Speaker 1 (00:00):
What's up you guys are listening to the Velvet Edge podcast.
This is part two of my interview with Dirk Spentley.
Last week I talked to Dirk's about how he got
his start in his music career, some family life stuff,
and just what really matters to him most and what
success feels like. So this week I wanted to get
all of your questions answered. You guys submitted a lot
to me on my Instagram at Velvet's Edge, and I

(00:22):
asked them. I asked everything from how he takes his coffee,
to his favorite sexual position, to the pros and cons
of being famous, and if he'll ever bring the curls back.
I have a very strong reaction to that question. As
his groomer, I'm just saying, but listen up to get
all of Dirk's answers to these rapid fire questions and
also see what he has next on the present. Here's Dirks. Okay,

(00:48):
we're back, We're back. Okay. So I did ask my
followers on Velvet Edge what they wanted to know from you,
since you have a couple of just quick, rapid fire questions. Um,
what is your favorite part of the show. Do you
have like favorite song you love to perform. Gosh, that's
such a great question. It's like it'd be asking someone's
your favorite part of roller Coaster, and it's probably feel
like the show is designed that way. Like once we

(01:09):
work so hard setting the show up. I mean, it
starts with me and Dan just working on songs together
and trying to figure out what songs even want to do,
and then working on the flow and transitions, bringing the
band in, all the work deals in there, and the
crew and then the video lights, and there's like months
and months of rehearsals. It's like building a roller coaster.
And I do that for many reasons, primarily so that
the first show feels like the hundred show for the

(01:30):
fans that come out to that very first show, but
also for me. My work is done, I get to
get on the ride and the show pulls me along.
It's so fun, Like I don't have to think once
I go into that first song, I'm literally getting pulled
along this ride and it's so fun for me and
I get to like not worry about the actual physical
part of the ride the show. I get to worry
about stuff like raise your hands here, you know, or

(01:51):
scream here or all this stuff you're doing on a
roller coaster ride. You don't have to think about the
actual physical, you know, mechanics of it. So it's all awesome.
I mean, there's not one part of it don't like.
If there's a part I don't like, I try to
try to make the weakest parts of my show and
the weakest parts of my life into like the best.
So there's a part that, like the b stage, the
part out in the middle of the slow songs that's

(02:11):
not working, how do I make that like the best
part of the show. Like it's all it's all awesome.
I guess this The downbeat of Bernie Man when we
first walk on stage is uh is is awesome? It's
probably different every place to right, Like every night just
feels different. It's it's like running a race, where like
when you're running long distances or something and you know
and you know that as a runner, like when you

(02:31):
cross that threshold where all a sudden it stops hurting,
It's like, WHOA, Now I could feel like I could
run forever. You reach that spot differently at every show.
You know, if it's a Thursday, it might take a
little longer, or a supposed to Saturday, it's right away. Yeah,
I just never know. And then some places are just
crazier than others, and you you never know when you
across that spot where all a sudden it's like, wow,
I'm inside the bubble here where it's like it's all

(02:54):
happening and it's just like there's the transformation of energy
from me to the audience is like seamless and we're
one and it's an amazing feeling. But I always find
a way to get there every night. Um, And but
it's different spots. I guess, Yeah, what is yours? Now
that you're back drinking? What's your drink of choice? I
try to stay um, you know, on the road. Before

(03:18):
I go on stage, I'm drinking. It's probably a little
like just vodka, just clean vodka, soda VA soda um.
And then you know, if I'm off the stage, that's
and maybe some tequila. But I never drink. I don't
drink dark liquor ever anymore, very very rarely. What happens

(03:39):
when you do, it's bad things. I drink so much
Jim Being is it like Hank Junior, like Jim Beans?
So I like Jim Being. I drink a billion gallons
of it. I just I just don't drink as much
as I used to it. That's like a sipping thing. Um,
I like beer. Yeah, like, I mean, I like but
like but heavy. You know, the most of the bodisor
products are my thing. And with cast one, yeah, Um,

(04:01):
will you ever bring the curls back? I wish I could.
I know. I think it looked like stringy. I don't
think it had the same like you know that look
I'm talking about. There's guys out there and long and
like like stringy curls. It wouldn't be the same. Like
my hair is pretty good. But I look at guys
like Thomas Redd, I'm like, I was laughing. I see him.

