(00:04):
Let's get your weekends started early. So sit down, get comfortable, and
for yourself a fresh cup of coffeewith Mel. That's right, melkrypptit is
back every Friday morning on coffee withMel. Mel will get you caught up
with all the local buzz and happeningsaround Lovely Ames. Partially because his wife
couldn't stand him in the house allthe time. With us retirement, Mel
(00:27):
is back talking with the local moversand shakers and story counting about what's going
on in our local communities. Sohere he is, Mel, Crippit have
coffee with Mel. Mel in themorning on fourteen thirty kas I will welcome
to coffee with Mel. And Iam excited, I really am. And
(00:48):
I was unaware of a great locationfor Bethany Life Life Services right here in
La Lovely Aimes at five point fifteengrand Sweet two three. I've got that,
right, am, I right onthat Austin, Okay. And a
lot of people said, why didyou come back and do this show?
You retired, Why did you comeback and do the show? This is
(01:11):
a prime example for me. Iget to be with friends, and the
folks at Bethany Life have been friendsfor many many years. I can remember
my first visit up there, andAustin was talking about how nervous he was
the first time he and I met, And when I went up to new
places, I was a little nervoustoo. I knew I had to do
(01:32):
my thing, but you know, you're meeting new people and everything. I
felt so at home and amongst friendsimmediately. And that's not only the staff,
the staff which is excellent, butthe residents were so welcoming too.
So that's why I was excited tofind out that I could go a few
(01:53):
blocks down the street and get withmy friends from Bethany. And of course
I mentioned his name, but Iwould be remiss if I didn't introduce you
to Austin Mortvid, who is thedirector of Home and Community Based Services,
a service which I think many ofyou out there, especially if you're older
as I am, could utilize formany many reasons. But Austin, I
(02:16):
can remember the start of this programand how it was slowly working its way
into people's minds and lives. Andit's come a long way since then,
Yeah, it sure has. Wecelebrated ten years this last summer, which
is incredible. Being the first initiativelike this of its kind in the state.
(02:38):
You're right in the beginning, itdoes kind of go slow, but
with we've had over one hundred andseventy members sign up at this time,
which is incredible. A lot ofsmart individuals that know that they want to
take advantage of staying in their homeas long as possible. And you don't
want to be dumb. You don'twant to call you dumb. So you
need to find out more about theprogram, and let's talk a little bit
(03:02):
about what services you provide. Giveme an idea some of the things that
you do. So when people signup for our program Life Choices, they're
signing up to be able to agein place. So we provide all of
the services that they would need, whether it's a homemaker, a CNA,
somebody to come help with the dishes, do the laundry, maybe make meals,
(03:24):
help them to and from the doctor. The neat thing about that is
staying in your own home doesn't justyou don't only need healthcare. So we
have a full environmental services team thatcan come help scoop your driveway if you
gut you know, or mow thelawn. They're the ones there to get
on those ladders that we may notnecessarily want you on, so that they
(03:45):
keep you safe. Yeah, anda type of thing like changing a light
bulb for you. It's just thatalways impressed me. I thought, well,
I can change a light bulb, but some of those are a little
bit out of reach. Sure,And we don't want you on that ladder.
Nobody wants you on that ladder. And the thing we want most is
to keep you around and keep youin your home because we know how that
(04:08):
important is to good health. Thereare situations out there, obviously where you
must go somewhere else to get yourhealth taken care of. But as long
as you can stay home, it'sbeen proven that you live better and live
happier when you're in familiarity such asyour home. And I know many of
(04:28):
you already realize that. And Page, what do you think is it worth
hearing about it? Is? It'sa fun job for us. We keep
our members healthy and independent, andwe get to do a lot of fun
things like social events and health andwellness education. So I think it's worth
it. And I think you mentionedsomething that's kind of a side note there.
(04:51):
It isn't all business here. Youcome on out and shovel my lawn
or cut my driveway. But thethe thing is that there are the extra
little programs that go on that are, as you said, educating us as
to how it live a better andsafer life. Yeah, that's right.
Each of our members has an advocateor care coordinator, so we kind of
(05:14):
follow along your journey with you andmake sure you're still doing all of those
things that you want to do,so staying well, whether that's physically active
or having good nutrition, but wealso want you to be social and keep
doing all of those things that youhave been doing that are making you who
you are and keeping you independent.Awestin, do you still meet some resistance
(05:35):
out there? People not quite understandingjust how great this program is. Form
Yes all the time. So especiallywhen we send out our postcards for our
lunch and learns, lots of timeswe'll get calls back that just say,
I'm not ready to go into anursing home, and I want to make
sure I tell them, like, make sure you check out the card,
(05:55):
because our whole goal is to keepyou in your home. The cool thing
is is that with our program,if you ever do need to go to
a nursing home. We pay thatcost for you at one hundred percent.
So I think that's what One thingthat they don't understand is being able to
keep them in their home is ourprimary goal. As long as it's safe.
The moment that it's not, theydon't have to worry. So that
(06:16):
asset protection piece. The cost oflong term care is devastating, and you
know, making sure that we cannegate that for our members and help them,
you know, retain those assets, keep them in their home, and
then if they do need to go, we pay for those charges. Paige,
can you think of a facility ifthey're no longer able to stay at
(06:36):
home that they might utilize? Ithink so. We have the Households of
Bethany in Story City. It's agreat place to go. It is two
twelve La Fete, by the way, and you should pay them a visit
up there too, just to seethe facilities. It is a very village
type atmosphere in there. There's alittle bistro and all the amenities et cetera.
(07:01):
But more so I mentioned it greatstaff who you are number one priority,
and the staff takes care of you. You'll find all the things you
need and I think more importantly thatwhen you have visitors, those people who
love you and care about you, know that you are in the best possible
(07:24):
place you could be in your situation. I agree. I don't know why
you agree to you. He's easy, he is, Yeah, yeah,
it is. It is just anabsolute joy to be here. It's life
choices at Bethany. You want togive the phone number, yeah, five
one, five two nine zero sixseven five six, give us a call.
(07:47):
We would love to talk with youabout the program and just see how
we can help you at There's aspot for everyone in our continuum. And
I will tell you this much. They're the easiest folks to talk to.
The thing is, like mcgrahamy usedto say, mel, make sure your
ears are bigger than your mouth. And that's what they do so well.
(08:07):
They listen. They want to informyou of their services, but they listen
to your needs first and they cantell you how they can specialize those services
to you that you need. Andthat's important and you'll feel very comfortable.
It's no push, there's no shove, it's just excuse me. I better
(08:28):
get up to Bethany. But itis a situation where you have the final
decision and they're not going to houndyou or hunt you down. They're not
selling life insurance, but in away, it's a different kind of life
insurance. It's an insurance make youmaintain and keep a better life as we
(08:50):
get older, and a safer life. I would add that to anything else
we should throw in there, No, mel I like to say that instead
of insurance, we have assurance andthe assurance that we're going to take care
of you, but you're one hundredpercent correct where we keep you in the
driver's seat and we just help navigateaging services as you need them. I
like that line. Do you likethat line? I do? And if
(09:11):
people want to learn more, wedo have some lunch and learn presentations coming
up February thirteenth in Huxley at theBallad Golfin Country Club, and then March
twelfth is our next Ames presentation atthe Ames Country Club. And our website
also has a lot of information too, life choices at Bethany dot org.
Should they preregister for those, theyshould just to make sure that we have
(09:33):
enough lunches, so you can dothat through the website or by calling our
phone number. And I let Austindo the phone number you get to do
the website. So website is LifeChoices at Bethany dot org. All right,
sounds great, Thank you page,Thank you, Austin, thank you.

