(00:31):
Good morning. This is your wakeup call for Thursday, September twenty feet.
I'm Amy King. Here's what's comingup on wake up Call. The
Hollywood writers strike could soon be over. Negotiators met yesterday, they're meeting again
today and there are rumors that adeal is not far off. President Zelinski's

Of course, he's going to beasking for support more money for his
war with Russia. The powerball jackpotis going up. It's getting up there.
No winner last night means Saturday's jackpotis going to be up to an
estimated seven hundred twenty five million dollars. What would you do with all that
(01:17):
money? Maybe go buy an islandor something. At six oh five,
it's handle on the news. Kevinda Leone wants to stick around. He
didn't resign after the leaked tape scandalat City Hall and now says he's going
to run for reelection to the CityCouncil for LA in twenty twenty four.
Here are some of the stories comingout of the KFI twenty four hour newsroom.
(01:40):
The Hollywood writers strike could soon beover. CNBC says the writers and
studios are close to a deal andthat an agreement would likely be announced today.
A statement released yesterday only said thatthey were negotiators. Writers said they
will remain on picket lines as theWGA meets with major production companies in May,
(02:04):
bringing Hollywood to a halt, withactors joining them just weeks after Business
Rep. Friatzi, Orange County BradMarlow says he hopes both sides can come
to an agreement so everyone can getback to work. I think if you
know production companies are listening. Ithink any of them that have ashold they
know this is wrong. You knowwhat they're up to with SAG and with
(02:25):
the writers. Writers say they're stillskeptical after yesterday's meeting with producers, saying
it was more of a lecture.Chris Adler k if I News. The
school board in Moreno Valleys voted tofire it's superintendent. The decision follows a
twenty seven million dollars settlement with thefamily of a boy who died after he
(02:45):
was sucker punched by bullies at school. The boys family has complained to school
officials about the ongoing harassment, butsaid nothing was ever done. The La
County DA's office has filed a murdercharge against the man accused of the shooting
death of a sheriff's deputy. Thecriminal complaint says Kevin Salazar used to twenty
(03:06):
two caliber revolver when he killed RyanClinckenbroomer last Saturday, and how did Salazar
get the guys? All we cansay at this point about any weapon is
that we believe there was a purchasemade in the weeks before this crime occurred.
That's Deputy DA Mike Blake. Yesterday, Salazar pleaded not guilty by reason
of insanity. The DA says ifSalazar's convicted, he'll ask for life in
(03:28):
prison without parole at the Hall ofJustice. Steve Gregory k if I News.
Some people on the Rancho Palace VerdesPeninsula say they're worried about their homes
on unstable ground. Nearly a dozenhomes in Rolling Hills Estates were destroyed by
a landslide almost two months ago.People in the Seaview neighborhood of Palace Vertes
say the ground underneath some homes hasalso moved and huge cracks have appeared on
(03:53):
some properties. They also say thestreets and sidewalks are shifting. The HP
organized Retail Theft Task Force says ithas recovered more than two hundred thousand dollars
worth of stolen stuff in LA andhas arrested ten people. Officials say the
stolen items were being sold at swapmeets around LA. They say the operation
(04:14):
was being run out of somebody's backyardand the merchandise was kept under tents and
at box truck house. McCarthy hasreportedly outlined a new short term plan to
fund the government, but it's stillunclear is if he has enough votes to
actually pass the plan. Lawmakers haveonly nine days left to take action.
(04:36):
One of McCarthy's biggest critics for thegovernor, Matt Gates, called McCarthy Week
yesterday, accusing the House speaker ofquote lying like a dead dog. ABC's
Justin Finch says conservative Republicans have beendemanding deeper spending cuts and have stricter border
policies. And for those of youwith Champagne wishes and Kavier dreams. The
(04:57):
powerball jackpots going up after no onematched all six winning numbers from last night's
drawing. The next drawing Saturday isgoing to be worth an estimated seven hundred
twenty five million dollars. The jackpotwas last one in July. Someone in
California has a ticket worth one pointeight one point zero eight billion dollars.