(04:22):
I always telling them, like, dude, your hair is like zoysia,
like a golf course. I guess you could put a
golf ball on the top of trs like head and
it wouldn't even it wouldn't even move, It just stay
up there. Here's so thick. I don't have that that
that same level of density anymore. So I don't think
the curls will look I saw some pictures of me
playing with I played a gig with bon Jovi in Kentucky.

(04:43):
We somehow went it went up on stage together singing
and I'm like, wow, I looked that looked like hell
And it was like that curl look is not is
I mean, there's a picture of me and the night
there's my sister and my brother and like it's like
really high, it's there's it's just not a good look. Yeah,
that's not a good look. I would have to retire. Yeah,

(05:05):
it's a hard look for Keilly. During a video shoot
with s Windy outside, whole piece moves over to the side. Okay,
My followers are also perverts, so they asked this every
time I have a mail on what is your favorite
sexual position? They do. It's the weirdest thing to ask.
I guess my favorite is whatever. You know, the person

(05:25):
i'm with its favorite. Okay, so you're a giver. Yeah,
I'm good. I'm kind of good either any everyway. You know,
that's a lot of variety. Is like the key to venues,
the key to food. Okay, okay, just a lot of variety,
which you know, I don't know, it's I don't I can.

(05:46):
I would hate be stuck with one particular over and over. Yeah, right,
I think that's the jackhammer. I'll get you back for
that one a little bit. Okay, Wow, my guys listening
out there is not yours? What I know? That's not yours?

(06:07):
My question? No, that's not your favorite? Is that my favorite?
Definitely not my favorite? You know that. Okay, we're gonna
move on the video cast because all your followers out
there and you know, bright Pinky just turned Yeah, you
flipped the script on me there. Um, Okay, what is

(06:27):
the hardest thing your listeners have, like if they like
submitted to like what their favorite? Overall? I like, who's
followers based instead of basing like demographics and like, oh
I have the eight thirty five demo? Really rocket My
fans mostly females or a minor countries. You're like, well,
matuity of my fans. But for you know, doggy style,

(06:48):
I mean, what would that say about your podcast? That's interesting?
You know, I have a feeling it's not that because
I have a lot of female followers. Maybe God, this
has taken a turn. My mom is going to be like, wow,
this is the guy you work for. I live on
a bus, so it doesn't take much to prim the

(07:09):
pump here to go down that road. Jesus. Okay, I'm
gonna ask him one later. I'll see how this is good.
What is the best thing about being famous? And what's
the hardest thing about being famous? Such a great question.
I love, like not I don't feel like I'm famous.
I really don't know. Yeah, I don't. I don't feel
that way. I would never like put my I've never

(07:30):
walk around that mindset because that would just be such
a terrible way I think to like to approach the world.
You know, I go to the supermarket. I hate to
walk in supermarket and I'm famous. I usually walk in
the supermarket someone recognizes me. I'm like, oh right, I'm
the guy that sings because I don't feel that way.
But I'm like, yeah, I was just at the gravel
yard there. I had to go get gravel in the

(07:51):
back of my truck for this driveway. That's like the
these these drainage pipes are exposed because they got washed away,
and I get bigger rocks. I learned all about like
gravel yards, which is fascinating. You should go like driving
to gravel yards sometime. But the first one I drove
into that, I drove in there and I walked up
I'm like, please don't recognize me because I just want
to be normal, dude. And they're they're playing on Marana
Lambert song and I was like, and they're like, you know,

(08:14):
we can't put gravel into the back of a truck.
He just against our rules here. So the next place
I want to didn't have me. The third place I
want to they were so country. They didn't listen to
country music. It was a great They didn't no idea who.
I was like, they no time for listening like contemporary
country music. And I was like, I love this. I
love be able to walk around just it's there's you
know people, you know, you might think, oh, it's must