Cloudy's guys, I'm who thirteen meteorologistGabe pro with your latest forecast, and
you are listening to Mel in themorning. Mel is doing his coffee with
Mel routine, and yes, there'sthere's Mel right now. I am here.
Good morning to you, Mel.How are things going? Good morning,
(14:24):
Scott or as I like to say, covid, Yes, Scott co
or Mel mourning. Yes, wellwe'll have some of that giving me the
morning take morning. But anyway,it's good to hear you, Mel.
I'm glad, you're glad you're withus. I'm glad, I'm glad it's
you well, and I'm glad tobe with you, my friend, my
(14:45):
cohort and companion for over a yearand a half there, and good to
know that you're still around and ablymanning the board this morning something something like
that. But you're I've got goodnews for you. What's that They have
electrician here in this building, andyeah, and the outlet works. Some
(15:07):
people may remember the Titanic guy wasaboard last week when the ship started going
down. I'm sitting and having theconversation as we are now, and all
of a sudden my computer went darkand I couldn't figure it out, and
you couldn't hear my lovely voice.Mail, No, I couldn't hear your
(15:28):
lovely voice. But more importantly,I didn't have to look at your face.
Oh but the sight of that wasis we couldn't figure out what's going
on, And luckily Chuck Reid, salesman extraordinaire, was there with his computer,
and we managed in about ten minutesto get us back on the air.
But the funny part was the daybefore I went down to the outlet
(15:50):
thrift store. I asked the managerthere. I said, the only thing
I need is an outlet, andthat's it. Outlet and a table and
chairs and I'll be happy to go. And she says, well, some
of our outlets don't work, andI said, can you make sure I
have an outlet that works? Well, guess what we plugged in. I
(16:11):
was going along, I thought everythingwas swell, and it wasn't. I
was running on battery. The batterydied, the outlet didn't work. And
I'm telling you that was a littlebit devastating at the time. But today
there's outlet, there's electricity. Weshould be good. All the way through
(16:33):
Scott glad to hear it. Yeah, are you were in shorts today?
I mean it's spring, you knowI'm not. I couldn't quite figure that
one out, although I'll tell youmil walking out the front door, knowing
it was thirty four degrees felt likeheaven. Oh, I know, I
can't imagine Scott walks to work everyday, folks, not a long distance.
He doesn't need a shirp, aguide or anything in three blocks.
(16:59):
But I know that a couple ofweeks ago, in that below zero weather,
it was not a pleasant task.Ooh that wind till is something else.
Yeah, well, anyway, gladyou're there. This morning. I
had the great confidence since the captainof the ship is on board and we
will talk to you in a littlebit. Sounds good, Mel, Thanks
(17:21):
Scott. Yeah, And speaking offriends, I have a good one this
morning in Miles Morrow and he joinsus. Last time I told him I
saw him. I told him wason the big screen. I thought he'd
signed a Hollywood contract or something.I look up on the TV and I
said, wow, who's that stud? Who's that up on that screen?
(17:44):
And he was in Florida and hewas attending via telecommunications the noontime Kwanians meal
and meeting. I should say,it's not just a meal. I went
up there, saw a lot ofold friends up there. Tom Randall was
up there. I sat with JimConvers and his wife and saw Miles up
(18:06):
on the big screen, Mike Millerand I could go on and on.
Jerry was up there and Diurner andyeah, it's a great group that is
doing great work. And I gotto think because last year Miles and I
got together and he was collecting shoesat that time, and what you want
these? Yes, no, okay, he wants these. I'll give him
(18:27):
to you after the show. I'llwalk barefooto. But it was a great
cause and I think it caused Milesthat you guys are continuing to do absolutely.
Mail And first of all, beforewe start this interview, I want
to just represent the City of Amesa thank you mail for being back on
(18:48):
the air. We really missed youfor the short time you were gone,
so thank you, Thank you forcoming back. You're part of our culture.
It's deeply enriched. Now now yougive me your shoes. Now that
I've some good things right, Yes, I'm excited to announce we are going
to start our second annual shoe drivethis year. Last year was very successful
(19:10):
and we're challenging the City of Amesto maybe double what we did last year.
Last year we ended up with justunder three thousand pairs of shoes now
and we are hoping the generosity ofAmes will show itself again the bright light
that it is to really double orwho knows, maybe triple our collection for
(19:33):
this year. Again. We're goingto start April one and run through June
three. Last year, we hadseventeen different locations where we had box receptacles,
and we hope to have maybe twicethat number of locations this year to
make it easy for everybody to dropoff their shoes. So I want to
thank Ames again for their generosity lastyear and look forward to other announcements.
(19:57):
I'm luckily unfortunately our group joined theAmes Chamber just about six weeks ago,
so we are going to leverage ournetwork through the Chamber and the community calendar
to really get the word out thisyear because unfortunately, we didn't do as
good a job as we thought wewould in announcing this drive. So this
(20:19):
year you'll be bombarded in press andon the air. Thanks to Mel and
other sources for spreading the good newsabout the shoe drive. I want to
do. I humbly say this,Miles, but twenty nine hundred pairs of
those shoes were my wives. Ithought they at least that Mel. Yes,
(20:41):
well, we did take our inventorydown a lot, and I'm sure
we can some more and we'll bedonating for sure. Exactly. Yes,
what was amazing to me. Thepart that no one knows about in public
is that the quality of the shoeswas unbelievable. We had a lot of
new shoes. We had some vendorsthat actually went on bought new shoes and
(21:04):
threw them in the boxes. AndI think out of all of those shoes,
I had to throw one pair awaybecause the sole was off. So
it was not only amount, butthe quality of the shoes was very impressive.
And Miles, the only thing wehaven't told them is what are you
guys doing with those shoes? Well, we have partnered with a nonprofit in
(21:26):
Orlando, Florida called Funds to Orgs. They started fundraising in twenty and twelve
mil and since that initiation of thateffort, they have contributed eleven million dollars
to fundraising groups and that represents abouttwenty thousand groups since twenty twelve, and
(21:52):
they've rescued thirty two million shoes fromthe landfill. But the answer your question,
there are twenty one underserved basically thirdworld countries that receive these shoes and
they are repurposed and basically used bymostly women owned micro enterprises to generate incomes
(22:15):
for families. So it helps bringfamilies out of poverty, It keeps the
shoes out of landfill, and mostimportantly, at least selfishly, I say,
we generate funds that we grant tochildren's groups in Story County, so
all of the money stays in StoryCounty. We're helping these folks in these
other countries take themselves out of poverty. And you know, if we collect
(22:40):
what I say about three thousand pairsof shoes last year at six thousand this
year, they're not going our landfillhere, so that's where the shoes go,
and us with the effort really helps. This is a program with a
lot of sol's that's I mean thatboth ways, so welity, so oul,
But this is one that you canparticipate in. I know every one
(23:03):
of you out there has an oldpair of shoe sitting on the basement stairs
or in that closet way in theback that you haven't utilized for many,
many years. And here's a goodway to put them to good use.
And it's easy. All those dropoffs, there's no excuse for not finding
one nearby exactly, Mel, thankyou for that promotion. Now I have
(23:23):
some other exciting news, which isan annual event, our up coming pancake
Day. Oh yes, and bythe way, we will have boxes there.
So announcing now if you have anyshoes, we're going to start collecting
them on March one and March two, so bring an extra pair if you
need to have some to walk backhome in. And consequently we're going to
(23:48):
kick off at that time and againwe have this. We'll have this up
on the community calendar. Adult ticketsare ten dollars. Children which are aged
six to eleven or five. I'vechildren under six are free, So bring
all your kids that are under sixand all your neighbor's kids and fill up
on pancakes, sausage and eggs.Yeah, and I will tell you this
(24:11):
much. Strapping a pair of shoeson your knee caps doesn't work. You
don't get those free pancakes. Itried that a couple of times, but
it's a lot of fun. Youwon't go away hungry. If you do,
it's your fault. The Kawanians aregreat hosts. They man those griddles
like nobody's business. I had thehonor and privilege many years ago of being
(24:32):
a celebrity riddler. And I can'tremember who was standing next to me,
but I obviously wasn't doing it right, but got a lot of tips.
And now I make pancakes all thetime. But you go through if there's
a line, and there will be, I'm going to tell you that it
is that popular. But it movesso quickly and so well, it won't
(24:55):
take any time at all. It'sa great way to start your morning,
to end your evening. A mealyou won't have to make. The Kwantians
will do for you. And againit's a nominal fee. What's the charge
again, miles? Adults are ten, Children from six to eleven or five
under six is free, all right? And the dates again in times okay,
(25:18):
next would be March one, whichis a Friday from four thirty to
seven, and Saturday morning March twofrom seven to one. Okay, okay.
It's like I say, it's agreat way to go. It's a
great cause. It is a Aimestradition. The Kwantians pancake breakfast because I
(25:41):
look or feed, I should sayfeed, not just breakfast, because they're
serving all times of day out there. I want to put him one more
plea and Miles is going to lookat me and say, where's your membership,
mister? But I want to tellyou this is a great group,
as I mentioned to be I'm apart of to give you that good feeling
(26:03):
of participating in your community and helpingyour community to be a better place to
live. And I'll be honest withyou. I was talking to Tom Randall
as I mentioned last time I wasthere, and Tom said, Mel He
said, we need new members. We just absolutely, as big as our
hearts are, we can't do itall. We want to do more and
(26:26):
if we have more members we cando that. And it's pretty easy to
join, isn't it. Miles.Oh? Absolutely? And again all of
the funds as I mentioned earlier StanStory County, and we have new fundraisers
every year. So if we hadmore members, we could do more fund
raising to give back to the StoryCounty community. I always think of when
(26:52):
I was in the MSGACS and Ijoined up and I found out what having
a small membership can do to youras a member. I immediately got part
of the sandbox Fell program was goingon. I was immediately in charge of
the fourth of July celebration that year, and I mean, I love doing
it all, but it was alot of work and it could have been
(27:14):
delegated a little more. We dowant to wear these folks out just because
they're kind and generous. We wantto keep them kind and generous. And
I don't think you will ever changethat in the people I saw there.
But it's a good chance to getout there, a great get together.
You'll make some new friends and you'llhelp our community. So please please,
(27:37):
Who should they contact myles? Well, we have a website that is actually
under construction, but I would saythat if you go to the chamber website,
that's the easiest fine to find us, easier place to find us.
Yes, now that you're chamber members, Yes we're chamber members. Let me
suggest to Mel that anyone possible interestedin joining come to our meetings a Friday
(28:04):
at noon. We get together eleventhirty, usually have a meal, and
just come as a guest and attendas a guest just to see what we're
all about. We have wonderful speakersalmost every Friday about aims, about Iowa
State, about programs, nonprofits forprofits, and it's just a wonderful way
(28:27):
to get connected. No, nowthe meetings are they held in the same
spot every week? Well, we'recurrently meeting at the first United Methodist Church,
so the answer is yes. Weare exploring maybe some other locations because
as we grow, we may needa bigger space, so that may change.
(28:47):
We're not sure of that yet.Okay, Myles is always, thank
you so much for coming. Greatto see you, my friend. All
Right, noon, Coonians. Theshoe drive is on the Pancake Breakfast around
the corner. Out support our newKowanians because they're supporting you in every way
that they can. Oh, whatis it about? I talk about the
(29:08):
Noontime Kowanians and it makes me feelgood. I know the good work that
they do. There's another group herein town, and I'm proud to have
a brick in front of their buildingas one of the I won't say an
originator, but I was aware ofit very early on. And that's why

