Speaker 1 (00:00):
When you want more road Runners, We've got more road Runners.
This is the Tucson Roadrunners pay Insider Podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Opening weekend is over. We are back on a lazy Sunday.
On this week's edition the Tucson Roadrunners Insider Podcast, Jonathan
Schaeffer joined by Arizona Daily stars James Kelly and James Uh.
Just gonna start right off the top. Good weekend for
the Roadrunners. They got the split. You know, they lost
the first game three to one, but Saturday night's game

(00:32):
looked a lot better, winning four to two, and uh
just it took it took a little longer than usual,
but we saw the Roadruners what we're used to seeing,
and uh, overall, it's a good weekend. You'll take the
split against again a really good talented team like Colorado
and now start off at home this weekend. So just
your thoughts on the initial two games of the season
for the boys.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
Yeah, absolutely, it's a great It's a very good weekend
for the Runners. You you know, it's kind of close
to say like, oh, you know, it's tough to you know,
get two wins over a place like that, but it's
it's really good to rebound after tough n tough first game,
but have really strike back at the in the second game,

(01:13):
especially at the start, started off really strong and then
after one of the things that they had. One of
the big things I thought that to me that stood
out is that the power players did really well. And
that's something that you know, you kind of think that
usually at the ben of the season, it's not going
to be very strong, it's not going to be very
cohesive when you have new guys coming in and started
off strong.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
Had a good power play last night.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Yeah, the power play had a really really good weekend.
On the first night, Yeah the team would won for
seven uh back on on the Friday's three to one loss,
but it's still got a power play goal. You know,
you didn't go over seven. Uh. But then on the
second night going three for five. So and it's been
that main unit of Agazino and and Sokolof who both

(01:58):
had really good weekends, and Zo ending the weekend with
the goal and an assist. Same with Soclop as well
Akuatu getting two goals on Saturday. Meal os Kelm with
two assists two in LUTs in his first two games
in the North American Pro career, had two assists. On
the Saturday artum Duda with two points as well. So
h really starting to see the new guys uh step

(02:20):
up for the team. And yeah, we'll go more into
Friday night's game first, because James, that first period was
a bit tough for the Roadrunners. They were out shot
ten to four by Colorado, They had some power play chances,
they allowed a lot of turnovers on the power play,
and uh that second period showed suit as they allowed

(02:40):
the power play goal and shorthanded goal and it was
just a bit of a struggle for the Roadrunners on
the on the special teams on that Friday night.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
Yeah, it's kind of weird that they they gave up
the Shrino goal and the almost if not for a
great safe from at Valota, who he had a great
night that first night, they might have had they might
have had two given up two short end goals, but
that's something that they either corrected or just kind of
a fluke and they fixed that in the second game.
But another great night by mount Valta.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
You know, he.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
The the rest of the team wasn't, as you know, together,
as cohesive as they usually are, but he was. He
didn't miss a beat. He came up and stepped up,
stepped up and had a great night.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
Yeah, he didn't face a lot of shots in that
first game, just twenty two saves on the twenty five shots.
But yeah, I sure if you didn't see the game
or everything long, he didn't have a good one. You know,
he only faced twenty five in a loud three. But
when you've seen the game like we have, and you've
seen the way Matthew Valalta has played, you know, now
entering his second year as a Roadrunner man, he made

(03:41):
some heroics, saves on breakaways.

Speaker 4 (03:44):
I think the best one.

Speaker 2 (03:45):
Of the night when he robbed meg Now on that
two on one rush coming the other way. And yeah,
if it wasn't for Maddy's heroics, that could have been
a much different game for the Roadrunners.

Speaker 4 (03:56):
Uh, that wasn't just a two goal game.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yeah, he really.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
The other thing to remember out Colorado is that not
only did have a good year last year, you know,
making the playoffs and it went out early and expected,
but they had a good, good season, good regular season.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
It's a they added t J.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Tynan, who's in you know, who's two times very recently
two time every piece, So they're really good offense and
so for him to have a game like that where
you know, he made a bunch of really good saves,
it made a bunch of really And that's the thing
that Steve Steve Steve Potman talks about that when a
goalie makes really good saves like that inspires the rest
of the team that they like to see a great
saving like, oh wow, that's great though, let's it gives

(04:33):
them more energy.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Yeah. And actually TJ Tynan getting two points on the weekend,
and man, it just seemed that every time he touched
a puckets like watch out because he's either gonna, you know,
find his way to walk up towards the net and
get a good shot on or he's gonna find someone open.
He's just always had that knack uh, you know, wouldn't
say that knack for the net, but rather knack of

(04:55):
just making plays. So, uh, Colorado is gonna be a
good team this year, James. And you know, from the
looks of it, you're again, you're really happy that tosone
was able to just at least split that series. You know,
every team wants to start off one to oh, but
when you started off oh to one, like we did,
and then the way we were able to bounce back
in that second game on Saturday night, especially with the

(05:18):
crowd there was absolutely phenomenal for the opening weekend at
Blue Arena. It feels really good for the team, you know,
not saying it's a big side of wreath relief because
we you know, we expected to not get swept. You know,
it's really tough to get sweeps nowadays. But you know,
you got the first win and now you don't have to,
you know, go into the week winless for a potential
good matchup with the Texas Stars.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
It's I wasn't there, obviously, but you were there, and
it just seemed like from your call on from the
from the clips from from the VI different stadium, it
looked like, you know, and with a couple of it
looked like really kind of a playoff atmosphere already. And
so it's impressive to get those to rebound and get
that win, and not only to get that win in
the second game, but get a good win you the

(06:01):
whole off and your control of the game, control the game.
It's not like they just came up and snuck in
and you know, won won the game. Kind of against
the run of the player any thing. But they really
they really impressed, especially like you know at the end
when they held on that four two lead with the
there was a long time when they had the goalie
out and they were able to still throw an under
sub the hold on and get that comfortable win.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
And it's funny because I, you know, James, as you know,
I didn't go on every single trip with the team.
It was mainly the California trips to Ontario, which it
has a good crowd. They just have a very big arena,
so it's hard to fill up everybody in that crowd
for a minor league hockey team.