(08:35):
to be amazing to be famous and all that stuff.
I feel like it's so amazing to have your an
amenities at the right word, walk around like nobody knows you,
like amazing you can see like just be totally and
I were I fight hard to have that, and I
think by just being as normal as possible. And you know,
I was in Whiskey Row in my bar there night
and like it's the first hour and a half. Everyone's

(08:57):
like looking and taking pictures and I'm like, I'm just
gonna keep doing what I'm doing, and eventually hopefully I
just get you. Just I seem like a regular person
to you. It was amazing. I tapped it from of
at one point, I'm like, nobody's looking at me. This
is amazing, you know. It's like I'm kind of selfish.
And then I really want everyone's attention when I'm on stage,
I want every last bit of their attention and the
seconds over I just I work hard, just be treated

(09:20):
like I'm not private. I just want to be regular
and build a walk around, do my own stuff and
and not have handlers and people always around me. I
want to I drop my car off today at Carl
Black Chevrolet. I want to be able to do that
by myself. And I'd like it's like doing stuff like
being mobile. I think, like famous least like lack of mobility,

(09:41):
and that's that would be a big dragon. That's the
reason why I've turned out a lot of like on
air TV stuff, because I'm like, I don't want to like,
if I'm gonna be more famous, they're better be like
some sort of correlation, like more people coming out to
my show, and if it's just a commercial for the
sake of fame, it's just that's a terrible way, Like
why would you want to do that? Now more people
know who you are, right, but they're obviously there's perks

(10:04):
and there's fun stuff you get to do. Is that
one of your favorite things? Like and you know, when
I go to the National Arena watch Pretz games, I
know everyone in there and you know that can help
me out with parking. Um, so just some like easy
perks like yeah, I don't think, like I don't want
to think to me, it's like free stuff now, It's
like that could have used some free stuff back in
the day, Like I need it now because free stuff

(10:26):
isn't free, Like yeah, we come this trip and be
here with us, come to this island or come blake
off here. It's like, yeah, it sounds like a lot
of like work. Yeah I'll just pay for it and no,
just let me like I'll just go on my own.
But yeah, there it's it's now. Just tell my kids names.
It's not about being famous. But you know, and you
know recognize when I go to the shows, these people

(10:47):
like me. But the reason they like me is because
these songs. You know, I'm the guy that sings these
songs and these songs are part of the fabric of
their life, and um, that's why I try not to
get too involved, not that I would want to, but
in politics or any sort of debates and stuff is like,
then you'taining the song containing the whole experience with the listener,
and you know, it's kind of just kind of knowing
what you do and why people like you being okay

(11:09):
with that. I'm the guy that sings drunk in a play.
I sing some better songs and more meaningful songs, but
a lot of people know me he's that guy, and
that's totally cool. And there's people out there to do
amazing things about My brain only has enough space to
remember them like one little thing they do, and that's
who they are in my life, and that's the joy
they bring me. And that's why I kind of associate
with them and don't try to like go over in

(11:30):
this other arena start talking about politics or something like,
you're not the politics guy, You're the for me, You're
the you're this guy, sports guy. You know you satisfied
my sports hitch. Don't like, I don't want to hear
about your you know that stuff. As soon as I
have like a big you know a few followers, you know,
because amount followers on social media that you can just
go and say whatever you want to say. It's like

(11:50):
they didn't start following me because of my personal views
or my private life. They started following me because I'm
the guy that sings what was I thinking? You know,
So you're gonna keep that in mind. It's not about
being famous about it's about being the guy that sings
those songs. Um, since you're sipping your coffee, how do
you drink your coffee bulletproof? Hot? You're back on the bulletproof. Yeah, okay,

(12:12):
me too, Me too. Yeah, trying to skip not eveny
food till like till about noon. So just okay, I
work out and worked out this morning six am. You
get a shed. I went to shed, getting back on track,
thir Dana row Wow, doing the trying to not you know,
sixt they're a manute fasting, trying to just kind of
I feel it's unbelievable. The correlation between working out and

