back of a cop car. He goes, I want to
write a song called fell in Love in the back
of a cop car, and Keith Urban heard it later
at the Grammys and changed My.

Speaker 2 (00:15):
Life, Episode four ninety seven. Matt Jenkins. So I like Matt.
I don't know if I was gonna like him. I'm
glad he didn't stand up when I walked in. I'm
being honest, very tall, yeah, six'. FOUR i appreciate him
sitting down and not making me feel less of a.
Man and not only, that when we took a picture
at the, END i, said, hey we should stand up

(00:35):
BECAUSE i like the lighting a bit better BECAUSE i
was kind of washing us out when we were sitting.
Down and THEN i remember he was six y, four
AND i, said maybe this will be the last one
that we sit. For matt has written a, ton a
ton of big. Songs he won The Triple Play, award
which he talks, about which is three number ones in
the same. YEAR i remember being With matt and his.

(00:56):
Brother we've had his brother on two, yeah And Jordan
davis And jordan's Brother jacob right when they won for
By dirt we were all back at THE cmas just
kind of hanging out and it was kind of cool
because it was two brothers and two brothers that had
written that Song song of The.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
Year super.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Cool so big fan Of Matt, jenkins but we waited
to bring him in until now Because i'm hosting this
music night live From, nashville which he is playing at
and playing some of his big. Songs so it is
a live songwriter round From, nashville but in movie theaters
all across the, country and it's. Live it's not like a.
MOVIE i was talking to my wife about it last

(01:33):

BEFORE i hope people, come and if a ton, do
we'll do it, again and if none. Do you, know
we took a big, swing BUT i like taking big.
Swings So Matt jenkins is one of the people they're
going to play. Songs he talks about what songs he's
gonna play during this. Too But Brett, james who we've
had on the show, before who Did Jesus take The

(02:15):
Will he has a bunch of. Songs Kelly archer and she's,
like sleep with, You Brett. Young she has a lot
of hits. Too obviously they wouldn't be on, this but
they've written over forty number ones, altogether and so it's a.
Concert it's a storytelling. Experience it's about the creative process behind.
It if you listen to this, PODCAST i think you'll

(02:35):
like this show because that's what that. Is that's what
we would do, here but we would get sued for
putting music on the. Podcast, BASICALLY i hope you come
get tickets at music night dot com and we'll put
the information down on the bottom here music night Dot.
Com but wanted to mention. That and it's not even
that we Had matt on just for. This we would
have had him on anyway, before but we just wanted

(02:57):
to make sure we put this up at a time
where it made. Sense did you go back to twenty twenty,
three or just type In Josh, Jenkins Bobby, Cash chicken
hear his. Brother his brother was in a band THAT
i used to. Love can you remember the?

Speaker 1 (03:10):

Speaker 1 (03:16):
Me, Hey.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Eddie So Matt jenkins is on this, episode But Josh
jenkins is his. Brother Josh jenkins was in a trio
And Josh hjenkins big songwriter in. Town you're gonna know the.
Band when we were At Emmy, television we played them
all the. Time it was a, trio A texas, trio A.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
Texas country music triom h Uh Reckless Kelly, nope, okay
so oh oh Oh Cross Nannian, Ragweed no a. TRIO
i Thought Cross Carenadian ragweed WAS i think that more
because it was Like Randy.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Cross and it doesn't matter What i'm talking about them
three letters, there substant three letters would be, there, uh
not even an, acronym but people would just say they're
three letters is what it stood?

Speaker 1 (03:55):
FOR whoa three? Letters?

Speaker 2 (03:58):
Dude you're taking me back right. Now the first letter
is A. G you were a producer of this network
SO i. WAS i, was but there were a lot
of bands and, yeah BUT i loved this.

Speaker 4 (04:07):
Band you did loved him G r G R oh
they got, nothing really, NO i got. Nothing and the
fact that you loved this.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Loved him and when he came in When josh were Doing.
Matt but When josh came, IN i was, like oh my,
GOSH I Green River.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Ordinates oh, yeah, OKAY i remember the. Name they were so.
Legit did they ever come into the? Studio it.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
EMMY i don't. Know they came into my heart. Though
But matt talks, about you, know when his, brother younger
brother moved to town after he did G R, O
matt had a record. Deal he talks about that and
how he didn't have a record deal after a. WHILE
i loved the. EPISODE i haven't Texted, Mike and If
matt listened to, THIS i really don't care at this
point BECAUSE i Like. MATT i feel like. Whatever there
was no parking in my house because we had like

(04:55):
somebody that was cleaning the hun day because we had
A hunday shoot that. Day we we had the. Dog
we have somebody that comes and cleans our dogs like
every three weeks that they have a mobile, pet so
that was. Blocking there was nowhere to park And matt
has a huge, truck and just maybe it Wasn't. Matt
maybe it was a gap with them parked it like
right in the middle of the house like butt out
where nobody could get. Through AND i was, like my

(05:16):
Hou's amazon was a drop on packages and he was,
like there's no. Parking SO i hope you enjoyed the.
EPISODE i. DID i really Like. Matt he was a ballplayer. Too,
yeah makes sense if you're six or, four you got
to kind of be a, ballplayer right or just you're
asked all the, time why aren't you a? Ballplayer, Yes
matt Kay jenkins loved. It please come Watch Music, Night

(05:36):
Music night dot. Com and now let's get going with the.
Episode how you doing, man, good good.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
Brother thanks for having. Me we're taping this at one.

Speaker 2 (05:45):
Pm so what do you have any sort of day
when you have something at one like did you write
it all?

Speaker 1 (05:50):
Today? No block? Today? Off you know it can look,
different you, know obviously one of the freedoms of being
a songwriter is you Can you, know it's. Funny when
you moved to, town it used to be like everybody
should up at Ten road at ten and As i've
gotten you, know been here, longer the day moves back
a little. Bit usually started, eleven but blocked off, today
but usually get going about. Eleven sometimes it'll puss the.
Afternoon but isn't that? Crazy like the. Joke we started

(06:14):
at the butt crack of, Eleven and WHEN.

Speaker 2 (06:16):
I sat, DOWN i was trying to think the last
TIME i saw. You but THEN i see your brother
AND i get not, confused but, YEAH i mean you got,
guys do LOOK i think all?

Speaker 1 (06:24):
Together it was A.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Cma, yes, right we're back in that little mid fancy
room where people get to go and eat, food but
it's been touched by other, people so it's not fully.
Fancy and it was right when you guys had you had, won,
yes by, dirt.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
Such a COOL i was thinking about this, interview AND
i was thinking about that moment with. You we you,
know we've met in the, past you, know in passing
a couple of. Times BUT i was just thinking about that. Memory,
winning you, know the highlight of my, life one of the
highlights of my life career songwriting wives was winning you,
know by dirt with with those boys and going backstage
and you, Know luke comes off stage and high five
IN us and then going back there and then hanging

(06:57):
in the green room with you And jordan And jacob
and just celebrating back. There so that's pretty. Quecial is that?
Highlight is that the public facing highlight of your? Career?
YEAH i think. So there's been like some personal. Highlights you,
KNOW i had a triple play one. Year we have you,
know sort of industry. THINGS i, want what were the
three in what? Year? Shoot it Was, confession set in
the world On? Fire and, shoot you're going to do

(07:18):
this to? Me maybe where It's i'm trying to, think,
no Cop. CAR i don't know HOW.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
I know all your, songs BUT i don't know the
years as In, yeah i'd have to.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
LOOK i know it's those. Two i'm trying to think
what the third one.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Is what's the rule on the triple? Play they have
to be written in the same year or releasing hit
number one in the same.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Year you. KNOW i think that the rules have evolved
a little bit where now they'll they'll include like hot
country number, ones and but back WHEN i did, it
you had to have three number ones on the radio
in a calendar.

Speaker 2 (07:41):
Year which it didn't matter when they were written because
they could have written three year ye right, Exactly so
if there were number one on the, calendar got.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
It and for, me you, KNOW i remember going Into
Tim debwall's, office great, songwriter producer Ran Arista records, forever
and he had a triple play on the on the you,
know on his, shelf AND, i you, know growing up
here like in, Town you're, like, hey that's the dream
to win one of, those and SO i would say
that that's one of the. Highlights and then obviously winning
UH Cma song of The, year you, know just to

(08:09):
do it with my brother and The Davis boys on
the song that we wrote is gonna be hard to be.
Topped and that same year we WON Nsai song of The,
year which is you, know the fellow peers in town
vote for their favorite song of the. Year to win
there was really special, too and my. Parents it was
at the rhyme and my parents got to come in
And i'm you, know our history with our dad being
a songwriter growing, up just to him to be in

(08:30):
the house that night was really, special but hard to
top THE Cma song of The, YEAR i.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
Forgot now it's all coming, back BUT i Forgot jacob And.
Jordan yes it was it was brother and Brother crimes
that wrote.

