Who's Talk fourteen thirty KASI six sixteen. On a Tuesday morning, Dave sprow
Long with Scott Kovac with you fillingin for mel in the morning as he
burns to another vacation day. Goodmorning, Scott, morning. How's it
going, Dave? I'm all right. I always like to start day with
a great song, and we gotone courtesy of the Beach Boys this morning.
Indeed, are you familiar with thatsong? Yes, yeah, I
(00:23):
am. I am familiar with thatone. Are you familiar with the fact
that today is Brian Wilson's birthday?I did not know that one of the
founding members of the Beach Boys, and they're they're key songwriter and creative driving
force. Turning eighty one today.M Brian Wilson was born in Inglewood,
(00:44):
California, raised in Hawthorne, California, which is you know, greater Los
Angeles area. And uh it wasBrian Wilson, his brothers Carl and now
escapes my mind. I could tryto find it here, but another good
name I put up. Yeah,I pull up the you know, the
(01:07):
background info here and uh, tryto Chuck, Let's try, Chuck,
try to figure us out anyway.Um, Carl and Dennis were his brothers,
and uh their cousin Mike Love anda friend of theirs, Al Jardine.
They got together in nineteen sixty oneto form a band that they called
(01:34):
the Pendle Tones. The Pendle Tone. Yes, the name Beach Boys didn't
actually come from the Beach Boys themselves. Pendle Tones. That sounds like some
sort of quartet out of London orsomething. It could be high society.
Yeah, we all the Pendle Tonesexactly, not not quite uh for for
Carl Wilson and the guys, butfor Brian Wilson and Carl and Dennis and
(01:57):
everybody else with the Beach Boys.So they actually they had a song that
was kind of a regional hit inLos Angeles called Surfing. You can believe
that if you can believe the BeachBoys put a song about that's kind of
a hard left. Yeah. Itwas written by Brian Wilson at the urging
of his brother Dennis, because youknow, surfing was becoming quite the quite
(02:22):
the rage in southern California, andit caught on in in the Los Angeles
area and actually reached number seventy fiveon the Billboard sales charts. But the
label that the Pendle Tones were originallywith actually had some business trouble and they
(02:43):
sold the Beach Boys master recordings toCapitol Records, and it was Capitol Records
that tagged them with the name theBeach Boys, and Wilson, along with
his co writers custom new tracks includingSurfings, Far Are four h nine and
some others, and that that kindof really launched them, you know,
(03:07):
putting those out on Capitol and gettinginto the uh, the zeitgeist as it
were. I think that was agood call on the part of Capitol Records.
I mean, if the first hithad been something like Cheshire, then
I could see Pendleton's like continuing onthat. But because he went with a
beach themed song, yeah, probablysafety rebrand. Yeah, that's it Probably
(03:30):
was a good move over all.Though you know, maybe you could argue
that later in the you know, gotten in nineteen sixty five to sixty six
from Pet Sounds came out that songwe played Golos from from the Pet Sounds
album. Um, they kind ofgot away from the whole beach surfing persona.
And one of the things about BrianWilson that I think he has overlooked,
(03:53):
although I think in the last maybeten twenty years, more people have
appreciated his songwriting genius, his creativegene genius. It was actually the Pet
Sounds album that inspired the Beatles tomake Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,
which is kind of general regardless, the most innovative and you know, groundbreaking
(04:14):
album It's time. But a lotof the stuff the Beatles did was actually
predated by the Beach Boys, butBrian Wilson in particular, I mean,
in a lot of ways, that'salmost a solo album by Brian Wilson in
the sense that he wrote all thesongs pretty much. He came up with
the arrangements and the instrumentation. Nowhe had a lot of session musicians and
(04:39):
freelances they brought in to add stringsand other instruments, and then it was
basically, I think, if Ihave the story right, I mean,
it was Brian and the other guysand the Beach Boys basically just did vocals
for that album and then Brian juststitched everything else together in the studio and
was just he was kind of amadman. He had mental issues from from
(05:01):
probably pretty early on in his lifebecause he had a rather abusive father.
Not so much physically, although therewas some of that, but more mentally
and verbally and things like that. And so at one point Brian Wilson actually
stopped touring with the Beach Boys becausehis anxiety got so bad he couldn't fly.
And that's kind of what led tothe Pet Sounds album because the rest
(05:28):
of the Beach Boys were off touringand Brian Wilson had all this time on
his hands to put together this brilliantmasterpiece of an album that maybe his brothers
didn't always quite understand what he wasgoing at, but the finished product was
pretty amazing, and the Beach Boysand Brian Wilson particular just created a lot
of not only incredible incredible music youlook back, I mean the songs like
(05:53):
fun fun, fun, surfan Safaristuff like that, you know about the
whole teenage SoCal lifestyle. Those arejust great songs on the surf right energy.
But the Pet Sound stuff and someof the stuff that came later was
genuinely groundbreaking material. So shout outto to Brian Wilson. And I think
if I got this right, maybeI should have looked this up to but
(06:14):
I won't bother Brian Wilson eighty onetoday. I think Paul McCartney from the
beatlesh You might have heard of him. His name has come up in conversation.
Yeah, yeah, I believe heturned eighty one on Sunday, So
Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney too.The geniuses of rock and roll. The
question is who was born on mornDay? Yeah, we gotta find we
(06:39):
gotta find somebody who had a greatrock and roll artist, who an incredible
genius right between. Absolutely, Yeah, But that's that's weird to think that
their birthdays are two days apart.I think it's pretty cool. I think
it's pretty cool too. Speaking onbirthdays. Yeah, birthday club, let's
let's start wide open the Hivey BirthdayClub. Two three two fourteen thirty is
(07:01):
the number of call if you orsomebody you know has a birthday today and
would be interested in winning a freebirthday cake or a balloon bouquet from the
Games High Vees five one five twothree two fourteen thirty. Let us know
who has a birthday here on Junetwentieth, twenty twenty three. This is
Newstalk fourteen thirty k SI six twentyfive on Newstalk fourteen thirty. Kasi,
(07:24):
I believe if I have my scheduleright, Mel will be in the rest
of the week to do his owndarn show. But we got, you
know, we got a holiday showin week. We observed Juneteenth yesterday,
speaking of which I spent a littlebit of time, not a lot,
at the bench Hell Park on Saturdayfor at least a kickoff of the Juneteenth
(07:47):
celebration. I just I didn't reallyplan. I don't plan anything, so
but I hadn't been down to themain Street farmers Market this year yet,
so I wanted to hit that.So I just you know, I kind
of rolled out of bed, butwent buy my business, said oh go
downtown, wander around, check itout, and like me, you know
(08:09):
when when, of course, youlived three blocks away from here and the
radio stations studios are unmine. Soyou know, some morning, some Saturday
mornings, I get a cup ofcoffee and put on my slippers and walk
through Bluck South and that's me shufflingdown up and down the main street.
They're kind of a cup of coffeein my pajamas. They're like crazy,
(08:31):
man, I mean, I don'tever do that. Um, yeah,
and I think I'm a sucker forbarbecue, as we've discussed before. And
like literally the first place I comealong on the on main street here right
on this end, near near ourbuilding in fact um, is a barbecue
stand. And though I had hadbreakfast at home merely like two hours before
(08:56):
and it was not near time toeat again, one smell that barbecue and
I was I was it done for? Yeah? So I had a little
little pulled pork as a mid morningsnack. I guess, I don't know
brunch, Yeah, yeah, exactly, but it was pulled pork brunch,
but they had I didn't get it. They also had breakfast bowls. You
(09:20):
could get pulled pork or breasket ordoing meat mixed with potatoes and frieda eggs,
which sounds delicious, but actually I'dalready had Frida eggs, so I
wasn't in the mood for more. But anyway, it was. It was
very good um and I wish Icould remember the name of the guys who
were running the stand, but Ican't. My apologies. UM had a
(09:41):
little live musical. They usually havea little live music going on down there
tom Evans Park and Hum so I'msitting there, you know, bopping my
head, listening to the tunes, eating my barbecue. And then yeah,
I wandered about the rest of theuh the farmer's market, and I say,
you know what, you know whatI need to do. You know
(10:01):
where I haven't been in a while. Where's the library. Yeah, it's
literally been I can't even remember.I mean it's been years since I set
foot in the Names public library, which is a shame. And and that's
the point I realized, Oh,also, I need a library card.
I don't have one of those.So I got me a library card.
(10:22):
Like no, no, no,no, no, no bribes or fees
necessary, but yeah, exactly no, I'm I got so I got that
tinger And they have a little bookstorein there. They sell these books for
really cheap, really cheap. It'sit's really actually pretty remarkable. Yeah.
Yeah, um, so I bought. I actually bought a couple of books
(10:45):
that just struck me as well, this will make a good friend good a
good gift for this friend, Thiswill make a good gift for for this
other friend. And I so,I caught it, bought a couple books
and then I, um, theyhad a copy a DV or Blueberry copy
of everything everywhere all at once. It's a really good movie that won Best
Picture. Yeah, in a movieI liked a lot. And it was
three three bucks, three dollars, three dollars, So I said, yeah,
(11:07):
I'll get that. That's my giftto myself today. Wow. And
then I went over to the AimsHistory Museum. How was it? Because
I remembered they were doing a groundbreakingfor their expansion. They're remodeling the pantorium
and uh and all that, sothey had a little uh grand opening.
