Gary & Shannon dive into the fallout of yesterday’s big vote on Proposition 50.   They unpack the hidden stakes for the next five years, why Governor Newsom spent hundreds of millions to force this measure, and how it erases the citizen-led redistricting amendment from 2008.    Plus: what Trump’s saying about California’s voting system, a mental escape to the Maldives, and why the Disney vs. YouTube TV media war is all tied up in this mess.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is Gary and Shannon and you're listening to kf
I AM six forty, the Gary and Shannon Show on
demand on the iHeartRadio app. If you're listening right now,
I just have one message for you. Yes, turn the
volume up. Why didn't hear that whole thing? That's that

(00:24):
joke does not land with you? I got it? Thank you,
Thank you everybody who paid attention to any bit of
news in the past twelve hours. You didn't hear that speech.
I need you, Donald Trump. I know you're listening, and
I've got four words for you. Turn up the volume
or turn the volume up is what he said, don

(00:48):
And I got to say, I'm glad you brought up
Gavin Newsom because Mom, Donni, Mom, Donnie, I should learn
his name, because I don't think he's going anywhere, y'all, Mom, Donnie.
And the crowd that he has and the groundswell of
love that he has is something Gavin Newsom will never have.

(01:10):
It's the difference between a politician who can galvanize I e.
Barack Obama and a politician who is unbelievable as a
human ie Gavin Newsom. There's just a threshold. Gavin's never
going to be able to jump over. And it's the
likability threshold, it's the people are passionate about you threshold.

(01:35):
He doesn't have it, He's never gonna have it. If
he had it, we'd know by now. That's unfortunate for him.
But this guy, Mom Donnie, he's got it.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
There's an interesting dynamic here as well, where because Mom
Donnie is generating the headlines for winning the mayor's race
in New York City at the same time the Gavin
Newsom gets this big pedestal win in Prop fifty. Mom
Donnie's the one who's getting the spotlight. Mom Donnie's the
one who's getting the front cover of the New York Post.

(02:05):
Mam Donnie's the one who's going to be talked about repeatedly,
if nothing, I mean outside of the politics that he
brings to it, which is should be scary to some people,
this idea of democratic socialist taking over the largest city
in this country.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
Gavin Newsom does not get what he wants.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
I mean, he gets he gets notoriety, he gets the win,
he gets the ability to use this as you know,
going into the twenty twenty eight election. But right now
he's not the one generating the headline. It's like a
quarterback room. Okay, it's like a depth chart. You're QB two.
You're told you're the future. You're the future.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
You're doing all the things you're putting in, all the legwork,
you're doing, getting all the reps. You're you've been here
for three years, You're you are the future. And then
all of a sudden, somebody comes in that quarterback room
and you know that that's cue one. That's Mom Donnie
compared to Gavin Newsom.

Speaker 3 (03:03):
Yeah, yeah, I don't.

Speaker 1 (03:05):
I mean, Gavin Newsom's a game manager. Mom Donnie just
took the ceiling and raised it one hundred feet and
all the things that he's saying, all the socialist things
that he's saying, that's just the very tip of a
very deep iceberg of ideology that that does not work
in this country, but is very popular right now.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Well because of the because of the free part that,
like you said, the top of the iceberg is you
get free stuff, you get free food, you get free
bus rides, you get you get the money from the
taxes of the top one percent of the people. It's
going to be spread around and it's free for you
and you get these you know, the living wage and
all this sort of like all of these great fluffy things,

(03:46):
but the bottom two thirds of that is gutting how
capitalism works in the city that defines capitalism in this world.
The free markets were born in New York City.

Speaker 1 (04:00):
There's a vibe in New York City, and there always
has been. It's a great place for young people to flourish,
to get their sea legs, their social legs, to figure
it all out, to figure out where they're going professionally.
But there's always been a vibe of oh, bless your heart,
and that comes from the people that the city has
built on, and those are capitalists. So have your fun

(04:21):
socialist youth population. It's so sweet the way y' all
do that. But really, what works in this city and
everywhere in this country is capitalism.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
When we come back, there's all kinds of stuff to
talk to the results of last night's election PROP fifty past.
We'll talk about that Governor Newsom's launch basically for twenty
twenty eight. That's kind of been hamstrung a bit by
Moro Zoran Moron Zoran Mamdani's victory in New York City.
But also there was one statistic in one poll that

(04:55):
I saw that blew my mind about Prop fifty and
if you voted in favor of it, it's important to
hear this number.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Did you see the Rick Cruso posts this morning? No,
and I've been waiting to see if I forgot to
circle back and check it out to see if he
was hacked. I did not know he was in favor
of this. He was, I do remember, Oh yeah, because
he posted this morning. I just pulled it up. It
was a good night in California when Prop fifty one
and protected our rights in Congress. California was going to

(05:24):
unfairly lose power in DC, which is why I was
glad to play a part in helping get Prop fifty
pass by reaching out to voters in LA. I hope
we can now move past political process fights and fix
the many problems in our nation, state, and city. And
every comment on Rick Cruzo socials is you did what now?

