(00:00):
Okay, you guys, it's thelatest greatest way of getting hurt nowadays.
In this episode of I Tell YouWhat, how are people getting hurt?
Think of a weird way to gethurt? Well, I stand on an
ottoman and fall and hurt your hand. No not, everyone's used Sam,
Okay, even though you didn't breakyour wrist, I'll take it. No,
people are getting hurt more and morefrom walking their dogs. What it's

(00:22):
actually quadrupled. Dog walking injuries hasquadrupled in the last twenty years. Why
he's from Johns Hopkins University. Arepeople okay? Why four hundred twenty two
thousand people have gone to the emergencyroom after being hurt just from walking their
dogs, which is supposed to beone of the greatest things you could ever

(00:44):
do, is to have a dog. It's beneficial for the dog, it's
beneficial for you. It's good bonding. I do it every day with Aaron.
Aaron and I do a run,jog walk thing, And I mean,
he's just that's his zone. Man, He's so happy. My neighbor
even says, is that dog evernot happy? He does seem pretty happy
every time I see him. Womenages forty to sixty four made up most

(01:11):
of the patients, and most ofthe injuries are finger fractures, shoulder sprains,
shoulder strains, and traumatic brain injuries. White, so are they slipping
on the ice. This must bepeople who have dogs that maybe aren't trained
to walk nicely. And because ifthey're getting like finger injuries, wrist injuries,

(01:34):
they must be getting dragged by theirdogs. Well, you're you're dead
on with that, because I meankind of it comes around to the end
of the story a little bit ofwhat we're supposed to do when walking our
dogs. Because what we just saidearlier, the shoulder sprains and shoulder strains,
that's that's a leash that you typicallyhold. You're wrapped around your wrist.
Yeah, never wrap it around yourhand. That's a big thing with

(01:57):
horses. You're taught to never wrapa lead rope around your wrist because that
can happen. Boy, I doit all the time when I'm running.
You have to rain him in alittle bit, so I wrap it up.
Yeah, you're not supposed to forthat reason. And it makes sense
that women control me though, Imean, he's not big enough. He's
big, but he's not. Well, that's the thing though, So,
and this is just a physiological thingwith women's bodies compared to men's bodies,

(02:19):
right, you get a woman thatwe naturally don't have the same upper body
strength that men do. Sam,We're not told to say that anymore.
It's all the same act tell youwhat we're supposed to say, and it's
trend. That's okay, Well,my tongue is firmly planted within my cheek,
I know. Uh. And Ithink that there are a lot of

(02:40):
large dog breeds that have become very, very trendy, and you couple that
with the there's just a lot offactors here, Okay. So one,
you got female dog handlers. Ifthis is because you said that this is
a lot of women that are gettinginjured and has a woman reports according to
the report? Um? And thenI think that we have a trend with
big dog breeds becoming very popular andpeople just don't work with their dogs enough,

(03:07):
Like that's just a Factum. Ifyou have a dog, there are
certain things that you should train themfor their own safety and for yours,
and a lot of people don't takethe time to do it. And that's
with really any animal. People willget a horse and not do the proper
training with it. But they justdon't know. Right. You love them
and that's great, but you alsoshould teach them things and people just don't
do it. And no, they'regetting hurt. I loved your input.

(03:27):
None of that is what they sayis effective. But I think probably they're
too afraid. I'll say it.I will say what you said makes more
sense what you're about. What I'mabout to tell it. Did they say
they number one? They say shorterleases to avoid tripping on them. So
I guess people are tripping out ofthem. So I can't we can't discount
that. Avoiding places where a dogis known to be distracted. Good fffing

(03:53):
luck. My dog sees one squirrelanywhere and he's just buying. I want
to bike with him. But that'sreally good. Um, but yeah,
you can't, dude. It's adog. And I know you can train
your dogs. I get all that, but man, I also like my
dog. He's very well trained.Aaron is very well trained. Um,

(04:17):
but he's also I want him tobe a dog, so he's well trained
on the stuff that he should be, in my opinion, trained on a
lot of courtesies and stuff. Hewaits at the top of the steps for
you to go down, right,so he doesn't mow you over and get
mixed up in your legs. Hedoes that basically, um for elderly grandparents
and that kind of stuff. Stayat the top of the steps, wait

(04:38):
for them to go down, youknow, that kind of stuff. Otherwise
I want him to be a dog. You wanted to have fun. I
love a little a d D.See a squirrel, I tease him.
I'm like, here's a ghost, you know, and he goes crazy,
where's the squirrel? I love that. I mean, that's part of his
fun. So they say, don'twalk your dog where he's known he or
she is known to be distracted. And but this I don't get so much.

