(00:00):
Wake Up Call is out and aboutthis week for LA fleetwek Fleet Week It's
happening this weekend at the Port ofLos Angeles. We caught up with lead
Navy planner for Fleet Week, BrianO'Rourke on the flight deck of the USS
Carl Vincent. This is the firsttime an aircraft carrier has been on the
LA Waterfront in thirteen years, andit is massive. When we pulled up

(00:22):
to it, I'm like, Holycow, that's got to be the aircraft
carrier because it's Isn't it like threefootball fields long? It is about one
thousand and ninety two feet long, and it needs to be that long because
jets are taking off and landing fromthis slight rack. That's right, and
a couple of examples of the jetsthat we have that are going to be

(00:44):
on display this weekend are right behindus. We have an F eighteen E
and FA eighteen E or Echo Echo. You might think that this is the
plane that was used in Top Gun, but it's not. We only know
that because that one was a twoseater. This one, as you can
see, is a one seater. And then over next to that this is

(01:06):
even a newer plane which one isthe new jet. Wow, and look
how the wings turn up? Andis that so they can go down into
the hangars exactly safe space? Loveit? And then over is it over
here? It's somewhere along the flightdeck. There's a gap in the flight
deck and that flight deck raises andlower. That's the elevator and it's an

(01:30):
elevator, so then they can stowthe planes underneath. Yet exactly so amazing.
So these are going to be someof the planes that you'll see when
you come out because they're doing shiptours this weekend. And so tell us
when we come out to fleet weekwhen are the ship tours and how do
people get involved with that? TheCarl Vinson will be open for tours Friday,
Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Okay, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

(01:53):
The ships will be open from zerofrom ten am to about four pm.
I will stress that if you wantto tour the ship, you should get
here early because the lines are goingto be long. On Monday, on
Memorial Day, the ship is onlyopen from ten to two. You know

(02:14):
why because the ship needs to prepareto go back to San Diego. They
shipping busy schedule. She's got abusys schedule. Okay. So that's the
ship tour part of Fleet Week, and there's so much more going on,
and so tell us some of thethings that we're going to see at Fleet
Week this week. There will bemilitary exhibits from all branches of the service,
so not only the Navy, notonly the Coast Guard, the Marines,

(02:37):
the Army. We'll all have displaysout there. Come down and see
the military hardware. Talk to thesailors, the soldiers, the Marines,
the coast Guards, Coast Guard folksabout what they do, what the equipment
is that they're operating, or theyhave their own display. We'll have helicopters
down there. When I was comingin, there was a tank driving down

(02:58):
the street, so I'm guessing thatwill be on display as well. So
if the tank was coming down thestreet when you saw it, that tells
me that the helicopters are already in. So we landed helicopters in that space.
And that's how you build a sitelike that. You bring all the
big stuff in first, so youland the helicopters, then you bring the
big tanks in, then you knowthe smaller things. As we go.
So the expo opens on Friday, and the expo will be open from ten

(03:21):
to six every day. There willbe live music on the main stage every
day. The Navy Band and theMarine and the Marine Corps Band will be
playing not only in the main stage, and this is really important, but
the Navy and Marine Corps bands willbe playing all over the Greater Los Angeles
area throughout the week. They'll beplaying at outdoor events, indoor events.

(03:42):
We'll be playing all over all. That information is available on the La Fleet
Week website, which is la fleetweekdot org. Go check it out and
see where the bands might be playingin your neighborhood. And I got to
tell you that the bands are phenomenal. Tell me, Brian, why should
people choose to come down here. Why is it important for them to come

(04:03):
down here and learn about the military. So it's important for several different reasons,
and you know, one of themost important reasons is that your taxpayer
dollars are what funds our defense. Is a country, right, so the
taxpayer dollars are are what give usthese valuable defense assets that we have,

(04:27):
like this aircraft carrier. And it'snot often that people get to get this
close. So actually, I meanyou can watch Top Gun and you can
kind of get a feel for,oh wow, that looks really cool.
Even an IMAX. Sorry, evenan IMAX, it's not like being here
right now, standing on the flightdeck of an aircraft carrier. It's not
This is just so impressive. Andyou're right, I love those movies and

(04:48):
I think that they're amazing, butyou just get a different sense of how
big it is in walking through theship. I mean, everything that has
to go in too make this isa whole city on the water, and
its so it's just uninspiring. Andit's so important for us to support our
military, especially right now. Andyeah, another reason why it's important is
it's important for our sailors and marinesto connect with the public. So it's

(05:14):
important for sales and marines to getout meet people, talk about their experiences,
you know, and tell people whyyou know, maybe a career in
the military is a great thing. It really is. With the incredible high
tech jobs that young eighteen to twentyseven year old people are doing. We
have eighteen to twenty something year oldsailors working on flight decks like this around

(05:40):
the world every single day. Anincredibly hazardous environment. But you know what,
they learn how to do these incrediblydifficult and hazardous jobs safely, and
the experience that they get and theopportunities that they get is just unrivaled,
I mean caio for the rest oftheir lives, whether they stay in the
military or then go on to acivilian career later jet So you know,

(06:01):
we hope that we inspire some someyoung folks to say, oh, maybe
this has something for me. Briano' rourke, thank you so much for
your thank you La fleetweek dot org. I'm going to post the interview on
my Instagram, so please do checkit out. It's quite a cool view.
You can find it a little bitlater today at Amy K. King
and at KFI AM six forty, but honestly, if you get the chance,

(06:25):
go check it out for yourself. For yourself, the USS Carl Vincent
is very impressive. Love Fleetweek
