Despite it being quite a common crime, burglary victims can experience serious mental health impacts.

A home in the Wellington suburb of Southgate was recently targeted and a man experienced serious injuries trying to restrain the alleged offender.

Victim Support says it's a hugely violating crime to experience and claims it takes about eight months on average for burglary victims to feel safe in their homes again.

Victim Support New Zealand spokesperson Petrina Hargrave says a number of reactions are normal.

She says there's definitely a sense of anger, mistrust, isolation, fear, and anxiety -- and it's very normal to be jumpy afterwards.
