Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to another episode of I Tell You What it is.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
Memorial Day Weekend, also known as Decoration Day, also known
as a federal holiday and a day to observe those who.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
Have fallen in service for our country.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
It is different, well, certainly different than Labor Day, okay,
which is bookend summer, and certainly different than Veterans Day
and any other day. This is Memorial Day weekend, making
that very clear right out of the gates. I'm K
one O two because I was just reading the thing
we came into prep that all the radio stations get.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
I don't know. I'm just paraphrasing a little bit here.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
It's about it's like fifty to fifty people know what
today is, which is kind of sad because that means
about fifty percent of the people don't know what this
weekend is.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Not today but this coming Monday.
Speaker 3 (00:50):
Yes, and then but when you get people who say, oh,
happy Memorial Day, Oh happy Memorial Day weekend, they really
don't get.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
That's like saying happy good Friday. Kind of right, a
little different but kind of the same, long the same,
yeah to day to kind of I remember it as
a kid being in the band and going to the
cemetery and performing a service and knowing how I mean,
just and I'll be honest with you. I mean I
(01:15):
was in high school, what fourteen fifteen years old. I
had a little more of a clue to a lot
of things going on because I had grandparents in wars.
My dad fought no war, that kind of stuff, and
knew what Memorial Day was a little more about. It
was kind of in our family more so. But I
remember the band director always being this isn't a day
(01:37):
screw around. You know, this isn't a halftime show. This
is a show that or this is a performance that
we're doing at a cemetery in front of a lot
of people that lost loved ones in the line of service,
in the line of serving their country. So and I
just remember that sticking and it was how quiet it was.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
You know, we go up as a band.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
And everybody just just as a group. You knew there
wasn't a lot of you know, because when you're a kid,
you find a place to screw off anywhere and everywhere.
It doesn't matter where you are, what you're doing. You
just you're you're a kid. You're not fully developed, Your
brand isn't fully developed. You don't really always know what's
going on. You forget where you're at and forget your
place or whatever. But I remember that as just being
(02:19):
this entire group of people Memorial Day at a cemetery,
with the band so quiet, walking on playing songs and
then patriotic music, and then coming off in the twenty
one and they did the salute, you know, the gun
salute and everything, and I just remember it being so docile,
(02:40):
so quiet, and it was really moving, and I just
think there's those services are less and less now from
what there were many many years ago. Not trying to
sound like the old timer. I think they're still out there,
but I don't know if the bands are performing, the
high school bands are performing like they used to.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
It used to be all over the place.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
I think that they're still out there. I think you
see it a lot more in small towns.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
I don't know why.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
I don't know why. Absolutely, yes, you definitely see it
more in small towns. I don't quite know why that
would be, because in these bigger towns and these bigger cities,
you have so many families that have lost somebody serving
their country. You have so many people you know it
that you know can relate to that, and so I
just don't totally get that, but it is definitely still very,
(03:25):
very prominent. I mean, even driving around Buffalo Maple Lake area,
you see a lot of American flags out there.
Speaker 1 (03:30):
Right now, I agree with that. Right County you kidding me?
Speaker 3 (03:35):
Right County is glorious.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
I'm not ripping hanpin Well a little, you know, no
Scott County, Right County, you know some of the you know, Sherburn.
I mean, it's and I'm sorry if I'm missing anybody,
but you know, it had been a little it's a
little different.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
It's just it's just a little get a little different
feel going on there.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
When we were looking for a property to eventually purchase,
I told author it was like, my one requirement is
that it's in Right County. Also that it's not further
than Maple Lake to work for me, but mostly that
it's in Wright County.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
That was like my big thing, and thankfully we found one. Well,
let's get a high school band out there to Chris
of the property. This well, maybe next weekend, not this week.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
They're probably busy this weekend, I hope.
Speaker 2 (04:19):
I'm also on the same note, and a lot of
people are like, you know, don't be celebrating hot dogs
and brats. It's like, no, don't be celebrating that. But
that's part of this weekend. I mean, it's also when
you pick really well you also you're heading into the
unofficial start of summer, yeah, and everything else. And when
you think about it, and I think about my grandparents
and even my dad, who fought in major wars, and uh,
(04:43):
that's kind of why. I mean, that isn't the entire
reason of why they did it. So we could have
hot dogs on the fourth of July or hot dogs
on Memorial Day weekend. But that's part of the great
thing about being in America, the freedoms that we have.
And that's just that's kind of you know, baseball, hot
dogs and apple pie.
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Maybe I think it's an important thing to remember. Of course,
this is a somber holiday because we are remembering those
who we've lost, but also think about what they stood
to protect. And that's America, that's us. That's the freedom
to embrace whatever we want to do and what.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
You want to eat, buy the grill you want to buy,
and it's turn it up to the temperature you want
to turn it up to. Exactly have charole if you
want to have a campfire, if.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
You want to remember and honor those who we lost,
but also cherish what they protected in doing so.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
I don't capsulate that audio if I didn't step on
the last part of it, dubs, and I just ruled
the whole Yeah, beautiful, that really no, seriously, no, but
I mean if you and it is a lot of
people also talk about, you know, honoring actives. We should
honor active service members and former service members every day,
you know, but this weekend specifically, and Monday specifically, is
(05:52):
those who lost their life, yes, or lost their lives
in well serving our and whatever capacity that was out
on the battlefield or doing whatever they were doing.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
So I did see a good uh it's like a
not really a meme. It's like a little cartoon thing
and it's this dad and kid grilling and it's like, Dad,
how much did all this stuff cost? And he goes
everything into the next slides like a headstone for a
fallen soldier. And I was like, you know what, that
really puts it into perspective.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Dude. You just gave me goosebumps. Seriously, that's just look
at it. You just that you pinted a picture that's
got radio right there. Seriously, I mean.
Speaker 2 (06:30):
That's down on the Chris Card company Facebook page. Yeah,
can you get that now? I want to see that now.
I just like all of them. I'm all amped up right,
very good.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
If anybody, by the way, if there's anything that you
have to say at any time, that another great thing
about being an American is you can say whatever you
want to say. And we are truly freedom of the
press here, right, and you just drop your message on
talk back on the iHeartRadio app, and a lot of
rip anything that you have to say about what we
said or something, because I love what you two just added,
and I'm sure there's a lot of other people that
would like to say something to talk back on the
(07:01):
iHeartRadio app. You're listening to Cable two, you just hit
the microphone and boom you let her rip.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Thank you for listening this episode. Oh I tell you what.
Speaker 2 (07:09):
