Speaker 1 (00:00):
When you want more Roadrunners, We've got more road Runners.
This is the Tucson Roadrunners Insider Podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Welcome everybody to this week's insider podcast. Jonathan Schaefer here
with Arizona Daily Stars James Kelly as the road Runners
finished off the three game road trip at one and two. James,
we have a lot to uncover, but tusaon just getting
the one victory of the three game road trip last
Saturday with a big two one victory over the Henderson

(00:30):
silver Knights. Now sitting at six and seven, snap the
three game losing skit as well, and you know teams
at six and seven right now, one game under five hundred.
We're still kind of waiting for those string of wins
to start to come together for the team. And now
it doesn't get any easier. They have a big two
game series against the Calgary Wranglers this upcoming weekend, and

(00:50):
then a quick turnaround for another two game series against
the Coachella Valley Firebirds next Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Luckily,
all home for the Roadrunners and for Tucson. Again, we're
kind of waiting for that string of wins to start
coming together. We saw a little bit of it. When
Tuson was able to get over five hundred at five
and four, they lost three in a row, dropping a

(01:12):
five and seven. They did get the big win against
the Henderson Silver Nights on Saturday to win two to one.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
But now it doesn't get any easier.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
They faced the couple of the top teams in the
hl's Pacific Division. We know great Wranglers are doing right now,
and the Firebirds have won five in a row up
to this point. And with that being said, it's a
big task for two soon ahead for a big four
game homestand yeah, not gonna lie.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
Started off as a tough road trip for the run
on there's two losses, but then they had a great
rebound game on Saturday where they improved on a couple
of things that they were improved on some things that
they were struggling with early on the season or struggling
with on the road trip. And coming up they have
they have Coachella and Calgary, a couple a couple main
stays in the top of standings on the last couple

(01:59):
of years, and they're back back up there. And it's
gonna be a great, great home staff for the Roadrunners.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Yeah, it's just it's all about opportunity again, and that's
what I've been talking about with Steve Potvin. You know,
even though when you lose a game, you have the
next opportunity, whether it's the next game or the next week,
it's always.

Speaker 3 (02:17):
Just opportunity to get better.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
That's why we play these hockey games, and that's why
we do what we do to not only because we
love it, because we want to get better at it
every single day. And with that being said, as I
mentioned top two teams or really within the top three
teams of the AHL Specific Division right now that the
Roadrunners will be facing Calgary at twelve three, one to zero,
they have a three game point streak for themselves right now.

(02:41):
They just lost to San Jose yesterday on Sunday in
overtime as the Barracuda were able to come back in
that game. San Jose's at nine to five right now
at second place in the division. But then you got
the Coachella Valley Firebirds the upcoming week after the fact
at eight and five right now, but they have on
five games in a row, so we have games Friday

(03:02):
and Saturday, and then two more on Tuesday and Wednesdays.
So only a two game break for the road Runners
or two day break for the Roadrunners after this upcoming weekend.
So really a four game top stretch for Tucson before
Thanksgiving against two really good teams. And you know, this
is a when in say it's gonna make or break

(03:23):
the season. Obviously, we're still in the beginning stages. We're
not even close to halfway through yet, only going through
twelve games so far, or thirteen games rather so far
at six and seven. But you can really tell that
this upcoming four game series can really turn the things
around for Tucson and it's probably the biggest test that

(03:43):
they'll ever face in the beginning stages of this season.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
Yeah, it's a you, like you said, not must win,
but it's an opportunity to you know, regain some of
that standings, points and prestige that they had that you know,
you expect them to better when they have that stretch
against San Diego, Ontario and Henderson. But if they have
a really good stretch against Calgary first place, go chill

(04:08):
out their place, then you know, really really kind of
makes up for.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
That, yeah, you know, and obviously getting that bit win
at the end of the road trip was huge because
you know, throughout the week they were again they're the
losses were games that the Roadrunners were well within. You know,
against Ontario, they just were able to score early in
the game, and the kind of felt that the Roadrunners

(04:35):
had to play catch up the whole time. But at
one point that game was tied with Hunter Drew tying
it up, but then Ontario scored the rest of the
way and and won that matchup. And then Sam goes
for Tucson in this on the Friday night game against
the Silver Knights, in which the Knights took a quick
two nothing lead, Tucson scored one and were well part

(04:56):
of me. Henderson was up three to nothing and Tucson
at the beg ginning of the third period, Tucson scored
the first goal of that third period, and you kind
of felt that momenta was finally swinging towards Tucson's side,
but Anderson was just able to hang on to the
win and we're victorious in that game. Then you kind
of felt the same kind of energy for the Saturday

(05:18):
game where Anderson scored a minute in You're thinking like, man,
here we go again, another wicked goal being scored on Tucson.
You know, Henderson now has all the momentum early and
now you just felt the Roadrunners had to play catch
up again. Luckily, they were able to respond quickly from
Kyler Yamamota, who will talk about it just a moment,
but tied up things in that game around six minutes

(05:38):
in the first period, and then we didn't see any
scoring until the third period when Yamamoto scored the go
ahead power play goal for his fifth point of the season.
He's now up to three goals and two assists on
the year. He's been a viable asset for the road
Runners in the five games that he's played this year.
He's playing out there with speed, quickness. I mean, he
has over three hundred National Hockey League games played. You

(05:59):
can really tell that that's an NHL player out there
on an American Hockey League team. But regardless, Uh, that
game was scoreless for a long time, and the Roadrunners
had so many chances in front of the net, just
weren't able to get that goal in. And you're just thinking, like, man,
when is this going to finally break for Tucson? When
is when are the goals going to come for the
road Runners? And though only one did. It was still

(06:23):
just a huge opportunity for the Roadrunners to get that victory,
especially on the power play, because we were on a
three game powerplay skid. Uh, not just from not scoring obviously,
but we just were being given the power play opportunities
as well. I said on the broadcast, only six power
play opportunities in the three games leading into Saturday.