Speaker 3 (05:41):
R you supported this because.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
It's this short sighted view of well, we need to
get what we get, we need to get what we
can now, without respect to the future of politics, the
future of this country, the future of political division. That
to me is just an awful. I like Rick Cruso,
would have voted him for voted for him for mayor

(06:07):
if I've lived in the city of la But man,
this was a huge misstep on his part. Anyway, we'll
talk about that. We have a chance for you to
win one thousand bucks. We have all kinds of stuff.
We have what you watch on Wednesday.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
Coming up.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
We have Justin Warsham joining us to talk parenting later
in the show. It's big show, big show, big show.

Speaker 1 (06:22):
It's huge.

Speaker 3 (06:23):
Just a tip of the.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
I'm so excited. I always forget when Justin's coming in.
It's my favorite part of the week. He's such a delight.

Speaker 4 (06:31):
You're listening to Gary and Shannon on demand from KFI
AM six forty.

Speaker 5 (06:37):
Hey, good morning, Gary and Shannon. That was quite the
amazing night the Democrats had last night. We could all
thank Donald Trump. Shannon. I just want to say thank you.
You just proved that Gary has no business talking about
politics when you said turn the volume up, and he
was clueless. He had no idea what the hell you
were talking about. I don't watch that kind of stuff. Yeah,

(07:00):
did you sit there and you report on it all day? Gary?
And we're supposed to believe and listen to what you
have to say, open your eyes and do your job.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
He was what, okay, quick gas go around. Did I
say I don't watch that type of stuff?

Speaker 2 (07:13):
I just said I didn't hear mom Donnie say that
in the speech last night.

Speaker 1 (07:17):
Let quick gas go around for that kind sir, and
you're welcome, and you're welcome. That guy's highly critical of
both of us multiple.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
Times a day.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
What is he angry about?

Speaker 3 (07:30):
Let's see angry.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
This is what is he actually angry about. Is it
he opened the milk this morning and realized no good?

Speaker 6 (07:40):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (07:41):
Did he maybe step on something that drew a whole
pile of lego? You step on a whole pile of lego?
Car trouble?

Speaker 6 (07:52):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (07:53):
You know, what is it? What is he really upset about?

Speaker 3 (07:56):
Him?

Speaker 1 (07:56):
Back, Oliver, you go first.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
Let's he upset about.

Speaker 1 (07:59):
I don't know if you guys know about this, but
we had that daylight savings. Oh gosh, yeah, yeah, yeah,
he's probably still grappling. Well, this is day one, two three.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
That's right when it hits.

Speaker 1 (08:10):
Oh man, that is when it hits. Because you look
around you're like, what time is it? Yeah, that's the
worst day. On the on the daylight Saving cycle, Amy,
what do you think?

Speaker 3 (08:20):
What's he upset about? Oh, the guy who is the guy.

Speaker 1 (08:23):
Who yells at Gary. What's he upset about? What's you
really upset about?

Speaker 7 (08:28):
He's upset about redistricting.

Speaker 1 (08:31):
Oh you think so.

Speaker 7 (08:38):
I'm pretty two hundred and eighty million dollars it's not
going to do it.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
I think he's upset that three I at list has
been nothing has been nothing. Didn't you see the new
story it broke up?

Speaker 2 (08:51):
What those are baby ships that came out of the
mother ship didn't break up?

Speaker 7 (08:55):
And it also has little volcanic explosions going on. What
you've been looking on your Instagram?

Speaker 3 (08:59):
I have it on our instagram. Well my instagram? Oh
you're oh, I will run.

Speaker 7 (09:05):
I don't know why it's showing up on mine. You
guys are the ones who talk about it. I never
even talk about it.

Speaker 1 (09:09):
I Sha, what do you say?

Speaker 2 (09:11):
He's upset about the fact that it was nutty peanut butter,
not smooth and creamy like he's used to.