It is five oh six on WakeUp Call. Let's say good morning now
to ABC's Stephen Portnoy. Stephen.Attorney General Merrick Garland testified before the House
(05:24):
Judiciary Committee yesterday. Tell us aboutwhat happened. Yeah. He spent several
hours before the geop Control Panel, first time sitting under Republican control, before
the House Judiciary Committee, taking questions, and many of the questions from Republicans
focused on what they say is atwo tier system of justice, with the
Justice Department prosecuting Donald Trump, thepresident's rival, and they say protecting Hunter
(05:47):
Biden, the president's son. MerrickGarland responded in a prepared statement saying that
his department applies to the law evenlyand won't be intimidated, and this is
the quote. Our job is notto take orders from the President, from
Congress, or from anyone else aboutwho or what to criminally investigate. Many
of the questions focused on the investigationbeing led by David Weiss, the special
(06:10):
counsel based in Delaware who's been bringingcharges now against Hunter Biden, the president
son in a plea agreement that fellapart of the summer. We've been talking
about it for several weeks, andMerrick Garland said that he's left it to
David Weiss to decide what charges tobring, and when he said he has
not had any direct involvement in theHunter Biden case, He's not intruded,
(06:30):
not interfered, and not even triedto find out what it is that David
Weiss knows. And that was frustratingto members of the panel because they were
seeking particular answers about decisions that theJustice Department is made, not just under
Merrick Garland's direction, but also duringthe period in which Donald Trump was president,
and Garland frustrated members of the committeebecause he was not willing or able
(06:53):
to provide answers to those questions. Now, what's interesting is the panel Chairman
Jim Jordan, came out of thehearing to say that he acts that David
Weiss, the Special Counsel, willhimself appear before the panel sometime next month.
We would he have to say, well, I don't know, because
he's overseeing an ongoing investigation where hisoffice is bringing criminal charges against Hunter Biden.
(07:15):
In fact, in my understanding isHunter Biden lives in southern California.
And yesterday the judge overseeing the initialproceedings in the gun charges had been brought
against Hunter Biden related to his purchaseof a pistol at a time he was
a confirmed or admitted drug addict.Hunter Biden asked that that initial appearance that
arraignment be done over video conference, and yesterday the judge said nope. Over
(07:39):
my twelve years on the bench,he said, I'm not aware absent the
pandemic, of any circumstance where adefendant in a criminal case has been permitted
to plead virtually. So, misterBiden, you are expected to fly across
the country and come into the courtroomand enter that not guilty plea in person.
That's supposed to happen a week fromTuesday, October three is in California.
(08:01):
No, that's in Delaware. Oh, that's back in Delaware. So
he's in California, and that's whyhe's saying, Oh, I don't want
to appear in person. It's beenreported that Hunter Biden lives in Malibu,
and he asked that, because ofthe security involved and the need to fly
across the country, if it couldpossibly be done when he could just say
those two words not guilty via videoconference, and the judge said no,
okay, So I guess Hunter's gota plane trip in his future. And
(08:24):
as far as this committee hearings, what's next for them? Well, I
mean, look, the committee is, this was an oversight hearing, So
I don't know that they're going tocall Merrick Garland again. I think it
Republicans generally are going to try topursue this, and we know they're going
to pursue their own investigation into thepresident Sun's business dealings. Next Thursday,
a week from today, the HouseOversight Committee begins its impeachment inquiry with a
(08:48):
public hearing on the contours of impeachmentthe areas of financial and foreign lobbying laws
that they allege Hunter Biden may haveviolated, and they're going to subpoena Hunter
Biden's bank records to see if there'sany information there that might be helpful to
the investigation. But so far,and we have to keep saying it,
they have not demonstrated that there's beena wire transfer, any actual cash disbursement
(09:09):
from Hunter Biden or entities controls tothe person that he apparently called the big
guy in his text. And thequestion is whether that was just talk or
whether there's proof that money was actuallychanging hands into Joe Biden's accounts, And
so far Republicans have not been ableto find it. Oh the tangled webs
we weave. Stephen Portnoy, thankyou so much for your assistance in untangling
(09:31):
things. Have a great day. Here are some more of the stories coming
out of the KFI twenty four hournewsroom. A man from the San Fernando
Valley has been sentenced to more thansix years in prison for stealing nearly two
million dollars from banks in a checkfraud scheme. The guy pleaded guilty in
April. The US Attorney's office saysthe scheme also involved the man's wife,
brother in law, and other familymembers. A high school student in Temecula
(09:52):
has started handing out Pride flags toprotest the school district's policy against them.
