and I'm not the
(34:44):
quickest typers, so it was ait was a it was a fun game
to do that. I feel likethat was the most work I've ever done
during a broadcast. Besides the broadcastingaspect of it was your brain like going
a million miles an hour as you'retrying to get it all down. Yeah,
and then and then you end uplike physically exhausted even though you haven't
moved yeah somewhere, or just Iguess mentally exhausting him. I even have
(35:07):
the lineup sheets with me right nowbecause we use these to type down the
names and it's just flip flopping itaround and yeah, just a lot of
work. Yeah, well thanks forgoing down. You went down, and
you got one of your your oldfriends from from San Jose two Montana on
Yabouci. We've got several former Barracudaand Sharks with the Kaddy's organization this year,
(35:30):
Montana one of them. But youknow him pretty well from the last
two seasons. Yeah, I thinkhe was a little a bit surprised when
I told him I was going toArizona. I think he's I think he
thought I was there with the Barracuda, and but yeah, just great talking
to him again and I'm glad he'sback there on the ice. You know,
he he had an injury last yearso he didn't get to really play
the whole season. But his firstyear and also my first year as well
(35:52):
with the Baracuta, he's just thekind of defender that really, I would
I say, he really helps thegoaltenders out. He doesn't take too many
chances, and he also likes tofight, and you know a lot of
people say like, well, youknow, he's just there to fight,
but he's also really just tough andgritty player. And I think he was
leading the league in fights two seasonsago, to the point where I think
(36:14):
if you get in ten fights orso, you get suspended for a game.
So he kind of just took thatsacrifice. But I think he's going
to be a really really fun playerfor the Arizona Coyotes. Yeah, Kim,
we we were looking at it.We had Hunter Drew on a couple
of weeks ago, got Curtis Douglascoming back to the county's organization. So
the Roadrunners. When you look atit, each of the past two seasons
(36:37):
in the h L, Hunter Drewhas been in the top five in penalty
minutes each of the last two years. This year Curtis Douglas was last year
Montana and your Bucci was and thenthis year he got hurt. So we
could have had three of the topfive if he didn't if he didn't get
hurt. There's some some prickly pricklycactus, Jonathan are we got we want
(36:57):
prickly cactus. So the rookies weredown there playing with an edge for for
Zach Startinian and Steve Poppan you couldyou could tell Han with all the THN
fractions, Yeah, they really were. But you know they're doing a tremendous
job on the penalty kill. Ithink LA only were able to score two
goals. They were what the Arizonawas up three to one, but the
(37:21):
LA scored a goal I L likegoal near the end to make it three
to two, and the goaltender AnsonThorton had a tremendous two saves at the
end. If you missed it,I think he stopped one with the pad
on his left side and then theother one with his blocker, and uh
but yeah, I just maybe theyplayed with a lot of edge. Connor
Geeky had two goals and I believeJosh Stone also had two goals for the
(37:42):
first game, so you know, the stars are doing what they were made
to do. And yeah, justit was really fun to just see Arizona
play for the first time. Wellme, Noia, Hey, you know,
I'm with Tucson now, and itwas fun. Josh Stone, a
couple of goals were in that CaptainSeed. Did you notice we're in that
Captain C there, Jonathan. Wehad Ben McCartney Kim wearing that the Captain
(38:05):
C last year at the Rookie Showcasein San Jose and this year Josh had
it on for the for the Saturdaynight. Yeah he did. Yeah,
that's uh. I think that wasjust the talk around a couple of the
guys and I just you know, noticing who was wearing captains that seasons.
Everything just on the teams, especiallywith the Baracud as well, because the
mainly the people is there with we'reall San Jose guys, so they were
(38:30):
mainly talking about that as well. But you know, it's fun to see
which rookies will step up into thatrole each game, and I believe Josh
Stone was definitely one of those guys. Anson Thornton playing in goal in all
three games in the Rookie Showcase forfor the Coyotes name to watch for their
six foot four goalie last year inthe Ontario Hockey League with Barry went twenty
(38:52):
nine, nine and five. Kim. We saw him some preseason action with
the Coyotes back in twenty twenty one, so it's it's a guy. I
mean, they're starting them all threegames the Rooky Showcase. We'll see what
is on tap for for Anson Thorntonthis year, obviously in an organization with
(39:12):
some good goaltending depth Krola, Melcha, Connor Ang Graham, Ivan prozataf Matt
Vilalta, and we'll see where AnsonThornton falls into that as well. Looking
at the lineups the rosters for theUH the Rooky Showcase, Logan Cooley,
Dylan Gunther played in in one gameon Friday, then they joined the rest
of the group in uh In inAustralia. But but Kim Josh Stone,
(39:37):
Connor Geeky is is Jonathan mentioned thefirst rounder out of out of the Winnipeg
Ice Organization and the Western Hockey League. He'll be in when Natchee Washington this
year that's where they played. Butbut first rounder by the Kenny's in twenty
twenty two. Aku Rodi is aor Aku Ratu. I should say,
uh, get that right, Kim, make sure you have that for for
(39:58):
Saturday and which it if he's uh, if he's there. But we saw
his brother play for Abbotts for thispast year. But fifth rounder by the
Katies in in twenty nineteen. Expecthim to be in the organization here in
North America out of out of Finland. Michael Lombardi who we signed last Monday.
