(00:00):
Another one of those one person acappella groups that every voice in that song
was done by one person. Wow, So he dubbed that back folded over,
Oh wow, folded over. Thosealways impressed me that somebody that has
that kind of range. And thenthe technique of dubbing it over again where
he is listening to himself and singingalong with himself, and it just so
(00:28):
well done. I had to putit on this morning. I'm not a
bit take on me. It's anokay song, but but yeah, I
not when I would normally pick.I don't know, but it works.
You're going on a Monday morning anda chilly Monday morning, my friend,
it is it is. I wasabout to head out of the house and
(00:48):
I, you know, turned overto Siri and said, hey, yeah,
what's what's the weather out there? And I heard forty five degrees and
I thought, wow, I'd thrownmy windbreaker and it's June, but I
wore a sweatshirt in Yeah. Mymy wife got back from Coralville, their
bus rodeo and meetings out there andhad a tremendous time. I guess,
(01:12):
I at least what she told me. It was one of those things so
there's something about hearing about a greattime doesn't do it for you, actually
bores you. And she's going throughit and she's explaining every little every little
thing, and it reminded me ofyears ago my late in laws, late
(01:37):
x in laws rest their souls, very simple people, enjoyed the simple things
in life. And when they'd goon vacations, they would camp. They
had a little fold out camper thatthey would take and visit various parks throughout
the country. And uh, butmy father in law decided one time he
(01:59):
was going to take a pictures ofall the restroom facilities at the various places
restrooms, the restroom facilities at thevarious parks that they were at, and
at the edge of your seat, how did you continue asleep during it?
And they weren't just photos, theywere slides. They were slide show.
(02:23):
Yeah, slide projector came out andmy ex, I don't know why,
she got a little upset with mebecause we were constantly subjected to slide shows,
various things. And we were sittingthere one day after dinner that we
had had on a Sunday afternoon, and all of a sudden, I see
(02:49):
him go to that closet, graba box of slides, and then brought
his little slide projector out set upa TV trade to put it on a
big living room anyway. But um, for some reason, I blurted out,
oh no, not the sleep ray. And I truly fell asleep during
(03:16):
the show. But yeah, ohno, not the sleep ray. Response
to that, Oh, my fatherin law was just an easy going guy,
just laughed a little bit. Andbut my ex wife did not think
it was funny. Well, dadlikes to show those lights and stuff.
No, I just I don't knowwhat happened. Just off the top of
(03:38):
my head, it came out,oh no, not the sleep ray.
I did that one other time.A friend of mine, well, I
used to do a show produced ashow that I directed at Channel five which
was called Young People Speak Out,which show was a It was a great
show, it really was. Theybrought in different high school classes or school
(04:00):
and then they would bring in aguest to talk about a certain subject and
then the students could ask questions afterwardsto elaborate on what the guests talked about.
So it was interesting. And hebrought in a guest one time.
I just didn't know how that showwas going to go, and it really
should have been none of my concern. All I had to do was put
the pictures up, make sure thesound was there. He put the subject
(04:24):
matter together and he said, well, today should be a good show.
We're talking about whatever it was.And I said, oh no, not
the sleep ray. I have tosteal awake during this thing. And oh
man, he was insulted. Ohmy god, I thought he never talked
again. And he's one of mybest friends. He really is. Tim
(04:45):
Barry was his name, and heand I were a little cantankerous and dangerous
when we got together. But thattime, yeah, that time he didn't
appreciate my sense of humor. Thecrew did. The crew was laughing.
But you know, so the showwent on, got the subject matter down,
and I say that was an interestingshow because that is the first opportunity
(05:09):
I had to meet a guy bythe name of George Belitsos, doctor Belitsos
now as an honorary doctorate from IowaState, who conceived with the help of
friends. Yss you can show theservices, Yeah it was. It didn't
exist before he he started working onit, and he came as a graduate
(05:31):
student Iowa State and when he talkedabout it on that show. I thought,
Man, this guy's got some pipedreams. This guy's really looking at
it monumental task. And I shouldhave known better because he obviously impressed me
with this presentation, because afterwards Iexcused myself out of the studio before we
(05:54):
did our post editing, and Isaid, I gotta go meet this guy.
I gotta go meet this guy. He's he's got great ideas, and
I just won't show him how muchI enjoyed. Buddy talked about etc.
And then George and I became fastfriends ever since, and they honored me
with a brick over at Youth andShelter Services in the walk with my name
(06:16):
on it. So yeah, thatis uh, that accomplishment both on your
behalf of of dedicated the time andeffort you've dedicated to YSS to get that
brick as it were, um,but obviously far above and beyond that his
(06:38):
dedication. I'm surprised I didn't realize, for whatever reason, I didn't realize
that Youth and Shelter Services was somethinglocals very much. For whatever reason,
I thought it was more on thelevel of a national It is in many
ways. Now, Okay, itis in many ways. It was a
very very humble beginning and not onlyGeorge but other folks that he worked with
(07:02):
that started from the ground up tofind a better solution to the problems that
youth and are and their parents werehaving in this area and has expanded so
much. And it is and you'recorrect in thinking that way in the respect
that it has been called upon orobserved by other youth groups out there to
(07:29):
use as an example for their programs. So from his humble beginnings to where
it is now and and with Alanin charge over there, it has grown
even more. George never loses touch. I can tell you that for sure,
and I just absolutely I have alwaysadmired the work that he's done over
the years and proud to call himmy friend. Yeah, I haven't seen
(07:53):
him lately, but I know he'sthere and I hear about him, so
I know that, you know,he's still it's uh. I like to
say, it's his baby, Andeven though he had turned it over two
very capable hands, you still kindoft watch your baby grow up a little
bit, and he does that. He's got a he lives on a like
(08:16):
an acreage or something, and heraises Llamas now here, he asked,
Lamas, Yeah, and I've beengoing to go out and see it.
And I'm a little shamed, sayI haven't made it yet, but yeah,
he invited me out to see theLlamas, which I think would be
unique. But anyway, Uh,that being said, there we go accomplishments.
(08:37):
Accomplishments I've I've borne witness to manyof them here in this city over
the many years that I've been here, over fifty years of residency here,
and I feel like I've lived hereall my life in a lot of different
ways. To two places make mefeel that. It's South side of Des
Moines, where I grew up inmy adolescence, et cetera. And uh,
(09:01):
and then here where I really matured. I don't know if I've matured
or not, but at least Ifeel like I've matured from where I was
and and uh, yeah it justto see. We were driving over to
have lunch yesterday. Chris had decidedshe didn't want to make lunch. She
said, let's just go out andwe went to Tie Kitchen up in Campus
(09:22):
Town. We love that place ofvery good, locally owned Yeah like it
too. A little while since i'vebeen there, But it's kind of tucked
away, isn't it. It's it'snot it doesn't stand out if you didn't
know it was there. It's oneof those things. But it's one of
those things you walked by. Imean you will miss it once you find
it. Yeah, yeah, onceyou find it, you'll remember. It's
(09:46):
that good and the people there sonice. Um And we saw it changed
hands. I think it stayed withinthe family or something, but changed hands
from the original owners m and wethought, oh god, we're gonna lose
something here because Chinese home style cookingwas another one of our favorite places to
(10:07):
go, and when it left,we lost it. I mean, it
just it didn't re establish. WhereasTi Kitchen Want changed ownership, we thought,
oh, mine is the quality goingto go away? Is what it
didn't. It didn't, as amatter of fact, I want to say
it proved, but it increased inthe in the amount of things offered there.