Speaker 1 (08:40):
Songs, yes that's. Cool and you know what's cool is you,
know we can get into that more. Later but what's
really cool IS i heard the only other number one
written by two sets of. Brothers you, know the song
red solo cut let, Me oh, SORRY i gave how
are you gonna?

Speaker 2 (08:54):
ASK i?

Speaker 1 (08:54):
Know so that be The warren.

Speaker 2 (08:56):
Brothers and THEN i know And jim BECAUSE i written
a bunch Of Jim.

Speaker 1 (09:01):
JIM i don't Know jim's brother, Though. Brett, yeah, Sorry
i'll teach you up.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
There you, did AND i THINK i would have got,
there but you gave me no time to answer the.
Question that's the worst game Show i've ever been. On,
YEAH i.

Speaker 1 (09:13):
DIDN'T i didn't know.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
That.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
Yeah, cool little fun.

Speaker 2 (09:15):
Fact another the little fun fact about that song is
that they basically just used the work tape for that.
Song tob we just sang over it wow because that
you Hear jim in the. Background that's him when they
were just making the.

Speaker 1 (09:25):
Demo it's a. Cool, yeah. Brilliant, yeah it's way better
than you.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
Guys, yeah that's the best, one it is for. Sure
how often do you write with your brother a? Lot
was it ever a thing where you didn't.

Speaker 1 (09:37):
For a, while you, know growing up in you know In,
Texas like we grew up in a super musical, household
and there was so much. Music, actually when you would
call our, house the answer machine would we would like
record ourselves singing together on the answer. Machine so we
just grew up playing music, together but never really. Wrote
and then, note you, know he went. Up he was
in a pop rock band and Traveled, america AND i

(09:59):
was a, fan, yeah of his. BAND i told him that.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
ONE i was, like, MAN i used to work at
A tv, station a MUSIC tv, network and that's WHERE
i kind of fell in love with.

Speaker 1 (10:06):
Them, Yeah AND i remember when he was in, HERE
i was, like, DUDE i was a big. Fan, Yeah
and they opened up for you, know Switch foot And
Goo Goo dolls and all these cool, things and that
band kind of wrapped AND i, said you got to
come To. Nashville so he, came and then we really,
started you, know writing, more and then you, know as
time's gone, on we've written more and, more and then
it's really. Cool we kind of partnered With jordan on
his first, record and it's been really special to write

(10:29):
a lot really focused on The jordan. Thing but we,
right we actually wrote this, week So i'd say a
couple times a.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
Month was there ever a time, though where if he's
just moving to, town, like we're not going to write
together BECAUSE i don't want people to think That i'm
getting you rights because you're just my. Brother was that
ever a conversation like you didn't want him to feel
like or you want other people to feel like since
he was your, brother he was getting a bunch of great.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
Rights, yeah you, KNOW i, MEAN i, OBVIOUSLY i think
we've allowed each other to have enough space in our.
CAREER i think that's some you, know The warren brothers
right every right to get. TOGETHER i can't do. That
SO i think we've let each other have enough space
and we would co. Write but when he moved to,
TOWN i actually introduced him To shane, mcinally it's a
pretty good, introduction And shane believed in him and signed

(11:10):
him To. Smack so he was With Smack poshing for
years and you, know we didn't write a. Bunch. Yeah
it's almost, like, hey you, know you come, here do
your own. Thing you gotta kind of find your own,
way AND i think it took him a few years
to kind, of you, know find his groove and he's rocking.
Now but it's. Cool we kind of we we do
our thing, together but we both sort of allow each
other some space and it feels fresh and exciting when

(11:32):
we come back. Together helped me out with.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
SOMETHING i was just going through your cataloger when you
mentioned that triple play with. Confession how's that song? Going
all the songs are.

Speaker 1 (11:39):
BLUR, u, rusty barbed, wirelines these, fields gravel dust behind the.
Wheels that the course of course is light up the
night and LET i just switched. Keys light up to,
night let it, burn lean back and watch the sun,
down feed do WHAT i do in, Life so little side,
ways take a, sip ban say it, prey wait full
shooting star and steer out fat the, headlights own the.

(12:00):
Highway guy in the windshield a looking back looks just like.
Me but there's a crack and the reflection this is
just the. Moonlights so got it? Cool got it? Cool took.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
Me there's songs everywhere all the. Time, yeah that got to.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
Know, yes it took me a. Second do you ever
do that you ever mix up your own. Songs, oh
all the.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
Time good BECAUSE i don't want to feel insulted.

Speaker 1 (12:20):
There oh and you know what's, Funny LIKE i played
these riders. ROUNDS i was playing one last, night And
i'll have like almost performance anxiety Where i've played these
songs a million, times BUT i have so many melodies
in my head THAT i would be, like DO i
remember this Melody i'm about to? Play but, yeah especially
when you're writing and, performing you're, like get get them
all twisted? Up for.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
SURE i talked to your brother a bit about growing,
up but everybody has two different, stories especially because you're
not the same, age, RIGHT i, mean you grow, up
it's the, same but it's.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
Different musical, FAMILY i don't.

Speaker 2 (12:51):
Know tell, me, well tell me what they were, like
what your parents were, like and what you saw them doing.

Speaker 1 (12:56):
Musically, yeah, so you, know such a cool. Thing my
dad wanted to be a. Songwriter his parents weren't musical at.
All he wanted to be a. Songwriter and you, know
we have binders of. Lyrics you know still that he
would write, lyrics and you know we can we just
sit around and joke and sing his. Songs now sometimes
we talk about making like a little record of his,
songs but we just grew up in a household with you,

(13:18):
know music all the. Time songwriters were. Highlighted and but
but when when he met my, mom he had a
band and you, know playing Around texas and she would
take tickets to the door and he would, play and you,
know when they had, us he obviously had that. Dream
and there's actually hilarious. VIDEO i think there's some on
YouTube of us playing around The opryes In, texas which
are sort of many you, know grand old oprys and

(13:41):
people would show up and we'd be singing like almost
like family band, style you, Know Merle haggard, Singing Daddy.
Frank and So i'm like, eight you, know nine or
eight or, nine and my bro's, there he's six or,
seven and we're singing with my. Mom my mom's got
the Big texas, hair and you, know dad singing and
we're singing. Along and so we just grew up doing
the family band, thing singing again other and my. Dad you,
know it's FUNNY i was thinking, about you, know it's

(14:04):
kind of it's really nice BECAUSE i think as you
get older and you start writing, songs you almost have
this inner. Critic AND i think my dad just encouraged
us to write and challenge us a. Rut he used
to give us a yellow legal pat and, say, hey
go in the other room and write a. Song AND
i think starting at such a young age allowed us
to just it's almost like we didn't even have that

(14:25):
inner critic in, us and so we just just. Wrote
and he really highlighted to, Us, hey here's the artists
that write their own. Songs and SO i just think
we loved. SONGWRITERS i think we love. Songs we just
grew up in. It and he cultivated that in, us
the love for. Songs and so you know When josh
jorn G, roh he's writing all the. SONGS i moved To,
nashville got, Signed i'm writing all my songs and, so,

(14:48):
yeah we just grew up in that environment that loved.
MUSIC i always, SAY i didn't know it wasn't normal
to sing at every family function UNTIL i went to
other people's houses and, like this isn't normal to sing
on cue at other people's. Houses so we just grew
up in. That and you, know there was never any.
PLAN B i was, LIKE i want TO i want
to make MUSIC.

Speaker 2 (15:07):
I had a friend messaged me last night late last,
night BUT i go to bed too, early SO i
read it this. Morning and he's in the middle of
writing a. Book i've written a couple of. BOOKS i didn't
like the process they take.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
Forever.

Speaker 2 (15:17):
YEAH i like writing funny songs much, better or just
songs in, general BECAUSE i know if it sucks or
not right AFTER i finish.

Speaker 1 (15:23):
It. Yeah. Yeah and he.

Speaker 2 (15:24):
Was like asking. It he's, LIKE i Think i've hit writer's.
Block and he asked me for my, advice AND i, Said,
HEY i don't know what writer's block, is BECAUSE i
feel LIKE i always, Suck LIKE i feel LIKE i
live in a, constant perpetual state of writer's. Block do
you get that as a, writer like a version of
writer's block where nothing is.

Speaker 1 (15:42):
Triggering the same?

