Speaker 1 (00:00):
I'm Tari's Mexi and you're listening to the seventy six

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Four victories, four combacks, and last night's victory came in Washington,
d C. We are currently joined by Matt Murphy, senior
content coordinator of sixers dot Com.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Did I get that right?

Speaker 1 (00:34):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Did it get elevated? It's elevated, I know, I know.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
I like that. Broadcasting is part of it too, So
content and broadcasting, even though is that the same thing?
Sort of yes, big umbrella type of content.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Right.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
But we're back doing six ers and sixty for yet
another year together, which is always good. Four and oh,
I think there are many who would not have anticipated that.
I think the bigger surprise for at least I was
eating out last night, and I couldn't believe the enthusiasm
of the people sitting around me watching the game of

(01:12):
style play. They just love the way these guys are playing.
What would you say to that.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
It's a team that's got options now with so many
young guards. I know, earlier in the show, you were
talking about Embiid's presence and how that affects things. But
to have Quentin Grimes coming off the bench, for this
team to hopefully soon be getting Jared McCain into this mix,
it's really exciting. And Maxi and edgecomb are leading the

(01:43):
way for that excitement factor. I think throughout a game
they can kind of beat you in different ways and
the pace. Like you said up there, they're a high
scoring team. You want to see the defense lock in
a little bit more. Nick Nurse is known as a
pressure defense coach. And maybe it's just early season, you know,

(02:04):
adjustments that they're making, but they make a ton of
adjustments in game to pull these these wins out this
fourth quarter or these fourth quarter heroics that they've had.
It's actually a plus forty seven for them in the
fourth quarter between the four games. I was adding it
up earlier, one forty eight to one oh one outscoring
teams in the fourth quarter. The only one that was
close was the Orlando fourth quarter and that was thirty

(02:26):
five thirty to hold. For the defense to lock down
and hold Washington to sixteen in the game last night
was phenomenal. But yeah, playing fast and they played a
Washington team that is fast, and that's been a concern
defensively for them is the point of attack, as Nick
Nurse said before the game, and I think he liked
how that tightened up as it went, because just because

(02:49):
the team's young doesn't mean that that's their style. But
it was for the Wizards, and the Sixers matched it
when they needed to. And I just can't get enough
of watching Maxi and Edgecombe and the city's really excited
right now.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
They really are, and for the first time in a
long time, they're.

Speaker 3 (03:05):
Actually getting national attention.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
I've watched shows that ESPN in the morning showing what
these guys are doing. You walked in here and told
me something.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
I didn't know.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
I'm a huge fan of Inside the NBA, which was
on T and T forever end a Day and now
has moved to ESPN, has a new name, but I'll
still always call it Inside the NBA with Ernie, Charles,
Kenny and Shack.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
But you said they're on the media tour continues. Apparently
the backcourt will be joining that show tonight and the
early part of that show so shortly. So it's just
it's national right Like.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Well, VJ was on Good Morning America, for God's sakes,
after the Celtics game, which was incredible.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
He said, I had to get up early. But other
than that it was great.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
He's twenty, so we have to cut him some slash.
That's the only thing you could dock him for so far.
Is a couple of times he's mentioned, oh, the seven
am workouts with Maxi, Like he kind of groans a
little bit because he doesn't want to wake up that early.
But at least he did it in the summer with Maxi.
And then he yeah, he did it for TV and
everything else. He's been saying the right things all the time.

(04:18):
Nick Nurse has said that he's been doing the right
things all the time, and he always wants to talk
about so I'm sure when they go on these shows,
he always wants to talk about Maxi and his teammates
and honestly above anything. And I get the same type
of sense from a dem Bona. It's about winning. It's
not that Bona had two points yesterday and it was
a huge put back dunk off the Maxi miss. It

(04:40):
was that they won. It's not that he had five blocks,
and sometimes I think he gets short changed on number
of blocks. But it's those types of players, the winning mentality.
It's going through this roster right now. MAXI said it
on media day to all of us setting the standard,
no matter who's in who's out, this is the seventy

(05:01):
six Ers team that you're going to get, and it
was kind of open for interpretation, but I really think
it's about diving for loose balls, playing hard every night,
never considering yourself out of the game. And that's what
we've seen with all of these fourth quarter comebacks in
three out of the four games so far. To be
four and oh, to be one of the last four
undefeated teams, it's really really great vibe so far.