(10:28):
And we I'll be honest with you, I think we're over there about
every Saturday for lunch. Is wherewe go for lunch. Although your recommendation
after we got done with lunch andwe're driving back home and I am espousing
how much the Campus Town area haschanged, and how I think it's for
(10:52):
the better. I wasn't sure itwas going to be, but I am
so impressed on how it's developed, etc. And And I just looked over
at Christ and I said, youknow what, we could have went to
Cafe Botelaire. And she said, what, I didn't know that you knew
that existed. I said, Iknow it exists, and I know I
should go there, and we probablyshould have done that today, just for
(11:15):
something different. So I think that'son our agenda next. Yeah, well
I think that's great. Yeah,and I would. I mean, like
you're talking about Saturday or Sunday,Um, they have really great brunch.
I would I would recommend it forthat. Yeah. Yeah, and uh,
I like I like going to thesmaller clubs or eating establishments, et
cetera, particularly the local ones.Yeah, they're unique. They really are
(11:39):
unique and they have a lot tooffer. And I hope most of the
folks out there feel the same way. I mean along in Campus Town there
there are many many would I wouldyou would consider franchise businesses are all over
the the estate, et cetera. You can go and find this here that
there, but there are are younique ones that that I like to frequent
(12:05):
and uh kafe. I'm ashamed Ihave not been there in all these years.
So I think next time that's onmy agenda. We support local business.
It's just the way to be anyway. Oh my gosh, look at
that. This morning is running awayfrom me. Um, tell you what,
Let's take a break and then dothe birthday club. We'll stay in
(12:26):
in timely fashion. It's a throwbackMonday for me this morning. Yeah,
how's holl um? You see,I'm having breakfast here this morning, and
I for some reason last night Iwoke up in the middle of the night
and had a craving for something Ihaven't had since I was a kid.
What's up? Bacon and jelly sandwich. Yeah, and Mom used to make
(12:54):
it every once a while when we'rehaving the rush breakfast before school. I
mean tosa some bacon, put somejelly on it and give us those some
toast and made a sandwich. Nowyou need again, it's a bit dry
this morning. Number One, Ididn't have the right kind of toast.
I had Texas toast, too muchbread to enjoy the jelly and the bacon.
(13:18):
But then I remember another thing thatwe put onto was peanut butter.
So it's peanut butter, jelly andbacon. So peanut butter and jelly sandwich
with bacon. Yeah, huh, everything's good with bacon. Isn't that what
they say nowadays? Yeah, Iguess I would have to. I like
bacon. Yeah, I'm no doubtabout that. Yeah. I My wife
just stares at me sometimes at theconcoctions. I come up with what she
(13:43):
never understood. A sandwich I like, which is peanut butter, mayonnaise and
lettuce. Yeah, it doesn't soundgood at all. Now it's delicious,
really, it really is delicious.I just yeah, I ate that a
lot when I was a kid,and it's good and sometimes I'll put some
deal pickle spears on it. Andmy wife suspected for a while that I
(14:09):
was pregnant, h but I wasn't. I would look like I was,
but I wasn't. Um. Butyeah, um, she says, you
never cease to amaze me and youryour taste, what you think is enjoyable
and what kind of makes me goyuck. But uh, yeah, I
occasionally still have a peanut butter mayonnaisesandwich. I just I can't see it
(14:33):
now. It's just in my mind. The taste, it just sounds it
just seems disgusting to me. Ohwell, see now it sounds sounds true.
Yeah, And you know, makeyourself a sample sometimes maybe you'll like
it. Yeah, I don't knowif I could bring myself to do it.
You do you like peanut butter?Of course? You like mayonnaise,
(14:54):
well yeah, but not on noton peanut butter combo. No. And
a nice piece of lettuce. Freshlettuce is good. It's good. What
I'm craving now, and it's comingup into that season and I'll take care
of it is the lovely BLTs andbacon. Let us a tomato. I
could live off those. I loveBLTs, especially during the summer. Yeah,
(15:16):
when you get the fresh tomatoes outand yeah, and they're a little
juicy. And we had breakfast onthe patio yesterday morning, a little chili
out there. But Chris fired upthe griddle. And that's why I have
bacon this morning. She cooks somuch if she overcooks when she works on
that griddle. We had the kidsover, my daughter and her husband and
(15:39):
Ellis and and she just fired upthe griddle. And I asked her when
she got home on Saturday, Saturdaygoing out for breakfast tomorrow morning, which
is our tradition, the family getstogether for breakfast on Sunday morning. And
said, nope, I'm cooking,And I thought, oh boy, she
can overcook again. She did.But what you find out by heading out
(16:03):
to a commercial establishment, it's easierto control our grandson eating outside. He
wants to go, he wants towander. He's not gonna focus on eating.
He can't put him in a highchair and shove the food down his
face. He wants down, andhe wants to run around. He does,
(16:25):
Yeah, he does. Plus hebrought his tractor over, his little
push tractor, and he's got alittle trailer hooks up to it and it
comes undone. You know, youhave to literally hook it to it,
and then he pushes it around andthings like that. But it comes undone
easily. And we find out hehas a temper when it comes undone.
(16:45):
Man, he hits the heiling.Fix this, fix this. I mean
he doesn't talk yet, but hegives you that look. And I must
have put that thing together. Isaid, find me some super glue,
for God's sakes, I didn't notwant to make this a perfect and so
we had that and then we gotrid of the boat. Yesterday finally my
(17:07):
niece's husband came up and picked upthe boat, which has been sitting in
our garage for ever because the hitchwas broken and they were going to get
a hitch and fix it, butdecided before they did that they'd go on
vacation for three weeks. And Chriswas on me every day. When did
they coming to get the boat? They're on vacation, hunt they'll be and
(17:27):
I will tell you what. Sothen yesterday morning was the time. Decided
that they were going to come upand get it. And if my son
in law had not been there, that boat would still be there. They
came so ill equipped. They cameup with a new connection for the hitch,
but it had to be attached tothe trailer and needed we needed to
(17:51):
drill through some steel, and weneeded a saw to cut off a part
of that steel. Were sipricating sawor whatever they call it, and they
had none of that, none ofthat. And my son in law has
got all kinds of tools, andso he went home and picked up those
things and came down there. Thenhe did all the work. Well,
(18:12):
well, my uh, what wouldI call it? Um nephew in law.