Speaker 4 (06:39):
And then you have the San Jose.

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Beartcuda, who were you know, they might have a good
team this year, but last season with being one of
the bottom teams, the attendance wasn't as high for them.
And then of course you had Coachella Valley which was
always always a packed barn, and those games were really fun,
especially going through and one there, and I mentioned that
in the broadcast too, where to some plays good and
big atmospheres like that. They had a couple of good
games against the Chicago Wolves last year as well, getting

(07:04):
a win in that arena, which also sells out a
lot of fans. And I always knew Colorado had a
good crowd. I always heard they had a good crowd,
and Agean would always say that the arena was always
packed in a really fun time, but you just don't
believe it until you initially see it. And you know,
I got there, and you know, my contacts of Colorado

(07:25):
the media, they were telling me it's a sold out crowd.

Speaker 4 (07:27):
I'm like, we'll see, We'll see if it's a sold
out crowd.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Every team says it's a sold out crowd for themselves,
but it really was. And you know, talking to Steve
Podvin and all the guys before the games and after
the games, and even after the first loss, it was
all about just trying to keep that crowd as quiet
as possible. And James, I think you were watching the
game and I mentioned on the broadcast the next day
one of the big moments. It wasn't the three to

(07:50):
one loss, but one thing Colorado does in the third period.
It kind of all get on their feed and start
ringing their bells. Everyone's standing for like at least a
couple of minutes, and we were on the Power play
and Igor Sokolov scored that nice power play goal with
the setup from uh Andrew Agazino and oh man, who
else got the assist on that, well, right, it was
Dudah so Duda and Agazino was setting Sokolov up for

(08:12):
that power play goal to make it two to one,
and it just completely silenced the crowd. And that's what
the Roadunners are good at doing.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
Yeah, they you know, like you said, they they play
really they always step up and play really well in
those situations. And that's a big thing about they did
in game two where they started off the game with
a goal and they kind of you know, people are
still settling in, people so psyched, and it's really impressive
the way they're able to that poise they have. And
you know, one thing that they did they responded over

(08:40):
the weekend. They give up a goal and then they
come back and they respond. They play hard or there's
a fight when Montana had and they scored right after,
you know, they did. They their team that it seems
so far, at least this early per the season, and
their team that really responds well and really really handles
adversity well.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
So James, there were ten total goals in these two games,
as Colorado won it three to one the first one
and then road Vers won it four to two in
the second match. And I think I just did my
math right on right now on the air, But out
of the ten goals, seven of them were special teams.
The special teams were a big, big aspect for this

(09:20):
entire weekend, as I just mentioned. First game, Colorado had
a power play goal and a short handed goal and
then the one to five on five goal, and the
Roadrunners had their own power play goals. Second game, we
had three power play goals to get things started, and
then two five on five goals and then a run
Runners scored the power play goal at the end there.

(09:42):
And there are a lot of penalties too, and you know,
we were kind of in a similar stance last season
when we started. And yes, it's a thing we don't
always want to talk about, but you know, it's just
staying out of the penalty box. And you know, for
two song's sake, two games in a row allowing seven
penalties to Colorado and they went what was it twelve

(10:03):
or fourteen on the PK. So actually that's that's pretty good,
you know, And sure the message in the locker room
is going to stay out, you know, stay out of
the penalty box. But at least early on in the
stages of the season, the first two games are PK
was severely tested and it showed up.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
Yeah, certainly you don't want to pick a lot of minors,
But I think that good point that you made in
the pot in the broadcast is that they weren't chief penalties.
They were just kind of aggressive penalties, where like I said,
it felt like a playoff game. So you're gonna have
an atmosphere like that where you're really aggressive, you're trying
to get the puck, you're really trying to get positioned
and everything, and you pick up little penalties like that.

(10:42):
So I don't know if it's concerned, but you know,
the fact that they had such a great penalty kill,
I think that really kind of and against a team
like Colorado had a really good penalty gill, I think
that really kind of, you know, kind of emphasizes the
need to cut down on those penalties. You still want to, obviously,
but it didn't wasn't a problem obviously.

Speaker 4 (11:01):
Yeah, it'll get picked up over time.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
As you know, we were talking about a lot after
the first game. This is a brand new Team's James,
brand new team James, and it's you know, it's a
lot of new faces and the chemistry is just going
to take some time. And you know that even though
the first game we saw glimpses of it again with
that nice Igor Sokolov goal with Agazino and Duda on
the assist. The second game, the chemistry came all there

(11:26):
with Ben McCartney scoring first again the road runs game,
that early power play, Julian Lutz and Robbie Russo with
the assists on those on that goal, and then we
had Akuratu scoring the two power play goals. Of course,
as I mentioned, Milos Kellman and Let's both getting two assists,
and Igor Sokolov and ardam Duda getting helpers as well,
including the Agazino goals.

Speaker 4 (11:47):
So, as I.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
Said, the new guys really showed up. We're seeing the
rookies come up the pace. And Uh James, we talked
about him after those two preseason games. Ardam Duda just
the way he played, the way he's gated, he scored
the power play goal and now he has two assists
in his first two regulation North American Pro Hockey games,
and we talked about the journey as he has had,

(12:10):
and he is really just he's starting to be He's
easily starting to become a star for the road Runners
early on in the get go.

Speaker 3 (12:18):
He's off to a great start.

Speaker 1 (12:20):
You would you know, obviously he's really talented drafted high,
but you do expect there to be some adjustment when
you get to the professional North American game. But it
just doesn't seem like he needs to make that adjustments.
He's able to step up and just make such an
impact right there. Like Yo, we talked about last year
Akuatu doing really well and he's did really well yesterday.