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Fortunately the Roadrunners were given three of them. Still not
a lot, you know, that's a pretty about average. I
would say teams on average get about three power plays
per game. Tucson took full advantage of the opportunity to
score or score on the late stages at the twelve
forty three mark of that third period from so club
and Russo on the assist. With Yamamoto scoring that third

(07:07):
goal of this season, you kind of just felt like,
let's go, like we got it, we got our opportunity,
we scored our goal, and then we held on for
the win.

Speaker 1 (07:16):
It was such a The Henderson series is such a
weird series. If you think about the the third period
of the Friday game, there's five goals and then there
was three the whole the whole game on Saturday, So
it was it was really impressive how the road Owners
were able to you know, improve one of the big
issues they had last year, our last year earlier in
the season on on Saturday, where they were able to

(07:39):
hold on for that two to one lead at two
to one win after Kyler scored that second goal, because
it was you know, if that was against Texas early
in the season, you you'd expect that Henderson to come
back and score that goal. But it was a you know,
not the most high scoring game on on Saturday, turnly,
but the Roaders adjusted well and then they got the win,
and they had that impressive hold of the hold of

(08:03):
the Henderson hit, holding down Henderson to only one goal.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
Yeah, that was definitely not a two to one game
by any means. There were a lot of opportunities on
both sides. And I'm not just saying that from the shots.
I mean shots were twenty nine to twenty seven. That's
that's about maybe a little over average of a standard
hockey game. Both goaltenders looked good, Jackson stopper earning his
fifth win as a Roadrunner with twenty six saves on

(08:30):
twenty seven shots. But yeah, that was that did not
feel like a two to one game. There was so
many opportunities on both sides, even Henderson as well. There's
a lot of shots missed. I think the ice was
a bit off, if in my in my opinion, because
I saw a couple of guys falling throughout the weekend,
a couple of guys slipping behind the nets, slipping in

(08:51):
the middle of the ice, and the puck just wasn't
sitting you know, even passes were looking a bit off
as well. Still, the these family forms an awesome arena,
and I'm not blaming that, but it just felt a
little like the puck wasn't going as crisp as it
should have been. I wasn't sitting on the stick as much,

(09:12):
on all sticks as much, because again Henderson missed a
lot of wide open opportunities on their end as well.
So by any means, it did not feel like a
two to one game. Yes, the Roadrunner scoring has not
lit up the lamp in the past couple of games,
but again, you know, it's just all about the execution,
and I think the execution is just something that you know,

(09:33):
whether you're a fan or working for the team or
the coaching staff and the players, I think it's just
something we have to be a little bit more patient
on because you know, you expect so much of it
to happen with the roster that we have and the
lines that we have as well. It's a very you know,
stacked team. It's it's that first line of I believe
that the first line that was going the other night

(09:54):
was Agazino, Sokolov and Don and then that secone we
had McCartney, Pagansky and Yamamoto. I mean, those are two
really good first lines and you expect those lines to
light the lamb, but it just it's just not yet.
But it will eventually.

Speaker 1 (10:08):
You know.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
Again, this team is just too talented right now to
you know, kind of start to average under three goals
of gay. But it's gonna come eventually. But sometimes you
have those low scoring games when you win to the
one and Jackson Stabber on his other end did his job.
He stopped the pucks that he needed to stop. And
James he's putting up good numbers. He has five wins

(10:29):
in seven games so far with the team with a
five and two record, a two point two nine goals
against average and a nine to thirty say percentage, and
all of a sudden you talk about the acquisitions and
the off season moves the Roadrunners made with Soaklov and
Agazino being the top two big free agent acquisitions. But
now you have now you can start looking at Jackson

(10:50):
Stabber and start to say, like, man, he's been one
of the big key off season acquisitions as well. I'm
not saying we didn't expect that we did, but you know,
now he's he's starting to put up those numbers where
he's uh starting to get those wins for the road
Runners and he's starting to steal those kind of wins
for the road Runners as well.

Speaker 1 (11:08):
Yeah, he's the guy that coming in you you know,
expect them to have a good goal of it with
he He has some Anuto experience, had some prip some
good numbers with ice Hawks, but he's really kind of
immersed as a great you know, has a great option
in goal and he he's he's a big reason why
the Roadruns are just be just be low five hundred

(11:31):
because he's just making some playing really well, making some
great saves and put him great numbers and really giving
the support that Matt Matt Vilalta gave last year where
the Rotors could rely on him definitely to get a win.

Speaker 3 (11:47):
Yeah, and for Matthew Volalta too.

Speaker 2 (11:49):
I mean, obviously the one in five start, uh, you know,
isn't ideal and for him too, because he knows what
he's capable of. And I think for any goldtender, no
matter how many goals you allowing the game, the win
is the biggest thing. And you know, you can push
the goals against average in the same percentage aside that
one and five record is for Matthew Walalta's sake is

(12:10):
what's gonna stink to him the most. And you know,
in my opinion, there's been a lot of goals that
just have really gone unlucky. You know, we saw last
week against the Goals where that one kind of carried
off the up the door that gets the players on
and off the ice. We saw the other one a
few weeks ago where you know, just got Pope checked

(12:31):
out of Maddie stick and then scored into the back
of the net. In that Texas series, has been a
couple where just Matthew Walalta was you know, just in
the I wouldn't say the wrong position because he was
just playing the puck.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
But yeah, there's been a couple that I've gone against
his way.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
You know, the teams hasn't scored as many goals when
he's in the net as well, so you know just
that goal support for a goaltender as well is also
a crucial part of their of a record. But again,
we know Matthew Walta is going to turn things around.
No matter how long it takes, it's gonna be a
better late than ever situation. And I do think by
the time we're in the middle part of the season,
you know we're gonna look at the start and just

(13:07):
forget about it because we know what Matthew Balta is
capable of. Yes, it's gonna take him a while to
get back to five hundred for himself, but you know,
it really wasn't even until the middle of the season
last year that Matthew Walalta started putting up those numbers
and getting that goals against Savage down and that say
percentage up and start compiling the wins, especially in that
month of December. So you know, it takes a little

(13:30):
bit of time, but by no means necessary that Matthew
Valalta is just gonna start seeing the bench bore now.
No Steve Pavin and the team are still going to
rotate our goaltenders because that's what they're both here for.
And yes, Stopper has given us more of the wins
for the time being, but yeah, you know, it's all
about patience, and eventually Matthew Balalta is going to start
compiling the wins for us and start playing like the

(13:52):
elite goal turner i he is for the team, and
we're gonna start seeing those wins pile up from the
offensive side as well as part of those goals too.
So but yeah, again, it's nice to have a goaltender
just such as Jackson Stubbord for the time being until
Matthew Valta just kind of finds back his game a
little bit and uh, you know, starts making those big

(14:12):
says for the teams in those close games.