I stood there and watched him withhis son, and we finally got
him out. Took a couple ofhours eat that thing together and get it
out of there. But so ashe's leaving, he looks back and he
said, well, thanks James, which is my son in law. And
(18:32):
I said, well, you oughtto thank his wife or he wouldn't have
been here to help you. AndI said, you would not have wanted
to face the wrath of my wifeif this boat wasn't gone when he gets
home. So, but it's gone. We now have a garage that I
still can't put a car in.We got a wet and my above ground
(18:53):
pool leaves this week. Greg gothold of me and said, I'm coming
over and picked that up. You'rechanging the hole environs. Yeah, except
that garage. I'm telling you.I was hoping a spark from the drill
would have set it on fire orsomething been easier and cleaning it. But
it's in kind of sad shape,it really is. It's got some roof
(19:14):
problems, et cetera. And I'vegotta seriously think about what I'm gonna do.
I need to replace my driveway, and I'm thinking when I replace that
driveway, I'm just going to builda new garage at the end of it.
But gosh, darn it, everythingI think about costs money. Why
is that? I don't know.Maybe that's just the way it goes.
(19:37):
It's a lot of money. Melin the morning. I'm fourteen thirty Kasi.
Okay, I had to disband myjelly and bacon Sam's too dry.
Too dry. Yeah, yeah,it kind of disheartens me a little bit.
I'll try it again somewhere down theroads. We get as we get
on down the road here and Iam in countdown mode. Ah you are,
(20:03):
indeed, Yeah, I again overthe weekend. I just I just
can't believe how close everything is nowand at time seems to be moving a
lot faster by the way. Ihave to look this up. I may
have misinformed some people, but Ithink we may be back at Electric services
(20:26):
this week. And I only saythat because don com you ever knowledgeable?
I said, he thought we werethere two weeks in a row, and
in past years, and I'm goingfor past years. We alternated between.
(20:53):
I think I may be able totell right now, Let's let's see if
I can get this up. Ialways feel bad when I tell somebody the
wrong police and I've had people.I've told people the wrong place at times
and uh, and then they gothere to the wrong place, and I
(21:18):
don't feel good about that. Yeah, people going to the wrong place.
But because you told I can see. That's how it's a bummer. Yeah,
yeah, we are. We're backat the Electric Services, so two
weeks in a row out of ElectricServices in the conference room. They're real
nice setting and comfortable, and wehad a lot of people there on Friday,
as you notice I heard, Yeah, yeah, there were just a
(21:42):
lot of people there, and therewill be again this week this Friday,
again at Electric Services. Then thelast two weeks of this month will be
out at the water plant. UMand Electric will join us on that and
it's a it's a five week monthfor breakfast Club. And on Friday,
June thirtieth, I will be doingmy last Breakfast Club as far as I
(22:07):
know. I mean, I haveoffered to continue, but that is entirely
up to the company how they wantto handle that. UM. But anyway,
last Friday and they kind of gotsome special things. Missus Guiasta's Susan
would like me to do my breakfastclub and then hang around afterwards for a
(22:30):
little bit of an open house. How did the water plant and allow you
my listeners to come on by andsay hi and thanks and wish me well.
I hope you do come on outand say go to hell something like
that. But well, if you'reif you're unfamiliar with the show, you're
just tuning in right now. Melhas worked his position as morning radio host
(22:55):
to aimes aims only live radio show. As far as morning shows go,
now, yeah, you've you've workedyour Mel for what thirty thirty two thirty
two years, thirty two years andhe is retiring at the end of the
month, in fact, on Junethirtieth. So seeing him there at the
water plant, that's significant. Goahead and come on buy say goodbye to
(23:18):
Mel, and maybe get those lastfew announcements out. As far as events
is within the community, maybe youwant to talk about your nonprofit or something
along those lines. Just come on, come on out, come early,
come later, it doesn't really matter. If you want to be on air,
come between seven thirty and eight thirtyin the morning and we'll get you
on, and we'll get you on. And that's true of every Friday.
(23:41):
Yeah, And I will tell youthe Breakfast Club has been so good to
me. I've meant so many peoplethrough that, I've meant great philanthropist.
I see, I've already got somenotifications for July, and of course I
won't be here, but nonetheless,Grace's Lemonade Ray is coming back, and
(24:02):
she's just been a charmer and kindof watching her grow up. She's off
to college here now, but she'sstill having the lemonade race to help Blank's
children hospital down and don't I'll giveyou more information on that. Uh,
maybe I can get her to comein early because I just like to see
her, her family. They werejust wonderful people. But that's that's what
(24:23):
the Breakfast Club has done for me. I've meant so many wonderful people.
And everywhere from Senior Show to theBoy Scout Pancake feed and and all those
things in between. And and I'llbe honest with you, my wife wants
wanted to have an event for me, and Susan has been kind enough to
(24:45):
have an event too, and Ijust I expressed myself and saying, you
know, what. I just kindof want to walk quietly into the night,
you know, because and I saythis in all humble but this community
has given me so much more thanI've given it, and I'm humbled by
(25:10):
it. I could not be theperson I am. I could not do
what I have done without this beingthe type of community is. There's no
other one like it anywhere. Therereally isn't. Philanthropy thrives in this city,
volunteerism thrives in this city, andit's just been an honor for me
(25:33):
all these years. I mean,we know that probably a couple of times
there there should have been tarn feathersand pitchforks out back here and torches.
Runneck guy out of town put themon a reel. Why I threw everybody
off. I took him in awild goose chase. Well Mell got behind
the microphone again. Yeah, yeah, No, I wasn't here, but
I would have you know, Yeah, And you know, you can't make
(25:59):
everybody happy all the time, butI sure tried, and that much I
know, and you all have mademe happy a good share of the time,
and I will forever be grateful forthat. Just know that ahead of
time, whether we get to saygoodbye personally or not. I love you,
and I care about you, andI care about this community. And
(26:22):
the fact that I'm not going tobe sitting here every morning does not mean
that my love or has lessoned ormy caring has lessoned for where I live,
and it will continue on and insome ways I will continue paying my
debt to this community over the years. So thank you, thank you for
(26:42):
letting me retire here. I thought, you know, yeah, you get
the Torrent feathers, get that oldsoul and so but we'll do it.
June thirtieth is the deadline. Andfor all that you've given me, thank
you. You know, I'll continueto try and pay back for the next
three weeks. I'm not I don'twant to be called a short timer.
(27:03):
You know, there is something whenyou get to my age, there was
certain phrases. You don't want tohear a short timer, or you're going
to pull the plug. No,you would never like to hear that.
So yeah, all those little termslike that. But anyway, let's take
a break, maybe grab a littlemore music this morning, because you are
(27:23):
the inspiration. You know what,if you love somebody and they're inspirational and
guess what, the Birthday Club hasone of the most inspirational people I love
in it today and she is sowonderful over the years at making sure I
know everybody else's birthday that she knows, and today's her day to shine.