(12:40):
But I think he's off to even a better start
than Aku did last year, and he had a great
start two season when he came over.

Speaker 3 (12:46):
Last year.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
Yeah, and aku slow star in the first ten games.
I think just had two points in the first ten
and then went kind of on a point per game
pace for the rest of the season. And he's off
to a better starting we did last year. Now with
the two assis. Milos Coman also had a hot start
last season. He's off to a hot start as well.
And yeah, the guys who didn't get points. You know,

(13:08):
in this opening weekend that's okay too, because again it's
it's gonna take time. And you know, I was saying
on the broadcast the Roadrunners, you know, even though they
had a great offseason and acquired all this talent, and
yes there still are going to be one of the
better teams in the Pacific Division, in the Western Conference.
It's not gonna happen in a week, or it's not

(13:28):
gonna happen in a day. You know, they say Rome
wasn't built in a day, and this Roadrunners twenty four
to twenty five team that's going to have a lot
of success.

Speaker 4 (13:36):
It's not going to be built in the day. It's
going to take time.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
And just like last season, I'm not saying it's gonna
happen again, but just like last season, the Roadrunners start.

Speaker 4 (13:45):
Off two and oh.

Speaker 2 (13:46):
They had a good weekend with Texas and then as
we know, had that struggling home stand to get things
started against Bakersfield Coachella Valley. Then after kind of starting
three and three and kind of treading water a little bit,
I think they're eight and six by the time they
went to Henderson, and that's when things just really got
rolling for the team, and it might happen again and
we might have to wait a you know, maybe the

(14:08):
first monthish of the season for the team to really
get things rolling.

Speaker 4 (14:12):
But you never know. We'll have to see how these
next two games go.

Speaker 2 (14:16):
For the home opening weekend against the Texas Stars, a
team the Roadrunners swept last year four and oh clean,
really good, really good record against the Central Division. And James,
just what do you think the Roadrunners will have to
do for this upcoming weekend to just keep things rolling
and get some wins at home, especially for that home

(14:37):
opener with the red carpet and introducing everybody.

Speaker 1 (14:41):
I think they need to continue what they've been doing,
continue building that chemistry. That's you know, I was impressed
in the in the preseason game, but I saw that
they the goals they had, they looked really they looked
like they hadn't been together for more than you know,
they look they've been together for more than a few days,
even though they just had even though they just started
training a few days before that. So that's something that
Steve talked about. But a couple of years ago when

(15:04):
they had their preseason at Henderson and then a week
later they had their home opener at Henderson and I
was like, Oh, that's kind of cool. You know, we
can spend spend a week in Las Vegas. But he's like,
He's like, yeah, it's cool, but we also get to
have that time to bond and so you know, they
went to Colorado a little bit early. They were able
to travel together and he really likes long road trips
like that where they can bond and get together. So

(15:26):
I think that's a key to having a good start
to get all these talent. They have a lot of talent,
but they need to mesh them together and brook on
the chemistry. And so far it looks like they've made
a lot of good strides in that they kind of
had some issues with the in the first game when
they when they gave up those like like when they
gave us rand and gold. There are some communication issues
and kind of connuity issues. But I think overall they're

(15:48):
making a lot of strides and to continue to make
those and so when Texas comes to town, they should
they should be even better with a couple of practice
weeks like that.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
Yeah, this was a this was a long trip to
get things started off. Practice in Chandler Arizona on Monday,
came back to Tucson, then left for Scottsdale the next morning.
That's when I hitched a ride on the bus to
start my little I want to call it a vacation,
but you know, I didn't realize how long I was
gone until getting back home to I'm like, got this film,

(16:17):
it's pretty much been an entire week. And went to Scottsdale,
went to the ice dem got some work done there.
Forgot how cold that place is, and I haven't been
there since training camp last season, uh, when I went
to go interview guys like Josh Stone and Stephen Camphor
when guys were still playing in in the Phoenix area.
But went back there and then the next day bus

(16:41):
to the airport and then flew to Denver and got
there on what what was it, Thursday or Wednesday night?

Speaker 4 (16:48):
Thursday? So uh yeah, yeah, I got there on Wednesday nights.
So yeah. I spent a couple of.

Speaker 2 (16:53):
Days in uh, Colorado, and it was nice. Went to
Fort Collins, San Jose stay. We stayed at the same
hotel as they did, and I am a former alum,
so that was kind of cool of finding out and
seeing the players there and stuff, and fortunately they did
lose on this Saturday. But yeah, it was a nice
long trip James for the first one of the season

(17:13):
because like just like you said, it, you know, brings
the guys together, It bonds them. It gets the newer
guys acclimated with one another, because you know, we're about
to spend the next seven and a half months to
you know, hopefully nine months to.

Speaker 4 (17:29):
For a full playoff run.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
We're about to start spending a long time with each other,
and these guys got to get used to each other now,
you know, hunkering down in these hotel rooms, those on
bus rides, playing flights and just everything. And again it
was a good first opening weekend and now we have
a two good matchups with the Texas Stars. One player
I do want to talk about, James, or at least

(17:51):
two guys. As we mentioned earlier, Matthew Volalta having a
really good Friday night. Again, didn't face a lot of
the shots, twenty two saves on twenty five shots. But
the second night we elected to go with Jackson Stobber.
He made his Roadrunners debut and he did not disappoint
with thirty three saves on thirty five shots and at

(18:13):
the end there, Colorado outshot the Roadrunners twenty to eleven,
and Stober made just easy saves. He made it look
easy out there and got to see the first look
of him, and that just gets you excited for what
these two goaltenders are going to do for the Roadrunners
this year.

Speaker 1 (18:33):
Yeah, it looked like a great performance from Jackson where
he didn't make as many big spectacle saves as Matt
but the night before, but he made a lot of
saves and made it He's very fluid with his saves
and he really faced abrage and that at the end
of the at the end of the game when Carlato
was down for to two and they really wanted to
get back in there obviously, but you know, he really

(18:55):
looked really poised. It did really well, and it's a
it's an outing that I think roder Anders fans can
be really impressed by. And it's so much different than
last year obviously, when Matt just was thrust into the
starting role stressed I'm thrust in the goalie number one
spot and when I Rostoff went to Colorado. So it's

(19:17):
such a big difference to have already have to to
potential starters like that already starting off the season.