Speaker 2 (15:43):
Thoughts, Nothing you feel like you can't land on a,
melody your lyrics Aren't and does that ever happen with?

Speaker 1 (15:49):
You? Yes AND i think the benefit Of nashville is
because it's such like a blue collar at least HOW
i approach. It blue. Collar my calendar is booked out
for the, year or not the, year but like months and,
months and you, know you fill in the gaps where it's, like,
HEY i have to show up and be creative and
you really get to lean on other. People but it
is a little bit of LIKE i will say THAT

(16:10):
i go through stretches WHERE i feel very OR i
can feel very, uninspired and that could be tied to writer's,
block and so you, KNOW i have little tricks that
kind of get me out of. It but they want
to hear a. Couple, yeah, MAN i think obviously some
of the go to is Reading, DUDE i.

Speaker 2 (16:27):
Do i'm telling you you're speaking right now to somebody
who uses that.

Speaker 1 (16:30):
Exactly you have to READ i really, THINK i mean,
again and it's different for, everybody BUT i just didn't
REALIZE i love it and you got to. Find, hey
WHEN i first moved to, town it's, like, hey here's.
Double you gotta write doubles.

Speaker 2 (16:41):
And Not, twitter by the, way BECAUSE i used to be,
like oh it's Three. Twitter, yeah not the same thing.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
Exactly you might find a hook On, twitter but YOU i,
have you, know On instagram you're, like, oh that's a cool.
Quote BUT i think you gotta if you're pouring, OUT i,
mean you spend your whole life talking and pouring out
books and, so and it's, like, man if you're not
feeling your tank, up you will start regurgitating the same
thing and melodies and so you really have to take

(17:05):
time and and feel your. Tank and so to, me
it's like JUST i love to, work But i've also
had to find the balance of, LIKE i know When
i'm starting to get a little, burnt and SO i
go through. Seasons But i'll. Read If i'm reading a,
book Then i'll just you, KNOW i might grab five
titles from a, book you, know and or listen to you,
know some great great music is always great BECAUSE i

(17:26):
just feel like language and vernacular and you, know finding
a cool artist and just listening and letting it be
in the background will just trigger phrases and ideas and
SO i just feel like the intake of that helps
like feel the well to pour back out.

Speaker 2 (17:41):
One of My this may tell you how UNINTELLIGENT i,
Am like, fundamentally WHEN i read, BOOKS i read.

Speaker 1 (17:48):
Them and THEN i use new.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
Words like my vernacular expands even THOUGH i know the.
Words there are a lot of words THAT i really
don't use UNTIL i read book and they're using those,
words And i'm, like, oh those are good Words i've forgotten. About,
yes and that sounds like something a sixth grader would. Say,
yes but that helps me tremendously and like my every,
day five hour a day talking.

Speaker 1 (18:09):
Life. Absolutely, yeah it's, like, hey what is? It, okay
what is this? Word and, okay what does this? Mean
i'm gonna just kind of, innately you, know put it
into Your, yeah like you, said your.

Speaker 2 (18:18):
Vernaculary sometimes don't even Realize i'm using it and it
just pops up all of a.

Speaker 1 (18:20):
Sudden have you READ i don't know what you're reading right,
Now Demon. COPPERHEAD i just read that was an amazing. Book
and then one of my favorites That i've read in
a long time is a book Called. James have you read?
That was? It is it? Fiction non? Fiction? About it's
fiction and it's Actually i'm trying to think the author's.
Name it's fantastic as one of the best books of the,
year you, know songs a few, lists but it was
it's from the, Perspective Huck. Finn it's from the perspective

(18:42):
of the. Slave oh, yeah so the whole book is
From james the slave's. Perspective it's One it's wonderful it's
one of the best books That i've read in the
last few. Years so, anyway not to no.

Speaker 2 (18:51):
NO i LIKE i liked the game of book nerd
because it's almost you almost got to have. Somebody it's
like A netflix. Show honest to, GOD i don't know
what shows to watch On my friends say much of a.

Speaker 1 (18:59):
Commitment, YES i need somebody to tell me that it's
great THAT i.

Speaker 5 (19:01):
Trust let's take a quick pause for a message from our, sponsor.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
And we're back on The Bobby.

Speaker 1 (19:15):
Cast the weird thing About.

Speaker 2 (19:17):
And, Again i'm not the person to go to if
someone's thinking about writing a book because the process to
me is it was grueling because it was so, long
and there's no payoff the day it's.

Speaker 1 (19:28):
Released where if you.

Speaker 2 (19:30):
Put out a song and it comes out that, day
you can, go, hey what do you think of the?
Song just generally to people you put out a, book
you gotta wait two three weeks before anybody even read
the freaking. Thing so you're just like sitting on your,
thumb just, going, Well i'll do this and feel it
until somebody tells me how they. Feel right, NOW i,
SAY i don't read a lot of. FICTION i like
to read fiction WHEN i will allow, myself Which i'm

(19:51):
getting better. At But i'm reading the book Called The
Life impossible right, now which is by this author from
AN i don't know any names of any books or
songs because OUR i read it thing on a iPad
and you don't see the front of the cover? Anymore
so how much was remember the title of the? Book
IF i don't see the front of the cover over and.

Speaker 1 (20:06):
Over you enjoy reading it on the. SCREEN i don't.

Speaker 2 (20:08):
Read it on my, phone BUT i read it on
an iPad, okay okay or a. Kendle my wife reads a.
KENDLE i read a.

Speaker 1 (20:13):
iPad but what's?

Speaker 2 (20:14):
Funny people say, like, hey you read anything? Good And i'm, like,
YEAH i know the name of. It, yeah because when it.

Speaker 1 (20:19):
Was hard, books you always saw the. Title. Yeah. Yeah
do you feel like are those inspiring like?

Speaker 2 (20:24):
You?

Speaker 1 (20:25):
Yeah things that inspire you the not self, help but
like that motivates you a little? Better is that your
kind of go? To so.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
The book THAT i can read YOU i read. Recently
don't believe everything you?

Speaker 1 (20:37):
Think? HMMM i, Heard, YEAH i tend.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
To and it's mostly the difference in thoughts and thinking
where you don't control your. Thoughts you do have some
influence on your thinking because that's putting effort into your,
thoughts and how some of your thoughts are. Toxic you
can't control your thoughts that come. In but it's basically
you can to a point control your. Thinking AND i did.
THAT i read this book Called gambler From Billy. Walters

(21:04):
he's a crazy guy who bet all this. Money but
AND i get into some of these books, too LIKE
i Read The realm Of Hungry.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
GHOSTS i come from a family of.

Speaker 2 (21:11):
Addiction and what sucks about reading digitally is that you're,
LIKE i really want to read, this and it's by
good warm matey who's a, doctor And i'm, Like i'm,
in and then you buy the.

Speaker 1 (21:20):
Book i'm an.

Speaker 2 (21:20):
IDIOT i buy the book and it's like nine hundred
and thirteen, pages And i'm, Like, god, dang if i'd
seen the, STORE i would have never grabbed.

Speaker 1 (21:25):
It it's too. Big thirteen that's a big. Book. Yeah.
Yeah on the, iPad it's all the same. Thickness that's a.

Speaker 2 (21:30):
Commitment SO i Read The Midnight library By Matt.

Speaker 1 (21:33):
Hayes oh great, Book, yes, awesome right?

Speaker 2 (21:35):
Book and that's who Wrote The Life, impossible and that's
WHY i ended up on that.

Speaker 1 (21:40):
One, okay THAT mani. Library it was. Fantastic, Yeah and
it's all about like life, choices like don't second guess
what you're doing because maybe it doesn't feel right right this. Second.

Speaker 2 (21:51):
Yeah but it's stuff like that That i'll read And
i'll just pull so much even without knowing it so.
Subconsciously and that was my question about, you and, right
like where do you pull stuff?

Speaker 1 (22:02):
From whenever you have to be a well, yeap you
have to BE i AND i, AGAIN i have a.
Daughter my oldest daughter will. Read she'd be, like, DAD
i love. Her she's a book, nerd but she's, LIKE
i read one hundred fifty pages last night And i'm
like blown. Away BUT i told, HER i, SAID i
read an article and they're, Saying i'm trying to remember
the stat but like the most successful people read the
most books a lot of times CEOs and So i'm,

(22:22):
like you, know it's like trying to encourage that in
my girls or, whatever and so but for me as a,
creative it's Just i've learned when the wells, DRY i
got to like put on you, know the things you,
know obviously for, me you, know getting my word in the.
Morning and then Obviously I'M i love to listen to,
music like classical music with no lyrics is. Refreshing but, yeah, books,

(22:43):
MOVIES i love. Movies and, again as a, WRITER i
feel like my intenna can go up and go, Okay
i'm listening to every. Conversation i'm listening trying to find you,
know What i'm saying. Ideas If i'm like that in that, Mode.