But they also had perhaps the threegreatest words in the English language free free
(11:31):
ice creamer Oh, free ice cream. That's trying to get free to work
on both pizza and beer. Youknow that's up there. Yeah, yeah,
beer and pizza. That's that's justone word. Actually, no free
ice creat at the groundbreaking. SoI watched them do the groundbreaking, enjoyed
a little ice cream there, andthen I wandered down to Benchell Park just
(11:52):
for the kickoff and and listen tothe proclamation. And they had a live
band down. They're playing some sometunes and I was sitting there bopping along
with music over there as well. Not a lot of turnout at that point
because it was just the start ofthe Juneteenth celebration there. But there was
a lot of vendors on hand.I guess, say, there's some local
churches. He had City of Amesdepartments to saw police and fire department there.
(12:16):
The library bookmobile was down there,so I couldn't I couldn't get away
from the library, I guess. But all at all, I mean in
just a few hours there, evenless than that, probably I packed at
a little bit of a day.Yeah, and I got some barbecue and
some ice cream off, so nocomplaints. Well, I'll wait, did
that run you in the morning?I think I packed it in just before
(12:37):
one o'clock. That was well done, sir, I was. I was
starting to get warm. Yeah,I was like it out here, I
want to go home. Oh good. I guess I'm a bit of a
whimp with the heat anyway, Butthat that was my Saturday. You got
enjoyable weekend, Yes I did.I was just thinking though on your on
your weekend there though, your SaturdaySaturday events. That is a lot to
(13:00):
get in before one in the afternoon. Yeah, but it's all you know,
it was all leisurely. It wasall very leisurely. It was all
you know, and all right herein the general Matretown area. Yeah,
so it'll kind of worked out nice, worked out okay for me? I
mean free ice cream. So anyway, if you have a birthday to share
with us, five one, fivetwo three two, fourteen thirty is the
number two call, we'll give awaya free birthday cake or balloon bouquet later
(13:24):
this morning. Meanwhile, six thirtyone time for news on Newstalk fourteen thirty
k SI six forty two on aTuesday morning here on Newstalk fourteen thirty k
a s. I shipping up tobe warm one, uh, a little,
a little bit on the I'm morethan a little bit. It'll be
quite sunny throughout the day. It'llbe a very nice day and a very
good day to recognize National Hike witha Geek Day. That's today, Scott,
(13:52):
I don't know if you are awareof that. I didn't know.
Yeah, well now you're aware. Now you can't use ignorance as an excuse
National Hike with a Geek Day.Does that mean I have to come out
from behind my computer screen and gofor a walk. I think that's the
idea basically, yes, the uh, the National Hike with a Geek Day
summons the techi's geeks, it gurusand gamers to push away from the keyboard
(14:15):
and strike out across the inviting landscapesof nature with someone hike with. I
guess you don't have to do itby yourself. Yeah you do, well,
you don't have to all just can'tas surely want. But anyway,
Uh, if you, I'm gonnahead out and take a hike somewhere.
I guess this is the time todo it. Um if you even if
(14:37):
you want to, you know, learn more about National Hike with a Geek
Day visit Hiking with geeks dot com. There, yes, there is a
website. How did they get that? U RL? What happens if I
get lost on the website and forgetto go for a wike. Oh,
we'll see. There's a double edgedsword, y checking into the informational too
(15:01):
much and then oops, lost theopportunity to go first roll. And of
course you're invited to use the hashtaghike with a Geek Day to share your
adventure on social media, because what'sthe point of being the geek who's out
of hike unless you're sharing it,about it or Instagram or whatever you do
(15:22):
whatever. The The National Hike witha Geek Day apparently was founded by Hiking
with Geeks. The people behind saidwebsite now to give friends with geeks an
opportunity to entice them outdoors into thefresh air, where journeys, human interactions,
(15:45):
and exploration take place outside the virtualworld. Hiking with Geeks was founded
in twenty sixteen. Twenty sixteen.Yeah, so for a little while,
I want to go hiking with ageek. Today's day to do it?
Or if you are a geek,I don't know, do you consider yourself
(16:06):
a geek? You know? Ifeel like I'm somewhere in between. You
know, I think we're all geekand what what's the other end of that?
I don't know, what is somethingother than geek? Yeah, the
opposite of geek, I don't know, cool jack or keig. No,
that's the no, that's the backwardsNo. No, okay, all right
(16:30):
that uh yeah, um, we'reall see that's the thing. We're all
geeks about something. There's something weare obsessed with or you know that we
take maybe a little too seriously, release very seriously, Like I'm geek about
sports, right, That's why I'mthe sports director. That's I watch way
too much sports, probably know toomuch about sports because I didn't like sports.
(16:56):
Yeah, something would be wrong ifI didn't spend so much time being
consumed by sports. Maybe I'd actuallydo something productive with my life. Who
knows it's possible, But I'm fearingI'm a geek about sports, which also
I guess similarly tother an it geekor just you know whatever, also kind
(17:18):
of keeps me glued to a screenbecause I'm either you know, I'm online
reading about sports or watching sports orwhat have you. And that can you
know, you get obsessive like Iam. Sometimes that hem you indoors.
So that's why I try to balanceit out with you know, farmers markets
(17:38):
and free ice cream and in thiswebsite or just go to this website.
Also, today, which is Junetwentieth, in case you're not aware,
is National Vanilla Milkshake Day. Nowthat one that's very easy to celebrate,
that is, except it would beeasier to celebrate chocolate or straw bearing.
(18:00):
Vanilla's not my theavory win win winnerchocolate shake's coming up. I don't know.
We'll have to keep our yeah, you'll have to google that itself.
Um, did you know the termmilkshake dates back to eighteen eighty five?
I did not know that. Um. The concoction of cream, eggs and
(18:21):
whiskey was often served with other alcoholictonics, such as lemonades and soda waters
Man. They watered that down overthe years. By nineteen, milkshake often
referred to wholesome drinks made with chocolate, strawberry, or vanilla syrups. I
knew the twentieth century got it wrong. Yeah, all right, Well that's
maybe a little bit extreme. Ifyou if you would like to observe National
(18:42):
Vanilla Milkshake Day, Uh, justtip, go enjoy vanilla milkshake. That's
that's my tip for you. Youknow, everybody needs instructions. I would
probably uh pour a bunch of likechocolate syrup into there, because I'm with
you. Vanilla milkshake a little boringplane. I will toast that vanilla milkshake
(19:06):
with my chocolate milkshakee just you know. I mean, let's be clear,
vanilla milkshake better than no milkshake atall. We can agree on that much.
But chocolate milkshake, Yeah, I'min for that. One today is
also National American Eagle Day. Wow, it makes you more proud to me
an American than seeing eagle. Youknow what I saw that was just kind
(19:30):
of blew me away. I triedjust shared on on Instagram and I plugged
something up, but I didn't havetime to like post the video again.
Repost this video. Reposting videos onInstagram is a real pain in the butt.
If you haven't noticed, you needlike an outside app and everything to
steal the video from there so youcan post it again. And it's confusing.
(19:51):
Anyway, there was this video ofan eagle, bald eagle rocketing down.
This is all in slow motion,so you see these glorious wings flapping,
comes down to the river, splashes, you know, its talons into
the river, and then it startsto fly away, and I thought,
man, it just missed whatever itwas going for. But no, there
was a fish. There was afish flopping around and its talents. It
(20:12):
reaches down with its beak and thenliterally takes little fish and gobbles it up
in slow motion as it's taking off. Pretty wild and that was incredible.
It's beautiful. Yeah, hey,it was. It was proceeding today.
Have you have you seen an eaglein person that only a distance. Yeah,
I guess the only eagle I wouldreadily recognize would be the bald eagle
(20:36):
right there. But there are othertypes of eagles that maybe I have seen
but wouldn't recognize so much. Butwell, and you have seen bald eagles.
Yeah, bald eagle is very easyto point out, very easy to
identify. But there are other reallyincredible birds out there that I just don't
know how to identify, and sonot much use when it comes to that.
When I see a bald eagle,I know it when I see it.
Yeah, it's pretty unmistakable. Also, by the way, today,
(21:00):
I don't know if this goes alongwith National Vanilla Melkshake Day. Today's National
ice cream Soda Day, so itseems one day. Yeah, well that
might be true. I guess ifyou're into like, uh, what is
it called up floats? Yeah, she said, can't can't be you.
I forgot that, don't forget anyway. Anyway, I think that qualifies as
(21:26):
a cream soda day. Ice creamsoda, I don't know, that's just
me crea or okay, Yeah,National ice Cream Soda Day is today.
According to doctor mister Robert McKay Green. He created the beverage in eighteen seventy
four in Philadelphia when he ran outof ice for his shaved ice streets.
(21:48):
Once he began substituting ice cream,he had a hit on his hands.
Green even included in his will thathis gravestone read, here lies the originator
of ice cream soda. Yeah,he was proud of that. He's gonna
go ahead and take credit for thatone. So there you go. Now,
who doesn't love a good root beerfloat right through ice cream? And
(22:11):
do you do enjoy any other varietiesof ice cream soda, like a Coca
Cola float or some other kind ofOh yeah, you can do Coca Coca
Cola. You can do Doctor Pepper, and you can mix up the flavor
of the ice cream doesn't have tobe vanilla. I can so crazy out
there once you open your mind tothe possibilities, you know. Yeah,
well, yeah you can. Youcan make all sorts of things. I
(22:33):
need to try. I don't knowif I've ever had the Doctor Pepper and
ice cream float whatever soda. Um, I've had the Doctor Pepper and cream
soda flavored soda, but I haveI've never mixed Yeah, obviously I've never
mixed the Doctor Pepper with ice cream, at least not that I can remember.