Loyal listener, Connie Harden. Yeah, as birthday is today, Connie,
(27:47):
Happy birthday, Happy birthday, Connie. I don't know how many I certainly
don't know over the years how manyshe owns half a Hallmark. Oh okay,
that's what I was going to say. How look back at that wall,
I tell you I Mel's got anold wall here of Connie Connie hardened
cards. Speaking of which, ifyou have a birthday today, in addition
to Connie's name, we'll accept otherentrants, although we really have to say
(28:15):
Connie is our number one, regardlessof of who who has entered into the
contest. Today, we've got tosay thanks to Connie. But there is
one slot available. Call five onfive two three two fourteen thirty. You
may win a free birthday cake orbouquet of balloons from one or the other
of your Aims high vs. Andthat will also put you in the running.
(28:37):
So go ahead, give us acall five on five two three two,
fourteen thirty to let us know thename of your own birthday or that
of someone else's, and we'll goahead and put their name in the raffle.
You know, I suspect there isno one out there with a birthday,
or Connie would have reported it's likely. Alright, seven thirty one,
(28:59):
here your news, mel in themorning. I'm fourteen thirty ks. I
just grabbed the phone there and getchatting away, and thank goodness Kovac was
here and kept me on the honestyhere because right now it is time for
your rushmanist report. In joining methis morning, searchant Chad Lovey, who
(29:21):
actually had his own two day weekendthis weekend. Hi Chad, Hey,
good morning. Yeah I did havea two day weekend. It was actually
a weekend on a weekend. Howdid it did you feel normal? I
kind of did. Yeah. Idon't know what normal is, but yeah,
yeah, well in your job, yeah, an actual weekend that everybody
gets off is unusual. It is, yeah, that rotating schedule. Yeah,
(29:47):
and you had plenty to do,huh I did. I'm actually working
on some home improvement projects, soI've got quite the list of things to
do. Are you a handy butI am a little bit. Yeah.
I like to do my own andstuff and kind of do the hands on
thing for sure. Yeah, didyou do that growing up? I mean,
was your dad a handyman kind ofguy and did a lot of it?
(30:07):
Yes, he did, and Ilearned a lot from him, just
kind of well, you learned tofix a lot on your own. And
yeah, I mean fact, whenI was a kid, we didn't have
YouTube and things like that to lookup. Now, yeah, just the
shortest you know, short if youcan do a little research on the internet,
and yeah, find all kinds ofways to fix things good and bad.
But hum, I know what you'retalking about. Yeah. Yeah,
but with my dad to do it, I learned how to dial a phone
(30:30):
and say, can you come overand help me? Can you eld mister
plumber? Can you come over? Can you know? My dad? He's
explained it this way to me.He says I could do it, but
he said that way, I'm cheatingsomebody out of their livelihood. Well there
is that, right, you know, there is that. He needs to
make money too, so I feelguilty. So, yeah, I did
(30:52):
not get a lot of hands onexperience. But I'll tell you who did
was Chris my wife. Her dadwas handy and and she kind of hung
around him. And when there's stuffto be done at my house, that's
who I call on. And Iknow Chris gets after it. She takes
care of things. Yeah, yeah, it takes care of me. Yeah,
well, I mean, speaking ofthings. But anyway, yeah,
(31:15):
it sounds like he had a goodweekend. How are we doing out there
this morning? We are doing sofar a okay, looks like traffics moving
along pretty decent about on the eastside of town at the moment. So
but everything looks pretty good and sunshining. And tell you what, we had
a nice weekend of weather. Yeah, and boy, today's going to be
nice. I mean we're getting whatI call the perfect temperatures at the moment.
(31:37):
Absolutely, That's what I would say. The same thing. I was
out working yesterday in my yard butalmost a little chilly. You needed a
sweashirt yesterday morning? Yes, wedid for June. You know, I'll
take it, that's all right.Yeah, Chris brindled our breakfast out yesterday
and oh wow, nice sitting aroundthe patio table with the white shirt on
but uh, yeah it was.It was just a good day. Yeah,
(32:00):
absolutely, And today's looking the same. I mean, I'm with you
that, yeah, looking like agreat day. The only thing that was
bad yesterday is I think the poolclosed. It was too cold. Oh
well, yeah, you'll have thaton a day when it barely reaches seventy
degrees. So yeah, I don'thave been a little chilly. I think
they'll make it today, but Idon't know. I don't take my word
for it, folks, But butyeah, I wouldn't have wanted to be
(32:21):
in the pool yesterday. So therewere some people in earlier. I think
they like the river walkers or whateverthey are doing the exercise thing. And
then I think they shut it downafter that. So all right, nothing
shut down today. But of coursemajor construction is still going on in our
city. And be aware of thosespots and drive cautiously through them, and
(32:43):
you should be all right, ofcourse, absolutely, just watch yourself and
enjoy the sunshine, but don't forgetto pay attention to the road. Yeah,
Dean Sayer is going to join mein a little bit here. We're
gonna get updated on twenty fourth andstaying, oh that I would like to
hear that update. I'll listen. That'd be nice of you. I would
appreciate it. Yeah, absolutely,I'm always willing to listen. All right,
(33:06):
Jed, we listen. I'll letyou get back at it, my
friend. Welcome back to work andwe'll talk to you later this week.
Sounds good. We'll talk to youall soon and have a great day you
two. Bye bye bye. SergeantChad Lovey of the LAPD Lovely Ames Police
Department bringing us our Rushmanist Report, which has brought to you by Mary Greeley
Medical Center, doing what's right? Are you ready? They're ready for you
(33:30):
mel in the morning. I'm fourteenthirty ks. I just grabbed the phone
there and get chatting away, andthank goodness Kovac was here and kept me
on the honesty here because right nowit is time for your Rushmanist report.
In joining me this morning, SergeantChad Lovey, who actually had his own
(33:53):
two day weekend this weekend. HiChad, hey, good morning. Yeah
I did have a two day weekend. It was actually a weekend on a
weekend. How did it did youfeel normal? I kind of did.
Yeah. I don't know what normalis, but yeah, yeah, Well
in your job. Yeah, anactual weekend that everybody gets off is unusual.
(34:14):
It is. Yeah, that rotatingschedule. Yeah, and you had
plenty to do, huh, Idid. I'm actually working on some home
improvement projects, so I've got quitethe list of things to do. Are
you a handy but I am alittle bit. Yeah. I like to
do my own stuff and kind ofdo the hands on thing for sure.