Speaker 1 (14:15):
Yeah. You one of the things I really liked in
the in the game on Friday that matt did that
he made admittedly made you a little bit nervous on
on the on the broadcast, but one of the things
I liked is that he was still able to He's
still confident enough to go out there and play the
puck far from the goal, and it was something that
made you nervous, you know, but something that I thought

(14:36):
maybe he might kind of show shot away from after
he had the the weird play where he lost the
puck this year's before that, but by the trapezoid, and
there was a there was that one game where it
was against Texas, I believe, where he misplayed the ball
the puck for a second and the goal scored. I
think it was no, it was Texas. I think it

(14:57):
was Texas. But anyway, he's still he's still confident enough
to handle the puck, move up and handle the puck
well like that, because that's one of the things that
when we first talked to Steve about on him when
he came in last year is that Steve was really
impressed with how he handles the puck and how they
can start the offense really quickly with him back there.

(15:17):
So it's it's been a situation where he's had a
lot of bad luck. You know, there was that deflected
on goal against against him on Friday, but and then
there was a you know, a bunch of goals like
that where there when I talked to Steve on before
the road trip kind of to see like kind of
trying to gauge who who who would start on the

(15:40):
Ontario game, because before that, obviously all the games were
two games series, so they just rotate. So in that game,
that's the first game where you kind of have a
clear cut number one where well, this guy's gonna start
because there's only one game. So I was kind of
trying to gauge to see who would go on and
he said that, well, we don't really have a we
don't have number one. We have too great goal and

(16:00):
on this year with Matt is that he's has yet
been getting a lot of run support, which you know,
I think that literally means there's not getting as many
goals for end to sport him, but he's also having
to face a lot of shocks. So I think that
as he progresses through this season, he will be getting
better and better. That's something they did last year where
he had a good start last year, but a lot
that was just because he was kind of on his
own starting almost every game, and so he was able

(16:22):
to work through that a lot quicker. So I think
that's something you can see early later in seasons against
more games earn his belt. He I think he probably
played through this a little kind of scuffs he's in
right now.

Speaker 2 (16:34):
Yeah, and I think the difference from last season. You know,
obviously we knew Matthew Volalta was the clear starter when
the season started because just the goaltender moves that the
road Murders made right before the season had started, when
we had Matthew Blalta and Anson Thornton to start up
the year. Thornon was still kind of developing, you know,

(16:56):
he and he still is at the moment in the EHL,
but you had to developing goaltender and a you know,
event goalie who's played in the in the league for
three seasons with Ontario, And yeah, Matthew Waltsa was a
clear cut starter last year. Going into see this season,
you you knew Maddie was still you know, the starting
caliber goalie. But with the signing of Stobber, you knew

(17:16):
that it was gonna kind of be a one A
one B situation because you know, with the numbers that
Stobber has and the signing that the Roadrunners had with
them as well, you know, that's a goaltender you don't
just not play on these back to back weekends. So
we kind of knew going into the season just as
Steve said, we have two great goaltenders. We're going to
play both of them, because a lot of teams nowadays

(17:39):
have just the two goalies, you know, because we have
so many of the back to backs, and then all
of a sudden, you have four games in like a
seven day stretch or even a six day stretch and
you have to play both of them. So I think
I think that's what Steve was just kind of saying,
you know, we don't have a clear starter. Yes, Staber
did start the single game on Wednesday, but you know,

(17:59):
you just have to have to look at the numbers
and Stobbur for the time being has the better numbers
than Matthew Vlalta. But you know, at the end of
the day, with what these two goalies bring to the team,
it's definitely not a you know, Jackson Stobber is the starter,
Matthew Valta is the backup, or vice versa, where Maddy's
the starter and Stobber is the backup. It's not like that,
I think, just depending on you know, the game situation

(18:22):
and you know, who's giving the best chance for the
Roadrunners to win at the time is maybe going to
start the first game of the back to back or
the single game right now, and again, for the time being,
it is stubbur because he has five wins, he's five
and two, two point two nine goals against average a
nine to thirty.

Speaker 3 (18:36):
Sabers says, he's putting great numbers up.

Speaker 2 (18:38):
But again, you know, even though Matthew Walalta just has
one win, you know, the goal support hasn't necessarily been
there for him just yet. And yeah, he's gone super
unlucky on a lot of goals, and sometimes that's just hockey,
and the stats don't really tell the season that he's
still having for Tucson. He's kept the Roadrunners in a
lot of games this season, they just haven't been able
to close it out. But you know, if someone's not

(19:00):
going to be happy about that record, it is going
to be Matthew Blalta. He knows that he's better. We
know that he's better. Everybody in the building knows that
he's better. And there's just no doubt that Matthew Balalta
is not going to turn around.

Speaker 3 (19:13):
He is going to turn things around.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
We know he will, and you know, before we know it,
near the midst way of the season, Tucson's going to
have the best goalie tandem hopefully going.

Speaker 3 (19:23):
Into the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (19:25):
You know, obviously Tucson at six and seven right now,
not currently in the playoffs spot, still really early to tell.
But you know, sometimes people like to say at the
end of November is when you really kind of get
a dialed in look of a team, you know, despite
what their record is. And again, this next four game
series is absolutely huge for the road Runners because if
they can turn it around this upcoming four game home stand,

(19:48):
get back to a winning record against two really good teams,
the confidence is going to be sky high going back
on the road because the road Runners play the Wranglers
in about a two to three weekend set. They play
two games this week against Calgary and then they head
on the road for two more games against the Wranglers
as well. So it's a big opportunity to get some

(20:08):
wins against one of the best teams in the league
right now.