(12:33):
like and blue sky is still hurt. But for me
like exercise and overall like mental health, like feeling good,
I mean, yeah, it's it's it's such a direct correlation.
And the only time I can really do as a
six am. I can't do anything later because I just
like it's sometimes did at eight o'clock. But it's just

(12:54):
I hate when you're in my workout class. Came in
the other day the shed. Say what do you call
that kind of training? It's the hardest work out our industry,
but it's like circuit training. Okay. So Dirks and I
both go to the same gym, and when I walked
in the other day, he was in my class, which
is always a little disappointing to me because I know

(13:15):
I'm gonna have to work harder. He's like, what was
that doing those ropes? And he comes and talk shit
in my ear, you can do it harder. This morning,
I was in there and I was like, because I'm
just trying to get back into it, and this guy,
a trainer, walked in. There's a bunny of mine. He's like,
there's a partner workout, and I was like, oh god,
that's the worst. I hate the partner workout going so hard.

(13:36):
Oh my gosh, Okay, so bulletproof coffee shed workout. Do
you have a funny or what's the like the most
embarrassing career moment you can think of. Yeah, well, if
you google like or YouTube my name and the word falls,
there's like several videos of me wiping out on stage. Yeah. Yeah.

(13:57):
The worst was like I was playing Western Kentucky and
it was the top of the show and he said
these huge ramps on the side of the stage and
I started one side the ramp kind of surprise people
by coming up the top of the show, which was
pretty easy, and that run down across the other side
of the stage. Um, so we owned the ramps, but
I didn't own the stage. And stages go between four
and five feature. There's no like uniforms stage, so there'd

(14:19):
always be there perfect scene, perfect scene between this ramp
or like a foot gap. And I was like running
one time. I wasn't expecting the gap and so my
knee wasn't ready for it, and I kind of lost
my balance and I tried to do like a roll
and just keep moving and I just like fell flat
in my face. And it's like I have an hour
and a half to go, this is the top of
the show. All the mystique has gone, all the cool

(14:39):
is thet happened. It's gonna be like a yeah, like
I'll just do like I saw a mission impossible. I
just do that thing Tom Cruise does and keep going. No,
it just flattened on my face, and it's like, okay,
we'll be here for an hour and a half. Thanks
a lot, folks. I'm gonna run now, kind of walk
back up and then one and trying to look cool again.
But I know it's like done here. Did you comments

(15:01):
on it or you just kept trying to pretend like that?
I think I just kept going. I've one time in Detroit,
I did like I thought I was Bruce Springsteen did
like this knee slide, and I just on the thrust
and kept sliding right off the thrust into the first row.
Was poor lady's face. She's so excited. I was getting
closer and then she like horrified. Um, I've chipped teeth

(15:21):
from microphones. I've torm a c l Chesney, I've I've
not spend enough time like those last few seconds in
the bathroom kind of you can wiggle, you can dance
for the last drop, So always in your pants and
walking on the stage in the nice wet spot. I
ripped my jeans down there one time too, like five
songs into a show and my sister was at that
show in Denver, and she's so excited. She said, the

(15:44):
best time. She's in the pit and like, I looked
down her, She's just like horrified. I'm like, what I
looked down? There was a huge underwear. I had underwear on.
It wasn't a jill On situation. I had a full
underwear on, but still pretty embarrassing. Oh my god, was
that that Leopard skin tidies were kind of you didn't
want those? Kidding? Okay, this one comes to you from

(16:11):
probably your number one fan? Is this podcast giving you
a nerbo? Wow? Is that from? Is that from Mary? Oh?
My gosh called it? That's it's gonna be a Nervous's
gonna be a curbo. Give me like, Kelly, can you
explain to the people what a nervo is? Oh gosh,
nerbo makes nerbo? How do how do it? Definitely bus stock?