The school board decided earlier this monththat only state and US flags can be
flown and at schools. Board memberssay they are not anti anything, but
the classroom is not a place forpersonal political beliefs. San Bernardino County Sheriff's
(10:13):
deputies have been involved in a shootingwhile answering a burglary call in Hysperia the
break The break in was reported aroundseven last night. The Sheriff's department says
the shooting happened when deputies got there. It's not clear if anyone was hit,
but a deputy has apparently been takento the hospital. A fight over
a girl has led to a stabbingat Mount San Antonio College in Walnut.
(10:35):
It happened just before noon yesterday. The injured man was taken to the hospital.
Another man has been taken into custody. Neighbors living where a small plane
crashed into a home or nearly crashedinto a home in Compton say the city
needs to make changes to the airport. Deborah Lindsay says planes fly dangerously close
(10:56):
to power lines and homes and ashas the city for years to act.
Somebody need to help us around here. I didn't save meet us in our
neighbors. This is too long.Too long, Okay, too long.
City Councilman Jonathan Bowers visited the crashsite on one hundred and fifty ninth Street
(11:16):
yesterday, saying the city is addressingairport safety. The NTSB and FAA are
trying to figure out what caused theplane to come down. Automakers are laying
off more employees because of the UAWstrike. Contract talks between the union and
the Big three automakers are still ongoing. Practice pickets have started around the country,
(11:37):
including at the Stillantis headquarters near Detroit. That company sent workers at its
factory in Perrysburg, Ohio, homethis week and is expecting to layoff employees
in Kokomo, Indiana. GM hasalso sent two thousand employees home in Kansas
City. Ukraine's President Zelenski scheduled tomeet with President Biden at the White House.
(11:58):
He's also planning to meet with Republicanand Democratic leaders to make his case
for getting more aid from the USfor the war with Russia. There were
close to seven hundred attempts to banlibrary books during the first eight months of
this year. The American Library Associationsaid this week those attempts targeted more than
nineteen hundred titles. That's twenty percentmore than the first eight months of twenty
(12:22):
twenty two. The association said mostof the titles that were targeted this year
were written by or about people ofcolor or members of the LGBTQ plus community.
Right now, let's say good morningto ABC's Jim Ryan. Jim AI
is a scary proposition for some people, but in this instance, it could
(12:43):
help save veterans lives. I wantto hear all about this very much.
So there's a company called clear ForceSammy. It's based in Virginia and part
of its mission is to try toprevent suicides among veterans. In fact,
the company has run essentially by peoplewho have in the military. So this
company uses artificial intelligence. What itdoes it looks at public records available from
(13:05):
the CDC, from the Census Bureau, from other sources to look at the
individual economic stability, substance abuse trends, relationships, criminal and legal contacts of
various communities, including veterans communities. Then working with organizations that provide services to
(13:26):
veterans local organizations, and the vaIT studies this using artificial intelligence, studies
the data to see who might beat risk, forwarding that information that onto
veteran Services organization, which then canreach out to those individual veterans. So
if there's a local veterans groups contactsof veterans, says I understand you might
(13:46):
be having some issues, so you'vegot some challenges going, the veteran then
has the option to say either youknow, I really am, or to
say no, I'm doing well, thanks a lot, no problem. So
it's an interesting use of artificial intelligenceand machine learning that this company is is
putting to use here to try tocut into a real tragedy. Veterans,
it's thought, are about one anda half times more likely to take their
(14:09):
own lives than people who have neverserved in the military. Mean, I
think that this is such an importantthing because we know that like twenty two
people a day or actually it's sixteena day are killing themselves. And if
there's any way to help, youknow, identify what's causing that or people
(14:31):
who are extra at risk, Ithink that's great. Is there any concern
about like hip HIPPO violations. Well, yes, by the way, it's
sixteen service members every day who tooktheir own lives in twenty twenty, not
overall, but six thousand of themsince twenty since two thousand and one.