Speaker 2 (22:58):
I'd like to say to anybody, LISTENING i think both
of us understand that our jobs are not the same
as going to the mill like my stepdad had to
do every, day whatever the physical labor job. Is we're
in a creative. Space But i'm gonna say, this it
starts to. Burn it starts to be hard work because
not the same hard. WORK i can already see the
Messages I'm i'm just doing a little proactive keeping the
messages to hit me in the head right now when

(23:21):
it starts to be, difficult like an actual. Grind WHAT
i can do now a bit is force a bit of,
boredom BECAUSE i will Be i'm a, creative But i'm
managing seven different projects at, once and So i'm using
both sides on our, brain And i'm having to constantly

(23:42):
think of, compelling funny, things and at the same Time
i'm managing, people And i'll run out WHERE i feel
LIKE i have nothing, good. Nothing so IF i don't
force myself to be, bored nothing creative. Happens SO i
have to get myself back to that space. Quiet, yeah
it's the one of the place is THAT i think
the best is in the shower BECAUSE i can't go anywhere.

(24:03):
Else there's no PHONE i can get, to So i'll
just sit. There the shower is a good place.

Speaker 1 (24:07):
For, me right Driving, yeah to, me it's like driving
shutting everything. Off shower showers great now WHEN i drive
the on my phone you painting credit. Card it's a
scary place you're alone with your, thoughts but it's also
a beautiful thing because we really aren't alone with our thoughts,
anymore and it's hard to. Be it's hard to be
that we can feel so much of this space and so,
yeah obviously that's Where god shows up and just, downloads you,

(24:29):
know things to you and you're, yeah you can kind
of chew on things and how much of A texan are? You?
UH i, Mean i've met people that are we, know
we know, them AND i lived there for twelve. Years
oh you did. It, YEAH i lived In.

Speaker 2 (24:42):
Austin my adult young adult life is completely formed by
the state Of.

Speaker 1 (24:45):
Texas In, Austin. Texas so yes alone, Star, YEAH i
have friends that are so dial Hard texan AND i love.
It you, KNOW i was talking To read. Earlier it's, like,
hey you move, away and LIKE I i some of that.
PRIDE i feel even stronger now from WHERE i came.
From But i'm Not i'm not near as hardcore as
a lot of.

Speaker 2 (25:04):
People looking at your catalog here of songs that are
listed as notable, Hits i'm not sure who listened.

Speaker 1 (25:11):
On maybe Even, MIKE i don't.

Speaker 2 (25:12):
Know By Dirt Jordan davis talked about that one cop
Car Keith urban.

Speaker 1 (25:17):
That was a long time. Ago. Huh, yeah that was
my first With. Sam With, Sam, yeah i'd had a
few songs THAT i won't name that have that died
in the forties on the chart fifties and and you,
know didn't do WHAT i wanted him to and sat.
Down sam was, working didn't have a record deal, yet
And i'd written with him a time or two and
he shut. UP i, meant, Obviously sam's, brilliant and That

(25:39):
monovolo record really a few records come along that sort
of Changed. Nashville BUT i JUST i love the way
that his brain works and thought and and he had that,
idea you, know he WAS i think it's it's white
is his. Wife he was trespassing on some property and
got put put in the back of a cop. Car he,
GOES i want to write a song called fell In
love in the back of a cop. Car and, uh

(26:00):
we wrote it over four or five, rights And Keith
urban heard it and played it at The grammys and
changed my. LIFE i always SAY i was able to
call the home folk back In texas and tell THEM
i sort of made. IT i wasn't crazy no matter
what else. Happens Keith urban played my song at The.
Grammy so that was the first like like big, win
honestly win in my cells and win for me in.

Speaker 2 (26:22):
Town when you talk about writing With sam and that
was early early for you and early for. Him, yeah
and you say you wrote four or five, times LIKE
i Know sam and also know How sam.

Speaker 1 (26:35):
Works was that how he worked?

Speaker 2 (26:37):
Then where it was we were just going to revisit
over and over and.

Speaker 1 (26:39):
Over, no, no, OH i mean, Literally i'll say this
when we talk about other, artists but, Like sam is
one of the most, talented brilliant people That i've been
in the room. With BUT i think that the gift
That sam has is he literally the Longer i've been,
Here i've learned. This the best writers know when it's,
wrong and the great ones know how to fix it

(27:00):
and make it. Right and you can just write a,
song but when you the great writers know it's not.
Right And sam has that thing where he he could
just rewrite the same verse ten, times you. Know so
we we spent five six writes just like writing and
rewriting and stripping. Down and that wasn't you. Know i've
done that a little bit and so, yeah the early
days With sam were hard but good hard because the

(27:22):
end product was so, great but it was it was.
Painful BUT i will Say i've written with him quite
a bit recently and he's like he's he's you, know
not mellowed, out BUT i think he's evolved a little
bit and a little less that he'll we'll work on
stuff and then he'll take it back and kind of
would shit on it a little bit more than he used.

Speaker 2 (27:39):
To, yeah notorious at taking Forever, yeah and then after
forever going back and redoing it.

Speaker 1 (27:44):
AGAIN i heard this all this, Said sam's JUST i
think one of the most talented. People. SAM i Love. Sam,
oh BUT i heard body like A Back road THAT
i heard twenty different. Versions so but, again one of
the biggest songs in country music. History so he knows
something right for.

Speaker 2 (27:59):
Sure what about, like there are little things about songs
sometimes that maybe you don't think are going to be
the big thing about the song and the yep yep
yep And Dustin lynch Where it's At yep.

Speaker 1 (28:10):
Yep when you say that, SONG i go, yep, yeah
the yep yep.

Speaker 2 (28:13):
Song so more so than like the writing of that,
Song i'm curious about the edition Of yep, yep OR
i guess the lack of subtraction of yep, yep or
how that came.

Speaker 1 (28:23):
About you, know wrote With Zach, crowd who's a great.
Friend we sort of came up together and we had
cop card together and we wrote that Where It's at
With Cary. Barlow and you, know in your career you
have these songs that are like you, know are these,
big meaty. Songs and Then zach had this. Track zach
hadn't had a hit. Yet zach had this, track and

(28:43):
we showed up with Carry barlow And carrie's you, know
married To Hilly, lindsay just an amazing musician and guitar.
Player and he starts playing that lead lift damp, down you,
know and we write where it's, at and there's this
little space AND i give it to give it up
To zach and just his, intuition his producer hit in.
Intuition there was a little space where yep yep went
and we were just working on it and he just

(29:05):
got on the mind and said yep. Yep he just
filled that space with yep. Yep and it's so. Funny
it was like it came out dustin cut. It it's
like where it's, at yep. Yep it's like it became a,
thing and it was so. Funny it was like such
like an add on after the. Fact but those little,
CANDY i think his pop brain knew there needed to
be a part, there and it was like that little

(29:26):
candy that kind of took it to another.

Speaker 5 (29:28):
Level The bobby cast will be right. Back this is
The bobby CAST.

Speaker 2 (29:42):
I wonder two with that, song and Again i'm asking
to go and think back about something years. Ago but was, It,
hey let's try. This, HEY i think this is going
to be. Awesome did you hear it the first? Time
it had to hit a little weird because again it
wasn't it's not camm that's not common and, yeah how,
yeah like what what was the range there of let's try? This,

(30:03):
OKAY i like? It or you, guys you guys talk
about a little, bit you.

Speaker 1 (30:06):
Know and, again like you, SAID i don't remember, exactly
BUT i do remember digging in and feel like it
became like a thing in the song that kind of
made it.

Speaker 2 (30:14):
Special did you know it was gonna be something that stuck?

Speaker 1 (30:16):
Out, yeah that's what it felt. Like it felt, like you,
know it, was, yeah that little extra piece and then
obviously dust and cutting it and just taking it to another.
Level and it's so funny WHEN i play it, live
it's like in the crowds singing the, part you, know
it is like the. Thing there are a.

Speaker 2 (30:33):
Couple other INSTANCES i think, of not exactly the, same
But Kobe, cala will you come me? In and they
leave that in and you, guys, yes and you guys
did that. Purposefully but it's like the things that you
remember from the songs that maybe weren't supposed to be
the thing you were gonna remember from the song when
they wrote the song that and Then James blunt On

(30:55):
You're beautiful where it's like it's a lot and he's
like sings the first line twice the beginning of it
and they left it.

Speaker 1 (31:05):
In, Yeah so there are a lot of. Those it's
almost like that uniqueness or that for.