Yeah. Did you do that growingup? I mean, was your dad
(34:35):
a handyman kind of guy and dida lot of it? He did,
and I learned a lot from him, just kind of well, you learned
to fix a lot on your own. And yeah, I mean fact,
when I was a kid, wedidn't have YouTube and things like that to
look up. Now, yeah, just a shortness, you know. Short
You can do a little research onthe internet and yeah, find all kinds
of ways to fix things, goodand bad. But hum, I know
what you tire about. Yeah.Yeah, but with my dad, I
(35:00):
learned how to dial a phone andsay, can you come over and help
me? Can you hello, misterplumber? Can you come over? Can
you know? My dad He's explainedit this way to me. He says
I could do it, but hesaid that way, I'm cheating somebody out
of their livelihood. Well there isthat, right, you know, there
is that he needs to make moneytoo, so I feel guilty. So
(35:22):
yeah, I did not get alot of hands on experience. But I'll
tell you who did was Chris mywife. Her dad was handy and and
she kind of hung around him.And when there's stuff to be done at
my house, that's who I callon. And I know Chris gets after
it. She takes care of things. Yeah, yeah, it takes care
of me. Yeah, well,I mean, speaking of things. But
(35:45):
anyway, yeah, it sounds likehe had a good weekend. How are
we doing out there this morning? We are doing so far a okay,
looks like traffics moving along pretty decentabout on the east side of town at
the moment. So but everything lookspretty good and sunshining. And tell you
what, we have a nice weekendof weather. Yeah, and boy,
today's going to be nice. Imean we're getting what I call the perfect
(36:05):
temperatures at the moment. Absolutely,That's what I would say. The same
thing. I was out working yesterdayin my yard, but almost a little
chilly. You needed a sweatshirt yesterdaymorning, Yes, we did for June.
You know what, I'll take it, that's all right. Yeah,
Chris brindled our breakfast out yesterday andoh wow, nice sitting around the patio
table with the sweat shirt on.But yeah, it was. It was
(36:28):
just a good day. Yeah, absolutely, And today's looking the same.
I mean, I'm with you that, Yeah, looking like a great day.
The only thing that was bad yesterdayis I think the pool closed.
It was too cold. Oh well, yeah, you'll have that on a
day when it barely reaches seventy degrees. So yeah, I don't have a
little chilly. I think they'll makeit today, but I don't know.
I don't take my word for it, folks, But but yeah, I
(36:51):
wouldn't have wanted to be in thepool yesterday. So there were some people
in earlier. I think they're likethe river walkers or whatever. They are
doing the exercise thing, and thenI think they shut it down after that.
So all right, nothing shut downtoday. But of course, major
construction is still going on in ourcity. And be aware of those spots
and drive cautiously through them. Andyou should be all right, of course,
(37:15):
absolutely, just watch yourself and enjoythe sunshine. But don't forget to
pay attention to the road. Yeah, Dean Sayer is going to join me
in a little bit here. We'regonna get updated on twenty fourth and staying,
oh that I would like to hearthat update. I'll have to listen
in that'd be nice of you.I would appreciate it. Yeah, absolutely,
I'm always willing to listen. Allright, Jed, well listen,
(37:37):
I'll let you get back at it, my friend. Welcome back to work
and we'll talk to you later thisweek. Sounds good. We'll talk to
yels and have a great day.You two. Bye bye bye. Sergeant
Chad Loving of the LAPD Lovely AmesPolice Department bringing us our Rushmanist Report,
which is brought to you by MaryGreeley Medical Center doing what's right? Are
(37:59):
you ready? They're ready for you, mel in the morning. I'm fourteen
thirty Kaesi, and I am goingto get with one of the busiest guys
at the CD of Aimes and thatcivil engineer, Dean Sayer. And Dean,
good morning, how are you?Good morning? Doing pretty good?
How about you? I'm doing greatand I call you the busiest guy because
(38:21):
I don't know, maybe it's inmy imagination. Maybe it's just different this
year, but it seems like thereare more projects this summer and i've seen
in a long time. Well, they're definitely not all mine, which is
good. Otherwise I probably would beabout the busiest person. Yeah, yeah,
well I was. If you wantmore, I'll push for more money
for you. I mean, Iwouldn't be a one hundred percent against that.
(38:44):
Well, you have got one ofthe busiest and probably noticed projects going
on right now at twenty fourth andStaying. Yeah, that one's been pretty
busy. There's a lot of trafficthat goes see that Staying in twenty fourth
intersection, and actually here today we'redoing a pretty big traffic shift up there.
We're kind of get everything down, almost everything down on the east side
(39:07):
of that project and out popping itover to the west side. But it'll
be closing that intersection, that westhalf, the intersection of twenty fourth and
Staying or twenty fourth and George WatchingtonCarver the west side is it'll be closing
and then then a detour out beingset up. It'll be it'll stay pretty
(39:27):
busy up there, especially for thenext several weeks as they knock out that
half the intersection and work on puttingit back together. Now is that are
they using Will they be using thenew concrete? Then yep, we'll be
switching everybody over to the east sideand then so they'll all be running on
new concrete essentially from from Blankington Burgup to the north side of twenty fourth
(39:50):
Street. And how far up northwill that go into Somerset. It should
stay just on the north side andthe intersection, so we won't be going
out of it, okay, Andthat that is a monumental task. And
the reason for that project was whatwere you doing there? That one's mostly
(40:13):
just for the pavement condition of stayingit was in pretty poor shape, and
the intersections too. And then andthen we'll be updating like the traffic signalizations,
a couple of new heads and puttingin like a radar defection system in
there. And then it's also atwo year project. Well, we'll be
jumping over and going from the intersectionover to the railroad tracks next year.
(40:37):
So it's it's a big project.Yeah. That railroad tracks is the way
down there, isn't it. Yeah, So that one will be that part
of it will take a little bitlonger because that one involves quite a bit
of storm work that will be puttingin some new storm lines and intakes where
staying as things going pretty quick becauseas early as far as considering a lot
(40:59):
of our project, so there's notallow utilities on staying as far as storm
and sanitary and water and that kindof stuff that we're working on this year.
What is uh, is it fairto say what a life expectancy of
pavement is? Usually life or thelife of sections the pavement is designed for
like thirty to fifty years, butthat also thirty to fifty years includes regular
(41:24):
maintenance and patching and different things likethat to kind of keep it try to
keep it up to date. Butusually they're good for thirty to fifty years.
There's what they're designed for. Okay, okay, And of course that
would depend on the amount of trafficet cetera. And yeah, weather conditions
et cetera, which we know sometimeslikes to buckle pavement, etc. Yeah,
(41:47):
it's it's tough in Iowa with allthe free spot or in the spring
and fall and not those pretty roughon some of those roads. Overall here
in the city, the road's inpretty good change. Yeah, I'm not
too bad. We have like apavement it's called a PCI Pavement Index Mission
(42:07):
index, and it goes up fromI think was zero do one hundred,
and our average for the whole citya summary right around sixty, which comparable
to other areas around the state, other cities, isn't too bad. It's
that's what usually people shoot for,is at sixty five sixty kind of area.
(42:30):
So we're not too bad as faras that. I mean, it's
always nice to be higher. Yeah, but well there's a lot of streets
out there, so it's kind ofhard to try to keep up with it.
Now, who's got the sixteenth anddef project? That would be her
fist And that's probably about the busiestone, my potential, especially if you
(42:51):
ask him that one's the busiest one. Little prejudice there maybe, but that's
it. That's been an ongoing quitean ongoing project, hasn't it. Yeah,
that one's moving along pretty good, though. I've been talking to him
a little bit about that they've beenputting in a new storm storm trunk line
on that south side where they're workingright now, and that's kind of kind
(43:14):
of a little bit of head schedulesounds like, which is nice, so
they're hopefully be looking at starting todegrade and maybe even paved that south side
or everything closed right now. Yeah, but then once they're done with that,
they'll end up flipping over to thenorth side. And I'm doing the
same thing again. Yeah, Iwas gonna say on when they're traveling the
(43:36):
new pavement up there, still wouldadvise them to use some caution because I
was looking a couple of days agowhen I was going up through there.