(05:00):
I would have a problem with thisusing But then again they do say
more women are having injuries than men. Using a front attaching harness to help
keep the dog from pulling. Yeah, there's a lot of like and I
don't use this on the dog. You're on you on the dog, okay,
Because I see people with the frontattaching harness around their waist, I
seem to me that seems worse. That is unsafe for sure, right one,

(05:26):
the one that they're referring to isfour dogs. They're called like an
anti pulling harness where they go.It's a harness that goes on the dog
and then instead of the clip beingon the back, it's on the front,
so that if you pull, itredirects their chest and they're not able
to lurch forward. Okay, doyou understand kind of what I'm describing?
And um, and I think thenit. I guess it kind of like
loops around you, but behind theirnecker. So the clips the front attaching

(05:51):
harness. It's on the front oftheir chest is where the clip is.
So they're walking behind you, No, they would. I mean your dogs
should be walking next Yes, technicallyyeah, And if they're walking next to
you, then it doesn't really matter, right. If they get too far
ahead of you, though, it'llit will pull back and around. So
whatever side it's on, it'll redirecttheir chest. They can't pull. No,
I can get chest eyes for this. But we have a walking collar

(06:14):
that we have with him that reallyhelps. Is it a pron caller?
Yep, I think pron callers areamazing. Actually doesn't bother him, Yeah,
he at least he hasn't said anything. No, it actually so when
I first, by the way,it's much safer. I jog with Emma
with a pron collar on. AndI never ever used a pron caller until
I started dating my husband. Myhusband put it around his neck. No

(06:40):
on the weekend, Sam no,okay, no, tell us all about
it, Sam no. Um.So Hathorne had to educate me about pron
callers because he's a dog trainer. He has dogs that he uses for hunt
tests and things like that, andI just didn't know anything about them.
I was pretty ignorant, like alot of people, and you just see
kind of like something that looks spikyand it seems like it would not be

(07:02):
nice, so I just wouldn't usethem. But then he kind of taught
me that it actually it doesn't hurtthem, and it just puts pressure in
a certain way where they feel itbetter, and it's so much safe.
The response is like that compared toa typical collar that's just a leather yeah
strap or night or whatever the thing'smade up. And he pointed out too,
which I didn't realize, but ittotally makes sense, like with a

(07:24):
normal collar, if you use thatwhen you're walking and they do pull,
like with Emma when I would walkher with a normal collar, she'd pull
and it would choke her, she'dcough, she'd puke sometimes because she pulls
the bad he doesn't do. Sothe pron collar, instead of it being
a straight strap of pressure that willchoke them, it alleviates. Yes,

(07:46):
it is just kind of touching themin like every couple inches apart um,
and so it's not choking them. It's just a sensation that they feel and
they're like, oh yeah, Idon't have to pull again. So what
happens when he used it on Hawthorne? Does he m? And when do
you use it? Like? Isit when he's in the kitchen? Um?
Is it times? Like I know, social functions. He's had a

(08:09):
few drinks from any time that weleave the house because I don't want him
to run away from me, andhe just tried to bolt. Worried about
that? What's happening for him tomaybe want to don't worry about it.
I want to leave so so abruptly. Don't worry about it. What are
you doing to him? Sam?Nothing? Do we need to call Hawthorne?
Get him on the podcast? Nothing? I love it. We always

(08:31):
the podcast always ends itself when itgoes way off track. Yeah, it's
just it's like a little sign thatsays, Okay, it's time to say