Speaker 2 (05:24):
Absolutely, and the other three that joined the Sixers as undefeated,
the Bulls in the Eastern Conference along with the Sixers
and out West the defending champs Shocker there thunder or
five and oh, and the Spurs are four and oh
as well. I kind of don't mind that it has

(05:47):
been all about team and the energy and wanting to
make sure people know that they play hard every night.
But I don't think it should get lost that Joel, yes,
he sat one game because it was a back to
back situation, but he was ready in training camp. He

(06:07):
played this season opener and those other two sat the
one back to back and played last night up to
minutes to twenty three. Clearly he wasn't happy with the
minute restriction and probably still isn't, But he did score.

Speaker 3 (06:21):
Twenty five points.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
I know he only had one field goal in the opener,
but after that, to me, he's looked like a guy
who wants to fit in and let's not forget that
he can come up with some big, big plays for
this team.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
I think if someone was to say that the twenty
five in twenty three minutes was quiet, that that's that's
fair a good thing. Yes, isn't that a good thing?
That it's not obvious how his contributions are affecting everything
you've got going on with the young guards. I think
that's a good thing that it's it's not so obvious

(06:55):
how his points are coming for this team. And that
was the story in Nick nurses first season coaching was
this and b points per minute thing, how he was
averaging more than a point per minute, right, historic numbers,
And he did that with the twenty five in twenty
three last night as we're talking right now. So I
think that's a good thing. Like the more I thought
about it. Did you remember a lot of his points

(07:18):
last night? Did he get to twenty pretty quickly?

Speaker 2 (07:20):
Yes, a lot of it was early, as it was
in uh obviously he didn't play the night before.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
Summer threes early. Yes, but that's fine. Keep up with
the pace. Nick Nurse told us he's the best three
point shooter on the team. So if they started out
three or five last in the Wizard's game, they had
the home game Charlotte, they made nine in the first quarter.
If he's part of that in the flow of the offense,
then then great, so I think, and he's so just

(07:46):
part of this right now, part of the celebration for
Bona last night. He's engaged at everything. And when that
ESPN story came out and it was like he's going
to take it slow into this season, you could have
interpreted that as he might not start the season playing
games like he didn't last year. I thought he did.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
I think most of exactly.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
He slightly limited, but it's better than the alternative. And
it was a slow build kind of last night in
the game a little bit for him. I mean, I
know he made a couple of shots earlier, but like
in terms of that energy and the smiling and all.
But he got there and they won again. So he
was standing and jumping around with his teammates, and.

Speaker 2 (08:21):
He doesn't seem like he wants to get in Maxi's way.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
He also has.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
Complimented Bona for being a guy willing to do the
dirty work when he plays with him, and I see
a little bit of a.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Kinder, softer.

Speaker 2 (08:42):
I don't want to say nicer, because that sounds like
he was mean before, but I feel like he thought
the world was mean to him, and it's nice to
see him coming to a place where he seems happier
and the team can benefit from his skill set along
with not having to rely only on him and be

(09:04):
more of a team with some youth put into the mix.

Speaker 1 (09:11):
He said recently a postgame that it's more of a
mindset shift than any type of culture shift. I think
it might have been last night, but mindset in that
everything that could have gone wrong last year did and
they just are starting the year with the right mindset.
And I think he is at the forefront of that,
or he's bought into that like Maxie and everybody else's.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
Yeah, we'll take a break.

Speaker 2 (09:33):
We are bringing you sixers in sixty on this Wednesday night.
The Sixers will next play and try to extend their
winning streak to five games in a row. When they
entertained the Celtics on Friday.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
NBA Cup game NBA. Is it still the Emirates Cup?

Speaker 1 (09:51):
Yup, Emirates NBA Cup Blue court on Friday?

Speaker 3 (09:54):
Blue Court.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
The only thing I don't like about the Emirates Cup
and them being in the same.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
It's ABC. I don't know which one they are.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Yeah, they played the Celtics three times before November eleven.

Speaker 3 (10:10):
That that's insane to me.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
And I get it because they're in the Cup with them,
but it's not it's not good for the division down
the stretch when you think.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
You might be battling that team for ad point for
a playoff.