Speaker 2 (31:10):
Sure and there's gotta be a conversation like do we lease?

Speaker 1 (31:11):
This? Yeah like why it's almost some magic in, it
you know that you go like and some risk, yeah
and some. Risk. Yeah, yep it's.

Speaker 2 (31:19):
AWESOME i Tell dustin that all the, time like the
fact that he cut that, song left it, in didn't
think that he was too good for.

Speaker 1 (31:25):
It, yeah because now it's that's one.

Speaker 2 (31:27):
Of the most fun songs that, like as they call,
it a, Recurrent, yeah it's a really fun recurrent of
your songs on The and for those listening to recurrent
would be a song that has already hit number, one
done really, well has been off the, chart but we'll
be brought back to play because audiences are familiar with
it and like. It there are also things called golds
that would be Like brooks and done like the, older

(31:49):
but of like what song has done best for you
as like as a?

Speaker 1 (31:52):
RECURRENT i, mean OBVIOUSLY i would say By, dirt but
you know that's kind of a fresher, song so you
know where it's at was. Big but you, know CAN
i be, honest DO i make you want? It Billy?
Carrington oh, yeah it is like that was sort of
we love that. Song it was not even going to
be a, single and they decided to put it out
and you, Know billy's voice is just insane AND i

(32:15):
don't know whatever that just it just sounded so good
on the. Radio AND i still hear that song all the.
Time and you, know when you look at you, know
you're able to look at your ass cap checks and, go,
hey which songs you know they some of some of
them fall off a, cliff and then that's a good
recurrent and Then, billy you, KNOW i still hear.

Speaker 2 (32:29):
It billy is the artist THAT i think of most
when it's the OH i didn't know he sang that?

Speaker 1 (32:36):
Artist, yes of.

Speaker 2 (32:37):
Not he has so many hits, monsters awesome, songs but
he's not around, much and when you start to look
at his, catalog you're, LIKE i didn't realize them any.

Speaker 1 (32:46):
Hits oh if you went and Saw Billy, currington it
would be it's probably. Twenty it's all. Hits it's crazy how. Many,
yeah he almost, falls, yeah a little under the, radar
for his voice is so. Identifiable but it's weird how
some artists just sort of transcend and become. Bigger you.
Know you also have these artists that you look at
their their catalog and they don't have that many, hits

(33:08):
but they're such a star and they have a, thing
And billy. Is but some artists just kind of fall
under the radar a little. Bit AND i think That's billy's,
personality a little, Understated, yeah very.

Speaker 2 (33:19):
Much so doesn't have a lot to say when he's
not saying. It And i've been Lucky billy AND i
have Billion i've been really cool for a long. Time
but not cool as in we talk a, lot because
he doesn't talk a, lot or he'll he's, like, hey
you should come stay with me In. Hawaiian i'm, like
we've talked four. TIMES i love, you BUT i don't.
KNOW i. KNOW i think that's part of what has
Kept billy from being the person everybody knows Is billy

(33:41):
has chosen not to be the person that everybody.

Speaker 1 (33:43):
Knows he's, like, HEY I he'll post videos of him
In hawaii. Something it's. Funny when DO i make you?
Want it was coming. Out he posted a video On
instagram and we're, like uh. Oh for a, minute he
like posts a video of like kim niked like from from,
behind like climbing a coconut try and you're, like uh,
oh this is gonna hurt. Ourselves it was just it's like,
anyway Classic.

Speaker 2 (34:01):
Billy my favorite song of, yours maybe one of my
top twenty songs since moving To, nashville is setting The
world On fire BECAUSE i love When kenny sings slow.
Songs i'm not a big Beach kenny guy BECAUSE i
don't like the beach that. MUCH i Love Kenny chesney
when he's doing the. Ballads, yeah and this is up,
there It's kenny And. PINK i love setting the world on.

(34:21):
Fire tell me that.

Speaker 1 (34:22):
Story, yeah such a cool. STORY i, Mean Josh, osborne
you know there's a crew of. Us WHEN i first
moved to. Town It's shane, Mccannally Matt, ramsey elite singer
Of Old, Dominion, Trevor Brandy, clark And Josh osborne and
we were like a. Pack And Josh osbourne is like
one of my best friends in. Town we've been writing for,

(34:42):
years had a few hits on there together that, list
and we got together with our Buddy Ross, kaperman and you,
know people always ask the cool thing About nashville is
it is about. Ideas But ross is. Brilliant if you've
had On ross, before it was one of my closest.
Friends oh. Yeah ross is a great, friend and he's.
Brilliant he's musically, brilliant and he'll have these musical. Pieces

(35:03):
so he had like almost like a. Score he had
the music to set in the world on, fire no,
melodies and so we just start singing and melodies and
we don't have a. Hook and it's. FUNNY i love
The Ryan adams Song Losienna good just smiled and you,
know So i'm, like first, verse we got drunk GUN
i see in a boulevard and we start coloring all

(35:24):
these cool pictures and we don't have a, hook and
So i'm like scrambling an hour, in going, like where's
a what hook CAN i we find that fits? This
and a couple of pages, Back i'd written down the
titles back to, reading, reading And i'd written down just
written down setting The world On. Fire So i'm like
scrambling for an, idea and a couple of pages back
in my note section had written down the title setting

(35:44):
The world On. Fire we plugged that, in got sent To.
Kenny there's a funny story. Here we got got sent To.
Kenny we heard he loved it And pink was gonna
hop on. It AND i don't know if you heard this,
story BUT i heard she called him and, said you
know the. Story i'm putting out music at the exact same.
Time you can't release, this and, yeah you may know

(36:06):
more THAN i do of the. Story and luckily she
called back and, Said i'm. Pregnant you can put this song.
Out is that? True that's? True i'd heard. That, Yeah
SO i always, say whatever happened that, Night i'm glad it.

Speaker 2 (36:15):
Happened, yes getting pregnant and allowed that song because, yeah
they had music that was going to pop up against each.

Speaker 1 (36:21):
Other her baby helped. Me they pay for my, babies
So i'm. Grateful but, anyway, yeah that you, KNOW i
think that. Song like the THING i love about it
is it has like it's, country but it has soul
and you, know it's, LIKE i don't, know it's one
of my funnest to play, live and it just has
like a thing to it that's you, know, again a
lot of it's ross And Josh josh is, brilliance But

(36:43):
kenny And pink just brought it to. LIVES i love that,
song you, know AND i didn't even WHEN i first heard.
IT i Thought kenny was going to sing the, choruses
and then he Got pink to sing, him you, know
which is like really a, cool almost like a pop
thing to.

Speaker 2 (36:53):
Do so the television Show nashville that was ON abc
and then ended up being ON cm, two which was. Fiction,
yeah that's not the show that you were.

Speaker 1 (37:03):
On, no you're going On you're going old. SCHOOL i
didn't even know you knew about. This, yeah there was
a SHOW i think On fox Pre yeah that was On. Fox,
YEAH i, KNOW i know all the. Answers i'm just
letting you, talk. Dude you, know you know some, dirt you.
KNOW i, Mean i'm trying to be an. ARTIST i,
MEAN i grew up in TEXT i wanted to Be George.
STRAIGHT i moved, here had a record, deal lost a record.

(37:25):
Deal i'm kind of in the like wilderness, years like
what AM i? Doing AND i got approached to be
on the Show. Nashville it was On fox and it
was FROM i should have known it was from the
creators Of Laguna, beach but they were pitching it as
more of a a like hates about the. MUSIC i
should have.

Speaker 2 (37:42):
Known music credibility was how that. SHOW i remember when
it was being created and it really it really.

Speaker 1 (37:50):
Was there was no, yeah and so you got in
and you, realize, like, oh they're they're just going after the.
Drama and what's funny is, like you, Know Jamie johnson
was on the Show. Chill there was a lot of you,
know people That i'm friends with now And i'm GLAD
i did the. Show BUT i got in and there
was like just drama and they're, Like, hey you think
that girl's, Cute you're going to hang out. Tonight you.

(38:11):
Know it's just like you could tell they wanted there
to be drama and relationships and not as much. Music
so luckily it lasted a couple of episodes and got.
Pulled did you ever think about doing? It and maybe you?

Speaker 2 (38:23):
Did did you ever audition for any of the? Shows
LIKE i had all the voice any of.

Speaker 1 (38:26):
That, NO i thought about, it BUT i NEVER i don't.
KNOW i feel LIKE I i don't. KNOW i don't.
KNOW i don't know if MAYBE i just that's a great.
QUESTION i don't know IF i ever thought about it too,
SERIOUSLY i don't know if it WAS i don't. Know
MAYBE i don't. Know i'll. SEE i think you, know
obviously you're a part Of American idol and it's changed people's.
Careers BUT i just never thought about going that.