Speaker 1 (20:12):
Yeah, obviously they changed out of players, I added a
lot of players like him, like Jackson, obviously you mentioned.
But it's still a chance for a revenge series against
the Wranglers after you know that tough, you know, tough playoff,
serious last last May. So look for the Runners to play,

(20:33):
play really well, play really hard. It's something that if
you remember a couple a couple of weeks ago, they
did Bakersfield and they swept Bakersfield, and Bakersfield is one
of the few teams I actually had the Runners number
last year. So it's a it's a different you know,
a lot of different not of new guys, but that's
something that they're gonna have a practice week to get
ready for and get sacked up for trying to get

(20:54):
revenge against the Wranglers.

Speaker 2 (20:56):
Yeah, and the road Runs even had a good record
against the Wranglers overall last year. I believe going two, one,
one and zero, that's getting three. That's getting points in
three out of four games. Duson only played the Wranglers
four times last year. They split their first series against
the Wranglers in Calgary, won a piece, and then they

(21:16):
played back at home later on in the season where
it was technically a split, but the Roadrunners lost in
overtime in one of those games, giving them the extra points.
So yeah, they had they had a pretty good overall
good record and they even split that series against the
Wranglers when Calgary was the best team in the division.
And obviously a sweep would be the biggest thing. But

(21:36):
even if Tucson was able to split this upcoming series
against Calgary, I think that's at least is still more
of a positivity, you know, because again, you you're going
against one of the best teams in the league right now,
a really hot team with a once again a really
hot goaltender in Kooleye Devin Cooley. I believe that's his
full name, and he's not even a prospect. He came
as a free agent and he's just had a phenomenal

(21:59):
start for the Wranglers. But they also still split their goaltenders.
They don't they're not having Coolly start in both games,
so uh, you know, not predicting starters at all, but
you know, if if I had to presume, uh, you know.

Speaker 3 (22:11):
It could be a Stobber versus Cooley game.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
And those are two good goaltenders having phenomenos starts for
their respectful teams. So that could be a low scoring,
very hard fought game between the Roadrunners and Wranglers. And
you know, it's a nice rest week for Tucson. They
had a couple of uh you know, the three game
road trip, lots of traveling. But now they're back home
right now with the plenty of time and chance to

(22:34):
get ready for this big series.

Speaker 1 (22:37):
It's on the kind of negative if you look at
if you're a pessimist, the Runners had you know a
little bit of trouble scoring goals last few games. But
if you're optimistic and look at it, it's like, well, if
they're going to have a tough series against Calgary where
goals hard to come by, they're already ward for that.
They already they already had a big two to one
win on Saturday. So it's a series that it's going

(23:00):
to be really interesting. It's that that home standing is
interesting thematically because it's the two fire teams and they're
both you know, top of standings, and they're both two
under all teams that the Roaders played the last couple
of years in the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (23:14):
Yeah, and the scoring is not going to be easy
in this upcoming series really, these next two games, especially
with Devin Cooley again he actually was signed as a
free agent, spent some time with the Rochester Americans last season,

(23:34):
you know, had a three seven seven goals against average
and eight nine one say percent to spend some time
in the National Hockey League as well. He's from Los Gatos, California,
and he also played with the San Jose Sharks last
year as well. I think was the first California born
goaltender to earn a win with San Jose, if I'm
not mistaken. So he spent some times in the National
Hockey League last year, signed with the Wranglers as a

(23:56):
free agent as a one point five to one goals
against that it's a nine to fifty three say percentage
with a nine to two record. I don't know what
it is with the Wranglers and just always being able
to define these diamonds in a rough when it comes
to goltending. Of course, we know all about Devin Wolf
coming as a prospect, but now they signed this free

(24:17):
agent and all of a sudden, he's having a phenomenal
season to start off. Their backup goaltender which I'm not
sure really how to pronounce at the moment, which I'm
sure i'll get over get down eventually, but their backup
has a three point seven goals against savage and a
eight to four say percentage, still with a three to

(24:38):
one on run record, which is pretty good for those
kind of stats. So with that being said, yeah, the
Wranglers don't have the one A, one B. They have
a starter and a backup. And you know whether we'll
see Coolly go both games for the Wranglers. At least
that first one is going to be a tough one
for the road Runners to score on him.

Speaker 1 (24:58):
Yeah, it's a Calgary's really immerdersed as kind of a
goalie factory. I remember last last spring, everyone was saying, like, wait,
why is Dustin Wolf still in the HL? He's just
playing so well, you know, and Adrian kind of said that, Well,
they didn't like, you know, whatever, they didn't like I
played or whatever, they didn't like his technique, whatever, But
you see now in the NHL how well he's doing.

(25:20):
So it's a it's a team that just keeps producing
goalies after goallater goalie. Even talking about Calgary, Calgary and Stockton, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (25:28):
I know, it's like about time that did I say
Dustin Devin Wolf Dustin Wolf. Uh, it's about time that
we uh don't see Dustin Wolf anymore, uh, you know
in the AHL, because uh, you know, not only what
we remember from last year's playoffs, uh you know, with
the way he played, Uh you know, he deserved it.

(25:49):
He's always earned that call itton the National Hockey League. Uh,
but you know, you, yeah, give credit where credits due.
The Wranglers seem to find ways to make it easy
for their goaltenders, because obviously it's not all on Devin Coolie. Wranglers,
I've always had a really good defense in front of
their goaltenders as well. Maybe they you know, allow whether
they allow a lot of shots or not, they always

(26:09):
block out the perimeters and you know, take away those
lanes of passing for their debtminders. And yeah, it's not
gonna be any easier for the road Runners for this
upcoming series and really this upcoming four game homestand for
themselves as well, even the Coachella Valley Firebirds, even though
they have a less Deska now and Nik Coco now

(26:29):
in net nik Coco has a five to zero record,
two point six to one goals against Savage eight nine
three say percentage that he hasn't faced a lot of shots,
but then a less Deska three point three to three
goals against Savage three and five records, So you know,
their goaltenders not as productive as maybe what we're accustomed
to to also, but uh, Coachella Valley is still one

(26:50):
of those teams that's always been hard to beat. A
Tucson actually has some success against the Coachella Valley Firebirds
last year, going four to three, zero to one. Uh
so technically getting again, it's technically the series being tied,
but the Roadrunners had more of the points and now
they'll go against their rivals. Uh this is next week's series,

(27:11):
but it's still a big two game series for Tucson
before Thanksgiving.