And I do like me some DoctorPepper, you are aware, so
(22:53):
I might have to try that, you know, just to celebrate National ice
Cream Sodaday. While I'm out hikingwith a geek and enjoying a Villa Vanilla
ice vanilla milkshake, I should say, how's that all sound works for me?
Slap all these things altogether? Sixfifty two. On June twentieth,
We're News Talk fourteen thirty k SIsix fifty five on News Talk fourteen thirty
(23:18):
k A s I Dave along withScott here filling in for mel in the
morning. I don't know if hetook in a movie over the weekend.
The number one film at the boxoffice was The Flash, the new latest
DC superhero Flick took in fifty fivemillion dollars in his first three days in
North America. That'd be Friday,Saturday, and Sunday. So I don't
(23:40):
know about yesterday, there, whatever, But fifty five million dollars this is
a pretty healthy chunk of change, right, It's a good, good amount.
It's about half of what your typicalMarvel movie opens at that's it.
Yeah, they see there's different standardshere for for everything. You know,
big blockbuster movies typically will open aboutone hundred mill million dollars on their debut
(24:00):
weekend. But the Flash did notget there. How do you imagine that
that must feel? I mean likeif you were an individual, right,
it's like, uh, it camein below expectations. You only earned fifty
five million dollars. Yeah, Imean it's like, wow, there's a
lot. I mean, I guesspart of it has to do with margin,
(24:21):
right, I mean, how dowe know how much it costs to
make that thing? I don't know. I think it's well two hundred million
apparently from what I I don't knowhow much of that went to Michael Keaton,
you know, lure him back toplay Batman again. But that's Oh
is that spoiler? It's only anevery every trailer for the movie. Anyway.
Going into the weekend, analysts expectedThe Flash to earn at least seventy
(24:44):
million dollars in its first three days. Uh. Internationally, it made seventy
five million dollars, giving it aone hundred thirty nine million dollars global starts
they're gonna make their money back money. It's pretty pretty clear. That's a
big reason. I mean, notonly do these comic book movies do really
well in the US, but theydo well very well internationally. Um.
(25:06):
The number two movie at the boxoffice during the weekend was latest Pixar release,
Elemental. It took in twenty nineand a half million dollars in its
first three days, worst opening weekendfor a Pixar movie ever. But yeah,
I know, how much was thatagain? Twenty nine and a half
million dollars and that's the lowest Pixaropening. Yeah, that's that's I think.
(25:33):
I haven't seen, you know,a whole lot of Pixar movies lately,
but it seems to me from whatI've seen, they're kind of recycling
plots and various elements of this.I mean, this Elemental movie, it
looks a lot like Inside Out,which I mean kind of it's kind of
(25:53):
the same. I don't know, that's just me. Anyway, We're gonna
step aside. We've got the latestnews coming up in momentation coming here right
next. David Scott filling in formel in the morning on a Tuesday.
This is News talking fourteen thirty ks I News Talk fourteen thirty k A
s I Dave Sprout alongside Stack.Yeah, I forgot your name there,
(26:18):
that's all right. You know,I'm I'm a little board operator here.
Who needs to remember my name? You're just some guy, No big deal,
No big deal. Anyway, Howwas your weekend? I talked a
lot about my weekend. Yeah,I know about your weekend. Well,
(26:41):
you know, this is something thatkind of stood out to me and it
has really has nothing to do withme whatsoever. Um, but that whole
bit about the submarine, that littlesubmersible that went down, and it's like
missing after you know, the titannot seeing that Titanic, or or not
being found after it's visiting the Titanic. What what is all that about?
(27:04):
I mean, that's a lot.That's a question a lot of people are
asking right now, right. Yeah. And the thing you know, you
hear most recently here is that,uh, it's not a cheap trip either,
right. No. Um, Iwas actually coming through a story of
this morning, just trying to findout more about it myself. And according
to CBS News, um, thesubmersible is named titan It's owned by an
(27:29):
outfit called ocean Gate exped Expeditions UM, and their whole idea here is there.
You get people on this submersible andgo down to uh the Titanic wreckage
site and just check it out.I guess um. The five person crew
(27:49):
on the titan UM took off forthe Titanic site on Sunday morning and lost
contact with about or about an hourforty five minutes later, the sub was
lost in the area nine hundred mileseast of Cape Cod with water at a
(28:12):
depth of about thirteen thousand feet. The Coast Guard official says the people aboard
included an operator and four mission specialists, including Hamish Harding, a British billionaire
an adventure traveler. No kidding,we still got them. That that's according
to the people who UH around oceanGate Expeditions. The Coast Guard does not
(28:34):
confirmed that. But seriously, thisguy what was his name again, Hamish
Harding? Does? He's a Britishbillionaire and adventure traveler. How those guys
are still around? I thought theyleft, like in the eighteen hundred.
Yeah, I didn't realize you couldstill get that title. My life's ambitions
have been misaligned. Um. Thethe cause of this situation, I guess
(29:00):
hasn't been determined. The US CoastCard is using a C one thirty aircraft
to try to search for the sub, and Rescue Coordination Center in Halifax,
Nova Scotia is assisting with a Peight Poseidon aircraft, which has underwater detection
capabilities. Sonar boys have been deployedin the water an attempt to listen for
(29:21):
the missing sub. Those sonar boysare capable of listening to a depth of
thirteen thousand feet. The little thelittle let's you know, compared to like
a naval submarine. It's small,but it's not a small structure by any
(29:41):
sense. Uh, it's bigger thanyour car, for sure. It's it's
definitely bigger. Define the submersible aircraft. The titan is owned by ocean Gate
Expeditions, a company that deploys Mannasubmarines for deep sea exploration and has in
the past advised this particular subs oradvertised this particular subs endeavor to carry tourists
(30:03):
down to the wreckage of the RMSTitanic four. How much you want to
take a guess, this is whatI saw and just blew me away.
Oh so you know, the number. Yeah, two hundred fifty thousand dollars,
quarter million dollars to go down andpoke around with the Titanic for what
about half an hour? Why thisBritish billionaire dude? Yeah, it's on
there. The Oceangate website and socialmedia recently said that it's expedition of the
(30:30):
Titanic wreckage is underway, describing theseven night trip as a chance to step
outside of everyday life and discover somethingtruly extraordinary. Sure. In a statement,
Oceangate confirmed the missing submarine is THEIRSand that a rescue operation has been
launched to find and recover it.The sub has emergency oxygen and a ninety
six hours sustainment capability if there's anemergency on board. As of yesterday afternoon,
(30:57):
the coast Guard says that they haveto be somewhere between seventy to the
full ninety six hours available at thispoint. So Younger's crossed. Everybody's still
o kay down there, and theystill have plenty of oxygen. I found
an earlier report by CBS, andit was last November November twenty twenty two.
(31:19):
They had a story on the CBSSunday Morning program which might dad watched
it religiously, but anyway, theyhad one of their their correspondence, David
Polk, actually try to take atrip on this submersible and surprise surprises didn't
work out. They departed from SaintJohn's Newfoundland, the easternmost tip of North
(31:48):
America, about four hundred miles fromthe Titanic light site, aboard a chartered
oil rigs servicing ship. During thetwo day journey in the North Atlantic.
They had I guess a handful ofother people on this ship to hang out.
An Indian ministry, mogul bank executive, people you know with money,
(32:12):
bank executive for not a Rojas hasbeen saving to see the Titanic for thirty
years. Dreams don't have a price, you said. Some people want a
ferrari. Some people want to buya house. I want to go to
the Titanic. Might want to reassessyour priorities. I'll take the ferrari,
Yeah, exactly. The star ofthe show is the titan custom built submersible
made a five inch thick carbon fibercapped on each end by a dome of
(32:37):
titanium. If all went well, the poor respondent rights, I would be
spending about twelve hours seal inside ona dive to the Titanic, but the
weather conditions did not allow for that. As it as it turned out,
I know, the submersible the titanhas one button. One in total of
(33:00):
one button. It is make sureyou're pointed in the right direction. Yeah.
It's supposedly the only five person stubin the world that can reach the
depth of the Titanic records almost twoand a half miles below the sea.
Piloting the craft is run with avideo game controller, like like a PlayStation
(33:23):
inside the submersible. No way,I'm not even kidding you. I don't
know. Maybe it's like your car. You just press the button to start
the engine and then the controller andit resets the thing. Yeah, I
don't know. That's probably what happened. It's just they just need to like
unplug, plug in the controller, reset it again. Yeah, someone didn't
(33:45):
tell them about it. Holding downthe button and that's what I can't figure
out how to turn things off andon again. Going back to the that's
it, Dave, You know that, Yeah, that's probably what it is.
