Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Gary and Shannon and you're listening to KFI
AM six forty, the Gary and Shannon Show on demand
on the iHeartRadio app. I expect a flight from Miami
to Philly to get a little bit crazy, but I
feel like the bar has been raised so high when
it comes to altercations in the sky that just a
simple fistfight between two dudes doesn't really excite me anymore.
(00:21):
It's like a Tuesday, right. One guy says he was meditating,
the other says he was whispering threats, so to come
to punches. I'm kind of like that doesn't really rise
to the level of tear in the skies anymore. You know,
no one's taken off their clothes. We don't have flight
attendants in tears. No one is using the bathroom outside
of the bathroom on the airplane.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
It just isn't good enough.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
You're gonna have to do better to make the show
if you're going to act a fool in the skies.
Marco Rubio, have you heard about AI taking over Marco
Rubio's identity? Apparently an imposter is using AI to pose as.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
The Secretary of State.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
This AI impostor has contacted three foreign ministers, a US governor,
and a member of Commerce Congress. I was going to
say commerce, same difference, right, We'll talk about it when
we do our Ai roundup Desk coming up in the
eleven o'clock our Gary and Channon Show. It is Tuesday,
July eighth, twenty twenty five. Gary remains on vacation, thoughts
(01:27):
and prayers for all of the Islands of Hawaii. Virtual
hearing set this afternoon for Sean Diddy Combs regarding his
sentencing for sex crimes and the possibility it may happen sooner.
He does remain behind bars in New York schedule to
learn his punishment on October third, but his lawyers and
(01:48):
now prosecutors have expressed interest in moving up that date.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Probably want to move on with their lives.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
This will be discussed during today's hearing, along with possible
sentencing recommendations. I don't believe he's going to do any time.
It's no priors kind of a thing, probation. We've seen
it with crimes much worse than he was convicted of.
He was found guilty of transporting people for prostitution, but
cleared of the more serious charges. The Dodgers take on
(02:16):
the Brewers in Milwaukee, first pitch at four forty. Listen
to all Dodgers games on AM five seventy LA Sports
live from the gallupin Motors Broadcast booth, and stream all
Dodgers games in HD on the iHeart app. Keyword AM
five seventy LA Sports. That's where I was listening yesterday. Yuck,
(02:36):
what's going on with the Dodgers? Shocking blowout Brewers nine
to Dodgers won, and this just after Dodgers have their
worst loss ever at Dodgers Stadium when they lost to
the Astros eighteen to one.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
The Hell's going on? Shoe a Tawny showing.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
Frustration at the plate while there's still six games up
in the NL West, so not a time to panic.
An update from Texas, where flooding they're now responsible for
taking the lives of over one hundred people. Search and
recovery efforts now in their fifth day. Officials say rescue
(03:13):
ops have faced extremely treacherous conditions. Still five campers and
one councilor missing from that girl's camp in Kerr County,
whereas we reported to you, twenty seven girls and a
counselor died. There is a chance for some rain today,
but they are going to get a break from the storms.
I was reading an article in the Washington Post and
(03:33):
an opinion piece about Camp Mystic, and they tracked down
Lyndon Johnson's daughter, who's eighty one now, Linda Lady Bird Johnson,
Linda bir Johnson, and she, as we mentioned yesterday, several
generations of the Lyndon Johnson family had gone to camp,
and she is one of them. This camp, by the way,
(03:55):
opened in nineteen twenty six and apparently had a legendary
reputation among Texans of privilege that people were known to
put their daughters on the waiting list at birth.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
I think this is a thing that happens.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
With the uber rich of wait lists for children for
schools and camps and societies and all that. It's such
a different world, isn't it. Girls in their cabins could
look up and see the names of their mothers and
aunts and grandmothers carved into the rafters. Functioned as a
(04:28):
bit of a finishing school, a social launching pad where
you could learn how to shoot a twenty two alongside
your etiquette class and art classes. This was all about
making the connections that would get you into the right
sorority at the University of Texas. How to marry well,
you're entry into the elite circles, so to speak. Linda Johnson,
(04:53):
by the way, she says that reached by phone at
eighty one, that she remembers her time there fondly. I
tried golfing, she says, I was a failure, but I
love swimming. In his letters, her father, the president, well
this is nineteen fifty six, he's getting ready to run
for president. Her father encouraged Linda, who was the shy one,
the shy older daughter, and at the time they thought
(05:15):
this would kind of bring her out of her shell.