But they will continue doing some constructionwork on that east side with some backfilling,
etc. I expect. Yeah.I think they still a some backfilling
and there might even be a littlebit of sidewalk and path kind of stuff
(44:00):
too, I believe maybe on thesouth side there. So there's definitely going
to be some traffic control and differentthings. And a lot of that traffic
control too of how much goes throughthere, how many trucks and cars.
I know, it gets kind ofmoved around and shifted and stuff like that
too, so it kind of makesyou have to pay extra careful retention up
(44:21):
there. Yeah, but I thinksomething let me recommend this to some drivers
may get caught in that line oftraffic there take your golf clubs in your
car. Yeah, play around togolf and by that time you'll be up
at the intersection. Yeah, thatone's is your own South six teams trying
to get on the Duff, Thatone can get pretty backed up. I've
(44:44):
been trying to work my way toSouth Thames and then I've kind of forgotten
and gotten there and sometimes I'd justtake a university and these airport road instead.
I never thought I'd use South Duffas an alternative, but yeah,
that gets so congested up there.I find myself using South up Change.
Yeah, I've done that too. It's like I'm just gonna go around Duff
instead of trying to get to Allsixteenth now Yeah, yeah, exactly right.
(45:08):
Well, my friends, sounds likewe're on target. Things are getting
better as we go, and we'lllook forward to talking to you again.
Sounds good. I'm sure I'll bearound. I'm sure you will too.
Thanks Dean, Yeah, thanks Mail. We'll see it all right, buddy,
Bye bye. Dean Sayer. Ofcourse, one of the engineers with
(45:28):
the City of Ames got that twentyfourth and staying project. Many of you
who travel through there probably cursed shakingyour hand at the sky. But I'll
tell you what they're doing a tremendousjob. It's moving along in a timely
fashion. And when it's all saidand done, it and be a much
better place to travel, that's forsure. Seven fifty eight. Mel in
the morning, I'm fourteen thirty kA s. I Scott and I'll be
(45:52):
back after the news. Mel inthe morning, I'm fourteen thirty k A
S. I's eight fifteen and we'rejust kind of sitting back. Time's going
fast, isn't it. This thinghas just been clipping along this morning,
is yeah, going along? AndI am awaiting. I think I will
get a call from the Mayor,John Hayle is there's a council meeting tomorrow
(46:14):
night, but he may be tiedup with something else, and we'll find
out what's going on there. Iwas surprised to see. I was looking
ahead here at the agenda and oneof the things I noticed, And I'll
ask John about this when he joinsme, or I hopefully will join me.
Is an award of valor given toCommander Jason Tuttle of the Ames Police
(46:38):
Department. I'm just curious about thatone. I'm not quite sure what the
award of valor is involved in that. But if there's any but one deserving
of an award of valor, it'dbe my buddy, Commander Jason Tuttle.
So yeah, we'll see that. But anyway, other than that, the
usual things out there. The mostthat they go through consent what they call
(47:01):
the consent agenda, which kind ofdeals with the liquid licenses or catering licenses
or some kind of parking or uh, all kinds of different things in that,
and that's usually a quick run forthem. It's consent to do all
these things, Ragbry coming up.I'm sure there's gonna be some things there
(47:23):
and they'll be dealing with the finaldraft of the Climate Action Plan will be
on the agenda, so to speak. Um, so we'll wait and see.
As I say, no obligation. The thing is is if these folks
who are kind enough to come onthe air with me and share some of
(47:44):
the things coming up, Scott,we appreciate them doing that, but we
know things pop up yea, andother business might have to be taken care
of, and it is nice tobe walked through that. That agenda does
such a great up. He isso knowledge too, I guess he's should
be, but he is. Heis sharp. He just amazes me sometimes
(48:05):
how much he works at being mayorof this city. I mean it could
be, you know, just showingup for an opening here, doing this
or doing that. But he isinto the work, as is I think
our city council of making sure everythingruns right and goes right along. I
include in that group of knowledgeable peopleas our city manager who I'm proud to
(48:29):
call a friend for so many years, Steve Schenker. And I don't know,
Steve's been there for many mares.I thought maybe he'd retire before I
did. I wasn't quite sure what'sgoing on there, but I'm glad he
didn't, and he has done amazingthings. I really mean that he managed
to get some excellent staff. Thiscity is well run, is a well
(48:52):
oiled machine, and I know someof you do have some bumps in the
road, so to speak, withhow things are going. That's going to
be with a city this size. But I think in the overall picture,
wonderful credit rating important work being donein a timely fashion. Yeah, I'm
(49:13):
still living here, will be foras long as I can, as long
as they'll have me. That's forsure. We're gonna take a break.
Welcome back with more mel in theMorning with Kovac here on fourteen thirty mel
in the Morning on fourteen thirty Kasialong with Scott Kovac. We had an
interesting conversation over the weekend with mywife, who I can convince once in
(49:37):
a while that I am well informed. But as you know, we had
to cut down a couple of ashtrees this year and I was surprised to
know, and I wanted to sharethis information again because I think it's important
because we are a tree city.We are a tree city USA. Here
in the de Ratio reeked havoc throughhere with tree and the ashbore has also
(50:02):
reached a lot of difficulty for ushere and we've lost a lot of good
trees out there. But we aretalking about Chris and I were talking about
replacing the two trees in our frontyard and weren't quite sure what kind we
would get. But I think Igot my mind made up for me going
to get a native tree native toIowa. And the reason for that right
(50:24):
now is because I'm cheap. Butthe other side of that is the city
is offering a rebate if you plantnative trees out here, a seventy five
dollars per tree rebate up to seventyfive dollars per tree rebate up to two
trees a year, and I thought, I said to Chris, I said,
(50:47):
well, we were going to puttrees out there anyway, why not
get a native tree and take advantageof that seventy five dollars rebate. And
I was surprised because she said,oh, well, now do we really
get a rebeat? And I said, no, I'm making it up.
I'm taking it out of my pocket. No. Yeah, And I said,
(51:09):
I think it's a great program,but that when we're talking about the
city and how wonderful some things are, this rebate for the trees, I
think is wonderful. Obviously it affectsme personally. And we will go out
to my favorite tree place, andshe wants to get a more established tree.