But you're right, privacy is amajor concern. That's why this company and
others like it are using publicly availabledata. They're not digging into personal medical
(14:54):
records or something like that that wouldviolate HIPPA. So yes, they're our
privacy concerns. This company and othersthat are trying to help veterans, you
know, or do their best totry to preserve that privacy. But it's
it's a real paradix. You know, you're dealing with personal issues with deep,
private and life altering, potentially lifeending crises. So how do you
(15:18):
measure that? How do you weighthat out to try to reach out to
somebody, give them some help, offer them help at least, and then
you know it to and then backaway. It's a real quandary. Yeah,
Well, with all the talk ofyou know, armageddon for from AI,
I think that this is such agreat way that it can be applied
(15:39):
and hopefully it'll save lives. Myuncle's a veteran, My brothers a veteran,
And you know, I mean ithit home for so many people listening
right now because so many people eitherserved or know somebody who's served. And
and a lot of times those strugglesare very private and we don't see them
exactly and and so and you know, the whole military experience is like that.
And so who better to unders standsomething like this then a military veteran.
(16:03):
And that's why this company, thisClear Force company, has so many
veterans who are in leadership positions. But you're right, and the PSA that
are a minute ago about the nineeight eight Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, and
it's crucial information. There's also thenine eight eight lifeline dot org website.
Yeah, Jim Ryan, thank youso much for your time and uplifting news
today. We like that. Thanks, Amie. All right, and I
(16:25):
wanted to remind you too that wehave a friend of the show. It's
actor Josh Plassy from I Carle. He's running twenty two miles a day for
twenty two days wearing a twenty twopound ruck sack to raise awareness and try
to prevent veteran suicide. We hadhim on the show a couple of weeks
ago, actually about three weeks ago. He's almost did the end of his
journey. His goal was to raisefifty thousand dollars for veteran suicide prevention programs.
(16:48):
You can take a look at hisjourney. I've been watching him along
the way. It's pretty cool. He's just running all over the country.
It's at at Josh Plassy, JoshPlas or at Stop Veterans Suicide. There
are also links to donate to helpthe costs. Let's get back to some
of the stories coming out of theKFI twenty four hour newsroom. And employee
(17:10):
a massage parlor in Riverside has shota suspected robber. Police say two men
tried to rob the place last night. Both took off after the shooting.
One of them ended up at anearby market and was taken to the hospital.
He's in critical condition. People livingin Compton, where a small plane
crash say the city's airport needs safetyimprovements. The crash happened just feet from
(17:33):
the Compton wood Lee Airport, wherepilots travel without a control tower. Monica
Dykes lives near the airport and saysthere was a similar plane crash in the
area a couple weeks back. Weneed some attention to our airport because it
is not the pilot's fault or anybody'sfault. It's just that we need some
resources and some upgrades. The pilotreported only minor injuries. What caused the
(17:55):
plane to come down yesterday morning isstill under investigation, but officials say engine
failure is suspected. Chris Adler KFINews. Long Beach Police are hosting a
safety meeting this afternoon, two daysafter a man died after scaling the fence
at an elementary school. McKinley ElementarySchool was put on lockdown after a man
with a sledgehammer tried to get ontocampus. He died after a confrontation with
(18:18):
some adults on campus, though policehave yet to say exactly how he died.
Police say the man was pulled downfrom the fence and was detained by
a group of men. So everyweek, starting this week, we're going
to be doing what we're calling aBOO Preview, and that's to give you
a little look into some of theevents that are going on around the Southland.