Speaker 4 (19:26):
Yeah, it's much different.

Speaker 2 (19:28):
We had Matthew wo walt and Ivan prose Matav as
the potential you know, kind of one A, one B,
and everybody in the building just knew like this is
gonna be a really good goaltending duo with the blue
line and the forge that we had to play good
defense for the goaltenders. And then uh, as you everyone
may know the story of prosvatav going on waivers just

(19:51):
with running out of uh you know, kind of options
I guess are just being sent down.

Speaker 4 (19:57):
To the a h L with with those rules because.

Speaker 2 (19:59):
You can only send a guy a certain amount of
times to start the year, and Ivan was out of those,
so he had to go on waivers. He got cleaned
by Colorado and then as the story rights itself, Matthew
Volalta was thrust into the starting role. We signed Dylan
Wells to a PTO. He earned a contract eventually and
it was a very serviceable backup. And we still have

(20:19):
Dylan Wells and Anson Thorn under HL contracts, but they
are with the Allen Americans and the EHL, and you know,
it just gives them time to play and you know,
unfortunately we can't keep everybody, but those guys will definitely
be back. We'll they'll they'll be called up eventually because
you know, it's a long season. Injuries will happen to
hopefully not I'm not saying it's going to, but it
could happen. Uh, And there's a there could be a

(20:41):
chance where Maddie's called up and Stoburd becomes the starter
and we need Dylan Wells and Nanson Thornton has that
death spot there. But uh, yeah, I was curious to
see if we're gonna go with Stoubur in the second
game because we just didn't really know what the plan
was yet, so so many back to back starts with
Maddie because it was just Matthew Villot. But I think
now with Staburnett, we can give Maddie the nights he needs.

(21:05):
And honestly, Stopburd could be a starter too, just with
the stats he had last year with Rockford and getting
the eighteen wins and he gets his first one as
a roadrunner, and he just looked very calm and composed,
composed out there getting from point A to point B
and making the easy saves. And this can be one
of the best goaltending duos in the league.

Speaker 1 (21:25):
Yeah, that's something that with the schedule this year, you're
definitely gonna want to have another great starter, another potential
starter again Jackson, because they if we talked about it before,
but the alternate of the schedule where instead of having
a lot of Southwestern approach for the for the Roadrunners
where they play a lot of the California school out
of schools, a lot of the California teams and Henderson

(21:46):
and whatnot, they're playing, they have another trip to Colorado,
they have two series against Colorado at home. They have
a couple of trips to Calgary, a couple of trips
to to play the Canucks. So you're gonna you're gonna
have a lot of those double knights, double back to
back knights, as opposed to last year, where you might
have more. You might have one and done where you

(22:08):
go to Coachella for one game and come back, or
you go to Coachell and you have a day off
and you go to you go to Ontario or something.
So this is the schedule this year is going to
have a lot more back to back nights, So you
definitely want to give give your.

Speaker 3 (22:23):
Back up a lot more time, a lot more time
than you did last year. Probably.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
Yeah, it's it's always the tough aspect of the AHL,
and at the end of the day, there are you know,
similar amount of games at the end of the season.
Uh you know, of course, the AHL having ten less
games than the AHL, or sorry, AHL having ten less
games than the NHL, NHL having eighty two, AHL having
seventy two. But there's just so many back to backs

(22:50):
in the AHL because you just want to have that
kind of week long space in case you call guys up.
You know, guys are moving all over the place within
every organization, so unfortunately you do have to have the
back to backs usually on the weekends on the Friday
Saturdays or Saturday Sundays, and one offs are are pretty rare,
which Tucson does have a couple in Coachella Valley this year.

(23:12):
But yeah, that's that's why having goaltending depth is super important. Yeah,
Matthew Valta was able to do it just fine. He
had plenty of weekends where he started both games where
he looked electric in both of them, but there were
also times last season where he looks good the first
game and then the second game, maybe he got away
from just a little bit. So to have Jackson Stopburr

(23:33):
in that crease as well, it's it's going to give
the road Runners a lot of stability. And you know,
Matthew Volalta and Stobber are gonna push each other as well,
you know, for for time in the crease because you know,
at the end of the day, the Roadrunners want to
win games. And with both these goaltenders are going to
give two soun wins and you know there will be

(23:53):
times where one guy might be struggling the other one
might be playing a little better, hopefully not. But and
Steve Pobbins gonna right with the hot hands. So these
two are definitely going to be pushing to each other
as the season goes on. And I actually caught up
with Jackson Stober after Saturday Night's victory as his first
one with the road Runners. So our first interview of

(24:13):
the season, James me with Jackson Stabber after Saturdays four
two victory. Jackson, congrats your first win as a Tucson
Roadrunner's really the chances came in that third period as
Colorado made their push, But just how'd you stay calm
and composed to keep it.

Speaker 4 (24:29):
A four to two victory for the boys.

Speaker 5 (24:30):
Yeah, like you said, they had a lot of pressure
there at the end, but I think the guy's blocking shots,
keeping things to the outside and let me see pawk.
So it was was a big team win.

Speaker 2 (24:40):
Yeah. And just what I know is from your plates
and I you were just good at getting from point
A to point B, just you know, sliding over and
kind of just being there right before the Eagles were
able to.

Speaker 4 (24:48):
Even get their shots.

Speaker 2 (24:49):
Just how'd you see the puck out there to get
in the right position at the right time.

Speaker 5 (24:52):
Yeah, I just tried to kind of get there early
so I could be set for the shot. But yeah,
that's just something that you know comes with time and
that you know what you're working on early in the
season because the game happens a lot faster than summer hockey.