Speaker 1 (27:16):
Yeah, Cochille's a team that you know they've done. They
play really well on those first couple of years with
after becoming expansion team and loading their team up with
a bunch of veterans and being less reliant on prospects
as a team normally in the hl IS. But so
you expect them to kind of drop off a little bit.
But they're still up there there. They're third in the
division right now, but they have a game in hand

(27:37):
on I'm San Jose and so they're two points back,
so they could usually be be second on place. And
so it's a it's developed into a nice ribberry with Coachella.
You know, there's a you know, it's a I think
Brett would say back in the day that they were
the closest team to the Tucson now and they really
become a good rival and it be great to see them.

(27:59):
It's kind of n fortunately that's during the during the week,
you know, a weekday series, because less people will be
able to come and see it. But maybe you'll see
more people on the Wednesday night because of Thanksgiving Eve
as opposed to what you usually see on Wednesday night.
But hopefully it'll get some good, good crowds out there
for that series.

Speaker 2 (28:19):
Yeah, I kind of wish they switched it right, like
you should have made the Coachella Valley series on the
Friday Saturday and then maybe the regulars the upcoming week.

Speaker 3 (28:27):
But yeah, I hope to see all the fans for
both games.

Speaker 2 (28:31):
We have Faith and Family Night coming up this Friday,
and then Saturday Hockey Fights Cancer Night, so that's this weekend,
and then yeah, next week Tuesday Wednesday match, we have
the Thanksgiving game on Wednesday night before Thanksgiving, So yeah,
a big week for Tuesson. Currently sitting at six and
seven right now in the standings. James, obviously, I don't

(28:51):
like to compare ourselves to any other team, but even
Coachella Valley too, where bits you know, slow to start
the year, they were at five and five, and then
all of a sudden they win a couple in a row,
and now they're sitting at a good spot right now
at eight and five. Havn't a wonder last five in
the row, so they are technically a couple of games

(29:11):
under five hundred for themselves. So you kind of expect
the same for the Roadrunners hopefully soon sitting at six
and seven right now, because you know, again all it
takes is, you know, getting one win, and the road
Runers did that. They got the win on Henderson and
then now they just need to start stringing together a
couple more. We haven't had that big winning streak just

(29:32):
yet to start the season. Unfortunately, we've gone our first
big losing streak with the three game skid. We broke
it and now we're just going to start trying to
look for a win streak against a couple of really
good teams.

Speaker 1 (29:43):
Yeah, there's just the division in the league. I keeps saying,
this is so good. I mean, you look at Coachelle
there in third place and they've won those five games
in a row, but their golden count was only plus one,
so the Runners are minus five. So if you look
at it, just a few and obviously there was empty
goals and the Runners given up, but you look at
the pup goes a little bit differently, bounces a little

(30:05):
bit differently than the Runners are in third place probably,
So it's just they're they're a team that's getting really close.
Last year, they they got to that second place in
the in the in the division and played really well
got that home series because they won so many one
close games and that's the thing that you saw Matt

(30:27):
really do really well with where he was able to
hold the hold the fourth down and they're able to
hold on and to get that close to close win.
So that's something that something look look for that they're
really close. There's so many they got so many chances
over the weekend or or the series over the road
trip that they're getting close. And that's that's promising that
they're getting a lot of good chances and they're just

(30:48):
hitting off the post or getting a deflection or getting
a good save, and so something that it's just the
March Firs so so so tight, so so tough in
this division that you see the runner a few players go, go,
go the opposite way and telling they're down the eighth
place out of ten when they could be up there
maybe third place or somethe.

Speaker 2 (31:09):
Yeah, you know, Luckily for twoson, the division is you know,
obviously it's still good. It's still an overall very talented division.
But a lot of teams right now are you know,
not a lot of games over five hundred to start
the year. Obviously Kylgary Wranglers, that's a given at twelve three,
one to zero. San Jose's only four games over five

(31:29):
hundred at nine and five, Coachella Valley only three games
at eight and five. And then you get into the
teams that haven't really found their their big win streaks yet,
including Twoson. You have the Eagles at seven to six
oh to one, Bakersfield six four two and one, Abbotsford
six to eight oh one, Ontario six and seven, Twoson
six and seven. Then we have two four and Knights

(31:50):
with the goals and the Silver Knights. So the entire
specific division a division. Again, we expected to really all
these teams to have a lot of wins to start
the year. It's been it's figuring it out and it's
been a you know, slower start for a lot of
these really talented teams. Colorado, I'll give the benefit of
the doubt because they've had a ton of injuries and
for them to be seven and six is actually pretty

(32:12):
solid for them. But Ontario at six and seven right now,
Tucson at six and seven right now, abbots Ford at
six and eight to start off as well, you know,
just something we're not fully expecting. With all of the
teams that I mentioned all had winning records last year
as well, so you know, a bit of a slower
start for a lot of these teams. But again, I

(32:33):
think eventually, when you start getting into the November and December,
a lot of these teams are gonna be a lot
harder to beat. And you know, that's that's the time
the Roadrunners need to start figuring that out, you know,
and start getting those ones together too, because you just
don't want these teams to all start getting hot and
then you're still remaining cold and then all of a sudden,
you go into the month of January and you're still

(32:55):
in eighth place in the outside looking in spot, and
you don't want that for Tucson, So it's a big
opportunity right now for the Roadrunners to try to get
the wins together first, and a lot of these other
teams do.