(51:30):
She doesn't want to go out therewith the sapling. She wants some
more established tree, which is goingto cost a little more money, and
then have the landscaping place plant them, not have us go out and plant
them, to make sure everything isdone right. So I'm thinking maybe next
weekend we'll get out and get acouple of trees. Friends, the grass
(51:52):
is just beginning to grow in thosebare spots, but not prolifically, and
I'm impatient. So I think weget a tree there, it will justify
a little bit of bare spot aroundthere until it grows in. But yeah,
the rebate programs. Now, theother thing I'm I want to get
is a rainbarrel. And there's Ithink fifty dollars rebate on a rain barrel
(52:16):
if you go out and get one. And to me, that's practical,
especially we're still talking about a droughtseason here in our area. That utilizing
any rain that we get to useon the plants or other things like that
makes perfect sense to me and willhelp with the drought situation. So I
(52:42):
think the rain barrels in my planshere and we have the rainbarrel. One
thing I'd like to note to Meltis that the tree program is good for
up to two trees. You right, can't go every every tree you plant.
You can't find a forest, Youcan't plan a forest with seventy five
(53:06):
dollars UH per tree per tree, but you can get one or two.
Yeah, I mean you can buymore. Right, the rebate is limited
to two native native trees. Iwant to do want to emphasize the native
trees. I don't know. Iwould think one would plant a native tree
as much as I would love tohave a palm. Uh you know,
(53:29):
get some coconuts and things, butI sort of wish the coast closer to
us. Yeah, it's something thoselines. But uh yeah, and I'm
debating. Chris thinks I'm crazy.I said, we got to make sure
you're getting planets, are going toput up a hammock, and she says
you're not gonna go and then getin a hammock in the front yard by
Grand Avenue, which I'm not sobut but anyway, Yeah, check into
(53:52):
that. If you go to theCity of Ames website, you'll find all
the information you need to know howyou can get a rebate on a native
tree planning. So I just wantedto pass that information onto you this morning
because I think that's such a neatprogram and I take great pride in us
(54:13):
being a tree city. And Ithought the datio was going to make as
a shrub city because it took downso many Did you get a chance to
travel around during the deratio, Yeah, yeah, it was pretty intense.
Well, seeing a huge tree uprooted, not just knocked over, but laying
(54:35):
on its side with its roots upout of the ground was to me distressing,
distressing, and it was a littlebit of everywhere out there, and
it's amazing to me. We didn'tlose any trees during the datio. But
again Emerald Ashboard said, hey, those two look delicious, let's chew them
(54:55):
up. And and the Costmel andChrist a little bit of money there.
But anyway, I don't know howmany other people out there are still suffering
with the ashboard. Some were ableto treat it in time. I wish
we'd realize we had no idea,to be honest with you, what kind
of trees we had in our frontyard and we discovered they were ash too
(55:16):
late. There was no cure forthese trees. Um, I don't know,
but I would go with now,I see what what do you think
is a native tree to oak?Is that? Imagine an oak as a
native tree? Hell elm ash ofcourse, as yeah, I'm not gonna
plant an ash tree again. Butno, I thought about an oak tree.
(55:38):
I've always been impressed with oak trees. You know, that's where the
village. Smithy had his his businesswhen I was growing up, So under
the old oak tree. Yeah.Besides you can tie yellow ribbon around it.
Yeah. Anyway, we'll take abreak. Welcome back with more Mel
(55:59):
in the Mornings. God Kovak onfourteen thirty mel in the Morning, Scott
Kovac on fourteen thirty. K haveyou uh have you been keeping a scorecard?
Have you been keeping count? Scott? Of Republican candidates for president?
I mean the tally. I don'tknow. It's getting out of hand as
(56:20):
as some some election cycles as itas it may. Um, how what
how many are we up to atthis point? I'm trying to find out
right now. I can't you know, without a scorecard, it's kind of
hard to keep. All I knowis uh, um that I don't know
if we're done yet. I don'tknow. It's more people to pile on
(56:42):
into the race. Oh let's seehere. Uh did it to dude?
Because there are You're right, Imean there are a lot, and uh
it's it's there we go, youknow, maybe just momentarily three eight nine,
and I don't know if they're allhere at ten eleven, twelve thirteen.
(57:05):
In ten eleven thirteen, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, or
those those ones are there may beI think there might be fifteen now.
Um uh, well, I'm I'mgiving you people who are still thinking about
declaring. Um. Liz Cheney isstill thinking about it. John Bolton is
(57:30):
still thinking about it. Glenn Yuncundfrom Virginia governor, he's thinking about it.
Uh. There's only two that declaredthey aren't going to run. Mike
Pompeo and Chris the New Knew arenot planning on a run. There.
Uh, and I'm looking at someof these. How big a factor do
(57:53):
you think age is going to bein this election? I mean in the
twenty twenty four Yeah. Yeah, that's an excellent question because we have had
a couple of older statesmen are oldolder business mogul, yeah, and an
old senator. The question is dowe do we see a need for youth?
(58:16):
Is that? Is that something demandbeing an older, older person?
Um? I do not. Imean I know why, but I don't
think age should have any place inthis except if it presents number one,
a health problem, A health problemor a mental deficiency dementia, Alzheimer's or
(58:45):
or a disease. Um. Ithink people need to um listen to the
subjects of the election and age shouldhave nothing to do with it. You
know, if if you were goingto work somewhere, if you're going to
work somewhere and you were asked yourage and you were denied the opportunity for
(59:09):
that job at age, that's againstthe law. You cannot discriminate. So
why for the highest office in thiscountry would age discrimination be a part of
I mean, and if you werelooking at if it were a race between
Joe Biden who will be eighty one, eighty two somewhere in there, and
Donald Trump, who will be seventyseven or seventy eight, just not that
(59:32):
much difference, just not that muchdifference. Then you go for the younger
one. Nicky Hayley's fifty one, that's not very old. Asa has or
Haytiens and Hutchinson, former Arkansas governor, is running. He is seventy two.
Most of these, Mike Pence asixty four, Christie is sixty and
(01:00:00):
then Doug Bergham who's North Dakota governor, who just declared, by the way,
he's also sixty six. So alot of John Bolton if he would
run, He's seventy four. SoI don't know, but does does youth
(01:00:21):
become an important part of that electionbecause a lot of people out there are
saying, we need, excuse me, younger guidance, someone who may be
more familiar with the ex generation orwhatever generation there is out there, rather
than the boomers. We boomers areare on the way out, so to
(01:00:45):
speak, and our concerns are ourfocus of concern is definitely different than some
of the younger generations. There's somevalidity in there, but right now,
given what's out there and this manycandidates, it's overwhelming. And we are
(01:01:07):
a year and a half away fromthat election, and we're going to be
inundated. We're going to be inundatedevery day. I am so listen.
I will say this about the Trumpindictments. Go ahead, get them done,
do what you gotta do, butquit talking about it. And I
(01:01:30):
know it's news, but there's certainparts I don't want fifty or one hundred
different analysts telling me what's going tohappen because they don't know. They can
guess, make it their most educatedguests, but in all honesty, nobody
knows. It's a trial. Andunless you can read that jury's mind,
(01:01:54):
etc. You don't know. Soevery one of these so called and I
put quotes around experts, well,he read a law book when he was
in high school and very knowledgeable.Noise not But anyway we're doing again,
you're talking about learning a lesson. But media right now, you know,
(01:02:17):
I'm a part of it, isdoing what they did in twenty sixteen,
and that is putting too much emphasison one candidate, and that candidate is
Donald Trump. And I will agreethat. So some of what they're doing
is news, but some of whatthey're doing is not news. And one
(01:02:39):
of the things that was focused onwas people talking to people who support Trump,
which I personally don't understand. That'sjust me, but these are very
at least the ones they interviewed, and I feel like there may be a
slant going on there. I veryhateful people are very angry, very mad
(01:03:01):
people. And I can't remember whoover the weekend was talking about we are
going to be down there in Floridawhen mister Trump shows up for his arrangement
on Tuesday. And you should knowthat most of us are card carrying in
(01:03:22):
our A members. Why is thatimportant? Are they trying to say?