years here in lovely Ames. Ohyeah, yeah. His uh, his
name is Mel Crippen. Uh.He often goes by Mel in the morning.
But I'm hearing he's been replaced bya guy named Coffee with mel Is.
This is this true? It's true? What with Mel? Coffee with
(33:36):
mel? Is? That is thata different guy? Oh? Different guy?
Okay, yeah, I got Igot to change. I had to
change the name of the program.I have to protect myself. You know.
The names were changed to protect theguilty. Oh the guilty. Uh
yeah, well I was here toprotect the innocent. I guess we're gonna
have to get you off the lineand bring somebody else on here. Maybe
maybe a good idea, Maybe Melin the Morning would stand in for you.
(34:00):
Collect there we go, there,Mel in the Morning. He is
over at Bethany. What is Bethany? Life in Ames? It's Bethany Life
Services, and it's right here atfive point fifteen Grand Sweet two three stiffle
building I call it. I thinkthey used to be called pile office building.
(34:22):
May still very convenient, and they'reready and willing to talk to you
if you're interested in services that areprovided to keep you at home, to
keep you safe, and if youdon't get to stay at home, they
can help you get off to thatretirement or retirement or place you're going to
(34:44):
live as you get older, ifyou need some assistance. They've got a
great place, Bethaney at Home upat Story City. Up there, it's
just absolutely marvelous. In fact, next week, Scott, you kind of
let this to me, but Iwill be with Bethany Life again at one
(35:07):
of their other places in Story City. It's called Timberland Village and it is
living. It's assisted living or it'sapartment living, and they have some town
homes up there. It's just amarvelous place in a great environment, very
very comforting on the east edge ofStory City. And we'll be up there
(35:29):
next week doing the program, soat least week, but this week,
where can people get a hold ofYou're talking about Stephil Nicholas as being a
reference point there. If other peoplewant to stop on buy and see Bethany
here and names where do they gothey've addressed, it'd be the Stefel building
five point fifteen grand parking lot isin back of the building, and just
(35:54):
pull up there, head up thestairs, turn to your left when you
get to the top of the stairs, and in the door, and you'll
find Bethany Life very easily. Andyou can give Mel some grief. You
can give me some grief, andgive Austin some grief. Page you can
give anybody that's working here grief. But what they're going to give you it
rhymes with grief. Do you knowwhat that is? Scott? Relief?
(36:16):
Relief? You got it, that'sit. Relief from a lot of worries
and and stresses in your life. You'll find him here at Bethany Life Services.
All right, we will continue onwith the program. Scott, Are
you done? Oh? Gus,am I ever done? Find Mel?
Go ahead? Yeah? Well, something people my age don't want to hear
(36:36):
is you're done. I'm pulling theplug. Yeah, yeah, we're not
pulling the plug in fact, we'replugged in. We got power this week
power to call me with mel andwe have guests I mentioned Cares here from
YSS, an organization I proudly watchedgrow over the many, many years,
(37:00):
and I see Karras sitting here andI think about all the people I have
met over the years that have workedthere, and I've always said, you
know what it isn't for the money. It never is. It's dedication.
Is you know, getting into thistype of business, You're not going to
(37:21):
get rich, but you are goingto be enriched in what you provide for
the young people that they service. And as I say, that ripples,
it's a ripple effect that touches notonly them but also those who are part
of their lives. And they dothat as well as anybody. That many
of their programs have been copied nationallyin other areas of the country to great
(37:45):
success. But nobody does it betterthan Why, says Kara. Well,
I agree with you, and thanksfor that great introduction, right, yes,
Well, we were just talking overthe break the legacy of George Blue.
So we celebrated that yesterday with arecognition lunch and that we have every
year. But WHYSS is approaching fiftyyears in existence, founded right here in
(38:09):
AIMES in nineteen seventy six, originallyas Youth and Shelter Services, a shelter
for homeless and runaway youth. Andyou can't be in that work long without
realizing the added wrap around services thatare needed with kids. And so we
moved into behavioral health supports for thefoster care system, transition services to identify
(38:34):
housing, jobs, education, thingsthat we could do for young people,
young adults and kids. And whenyou're in those spaces and you see the
needs that are there, you think, how could we get ahead of this?
Right a step ahead of it.And so a tremendous prevention program was
born Before and after Schoolcare, theYSS Kids Club. I bet a lot
of your listeners are getting ready todrop kids off there. So we're in
(38:59):
nine districts, eleven programs of kidscloud, before and after school caret mentoring
program, education in schools, justtrying to create hope and opportunity for kids
around the state. Yeah. Iwas going to say, from its humble
beginnings of helping a lot of homelessyouth and still in that business too,
(39:20):
in fact, have expanded those servicesand correct Cara, you can correct me
at any time. But beyond theborders of Ames, Iowa. Des Moines
has also has a shelter down there. I think one of the major moves
that I thought was why is SASdecided there was a need beyond being eighteen
(39:44):
years of age, because many manyyears ago you hit eighteen and it seemed
like all the strings were cut.All right, you're on your own.
Here you go. We did thebest we could get out there. But
then realizing there were still many manychallenges for people into their early twenties,
etc. And you've developed programs forthat. Yeah, absolutely, we know
(40:06):
that brains are still developing until midtwenties. Right, those are still youth,
Those are still young people. Thinkabout the help that you got from
your parents after you turned eighteen,Right, you're not done needing somebody to
lean on a healthy relationship. Andso absolutely we have a number of services
that are aimed at that age group. And YSS administers statewide an aftercare program
(40:30):
that creates those supports for youth who'veaged out of foster care and so they
are partnered with a caseworker who helpswith healthy relationships, identifying education goals,
safe housing, employment, all sortsof skills, and that happens THROUGHYS and
affiliates all over the state. Ithink one of the other programs that's been
(40:52):
major is realizing the needs of youngpeople. We have some young ladies out
there who are with child and manyof you who have had that first child
know that is a great learning processand sometimes it's a little more difficult on
your own if that advice isn't outthere, but you provide that too.
(41:15):
Yes, education is a key pieceof what we do, coming alongside people
wherever they are and the challenge thatthey have, making sure they have those
healthy relationships. And in our housingprograms, we do have specific housing programs
that are for pregnant and parenting youngmoms, and we also look for ways
(41:36):
to partner with kids at any stageof life who need that healthy relationship.
So we've hit February, but wejust came off National Mentoring Month and the
YSS Mentoring program across Story and BooneCounties has ninety nine matches right now.
Maybe one of your listeners can bethat one hundredth match. Right we have
(41:57):
