Speaker 3 (00:00):
I've got him at the right time.

Speaker 1 (00:01):
Former chair of the GOP and now a frequent critic
of the current leadership of the GOP, Dick Wadhams joins me, Hello, Dick,
your column today, hmm. You must have been like, wow,
I probably should have saved that one for another day,
so I can make some corrections on your column about
what was supposed to happen Saturday, if you could.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
You know when I filed that column on the last
Thursday for Friday, Andy, I thought about that that we
had no idea what would happen on Saturday. But I'm
so glad I wrote it because it basically focused on
that ridiculous meeting under the bridge in Bridge in the Bayfield, Colorado.
By that sham meeting, the way it was called down.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
There, apparently it didn't even show up for it was
so important that they have.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Now.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
Let me just give people who are just joining us
or just getting up to speed. It went like this,
after collecting enough signatures from Central Committee members, there were
two Republicans who said, we want to call a meeting
to talk about ousting Dave Williams, who has been plundering
the party's money and using it for his own personal gain.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
And so according to the bylaws, the.

Speaker 1 (01:07):
Actual leadership of the Central Committee as ten days to
call a meeting. Instead of doing that, they called a
meeting in the middle of the week, early in the
day in Bayfield, which is six hours away from Denver.
And the kicker is they didn't even rent a space.
They didn't even meet in the lobby of the McDonald's dick.
They met under a bridge like trolls in the middle

(01:29):
of the morning, you.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
And then they called that meeting into order and then
they immediately called it out of order until the August
thirty one, which is when they plan on having a
meeting to address all this. This is just I was
so mad when I found out what happened on Friday.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Yeah, I mean, I mean, I mean, Mandy. This entire
regime that Williams with his other two is that they
there are no ethics, there are no rules, there are
no frankly, election laws, there are no norms that are
not that should not be violated in the pursuit of

(02:08):
their ambitions. And this is the latest the prostitution I
think of the of the bylaws of the Colorado Republican
Party to have a sham meeting under a bridge to
UH to give the appearance of meeting the bylaw requirement.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
And instead of that, UH, the the well, we'll call
the the anti David Williams wing. They said, you know what,
we're going to call our own meeting as the bylaws allow.
They called a meeting on Saturday. On Friday, a judge,
because Dave Williams is wasting more of the of the
party's money by filing a lawsuit to stop this meeting,

(02:45):
a judge offers a temporary restraining order. What's your best
guess on what happens next in this absolute circus, Well.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
What I am told is that that restraining order will
come down at some point as this week, and then
that the group of people who legitimately called a meeting
of the State Central Committee will hold that meeting sometime
in early to mid August. And he's going to the

(03:13):
fact of the matter is, Mandy, it's becoming pretty clear
the votes exist to replace him. Now I doubt if
he will leave. I think he'll declare the meeting that
would remove him as null and void and illegally whatever
language he uses. And then, frankly, the Republican National Committee
will have to intervene and decide who is the legitimate

(03:36):
chairman of Colorado's Republican Party. That's what they did in
Michigan just a year ago.

Speaker 1 (03:40):
Well, and Dave Williams did not make any friends in
this last election cycle at the RNC because he grifted,
as grifters do. When Donald Trump was convicted, he sent
out a fundraising email expressly forbidden by the RNC. They said,
do not try to fundraise off this, because we're going
to be fundraising off this. And he sent an email

(04:01):
out that said stand with Dave and Trump, but oddly
only went to his.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
Campaign donation page. So, I mean, he's not made a
lot of friends.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
No, he thinks he can. He thinks he can get
away with anything he wants to do. That there are
no rules that apply to him, not even not not
even demands set forth by the Republican National Committee and
the Trump campaign, they don't apply to him. He can
do what he wants. And it's catch. It has caught

(04:32):
up with him, Mandy, and I think he actually senses that.
You know, he has not been seen or heard from
for weeks now, except when he was up the National Convention,
and there were brief sites of him then, but I
think he knows his days or numbers to stay chair.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
He's got to.