Um. Going back to the storyfrom from November here from CBS UH,
the expedition man, you're studied theforecast for the planned dive and conclude
the waves would be too big tolaunch the sub so they would have to
(34:07):
wait. So they were offered aconsolation dive to the continental shelf eighty miles
away. But I don't think thatworked out either them. The dive in
the Ocean Gate submersible had made itto only thirty seven feet when floats came
(34:28):
off the platform. That's not supposedto happen. Yeah, this might have
been a horning sign. This isback in November by them, might have
been a heads up to say, maybe don't put this, you know,
don't jump in the submersible that's madeof chicken wire and duct tape and uses
(34:51):
a PlayStation controller to go down, you know, thirteen thousand feet under the
ocean and try to look at theTitanic. I'm not sure I quite understand
the obsession with the fascination with theTitanic. I mean, I get it's
very famous, sinking and all thatand everything that went down on it,
(35:13):
but not to the degree that Iwant to say, oh yeah, I
want to go down there with mysubmersible. And I think I suppose I
should look this up. I neverused my submersible for things like that,
Dad. I think at one pointdirector James Cameron, famous for making the
movie Titanic, actually had a watercraftor piloted a watercraft that actually went down
(35:39):
there. But if I remember right, it wasn't a manned watercraft. It
was controlled from else remotely, Iguess, And but it had video cameras
and lights on it, and youused it to actually look at the wreckage
of the Titanic. I think thathappened after the movie was made. All
that, but that's probably the betterway to go. Use the unmanned watercraft
(36:00):
submersible and not the one that holdslike five people on it who could potentially
and in fact currently are stuck wellunderneath the ocean and waiting for hopefully they
are still waiting for the coastguard tocome. In the worst case alternative that
people who don't know how to powercycle on Xbox Apparently I don't know.
(36:22):
I, even if I had paidmy two hundred and fifty thousand dollars,
got into the submersible and said, okay, I'm ready to go. As
soon as I saw the pilot orwhoever pull out the video game controller I'm
out keep my two fifty. I'mdone. I'm not. I am not
(36:43):
doing that. I mean, wouldyou if you got into a car and
the driver, you know, yougot an uber or something, and the
drivers using his PlayStation controller to drivejust a car. Yeah, no,
you're not. I'm not doing that. I'd probably introduced induced myself to him
(37:04):
as Elon Musk, because that's that'sthe only place where that sort of thing
makes sense, you know, inthe car and like a game controller.
It's got to be something to dowith yeah, with Tesla or Musk or
some but you know, obviously hope, hope for the best for all the
folks on that submersible who are trappedbeneath the ocean. Yeah. Oh,
(37:25):
we joke about it, but thatis serious. It's pretty intense. Yes,
it is the best of luck tothe Coastguard folks from the US and
Canada who are out there trying totrying to help. Seven twenty four The
Birthday Club on a happier note isopen presented by HIV. If you want

week. Maybe you can help mewith this, just to make sure I
(38:10):
got this right. Uh, breakfastclub this Friday, it's over at AIMES
Electric Services. Yes, point yourright direction. You're pointing the right direction
for electric services. That would disappointboth the directions. Actually it'll actually yeah,
down at the other end of MainStreet from us, right. This
is you know for everyone listening inon stereo. It's the right channel direction
(38:36):
anyway. Uh Yeah, Aimes ElectricServices over there by Banchell Park and the
rest. And that's where Mel willbe for this week's breakfast club. If
you want to stop by to promotea local organization, a nonprofit group or
fundraiser or other events, feel freeto drop by and say hi to Mel
and get your story in the here. I don't know if maybe anyone from
uh Nevada is listening and involved inthe restoration of a a downtown movie theater.
(39:05):
But I would love I'd love tohear more about this. I saw
this article in the Ames Tribune acouple of days ago about the Camelot Theater
in downtown Nevada. It's undergoing arenovation and when it's completed, they'll have
a new bistro, rooftop bar, upstairs apartments. Uh. This place,
the theater, the building dates backto nineteen twenty eight, ninety five years
(39:30):
ago about that and so there they'vebeen having events, live music, uh,
showing classic film screenings in this theateras they do renovations. Uh.
And I gotta get over there andcheck this out. I love, you
know, historic building of al varieties. Now I have a pensant for let's
(39:52):
say historic sports venues, and somesports guy your Wrigley Field. Right,
it's just gonna say, you gotyou gotta visit the Friendly Con. I've
been there a few times. Yeah, And uh, you know you don't
find too many of these like oldschool movie palaces anymore. This is this
sounds like the kind of place youwould call a palace. I think I've
(40:13):
talked about it before. The theUS Bank building next door to us.
Yeah, actually used to be amovie theater. And I don't know.
There's a big old palace. Butif you look, if you look at
it, you can kind of tell, you can say, you know what,
you can see it. But theover at the Camelot in Nevada,
they are doing work that includes paintremoval, um, they're doing waterproofing,
(40:39):
window restoration. In the future they'llbe adding a b stroke kitchen at new
restrooms and theater lobby renovations. Thoseare expected to start next year. When
finished, the theater transformation will providetwo upper story apartments, a restaurant,
and a venue for cultural, businessand social gatherings and most importantly, you
know, movies. The building, the cat what is now known as a
(41:05):
Camelot Theater, was opened in nineteentwenty eight as the Circle Theater. It
was changed to the Camelot after extensiverenovations in nineteen sixty nine. In twenty
twenty, city and community stakeholders identifiedthe need for rehabilitation and preservation, which
spawned the Camelot Theater Foundation, whichnow owns the building and actually is someone
(41:28):
who had owned the adjoining building whichwas home went home to a barbershop.
Donated that building also to the CamelotTheater Foundation, so that's part of the
whole project. Earlier this year theyhad a clean up day that was in
March to remove junk from the upperapartment in basement. They had a bunch
of volunteers like the Rotary, Jac'sKuanas and the Nevada High School football team.
(41:50):
Where to go, guys, goodjob getting out there. So they
are still open, They're still holdingevents. They have an open mic knife
So I know you've been working onyour your tight five, your your stand
up routine, Scott. So ifyou want to you when you're ready to
debut, head to the open micnight at the Camelot the last Thursday of
the month in June, July, and August. All ages and talent levels
(42:13):
are welcome to perform. I thinkthat includes you. Then I'm there there
on out of excuses. First showis seven o'clock Thursday, June twenty ninth,
seven in the evening and the admissionis free. You can buy concessions
while you're there. They're also showingUm this week, multiple screenings of this
new documentary about Ragbye. It's calledShift and a couple of register employees put
(42:38):
together this h Ragbye documentary. Thisyear, as you might have heard,
is the fiftieth anniversary Ragbye event. And you know you might have heard it's
also stopping the names. It isstopping anyway. So they're they're gonna show
that at the Camelot Theater. Let'ssee Thursday, Friday, Saturday night,
(43:01):
and Sunday afternoon. Tickets are eightbucks proceeds supporting the Camelot Theater Foundation.
And they're also so they are alsoshowing some classic movies at the Camelot in
the near future, and so ClassicMovie Sundays are being held once a month,
but in December you get a bonus. So the lineup coming up July
(43:24):
ninth, et August twentieth, Backto the Future, September tenth, Mama
Mia. Yeah, yeah, Ican see that. October twenty second,
Psycho. I presume this year original, not the remake. November twelfth,
Grumpy Old Men, December third,It's a Wonderful Life, oh of course,
and December tenth, the Polar Express. Now here's here's one that really
(43:47):
got my interest. July fourteenth,So among the live music events. They're
having a Camelot This is all whereit comes back to Dave. Oh,
back to Dave all right. Julyfourteen, fourteenth Elvis tribute ursists Joseph Hall.
Oh no, no it's not. It's not Elvis impersonator. Now listen,
(44:12):
let's get this straight. It's Elvistribute artist. Oh yeah, get
it, there's a difference. Uh. He's also Joseph Hall is going to
perform on December first. It's comingback to the Nevada Camelot. Yeah,
the Camelot Theater in Nevada for aChristmas show in December first. They also
have some other Iowa bands doing performances. They're uh coming up in in Nevada,
(44:36):
and they have a the or youcheck out. They got a Facebook
page, the Camelot Theater Foundation. They have a website Camelot Theater Foundation dot
org if you want to know more. I think it's really cool. I'm
hoping to get out to see oneof their I'd like to see both the
movie at least one movie, andand I gotta see the Elvis guy,
right, so I might have tocheck that. You might see me at
(44:57):
the Camelot quite a bit. Actually, that's it's pretty awesome to pervert.
Might stand up and you might bethe guy throwing tomatoes. That now,
that's a good idea. I'll besure to stop by the grocery store on
my way and pick up yeah, some some overripe tomatoes. Boom, Scott,
you're terrible. Get off this stage. It's seven thirty four A new
stalk fourteen thirty KSI new Stalk fourteenthirty k s I helps turn the microphone
(45:22):
on. This is a radio station, so you gotta do that. Hi,
uh Dave here, Scott is thereand we don't have anyone on the
phone for Freshman. It's yet notyet. Yeah, all right, So
as we await the call from thenews policepartment will remind you that Rushman,
it's brought to you by Mary GreeleyMedical Center where they do what's right now.
(45:44):
Hopefully they're not dealing with any seriouscrashes distracting them from their duties and
responsibilities to call into the radio stationthis morning. UM I would be very
very interested to know or talk toany um any law enforcement officials involved in
a situation like what was experienced inProvo, Utah the other day. What
(46:05):
was this is on Sunday. Well, you know, multiple lanes in both
directions of I fifteen in Provo wereclosed temporarily Sunday due to a semi truck
crash. Utah Highway Patrol officials saythe semi trailer overturned near fourteen sixty north.