kids waiting, especially boys. Wealways need male mentors. Our mentoring program
works in the schools and a numberof different schools that counselors and leaders will
identify youth who would benefit just froma healthy relationship a friend, go have
lunch with them, play some games. I'm keeping up on my UNO skills
mew as I go and need aGilbert with my mentor every week, right
(42:19):
they have a new one. Youflip the cards over halfway through, and
you just can't keep up with thesethings unless you're right there, and then
you can stay with that same matchas they grow. And we have a
community based mentoring for middle schoolers andhigh schoolers who would benefit. So that's
a way people really can get involved. I know the mentoring program has grown
and it's become quite large, butalways a need for mentors. There's usually
(42:43):
more mentees than mentors. And youhate to think of that young person out
there who could just use a littlebit of your time, and I do
mean a little bit compared to yourlife. Is such a small bit of
time. And like Kara said, you can have fun. You can you
could go to a movie, youcan do almost anything you would do with
(43:05):
your own kids. They just needsome companionship and some guidance. In some
ways, it's easy to do.And the thing I would tell you if
you volunteer withys. You guys, just don't throw them out there. Oh
you want to do this? Here, go get out of here. Of
course, for security reasons, agreat background checks obviously we all know why
(43:30):
those are necessary, and that givesa little bit of a peace of mind
out there. And the other greatthing about YSS, and we talked about
the homeless youth etc. Out there, is their whole goal to begin with
is reunification with their family if possible. Yeah, we certainly think about wrap
(43:54):
around supports for the whole family. And one of the big is that YSS
is focused now is in substance abuseprevention and we have here in Aims now
residential level of care basically rehab forteenagers, a house for girls in a
house for boys. We're building aseventy bed facility south of Cambridge, the
(44:15):
Ember Recovery Campus. We got alot going on now. Am I going
to fit it all in here?Right? It's an ambitious organization, but
that's one of the programs where youthare removed. They come from their home,
they're in a home like environment towork on sobriety. And yet through
that there's family counseling. We havestrengthening families weekends where parents come in and
(44:37):
learn some of the same skills thatthose youth are learning. Because we know
that when kids are in our services, they're going to go back to the
environment that they came from. Thatis the goal, and so we want
them to return to the healthiest environmentpossible. So what strengths can we build
around that and what tools can wegive them for that self sufficiency to be
(44:57):
healthy? And so we're excited mentionthat importance of eighteen to twenty four year
olds At the Ember campus. Wewill continue to have addiction treatment for teens,
but we'll also at Iowa's first youngadult program, so eighteen to twenty
four year olds who need those rehabservices. You know, we're a couple
of blocks from a campus that maybehas a few eighteen to twenty four year
(45:19):
olds. What do you think now, do you think there's any of those?
We know one in six people willstruggle with substance abuse disorder in their
lives. It's not blind to raceor means or anything else. We just
know that some people are going toneed those supports and we want to be
here to provide that. I alwayssay I'm amazed at how simple growing up
(45:40):
was for me and probably many ofyou out there was a much simpler life
with a lot less stressors out there. Unfortunately, teen suicides have grown exponentially.
We want to do everything we canto help those young people and families.
At the same time, there's pressure, there's stressors out there, and
(46:06):
as these programs come into being,we know that the drug problem amongst young
people has grown also. Unfortunately, you know, a lot lesson are smoking
thanks to Liasays and their movements tostem smoking in Iowa, not only for
young people, but for as adultstoo. In the thing, I want
(46:30):
you to know when we talk aboutthese young people, these different places that
they'll be going, these residences, etc. It's not a free ride.
They participate in household chores, etcetera. There things to do, aren't
their care. Absolutely, when wesay a household environment, we mean it.
That's part of responsibility and setting themup for self sufficiency in the future.
(46:53):
So the kids attend school, theyparticipate in meals. One of my
favorite traditions we have at the residentialhouses is cultural meals, where the kids
would pick a meal that's important tothem, participate in preparing it, and
introduce that to the rest of theyouth in the house so that they can
share some of what's important to themculturally with others there and then help also
(47:17):
with all the cleanup that comes withmaking a meal part of those great life
skills. So yes, that isa piece of it, for sure,
and we want the community to knowthat there are just so many ways to
get involved. We think about Champion, invite invest right, champion yss,
Tell someone hey, I heard Meltalking to Kiera Warm on the radio.
(47:37):
This mornings has a lot of thingsgoing on. Do you know what it
was originally stood for? Right?Do you know how long it's been here
in names? Let people know thosethings are there. Invite maybe a friend
you know who would be a greatmentor to go to ISS dot org and
sign up. We do provide thetraining and supports. Like you mentioned before,
I worked for ISS. I wasa mentor. That was part of
(47:59):
my initial exposure to the organization. It's very well organized. They provide training,
they have a matching process to identifya mentee that you'll have something in
common with, have an interest toshare, and so that's a great way
to get involved as well. Andof course, you know invest there are
a lot of people around this communitywho partner with us. We were talking
(48:21):
to Kawanas earlier. You know,we've received grants from every service organization in
this community, public funds as well, and we put that to work for
hope and opportunity. You mentioned twoleaders, Georgia Course, who's very close
to my heart and I deeply I'vealways appreciated our friendship, but also a
(48:45):
young man who heads it now,Andrew Allen, who was the perfect choice.
And I say that because we talkedabout being able to relate to.
Andrew Allen was a former client ofY, I says when he was younger
and had a great story to tell. And if you want proof of success
(49:07):
in the programs at YSS, heis the prime example. He's not only
the leader, he's an example ofwhat you can do with your life with
the right type of counseling mandoring. And had aspired to being head of YSS.
And believe me, I tell youthat wasn't great, but we always
(49:29):
say, yeah, he was thenatural. I always felt he was an
that when George mentioned retiring, Ihad mentioned Andrew's name as a possible replacement,
and because I was so impressed withhis story, and Andrew was in
a good position with a good company, I mean a very respectable, high
ranking position with another company. Andyou know, in the back of your
(49:52):
mind you say, oh, Iwonder if he's willing to give that up
to go to work for YSS.And he didn't hesitate and Mel, Yeah,
that is an incredible introduction. Butwe've got to find a quick sponsor
break here coming up before the topof the hour. I hope we're going
to talk to that man when weget back. All right, I'll tell