Speaker 1 (09:16):
So his wife got the wrong stuff or a husband.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
Or whatever whatever lies.

Speaker 1 (09:22):
I think he's upset that baseball season's over and it's
one hundred days till pictures and catchers report, and it's
kind of a dark time for baseball fans. And I
think he's upset about that.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
I think you're right.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
I also think he's a Padres fan that hated watching
that World Series. His name Anne, and his name might
be Anne, but thanks for calling, all right?

Speaker 8 (09:46):
Prop fifty After poking the bear, this bear roared with
an unprecedented turnout in a special election with an extraordinary result.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
The seven sixty four percent sent to thirty six percent
appears to be the basic final numbers for Prop. Fifty,
which now allows for redistricting before we usually redistrict, and
in fact takes it away from the independent citizen commission
that was redistricting that we gave the power to before

(10:19):
and puts it back in the legislature. A couple things
about this that have been hard to swallow for a
lot of people. Number One is this reverses what voters
did in two thousand and eight and twenty ten, which
was developed these independent commissions'll take the power of redistricting

(10:40):
away from the legislature because it had become too common
for politicians to choose voters as opposed to the other
way around.

Speaker 3 (10:50):
And there are a couple things. The other aspect of this.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
Is that a lot of people did this vote, or
went into this vote on P. Fifty not thinking about
future repercussions about taking the redistricting away from the commission,
giving him back to the legislature. They were just voting
to try to flip double birds to Donald Trump because
of what happened in Texas. It was wrong to do

(11:18):
in Texas. That doesn't mean it gives California the right
to do this, but we chose to do it anyway.
Here's where the poll number that I wanted to point out,
and it proves my point about most people were doing
this simply as a way to get back at the
Trump administration.

Speaker 3 (11:36):
Some ninety percent of people.

Speaker 2 (11:38):
Say the best way to draw district lines is via
an independent commission, ninety two percent.

Speaker 3 (11:48):
This is the way they talked about it on Fox
last night.

Speaker 9 (11:50):
We asked the voters and how they would actually like
to see these lines drawn. The irony of this trace
is that nine out of ten voters even more so,
said they'd like to see this done by a non
partisan commission, not the party in power. Well, that was
preempted with the outcome of this.

Speaker 2 (12:09):
Vote, ninety two percent of people said they would prefer
to have congressional districts drawn by an independent commission, but
voted in favor of this to the tune of sixty
four to thirty two.

Speaker 1 (12:23):
It wasn't about the redistricting it it's not. It was
a middle finger.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Yes, what it was this is There was a column
in the La Times today by Mark barbera Barbarak, I
believe how you say his name, no fan of the
Trump administration, no fan at all, and he said if
proposition plays out as intended, this could make things worse

(12:47):
about the speaking about the political division in the country,
heightening the country's polarization, increasing the animosity in Washington, that
is rotting our government and politics from the inside out.
And he goes on to say that the upshot is
that even more politicians now have the luxury of picking
their voters as opposed to voters picking their politicians. And

(13:11):
if we do it in California, they'll do it in Illinois,
if they have any jerrymandering space left, they'll do it
in New York.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
They'll do it in all these other places.

Speaker 2 (13:19):
And we just go down this road of harsh political division.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
But at least you get what you want in your day.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
It's just it's infantile and childish to think that way
towards the future of the country.

Speaker 1 (13:34):
All right, Coming up next, more of your election coverage. Also,
we have an update on the plane explosion in Louisville
and your porn companies may be suing you. That's right,
true story. Porn companies are going after their own users.
Gary and Shannon will continue.

Speaker 4 (13:54):
You're listening to Gary and Shannon on demand from KFI
Am six forty.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
We always welcome your feedback. If you are listening on
the app. On the iHeart app to KFI, there is
a little red button with a white microphone. Just tap
that and you'll leave us a quick message. I do
have some developing news that we're going to have to
dig into a little bit.

Speaker 4 (14:20):
Henrie Di Carlo mentioned you guys in your show, just
thought you'd want to know what.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
Apparently Henry Di Carlo dropped some gas knowledge on the
Old Morning show.

Speaker 3 (14:30):
Today We need.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
Oh my gosh, that would just make my whole week. Yeah,
that would be incredible. Apparently I was just following up
on on Amy's information about three i AT lists. Apparently
NASA has some pictures of this detailed pictures that it's
refusing to release, refusing to share certain camera images that

(15:00):
may have provided existence of the cosmic bodies, non commentary characteristics,
such as a tale that points toward and not away
from the sun as is standard.