You know where that anyway? Absolutely, yeah, and there are many
times. Yeah, the driver onlyminor injury of traffic. Cameras from the
(46:29):
Utah Department Transportation show the records tothe trailer wrapped around a light pole in
the freeway. Median debris from thetrailer was also seen scattered along both sides
of the Freeway's pretty standard stuff,so I could tell by the way you
were telling me that you were tryingto say, this is ordinary. It's
just regular, average, everyday stuff. Yeah, here comes the curveballs.
The truck was hauling a load ofFrench fries. Wow, that's right,
(46:52):
you heard me, French fried Frenchfried potatoes. Patrol troopers and fire and
blocked off the four leftmost lanes onthe south side, as well as two
northbound lanes, and then used askid loader to shovel the spilled fries off
the northbound lane. Um then theypiled them up and hauled them away.
(47:15):
Uh. I just I would loveto be able to give you that traffic
report in the morning and tell uh, tell our listeners avoid this area.
There's a French fry pile up blockinguh the lanes. We got we got
somebody on the line, Scott,we do. We have Sherry Plaguey from
(47:36):
the city. Sherry's do up inthe next segment. That's that's gonna say.
She's she's on hold and I'm sureshe'll be happy to talk to us.
But no, unfortunately, we haveno officers, no update. I
don't know. Maybe maybe they founda big pile of French fries on the
road somewhere and decided to stop andclean them up. It's possible. I
I would imagine these were not cookedFrench fries. I mean, if they're
(47:58):
in the truck, that means they'reon their way somewhere to be cooked.
Right. That's not nearly his tasty, not not quite the same. H
And yeah, probably after they've beenon the freeway. Um, you don't
want to not even gonna fry himat that, Yeah, you probably just
you gotta toss him and gotta tosshim. And I was like, looking
at the video. It's on theFox thirteen uh now dot com out of
(48:21):
Salt Lake City. They got thevideo of the traffic camera, and I
mean, there's spuds everywhere, buddy. It's just it's all over the place.
And I can't quite tell though, whether these are like shoestring fries,
uh if they're um, maybe steakfries. Uh. They're just just boxes
and boxes of French fries. Notjust French fries that are like dumped into
(48:45):
the back of a semi They're they'rein boxes and the boxes came out and
the boxes open up. The Frenchfries just went flying everywhere. Lieut,
let's let's do that. Heath droppedfrom the aims at police apartment. Good
morning, Heath, how are you? Good morning? I'm sorry, I
am late. I this is myfirst day, the first day back from
(49:05):
vacation. It is no excuse, but boy is it hard to get back
in this thing of things. Thiswas like the first time I actually wasn't
ready to come home. I couldhave stayed on vacation in another week,
couldn't we all? Anyway? Yeah, well, we're glad. You're glad,
you're you're eventually remembered and it isto call in and do you have
any traffic updates for us? Trafficis looking good all over the county.
(49:29):
UM, nothing really to report,um anywhere out there, knock on wood.
UM, some calls that are startingto come in. We're starting to
see are the fireworks calls? Ohyeah, So I'm assuming everybody has seen
the tense pop up around town. But I just wanted to send a reminder
because we're getting these calls that theydo affect people. Um. We're having
(49:50):
some people with some PTSD call into make complaints, some other people with
pets or children that are trying tosleep. UM. Just so you know,
there's not legal to shoot off inaimes ever, even around the fourth
of July or New Year's But sojust keep that in mind. You can't
shoot him off out in the countyif you have permission from people that own
(50:12):
the land or you own the land. But no times with illegal in names.
So just be aware of and consciouslyof your neighbors and what they might
be feeling. All right, that'sa good tip. I've heard those going
off as well, and if Ihad any idea where they are coming from,
I'd let you know, but Ireally don't have a good sense of
what directions to give you guys, but we do appreciate the vigilance of the
(50:37):
Amsley Spartment helping out folks who aredisturbed by those by those fireworks going off.
And we're glad that traffic is movingsmoothly this morning. He thank you
so much for calling in, youbet, I'll talk to you tomorrow,
you bet. Lieutenant Heath Rob fromthe Ameshley Apartment with our Rushmans Report this
morning, and that's presented by MaryGreeley Medical Center on Newstalk fourteen thirty k
A, s I seven fifty threeon Newstalk fourteen thirty ks HI. And
(51:00):
we're now joined by City Assessor SherryLeagy. Sherry, good morning to you,
good morning, glad to have youalong. And we want to remind
our friends here of listeners who livein Aims that we've got some deadlines coming
up on July first for home taxcredits. What kind of tax credits are
we talking about here? So thereare three different tax credits for people to
(51:24):
sign up for by July first. The first one is the regular homestead tax
credit, which are for people whoare living in their home own their home
and live there at least six monthsout of the year, and that is
for anybody who owns a home andlives there. Okay. Then we have
(51:45):
the new homestead sixty five plus atax exemption, and this is for in
addition to the regular homestead credit,an additional exemption off of your tax bill
for being sixty five or older andalso meeting all the criteria for the regular
homestead Okay. And the third onethat we have people signing up for are
(52:10):
the military exemption. So if youwere in the military and you've been discharged
honorably and you want to sign youhave a piece of ground or a house,
you can sign up for a militaryexemption as well. All right,
Well, that's that's a lot ofvarya to cover. But the deadline of
(52:31):
July first, that doesn't mean you'reout of luck totally. It just has
more to do with the tax code, I take it. Yes, So
part of the code says that youmust live in the home as of July
first each year that you claim thecredit, and at least six months out
of that year, So as longas you are living within the home each
(52:52):
year after you sign up. Thisis a one time sign up unless you
sell or move, then you continueto get this credit. Good to know
and in terms of you know, getting the forms we need or any assistance
with those forms, what's the bestway to to find those resources? So
there are two ways, actually threeways that you can get that form.
(53:15):
Um You can either call or comeinto our office. We are there from
eight to five Monday to Friday. You can go on the State of Iowa
website which is um Iowa state dotIowa, dot gov. Let's see slash
tack there are dot gov slash tack. Or you can go to our website
(53:38):
and look up your property on thebeacons page under property search and you go
to the bottom. After you searchfor your property. There are two buttons
there that you click on the homestadand military and fill those out. They
do need to be printed and sentin. It's not an E file submission
(53:59):
of any kind. That's too bad. Do you have an idea at all,
Sherry, about how much people cansave through these tax credits? So
the regular homestead tax credit is fourthousand, eight hundred and fifty dollars off
of the assess value, which equatesto roughly one hundred and fifty dollars a
year. The homestead sixty five isan additional three thousand, two hundred and
(54:23):
fifty dollars this year, and nextyear it's an additional sixty five hundred,
So the total after next year willbe just over eleven thousand off of your
assess value. It sounds like aworthwhile endeavor to me. Yeah, so
it's going to be probably around threehundred or three hundred and fifty dollars off
for anybody who is sixty five olders. Wow, Well, that's that's good.
(54:49):
That's a good. All right.Once again, we have the homestead
tax credit. Let's run these downfor me because I can't remember them all.
Let's let's get the names out thereone more time, Sherry, regular
homestead tax credit, the homestead sixtyfive plus exemption in the military exemption all
need to be signed up for byJuly first. Excellent. Hey, Cherry,
(55:09):
thanks so much for taking some timewith us. We really appreciate it.
You bet all right. Cherry Plague, the City assessor for the City
of Ames, joining us this morningto remind us to get those applications in
before July first. A reminder toyou to get birthdays in here five one,
five, two, three two fourteenthirties number two. Call you're on
new Stock fourteen thirty k SI pyHIV Birthday Club if you want to add
(55:34):
someone's name or your own even tothe birthday Club list, and that later
rolling out the winner of our threebirthday ka Clove Bloom Buka Fie right here
on new Stock fourteen thirty k As I Newstalk fourteen thirty Kasi's eight fourteen.
On Tuesday morning, Dave Sprouse gotKovac hanging out in studios Morning Fillion
for mel in the mornings, takinga little vacation day today, but he's
(55:57):
in the rest of the week.Four you. Meanwhile, as we typically
do on Tuesday mornings around this time, we're gonna put the spotlight on one
of the partner agencies of Story County, United Way and today representing the local
Salvation Army is William Stott. AndWilliam thank you for stopping in today.
Appreciate it, thank you, thankyou. Happy to be here. And
we were chatting a little earlier, said well, we don't have anything,
(56:20):
you know, specific events or anythinglike that going on, but always there's
a need for the Salvation Army tostep in and help out those who are
in need, and folks here inStory County in the names can step in
and help out the Salvation Army inturn. That's right, you can go
on to the Salvation Army's website toyou know, find ways to donate,
find ways to volunteer. We alwaysneed help at the food pantry. But
(56:42):
as many people probably know, wedo operate a food pantry daily and we
serve probably about I want to say, about six hundred, six hundred individuals
a month and we end up servingabout fourteen hundred food boxes a month.