in shock this morning. I gotout and my good friend Austin was getting
out of his truck at the sametime, and I heard somebody yell at
me and I thought I had spotteda WWE wrestler that might have been in

town there. I did you knowhe had hair last time I saw him,
and he's got that even the terriblelook right now. Although it's a
good look on him. I'll givehim that. It's not terrible. But
yeah, hey, I know thisis we always talk business, but what
was the incentive to shave the headmore? Aerodynamic on the motorcycle. That
(55:28):
was it. Yeah, you werea very large inspiration in it too,
But yeah, I felt it mademe go faster. You know what it
does do It avoids that motorcycle hairand I think I don't now I'm going
to ask you do you ride witha helmet or not? Not all the
time, but yeah, but I'llmake you feel better. I never did.
(55:50):
I just never did. I wantedthe freedom and the feel of being
a motorcyclist and that helmet was inhibitingin some ways to me. And my
wife always said, well, it'sa brain bucket if you have an accident,
you know, And I said,I know that, but you know
what, if it's that bad,I'm not sure I want to be around.
It's mister vegetable. But no,So it's hard, especially for people
(56:15):
that do ride their bikes. Theyknow it's it's hard ride Monday through Friday,
you know, when you have work. So if I didn't have to
worry about windy hair going to ameeting, you know, you know,
it doesn't matter what you put init, it still looks like you've gotten
it blown back. Yeah, exactly. We're standing straight up by the time
you're off that motorcycle. So yeah, nothing worse than a six foot flat
(56:37):
top. No, no, nothing, nothing worse than that. But anyway,
I was surprised you didn't ride yourbike today. It's going to be
so nice, but coming in andben a little chilli. I actually made
sure that I pulled it out andeverything was good to go here the other
day when it started to warm up. So yeah, I'm ready. I
would tell you what I was.Get ready. Here's a sob story.
(56:57):
Forced to sell mine a couple ofyears ago, and I sold it to
a young man in town here, and I swear to God, he rides
by and honks the horn just irritateme. I'll have to make sure I
start on that same journey. WhenI see outside, I'll make sure to
honk when I'm on it. Yeah, well, I hope you do.
I hope you do. And alwaysknow I've got an extra rake. I've
(57:17):
got a you know, an extralawn more that you can stop buying.
I will teach you. That's fantastic. Actually, we would send the fine
people from Bethany at Home over tohelp you, and they can help make
sure that your yard looks great andyour your lawns mode and your hedges are
trimmed. Yeah, yeah, that'sfor sure. And I have to I
(57:37):
have to. That's actually a greatsuggestion. And I often forget how old
I am. I'm reminded frequently, but as as I first visited Bethany Life
years ago, I was a bityounger, and I was always tell the
story that all of a sudden, you know, I'm when I got into
(58:00):
I was in my early forties, and I was doing shows, had a
lot of retirement communities and health organizations, et cetera. And I'm thinking,
gosh, it's great these things arearound. We have such great services in
our area. And one of theorganizations said, well, why don't you
(58:22):
get signed up to live here whenyou retire, etc. And I said
to my and I was not quiteold enough yet to meet their means.
They said, but we've got along list, et cetera. And I
said, well, I'll think i'llpresent it to my wife and see what
she thinks. And my wife says, I don't want to go live with
those old people. And I remindher of that, of that statement,
(58:45):
And most of you know that mywife is twenty two years younger than me,
so yeah, she's not quite atthe same stage I'm at. And
I remind her every once in whenI said, you know, you said
I don't want to go live withthose old people, and I said,
and you do every day. Andof course, Mel, I have to
(59:06):
live with you going long in thebreaks, which is admirable because you have
such good content. I'm not goingto argue with that, but we do
need to pay our sponsors. Andit's coming around the top of the hour.
Well, you've just saved your joband yours and yours in mind.

