International rugby coverage on the Country Sport Breakfast is proudly

away from the first All Black Test of twenty twenty four,
first All Black Test under Scott Robinson, All Blacks hosting
England out of Dunedin's forsythe Bar kickoff just after seven
(00:22):
here on Gold Sport and an iHeartRadio joining us on
the show. The man that we'll be calling the game
for us, Elliot Smith.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Morning, Elliott, Good morning, BK.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
You're getting excited, mate.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
One more sleeps ago, a little bit like Christmas. I
got last night's sleep out of the way and then
we're into it tomorrow night. And it has that sort
of feeling about it, doesn't it The sense of everything
being new about this team, new coaching staff, team, new
players or new combinations. It just all feels a little
bit exciting, which is good. I mean, we had the
(00:54):
World Cup last year obviously, and that's a different kind
of pressure, but certainly a different feeling as we as
we count down to tick off tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (01:01):
Talking about counting down, I was really looking forward to
eleven thirty yesterday morning when the team was announced twenty
three names, and I think everyone was there were a
few little surprises in there. I think the biggest Stephen
Parafenna in the fifteen jersey over body, Barrett, what are
your thoughts there?
Speaker 2 (01:15):
A big surprise that being named yesterday at the team
naming eyebrows raised certainly among the Rugby journalist fraternity. When
we saw that team drop and not a selection that
any of us were expecting, it felt like Boden Barrett
had that jersey lockdown at least were the first tiest
of the year, and with the options that they had
(01:36):
at their disposal, and by not selecting Reuben Love a
few weeks ago, it felt like, well, they've made the
obvious selection here that Boden Barrett's going to start at fifteen,
but instead of Steven Petterfetter, and that's a bit of
a statement I think from the All Blacks coaching staff.
The selectors are around the way they want to play.
I'd expected to Fetter under the roof tomorrow night to
use that running game so effectively that we've seen them
(01:58):
do for the Blues, to see susceptively quick and just
has that ability to put teams on the back foot.
That's what they want to do it in England tomorrow night,
and that's the decision that's made. And it's very inexperienced
fullback to put them there. Pet A Fetter only having
one test start prior to this vote and Baron on
(02:19):
the other hand having one hundred and twenty plus test
of experience on the bench that a fed against the nods.
There's probably a feeling that when Will Jordan gets back
later in the year to full fitness, that's his dues.
But for the time beating at seven peed a festa
and if your Boat and Barrett Well come from Japan
and you're going to have a ten and fifteen off
the bench. But it probably suggests that Bill Blacks at
(02:40):
this point in time looking to you more as an
impact player rather than a starter. In this all black side.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
I was a little bit surprised with the choice of
halfback as well, TJ Perrinara, what about you look to.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Me, there wasn't as much of this a surprise. I
think TJ has played some really good rugby this year
and it's funny you look at most a Peta setter
selection and also so the TJ Pedinarra s election and
possibly they may not have actually got these burths if
it wasn't for injuries to other players, and there's super
rugby team with Petifetter, he was moved to fall back
(03:12):
with Zahn Sullivan injured, Harry Plummel was starting at ten
for the Blues if Sullivan's not sulomon Is, but then
Petterfeeder is probably starting at ten and maybe doesn't get
the fifteen earth for tomorrow at night. And for TJ Peninara,
he would have spent the majority of the season behind
a fit cam boy guard at the Hurricanes before he
got injured, so that sort of changed things on its head.