Speaker 1 (10:23):
Really good point, because I noted how many times they
played early. But it's you're right, it's because because the
last year they didn't play until the Christmas game, because
they weren't in the Cup with them.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
I don't think they should be in the Cup with
each other, like, just put it out.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Yeah, it's all based on your record the previous seas
and they pull from there.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
We'll take a break. We'll talk about the Emirates Cup.
When we come back, we'll continue talking about the Sixers
and their four and oh start and how this has
kind of come to fruition with no big splashes, even
drafting VJ. I'm sorry it was not a big splash

(11:05):
in the draft, and yet things are falling into place
for this twenty five to twenty six season.

Speaker 3 (11:12):
D Lineman. This is ninety seven to five.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
To the fanatic off, also to a four and h
start to the twenty five to twenty six season, most
recently winning a back to back, second night of a
back to back Tuesday in our nation's capital one thirty nine,
one thirty four. Tyrese Maxey led the way with thirty

(11:36):
nine points. Joelle Andbe contributed twenty five seven rebounds in
twenty three minutes. Kelly Ubray Junior with a second consecutive
double double seventeen and eleven, coming off the bench and
hitting a big big three. Quinton Grimes twenty three points, rebounds,

(12:01):
three steals in two blocks, and of course the Den Bona.

Speaker 3 (12:06):
I cannot leave him out.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
He only played seventeen and a half minutes, but he
had five important block shots.

Speaker 3 (12:16):
And one huge made field goal.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
I'm joined by Matt Murphy here in the studio at
ninety seven to five of The Fanatic, And in that
break we were checking in on Tyres VAXIEMPJ Edgecombe, who
have elevated themselves to the big time, joining Shaq, Charles
Kenny and Ernie on NBA tip Off, which is the
new name of the show since it has moved from

(12:42):
TNT to ESPN. And it's amazing when I'm listening Tyree's
now all of a sudden, seems like the old head.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
He's still just twenty four for another week or so.
Sixth year in the NBA though, so he is a
veteran to VJ.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
But even just watching him listen to VJA answering the questions,
and we know those guys like to just have fun.

Speaker 1 (13:06):
And it was a zoom interview, so Maxie said, it
still looks like he's in the dorm room like he
was that Baylor still and then a classic shack line, Yes,
get yourself a.

Speaker 3 (13:17):
TV right exactly.

Speaker 2 (13:20):
It really did look bare bones, right, But a lot
of times when those guys move, I mean, I if
I'm not mistaken, didn't Tyresee's parents come pretty quickly to
Philadelphia when he was a first year guy.

Speaker 1 (13:36):
I think so. And his uncle has been around and
was living with him for a while, and he just
had friends.

Speaker 2 (13:43):
I always say he had guys. Jared McCain has his
buddy who's always with them.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
Shout out to Nate, Shout out to Nate.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
I think it's hard if you're just all by yourself,
you know what I mean. It's just like you say
to yourself, well, I did just come from a dorm
room at your go I am just twenty years old.

Speaker 1 (14:03):
Nurse said after the draft that VJ had a couple
things on his schedule that he rearranged so that he
could just get here and get moving. So in fact,
he might have even gotten here sooner than than anybody
expected to start working. And he just has a vibe
that is contagious, even to someone like Maxie who's now
been in it for six seasons, Oubra who's double digit

(14:24):
seasons in the league. He's all business in practice, but
then in between, you know, some getting up some shots
after the official practice, when we get in there and
see like he'll start dancing, and then you'll see Maxie
start dancing and they have this handshake, and you'll see
Ubra start dancing. You need that type of thing on
a team that's trying to compete. There's always like that,

(14:45):
those one or two young guys that bring that type
of energy. And for it to be the number three
overall pick, who is this talented? I think it's great
because he's intense, but then he can crack a smile
in between, and and that's kind of what how Max
he made his way in this city too. But they
asked him about the adjustment from Waco, Texas last year

(15:06):
to Philadelphia this year, and.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
He said a lot of people. There's a lot of people.