that unless they get a chance totalk with you. And this is a
terrific program that takes a little bitof exchange. Now that it's complicated.
I think what it is is amazing, is what it is. And I
want you to remember, as wetalked with Austin earlier, that Bethany Life.
(01:03:37):
This is a concept that Bethany Lifecame up with and maybe, as
far as I know, the onlyone in the state of Iowa. Austin
so yes, So backtracking a littlebit, it's not something that actually Bethany
came up with. We were ata conference about twelve years ago and this
(01:03:57):
concept of continuing care at home upin one of the sessions. Bethany,
being progressive and innovative, realized, you know, we need to make sure
that we're taking care of people thatway they want to and a lot of
people want to stay in their ownhomes. Well, this concept allowed people
to do that. We were ninthin the nation when we started. Stopped
(01:04:17):
keeping track because it is just exploding. But to my knowledge, we're the
only one in the state that stilldoes and encompasses everything that we do.
There's a lot of other ones thatwill pop up, but you need to
live on their campus. Ours isall about keeping you in your home wherever
you call home. It can bea farm home, it can be an
apartment, it can be a condo, live in town, doesn't matter.
(01:04:39):
We'll keep you in your home aslong as we can, as safely as
we can. Paige, we keepsaying Bethany Life. I have no idea
why, but we keep saying BethanyLife. I think there are some folks
out there saying, who is BethanyLife? What do they represent? Well,
(01:05:02):
beth Any Life has a full continuumof care, and really our focus
at Life Choices is to keep ourmembers happy, healthy, independent, and
well. So we really try tobe proactive with our members' health and be
looking forward to the future and findout how we can join them in the
journey to keep them healthy and welland doing all those things they love to
(01:05:25):
do. I know one of theonuses of a long time ago. I
experienced it with my own mother. She had some surgery at an older age,
and they said she needs rehabilitative care. She needs to go into a
home that will take care of her. She can't go back to her apartment
(01:05:46):
right now. She needs to bein there for about ninety days or so.
And my mother was dead set againstleaving her home. She flat out
said, I'll manage, just getme back there. I'll manage because she
believed. And in the time thatI was growing up, there was a
thing called the Old People's Home orthe County Home, and this was a
(01:06:13):
place where you went to go todie. Basically, the old attitude was
I'm going to die pretty soon,so I have to go to this facility,
and everybody's going to forget me.I'm going to be out there.
I'm just going to be like apiece of the furniture. The staff there
is just going to come out anddo their job and not give a hoot
on how I'm doing. And itwas all I could do to finally get
(01:06:39):
her there. But the experience Ihad up in Story City is the fact
that, yes, and we've talkedabout that, that if you do have
to go, there are services therethat aren't lifetime. It's not where you're
(01:06:59):
going to die. It's going towhere you're going to learn to live better
and rehabilitate and eventually, as fastas they can get you there, go
back to your home. But whenyou get to your home, My Choices
is a great program to have toease your pain there. Yeah, if
you're returning home from skilled care transitionalcare, we have both Bethany at Home
(01:07:21):
or Life Choices that Bethany that cantake care of people in their homes.
So if somebody is going back homeafter a surgery or illness and just needs
help with cleaning, cooking, showers, medication management, Bethany at Home can
do all of those and it's justfee for service, so you just pay
for what you need as you needit. I think a lot of people
(01:07:44):
often and I mentioned I hate Isold life insurance at one time. I
know that going into a person's housethe rolling eyes. Sometimes it comes a
life insurance salesman. You know,no, no, that's not the experience
you're going to have when you givethe folks from Benthley Life an opportunity to
come visit you and tell you whatthey offer. Yeah, that's correct.
(01:08:08):
We run into that a lot.I like, think of us instead of
insurance, we are assurance helping assurethat we're watching and maintaining your assets so
that you know we're You've got thatextra hand and people that can come over
and help with your personal cares allthe way through. You've got an advocate
available to you twenty four to seven. In the event of an emergency,
(01:08:30):
there's an insurance program that has thatyou know, with with long term care
insurance, you have exclusionary periods, multiple activities of daily living that have to
be affected. With our program,if you were out in the yard and
rul Jarinko, you call your advocateand you're going to get help right away
in the moment, not calling acall center and waiting for help and having
to wait thirty sixty or ninety daysfor help. So or a translator.
(01:08:54):
Yeah, exactly, yes, exactly. So I was going to say,
it is much more personal. Youwill know the folks that you talk to.
You will know your advocate very well. They will not just be an
advocate, you will be calling themfriend. It's that kind of personal touch
(01:09:15):
that they have and it's not fake. They truly care about you and your
welfare. And that's the thing thatBethley Life demonstrates so well is you are
not a number. You're not justa patient. You are a people.
You're a person, and we careabout you. We sincerely care about you,
(01:09:38):
not a paycheck. You're that personthat they truly want to make your
life better and not only better, but the best that it can be.
Exactly. We are person center focusedcare. So and with all of our
members, we've had over one hundredand seventy sign up for our program.
That means we have one hundred andseventy individualized care plans. No two people
(01:10:00):
in the way that they need careas they age are the same. So
what makes you tick, Mel maybedifferent than your wife, and we want
to make sure that we're honoring andkeeping both of those is equally important,
which is vital in health and happiness. And I will tell you it is
a given giving organization. I wantto talking about Bethany Life itself. We
(01:10:25):
talk about their location up in StoryCity. I don't think you'll find a
person up in Story City it doesn'tknow what and who Bethany Life is because
they don't just conduct business. It'shard for me to call it a business
because there's so much caring goes on. But it's it's their friend, it's
their neighbor that give back to thecommunity that they do business. And not
(01:10:50):
just that community, this community thatwe're in right now, Ames Iowa.
They're participating in so many different programshere and I'm talking about you know,
it might be charitable events. Theygive back to the community and in that
way and supporting and sponsoring a lotof charitable things that happen throughout Story County.
(01:11:15):
So I want you to know howbig their heart is. And people
with big hearts have lots of loveand they're waiting to give a little bit
of that love to you, butthey can't do it. Dog on it
if you don't get hold of them. Page. How long have you been
with Bethany. I've been with Bethanyabout six years now, and you hate
it. It's a great job. We're going to have a lot of fun
(01:11:39):
and keep people happy and healthy, and every day is different. It's a
rewarding job. Austin, how manyyears for you? Seven and a half?
So yeah, and I mean, just mirroring what Page said, It's
amazing. Not once in the lastseven and a half years if I woke
up and go, man, Ihave to go to work today. It's
more like, Okay, what doI get to do today? Yeah?
(01:12:00):
And I wouldn't imagine how many friendsyou could that you've made over the years.
And and knowing I think it's somethingyou say proudly, where do you
work Bethany life? You know whenyou say that with great pride and a
great accomplishment, and I would imagineit's a hard place to leave if if
(01:12:20):
you had to. Yeah there,I don't think any of us here looking
towards that. Bethany, as youmentioned, gives back were faith based nonprofit.
This year marks one hundred and tenyears that we've not only been helping
our resident but the community that incommunities that we serve in. One of
the great people of med in thelife I love talking to is Chaplain Dave.
(01:12:44):
He is just a light. Heis an actual light that you just
enjoy talking to and and does suchsharing with the folks up there and Will
I don't Alwa's to make the sickheel almost kind of a guy. So
(01:13:04):
we're looking forward to meeting up withhim in the next few weeks too.
Beth me life a long time sponsorof the morning show, whether it's called
Breakfast Club or Coffee with Mel,and we always look forward to spending time
with him. And it used tobe just I think was it August that
we got together because I know itwas getting close to harvest time because I
(01:13:25):
always enjoyed the short ride and Iemphasize that up to Story City a beautiful
community which is growing in every way. We'll talk more about that next week,
as we will be at Timberland Villageout on Timberland Drive. You can't
imagine the beautiful setting, serene settingthat that's in. And if you are
(01:13:49):
a person looking for a residence, assisted living or a regular apartment or a
town home, I don't know ifthey have any town homes available. We'll
talk about that next week, buta great place if you're looking to settle
down in your older years and leadthe life that you want to live.
(01:14:09):
There's no dictates, you come andgo as you want. They've got availability
out there for you to have familycome in and visit, maybe stay overnight.
We'll talk more about that next week. This week we're with Bethny Life