Speaker 2 (38:46):
ROUTE i think if you anybody would have done it
seven or eight years, ago there's a lot of strings
that would have kept you attached to certain. Things it
was almost, like you, know give to get, it and
that you would back in the day when the show
will use. Idle for, example BEFORE i was on, it
it was like massively pop culture seasons one through, seven,

(39:10):
right people watched and you, knew and you rooted and
you had but if you won or finished, anywhere they
had the rights to keep you and do a lot with,
you and that could hurt. You you had all this
whatever fame, is but you kind of owed that entity
later AND i did four years on. It it was
zero percent that but you didn't have as much fame

(39:34):
because everything is fractured at this.

Speaker 1 (39:36):
Point fame is so, fractured.

Speaker 2 (39:38):
And so people would, go, HEY i was, thinking AM
i doing or auditioning For idol Or The? Voice and,
like how much do we have to owe? IT i was,
like you, don't, right you have the opportunity if you,
win but you don't owe them. Anything AND i also
think the stigma of being on one of those shows
has fallen a bit because now it's just how can

(40:00):
you get as many people to see?

Speaker 1 (40:01):
You? Period, yep that's.

Speaker 2 (40:04):
IT i.

Speaker 1 (40:04):
THINK i do think early on there was maybe a
little bit of a big, time you, know And i'd
had a record and lost it AND i Think i'm
about to get another, one AND i just, YEAH i
think that was probably the biggest.

Speaker 2 (40:13):
Thing there was a deserve, stigma right because they cornballed
you up on those shows way more than they do,
now and they still do a little bit because they
need people to sing familiar. Songs but there were certain
artists that we'd be like you should singing Original, yeah,
yeah and like if they were LIKE i, say artist finger,
quotes if they were a, writer if they actually, played
if they sang and had the ability and capacity to
do and we encourage them to do.

Speaker 1 (40:35):
That AND i even, think, yeah the Last eduardo and
some of these people that have come out that are
just name, check good. JOB i got. THAT i will,
say not THAT i didn't watch it back in the,
day BUT i have four daughters and so we have
some go tos and, when, yeah When American idol comes,
on it's like. Record we watched it as a. Family so,
Yeah BUT i think it's not that it wasn't early,
on BUT i think the artistry has really been highlighted

(40:57):
in a you know What i'm saying.

Speaker 2 (40:58):
Even refreshing to me to be able to allow people
to do their own.

Speaker 1 (41:01):
Thing.

Speaker 2 (41:01):
Yep and some people, did couldn't and didn't need to
because they were just a good straight ahead.

Speaker 1 (41:05):
Singer AND i also think now we have the enough
like history and artists that have come off the show
and worked THAT i don't, KNOW i THINK I i'd
probably approach it. Differently, now what's up with? You in
your first record?

Speaker 2 (41:17):
Deal did you have interest before you moved here or
did you come here and then did you do a
publishing deal?

Speaker 1 (41:22):
First? That what was a? Process? Yeah so again back
to growing up like there was no PLAN. B i
grew up playing Around. TEXAS i wanted to be you.
KNOW i Loved Randy, Travis Don, Williams George, strait Loved John.
Mayer you. Know SO i wrote all my own songs
AND i CAME i entered A Naris grammy. SHOWCASE i
went to music college Outside. Texas what was that? Thing?

(41:43):
Again the Way i'm THE Nars grammy? Showcase and you
Know Jesse, ALEXANDER i do she she was a part
of that one of the years THAT i was. In
BUT i made the finals of. THAT i came to
town and how do you do? That do you send a?
Song mail of? Songs send a song in That i'd
written by, myself And i'd made the of that at
like nineteen or, twenty and it got me to town
And Jody williams and if you, Know Joey yams RAN bmi.

(42:05):
Forever he had me into his. OFFICE i sang and
played and then he took me over to play For
Tim duboil And Tony brown In. Universal i'm nineteen AND
i walk, IN i, PLAYED i played for six seven,
people and they offered me a record deal on the.
Spot what'd you look? Like what's? Night what what nineteen
mat looked? Like you, know, youthful spry hair LIKE i

(42:28):
was just thick wavy. Hair, yeah naives all get. Out
did you have like a thing? Visually, yeah LIKE i think,
COUNTRY i mean not too far off. THIS i MEAN
i did used to rock the cowboy hat, more BUT i.
DIDN'T i didn't rock it in that, meeting BUT i
was just trying to like cowboy, cool you.

Speaker 2 (42:43):
Know iby a little bit like, yeah like young vibey
country bybe, yeah like it would be, yeah well cowboy,
boots but you, know some a Little james And John
mayer mixed in with, there and you, know And i'd
written all these songs by, myself and SO i just played.

Speaker 1 (42:57):
It they offer me a record. Deal i'm, Like i'm
gonna be famous and always Say, god use that to
get me. Here but you, know then you start the
journey of then they throw you in the room with
like then they throw in your room with like all
these like established, writers and you kind of lose You oh,
NO i don't want to lose. This you got a.

Speaker 2 (43:11):
Deal by the, way for those that aren't, watching WHEN
i say, Vibe matt wears, eyeliners run it.

Speaker 1 (43:15):
Today so it runing a eyeliner. Lipstick it's a, kiss you. Know, No,
no he's not at. All but you got a record
deal that. Day they offered you a deal that, yes
and how does that? Work?

Speaker 2 (43:25):
Yes OR i don't, Know let's look at it for
a while and come back to.

Speaker 1 (43:29):
You, Yeah Joe nichols was popping off with The, impossible
and you, Know Tony brown had Produced George straight And
tim had been At arister for, years and SO i
think there was like a credibility to, them And jody
had taken me. Off they always, like send the contract.
Over but, yeah they gave me a, BOTTLE i, said they,
said we want to sign. You they gave me a
bottle of champagne THAT i kiss kept. Forever and, yeah

(43:50):
and again it opened the door to get. Here BUT
i you, KNOW i think they sent a great contract
and you, know next, thing you, know these songs that
you've written by, yourself then you're in the. STUDIO i
just don't THINK i knew WHO i was and enough
yet to be, no, no, no this this IS i want,
this you. Know then they throw you in the studio
With Tony brown and you got a twelve piece band,
playing you, know and then they're, like, hey what if?

(44:10):
You what if? We you, know listen to a few outside,
songs and it just changes from the period you know
where it. Started and IF i could go, back you,
KNOW i WISH i could do it, differently BUT i wasn't.
Ready but obviously it got me, here And i'm grateful
for the friendships and the door being open to getting askrew,
that but what about as far as, like did you

(44:31):
ever put a single? Out? Yes and how what was that?
Process and how to DO i put two singles out
and they died in the. Forties BUT i did the radio,
tour you, Know dean AND i were. TALKING i got,
to you, know open up For Taylor, SWIFT, i you,
know open up For LADY a And Zach brown, band
and did the radio. Tour SO i got a little
bit of the, artist play The grand Ol opry a few,

(44:53):
times got to experience a little bit of the artist's.
Life and but none of them ever took off enough
to you, know gain any.

Speaker 5 (45:00):
Traction, seriously let's take a quick pause for a message
from our, sponsor.

Speaker 2 (45:12):
And we're back on The Bobby. Cast after the second,
Single is that when that relationship ended with the?

Speaker 1 (45:19):
Label, Yeah Mark wright came, in took, over, showcased and
we got the word that he was going to drop.
ME i think he dropped. Everybody AND i, remember not
to be too, REAL i remember getting my car and
just being, like all, Right i'm, gonna you, know being super,
emotional Like i'm going to go back, home like it's.
Over you, know you almost feel like your world's, ending
and uh and, uh BUT i. DIDN'T i didn't have

(45:43):
anything else THAT i, loved and SO i JUST i
think it's a lot of people's. STORY i just stuck
around BECAUSE i was, LIKE i love, writing and SO
i was, Like i'm. THERE i guess somebody stick, around
And i'm GLAD i. Did but it was it was a,
painful painful. Journey did you have a publishing deal at
the same time or was it within The it was With,
jody you, know but you, Know i've had probably, lost

(46:04):
had and lost three or four publishing deals BEFORE i even,
had you. Know SO i was With jody and lost.
IT i was With sony and lost. IT i was
with a company Called Black, ink and that's when those
years are WHEN i started connecting with you, know the
boys From Old dominion And shane And. Josh so there
started to be like a little bit of nuggets of you, Know,
okay we got a hold and a few things started,

(46:26):
happening and THEN i ended up signing With Ashley gorley's
Company Tape room And, combustion and we're there now And Warner,
No i'm me At warner now. Mainly but, yeah so
it's mainly, dang, yeah. DIVERSIFYING i, KNOW i know there's
a GREAT i have a writer manager Named Alicia preuett
who has a co venture With. Warner so it's you,
KNOW i think every songwriter's journey would be would be.