Speaker 7 (15:14):
Did you see the one where it's it was sucking
energy off the sun. Yeah, I'm not sure. It might
be AI, it could be all right.

Speaker 1 (15:24):
We'll get into it. Ashley Fields with News Nation is
with us. She's on the East coast and breaking down
this what seems like a monumental shift there in New York. Ashley.

Speaker 6 (15:35):
Yes, last night we saw zor Mom Donnie win the
New York City mayoral election, becoming the second Democratic socialist
to lead the most populous city in the nation in
an upset for Republicans, independent candidate, former Governor Andrew Cuomo
and other establishment politicians.

Speaker 1 (15:53):
So for people who are outside of New York, maybe
they're waking up, going, all right, I've heard about this
Mom Donnie guy. What is the all about?

Speaker 6 (16:00):
Let us know, Mom Donnie is all about economic freedom.
He talks frequently about endorsing citywide rent, freeze's city run
grocery stores, free childcare, and free transportation for all, which
is a major part of his campaign platform base. It
earned him a wealth of support from voters across New York.

(16:23):
I believe over one million voters cast to their ballot
for Mom Donnie, which is the first time in a
long time that something like that has happened.

Speaker 2 (16:33):
I'm a little bit floored by this. I'm surprised the
numbers were as huge as they were. The polls actually
showed this a little closer than the final election results,
where I think Andrew Cuomo was within about six or
seven points as of late in the race, but he
won by eight points.

Speaker 3 (16:54):
Where's Cuomo?

Speaker 4 (16:55):
Now?

Speaker 3 (16:55):
What kind of speech did he give last night when
he knew that he lost?

Speaker 6 (17:01):
Last night? Cuomo conceded he credited Mom Donnie for running
a great race. Some of his supporters sort of booed
when he said that. However, he told them, you know,
not to jeer about Mom Donnie and that, you know,
to last night was his night. Some people, including former
New York Mayor Bill Deblasio, said that one of the
reasons Cuomo sort of lost support at the last minute

(17:22):
was because he was endorsed by President Trump. He predicted
that about seventy five percent of voters received that as
negatives for Cuomo, and so last night, Mom, donniejan and
health firm to his voter base.

Speaker 1 (17:36):
Does he have any day one promises things that he
wants to get done right away there in New York.

Speaker 6 (17:43):
I think those three things were sort of his pop priorities.
Free transportation, free childcare, and citywide rent freezes. Rent freezes
might take a little bit longer, and so will free childcare.
But while serving as a New York City Assemblyman, he
sort of pushed a legislative idea for free transportation, which
is one of the first things I think we could

(18:04):
see him implement in the start of his new administration.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
All right, well, we will see how this socialism experience
experiment goes. Ashley Fields News Nation, thank you so much
for your reporting.

Speaker 6 (18:16):
Thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (18:17):
There is a lot more to what happened last night
in New York City. There's also, of course, the governor's
races in New Jersey and Virginia that we'll talk about
when we come back. But we still got to figure
out what exactly what exactly Henry de Carlo said about us.

Speaker 3 (18:32):
I'm KTLA this morning.

Speaker 1 (18:33):
Hey, Gary and Shannon.

Speaker 4 (18:35):
That guy was totally out of line.

Speaker 1 (18:37):
I love making fun of Gary, but I make fun
of Gary because he's a d bag, not because of
his reporting skills. That is you, guys, this is not nice.
This is not the way we want to start off
a Wednesday. Okay, if you don't have anything nice to say,
don't say anything at all. It's a golden rule.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
I'll do that.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
I'm the golden rule. Did I get that right? No,
golden one.

Speaker 3 (19:01):
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
So it's in the same ballpark it is. It's like,
what's the other one called silver rule or some crop sure.

Speaker 3 (19:12):
Called the mom rule. Yeah, all right, we'll come back
more of this.

Speaker 4 (19:18):
You're listening to Gary and Shannon on demand from KFI
AM six forty.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
I'm going to be so protective when your wife leaves
you and you try to date.

Speaker 3 (19:34):
Wait, do you know have you talked to her?

Speaker 6 (19:37):
That is?

Speaker 3 (19:38):
What do you mean?

Speaker 1 (19:40):
I should have said if she ever would leave you,
what she wouldn't do? Yeah, but if that happen, if
you know, I will be very protective.