(03:32):
But I think with McKenzie there, who's you've been around
the All Blacks for a number of seasons, but he
hasn't started too many big tests at ten, they want
that experience of TJ Pedinara as a steady hand. I
think throwing someone like a Cortiers Rasama, And even though
there would be that Chiefs combination at nine and ten,
probably just a little bit too early for someone like
Cortiers Rasama to come into this All Black side and
(03:55):
started half back Christie the other one obviously came off
the bench in the World Cup Final last year, but
has the've gone with that experience of TJ Pettinara was
interesting to hear Scott Robinson yesterday saying he's been a
bit like a caart, you know, the multi worth for
Grandfather around you. All Black team this week so really
valued that experience, and I think when you've had so
many players depart Whitelock, Retallic Malonga other players of course
(04:19):
have left as well, you need to lean on the
experience you do have and that's what we've done. I
think by silly Peedina at.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Half back, you've been into need in a couple of
days with the team training. What's the feeling like in
camp first test under the Razor Robinson era. Are there
more nerves and excitement or the opposite?
Speaker 2 (04:36):
No, I think there's plenty of excitement around around the
camp and just a feeling of the unknown, which is
probably the same for US fans ahead of tomorrow night
and commentators and media and whatever it might else might
be with a sense of the unknown, but there's also
a real edge and excitement around camp. Those players that
haven't worked under Scott Robertson before a learning a bit
about him and his coaching methods that have been part
(04:59):
of the Crusaders previously. Obviously know what it's like on
a wee bit of a smaller scale there, but it's
been expanded at All Blacks level and what that means
around there, So it's all changed, and I think that's
what everyone given the run a bit of energy, something
that might be nervous energy, but I think they can
only be a good thing as heading to him. You
think back twenty years ago, it's probably been at three
(05:22):
of Sir Graham Henry, first as Dave Burt in two
thousand and four ress coach, then we had Steve Hansby,
We're done to Sir Graham Henry. Then Ian Foster have
worked of course worked under Steve Hanson forever for a
number of years as well before he gets the head
coaching role. So for the first time in twenty years,
that sort of thread isn't really Zara and O Jason
Ryan works alongside Ian Foster. But this is certainly the
(05:44):
biggest sea change All Blacks have had in twenty years
coaching staff, so that means it's all new as well
for the players and the management and to everyone watching
along as well. So that's why I think there's that
nervous energy, but also that their positive energy around Camp.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
Two on the English side of things is more media
than players here, I think at the moment and think
they think the All Blacks are there for the taking,
don't they? They do.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
They love saying that the English and I guess the
proof will be tomorrow night is whether they were They're
right or not. Look, this is an England team that's
on the build. I think you look at their Six
Nations form and they beat Islands right at the end
of that loss to France narrowly in Lyon, and then
they'll fit the Japan relatively comfortably a fortnight ago. So
(06:28):
they've got their team together for a bit longer than
the All Blacks have, which is ten days you know,
over the last week and a half or thereabouts since
they got the last Wednesday in the capital. So when
you're coming at it from that perspective, certainly that's probably
an opportunity for England. They've got the combinations a wee
bit more set than the All Blacks will ahead of
(06:48):
Saturday night. So look, this is an England team that's
got a few more tricks up at sleeve, probably than
what we've seen in the past. You know, we think
of England and probably consigned as that ten Nan rugby style,
but you look at the way they play some really
really good outside backs and exciting outside back Marcus Smith's
a dynamic first five is some really good ball carriers
up front. There are forced to be reckoned with England
(07:10):
and developing quite nicely under Steve Borthwick. And there'll be
a real challenge under the roof. The All Blacks will
try and run them round under full size bar stadium
and look, it's going to be interesting to see how
the two styles end up clashing. Come tomorrow night.
Speaker 1 (07:25):
Elliott, all Blacks are England to win.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
Look, I've said all Blacks all the week. I think
twelve and under. I think it'll be close and we'll
get a sense of how things are tracking under the
new regime. It won't be perfect tomorrow night, but I'm
going to say the All Blacks get home and can
get the metaphorical anyway points on the board to start
the season.
Speaker 1 (07:44):
Elliot, look forward to your call on Saturday night right
here on gold Sport. Thank you for joining us, mate.
Cheers v Kay that's Elliott Smith and as I said,
we'll have a live commentary of that match here on
gold Sport the build up from six o'clock with our
team in full Syth Bar Stadium. Him