(46:47):
Similar but it's a lot of a lot of, songs
a lot of publishing, companies people, paying you, know almost
for you to learn how to write. Songs it's why That.

Speaker 2 (46:54):
LAMBORGHINI i didn't, Know Druve. Lamborghinia that makes. Sense now
times are. Good uh so you almost got to SAY
i can do what you. Say you, Did, no never
got to, now never got you tried for a while
tried for a. While, yeah when do you have that internal,
okay the artist. Thing maybe we're gonna put it on,
hold or maybe we're not going to pursue that and
we're going to, Run.

Speaker 1 (47:13):
Like when does that? Happen? YEAH i think in. CONJUNCTION
i started having a few songs Like jacob and cut
a song of mine Called heaven that was on His
uh what record was that? On? SHOOT i don't know,
that but he talked about it being a sing but
that that WAS i had a few songs that kind
of popped AND i was, Like, okay this songwriter thing
is getting some. Life this is Like i'm twenty, five

(47:34):
twenty six at this, point and you, know BUT i
wrestled for years BECAUSE i felt like the only thing
that was success was being a successful artist selling Out Bridge.
Stone that was the. Dream and it took. Me it
took me years to sort of surrender over time BECAUSE
i experienced enough of the artist thing to, go, OKAY
i THINK i could be okay writing, songs AND i

(47:56):
THINK i had to get to the point WHERE i was,
Like i'm not just because As i'm not trying to
be an artist on the radio doesn't Mean i'm not
an artist. ANYMORE i thought THAT i had to like
give that part of me, up AND i was just,
Like i'm still an artist. Now i'm JUST i think
it was gradual and overtime AND i kind of was, like,
hey this is a pretty good life and Now i'm
playing more shows THAN i you, know can even play

(48:19):
and get to be home ninety five percent of the,
time and, yeah write. Songs so It's i'm. GRATEFUL i
WOULDN'T i wouldn't change, anything but it. Was it, was,
yeah an evolution of letting that go a little. Bit
what was your first? Cut? Oh, Shoot heaven was early
on you Remember Loving? Theft, yes, yeah they had a
song called running out Of. AIR i don't feel that

(48:41):
was one of their singles that didn't do. It Wait
i'm Running, YEAH i know. That, WAIT i gotta catch my,
BREATH i feel big and then hold on and again my.
Head how's the hook? Go? Shoot you Would i'm air
pull it, up full of.

Speaker 2 (48:55):
Up that's the problem because if you start doing a
bunch AND i do this during on my show, too
if we're doing like eight songs or talking about songs
and they're like singer ahead of litt Lamb i'm Like
mary had.

Speaker 1 (49:04):
FORGOT i can't do it too many. Melodies, okay So
i'm running. Out yeah, Man i'm almost. There you're. There it's.
FUNNY i was in a Home depot a while back
and it was. PLAYING i was, like, wow Home depot
got the deep.

Speaker 2 (49:16):
Cuts this MIGHT i don't feel like this was that deep, though, Right.

Speaker 1 (49:19):
Yeah it wasn't really a. HIT i mean, IT i
know this.

Speaker 2 (49:22):
Is this is my favorite song of. Their, Really i'm
gonna run right to you Then I'm gonna run. Away,
yeah this is my favorite song of. There the one
guy over AND i do it all. Day that's how
you get all your, streams this.

Speaker 1 (49:35):
One hold. ON i love this. Song thank, You ye
run right To you And I'm gonna run away go.
JAM i like to think that song was ahead of its.
TIME i really. DO i absolutely. Agree H i go

(49:55):
feel it was kind of, fresh but like if it
had been a couple of years, later it would have
would have.

Speaker 2 (49:59):
Worked it's Like i'm running out of it as a.

Speaker 1 (50:03):
Jam. Dude you know you wrote that.

Speaker 2 (50:05):
One that was. Good my respect for you from like
load to. Medium oh thank, You i'm.

Speaker 1 (50:11):
Kidding that's a great. Song, now Thanks, BRO.

Speaker 2 (50:13):
I feel like somebody should cut that, Now, yeah Like heath.

Speaker 1 (50:15):
Or somebody or you, know And i'm.

Speaker 2 (50:17):
Sure or like Jelly, rollers that, guy let's Oh morgan
the hit any of?

Speaker 1 (50:23):
Those can you help me with? That So i'm gonna
ask this.

Speaker 2 (50:27):
QUESTION i would prefer not to say any names BECAUSE
i have friends that do this and. You i'm not
asking you to say any, names BUT i do want
to talk ABOUT ai for a. Second there are different
ways that it's. Utilized difficult lyrically BECAUSE i don't feel
LIKE ai IS ai doesn't have the nuance built into you,

(50:52):
know we'll call it a regionality of country.

Speaker 1 (50:54):
Music so that's a bit.

Speaker 2 (50:56):
Tough BUT i know folks who can YOU ai to
sing the song in their own? Voice, yes on a
demo to see if they would like themselves singing.

Speaker 1 (51:06):
It oh. OH i was with somebody the day and they're, like,
hey we're writing for Jelly, roll and they're, LIKE i
got a jelly roll vocal and Jelly roll loves to
HEAR i was thinking of Jelly. Roll, Sorry i'm not today,
names but this is like known and so it's like
there's not any any like saying, anything and so it's
like it is becoming a thing in. TOWN i think the,
ARTIST i think initially was, like are people gonna have

(51:27):
a weird? Thing BUT i think it's become a little
a little more regular now and so it, Is, man
what a weird world like warp. Speed this literally happened. Overnight,
well they're also not putting the song out, yes with
THE ai. Voice so.

Speaker 2 (51:43):
What from my understanding And i've heard some of this,
too if THE ai you can write a song and
have that version of that person's voice sing that song
and see then you can listen to it to see
if you would like to sing that. Song and that's
just using a.

Speaker 1 (51:57):
Tool what do you think about The Randy? Travis he's
one of my. Heroes what are your? You?

Speaker 2 (52:01):
Maybe, OKAY i Think randy is different than Another i'll
Talk randy. Specifically. Yeah first of, ALL i think it's pretty.

Speaker 1 (52:08):
Cool and what it did is it gave him a.

Speaker 2 (52:10):
Voice it, first it introduced people to the idea good or,
bad of WHAT ai could, do BECAUSE i don't think
really there was an understanding because it wasn't so much
front and center of HOW ai would work and allow
an artist or there are people in kind of my
business who will ai their commercials because they have all their.

Speaker 1 (52:29):
Sounds you know that you can sit in the.

Speaker 2 (52:31):
ROOM i haven't done, it not Because i'm too good for,
it but BECAUSE i just don't want to admit That
i've done, it because as soon AS i do, It
i'll admit where they have you going room and uh la,
ba you're doing all these sounds and you're saying, words
and then they can make any commercial with your.

Speaker 1 (52:45):
Voice it sounds ninety three percent.

Speaker 2 (52:47):
Right the fact that you could take and make a
song from old, recordings old you, know uh voice, CLIPS
i think it would made people, go, wow who knew
you could do? That and then some of them were, like,
wow that's. Crazy that doesn't feel like real, hard that
doesn't feel. Whatever SO i thought that was a great

(53:10):
introduction to what the technology. Is AND i think For randy,
specifically WHY i did like it for him is he can't.
SING i think it's different if it's an artist that
can who's just, like let's just make it and put it.

Speaker 1 (53:23):
Out AND i, think, yeah to connect to, YOU i
think what you're, SAYING i just don't think. PEOPLE i
think people especially, now are Create we crave, authenticity AND
i think that the human even the air thing that
we talked, about the Coby kola thing and THE i think,
people you, know it's like IF i KNEW ai wrote a,
BOOK i don't want TO i don't want to read.

(53:43):
IT i don't know there's something IF i knew it
was AN ai, vocal it JUST i think the humanity
of connecting with the flaws and maybe, GUITAR i don't,
KNOW i connect with. That SO i think, listeners if
there's a label in the future this IS, AI i
think people will not consume. IT i. Don't but, again
if it's some background musical piece on Planet earth or

(54:05):
something where it's like this was A i generated or to,
me that's. Different BUT i think this is where you
align To it's, like, HEY i think there's spaces that it.
Works but when it comes to writing lyric and the
humanity and the sole, PART i just don't think it
can do what humans can. Do and SO i just
don't think listeners in the audience WILL i don't, know support.