(16:35):
I don't know. This is the things I learned on
the road. Yeah, So nervo is like a nervous boner.
Eighth grade, a lot of light grade boys getting So
that's what How when it starts, you gonna walk to
the front of classroom and you got a nerbou. Didn't
you tell me? It happens like on plane rides or guys.
Anytime our bass player cast fees me. I think we

(16:55):
call him nerves for a little while. I think you
you know, he's just diagnosis. There's a sent him. Yeah,
I'm much like active leg syndrome. It's kind of like
a active uh Johnson syndrome, but so nervebo. But you
can kind of apply with anything, right, I guess so
you apply the word anything with it with boner curbo curbo,
yeahbolokelbo calbo. I just want to teach tell the guys

(17:20):
that I love that kelbo. Um. Okay, what is next
on the horizon for Dirk Spanley? You have so you
can we tell people you have a bar now called
Whiskey Row in Nashville. If people don't know, I should go.
I frequent the play. Yeah you do. You're there all
the time, actually table because you usually you can name
my booth calbo yeah, um okay. So we also have

(17:42):
this desert Sun clothing line. Yeah, tell people about that. Yeah,
you know what was planning on getting into. But these
guys um kind of contact. We came out and saw
a show A couple of years ago, and they're like,
you know, we like a lot of stuff that you know,
our friend Annie, he's got me over the ears, like
vinished T shirts and beat up jeans and boots and

(18:03):
flannels and check shirts and all stuff. And then they
had these they're working on these clothes, and I was
it was a lot of stuff that I would normally
wear and lots of us see my fans wearing, and
I want to do some work together. So I was
kind of like I was interested in a little time
when boy wasn't like a rushed thing. But um, we're
able to get my stylist Annie, Yeah, you want to
give her shut out, give her a shot. We've also

(18:23):
I've also done a podcast not too long ago, tells
you justin Timberlake. Yes, she's legit. She I got her
involved and just working on ideas and designs, and everyone
who Desert Sound was like, so like just so I
wouldn't I want to do it. I don't do anything
less at this point unless it's like fun. And one
thing I learned was like when I was trying to

(18:43):
quit drinking there for a little while, it's like it's
either a big yes or just to know, Yeah, if
you want to make your life simple, things like you
really want to do something or you don't, and that's
just a lot of like your decision making on like
this shout out to this This was like so like, yeah, man,
these guys are fun, they're creative, they're a go getters.
They're just it's a great idea and it's just so

(19:07):
easy and they're so like they love working with with
with Annie, which is really important to me. They're the
collaborative like that. So it's been really fun. I love
the clothes I wear every not on stage. It's so
easy like style, it's really my style. It's nicest reaching
the bag and be like, okay, wear this T shirt.
Um I do kind of as a I do get
locked and wearing a lot of the same stuff over
the years on stage. It's like, I know, I used

(19:29):
gonna call from Mary Hilliard my managers, like time to
retire the Harley Davidson T shirt. I've seen it for
the last like eight shows. But it's like you're already
to walk on stage. You're like, ah, this show, this
shirt you know, just makes you feel good, you know what.
It brings me joy. To quote my friend Marie condo.
There sparks. It sparks joy, so I'm gonna like wear

(19:51):
it again and uh so, but a lot of a
lot of the all the desert sounds that have really
sparks a lot of joy. So where can people find this?
Is there? This's a website as it sold in stores
and awhere, I don't know notes on a you know,
flagging anthem as the parent company flagging. And I think
we're in like you know places where I when I
used to buy stuff shopped a lot the buckle. Yeah,

(20:14):
I'm probably missing on a lot of places, like I
should know this stuff on the top of my baby.
Just checked the website. Yeah, flagging anthem, but it's it's
cool stuff. So livings the current single video coming out?
Do you know when the video will be out? Right
after days um Awards and Me and Knox in a
day in the life of Me and Knox all this
stuff we do when I when I kidnapped him from

(20:34):
from pre pre school and just go make him hang
with me for the day. So that was one of
my favorite videos we've shot a long time too. I
wish I'd been in a better mood. I was so fried.
I was so fried it was like we played North Dakota,
one of the best shows, that all best shows the
tour were like this one of the shows. You're like,
we're snowed in that the crew can't leave. They're gonna
spend the night there. You know. It's just like, oh man,