Speaker 1 (04:49):
I mean, you have to be It's you know, I
said it about Joe Biden when that in the weeks
after the disastrous debate.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
I said it about Joe Biden.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
When enough people tell you you're dead, it's time to lie down.
It is time for Dave Williams to lie down. And
yet he shows no signs. And in the process we've
got actual Republicans who could use help from a state
party that are getting nothing. And we are perilously close,
as Barbara Kirkmeyer pointed out at this rally on Saturday,

(05:16):
of being in a super minority situation where they don't
even have to give lip surface to Republican policies. Is
this could not be any worse right now. The timing
of this is just absolutely horrible.

Speaker 2 (05:31):
No, and Mandy, at this point in any given election cycle,
the Colorado Republican Party should have up and running is
what we call victory, which is the get out the
vote by the corred Republican state party. It is one
of the most crucial programs of the Colorado Republican Party
because it is it is supposed to get Republicans out

(05:51):
to vote, and to show you how effective it is.
In twenty ten, when I was chairman, we got one
hundred and six Thousandublicans out to vote more than Democrats.
In twenty fourteen, in that election cycle, under a different
chair we got one hundred and ten thousand more Republicans
out to vote in Democrats. And that was the year

(06:12):
that Cory Gardner un seated the Mark Udolf twenty fourteen.
We won a bunch of elections in twenty ten, and
nothing is happening on that front. It is also a
program that has been traditionally funded helped, it helped being
funded by the RNC. They haven't set a nine to him,
and so the Republican Party does not exist right now

(06:35):
in Colorado under David Williams.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
So I mean, I'd love to say what can we do,
and especially to your point about get out the vote stuff.
I heard a sound by Shadmarab the other day, the
head of the Democratic Party in Colorado. He's talking about,
you know, an army of volunteers to go door knock
in you. Derek Caraveo's district, which is a very winnable
race for Republicans if they could get it together. All

(07:00):
I can think of is as a matter of fact,
I tweeted at Dave Williams, I'm like, what's your you know,
who are you organizing to go doorknock here?

Speaker 3 (07:06):
He's utterly incompetent.

Speaker 1 (07:07):
The fact that anyone in the Central Committee still backs
him I find the most upsetting Dick. I mean, because
there's literally no aspect of his job of GOP chairman
that he has done well. He has spent the party money,
he has used the mailor system illegally from what I
can understand, federal elections commissions looking into that. He has

(07:29):
not raised money, He has not helped get anyone elected.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
He threw one.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Hundred years worth of norms about not endorsing in the
primary out the window, and fourteen out of eighteen of
them lost. So how could anybody still be supporting him?

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Well, I think that's one of his problems right now, Mandy,
that a lot of people involved in that meeting Saturday
that got delayed by the judge are former supporters of hits.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
Oh wow.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
I think a lot of people that gave him the
benefit of the day of a year ago are now
totally against them, and they're participate of pending in this
move to remove him. To your other point about to
get out the vote effort, it puts people like Jeff
Hurd in the third congressional district, gave Evans in the
eighth district in those tough seats. They basically are going

(08:15):
to have to run those get out the vote efforts
themselves since they're not going to get any help from
the party. Now. The National Republican Senate Congressional Committee will
be helping with some things, but they're basically on their own,
and they're going to be raised enough money to do
what they need to do. But like I say, traditionally
the party has been very important, very critical to that

(08:36):
and it's not there.

Speaker 1 (08:38):
So, I mean, do we have any hope for Colorado
Republicans right now? What needs to happen, Like if you
could wave a magic wand and you know, inspire people
to do what needs to be done, what needs to
be done, and how can we support that?

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Well, the most important races, since we have no state
wide races on the ballot other than President rights and
I mean Trump is probably not going to carry Colorado, correct,
But that Jeff hurd in the third congressional district. He's
going to win that seat. Dave Evans and the eighth
congressional district gave us them probably the toughest race that

(09:14):
he can win that seat. He is an outstanding candidate,
and we've got Jeff Frank who's already that's a very
Republican district. But we have a bunch of state legislative
candidates around the city, especially in the state Senate you
mentioned earlier about Bard Kirkmeyer. We are one vote away
from the Democrats having a veto proof majority in the Senate,
and we have to win every Senate seat that is

(09:36):
up in terms of a competitive district to hold on
to that seat. So between the state Senates and state
House seats and then the congressional seats, that's the only
thing that matters between now and then and whatever. If
we could elect a new chairman who can at least
put some things in motion to help these candidates, that
would be important.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
Wouldn't that be nice?