(40:20):
There Riese Fatelli, Michael Miller whosigned the two year contract out of
Minnesota to luth last season. MaverickLamoru going back to Junior's but another first
rounder by the by the Coaties. But a couple of other names to watch
for there along with Montana Anya Bucci, who Jonathan also caught up with after
the game on Saturday night. Youknow, second game of the Rookie Showcase.
(40:43):
Just how are the Lakes feeling outthere? Feeling good? Yeah,
it's good. Good to get backinto it after a long offseason, right
after the injury, coming back,So it's good to get these rookie games
in. Yeah. And you know, going back with the injury, you
haven't played for a while. Nowyou're playing with a brand new team.
Just tell me what that problem sayshas been like. Yeah, it's just
it's a little different, right,There's new guys, new coaches get used
(41:05):
to. But all in all,it's been a it's I've enjoyed it.
It's been a great experience for me. And uh, yeah, I'm fun.
And when you were with San Josecoming to TUSA, you know what
did what things did you notice whileyou were playing the team that kind of
maje. Your decision comes signed withArizona as a whole. Yeah, that's
a tough one. That's just betweenme and my agent. We thought it'd
be a good opportunity to to goelsewhere, so it's pretty much it.
(41:30):
Yeah. And then the last onefor you know both of us going to
San Jose to Arizona. Just wouldwhat advice do you have for me when
I get acclimated and moved in aswell to Arizona. Yeah, oh,
drink a lot of water. Yeah, it's pretty hot. That's that's pretty
much it. Yeah, just stayhydrated, Jonathan, you should be,
should be okay, won't have toget out the first aid kid or anything.
(41:52):
There. Kim hates the heat.By the way, here comes a
rant on how how much? YeahI saw that, I saw the fingers.
You're ready to speaker, Go ahead, Kim. I'm not gonna ranch,
but I was gonna say, Jonathan, one thing that you desperately need
is a windshield cover for your Yeah, I need to buy one. I
haven't bought one yet, and Ishouldn't hand them out at the border when
(42:14):
you drive exactly. Yeah, it'sso necessary. I'm supposed to move in
less than a week. You know. It's Monday today, I'm moving.
I'm supposed to be moving on Saturday, and I'm even flying to San Jose
on Wednesday just to grab some stuffthat I have in storage. But one
thing I have not bought you asthe windshield covered. So you know.
I think first thing once I getto Tucson is just go to a store
(42:35):
and buy one, because I thinkwe have Roadrunners windshield Oh, I would
love a Roadrunners one. I thinkthat would be tremendous. Yeah, we'll
get you a windshield cover, Kim, I've never used one. I've never
used one of my way. Whyam I not as pat? Are you?
What? How can you not useone? Isn't your car nine million
degrees? When you get it warm, just crank on the AC and zoom
away, that's why. Yeah,No, that's been nanas And but my
(43:00):
interior is black and literally I havetwo You have leather sheets in your vehicle?
Okay, I'm sure not. No, it's not leather, it's cloth.
But I have a I have amanual transmission, and my gearshift is
black and so we're my gearshift andyeah, it hurts. I need I
need one of those, uh,one of the oven mits to dry ars.
(43:21):
Sometimes that's what we should give outto window screens. Oven mits.