Speaker 1 (15:11):
But he's just a he's twenty and one. Moment that's
stuck with me so far. About VJ. Edgecomb is before
the first home preseason game, he took the floor at
Exfinity Mobile Arena, and I'm sure he's played in a
basketball arena that has hockey ice underneath, like the NCAA
tournament they lost to Duke last year, and he played

(15:32):
in some big arenas it's cold. But it was cold,
and he had a sweatshirt over his practice penny for
the shoot around and then he took the penny off,
put the sweatshirt underneath and was like rubbing his arms
like Burr when he got on the Sixers court for
the first time, and he just he has these he
just shows where's his emotions on his sleeve kind of
and most of the time it's it's really good and

(15:54):
uplifting and enlightening for the group.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
Well, even after the Celtics game where he scored the
thirty four and you know, it was historic for the franchise,
it was historic NBA wise, he gets to go on
Good Morning America. Then they would go to practice and
somebody asked him, you know, oh, are you walking down
the street and people notice who you are? And he said,

(16:18):
I don't leave my apartment, And I believe him. I
think he basically goes to work and goes back to
his apartment.

Speaker 1 (16:28):
He came to Maxi's golf outing at Union League Toursdale,
and he just does these funny things. There was sort
of like it wasn't a red carpet, but I was
talking to the guys as they came in, and he
stands in front of me and he takes sunglasses out
of his pocket and puts them on inside just to
talk to me. In this one off interview, like red

(16:48):
carpet he's like, I'm gonna put my sunglasses on. So
he's reserved, but he's also outgoing and he can do
a little bit of everything off the court. He can
do a little bit of everything on the court as well.
The shooting has been really good obviously. Defense athleticism brings
so much speed to this team, and more than anything,
like the poise is just out out of the squirrel

(17:09):
a day. People say Tom and I say all the
time postgame, seems like he's been in the league for
ten years. And when we hear from him, it sounds
like he's been in the league for ten years too.

Speaker 2 (17:18):
Very mature for his skill set and his age and
the way he presents himself. I heard Nick Nurse say,
he said Jared's name out loud and others is hopefully
coming back soon. Do you think we'll see Jared in

(17:39):
say the next two weeks or longer.

Speaker 1 (17:43):
Well, the next steps are facing some contact in practice,
which he hadn't been doing. We had seen him for
the last couple of weeks shooting left handed when he
had the splint.

Speaker 3 (17:54):
Yeah, but he got this.

Speaker 1 (17:55):
He got the splint off. So now it's been four
days without the splint. The shot looks really good. I mean,
his form is amazing. So I just haven't personally heard
the updates on the contact levels that he's been flashing.
And they didn't have a formal practice today after the
back to back you can, but well, that's something we'll

(18:15):
probably find out tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (18:16):
It's a question that's fair to ask tomorrow when they
do have practice. Yeah, and then we'll continue to see
the weight on Paul George who has been practicing.

Speaker 1 (18:27):
Right we it was the the list was Watford for
the longest time, who who joined the group last night
and brings interesting traits to the group as a tall
six eight sixty nine ball handler. His only basket of
the game was a post up when he got the
matchup on the rookie for the Wizard's tray Johnson. That's Watford.

(18:49):
So him and George were in practice the last couple
of practices at least, and Watford returned, so hopefully George
is following a similar timeline. And then McCain wasn't doing
contact and Barlow had a procedure two nights ago for
the elbow laceration. So that's the injury report right now.
I know it was impressive that they beat Orlando with

(19:11):
mb not playing. On top of all those players not playing,
everyone has just been ready to step in when their
numbers called. Even Eric Gordon in that game was great
score eight points after not playing the whole season so far,
in the whole season meaning two games, but to come
in cold and justin Edwards like they flipped the Charlotte game.
Like Edwards drum Edwards and drum and flipped the Charlotte game.

(19:35):
Gordon helped not flip but maintain the Orlando game. So
I guess credit to the depth of this team. It's
there are some younger reserves, but then still some veteran
reserves that are calling on their experience to be ready
in these moments.

Speaker 2 (19:50):
I have failed to give Andre some some love on
this show tonight because Drumming played eleven and a half
minutes and did pull down ten rebounds. Again, this guy
is unbelievable, and two nights ago became the thirty second
all time NBA player to pull down eleven thousand rebounds.

Speaker 3 (20:10):
Eleven thousand? Are you kidding me?

Speaker 1 (20:13):
Listen to this Embiid against the Wizards grabbed his five
thousandth So wow, drummend, is that eleven thousand EMBIID. Is
that five thousand, that's insane. I know their careers don't
exactly line up. I mean, Drummond was doing it a
lot longer.

Speaker 2 (20:26):
And also that goes to health udonaman availability is obviously
the best ability. But then when I saw that number,
I said to myself, that is crazy.