Speaker 3 (19:52):
I appreciate that.

Speaker 1 (19:54):
So hold on, I gotta play this so everybody knows.
Since I know you're watching, listen to this crowd what
wars for you? Turn the volume up, listen to this.
He's a beatle, He's a beatle. You know what this

(20:18):
reminds me of the Beatles? No, this reminds me of
just because it wasn't my time, probably close enough to
new kids on the block for me, that would be
whether it's reminiscent of you know what this reminds me
of is the fervor and the passion of the people
that we met on the streets of Philadelphia.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
For Bernie Sanders, Yes, yeah, now that's that's a good
point they had going for them, The feeling of being
shut out of that process that was That would have
been twenty sixteen, and that was when Bernie Sanders was
pulling very well for Democrats, but it wasn't his turn.

(21:01):
We've talked about how Hillary Clinton was the one who
was going to ascend to the throne, whether the Democrats
liked it or not, whether the Democrat Party members liked
it or not, she was the one that had been crowned.
They were going to do everything they could to make
sure that she was the one who became the nominee.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
But Mom, Donnie has a couple things Bernie did not have.
He has youth fifty years on him, yes, and he
has a New York City and you know who this
may also play well with. I don't freak out. I'm
just working through something in my head. But when I

(21:40):
read JD. Vance's book after Trump was elected the first time,
and I saw the population Trump really hit with, it
was the population that hated the political elite. It was
the population of people whose communities had been left behind
by all the rich people on the left and right coasts,
the left coasts. I should say, whether it's New York

(22:00):
in LA, all these elite prep school type politicians who
forgot about who built this country, who this country's was
built on the backs of, whether it's coal or what
have you. This may ring true with them of it's

(22:21):
about time that the rich people pay for us to
get ours. And I don't know if that's the case.
And I don't know if the people that voted for
Trump because they felt forgotten by this country have felt
now unforgotten by Trump's two terms. But this guy's message
may mean something to somebody who feels like they've been

(22:42):
screwed over by the political elite their whole lives.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
But it's not a new message, no, I mean, it's
a message that resonates for one hundred and fifty years
in this country. Is there's people who say that the
government always leans towards the richest and gives them all
the parson.

Speaker 1 (22:59):
But remember when we talked to the Bernie Sanders people
in Philadelphia, they were not going to vote for Hillary
for a couple reasons. Number one, she screwed them over.
She and the DNC screwed them over, shut them out.
And number two, we talked to a lot of people
that were going to vote for Trump that didn't like it,

(23:19):
but liked what he was bringing to the table over
what Hillary would bring.

Speaker 2 (23:24):
And that's what I think was the most surprising about
those conversations was they found more in common with or
more I would say in common, more parallels perhaps with
what Trump's attitude was before he became president. Then they
felt with Hillary Clinton, right, h.

Speaker 1 (23:46):
I mean, Mom, Donnie might be boxing out you know
in the paint Democrats period, the way that we thought
about Democrats.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
Well, there was a phrase that Gavin Newsom talked about
in his speech last night. He said, for the first
time in a while, Democrats are on their toes as
opposed to on their heels, that they're now leaning forward,
that this win in New York City, the win in Virginia,
the win in New Jersey, and the governor's races, this
prop fifty win, that he sees that as the Democratic

(24:15):
Party now leaning forward in terms of fighting back against
Donald Trump. But he Gavin Newsom and Zorn Mamdani, if
you want to count those two guys as sort of
the leaders right now of the party based on the
results from last night, they're not the same person, and
there's a lot of things they're going to have to
hash out in terms of what the Democratic Party is

(24:36):
going to stand for. Because the clock immediately started ticking
on the midterms immediately. If not, I mean it started
before that. But now that's what we have to look
forward to. I mean, in California coming up in June,
we've got the primary election for governor.

Speaker 3 (24:53):
That is a significant thing.

Speaker 2 (24:55):
But for the country more significantly, we've got the midterms
coming up just a year from now.

Speaker 1 (25:01):
All right, coming up next. Big stories of the day
Supreme Court taking up Donald Trump's tariffs. Are they copasetic
with the Constitution or not. They're going to dive into that.
We've got an update on what happened in Louisville with
that ups plane explosion and porn companies going after their
own users. Be careful, and you know, people are getting

(25:22):
these these emails that they're being sued for and they're
listing the titles of the videos that these people have downloaded.
Could you imagine the horror. We'll talk about it all
coming up next on Gary and Shannon.