In their own little style, We'regonna have guns with us or something like
that. I just it's distressing. It's absolutely distressing. And why why do
you open your yap. We're allmembers, and that's okay. I have
(01:03:46):
nothing against the NRA. I accepttheir agenda sometimes, but if you're a
card carrying member the NRA, Ihave nothing against that, except their agenda
scares me sometimes and and I justfeel that was an unnecessary statement. You
just find we're gonna be down there, we're going to protest, But why
(01:04:09):
do you throw in we're in oura members. It's ridiculous. Tired of
it. I'm tired of being scared. And sometimes do do we think about
it more often? You think? Now? Do you think about it?
I know, right after Denver,Colorado had the theater shootings, I found
(01:04:29):
myself looking over my shoulder when Iwent to a movie, you know,
looking around, see you was inthere, that uneasy feeling. And now,
thank god, we've been able tospread that more. We look over
my shoulder to grocery store, lookover my shoulder to shopping mall. It's
it shouldn't be that way, andwe shouldn't have to feel that. What's
(01:04:49):
the answer now, don't know, don't know. I know one thing,
I don't have a sunburn on myshoulder. We can tell you that.
But anyway, here we go,and uh, it's going to be a
roller coaster ride, it's uh.And we're going to be sick of this
election before we ever get there,if we're not already. But anyway,
(01:05:14):
do you think it would be understatementfor me to say it's going to be
interesting? Oh, it will beuntil it's not. Yeah. Well,
and what do you what do youthink Scott if if Trump is found guilty?
Huh? And that would take himout of the race? Um?
Who's next? Up? Who?Who out of those thirteen candidates or whatever
(01:05:41):
is the next front horse? Andis it DeSantis? He? I find
him as distasteful as I do Trumpalmost Uh. And um, I have
said I think number one you mentionedLiz Cheney. I think she's interesting and
a very intelligent person, but Ithink because of her agenda and she was
(01:06:06):
not very popular during her when shewas in the office because of the Trumps
nights or whatever you want to callhim. Put the who do honor?
But the curse honor? And theone I find interesting right now and he's
probably the most verbal, and whosecampaign is most active at the moment is
(01:06:30):
Tim Scott. I find Tim Scottto me the most interesting candidate right now.
I can't say I like everything he'ssaying, but he's making a lot
of sense. But as I explainedto Scott, I said, don't tell
me what the problems are. Iknow what the problems are. Offer me
up the solutions. Yeah, yeah, give me solutions. We all know
(01:06:53):
what the problems are in this country. What we lack is a solution of
those problems. And I'm anxious tosee how what is brought forth by these
candidates, and maybe that'll determine afront runner, I hope. So anyway,
we'll watch a lot of things towatch, going to drive us crazy,
but we'll eventually get there. Therewill be another election. Be interesting
(01:07:16):
to see how it goes. MelOn the morning, he's got kback from
fourteen thirty k A s I.I just want to remind people again,
and I think I should about thebreakfast club because I misinformed him last Friday,
And I want to make sure ifyou weren't listening earlier, you do
understand that I will be back atElectric Services this Friday morning from seven thirty
(01:07:39):
to day thirty. And I dowant to remind you that if you are
a nonprofit agency out there and youhave a special event coming up, like
the Boys and Girls Club a purseauction. I thought that was interesting and
they and she said, they've gotsome of the man crossbody. Have you
seen those messenger back? Messenger back? Yeah, that's what they call him,
(01:08:01):
isn't it. Yeah? Yeah, what do you think of those?
Oh, I've had a couple.Yeah, have you really YEA, Yeah.
I carry a large leather briefcase,I guess is what it is.
I wouldn't call it a briefcase.It's it's like a satchel or something.
It's buckles up and and things likethat. I like it. It's convenient.
(01:08:23):
Uh. And I've I'm not worna fanny pack for a long time.
Did you ever have a fanty pack? Not know why? Um,
just seems like look stupid. Ifelt that way. Yeah, Yeah,
you didn't think it was something youshould. People still wearing them now.
Once in a while you'll see oneand I laugh. It'd be, you
(01:08:44):
know, wear a fanny pack withyour leisure suit. Um, but I
will tell you I have dropped mybillfold enough lately has fallen out of my
pants pocket. Lately, I'm carryingsomething I never did, carrying my billfold
in my front pocket and it wasalways a bad pocket thing. But my
back pockets have no button on them, which I think is important because usually
blue jeans and it falls out.I've lost it a couple of times.
(01:09:09):
I think, goodness, honest, people found it and got it to me.
So sometimes those things make a littlebit of sense to me. I
was not big on the fanny backI had one. I didn't wear it.
It was low mileage. I wasn'tcomfortable with it. But in practicality
it made sense. But you know, I don't think my wife's purses makes
(01:09:32):
sense because they can't find anything inthem. They've got it in there,
they know they've got it, itjust takes some thirty minutes to find it
with all the other things they gotin there. Speaking of purses, another
accoutrement, Yes, I'd like tobring up a hat. It is that
we draw the Happy Birthday Club winnersout of oh and we have today.
(01:09:56):
We have Connie Harden and Tim Borell. Those two are only entrance. They're
also both winners. Yeah, sowe'd like to let you both know that.
If you're listening right now, ofcourse, we'll be giving you a
call, congratulating you on your happybirthday and letting you know that you've won
a prize from one or the otherof the Ames high VS. Congratulations.
I'm looking up for Doris, I'vegot I've got one somewhere at home,
(01:10:21):
but I don't know where. Ithink my wife hit it. She doesn't
like me in my mafia hat,as she calls it, but I like
wearing them. And right now I'mlooking for a nice Panama, nice straw
Panama hat to wear this summer. But she's kind of particular. She doesn't
mind my flat hat, my leatherhat, the driving the driver's cap.
(01:10:43):
Yeah, she doesn't mind it somuch. She's used to seeing me in
that. But if I put onlike a Fedora, a nice hat,
no, she's she's not up forthat. So we'll see. But I
think I can sell the Panama toher. I'm a believer in wearing a
hat out there with the UVS that'sin a bald head. Nice to have
a little cover on that cake,so to speak. Well, what do
(01:11:05):
you say, should we get outof here, chill tomorrow. Yeah,
let's head out and be on backat six am to one. All right,
you do the same if you know, don't hit on out, keep
it on fourtune thirty k h.We will be back in your ear tomorrow
morning at six am or whenever youget there.