(20:56):
this could be not this is not gonna be like
and I wouldn't watch during John parties that and it's like, wow,
these people are like, this is me be the best night.
It was so and I gave her that was it.
I had nothing left to give, and I came home.
We started shooting the video that morning Sunday, you know,
coming there's like, you know, a bunch of people in
the house. And then Monday and Tuesday and I was
so fried. I was just done. I wish i'd been
like I didn't. I didn't. I could have got a

(21:18):
really should have probably got a haircut and probably should
have shaved that my you know beard off. It was
just looked like crap, felt like crap. But Knox was
just such a rock star. Um. But then I went
to Colorado for a few days and and then I've
been out at this farmhouse for a little while. So
I'm fully recharged. But yeah, he had Knox carried the day.
He was like such a positive, fun guy. It's so fun. Yeah. Well,

(21:39):
you know what, I don't want to say too much.
I want people to just see the video. So yeah,
is there anything else in the works we should know
about tour? No, this is at three shows this weekend.
I'm done. Um, just doing some living, taking advantage of
this beautiful Tennessee spring, and uh, not really working on
a new This is a nice part of the cycle
where I'm only two singles in, so it's it's not

(22:01):
time to get to start thinking about another album, which
is kind of nice, and so I can just concentrate
on on the road. And when I'm on the roading
is concentrated on home improvement projects. Um, building a shelf
in the garage right now, trying to clean out a
hot tub, nasty, nasty work, working on my you know,
I've got my cameras up so I can start tracking
these deer and oh my god, this version of you

(22:23):
is so confusing to me. But we'll see how this
plays out. Okay, this is the last question. This is
my personal question. I'm just curious from this for you,
about this from you? So when all of this is
said and done. We've talked about this before a little bit,
but when you look back at your career, what do
you think is going to make you the most proud.

(22:44):
I think they'll make me the most proud is just
seeing the way my kids turn out. You know, that'll
be the sign of like, whether I did a good
job or not. There's no there's no distinguishing between like
music and like life, or music and marriage or music
and or anything. It's like there's just one experience, you know,
it's it's called life. And so if I look back
and I'm like, man, my kids turned out all right,

(23:04):
they're not assholes. You know, they're good people, and they're
they're good good jobs. Because you you in my thing,
you see a lot of like, you know, a a lot
of kids get messed up from like their parents careers.
You know, it's it's such a bright sun in their life.
It's just all consuming. I just don't want to have
that effect on them. And um, so the broad answer

(23:25):
to be, like, if my kids turned okay, then I
feel like it did a good job. I don't know,
you know that every person ever we ever encountered on
the road, you know, I really got on my way
and it's not hard to do, but because I really
appreciate that the folks that make this thing happen, local
security people. You know, you go backstage, there's fifty people
in the yellow shirts sitting outside the dressing rooms, you know,
today walk away feeling like I've treated them respectfully and

(23:47):
treated them well too. Um, all the catering folks, a
lot folks that work with my band and crew, do
they have a good experience and you know it was
was this a joy from them to be part of?
Obviously are fans I you know, I can kind of
answer that. You know, I look down there see a
lot of same fans that after night, and so it
kind of forced me and always keep pushing forward to
make sure every shows different than the one they saw before,

(24:09):
and they see them. I'm trying to improve and what
I do. It's not some sort of like victory lap.
I think it just being the way people remembered you
as being, um, you know, where you're compassionate and kind
and and uh fun to be around and and uh
interested in in there and other people's lives not just
your own. I don't know, that's probably love that yeah,

(24:30):
I think that's a good Are you done now, because
I'm not understating, I'm right to ask you some questions now, No, no, no,
no, no no, that's not so the guy, oh my god
on halfway off for this is not this is not
desutely ask whatever question you think. We actually have to

(24:53):
go get you ready, because so we have to go
back to work. You're lucky you to get to start,
you know, grooming, grooming the air and getting the beard
in place and getting the curls. Number what are you calling?
Number six thousand five was out of place. I can't
stay when that happened. Thank you for doing this. Yeah,
it was fun. I'll have you on Very Cavalry next. Okay,

(25:13):
was awesome. Thank you. Yeah. I'm ready. I'm ready to
make my teeth my podcast debut. I'm ready my debut