So there's always needed to help outand volunteer, and also specifically there's also
all in need, especially this timeof year to donate money because the Christmas
(57:02):
season is over and we don't havea lot of whole bunch of extraneous money
that that that we can use tohelp, you know, with uh RANT
or with with our salaries or anythinglike that. So any donations you make
right now will help us on theoperations of the Salvation Army here in Story
County. And you know, youcan't use the food pantry unless unless there's
(57:24):
someone there to help you get thefood. So you know, this helps
pay for for the salaries of thepeople who work at the Salvation Army as
well as supporting those programs that weoffer to the community. And of course
anyone is welcome to volunteer their time, whether it's the food pod pantry or
with the other other areas that's theSalvation Army helps out locally. And we
(57:45):
also do you know, I noticedI mentioned we didn't have anything specific coming
up, but we are uh planningto work with with different area agencies here
around rag Brye to help you know, get the message out about the Salvation
Army. Will be coming up inthe beginning of July. Also, we're
helping with the Rummage Rampage at theend of July, so we're going to
(58:06):
may be down there working with peoplewho are running the rummage rampage to help
get that get people to clean outtheir house and help make a little bit
of money for the local charities aswell. So those are some things we
are planning to do this summer. However, like I said, the need
for donations, even if it's likea you know, fifty twenty twenty five,
you know, whatever you want todrop on the Salvation Army, that
(58:27):
would be very helpful this time ofyear. You know, we're getting towards
the end of the fiscal year andso, uh, you know, these
money issues, they probably affect alot of agencies. In Salvation Army is
just one of them. Now,I would imagine I know a lot of
organizations do this. The Salvation Army. Can you also set up a recurring
donation? You absolutely can, Andyou can set up a donation as well
(58:49):
if you if you happen to knowsomeone that you know you want to memorialize
or anything like that. We alsowill take a donation's immemorial of someone who
really supported the work of the SalvationArmy. But yeah, recurring donations are
a thing. You can do thaton the website as well. It also
gives you instructions for different kinds ofdonation structures that you want to do as
well. There once you get ontothe website, it's it's a Central USA
(59:10):
dot Salvation Army dot org and thenit's backslash aims is the website you can
go onto, and from there youcan you can make donations Salvation Army.
And one of the things that I'venoticed from other organizations, and I'm sure
the Salvation Army is in the sameway of thinking here is that those recurring
donations are great because you can itreally helps with budgeting. You have a
(59:32):
certain you know, kind of baselineexpectation of what kind of donations you can
take in on a monthly basis, instead of relying, as you've indicated,
on the big surge that always comesin around the holidays. Yeah. I
think the public radio will call itum sustaining donations. I don't think we
have a specific name for it likethat, but it's the same exact idea
where the money that you are planningto spend on the whole year for donations
(59:54):
will instead come in by by months. Suit divide whatever you're planning to donate
by twelve and then you know eachmonth somebody will come in. And that's
actually really very helpful when you're budgeting, as you mentioned, to be able
to plan on we're going to havethis amount of money coming in this month,
and so if we sort of runa little low at the end of
(01:00:14):
let the previous month, we knowthat those uh, that those funds will
be refilled at the beginning of themonth. That's very helpful. Uh.
And all of this is electronics soyou can set it up so it comes
right from your bank account. Youdon't have to touch it or do any
extra work. You don't have towrite a check every single month if we'll
set it up so there's an automaticpayment right uh and out of your card.
(01:00:35):
And of course a big partnership foryou source of funding as you of
course our friends at the United Wayof Story County talked about a little a
little bit about that relationship. Well, the United Way of Story County has
been in a great help. Theyhelp us with so many things. One
of the biggest programs that we gethelp with from the United Way is with
Asset that it's a big fund thatthe city and County has put together and
(01:00:58):
United Ways helping a minister and theywill give Asset money out to each of
their partner agencies each year and thosefunds help us fund major programs at the
Salvation Army. We also get differentsources of funding like housing funds or emergency
food funds from the United Way,and all of these funds will help us
(01:01:20):
to fund our programs at the SalvationArmy. And we certainly couldn't do a
lot of what we do without it, because if you take a look at
our budget. There's no way wecould do that just on donations. So
these grants that the United Way hasput down allowed us to apply for and
everything like that, we certainly arevery grateful for their help with all of
our programs and everything. We couldn'tdo it well. And just to make
(01:01:44):
sure that we're all aware and we'reall clear and on the same page here
that the Salvation Army offices or atseven h three East Lincoln A Way,
that's different from the Salvation Army store, that's right. I'd imagine from time
to time they have people who comein and want to volunteer, and I'm
sure they'll take them at the store, but those are kind of separate locations.
Yeah, it's interesting that you mentionedthat people will go down to the
(01:02:05):
Salvation Army store to volunteer. Butwe get calls probably twice or three times
a week where people are calling upsaying, hey, can we drop off
a donation here? And I alwayshave to ask what, saying what kind
of donation are you talking about? Are you talking about food donations which we
will accept, or you know, betting And then almost always it's like,
well, we got some clothes they'regently used. You know, we got
(01:02:27):
some games that we'd like to dropoff, and beds and stuff like that,
betting and stuff like that. Andlet's not to say no, what
you want the Thrift Store. Now, we are associated with with the Thrift
Store in a number of very importantways. And we can also write vouchers
from the Salvation Army Service then, but those are two different sides of the
same organization, and we cannot takeclothing. And at the food pantry we
(01:02:49):
will take food. If you gotfood, we'll take that, but we
can't take clothing there. So I'llusually give them the number to the Thrift
Store and send them that way.And incidentally, if you're cheap like me,
and I'm really cheap, the FamilyStore is a great place to go
do some shopping and find some I'vefound some really cool stuff there from time
to time. There's a lot ofgreat stuff there, a ton of clothes,
as you can imagine. Plus they'vealso got furniture and games and things
(01:03:13):
like that. My recliner and myTV entertainment stand I both got from the
Family Store there, and I can'teven imagine how much more expensive those would
have been at a real store.So I shouldn't say real store, I
should say a regular store. Well, a retail store. We would say,
yeah, yeah, exactly right. All right, Well, you have
anything else you want to touch onbefore we let you go? Sure if
there's listeners out there that need toget into the food pantry. We do
(01:03:37):
take appointments on day to day basis. We're trying to keep it just two
appointments. A lot of people willwalk in and request assistance. We can
sort of do that. We wouldprefer to not do that. We'd prefer
to have you make an appointment. And to make an appointment, all you
have to do is call the numberto the Ovation Army Service Center five one
five two three three three five sixseven. It's five one five two three
(01:03:58):
three three five six seven, andyou can make an appointment to the Salvation
Army's food pantry. We can usuallyget you in that day. If we
can't get you in today, wecan get in tomorrow. We'll just have
you make an appointment and all theappointments basically will come in. We'll let
you select your bread and your produceand everything like that, and then we'll
have your whole food pantry order readyfor you so you can get in and
(01:04:18):
get out really quickly and efficiently. If you walk in, it's going to
be a bit more of a ofa situation. We gotta, you know,
quickly run and make a food boxup or whatever the case may be.
So appointments are best if you're gonnause the food pantry, make sure
you make an appointment, all right, Thank you so much for sum by
William, Thanks to you and foreverything the Salvation Army does well. Thank
(01:04:41):
you for having me. I appreciateit. And a big shout of course
to our friends at the United Waywho helped as a Salvation Army and so
many other agencies here in Story Countyto better enrich our lives. It is
a twenty three you're on new Stockfourteen thirty k s I new Stock fourteen
thirty k s I eight twenty five. And I suppose we should issue one
(01:05:02):
more reminder to call in for thebirthday club. Scott's feeling lonely because nobody
has called him that nobody's calling me. Yeah, I don't know what's going
on. I got a free birthdaycake or bouqueta balloons to give out,
not just one, but I havetwo of those to give out. All
you have to do to put yourname in the drawing for that is to
have a birthday as a today's date. Of course, Tune twentieth, give
(01:05:24):
us a call five on five twothree two, fourteen thirty is a number
two call again five on five twothree two fourteen thirty. And we mentioned,
you know, June twentieth being todaybirthday for the legendary Brian Wilson of
the Beach Boys Journey eighty one.We got some other people, some other
celebrity birthdays. Let's see Anne Murray, another singer, a seventy eighth degree.
(01:05:47):
She's from Canada. Did you knowthat her and Gordon Lightfoot? There
you go. Actor John Goodman seventyone today. He is great in everything,
he really is. Yeah, it'sparticular literally the Cohen Brothers movies he's
been in. But you know heis, he's awesome. Uh. But
Lionel Richie seventy four years old.Uh, you probably didn't watch the US
(01:06:09):
Open golf tournament during the weekend.I did not know it was held at
Los Angeles Country Club. And theymentioned a few times whenever they'd come around
to this one particular part of thegolf course. Oh there's Lionel Richie's mansion
and that wise was you Lionel mustbe You know he's smart about his money.
I guess because man he was. He's a living large. It's all
in the agent, it's all inthe deal, Yeah, I guess.
(01:06:30):
H Actor Nicole Kidman is fifty sixyears old today. Anyone else uh worth
knowing? I mean not every notevery celebrity gets a shout out here right,
a discriminating you got you gotta earn, it is what I'm saying.