Speaker 1 (33:09):
Yeah, it's a division that you know, they've always been
really competed the last last few years, but usually at
the top you see the division winners, division second place
team there at the top of the conference too. So
it's it's right now. It's it's the point where Calgary's
really far ahead. They're twenty five points, whereas second place
San Jose is eighteen. But it's a situation where everyone's

(33:30):
really beating up on each other. I mean you look
at the last ten games. Runners are five and five,
Ontario is five and five, Colorado five and five, you
mentioned them, San Jose six and four. Everyone's around that
five hundred area last ten games. Because everyone's really beating
up on each other. It's a you know, keep saying
it like I sound like a broken record, but it's
a really tough division. And but at a certain point

(33:52):
you're going to see the top teams pull away a
little bit when they get on those instincts you keep
talking about. So it's a it's a point where you
really need to every points so important. Every game is
tough and it's just gonna be an exciting stretch as
we'll move into December.

Speaker 2 (34:09):
Yeah, and James, don't forget last season, the Regulars were
in first place probably up until around December, and then
they completely fell apart, while the Roadrunners had their best
stretches in December and January, and then they took over
the top spots, even at being in one first place
at one point. And then the Roadrunners wouldn't say fell off,

(34:32):
but they kind of lost a couple of games, and
then Coachella Vallee went on that like ten game point
streak or something, and then Tucson just couldn't catch up.
So all it takes is like those streaks of games
where you know, maybe even like a seven game point
streak or something to and you know, again, this division
is so tight. A win streak for Tucson can put
them from eighth place easily to like third place or something.

(34:54):
So again, unfortunately, the Roadrunners went two and three in
a pretty favorable schedules stretch with Ontario. Oh sorry, with
two against San Diego, Ontario and then the two against
the Henderson Silver Knights. But now you have to kind
of double down a bit and try to get some
big wins together against two really really talented teams. All right, James,

(35:15):
let's get to our interviews. So Chase Clemens came on
the trip with us this past weekend, and Henderson Chase Clemens,
our media relations and communications coordinator, kind of did with
I do when I went on the road trips with
the season or with the team last season, grabbing those
postgame interviews and intermission interviews with Zach Startini, one of

(35:38):
them coming with Kyler Yamamoto after the game. I played
this at our Roadrunners post game on the Saturday night victory,
but we'll also play it for you right here as
Chase Clemens caught up with Kyler Yamamoto after he scored
his second and third goals of the season, including his
second go ahead goal of the year, to give the
Roadrunners that two to one lead.

Speaker 4 (35:58):
Kyler, how important was it to win this game and
end the road trip on a high note?

Speaker 5 (36:04):
Yeah, that's big actually on three game side, So it's
big to get that one.

Speaker 1 (36:07):
Out of the way, and only looking out from here.

Speaker 4 (36:11):
And Kyler, you were in perfect position on your go
ahead gold to the right of the net. Can you
walk me through what you saw on that play?

Speaker 5 (36:18):
No, Yeah, we drew up a play you know, worked
out in Soksman an unbelievable play you know, slap shot
pass right back door and could be more wide open.
So I was, uh, you know it's a great play
play by everybody on the edge.

Speaker 4 (36:29):
And Kyler, you have three goals for five points in
the last four games. What's working for you out there
and your line mates?

Speaker 3 (36:38):
Sorry, a player player game.

Speaker 5 (36:40):
Obviously, the coach puts together a good plan before every
game and you know, just try to execute it every game.
You know it's working or now, thanks.

Speaker 4 (36:46):
So much for your time again and congrats on the
on two goals.

Speaker 2 (36:50):
So James Kyler Yamamoto five points in five games. Uh,
just watching him out there, he's he's played with plenty
of speed, he has great hands, and you know he's
had he's played over three hundred National Hockey League games
and you can really tell out there, you know it's
an NHL player playing on an h L team.

Speaker 1 (37:11):
Yeah, he's got such a I was surprised to have that.
He had such a great game and it's had such
a good good rip broachrip because he you look at him,
he's like, wow, that's that skill set. You can just
tell he's he's he's a kind of refugee from then
NHL is someone who's gonna be he's gonna be back
up there pretty soon. And he's a guy who blongs
up there. But it's great for the Runners to have him.

(37:32):
He's a and not only that, but he's a guy
who when they when they brought him in, when they
when he cleared waivers a game he came to Tucson.
He's there who has some experience already and in the division,
having played for Bakersfield, you know, about fifty games. So
he's he's a guy who has that experience and he's
in the in the league, you know, in the in
the American League, in the division, but also he has

(37:52):
that experience in a h NHL. So he's a he's
a great guy to have and seems like a great
teammate and he's a really really really skilled and he
put up a couple of really impressive goals on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (38:03):
Yeah, and it's all about the situation, right, Like obviously
every guy on this team wants to be in the
National Hockey League and you know, be placed on waivers
and not knowing where you're going to end up in
a matter of days. I'm sure was tough for Yamamoto,
and then he passed waivers and was reassigned to the
American Hockey League.

Speaker 3 (38:24):
But you know, if he.

Speaker 2 (38:26):
Could either be a situation for Yamamoto, whether he's maybe
not playing as much with the Utah Hockey Club being
a scratch every game, or he's placed on waivers and
grabbed by another team where they don't play him, or
they send them down to their American League Hockey team
where maybe it's not as best of a situation or

(38:47):
a best of an opportunity. And I think this is
still the best for Yamamoto. You know, he was sent
down to a great team, a great coaching staff, a
great team that's amazing at developing players. And I'm not
saying yamam Moto needs to develop right now. Again, He's
twenty six, He's played plenty of games in the National
Hockey League, He's an NHL player. You know, just the
situation right now with all the death not only Utah has,

(39:10):
but with the road Runners having as well. You know,
this gives Kyler Yamamoto the best chance to get games
under his belt, show his skills set again. Five points
in five games, and you know, we talked last week
about you know, who's the next guy to get called up?
You know, is it Josh Stone he two goals in
seven games where Josh Stones kind of kind of finding

(39:31):
his game a little bit as of late.

Speaker 3 (39:33):
Is it Igor Sokolov who has the.

Speaker 2 (39:35):
Fifteen points this season and he leads to the team
in goals and assists. Or is it Kyler Yamamoto, a
guy who's already with the Utah Hockey Club and has
played some games with the Utah Hockey Club as well.
He's placed on waivers, but obviously he can be called
up back at any given time. So again it gives
the Utah Hockey Club options on who to call up.