Okay you can. I'm sure that'scheap enough. You can throw a road
Wunner's logo on on an oven mitz. So Jonathan getting ready to come to
the desert. You were here,uh a couple of weeks ago, able
to see the town, got somesome good local eating in your first visit
(43:42):
ever to Tucson. Be came, looked at a lot of places, looks
a lot of sides of town, ate a lot of food. Tell us
about your ship to UH to Tucsona couple of weeks ago. So you're
getting ready to make your way downhere from the Barracuda. Yeah, I
loved it, you know, itwas it was the whole drive there was
interesting. It's about six hour drivewhere I'm at right now, I'm not
technically in San Jose at the moment. I'm back in my hometown Riverside,
(44:07):
which it's also hot, by theway, so I guess I'm used to
that desert lifestyle. But yeah, the whole drive there was interesting. I
was just thinking to myself, like, what what do I even expect,
you know, just driving to abrand new city, because I've never really
been to Arizona that much. I'venever even been a Phoenix, so,
you know, I drove through Phoenixfor the first time ever. The only
(44:27):
time I've been to Arizona was youknow, maybe going to the river or
lake Havasu, But yeah, itwas awesome. I loved it. You
know, nice little college town, nothing too crazy. I don't really like
the big, big cities, youknow, sometimes it's just a little too
much for me. So I thinkit was, you know, size wise,
it was perfect. Didn't see Adrianthere he was out of town at
the time, unfortunately, but gotto meet a couple of the office members
(44:52):
that I'll be working with throughout thewhole season, and you know, just
got me really excited. All right, tell us about the food. Where
did you What did you eat?Oh? Man, I priority forgot the
names, but I went to asteakhouse. I think my second nights there,
one of the biggest Ribby's I've probablyever ordered in my life. And
(45:13):
it was like, was it atApplebee's? No, No, I wouldn't
go to Applebee's. I wouldn't goto Applebee's if I was visiting in town.
Man, I already forgot the names, but I think it was Pinnacle
Peak. Was Pinnacle, Yeah youwould know it because you recommended. Yeah,
I went to Pinnacle Peak. Ididn't know it was like this in
this little desert town thing ie thepark. So I was caught a little
(45:36):
bit off guard, but yeah,I had like this huge ribbi but it
was a great deal. Is theribi, a side of beans, a
salad, and some bread for likethirty ish bucks I think, and you
know, thirty dollars. Yeah, that's a lot for just myself eating.
But it gave me a lot offood. I'd even finished the whole thing.
I had to take it home andeat it the next day. But
yeah, that was awesome. Thatwas great, you know, great service
(45:58):
and everything. And I think theage and the other place you recommended to
me the Mexican food was Elcharo.Yeah, yeah, that was when I
walked around downtown. It was stillreally hot, so obviously of course I
had a water with me to makesure I was hydrated, but I just
wanted to walk around town, youknow, just to check it out.
And yeah, I went to ElCarro and it was it was a really
(46:21):
good guy. I think I boughta what did I get, oh,
shrimp fahitas. Yeah, I hadthe shrimp pahitas and it was really good
as well. So I'm excited forthe food and you know, that was
the that was a plus. Andthen the Bisbee Breakfast Club for yeah,
yeah that was my Yeah, thatwas quick. I just got some biscuits
and gravy. I had a lotof time to kill before I started touring
(46:42):
some apartments. So I guess thosewere the three places that I went to
in my time in Tucson. Ialso was visited a coffee shop that was
also Everything was just good, youknow, not disappointed with the food and
you know, talked to got tomeet some people and you know, everyone
just seemed really nice. That mysterywas great and I loved it. Adrian,
I feel like we need to puttogether like some sort of punch card
(47:04):
for people need to Tucson of allthe places that they need to go.
Yeah, like like a hundred placesthat you need to hit. Adrian do
that because he recommended so much forme. Well, you know, I
was just texting him all this year. It is like where do I go
right now? You know? Yeah, limitless options. Yeah, that's you're
on the case, Kim, punchcard. Get us the get us the
list. We'll get it. Getits on, all right, Yeah,
(47:28):
let's do it. So, Yeah, we're excited to have have Jonathan joining
us here on the podcast and ataste over the weekend that the Rookie showcase.
But yeah, you gotta see onyour boucchi. But I think there
might be another guy or two thatwalks off the ice in either Arizona that
the caddies are in Tucson and seesyou for the first time, is like,
(47:51):
wait a minute, did you signas a free agent here too?
Yeah? Yeah, but I was. I was curious to see how many
of the former Kuda as well, you know, recognize me. But because
you know, I wouldn't just Iwouldn't, you know, I would make
small talk with the guys, butobviously, you know, you keep it
professional as much as possible. ButI was in that locker room after every
(48:12):
single game, so they have torecognize the face at least. Yeah,
you were out of the post gameasking the questions. Yeah, yeah,
always. I even got to catchup with jamac at the tournament as well.
The Barracuda head coach John McCarthy. He recognized me because you know,
I asked him for every single game. But now it was great catching up
with him as well. Unfortunately,he did call me a trader when I
(48:34):
told him that I was going toTucson again. He didn't know I was
leaving too. He thought I wasthere for the Barracuda and uh, you
know, I told him like,no, I'm going to Tucson, and
you know, he was, ofcourse, he was happy at the end.