Speaker 1 (09:55):
Who would you, if anyone, do you want to say,
if there's anybody out there that's jockeying for this position
that you would support, or who would you think would
be the ideal candidate.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
Well, I think it needs to be somebody who understands
the parameters of the job, who understands the role of
the state chairman, who actually understands the what it takes
to actually attract major donors back to the party, because
major donors have basically shunned this chairman that they've just
basically advantaged because they don't trust them with their money.

(10:26):
So it's got to be somebody who has some experience
and who understands the role of the state chairman. Too
many people think the state chairman can snap their fingers
and things happen. No, it takes a lot of It
takes a lot of knowledge, and it takes a lot
of a lot of experience to know what to do.
And so whoever gets elected has got to understand the

(10:49):
parameters and what the state chair is all about.

Speaker 1 (10:51):
So is there you know, you know as well as
I do that the money has dried up on the
right in Colorado that anybody who fundraises in that space
will will tell you it is. It is the most
challenging fundraising environment they've ever been in, regardless of whether
they're think tank or you know, policy group or whatever.
Is there anyone that you think would have the best
chance of opening those wallets.

Speaker 3 (11:13):
Again.

Speaker 2 (11:15):
Well, this was not a knock on any any of
the other candidates, but I do think that, uh that
somebody like Eli Grammer might probably brings the best experience
to the to the to the job. I mean, Eli
has run for the US Senate. He didn't win, but listen,
when you you learn a lot when you run from

(11:37):
major office like that. And Eli's been He was the
Republican chairman of Altaso County and uh, listen, I think
Eli and he put out a really interesting plan. Yeah,
or and I was really impressed by that. He's got
a candidates.

Speaker 1 (11:53):
I mean, he's got he's got a team from all
over the state. And and you know, I know, I
know that Richard Holtorff wants to do it. I know
that A Horne she was on the show. But I
got to tell you, I too was impressed by Eli's
plan that he pooks. I was like, well, this is
someone who is already organizing to move forward to hit
the ground running immediately.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
And I thought that was impressive.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
Well, the other candidates seem to be talking about unifying party.
Well that's good that it's got to be more than that.
That that that I mean, you've got it. And I
thought Eli really laid out a really good short term
plan because we are one hundred days away in November,
and I was impressed by that.

Speaker 3 (12:33):
Well, we shall see. Dick Wadhams is my guest.

Speaker 1 (12:36):
One last question before I let you go, Dick, and
that is very very simple. Is there any hope for
this election cycle? I mean, if we are we too
far behind the eight ball to talk about some of
those races that you just mentioned earlier, especially like the
Yudeiro carave I gave Evans race. I feel like that's
a very winnable race. I feel like the Adam Frisch

(12:56):
Jeff heard race is a very winnable race. But they're
going to be hards. These are not These are in
no way shape or for him a walk in the park.
Are we going to be able to pull it together
to get it done?

Speaker 2 (13:07):
I do? They are. They are running excellent campaigns, they're
upstanding candidates to Mandy, and I really think Jeff Hurd
is going to win the third. We we know Jeff
Frank is going to win the fifth. I think Dave
Evans is going to win that eighth. District. And then
we've got some like Robin Carnes who's running for the
state Senate and that Arapido County district, which is a

(13:28):
Democratic seat. I think she can she can win that
and take that away. We've got two great incumbents on
the Western Slope Republicans who are running strong campaigns. So
what is interesting is that because of the strength of
our candidates and their campaigns, I still think it could
be a good night in terms of winning some key races.
But they're going to do it despite the state Party,

(13:50):
because of it under Williams.

Speaker 1 (13:53):
Sad but true. Dick Wadhams keep writing about it. I'm
gonna keep talking about it. Eventually we'll be able to
move on from this long there as they say.

Speaker 2 (14:02):
That's right, thank you, all right

Speaker 3 (14:03):
Thanks Dick, appreciate you.