They were on the East Coast and sent her to
Texas that she would work at becoming better at horseback riding,
and in fact, she did win a silver charm for
her improvement. Lbjay also wrote that he wouldn't mind if
she lost a few pounds. Self reliance was demanded. They
(05:37):
say at this camp that girls were expected to keep
their rooms clean, do their own laundry. I love that
lesson of self reliance. On Sundays, they wore white and
they had to produce at least one letter. They had
written home to be allowed to partake in the delicious
fried chicken lunches. Linda Johnson says that they would call
them chicken letters. You write your letter and you get
(05:58):
your chicken times from the past. There such a tragedy
enveloping Camp Mystic this week there in Texas.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
There is a great story.
Speaker 1 (06:08):
There's going to be several stories, and we highlighted some
of them yesterday. And it's hard to wrap your head
around loss and devastation like this, and so what I
kind of choose to do is to focus on the
rescue stories and the stories of survival because they are heartwarming.
There is a story about a swimmer. First saw it yesterday.
It has since made the rounds. A coastguard swimmer who
(06:29):
rescued one hundred and sixty five girls from that Camp Mystic.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
I looked it up today.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
There was about seven hundred girls at Camp Big Camp,
Big popular camp there that you got to put your
name on a waiting list when you're born. But anyway,
there was a coastguard swimmer who rescued one hundred and
sixty five girls.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Will tell you his story. He's speaking as well.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
You're listening to Gary and Shannon on demand from KFI
AM six forty.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
Got True Crime Tuesday coming up later in the show.
Did you know that about fifty percent of murderers get
away with it?
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Stop?
Speaker 1 (07:03):
Stop, I know what you're thinking. Do not put it down.
Put it down. That does not mean you get to
kill somebody of your choosing. Okay, we'll get into the
weeds and why that happens. Also, two new occupants at
the Monterey Zoo. I mean, don't think these penguins are
going to land without us telling you about it.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
We've got that for you as well.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
Big change is coming to TSA and a love story
coming up next, so make sure you keep it here.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
It's a beautiful love story.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
Who doesn't love a love story, especially when it begins
in nature. Amazon Prime Day will last four days this year.
Have you checked it out yet already? It is today
through the eleventh. Started as a one day event ten
years ago. Isn't everything on sale on Amazon Prime? I
(07:51):
mean don't they lead with the sale items usually?
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Anyway?
Speaker 1 (07:56):
Whatever, it's another reason to shop on an non shopping season.
So congratulations Amazon new this year if you're into it,
are today's big deals. I have an aunt, aunt Carla,
who loves a sale. She talks about going to Pennies
all the time, and she loves a sale. She loves
her coupons, and she makes and saves a lot of
(08:18):
money because of it. So new this year for Amazon
Prime Today's Big Deals, you'll see themed daily deal drops
featuring deep discounts on brands like Samsung, Levi's. Those will
launch daily at midnight Pacific time.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
So already.
Speaker 1 (08:33):
Also, are you one of those planners? Maybe you're one
of those planners. You buy planners. You buy a bunch
of stuff on Amazon Prime Day or days now this year,
and maybe you do Christmas shopping in July.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Maybe that's a thing that you could do.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
I was just reading this article in ESPN before we
get back to a survival story out of Texas. It's
about Joe Burrow. Have you checked out the documentary on Netflix?
Quarterback kind of profiles four different quarterbacks at different stages
in their career. It's a good watch to get you
ready for the NFL season, which is happening in oh
I don't know twenty two days if you can believe it.