of fact, just a few blocksdown the road, and we're going to

we talked about that. Yeah,I said, I just put Scott into
(01:19:11):
shock. Yes, I thought thatapart. I recovered though, but yeah,
you did break by the end ofthe break. So what do you
have going on right now? Well, we're going to talk with Sarah,
who's also with Bethany Life. Thatsounds like a good idea, she thinks.
So it's a good idea. Yeah, and Sarah's got some things to
(01:19:33):
share with us too. Sarah, good morning, Good morning. She's from
the metropolitan area Raleigh, Iowa.Well, we discover two hundred people,
about two hundred hundred as of thismorning. We haven't we haven't done a
bed check. But anyway, BethleyLife, you went to Iowa State,
(01:19:54):
you told me and lo and behold, is this your first job out of
university? It is my first job? Yep, Yeah, what do you
think of it? I love it. I've been there about a year and
a month now, and it's thebest place I've ever worked. She didn't
think i'd catch that first place.Best place, Yeah, one of those
(01:20:14):
things. And I will say, without question, would be the best place
you'll ever work. And may younever leave because I would find it hard
to work with these people I meethere to leave them, they become friends.
They actually care about each other.Yes, they certainly do. And
(01:20:36):
that's a little bit about what I'mtalking about today. We have a committee
called Bethany Life Wellness and it's reallyjust about Bethany Life caring for their employees
and their mental health, their overallphysical health and all that goes into your
well being. Yeah, so Ilove it. Did you notice she got
me back on track. I mean, I'm going along here, straying a
(01:20:58):
little bit, and Sarah said, well, I do have something I really
want to talk about here, solet's talk some more about it. What's
going on? Yeah, So we'redoing a blood drive February twenty second,
from twelve thirty to four thirty, and it's at the households of Bethany and
Story City. And this is partof our Bethany Life Wellness because giving back
to the community and the people aroundus really helps bring your mental well being.
(01:21:25):
Now, this is whether it's ablood drive for just the employees or
can other people participate? Yeah,it's for employees and the community. So
we want everyone to know they're invitedto come out and donate and give back
to our community. Yeah, andI want to mention I was joking a
little bit before we got on airthere. Well, the one thing I
remember about blood drives us O types, as zeros are less likely to get
(01:21:55):
blood because we're under the misnomer.Well, there's so many O types out
there that there's no reason to Onthe converse side of that, there's so
many people out there that need Otype blood because we are a big part
of the population, and you needto give you need to help support,
and this is an easy way todo it. Yeah, it certainly is.
(01:22:15):
And the need for blood these daysis overwhelming. After COVID happened,
everyone in the hospitals needs blood andanyone around you could go into the hospital
and need it tomorrow. So it'svery important that we donate. Ah,
that's when I'm in the hospital andbring me a glass of blood. I
want to glass of blood here thismorning. Oh yeah, I'm making a
double right now. Yeah. Now, the day of that again, it's
(01:22:40):
February twenty second, it's a Thursday, and it's twelve thirty to four thirty
pm. Yeah. Now, isthere anything else special about the twenty second?
I don't know. Is there ourbeloved father of the country, George
Washington's birthday. Oh there you go. Yeah, see, that's why you
need me. I think that. Also, my beloved late brother's birthday was
(01:23:02):
on the twenty second, and mygrandma's birthday was on the twenty second,
and they were giving people. Soit's time you become giving people on the
twenty second. Roll up those sleevesand let's drain. You have some blood,
Yeah, that's for sure. Dothey still get a cookie or something
after they do? Oh? Yeah, you'll get lots of snacks. Well,
(01:23:24):
there you go. You just soldthem. You mentioned food to anybody
in this community, they're there,it doesn't matter. Hey, we'd like
you to give a legger an arm, okay, solid off. Will you
get some food? Yep? Andyou can sign up to donate at the
Red crossblood dot org or you canjust walk in and donate. Have you
ever donated blood? I have?Yep? And plasma? How'd you people?
(01:23:46):
Afterwards? I feel fine? Yeah, And that's what I want people
to know. Snack. Just needto take your snack and your juice and
you'll feel ready to go better thanever. And understand when she said blood
and place, there is a bigdifference in the two. Plasma has a
longer shelf life than blood, sothe need for blood is constant more well
(01:24:10):
for both, but blood more sobecause number one, it's utilized much more
than plasma, but the shelf lifeis far less than plasma. Did you
know that? No? I didn't. You're educating me a lot today.
Wow, no charge either, alot less than I will stay to charge
you. That's for sure. Wewant to have to pay off my loan.
(01:24:35):
But anyway, Yeah, is anythingelse you'd like to add? I
don't think so. That's all Igot. That's a lot. That's a
lot. The blood Drive February twentysecond. Should they pre sign up or
can they just show up? Theycan sign up at Red crossblood dot org,
slash give or they can just showup. All right, sounds good.
(01:24:57):
It's nice to meet you. Yeah, it's nice to meet you too.

this to you over a month ago. SEEI your daughter, and that she
that acorn didn't fall far from thetree. She like her mama in many
ways and mannerisms, and is alreadygiving back to the community. She is.
(01:33:13):
She is certainly a girl with serviceon her heart. And so she
did a collection last spring of blanketsand water and donated to the Bridge Home.
Yeah, it was knee out there, and it was fun to talk
to her too, although she's alittle ledgy. She's not a morning person.
Yeah, and I thought I wasgoing to have to do her voice
(01:33:34):
right. She was pretty quiet atthat point, I know. Anyway,
it was just fun and like Isay, her mom's the same kind of
giving person and she does a lotof that through extension, absolutely, and
talking about life. Extension certainly hasprograms for the whole lifespan as well,
(01:33:57):
just in a different format of resourcesand programs that help provide information for people
to then make their own best choices. Yeah, and provide you, Yeah,
provide you with what you need toknow to make your life better.
And what now, Okay, nowyou've you've enticed me. She's pointing at
(01:34:18):
a headline here it says our extremesthe new normal? What's that mean?
So I'm going to touch base onyouth programming and egg and Natural Resource programming
today and this first one, theextremes are they the new norm? This
is actually going to be weather related. So you know in January we had
(01:34:41):
blizzard weather and now it's fifty degreesand half the snow has melted. So
what does that mean? I don'thave the answer. However, our Egg
and Natural Resource coordinator, Bethwogi,is going to host a live webinar February
thirteenth from six to seven thirty andthe present is going to be Justin Glisten
(01:35:02):
from the Iowa Department of Agriculture andLand Stewardship, and so he's going to
be the one to help share informationthe impacts that the climate is having and
what those extremes might mean for Iowa. And then at the end of that
seed Beth is very much a perconnected to land and growing produce, so
(01:35:27):
she will have seeds available that peoplecan start there and then take them home
with them as well. Wow,so you get your spring garden right,
It's a good way to get started. I hear it's important to start seeds
in the winter. Start them nowso they're ready to go out when the
weather is right. Maybe not inFebruary, though, I learned that from
(01:35:48):
my late ex father in law,who you would go down in his basement
and he'd have tomato plants and pepperplants and everything growing down out there that
he would transplant once the weather permitted. Absolutely, my husband's uncle has his
house is filled with plants come Marchand gets ready to take them outside as
(01:36:08):
well. You garden. I try. My kids will share that that is
not my best quality, but Ido try. And I would tell you
my wife is big on the houseplants, and you need a machete to
get from my bedroom to the livingroom. She's got so many of them.
(01:36:31):
And years ago, I will tellyou anything that she touched turned brown
or didn't live very long. Iwouldn't let her touch me. But the
whole thing is now, through someeducation, etc. Those plants in our
house are prolific, are healthy andgood. And I started so you don't
(01:36:55):
feel bad married. I started gardeningwhen I retired, and I got some
of those boxes that are up soI don't have to bend over or I
was had. My first year waspretty successful. In fact, I have
talked my wife into letting me expandmy garden this year. That is wonderful.
(01:37:17):
You know. Sometimes I think that'sprobably when my plant development skills are
really going to come to fruition forme, and I might need to take
some of those classes for myself aswell. I'm just going to say,
I just learned about a class youcould take, and not only that,
but get some seeds too. Absolutely. Yeah, So we are certainly welcome
(01:37:41):
people out on February thirteenth from sixto seven thirty and Beth will be hosting
that for us. And that's wherethat will be at the Story County Extension
Office. And we are located atfourteen twenty one South Bell Avenue. We
are sweet one oh seven. Whenwe look out our window, we can
see the dmac huns like Center. If that helps provide a sense of where
we're located. I'm ashamed I haven'tvisited yet, but I'm going to.
(01:38:05):
I want to stop by and seewhat haven't you been there? It's been
about a year now, maybe alittle more. I think this is our
third year now. Oh well, time passes. I will tell you,
but I'm going to stop by there. You're going to talk right now about
what I think is one of thebest programs in story counting. Listen up,
(01:38:29):
you folks with Chilling's, because thisis a way to get them taken
care of when you decide I wanttonight out. Absolutely So this particular program
is our Babysitting Basics program. Weare working on our plans for spring breaks,
so our marketing will be coming outfor these shortly. Monday, March
eleventh is going to be our BabysittingBasics program from eight thirty to three thirty.
(01:38:54):
It is for youth in grades fifthgrade and up, and we really
want those parts sipense to feel educatedand prepared for whatever their babysitting experience might
be, whether it's for a sibling, a neighbor, or if they're doing
that as a business for other families. We really want them to be confident
(01:39:14):
in their babysitting abilities. So wewill talk about the ages and stages of
youth, what are some appropriate activitiesfor those, certainly health and nutrition,
And we also partner with Mary Gileyand so they come in and teach for
st AID and CPR and all ofthose kinds of things for us so as
well, because we really often findthat that is kind of their first introduction
(01:39:39):
to that, and we want themto know that they can have those skills
available to them whether they are babysittingor not. I think what I'm impressed
with, I mean, all ofthem are impressed, But the CPR and
first aid skills I think are pricelessfor a babysitter. That you know that
(01:40:01):
if something should go wrong, they'regoing to know what to do to perhaps
alleviate the seriousness of the situation rightaway, and that can go from there
also that they're in good hands. My question is for those who go through
this course, is there a certificationthat they get? And more importantly,
(01:40:24):
sometimes you're hunting to get a babysitter. Do you have a site they can
go to to find out who someof these young people are? Gotcha?
Those are great questions. So wedon't have a site listing of babysitters.
However, one participant completes the program, we do provide them a certificate so
(01:40:44):
they can share that with families thatthey are talking with that that they have
participated in this program, and thenthey're able to share about the things that
they have learned. The other thingthat I really love about this program is
by the end of the day,I want them to know that even though
they may feel like the individual orsole babysitter, that they have a whole
(01:41:05):
team of people behind them. Itis their own family, because they should
have those conversations about where they're babysittingand all of those topics they have,
so they have their own family, the family that they're babysitting for. If
I had a babysitter, I wouldwant them to know that they can call
(01:41:25):
me if they have a concern whilethey're at my house watching my children.
And then certainly another reason I lovehaving Mary Greeley come and partner with us
is if they do not that weever want them to find themselves in an
emergency situation, but for them toknow that that group of people are there
to help them as well. Now, did you babysit when you were younger?
(01:41:49):
I did. I did babysit whenI was in high school, and
I just loved the experiences. Theywere neighbors. I also babysit for a
teacher who's daughter had a varied ability, and so I got to learn about
her and their family welcomed me inand I would help them at family events
(01:42:10):
and it was such a great experience. Was a fly by the city of
your pants then, though there wasn'ta certification available. You know, I
did not participate in a babysitting programthat I can remember some of my experiences.
My sisters are a lot younger thanme, so my experience started at
home first and then expanded to familiesin our community. Were you more likely
(01:42:35):
to slap your sisters around a littlebit? No? No. We would
try to figure out the best wayto navigate our time together and sometimes that
was playing games, or if theweather was nice, we would be outside
as well. You know who doesget slapped around? Me? Why?
(01:42:55):
Because if we don't get our sponsorsin, you know, you regret it
and I the front. No,I'll come back and slap you around a
little bit. But I'll tell youwhat. We'll go ahead and honor your
request and we'll be back. WithMary Wilkins from Extension Service on coffee with
me on fourteen thirty, kas IScott answered this for me. Yeah,
(01:43:20):