Speaker 2 (25:05):
So yeah, and you know, we had Matthew volt in
last night. You went tonight and honestly probably one of
the best goaltending tandems in the league. And just what
are you looking forward to working with him and continuing
to develop and grow as now you are Tucson Roadrunner.

Speaker 5 (25:19):
Yeah, Matty's a great guy. He's been nothing but nice
and supportive of me since I got here. So I'm
really looking forward to continuing that relationship and continuing to
push each other to be better and to help the team.

Speaker 4 (25:30):
Thanks Jacks, I appreciate it, James.

Speaker 2 (25:33):
You knows my voice was was going out a little
bit after doing two straight games of play by play.

Speaker 1 (25:41):
Yeah, especially in the in the altitude, and with so
so many fans trying to try and talk over that.

Speaker 3 (25:48):
It was impressivality about you too, Thank.

Speaker 2 (25:51):
You, Yeah, it was. It was one point where it
was so loud in that arena where I just really
couldn't hear myself much, and I had to kind of
turn up my not turn up myself, but turn up
the kind of dial that makes me hear myself better,
just because it always helps. And I had to turn
down the I don't know if you heard this, but
i'd have turned down the crowd mic because they had

(26:12):
blimps all around the arena dropping stuff on those little parachutes,
and there was one right next to the crowd mic
making all the little buzzing noises, and I didn't want
fans to think there's something wrong with my equipment.

Speaker 3 (26:27):
Yeah, I saw it.

Speaker 1 (26:28):
That was funny with the they had they had what
other promotions was they were dropping like prizes or whatever,
T shirts and stuff like that with little parachutes and
they're going it was going through the whole arena and
it was funny.

Speaker 3 (26:42):
I remember the uh they still do it.

Speaker 1 (26:44):
But at LA basketball games they had a blip go round,
go around dirt halftime, go around, go roude ground. It
would just eventually I'll drop something, but it would be
something where you wait like five minutes and ever just
kind of forgot about it or unless it was right
above you.

Speaker 3 (26:59):
So that was funny. So it was a funny for
Rocha they has over at Colorado.

Speaker 2 (27:05):
Yeah, Colorado had a lot of good in arena, like
you know, kind of like what Ryan Lafman does for
the road Runners with you know, the the camera shots
and you know, certain themes. And I don't know what
he has planned for this year, but one of them
that I found funny that I think I'm gonna uh
give him an idea of. At one point we had

(27:27):
a road Runner and an Ego both in the penalty box,
and what Colorado was doing was flipping between both the
road Runner and the Egle and I think it was
dueling Lutz who was in for Tucson. I don't remember
who was in for Colorado, And every time the camera
would pan on them, it would either be cheering for
the Colorado egle player and then booing for the road run.

(27:48):
Of course, I don't want to see our boys get booed,
but uh, I don't know. If I was a fan there,
I would be absolutely enjoying that. The music was good,
and yeah, it was a fun atmosphere for the first
game of the season, and I'm excited to see that
at the Tucson Arena this upcoming weekend.

Speaker 3 (28:06):
Yeah, that's funny.

Speaker 1 (28:06):
When you're announcing it, you're like, oh, you start laughing.
You're like, I need you had to explain it. But
I don't know if if it would be hard to
f hard to imagine when you're watching the radio, but
watching the HLTV Flow Hockey, you know, it's funny to
see that and see that it was exactly what you're
talking about as you're explaining it. But it was kind
of they had some day they had another promotion where

(28:28):
they would do their to the crowd and they put
like eagle like a snaptack kind of filter.

Speaker 3 (28:33):
I don't know what if it was.

Speaker 1 (28:35):
I don't know what the technology is, but it's kind
of like a Snaptat kind of filter where they had
put they're super imposed eagle over Son's head and they'd
do that, and then when some of the rotors with
the Pelly box, they put like a clown mask over them,
and they did that after a Montana's fight. I was like, oh,
you put a clown mask over him, but he won
the fight.

Speaker 3 (28:52):
So it's kind of funny.

Speaker 4 (28:54):
But I was awesome.

Speaker 1 (28:56):
Yeah, so kind of backfired on him a little bit
because it was it was a good fight, and you know,
I think you say that he ended up the victor,
but it was funny if they put in a clown
clown emoji over him after after that fight.

Speaker 4 (29:09):
Yeah, funny thing.

Speaker 2 (29:10):
I think it was about seven or eight seconds after
that Anyabuci fight, the Roadrunners scored and took a three
to one lead, and I was reading off the fights
that we had last year when that's goal when that
goal happened, because I was just trying to read that
off and play kind of started quickly, and that's what

(29:31):
happens in hockey when you're trying to read off stats
and there's a game happening in front of you. Anya
Bouci with eight fights. Last year, Curtis Douglas led the
lead with led the team with ten. I don't know
if he led the league. And it's it's hard to
determine the fights of the entire AHL because they don't
have that as a stat which I really think they
need to add one because I want to see who
got the most fights out of the entire league, and

(29:53):
Kurz Douglas with ten is definitely up there, but Douglas
not with the on the lineup as a as at
the moment with an injury, but he will be back soon.
But other than that, last season Douglas had ten and
Anyabuchi had eight and then Ben McCarty was third on
the team with six. And yeah, no no shock there
of Anyabuci getting the first fight of the season. And James,

(30:16):
as I said, the first game, we didn't see a
lot of kind of dirty penalties or scrappy penalties. It
was all just kind of skill set ones where you know,
one guy was just out skating the other and a
dude hooks him.

Speaker 4 (30:28):
Lots of those, uh, lots of those breakaways.

Speaker 2 (30:31):
I thought Ryan McGregor was gonna be given a penalty
shot at some point he wasn't.