(09:10):
But anyway, Joe Burrow is one of the quarterbacks Bengals
quarterback who doesn't love Joe Burrow. I mean, maybe if
you hate LSU. But Joe Burrow's a fun story to
watch unfold. And there's a plot line apparently, and I
haven't seen it yet because it just dropped today. This
season of Quarterback, there's a plot line that Joe Burrow
(09:32):
wanted to buy a fully functioning batmobile. Apparently this was
a plot line in season one and this season. In
the show that dropped today, he talks about how he
canceled his previous purchase of the replica fully functioning Batmobile
after his home was broken into. They were on the
road the Bengals were they playing the Cowboys at the time.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
He's away from home. His home gets broken into.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
He was really excited about buying this applica fully functioning batmobile,
and he said, I didn't end up getting it because
I just had other things I needed to deal with
at that point. Now everyone knows where I live, and
I don't know if I don't want to. It's my home.
The thing that I love about this is number one,
Joe Burrow. I don't know how old he is. I
want to put him at twenty six, twenty seven, something
(10:19):
like that. Joe Burrow makes an s ton of money,
and what does he want?
Speaker 2 (10:23):
He is a boy, he is still a boy.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
He wants and who wouldn't want a fully functioning batmobile?
I mean that is awesome, Like you grow up your
quarterback of the Bengals and you get a batmobile?
Speaker 3 (10:37):
Like?
Speaker 2 (10:37):
Is that not the dream? And the fact that he
would put his house in jeopardy. He hasn't moved out
of his house even though everyone knows where he lives.
It was broken into.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
But he wouldn't want to put the batmobile in jeopardy.
Oh my gosh, that is that is the dream right there?
That is living the dream. Okay, a brief story of
survival there out of Texas. Have you heard about the
young Coastguard rescue swimmer.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
His name is Scott Ruskin.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
Scott Ruskin has only completed his rescue swimmer training about oh,
I don't know, February.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
He finished in February.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
This was Scott Ruskin's first emergency call, his first experience
saving lives at this magnitude. It was about seven am.
We told you the rain. The heavy rain started at
about one to two am. Texas time picked up three
four and just devastation from four o'clock into the morning. Well,
it's about seven am when word finally gets to the
(11:38):
US Coast Guards air station and Corpus Christi there in Texas,
and it's Scott Ruskins team that gets a call to
respond to that deadly flooding just sweeping across central Texas.
He's twenty six, He's from New Jersey and he says,
I just happened to be on the duty crew. He
said that the flight between Corpus Christi and Hunt, Texas,
(11:59):
where they were going to dispatched to, usually only takes
about an hour, but the weather was atrocious, worst flying,
he says, we've ever dealt with. The flight took between
seven and eight hours. Imagine that a one hour flight
taking seven or eight because of the weather. That's what
they were up against. Once they arrived, they landed there
at Camp Mystic, at the girls camp. He was left there.
(12:22):
They just dropped off Scott. That was their main triage
site they were trying to help out with, and he
thought the thought process was that it would free up
more space on the rescue helicopter so that victims could
be taken to safety. He says, I kind of discovered
I was the only person there as far as first
responders go, I had about two hundred kids, mostly all scared, terrified, cold,
(12:43):
having the worst day of their life. I just needed
to triage them, get them to a higher level of care,
and get them out of.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
The flood zone.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
He worked alongside members of the US Army National Guard
to get people loaded into safety. He says, we came
up with two different landing zones off an archery field
and then went in a soccer field. We're able to
kind of land those sixty rescue helicopters there.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
Where to go.
Speaker 1 (13:07):
He says, I was the main guy in terms of
grabbing people and triaging who needs to get on these
helicopters first and get them to safety. He said that
once they got them in the helicopters, they flew them
from a different landing zone out of the flood zone there.
But again, this is his first call for service. He
had just finished rescue swimmer training at the Coastguard. Now
(13:29):
they do get the highest level of training in the world,
the Coastguard rescue swimmers. But and he relied on that,
knowing that he got some the finest training in the world.