break after this. We have tofit in before the top of the hour.
This coming break give you a previewof the break we're about to go
to. Little bit of thanks,a little bit of weather, and then
we go all right, right, thanks, It's time for the latest news

Timberland Village for Bethany Life. InStorage City, I will still be with
Bethany Life, but will be atHouseholds of Bethany In the address to twelve

about the Christmas tree in the middleof the road up there. But anyway,
Households at Bethany next week, notTimberland Village. That will be the
week after. So no, it'stoo well. Whatever we oh in March,
(01:48:56):
I think March one, I'll beat Timberland Village. But Households at
Bethany next to Chuck Reid is keepme honest here, which is difficult for
him, but ever since he's beenput on probation, he's been better at
it. But all right, yougot it. Households of Bethany next week,
(01:49:18):
Friday morning, seven to nine, coffee with Mel all right. So
either way, I get to bewith the good folks at Bethany, and
I'm happy for that, all right. I get to be with the good
folk from Extension right now, andthat folk be Mary Wilkins. And Mary.
We got through a couple of theprograms there, but we're not done.
(01:49:41):
We always have programs. Another springbreak program is going to be for
our kindergarten through third grade youth. This is going to be Safety and Wellness
Explorers. It will also be eightthirty am to three pm. And we
are partnering with Story County Public Healthon this one. Actually, we are
(01:50:01):
going to focus on everything safety andwellness related to water safety, being safe
in the sun, are nutrition,so we're going to make a healthy snack
together, and also why movement isgood for our bodies and how that keeps
us healthy as well. So thatwill be a full day as well.
All of our information is available atour website. There are some program fees
(01:50:27):
for these. Our website is wwwdot extension dot i State dot edu slash

(01:50:49):
makes me think, of course witha Story County Fair. When is that
coming up? Mary? Yeah,so the Story County Fair is going to
be seventeen through the twenty. FirstI had to think about it. I
don't have that in front of me, but yeah, so the Story County
Fair always happens in July. Socertainly our four each members are planning what
(01:51:13):
their four each year looks like. We're halfway through that year as they navigate
project areas, and then we'll beable to showcase what they have learned through
exhibits at the fair. As well, four each. And I'm going to
say it again, you can stilljoin. You join now if you wanted
to, couldn't you. They canjoin now, but they won't be able
(01:51:34):
to exhibit at the County Fair becausewe are past that particular deadline. But
they certainly can have a club experience, explore projects together, be a part
of their community. We would loveto have them join us. We get
ready for next year at the StoryCounty Fair, and along those lines there
(01:51:55):
make plans. I'm going to StoryCounty Fairs, the purest of county fairs.
The focuses on the youth and theirprograms out there. Speaking of that,
I know sometimes and you'll come backand talk to me. I know,
well I will unless I asault hertoday. But the photography and some
of that is prejudged. So theone event that happens ahead of time is
(01:52:19):
actually next month in March. Thatis going to be the communication and clothing
event. So they students make purchasesor make their own clothing garments and they
will meet with the judge and havethat experience together. Their exhibit will be
evaluated, same with posters and presentations. They get to practice their communication skills,
(01:52:45):
meet with a judge as well, and then there's an opportunity for exhibits
to be selected that will advance tothe Iowa State Fair. Yeah. And
the other thing I like about thefair is the ribbon auction. Yes,
been auction is a great way tosupport specifically those with livestock projects. They
(01:53:06):
have a great opportunity rather than buyingthe animal companies and organizations will support those
youth by buying the ribbon and supporttheir future program experiences as well. Yeah,
and they won't have to kill themright in front of the kids.
So it's a nice thing that's downthe road somewhere. But anyway down the
(01:53:27):
road, Mel, speaking of what'sdown the road here, I think we
better take a quick break, allright, get it back to you so
you can wrap things up. Soundsgood, all right? Thanks to Mary

That's one of the things. AndPage, you're a heck of a nice

guy. You're a heck of anice gal and doing a job you enjoy
doing. I do. We getto keep people in their homes and keep
them independent and safe there. Sothrough Bethany at Home we have a lot
of services that we can help peoplestay where they want to be. And
will you I mean, I knowyou have these luncheons, et cetera,
(01:58:06):
but do you actually make house calls? We do, yeah, so if
people call the Bethany at Home number, we can actually come out and talk
to you more about our services andhow scheduling works and talk one on one
too. That works great. Andthe one thing we have to mentioned is
they are surprisingly affordable. And that'swhy if you're sitting there saying I can't
(01:58:28):
afford to do that or not,yo it to yourself, yo it to
your family. To find out moreabout the program, now, we've touched
on a lot of it here today, but to get the real facts,
the real feel you need to talkto a representative like Page or Austin or
one of the fine people here atBethany Life. So again, you mentioned
(01:58:48):
a phone number, shall we giveit to them? Sure? The phone
number for Bethany at Home is fiveto one five five zero nine five four

Bethany at Home is just over fifteenyears. So we've learned a lot along
the way, and we have twodifferent programs that are both focused on keeping
people in their own homes. Allright, well, thank you page for