Speaker 2 (54:28):
It it's a word that's not used, often especially in today's,
climate but there's nuance with.

Speaker 1 (54:33):
It, yeah you, know we're not a big nuance culture.

Speaker 2 (54:36):
Nowadays but, YEAH i also think it will get so
good where they can make it sound quote more. Authentic
AND i would COMPARE ai to like a book ghost.
Writer if you get a great, ghostwriter nobody knows that
the person didn't even write the. Book and if they
think the person writes the book wrote the, book they

(54:57):
love the book even.

Speaker 1 (54:58):
Though the person didn't write.

Speaker 2 (54:59):
It, yeah IF ai can eventually do, that which probably
at some point we'll be able, to you, know will.

Speaker 1 (55:06):
Laws require there to be a, tag and, yeah it'll be.
Different But i'd fake the crap out of. It IF
i could sing yeah doing your, SHOW i would just
turn there's a hologrammy you do in your show in the. Morning,
okay so it's funny you bring that. Up so pandemics
messed up my.

Speaker 2 (55:25):
Years but right before the, pandemic the year before the,
pandemic nineteen, nineteen, yep Uh Ross, Kauferman i'm very close
To ross And Nicole gallion us three got together and
wrote a whole bunch of songs and it WASN'T. Ai
but my idea WAS i wanted to create a holographic
basically artist but tour opener that could be The Baby

(55:48):
act and a baby act at the same time on
a bunch of. Tours so it was gonna be a,
hologram and but all the songs be written by. Us
we're gonna be sung by, Us so we're gonna write
them all and we're gonna build this thing.

Speaker 1 (55:59):
Out and then.

Speaker 2 (56:02):
They was gonna go out and be the open or
opener or like instead of A dj you. Have it
was Called Neon people and so and and there's a
few songs. Up we ended up having to shell but
Because nicole got the sort of being the president of
that record. Label but we wrote for like three. Months
we wrote all these. Songs they're really good Because ross
And nicole, LIKE i was, LIKE i have this great.

(56:22):
Idea and then we would secretly ride and we put
them under fake names AND i don't and that WASN'T,
ai but that, was you, know, Technical we were going
to use. Technology and that came to. Me it came
to me in a, dream not. REALLY i was watching
like Sixty minutes or, something and In japan they had
a massive pop star that was a. Hologram, okay AND i, thought,

(56:45):
Okay i've seen. Holograms i've seen hologams Like elvis And
tupac and doing their. Thing but what if we created
a new one and actually wrote for country and made
it inexpensive to have go around and be a.

Speaker 1 (56:56):
Part of a tour and not have to be. There
it's also, lazy LIKE i want to go do it
and get to be and why. NOT i think if
people know what it is up the front on the front,
END i think that's well, YEAH.

Speaker 2 (57:06):
I mean they definite wouldn't think it was anybody there
because it was gonna be a. Computer but, yeah so
it's pull this, Up neil p p l is how
we spelled, people and we worked on it forever and
you're right About.

Speaker 1 (57:17):
Ross that, dude he's he's he's a, genius Brilliant and
So nicole sang the song but like.

Speaker 2 (57:27):
And we never really got to go public with it
because before we were, Done nicle and she was like
she couldn't do.

Speaker 1 (57:32):
It it's a conflict of. Interest but it was, like.

Speaker 2 (57:39):
So it's definitely. Vibe wasn't super, traditional but still was like, regionally.

Speaker 1 (57:48):
He's just a fat dad is getting loose Up christmas
this fal.

Speaker 2 (58:04):
So we did so we did a bunch and Then
nicole got too big for a bridges. Cool so she
was going to be the voice she was she Wrote
okay big TO i mean she got to be the
president of record.

Speaker 1 (58:13):
Label like literally yeah yeah she was.

Speaker 2 (58:15):
This we would sit and write and we would just
sing them right, then And ross's writing.

Speaker 1 (58:20):
House, wow what a new front. HERE i, Mean i'm
STILL i think we're all evolving our thoughts on. It
and it's, Like i'll be curious in our world and
legislation like did they put up? Boundaries you? Know and
and like you, said, Tags but, man what a wild
thing that we could have a future pop star that
is just Created and people, go, HEY i Love it's

(58:40):
visually created all the, sounds BUT i LOVE i love.
It and my kids are jamming to in the. Car
it's like that feels like it's.

Speaker 2 (58:46):
Coming running out of air neon people both ahead of
their freaking. Tippens we talked about this before you got,
here but we're doing this music night live where you're
going to.

Speaker 1 (58:58):
Sing so this is you singing your? Song, yeah how
did they approach you to do? This? Yeah so such
a Cool nashville. STORY i was at a friend's house
who was a great. Friend he's a musician and one
of his friends there was There dean Cell and and
we hit it off and we were talking And dean
sort of shared his vision of. This he had moved,

(59:19):
here and you know in, town we have, this you,
know for the, listeners like these songwriter nights Which i've
alluded to. Earlier it's at The bluebird or the listening
room in people's houses where you go, here you, know, two,
three four songwriters share the stories behind the songs and
play and sing them in their own sort of original.
Way And dean had seen one of these songwriter nights

(59:40):
at somebody's house and was just saying How moody was by,
it and he loved, it and you, know he Had
dean had a history in film and, broadcast and he just, said,
HEY i have this idea of broadcasting a songwriter night
live to movie theaters Around. America so if you live
in you, know middle Of nebraska or you, Know kansas

(01:00:00):
or wherever you, know you can go to your Movie,
texas you can go to your movie theater and see
experience the live songwriter night at your local movie. Theater
and SO i thought it was a brilliant. Idea and,
yeah we met a few times and, he you, know
just had the vision and has gone all the way
and obviously gotten some incredible songwriters involved With Brat james
And Kelly archer and yourself being involved in some great

(01:00:23):
team and so it's coming to Life march. Eighth, Yeah
so this is the week of, it, Right.

Speaker 2 (01:00:28):
Mike so it's This saturday night at seven Pm. Central
it's live in all time zones, though so live in
all times. Zones does that mean it's gonna be Eight,
eastern Seventh central or does that mean it's going to
be seven in all time?

Speaker 1 (01:00:40):
Zones do we, Know? Mike do we?

Speaker 2 (01:00:43):
Know? So so Eight, eastern Seventh, central Six, Mountains, Okay,
yeah having a syndicated show where times are all, different
it's all, Okay so Eight, eastern, yeah Seventh, central Six,
mountain Five.

Speaker 1 (01:00:55):
Pacific, yeah go to the.

Speaker 2 (01:00:57):
Theater you can look it up to it's Thet Them
entertainment WHAT i know them from is Like phantom of
The opera and you watch like A broadway show live.

Speaker 1 (01:01:04):
There do you know what you're gonna play? It you? Know,
yes some of the songs you, LISTED i mean we you,
know obviously had to get some stuff. Approved so you'll, hear,
yeah you'll hear By, dirt how that? Happened and you
know cop car setting the world on.

Speaker 2 (01:01:17):
Fire i'll sing the pink part of you, HAPPY i need,
YOU i need, you bring you, in swoop you, in
out of the, theater, happy anywhere you. Know and there
might even be a song or Two Travis dinnings, Song,
abby if you know that SONG i wrote, THAT i
might play.

Speaker 1 (01:01:29):
That and my name Is, abby SO i don't, know
yeah that that that. List so it's gonna. Be it's
gonna be a FUN i, mean Obviously Brett jesus take
The whill And kelly so many. Hits so it's gonna.
Be and you, know the cool thing about these these
nights is everyone's, different but there is you, know you
play and sing together and there's just sort of a
magic that. Happens and So i'm excited for people Around

(01:01:51):
america that can't be In nashville get to experience the
specialness of these nights in their. Town, yeah it's.

Speaker 2 (01:01:59):
COOL i think sometimes we get so used to it
we forget how cool it.

Speaker 1 (01:02:02):
Is you'll see these. SONGWRITERS i was gonna, say, guys
but there's a woman. Too but guys who wrote these massive.

Speaker 2 (01:02:13):
Songs hear the story behind, it and then also sing
it the way that you kind of wrote, it which
is always cool because it's always a bit different the
way that it was kind of. Created so, YEAH i
hope people. Come and we talked about it way earlier
before you got. Here and then also and down on
the notes on the podcast you can see more information
and you can definitely look it up and come it's

(01:02:34):
gonna it's gonna be really great and they're gonna do
a replay of it on the eleventh as, Well, Tuesday march,
eleventh seven Pm local.

Speaker 1 (01:02:41):