He said that I was not the hero was the kids.
He said, these kids on the ground, they didn't know
my rank or my age. They didn't know it was
his first assignment. Basically, they just know he's a professional,
he's had training, and he's here to help us. He
(13:50):
says that they were calm and that they were focused,
and that they all worked together, and that the kids
were the real heroes. Oh good story there.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
You're listening to Gary and Shannon on Demand from KFI AM.
Speaker 1 (14:04):
Six forty California's Gavin Newsom condemning what we saw yesterday.
We're going to get an update from Michael Monks from
KFI News about what went down in MacArthur Park. But
I think we had it correct yesterday when we talked
about the news unfolding reports about federal agents and military vehicles. Now,
(14:27):
Newsome and Karen Bass, from what I have heard thus far,
were up in arms about it being a military state
in MacArthur Park, descending upon LA. I think that this
had to do with National Guard members protecting people, i e.
Agents operating in the area, especially after what we saw
(14:50):
in McCallan, Texas yesterday morning with someone firing on agents.
They're doing their jobs. So we'll get an update from
Michael Monks on where we're at the You're not gonna
have to take your shoes off during TSA screenings at
certain US airports. We'll get the details on that as well.
But first, a love story. I mean, the news is
(15:13):
just heartbreaking from time to time, all this news about
Texas and that whole girls camp wiped out. I think
we have room in our hearts for a little love story.
So this is where i'd have Gary play music, but
he's not here. He decided to go to Maui for
a couple weeks. How dare he?
Speaker 2 (15:31):
Okay?
Speaker 1 (15:32):
This is the love story between Andrew McGowan and Shalin
You and it happened in Yellowstone. Andrew says the second
that he saw Shalin through a window, a shop window,
he thought, I'm gonna marry that girl. These are the
stories that you only read about in books or see
(15:53):
in movies that don't exist. This is a love story
that exists. Andrew and Shalin were strangers I had never
met before. They were from different worlds. It was a
summer of twenty thirteen. Andrew's twenty something. He's a college
student and he's on vacation in Yellowstone. He's with his
whole extended family, siblings, partner's nieces, nephews, parents, aunts, and uncles.
(16:18):
Kind of like what Gary's doing. He's in Hawaii with
extended family as well. I think he said there was
twenty seven of them. Anyway, Andrew same kind of vacation
at Yellowstone, he says the main goal for his weekend.
His main goal was to avoid any family drama or
complicated family dynamics and just catch a fish or two.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
I just want to go fishing in Yellowstone, he says.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
My parents described it as a family reunion. I was
just there mostly to go fishing with my brother. They
were from Utah and they went to Yellowstone for a
camping weekend every few years or so, and he and
his brother would always fish for trout while they were there.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
He says. We grew up with fishing. That's just the
way it was now.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
Shalin Girl was working in the Canyon Village, which was
right next to the campground where Andrew and his family
were staying. Andrew, by the way, grew up in a
conservative small town there in Utah, one of seven siblings,
large Mormon family. He was fresh off his mission trip
two years in the Philippines. Of course, this is a
rite of passage for young Mormons. You're volunteering, you're learning
(17:23):
the ways and the teachings. But while he's away, Andrew's
family had begun to question their hardcore Mormon doctrine life,
and his parents decided, in fact, to leave the church.
So he comes back from his mission trip. He's kind
of discombobulated with his family's decision, feeling disconnected. But they're
still close and they're still in this big family trip.
(17:46):
And while everyone's setting up camp, Andrew and his brother
go to the park's nearest general store to get their
fishing licenses for the weekend, and he looks through the
window and he sees Shalin inside. Now, Shalin is also
a twenty something and she's a student from Taiwan, and
she's working in Yellowstone for the summer, part of a
summer work program. She is studying for a degree in
(18:08):
geographic information. And she is on cloud nine working in
a national park for several weeks. She says it was magical,
a new experience. She had spent time away from Taiwan before,
but this was very special considering her interests in nature
and the like. Now, before Andrew enters the story spots
Shalin through the windows, and he's like, I have to
(18:30):
talk to her. I have to figure out a reason
to talk to her. She's not at the fishing license counter,
but I've got to talk to this girl. He says.