(39:56):
But for the time being, like we say, with every
on this roster, whether they get called up or not,
we're gonna enjoin them while we have him. And Yamamoto
is just one of those guys right now for Tucson
who's helping the team win in a in a time
that the team needs wins right now. As you know,
the last two victories, Yamamoto has the game winning goal.

Speaker 1 (40:17):
Yeah not not just saying that Yamalot has the great,
great experience playing a bunch of NHILD games, but was
also played for big teams and the Oilers and the Kraken.
So he's the guy who he's gatined this opportunity to
guess some more time I'm playing playing in the American League.
But he's a guy who is making the most of
the opportunity. He didn't have that shock, that really quick

(40:40):
start that that don't have when he came in. But
now he's coming in playing really well, putting in great numbers,
and and he's already passed has five games of Tucson
and when he had three for Utah. So he's a
guy who is really getting the experience back.

Speaker 2 (40:57):
Yeah, and he's getting a lot of experience now here
with Tucson for the time being. Another interview that Chase
Scott after the game. Jackson Staber, We talked all about
him earlier on this show. Five and two record two
point five nine goals against average and a nine to
thirty save percentage to start off his season with Twocson,
he's been the viable goaltender for the Roadrunners, getting five

(41:21):
of the six wins that Tucson has right now. Again,
Matthew Willlto will turn things around, but for the time
being until he does. It's been huge for the Roadrunners
to have a goaltender like Stabber to help the team
scrap a good amount of wins together. And Chase also
is caught up with Jackson Stauber after his fifth win
of the season on Saturday.

Speaker 4 (41:42):
I'm joined by Roadrunners goalie Jackson Stauber, who's the second
star of the night. Jackson twenty six saves on twenty
seven shots. Congrats on the win. That was your fourth
and the last five. How would you explain your strong
play over the last couple of weeks.

Speaker 6 (42:00):
I gotta get a lot of credit to the guys
in front of me. You know, they're doing a great
job of, you know, letting me see pucks and clearing
out any rebounds. So first and foremost credit to them.
But I just feel like I'm putting myself in good
positions to not be scrambling too much and getting hit
by a lot of pucks.

Speaker 4 (42:16):
And the team's defense tonight and just the game overall,
it seemed like a really really tight game, almost playoff, Like,
what did you see out there in terms of pace
of play and your team's defense.

Speaker 6 (42:28):
Yeah, I think you're spot on. I think it was
really high temple, a lot of back and forth action,
but really tight checking hockey as well. It was a
really great game, you know, for November, yet it felt
like a playoff game.

Speaker 4 (42:40):
And I know overall the road trip maybe didn't go
as hoped, but huge bounce back win tonight. How important
was this win and how can the team build off
of this going into next week, next week's matchup against
first place Calgary.

Speaker 6 (42:54):
Yeah, we obviously would have liked to have picked up
some more points here, but to salvage you win on
this road trip was huge and it gives us kind
of some momentum going in the next weekend, and you know,
we'll have a good week of practice here hopefully, you know,
get better in some areas and come ready to play Friday.

Speaker 4 (43:09):
Jackson, thanks so much for your time. I'll let you
get out here and enjoy the win.

Speaker 6 (43:12):
Thanks appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (43:13):
I've heard it well spoken, Jackson stobbers.

Speaker 2 (43:16):
You know, again, the team had wished they gotten some
more points together, but you know, salvaging to win is
a good way to put it. You know, the Roadrunners
got it together for the last game. It was a
tight one, felt like a playoff atmosphere. I don't know
if you heard my goal called James on that Kylie
Yamamoto go ahead, but that one just felt good. It
felt good for Tucson, you know, after what it's been

(43:39):
happening the last few games where the Roadrunners were just
so close to scoring and so many chances and just
weren't able to get it in the back of the nets.
That one felt good and it was just an overall
feel good win for Tucson. But again, it's gonna be short.
We enjoyed it shortly for a short amount of time,
but now it's a big game against Calgary. But yeah,

(44:00):
I would just felt like a good win for Tucson.

Speaker 1 (44:03):
Yeah, you have the you know, you're you're obviously knew
the calling pro hockey, but you already have the the
gold calls down already that they're really really fun, really memorable,
and I like to they're fun to listen to. But
you go back to the game on Saturday, it's really
just a really impressive forms you think about it because yeah,
they scored in the first min min five seconds, so

(44:25):
after that you really look at it and that was
kind of an unfortunate goal, kind of quick kind of
random goal. But if you look at it, Jackson he
had a pretty much fifty eight minutes of shut out hockey,
and that that was something that of Henderson. They had
eleven shots in the third period, so it's something that

(44:45):
you you you feel that pressure, you feel that feel
that excitement where he was able to shut them down
and they were able to pull out and get that win.
It was really really impressive outing.

Speaker 2 (44:56):
Yeah, and uh, you know, no, uh, no blame on
Maxie Zuber whatsoever. But that goal that Henderson scored with
Stober made the safe and the rebound kind of went
up in the air and went off of Zuber and
then into the net. So and again no blame on
Zuber whatsoever. That's just hockey. And you know Zuber was
trying to play good defense there. But Henderson scored a

(45:18):
fluke of a goal, So I mean, without that, Jackson
Stober could have maybe easily gotten a shutout.

Speaker 3 (45:23):
So yeah, that's a good point.

Speaker 2 (45:24):
James Stober played fifty nine minutes of shutout hockey after
Heatherston scored first on a fluke goal and maybe thought
that they were gonna run away with it early on,
but Tucson faced the opposition. They responded quickly with Kyli
Yamamoto's second goal of the season at the time, and
then they scored the huge go ahead power play goal,

(45:46):
snapping the three game losing streak and also snapping the
three game power playless streak power play goalless streak as well,
because again, they just haven't been given those power play
opportunities at the moment. So he know that could be
frustrating for any team. You feel like you're playing quick,
you're playing fast, and for some reason the team's not

(46:06):
just giving you, not taking penalties whatsoever. So that's why
the goal also felt really good because we had finally
been given another power play opportunity. Lay Moore took a
slashing lame. Moore had a really good game as well.
He played his first game in six matches. He was
all over the ice for Tucson's blue line. He took
us slashing in the middle part of that third period,

(46:27):
and then the Roadrunners scored a big power play goal
to win the game two to one. So our last interview,
Chase Clemens caught up with our head coach Steve Potvin
after the game. Great job by the coaching staff and
you know, keeping the team up and keeping the the
locker room vibes up as well after a couple of
tough games for Tucson and to find a way to

(46:49):
get a big two to one victory over the nights.
Chase Clements also catching up with head coach Steve Potvin.