Speaker 3 (30:35):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (30:35):
There was a moment where Steinberg had a breakaway right
in front and he was hooked by Cannadon and that
wasn't a penalty. There were moments where uh, puck was
up in the air and guys were accidentally hitting each
other when it was going down, kind of like a
pass interference. And then the second game was when we
finally saw the scrappiness. I think the Roadrunners wanted to
bring that to the table for game two.

Speaker 3 (30:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (30:58):
I think that goes back into my kind of theory
by kind of thinking about where it was like, oh,
this really fucking a playoff game, you know, and where
you didn't see a lot of fights. You just saw
that one, but you just saw a lot of scrappiness,
a lot of aggressive penalties, and it's a it's a
series that I think they could take a lot a
lot away from and you can you couldn't come back

(31:20):
home and have a lot of good film on.

Speaker 2 (31:24):
So James, when the game ended, Uh, I gotten a
text from you, but I didn't see it with just
everything going on. And then when I finally got to
the airport and got to order my breakfast sandwich. I
got Chipotle egg sandwich from right next to our gate
when we're waiting for our flight from Denver to Tucson today,
I guess because today is Sunday, it's a lazy Sunday.

(31:47):
And you had you had sent me a quiz based
on Ahl logos, and you told me I gotta take this,
and I'm like, I'm gonna get one hundred percent.

Speaker 4 (31:57):
James.

Speaker 2 (31:58):
I literally read off the play these team scores every
single game. But the curveball of it was you had
to type it in, so all of a sudden, you
need to know how to spell out these these team names.
And that's what stumped me when I started it, because
I was like, I thought it was I thought it
was gonna be one of those quizzes like multiple choice
where it's just like it was show like the Penguins

(32:19):
or something, the Wilkesbary's Grand Penguins, and it was show
like Pittsburgh Penguins. Uh, Atlantic Penguins are just something random
where it's like, oh, this is too obvious. But uh,
I got stumped when I started it because I had
to type it.

Speaker 4 (32:32):
In and at that point.

Speaker 2 (32:34):
It's the skill set of being a good texter depending
on or typer, depending on if you're doing it on
your phone or not.

Speaker 4 (32:41):
I got one hundred percent, and then you told me
you missed one.

Speaker 3 (32:46):
Yeah, it was on Friday.

Speaker 1 (32:48):
I was looking through, you know, with the nhls'son starting
with the HL starting season starting. I looked on Reddit
at the Hockey Reddit page or red Reddit site, and
then I looked at HL at its site and this
one had put the quizz up there that they made,
and I thought, like, you know, I looked at it.
I was like, oh, this this is a good quiz
because it's something that pinners, beginners can do where they're like, oh,

(33:08):
well what team is this? You know whatever, But even
like someone like you, where you're like, you know all
the teams, but it has a time thing. So for
me it was like can I finish all all the names?
And I did get close. But for you, obviously you
know all the names, but it's how quickly you can
do it, and so it is tough. With the I
did on my iPad, so it was a little easier,
but it's tough when you're typing it in because you
can't see where you're typing it. So when I was

(33:31):
doing it, I was breezing through, beasing through. I was like, oh,
this is easy, you know. But then I got to
the one that stumbled, the one that I missed. I
got a ninety seven percent. The only one I missed
was Rockford because I kept putting hogs. For some reason,
I forgot ice hogs. I put hogs. I was like, oh,
maybe that's wrong. Is it pigs or porch or something.
Because the way that the way that quizz is they

(33:51):
just took off the names. So the roaders was kind
of easy where they just took off cheos on road owners,
but some of them they took off the middle of
a part where their wordmark is the logo. So for Rockford,
I could tell, you could tell obviously it's a pig,
but I was like, I thought it was hogs, but
I could have remember it was an ice hogs. So
I went through it. I saw all of that part,
but I did finish it. At when I was doing it,

(34:14):
I got all the old dames and I was like, oh,
you know, I should come back and.

Speaker 3 (34:17):
Just skip it. And I came back at it right
out of time.

Speaker 1 (34:19):
Before I could realize Oh yeah, it's Ice Hogs, but
that's a team that road orders. You know, they did
play last year, but they do play this year, so
we'll get familiar with them again.

Speaker 4 (34:28):
Yeah, it was kind of weird.

Speaker 2 (34:30):
There are teams like Ontario Rain where the whole logo
was blocked out because their letters or the word is
the logo. It's like one of those teams where you
know who they are, but they don't have like an
actual logo, it's just the the wording of it.

Speaker 4 (34:44):
Another one, I remember.

Speaker 2 (34:45):
Texas Stars completely blocked off, so you just had the
new the shape and the colors. Bridgeport just showed the
islander and no Bridgeport. And of course, yeah, the Roadrunner
one was easy because all you just saw was Dusty
doing is regular skate. James, I think you might have
found a new segment for, you know, this new version
of the Insider podcast. Maybe every week you'll find a

(35:07):
quiz on Reddit that relates to hockey and then you
and I can try to take it and see if
we get them right. And I think we're off to
a good start with ahl logos having to spell them
out and really it becoming a typing, a typing race
because you got five minutes to do it, and I
was able to get one hundred percent, thankfully, because one

(35:27):
thing that helped was when you typed it in, it
moved you on to the next one, like you didn't
have to like click enter or anything. But I think,
I think we want to keep this going. I think
you got to find us a quiz for next time.
And next show will be after the second game on Sunday,
which is a four pm start, And kind of excited
for the four pm start. We didn't play a lot

(35:49):
of Sunday games last year with earlier starts, so I'm
kind of looking forward to that one after the home opener.

Speaker 3 (35:55):
Yes, it's a nice change of pace.

Speaker 1 (35:56):
I prefer that games because you could you could watch spors,
you can watch more stuffery today and stuff like that.
But it's a nice change of pace because it's always
Friday and Saturday pretty much for the WEEKID games, so
it's a nice change of pace. And plus if your
your family, you could go to that came in a
little easier you have your little kids. You can go
to a game that starts at four a lot easier
than you go to game to start to seven or

(36:17):
starts to get a six thirty on the weeknight. So
so that's a nice change of pace. And we had
I think there was the there might have been like
one Sunday Sunday afternoon game last year and the.