It was love at first sight for Shalin, not so much.
I think you find that from time to time. Guys
are very visual. They're like, I see something, I want
something that is mine.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
Girls it's a little bit more complicated.
Speaker 1 (18:50):
Right for her remembrance of it, she says, I just
remember a tall blonde guy bouncing up to me with
a grin on his face. He looks he's smiling really big,
and he looks like he froze. So the employees at
the store all were named tags, so they had their
name and then where they're from.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
So her said she was from Taiwan.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
Andrew's pretty good at languages, and he knows a little
bit of Mandarin. What he picked up tagalag Am I,
saying that correctly while living in the Philippines, dabbled in
Mandarin as part of a college language requirement. My goodness,
kids these days, they're so accomplished. So apparently remembers how
(19:28):
to say Mandarin. She says what came out of his
mouth was really poor mandarin. But anyway, he leaves and
he doesn't She doesn't think much of it. He goes
back to his brother's car and he's obsessed with it.
What am I going to do next? We've got our
fishing licenses, that's what he should be focusing on, his
(19:51):
excitement over fishing, but he's just like, what am I
to do about this girl? He can't stop thinking about Shalin.
All right, when we come back, we'll tell you how
he was able to woo the girl. All behind the counter,
not the fishing license counter.
Speaker 3 (20:03):
You're listening to Gary and Shannon on demand from KFI
AM six forty.
Speaker 1 (20:08):
We are in the middle of the love story between
Andrew McGowan and Shalin.
Speaker 3 (20:12):
You.
Speaker 1 (20:13):
They met at a Canyon Village store right next to
the campground, a campground in Yellowstone. For Andrew was love
at first sight. He saw that Shalin on her name
tag there was from Taiwan. That she spoke Mandarin. He
knew a little bit. He tried to woo her with that.
His Mandarin was awful. He secures he and his brother's
(20:35):
fishing licenses for that weekend, a family reunion type of
a weekend, but he can't stop thinking about Shalin. In fact,
he couldn't leave the parking lot. After exchanging a couple
words with her. He said, I'm going to marry that
girl when he first saw her, before even talking to her. Anyway,
he's in the parking lot and he's in the car
(20:55):
and he gets out of the car and he goes
back in and his brother's like, where you going?
Speaker 2 (21:00):
What is this?
Speaker 1 (21:02):
And he says He tries to say to her in Mandarin,
do you have a boyfriend? And she says, this sounds
ridiculous the way he put it in Mandarin. You know,
as translations are want to be, sometimes they don't come
out the right way. But she knew what he was
trying to say. She shook her head and said that
she was single. He asked if he could take her
(21:23):
out for dinner that night, and she's like, no, we're
in the middle of nowhere. Dinner sounds weird, Like that
sounds oddly formal. If you're at Yellowstone you want to
go to dinner? Ever we talk about you know, you
want some trail mix or something. That's the way to go.
But she was intrigued by this and intrigued by his initiative,
because you don't see this a lot, at least my
single friends say, you don't see guys take an initiative
(21:43):
like this a lot. So she's like, okay, well, if
you want to practice your Mandarin, because you need to,
we can go grab some ice cream. And she says
that her thought process at the time, I don't know
this guy. I'm here in the United States all by myself.
If we just sit in front of the store ice cream,
there's people around, I'll be safe to classic single woman, right,
(22:05):
assuming that whoever you're going on a date with is
going to.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Try to kill you. So they do it.