Anyway, Uh, happy birthday. If you are enjoying a birthday today,
(01:06:53):
maybe you're enjoying it too much toshare it with us. That's understandable,
but we still love to hear fromanyone who has a birthday today, or
anyone who knows anyone who has abirthday today. Give us a ring five
one, five, two, threetwo fourteen thirty. Scott will put you
on the list and maybe, justmaybe he'll pick you out as a winner
for a free birthday cake or balloonbouquet from the Ames High vs Uh coming
(01:07:15):
up later this morning. I alsowant to note, just coming up this
week, we've got a couple ofnights of Ames High Baseball and softball coming
up on new Stock fourteen thirty cassI. Tomorrow night, it will be
Ames Hide Baseball. They're hosting DeMoine Lincoln. Mel's gonna be very torn
about that because he went you know, he went to De Moine Lincoln High
School. But he's been in namesfor like a million years now and have
(01:07:38):
two, you know, two kidswho've gone through Rames High School. But
you cannot tell him he does notknow anything about the south side of De
Moines. Let's let's don't put itthere. Don't don't even infer don't even
don't even yeah, don't Mel Mels, those don't on top of things on
the south side there. But he'san old Roger sh Yeah. But Ames
and De Moine Lincoln Baseball Tomorrow night, doubleheader six forty five. We'll get
(01:08:00):
underway with the pregame here on Newstokfourteen thirty KASI. Now we turn around
on Thursday and we got Anamesized softballcoming up. Double header for that one
also starting at four forty five inthe evening. Marshalltown will be the opponent.
And incidentally, Thursday night is asenior night for both the Aimes softball
and baseball teams. So if you'reout there to the complex, you can
(01:08:23):
do both because one admission fee getsyou in to both games. So both
teams are planning their their senior nightsas it were against Marshalltown. Always fierce
rivalry between the Little Cyclones and Bobcats. And then you know, on top
of that another layer with the SeniorNight ceremonies coming up on Thursday, and
(01:08:45):
so we'll be at the softball matchupbetween Ames and Marshalltown for that double header
on Thursday evening, and then onFriday morning it's Mel hosting the breakfast club
once again. He'll be at AamesElectrical Services or the administration building right over
by Bandshell Park. So if youhave a group to from, I'm pointing
(01:09:06):
the wrong way again, Scott, very helpful. Uh, I have no
sense of direction. That's the problem. It's gonna have to adjust the left,
right, champion, the fade,uh whatever you're pointing east. Yeah,
I don't know. We gotta ifI If I don't point the correct
direction. Uh, people can tell, you can tell. No, I
(01:09:28):
know. That's what I'm saying isyeah, making sure there's some clarity.
There doesn't even if it's on theradio, you can still tell. But
anyway, if you if you havean event to promote, a nonprofit organization,
a fundraiser, something that you knowenhances our community, we'd love to
hear about it. Mel would loveto hear about it. He'd love to
visit with you at the Breakfast clubat the Ames Electric Services Administration office over
(01:09:49):
by Bandshell Park. That'll be Fridaymorning from seven thirty to eight thirty.
You're on new Stock fourteen thirty kSI. Speaking of a thirty That is
the current time on this Tuesday morning, and time for a news update eight
thirty eight on new Stock fourteen thirtyk s I Dave Sprout alongside Scott Kovac
filling in from Mel this morning. As uh, we're counting down the days
(01:10:09):
to Mel's retirement here. It's yeah, getting into the single digit thank are
pretty crazy anyway we are, We'recoming into single digits. He is.
Man, talk about somebody who's putin a lot of time. Oh,
man, talk about somebody who's putin the time. Mell Mell is up
there. Oh yeah, but yes, definitely put in the time. Um,
you know, Scott as we've mentionedmany times, uh in the past.
(01:10:35):
Not has to be that you haveno sense of cultural awareness under terrible
sense humor number one, number twosense humor. And you don't have a
car. And that is true. And believe it or not, I am
looking for a car. Oh goodfor you. Yeah, in like a
big, bad way. Uh.One of the things you you are missing
(01:10:56):
out on, what's by not havinga car is the road trip, the
American road. Everybody loves a goodroad trip, right right. Apparently some
auto dealer in Florida called Gutar MotorCompany put together a list of top one
hundred road trips in the country, and i Wis shows up in two entries.
Really yeah, not too bad,Huh. They got it at the
(01:11:19):
De Moines Register here and rote itup. So coming in at number twenty
one is a route from Sioux Cityto Burlington. That's kind of a meandering
route that'll take you pretty much playacross the state. Right you go from
northwest portion of Iowa right down tothe southeast corner. Those are not direct
(01:11:42):
routes, no, it's not.In fact, the route that is recommended
takes you on US Highways seventy fiveand thirty four. The thing is,
if you start out in Sux City, you take Highways seventy five to the
south, which is what you needto do to get down at three.
You're spending pretty much all that timein Nebraska. I don't know how much
of a Iowa road trip this trulyis, but uh, they'll take you
(01:12:04):
down seventy five will take you downsouth of the Omaha Council Bluffs area and
then meets up with Highway fourteen, and then Highway fourteen goes east west clear
across the state or thirty four, sorry, Highway thirty four pretty much clear
across the state. So you endup you go through Red Oak creston oh
(01:12:24):
Seola, sheraton A, Tamwa mountPleasant and down to Burlington on the Mississippi
River. There and there's plenty ofsee along the way. As the Register
points out, it's a short detourif you're so inclined to head out over
to Veliska and check out the axeMurder house while you're you're on drive.
(01:12:47):
Yeah, because who needs an axmurder when you're on the road. So
I'm like creeping yourself out with littleaxe murders some sort of thing that we've
we've been filmed on Friday the thirteenthor something. Yeah, and it's eerie.
So you'll be driving along you justhave visions of knives or axes coming
at you. Yeah. It remindsme of what's that movie with Mike Myers,
(01:13:08):
So I married? Yeah, goon the sixty sixth top one hundred
road trips, according to Florida CarDealership Gun the motor company. I don't
know what made them authority on this, but you know, to get to
get it done in the internet age, you just do it. This is
just do it. Go for it. Omaha to Dubuque via Highway twenty.
(01:13:30):
And by the way, that SiouxCity to Burlington trip covers three hundred and
eighty seven miles. The one thatwe just discussed, this one covers four
hundred miles six to seven hours onthe road if you go from Omaha to
Dubuque. And this one is kindof the reverse. If you start out
at Omaha and you go north toSioux City. Oh so all the way
(01:13:56):
up there. Yeah, and that'sthat's where Highway twenty. You take Highway
twenty out of Sux City and headto the east. You go all the
way across to Dubuque, now oneof the one of the pit stops you
can make on that one. Imean you go along there from su you
go through well you don't go throughFort Dodgico Passport Dodge, and there's Webster
City kind of along the way,and you're near Iowa Falls and into the
Waterloo area, and you keep goingpast past Independence in Manchester and then it's
(01:14:23):
just a short trip from there upto the Field of Dreams in Dyersville.
You can swing by and check thatout. This is just under a remodel,
as we understand. Yeah, they'rethey're building a giant like youth sports
complex up there, but you canstill visit. In fact, speaking of
a friend of mine who I grewup with in the Twin Cities, actually
traveled with her family to the Fieldof Dreams because her son was playing in
(01:14:46):
a baseball tournament down He's like elevenyears old, I think, playing a
youth baseball tournament down there, sothat's kind of cool. She invited me
to come up and say hi,and it's like two and a half hours
on a Saturday morning. No,thank you. Uh, shuffle around,
ye shows you how much I treatmy friends anyway. The the Omaha to
(01:15:10):
Dubuque trip, Yeah, you goup from Omaha to Sioux City and then
across Highway twenty and you also there'sa lot of parks along a lot of
rivers. Uh. You across theDubilian River. You go to Camp One,
no key, take a take ahike if you want to stretch out
your legs a little bit. Getstop an Iowa Falls for the Princess Grill
(01:15:32):
and Pizzeria. They gotta they gota picture uh in this story from the
Davilion Dridister's website, And it lookslike my kind of place because it's got
a very nineteen fifties diner vibe goingon. So I might may, May,
I'll just take a road trip myown up Diawa Falls. Hey,
it's like what forty five minutes.Sure, I'll take your word for it.
Yeah, it's not that far awayanyway. Um the uh the road
(01:15:59):
trip is is a fun deal.I don't get in quite as many of
those that I'd probably like, butum I mentioned we talked about this last
week. The previous weekend, Idid a mini road trip over to Templeton
to tour the Templeton ride is stillalready there, and that was that was
kind of fun and I kind ofenjoyed too, taking some back roads a
little bit and doing some sight seeing. Now, I would imagine with either
(01:16:23):
of these road trips, or anyroad trip you take within the state of
Iowa, you're gonna see a lotof corn. It's possible. Maybe if
you barns on the way. I'veheard, yeahs, you'll see, you'll
see that I was when I wasdriving back. Boy, I can't,
for the life of me remember whereI was. But when I was driving
back from Templeton, I saw thebarn with a big I think it was
(01:16:44):
a painting. It might have beena sign with the old school walking side
mascot depict it on it, youknow, yeah, exactly. Yeah,
it was weird. Do you seethose kind of things. People will decorate
their barns in different ways or paintthem, and some are old and dilapidated
and falling apart, and some arehave been restored or just in great condition.