(18:40):
We're going to look at big eventsand some smaller events. Some creepy
Crawley events, some spooky events, some family events, and some really scary
events. And what is Halloween withoutHalloween time at the Disneyland Resort. And
you know I'm a huge Disney fananyway, so it made sense for us
to start there. I got achance to talk with Knees Norma Perez in
Disney California Adventure. We were rightnext to the iconic statue of the Headless
(19:07):
Horseman at the end of Buena VistaStreet. So, Norma, there are
ride overlays, there are special menus, there are decorations, and it all
spells Halloween time. Tell us aboutit. You are so excited celebrating Halloween

cute is totally dark and it's you'resaving brood. You just see a little

who is a giant Mickey with abig smile and as you exit, it's
a big wink. And of coursethere's a lot of Punkins down Main Street,
(20:38):

Nightmare before Christmas, thirty years, thirty years now the story and we're celebrated
it with it with Hunted Mansion Holidayat Disneyland. That's awesome. Okay,
(20:59):
okay, This right here is theAunit Horseman. He's gonna interrupt us from
time to time. This is socool. And this is activated by magic
bands right rag for those that arehaving their magic bands. And it's just
not here, it's a lot ofother areas too. If you're watching the

because it all activates little secret surprisesand in certain areas of the park as

(23:15):
Preview. You can also check outthe interview on my Instagram and the KFI
Instagram at KFI AM six forty andat Amy King. Oh nope, at
Amy K King. Now, let'sget back to some of the stories coming
out of the KFI twenty four hournewsroom. Jury deliberations are underway in the
trial of a man accused of shootingtwo Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies. The
(23:41):
deputies were shot sitting in their patrolvehicle at the Compton Metro station in September
of twenty twenty. Both suffered seriousinjuries. During the closing arguments yesterday,
a defense attorney said the man hadbeen drinking heavily and using meth after the
death of his best friend. Theman is accused of shooting four people over
a span of two weeks, includingthe deputies. The man accused of killing
(24:04):
inn La County Sheriff's deputy has pleadednot guilty by reason of insanity. Kevin
Salazar wore a bulletproof vest, hishands restrained at his waist. He entered
the plea yesterday in a courtroom inLancaster. Hours later, DA Gascon announced
the murder charge with three special circumstances. If convicted, the defensible phase sentence
of life, I'm imprisonment without thepossibility operole. The criminal complaints as Salazar
(24:26):
used a twenty two caliber revolver andbought the weapon weeks before the shooting at
the Hall of Justice. Steve GregoryKing if I News. The fiance the
ell Kennty Sheriff's deputy murdered in Palmdale, says he was the best guy she
ever met. She and Ryan Klinckenbromerwere engaged four days before he was murdered
on Saturday. The man accused ofkilling him again at Steve just mentioned charged
(24:47):
yesterday with murder plus special circumstances allegations. More people on the Palace Verdes Peninsula
say they're worried about losing their homesto a landslide. Nearly a dozen homes
in Rolling Hills Estates were stroyed almosttwo months ago when the ground gave way.
Now two homes have been red taggedin the Seaview neighborhood of Rancho Palace
(25:10):
Verdes. Elle County Supervisor Janice Hahnwas out there last night. Residents say
the ground underneath some of the homeshas moved, Huge cracks have appeared on
some of the properties, and thestreets and sidewalks are shifting. A former
aide to President Trump has made sexualassault claims against Rudy Giuliani. Cassidy Hutchinson
(25:32):
claims in an upcoming book that Giulianigroped her on the day of the January
sixth riot at the Capitol. ABC'sAndrea FUJII says Hutchinson claims Giuliani put his
hand under her blazer and skirt. She writes, I lower my eyes and
watch his freehand reach for the hemof my blazer. I feel his frozen
fingers trail up my thigh. Apolitical advisor to Giuliani calls the allegations a
(25:56):
disgusting line and says it's fair toask why she is just now coming out
with these allegations from two and ahalf years ago while marketing her new book.
The Biden administration says it's taking newaction to handle the crisis at the
southern border. ABC's Matt Rivers saysthe city of Eagle Pass, Texas,
declared a state of emergency yesterday becauseof the thousands of migrants crossing the border
(26:19):
every day. As for why we'reseeing this spike in migrant crossings now,
it's really a mixture of the easingof peak summer temperatures and increase in human
smuggling activity, and the simple factthat there are already a record number of
migrants already on the move in thispart of the world. The Biden administration
says it's sending eight hundred active dutymembers to the border in addition to the
(26:40):
twenty five hundred already deployed to assistcustoms and border protection. Okay, we've
got something really fun coming up thisweekend, especially if you are a pet
owner, specifically, if you area dog owner, we want to welcome

most dogs attending a film screening. Is there a current world record for this
or is this a new thing? One hundred ninety nine, so we need
(28:57):
at least two hundred dogs. Ohwait, we miss you. The part
of the first part of what yousaid, you need at least two hundred
dogs. So there is a currentworld record. There is a current world

the first kind of event like thisthat that you have participated in, Peggy,