But yeah, it's you know,it's it's going to be a little
bit of black bad blood. I'msure, you know, with you know,
former Baracuta staff members and players.I'm sure they'll just be bracking rights
now in the future when our teamsgo against each other. But yeah,
(48:58):
just I'm gonna miss it. YouEl San Jose was awesome. I went
to school there for four years aswell, just graduated and I had a
lot of opportunities there, but again, excited to move to Arizona and start
something new. Yeah, Sunday Actomberfirst, our first day on the on
the podcast, Kim, I thinkwe found a good guy. Huh.
I think he did a great job. Oh, thank you, thank you,
Jonathan. Appreciate you you joining ushere, buddy, anything anything else
(49:23):
we can help with, anything else, you're you're looking forward to coming down
to join the Roadrunners. Oh,I was just I'll just tell the fans,
you know, guys, I'm excitedto be working for you all,
and I hope my voice didn't annoyyou too much, you know, for
my start off. I'll have abetter mic next time too. I'm talking
literally from my laptop, which probablydoesn't sound the best. But once we
(49:45):
give myself up and running well,we'll sound a lot better. At least
I will I will sound a lotbetter. Sounds sounds crystal clear. Jonathan,
thanks for joining us. We appreciateit. Kim. We gotta get
you off to Wichita. But firstwe got to get to the items that
you've got on your your rundown forthe podcast today. Kim, what do
(50:05):

can get involved in as well withall proceeds going to UH Sickamorow Community Services.

for training camp, we're looking forwardto taking him over to reform A for
a modern Mexican lunch there and theywelcome to Tucson and we'll have your punch

(51:12):

that to look forward to. Sobig Hispanic Heritage Month celebration in store and
uh an ongoing yep. And onelast thing, one last thing, Former
(51:35):
roadrunner Ronald Nott and his wife welcometo baby number two into their lives over
the weekend. So I just wantedto say congrats to them because big gorgeous
big ron and Martina M yep, yeah, who are are back in Latvia?
Is that right? Am? Iright? I think it's I think
it's Czech Republice, I believe,so, I think that's that's the Eastern
(51:58):
Europe locale. But absolutely gorgeous littlebaby their second Yeah, and just the
most beautiful Instagram photo of Ronald holdingbaby number two from Prague. That's a
that's a major metropolis. He's fromPrague. Oh there we go, okay,
Yeah, have you ever been toAustralia, Kim all the all this
Australia talk with the Coyotes, goingdown there for the whole time, for
(52:22):
the whole week to play l Ain a couple of games. That's a
far flight. That's probably like sixmovies. So no, I did Japan,
and yeah, I think I'm I'mgood for far flights for now.
Have you haven't been right, I'venever been to Australia. No, it
was I would have gone. Yeah, I would have been asked, but
it didn't need my assistance. Soback here, back here, making sure
(52:45):
you would Dusty, get off toWichita for your game on Saturday. I'm
excited looking forward to it. Yeah, I know this sounds wonky, but
I'd rather be in Wichita than Australia. That's just so such a long flight,
so I'm happy. Yeah, itis, it is. It is
long, Like I mean, evena five or six hour flight is something
(53:07):
like you get on it and youget off of it, and it feels
like you've gone through a time warp. And and in fact, in their
case, I think they got thereand it was like it was it was
they got there a day later thanwhen they left. I think, right,
yeah, I think that's how itworks. I should know this because
the Grand Prix is there, andI think and I lived in Japan and
(53:30):
it was like plus nineteen, yeah, something like that. It's difficult.
Yeah, I want to say plusseventeen. So we've got we've got the
guys over at the Australia for theDesert for the down Under with the Desert
Dogs kimilby in Wichita on Saturday withDusty and we are just over a week
(53:55):
away from Rodiners fan fest and trainingcamp beginning on Sunday, October one,
two Sun Arena preseason game. Kaddy'swill be back with us Saturday October six,
three pm, taking on the Saturday, October seventh, taking on Anaheim
after our preseason opener on Friday Octobersix. It's the big news Colin Tyson
(54:17):
signing on Monday. Getting that outthere, and thanks for Colin for for
coming on the podcast. And we'llhave part two of that conversation coming up
next week Kim, fun questions andHalloween costumes and we'll just continue to do
you have a good time with withCollins. So looking forward to to part
two there definitely. All right,Kim, do you want to do our
(54:39):
download city of the of the weekhere? Yes? Yeah, I've been
thinking about that all right, Jonathan. Every week during the off season,
we do a random download city ofthe Week. I give Kim a couple
of options and she picks the thearea and we find a random city outside
(55:00):
of Arizona. That's a downloaded ourpodcast. So Kim, United States or