Speaker 4 (46:58):
I'm joined by Roadrunners head coach Deeve Potvin coach. How
important was it to get the win tonight and end
the road trip on a high note?

Speaker 7 (47:06):
Well, it was, of course really important to you know,
it's amazing when you you know, you come out and
play a pretty good game the night before and you
don't get rewarded. You know, sometimes you can start to
really judge and you know, do things that are a
little separate than what's necessary. And what I liked about
our group tonight is they just were patient with their

(47:26):
game and typically when things aren't going your way and listen,
we had a lot of scoring chances tonight and there
was a lot of opportunity to really seal the game,
especially in that second period. A lot of times you can,
you know, get frustrated and then start to look for
calls and reasons to get upset, and a lot of
times in the past what we've done is lose our

(47:47):
emotional control, turn the referees against us a little bit,
and then we get behind in calls and then we
have to really work an uphill battle to get the victory. Tonight,
we kept our composure all night and we were able
to keep our collective mindset the right way. We gained
the respect to the referees, we got the calls, we

(48:08):
played through checks with our skates, and we're able to
play our system all the way through to the end.
So I give so much credit to the guys, and listen,
last night, they just took control of the team. They
asked the coaches, the trainers, everybody just to honestly, they
needed to spend some time together and hash things out.

(48:29):
And you can see that they played as a team that.

Speaker 4 (48:33):
I and coach I know overall this three game road
trip record wise, maybe you didn't go exactly how you wanted.
But how does the team build from here and carry
the momentum into next weekend against Calgary.

Speaker 7 (48:46):
Well, I think every time you play you bring a
lesson with you, whether you win or you lose. It's
very evident our team has to be through the collective
and everybody has to be on the same page, and
we have to reason with ourselves to be to keep
our emotional control and be able to handle situations properly

(49:07):
in times of need. And look at there's a lot
of you know, distractions happening. There's guys in and out
of the lineup constantly, and what we're asking is for
the guys to be the guys that aren't playing to
be able to understand what the players are going through
so that when they come in there's continuity that they
can just step right in and understand the emotion and

(49:28):
you know, what was what's necessary for the future. So
I think it's important that we understand everybody's going to
be involved in this process and it's you know, the
next man up, so to speak, and there might be
guys in and out, but operating within one mindset will
be vastly important for our team.

Speaker 4 (49:47):
Coach, thanks so much for your time. As always, I'll
let you get out of here and enjoy this one.

Speaker 1 (49:52):
I appreciate it.

Speaker 7 (49:52):
We're gonna enjoy this one exactly.

Speaker 2 (49:58):
Good interview with Steve Poppin with Chase Clemens James. That
was a good way Steve put it. You know, it's
uh with the lack of the calls. You know, you
kind of battling the referees a little bit too in
that match, and you know, pop Vin and the players
didn't get too frustrated. They weren't going after it with
the refs, and then eventually they start earning the calls
to uh you know, again going back to that lame

(50:20):
more slash, maybe if Steven the players had passed the
reps a little bit for with the no calls, maybe
the Roadblinners aren't even given that power play opportunity to
uh score in that third period. So again, phenomenal job
by the coaching staff, great job by the players. You know,
three games skids are not easy for everyone, especially early
on in the season, because the expectations are just so

(50:41):
high for the team right now. Uh you know, talk
to a couple of guys before the game and they're
just like, it's time to overturn this. Let's get the
sale rolling, Let's let's get the first win tonight. They
got the first one, and now it's time to get
some together for this upcoming series.

Speaker 1 (50:58):
It's I was really impressed how they came out and
that all that came out, how they ended up I'm
playing at their game because you know, they kind to
give up that first goal pretty quickly. But they had
a really impressive performance and at their game because they're
very composed, they're very uh, you know, they're very poised.
I mean they It was a game that there wasn't
early on, There wasn't a lot of opportunities for penalties

(51:21):
or power plays because there it just wasn't what it
was just one of those games where there was a
lot of penalties. But there were some definitely some parts
where it's like, well, that's kind of weird. You kind
of expected Henderson to get a penalty on that play,
but they didn't. They didn't, and the Runners kept kept playing,
they kept poise, kept playing their game, and eventually they
got the win. But it's also impressive because if you
think about it, there was such a devastating way to

(51:43):
end the game on Friday with you gave up three
goals in the last like three minutes. You have two
empty net goals. And although one the empty goals was
a nuts crazy one from across the ice on through traffic,
so kind of an atypical empty net goal, but and
then they gave it, gave up one and that came
back in towards the end, but they responded really well.
I'm looking, scored a goal in the waiting seconds of

(52:06):
the game. They and they responded again on Saturday. So
it's a team that they don't really get down so much,
it seems when they have adversity, at least lately, and
they're able to come back and be poised. And really,
if you think about at their game, it didn't at
their game the road trip, I didn't feel like that
one of the games where we snap a losing streak,

(52:27):
we're just kind of exploding score a bunch of goals.
But it's a game where they where they look like
a veteran team that's that's used to winning, and they
came out and they won a hard fought game and
supposed to kind of exploding and overcoming a losing streak,
that they're able to do that, able to get that win,
playing really well.

Speaker 2 (52:46):
Yeah, big win for Tucson six and seven right now,
eighth in the Pacific Division, and it's just a new
opportunity for the team to get a couple of wins together,
maybe hopefully get all four wins against some of the
top teams in the AHL's Pacific Division starting this weekend
at the Tucson Arena on Friday and Saturday. Well, James,

(53:06):