Speaker 4 (36:29):
Day one we had a same day game.

Speaker 2 (36:30):
I think that was like the we might have been
the only Sunday game at home we had. We had
a couple on the road, but that might have been
the only one. And now this year, I think we
have six six Sunday games, So uh yeah, it's a
it's a big change of pace. I honestly love this
schedule a lot more than last year. It's it's more
evened out. We have, you know, again with Saturday. Every

(36:53):
game is gonna be on a Saturday, and obviously Sunday
you hate to miss NFL football, But when you get
that extra Friday off, I think it's gonna be good
for the guys, you know, to like, you know, go
out to dinner with each other or or just kind
of enjoy themselves on a Friday night for once, rather
than playing two games on Friday Saturday and then all
of a sudden it's Sunday weeks weekends over and you're

(37:17):
just exhausted, uh from the games that you just played,
and and you know, from the UH staff standpoint as well,
for you as well, because you're at the games late.
H everyone's exhausted on the Sunday. But I think having
the game on Sunday now and then maybe taking a
little a little bit more easier on the on the
Monday side. Uh, I think it's gonna be a good schedule.

Speaker 3 (37:38):
Yeah. I like that.

Speaker 1 (37:39):
There are the things that it offers more. You know,
people that you know the other you know all the
other ice hockey and Tucson offers them the opportunity to
you know, play UH play on Friday and you know,
have a little bit more schedule too, So that's nice.
There's some games where we play on I do remember
one Sunday night games where we're over there working on

(38:01):
the story where they're working on stuff after the game,
and they're over there playing playing playing an adult league game.
So that was kind of interesting. I mean, if you
look at the there's just one sheet of ice obviously
in Tucson, so everything's all packed in and like the
I'm doing a story. In the UFA women's hockey team there,
they restarted their program this year and they practice and

(38:21):
in the early morning. I think it's like a six
thirty or seventh therey or something like that. Definitely early
for call students, but they practiced surely early, and that
was their choice. But they have to pack everyone in
like with the junior road Runners, with the adult hockey,
with you know, with the U of A man the
v A women. So it's a little nice to have
that little change the schedule where they can play on

(38:41):
where those teams can play on Friday too.

Speaker 2 (38:44):
Yeah, it kind of it gives the U of A
Hockey teams to opportunity to play Friday nights because they
don't get to they have to play Friday during the day.
And yeah, the fans still show up regardless of the time.
I've been to those games while I'm doing my preparation
for Roadrunner games later on that night. And cool having
kind of the doubleheader going to watch You of A
Hockey during the day and then ending it off with

(39:05):
Tucson at night. But now this time around, You of
A will have a chance to play on Friday night
games and then turn around on the Saturday. And then
of course they do still get to the play at
night when the Roadrunners are on the Road as well,
but just try to get as many games as as
possible the TCC. And you know, with Tucson having a
couple of Saturday Sunday games, now we get a kind

(39:27):
of that, I don't even know what you call it,
a triple header of hockey for you of a and
you know, men's and women's and then the Roadrunners on
Friday Saturday Sunday. So it's a it's gonna be a
great season of hockey. Tucson off to a one and
one start and James, we're just looking forward for the
gala on Wednesday. If you haven't gotten your tickets yet,

(39:48):
face off Gala on Wednesday night at six pm, come
and meet your Tucson road Runs head coach Steve Povin
is planning to speak President Bob Hoffman, Captain austineberg Gansky.
We haven't even talked about James ostabig Gansky named as
the road Runners team captain, and uh, it's gonna be
a good weekend for that. But yeah, James got our

(40:09):
captain this year. Austin mc gansky, and he had quite
the journey on the PTO last year and now this
season he's earned the AHL contract he's a little bit
younger for a captain, but the coaches chose him for
a reason and he's going to be leading this Roadrunners
team this year.

Speaker 1 (40:27):
Yeah, he's such a great story because he the year
before last year, he was on the Coachella when they
made it all the way to the to the call
the Cup finals, and he he came over to the
new room promise, see whatever. And so he came over
with the Tucson but he came over to PTO, which
if you're not I don't think you've talked about it
a lot in the pod, but it's a it's a

(40:47):
tryout contract. So you're living in hotel, you know, it's
it's it's really a tough existence because you don't know
what your future is going to be. And even though
he's a he's on he was a typical peacho player
because he's so talented and had someone said, someone's experience,
it's just a tough situation to be in that or
you don't know what the future is going to be.
You're living in a hotel, you know, even at homiea

(41:09):
I should say. And so it's just a tough, tough
way to go and for him to not only start
off the season like that where he was a scratcher
first couple of games you said, he came over, he
came off the PTO and he became such a big
part of the team that the next year, this year,
he became the captain.

Speaker 3 (41:26):
It's really impressive.

Speaker 2 (41:28):
Yeah, I think that's the most crazy thing about Paganski
being named the captain of the team. He was even
a starting player last year because again we had all
the death that we had. Paganski played nearly all the
games for Coachella Valley, played every single playoff game for
them as well, and again going all the way to
the Caller Cup, and then signed a PTO and he'd

(41:50):
even start off as he started off as a scratch
as you just said, and then early on in the
season helt really six games in that's when we started
getting all the call ups and injuries started early on
for Tucson, and Paganski was just one of those players
that stepped in when his name was called and had
a career year for himself with fourteen goals, which was
a career high for him. And he's been in the

(42:12):
AHL for quite some time. He's been in pro hockey
for quite some time, and now fast forward to another year,
he signed the extension with the road Runners and now
he's the team captain for the twenty four to twenty
five season. Kevin connaughten and Andra Gazino, Ben McCartney and
Travis Baron will all serve as alternate captains as well.
So a really really good group of guys to be

(42:36):
all leading the team this year.