Speaker 1 (20:38):
Drummond nine hundred and eight games EMBIID four fifty five.
So I guess that makes sense.

Speaker 2 (20:43):
It's half of it, a little less, I mean a
little more. Anyhow, I've failed to mention his ten boards
from last night's win.

Speaker 1 (20:53):
Since this is the twenty fifth anniversary season of the
one Eastern Conference champion team. Drummond when it comes to
offensive rebounds in particular, is thirty offensive rebounds away from
surpassing to Kembe Matumbo for twelfth in offensive rebounds.

Speaker 3 (21:12):
So he for the franchise or for his forty for.

Speaker 1 (21:15):
His career for the yeah, yeah, so he's it'll be
around thirty eight hundred or something offensive rebounds well.

Speaker 2 (21:23):
So only because his role has changed depending on the
teams that he has played on. Per thirty six matters
more to me with a guy like an Andrei Drummond
than maybe some other people, but per thirty six and
rebounds averaged number one all time Bill Russell nineteen plus

(21:48):
number two all time Will Chamberlain eighteen. Number three per
thirty six is Andre Drummond at sixteen point eight.

Speaker 3 (21:58):
I mean, that's incredible company.

Speaker 1 (22:00):
That's a great list. Yeah, he has said over the
years that he's the best rebounder. Yeah, to ever do it. Yeah,
the numbers are close.

Speaker 3 (22:08):
I mean yeah, I mean those other guys.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
Andre's minutes are much less than those other two. But
we're talking about per thirty six and he's literally one
point two off of Wilt Chamberlain.

Speaker 3 (22:22):
Are you kidding me?

Speaker 1 (22:23):
Meanwhile, Maxi is in the same company as Wilt Chamberlain
for scoring so far. It's ridiculous that Maxie at thirty
seven point five points per game in the first four
is only behind Wilt actually for total points for a
six Ers first four games, but leading the NBA and
scoring at tyrese thirty seven and a half. He's also
averaging over eight assists so far.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
I mean, I said he's first in the scoring and
tied for seventh and assists.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
Yeah, it's just been.

Speaker 3 (22:51):
It's been.

Speaker 1 (22:52):
On the start to the season, the blue court is
coming for that NBA Cup. They're in there with Boston
on Friday and Orlando, who we've been talking about that
game a little bit here. They're also in Group B.
So it'll be the Celtics, the Magic, the Nets, and
the Pistons. And the Pistons are probably your biggest competition
in there this year because they've they've gotten off to

(23:13):
the best start other than the Sixers in that group,
because the Magic and Celtics have both started slow. But
that's the Sixers Cup, Emirates NBA Cup group.

Speaker 2 (23:22):
Right, and we should tell people these you'll see the
crazy floors and the Emirates Cup.

Speaker 3 (23:28):
It goes.

Speaker 2 (23:30):
They are all the dates that I see are Fridays
until there's no Thanksgiving week, correct, and then it's a
Wednesday and Tuesday Wednesday, and then the whole thing wraps
up in Vegas mid December.

Speaker 1 (23:42):
Pushed up this year, so normally last year was mid
November when we started. Now the Halloween start, it all
adds to it. I mean, the energy for Halloween, the Celtics,
the Court, the Cup, it's all coming in two days
on Friday, and you pretty much need to win your
four games in there to have a chance because it's
three group winners in each group both conferences, and only

(24:05):
one wild card, so only eight teams make it to
the knockout round. So you lose to Boston Friday and
you're going to be climbing an uphill battle, right.

Speaker 3 (24:13):
So I don't think.

Speaker 1 (24:14):
That's going to be the last thing that Nick Nurse
says to the group before they go out there about
the Cup being a must win Cup game. They just
want to win, but it's just a factor for I
think for everyone following the game on Friday.

Speaker 3 (24:26):
Matt, thanks for coming in. We appreciate always, good to
see you.

Speaker 1 (24:30):
Thanks for having me absolutely every Wednesday. We'll be doing that, Yes, six.

Speaker 2 (24:33):
Ers and sixty on Wednesdays. Right here on ninety seven
to five The Fanatic. Matt's going to get to go home,
Haley and I will stay around and we will bring
you Philly Sports tonight for another hour here on ninety
seven to five The Fanatic

Ruthie's Table 4

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks.