Speaker 1 (22:11):
At the time, Andrew borrows some clothes from his brother
because his own clothes smelled like trail and sweat, and
they go out. They have a nice little time. They
just they get along very well. She says at this
point it was more bonding than flirting. They're talking about
their different travels abroad. He's talking about how he picked
up a little bit of Mandarin, and it's just an
(22:34):
easy camaraderie there is She's kind of an introvert, so
it was nice to open up to someone they went
on hikes. He asks her if she wants to join
the family get togethers. She says, I didn't know what
peach cobbler was. I have a sweet tooth, he explained,
and I thought, Okay, well, of course I'm going to go.
So she essentially met his whole family on the very
(22:54):
first date. His parents took an immediate liking to her,
and he thinks it is probably because she wasn't in
the Mormon religion that they were in the process of
kind of distancing themselves with. She had never experienced an
evening like that back home in Taiwan, a very traditional
family she comes from, very protective. They would never let
her do anything like that. She's an adult, but in
(23:15):
Taiwan a lot of times it's like, oh, you're in
your twenties, you're still a kid. So she felt the
sense of freedom with Andrew and his family. They're at Yellowstone,
they're both still in their early twenties, though both still
at college, from opposite sides of the globe, so that
it's not clear what they're going to do as they're
both leaving Yellowstone, and he was like, let's make this work,
and she said, oh, let's kind of see what happens.
(23:37):
She knew that her family would disapprove, and they did.
But they began this long distance relationship and they send ims,
they organize video calls, their face timing. He's saving up
as much money as he can to buy a plane
ticket to Taiwan. They did not want her to be
with him. Did he graduate yet No? Does he own
(23:59):
his own house No, So the family was like, yeah,
this is just child's play at this point, you're just
playing around. This isn't serious. Andrew says, I see your concerns,
and I raise you. Essentially, he applies for a semester
abroad studying Mandarin at Taipei Normal University's Mandarin Training Center.
(24:19):
He rolls and rolls in January fifteenth, and as you
can imagine, that's when things become more serious.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
He moves in with her, and in.
Speaker 1 (24:27):
The summer of twenty fifteen, two years after they first met,
at Yellowstone, Andrew and Shalin a lope in the hills
above Utah. Very beautiful, very small, closest friends kind of
wedding where people are carrying up tables for food, blankets
for people to sit on, maybe twenty people. Special day,
but mixed emotions because Shalin's family was not there, and
(24:50):
then came the Chinese fortune teller. Shalin's mother at the
time was realizing, Okay, my daughter is not coming back
to me. So she goes to this fortune teller and
tells the fortune teller both of their birthdays, Shalan's birthday
and Andrew's birthday, and the Chinese fortune teller tells mom
(25:11):
they match really well. They're gonna have their differences, but
they'll always work it out. And so because of the
Chinese fortune teller, Shalan's Mom's.
Speaker 2 (25:20):
Like, okay, I guess they're okay.
Speaker 1 (25:23):
So in twenty sixteen, a year after they eloped, they
celebrated their marriage with a big party in Utah and
a lot of Shalan's family was there, Andrew's family was there,
the whole bit. They have since had two children, Andrew
and Shalin have They have since moved to Utah. From
(25:44):
Utah to California and he. Andrew says, yes, it was
love at first sight, but he stresses that their romance
was an active choice. That he says, the universe chose
them for each other, but they had to make the
choices to make it happen.
Speaker 2 (26:02):
They had to show the initiative. How much initiative did
he show? A lot? Guys, So you gotta take action.
You got to make things happen.
Speaker 1 (26:13):
Not a beautiful story and not a beautiful love story. See,
that's the kind of crap I wouldn't get away with.
If Gary was here, he would have been silent the
whole time.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
So it's like he's here.
Speaker 1 (26:21):
He had just been sitting there looking at me and
saying things like, well, the guy was just fresh off
his Mormon mission trip. Of course he's gonna fall in
love with the first girly sees. And I would say,
you have a point there that probably played into it
all right. Coming up next, Michael Monks joins us, we
will break down everything that happened in MacArthur Park yesterday.
(26:42):
Was it a military formation, was it a military state