Speaker 1 (42:38):
Yeah, And the other thing about Poglo becoming and the
captain is that it's an interesting thing about you know,
obviously in AHL you don't have like captains for like
eight years or something for a really long time, but
because of the nation of the league. But the previous captain,
Stephen caffer he came late in the season before on
when they traded for him and obviouste there and then

(42:59):
before that Adam Kracknell he came right he came during
the off season. So it's a little good for continuity
for him to have put Austin become the captain where
he was already in the organization last year.

Speaker 3 (43:10):
So it's that kind of continuity.

Speaker 1 (43:12):
And you talked about so many alternate captains, there's so
much leadership in the room that that's something that they
really emphasized with the Runners really emphasized to have a
lot of guys who are potential leaders like that. So
I'm not surprised to have so many alternate captains and
so many options and that leadership group.

Speaker 4 (43:30):
Yeah, I think that's one of the things too.

Speaker 2 (43:33):
The road Runners were a very very young team last year,
and yeah, it's normal because the AHL, it's the developmental league,
so you expect to have a lot of young guys.
But I think this past off season, you know, management
wanted to bring more veterans in and that's why we
got Kevin Connaughton, Andrew Agazino, Robbie Russo as well, and

(43:53):
then you still have the guys who were still leaders
in our locker room. So now this year it's just
more of the mix of the of the rookies, the
guys in their second or third years were still getting
their footing together. And then you have the AHL slash
NHL veterans of guys who who have been in both
leagues that are that know how the system works. They

(44:15):
know how to deal with the loss, they know how
to deal with the win and try to keep the
winning streaks going. And I think this year is just
a way. I wouldn't say a better mix because again,
last year was very successful for the team, and uh,
you know, Camphor was the Camphor was kind of just
the one vet vet I guess, you know, the guy
who's had years and years of experience went out. This season,

(44:35):
it's more of a mix of that, and I think
that's gonna give the Roadrunners uh more of an edge
in games that are really really close when you guys,
when you have the vets who know how to handle
those situations and know how to win those games.

Speaker 1 (44:50):
It's a situation where you look at the parent club
Utah where they're moving on and they're trying to get
to the playoffs now instead of getting try trying to
get draft picks. So that opens up options for the
Rowners where they're able to add in more experienced guys,
more more guys coming back like Andrew and Austin and

(45:10):
stuff like that. So it's it's really a kind of
a sign of a really healthy organization from not just
from Utah, but from from Tucson too. So it's really
exciting to see that and it's something that I think
you'll see pay dividends late in the season when they're
when you have that experience, you do want to have
young guys, you know, like obviously Dan Gunther did really

(45:31):
well last year, Don't did really well last year. You
have young young guys like that, and you do you
still do have a lot of prospects on the Rennards
this year, but it's nice to have a lot of
guys that have a lot of experience on rowners this year.
It's really gonna help them try and get that division title.

Speaker 2 (45:46):
Yeah, And I think the thing is too last year,
when we started off the year we had we you know,
we had the clear cut big name prospects for the
team of Josh Done and Gunther. And this year, you know,
there's still big name prospects with Julian Lutson, Miko Mattika,
and Maverick Lameru who's probably the biggest name or at

(46:08):
least the first round pick. But also Noel Nord had
a good preseason and he had a couple of good
looks in those first two regulation games as well. But
I think the difference is this year we just we
don't also have the clear guy where whoever needs to
get called up and when that time comes, we don't
know who's gonna get called up right away? And last

(46:28):
year we just kind of probably assumed it was going
to be Gunther and it wasn't. It was actually, you know,
Milo's coming and Ben McCartney were the first ones to
get called up, but we kind of just knew, like, yeah,
Gunther and don't they're gonna get called up eventually. I
think this year, at least in the in the beginning stages,
we really just don't know, like any of these guys
can get called up. And I think that's why a

(46:48):
lot of guys like coming to the road Runners, because
it's all just equal opportunity, Whereas some NHL and AHL
affiliates they call it the same three guys every single year,
where as for us, any guy can get and every
guy's gonna be given an equal chance.

Speaker 1 (47:03):
Yeah, they set the obviously, the Router set the record
for most call ups last year, and that was even
beating the record for a couple of years before that
where they had where the Coyotes had so many injuries
that they had to keep calling people up.

Speaker 3 (47:16):
So it's really wild to see that.

Speaker 1 (47:18):
I don't know, you see so many call ups, but
they're able to obviously be successful for a second and
get a whole playoff game, put the whole playoff series.

Speaker 3 (47:25):
So it's it's just interesting.

Speaker 1 (47:29):
It's just just it's just your it's just so true
to so interesting to see who but get called up
and you're ordering coup and if you're a fan, you're ready,
like you're looking to schedule, like, well, I'll wait till
the semesters over where the kids are more free. It
will go to war games or I'll wait so after
football season or something. But you should probably go down
because you don't know who's getting called up and who's

(47:50):
who are gonna be who's gonna be gone? Because yeah,
I mean Casslory Glaster, he played like two games where
the road Roaders at and he got called up. He did,
he did go come back for the playoffs. But you
just gone so quick. So that's something that you should
definitely look into, like, oh, I gotta gotta check out
these guys right now because we don't know who's gonna
be gone.

Speaker 2 (48:07):
That's a really, really good point, James, I didn't really
even think about that. Yeah, guys like Michael Kessering only
played a couple of games for the Roadrunners got called
up and then we didn't see him again. It was
one of those moments where it's like, yeah, uh, you know, bye,
but we hope to not see you back. You know,
good luck, We'll miss you, but don't come back. And
Castle Ring was one of those guys. And yeah, any

(48:29):
one of these guys on this roster can be the
exact same player. You never know. If you know, Andregazino
has had plenty of NHL experience, you can get called
up and we might never see him again, or see
them with Kevin Connaughton, or you never know. Utah might
just say, you know, let's just call up the kid
Maverick Lamoru and then he ends up having a good
first few games and we don't see him again. So fans,