(01:17:06):
And it's always eye catching to mesee how many farm farmsteads will have
older homes and how many will havenewer homes. And there's a lot more
new homes than you might think outthere when you take your your road trip
across Iowa Boere. I've a roadtrip to well, I don't know if
(01:17:28):
it counts as road trip if you'regoing there for work, because various places
I've gone in Council Bloffs in SiouxCity and Fort Dodge for various trips work
related to to cover inside sports.Road trip to Pella. We're actually Knoxville,
same general area to visit friends. In the past, have gone out
(01:17:48):
to the Quad Cities also to visitfriends I've made. The road trip to
field Rooms is more than twenty yearsago, definitely more in twy articles are
twenty five years ago. One timeI've actually been in the field and dreams
that was that was a bit ofa road trip, and I'm glad I
did it. It's like it's liketwo and a half hours here, you
(01:18:10):
go there after you get tired ofIowa City, Yeah, exactly, No,
I uh, there was a wholeit's a whole deal anyway. I've
also but speaking of Iowa City,I remember one year, this is going
back a while, a friend whowas going to a seminary college in Dubuque.
So after the Iowa State Iowa footballgame. I just drove up from
Iowa City to Dubuque to visit mybuddy and spent the night up there and
(01:18:30):
we hung out together. Because that'sthat's not too far f a trip Iowa
City to Dubuque. So I don'tknow if road it's this account as a
road trip off him going from hereto Iowa City to watch the Iowa State
Iowa football game. Yeah, especiallyespecially now here's my little secret on that.
I don't know how big a secret. This is a lot of people
obviously are going to take I eightybetween Des Moines and Iowa City to get
(01:18:53):
to that game. Yeah, Ido. If you're coming from ames there,
come from this general area, donot take I It is a nightmare.
First of all, I mean, all these let's call them Hawkeye fans
for life a better road probably drunkdriving on the interstate. I kid,
I kid, but there's a lotof traffic. And you know on those
(01:19:15):
game days on I eighty, Itake Highway thirty out of here, and
probably the simplest way to just takeEyeway Highway thirty to Cedar Rapids and then
you take three eighty on down intoand let's see what you're doing. You're
we are literally broadcasting the route thatyou take. Yeah, right, so
now everyone's and you're going to clearup eighty so I can just jet right
(01:19:39):
acros us. There you go.I'm just trying to help buy one two
fans who might be making that roadtrip that'll be next year. But um,
another way to go one. Andwhat I like to do is because
again I kind of like taking theback roads you take. You take thirty
out here, you get past tenmonths Aledo area, and then there's a
turnoff you can head south and makeyour way down to Highway six, and
(01:20:00):
then Highway six takes you all theway into Iowa City. In fact,
yeah, to the heart of IowaCity there. So yeah, I definitely
And it's all the same, liketraffic being decent. If it's good traffic,
whether it's on I eighty or onthese back roads, it's about two
hours either way. But if you'reon I eighty driving with all that traffic
(01:20:25):
between Iowa City and Des Moines,it's a nightmare. I'm telling you,
it's terrible. And my views onthis are definitely influenced by one instance when
I was driving back from that gameon I eighty, and traffic came to
a dead stop just in the middleof nowhere, and I'm like, what
is going on and waiting there fora while and waiting and wait and waiting,
(01:20:46):
and then I see a helicopter comingin and I realize what's going on.
Obviously there was some sort of crashand they got one of these life
flight helicopters to get somebody out ofthere. And I have no idea how
that turned out, but I gotto believe. So they Yeah, they
completely blocked the interstate to make room. I mean, not only the whatever,
(01:21:06):
you know, the wreckage was happeningthere, but to allow for the
helicopter land and take care of itsbusiness. And I said, you know
what, I'm never doing this again. And whenever I've gone over to Iowa
City for whatever reason, I havetaken Highway thirty the bulk of the way,
if not the entire way, allthe way to see the rapids and
(01:21:27):
then down from there. So ifyou're looking for a road trip, if
you're looking for a little more scenicor just avoiding traffic, when you next
time, you might be going overto the Iowa State Hioway game in Iowa
City. I say take the backroads. Definitely take the back road.
And wherever you're road tripping too,I say, take the back roads every
chance you get, because that's whereyou're gonna find probably the most interesting stuff
(01:21:50):
you certainly you know. I'm sureyou'll do your research, look for landmarks
or restaurants or something like that ifyou want to go to that's that's cool.
And one of these great things aboutplanning these things out on Google Maps
or whatever is that you can tryout various different routes see how long it'll
take you. In if the backroads, you know, aren't that much
longer than the main roads, thehighways or whatever, try the back roads.
(01:22:13):
Every time I go to Fort Dodge, you know, if the Ames
High game up there, I takethe back roads I go through, go
for towards Boone and then north fromthere instead of taking thirty five up to
twenty end. Just it's about thesame, I mean when it comes right
down to it, so and thenI avoid all it. You know,
all that traffic for the Ames FortDodge game. It's rivals the Iowa State
Iowa game for absolutely yea that thoseand I've taken these trips you know so
(01:22:39):
many times now to the other areaswhere AAMS plays that I am looking for
something to break up the monotony ofthe typical road trip on that. But
if you're looking for a good roadtrip, I guess, if you really
want to put some investment into it, you can make that Suicidy to Burlington
jaunt down Highways seventy five then overonto thirty four. That's one of the
things about living in the middle ofthe state as we are. Yeah,
(01:23:01):
there's not a lot of huge roadtrips that's going to take you across the
link of the state like that, but you can you can break it off
into shorter chunks, I guess,or you can take you can take the
Omaha to Dubuque route, go upfrom Omaha, up to Dubuque and over,
or up to city and then overon Highway twenty whatever. Those are
the two of the top one hundredroad trips in the state, according to
(01:23:24):
some random car dealership in Florida. There you go eight fifty one on Newstalk
fourteen thirty KSI eight fifty four onNewstalk fourteen thirty k A, s I.
Dave and Scott are filling in frommel in the morning, mails back
tomorrow and through the rest of theweek. I have a new favorite county
sheriff. And you know, welove Sheriff Fitzgerald here and expect the guy.
(01:23:45):
Good dude. But I got togive a shout out to the sheriff
of Volucia County in Florida. Hisname is Mike Chitwood, and he us
made an anti Semitic hate group angryat him and anybody anybody. Yeah,
first of all, if you're ifyou're making an anti Semitic group angry at
(01:24:09):
you, you're doing something right becausebecause obviously they're the jerks here. Okay,
let's get that straight first. Ifyou are part of an anti Semitic
hate group, you're the problem firstand foremost. We'll get that, you
know, established right away. Uh. This, this particular anti Semitic hate
(01:24:30):
group calls itself the Gaiam Defense League, and they are demanding that Lucia County
Sheriff Mike chit would pay them onehundred thousand dollars in gold and apologize for
calling them scumbags. Apparently these uhyeah, these uh, these scumbags uh
to borrow the sheriff's term, haveposted flyers around the community that look like
(01:24:55):
a lawsuit, but they're actually not. They're just a list of demands or
something, you know, something stupidlike that. Yeah, they've littered Volucia
County neighborhoods with anti Semitic flyers.Uh and uh they want the sheriff to
remove his tweets about his scumbag EradicationTeam T shirts. Okay, I'm digging
this guy. The shirt. Theshirt depicts the sheriff flushing some people,
(01:25:20):
including one person with a swastika tattooon his like, down a toilet.
He's got merch. Merch got uhanti anti Semitic group merch. I guess
so anyway, Um, so he'sgot T shirts? What is what is
he doing about the leader of thisanti or excuse me, the Anti Defamation
(01:25:44):
League has identify the leader of thisstupid anti Semitic hate group as one of
the four people who filed the notices. Now, so Sheriff Chitwood went to
uh social media, went on Facebookand decided to respond. And he says,
(01:26:06):
instead of sending you whatever you wantby he took the little flyers whatever
that these jerks were handing out aroundtown and ripped him up on the Facebook
video and then said the only thingyou're getting from me is pacifiers, the
implication being that they are a bunchof babies. To acknowledge, now the
(01:26:28):
sheriff refers to these flyers as alawsuit, They're not a lawsuit. To
keep that minds listening to this quote, but anyway to acknowledge that we received
this piece of crap on paper withthe misspelled words you're so intelligent. We
will be mailing one of these toeach of you that filed a lawsuit.
And basically it says, Mike chitwouldhurt my feelings. Should then la pascifier
close to the camera to show yeah, you can. Here's a shot for
(01:26:51):
you to suck on the pass firebecause that's about all you're going to get
from your lawsuit. Again, sointense, not a lawsuit. Hit would
has been battling the group since thebegan spreading hate messages via flyers in neighborhoods,
leaflets placed on car windshields, andanti Semitic banners hung on a pedestrian
overpass near the Daytona International Speedway.Chitwood and his family have been the target
(01:27:12):
of threats and three men from outof the state have in charge with threatening
to kill the sheriff. Well again, if it's these type of people who
are mad at you and threatening tokill you, you're doing something right.
Shit would said our punk Thud cowardlyscumbags, a bunch of rogues, gallery
(01:27:33):
criminals are at it again as hesaw the video. He showed a video
of like a security camera showing someguy yelling anti Semitic epithets and homophobic and
racial slurs at people. And he'spointed out there like you are a jerk
and an idiot and a coward anda scumbag, and I'm behind you one
(01:27:55):
hundred percent, Sheriff Chitwood, youhave my okay, Well, I can't
vote. Maybe I'll make a campaigndonation of this guy. But anybody you
know, if you're if you're willingto step up and say you're an idiot
to people who are you know, organized anti semitics, more power to you.
That's gonna wrap things up for Tuesdayfor Scott. I'm Dave. Thanks
for listening to new Stock fourteen thirtyKA
