nothing is off limits. Grab adrink, let's go backstage. Hey,
we are backstage, and we dohave a drink. Cheers, cheers.
Josey Edmonds my guest today. Hi, queen, Hi, okay. I
(00:24):
we obviously have been scheming about thisepisode. I feel like for literally,
like I don't know, maybe likesix or seven months, Yeah, talking
about this whole idea and just inthings like that, And I'm really excited
for everybody to kind of understand wherethis podcast is happening, because our story
goes back to what like two thousandand nine, Yeah, I think so.
(00:45):
I mean I was twenty when Imet you, so gosh, I
don't even want to say my age. I don't even want to say.
We're all like thirty five. We'renot old. We are literally in our
prime. Yeah, we're living ourbest lives. Literally literally living our best
lives. So we have to starttalking about you. Chelsea Edmonds, the
(01:07):
founder CEO, just crushing it,killing it, Queen of Sadie James hat
Co so unexpected. Honestly, ifyou would have told me even three years
ago that my life would be thisright now there would I wouldn't believe you.
I would not believe you. AndI'm blessed and I'm excited, and
I can't believe where my company's gonesince I started it. You know.
(01:30):
It's it's one of those things whereit just feels it feels surreal, like
I'm just floating with it and goingwith it. But at the same time,
all of these different opportunities have cometo me naturally, and it's so
weird to think that people like actuallywant to wear my art, you know,
Like that's that's such a weird feeling. And I love that you called
it your art because if you're watchingvideo right now, these hats literally were
(01:53):
created by your hands, Like thisis all your vision, this is your
creativity. You literally do everything byyourself, yep, all of it.
So from illustrating the hat to basicallyif I come up with an idea,
I like can't sleep at night untilI'll like at least draw it out.
That the beginning illustration never really turnsout the same as the ending because I
(02:14):
find new things to do to eachone. But from hand stretching it to
sizing the client to designing it totheir personality. I literally just make sure
that every single hat is made oneof a kind to someone's personality or to
my personality if I'm making one justfor fun. But yeah, it's all
of it, from the stretching allthe way down to the final it's all
(02:36):
done by hand, so it getsplaced on their head forever. Yeah,
I love it forever and literally forever, Like these hats are the hats that
you're gonna like pass down to yourkids. And you could frisbee these things
across the highway and listen my runsover it. There's like there, it's
gonna be fine. Yeah, it'sfine, It's fine. Okay, so
we have we gotta pause and talkabout Okay, so we met in college.
(02:58):
Fun fact of the day, ChElsand I played volleyball together in college
and you were only their first semester, but it literally feels like we,
I don't know, we just becamebest friends in instant immediately. You know,
you meet those people and you justare like you're my vibe, Like
you were my vibe. And Idon't even think vibe was really being used
in back then, but like, literally you were my vibe. I mean
(03:21):
we met each other. I thinkwe went out like once and then it
was just friends forever. And Imean, like and listen, college Brook
was a fun person. So itwas college Chelsea College. We're not funny
anymore, but you know what Imean, I mean we're pretty fun still
college. We were fun in college, and now we're moms and we're still
(03:42):
fun, you know, incredible andno distant. I mean that's the crazy
part is we distanced for a longtime after college, but then the minute
we reconnected. And I think itwas this company. I was following you
on Instagram and you know, allof those things keeping up with your life,
um, but it was Sadie James. I think that like brought us
back together. I remember I wasscrolling through Instagram and I see just hands
(04:06):
making a hat and like lighting ahat on fire and like putting a bunch
of things on hats and just likedecorating and just making these custom hats.
Yeah, And I was like, holy wow, this is amazing. Sadie
James hat come Co. And Ijust like not my name, yeah,
And I don't remember if I justfollowed the page or what it was.
But then come to find out,I don't know how it all got put
(04:27):
together. I think it was adirect message and I was like, these
are yours? What this is you? This is you, and you started
this company from the ground up.You just you tell the story because you
know better than I do. Butyou just on a whim, said this
is what I want to do forSo it was a journey, and like
I think that there's a lot ofpeople out there who try and find themselves
(04:47):
as a new mom or try andfind themselves in like this new season of
life. And there were a lotof things that I was good at,
but nothing that I was just likecrazy passionate about. I was a marketing
consultant and ran my own company fora while there, and I was just
like I'm good at this. Ilike it, but it's not fueling this
(05:08):
fire. And so one night Iwas up until like four am just couldn't
sleep, just like knew that Iknew it wasn't I wasn't fully there yet.
I was doing fashion illustrations at events, like live illustrations and turning in
you into like your outfit into likea fashion model, and like fun things
like that. But I was like, this isn't it, Like this isn't
the full story for me? Andthen one night I was literally looking a
(05:33):
few years ago and just looking andlooking looking, And that's the other thing
that people don't realize about me.It's like, this is a this is
a very recent thing, but thework that I've put into it has taken
it to the next level. Andso it's I, you know, probably
four or five years ago, Iguess I was scrolling through and I saw
this like video or something that justwas at a milliner taking a hat off
(05:58):
a block, and that's all Isaw, and I was like, I
never thought about the process of ahat being made. And then from there
I was like, I gotta trythis. So I went to a craft
store and bought a phone block andliterally carved a hat block out of it,
and like another thing I used todo when I was a kid was
whittled with my uncle, you know, and like do faces in wood and
(06:19):
like carved flowers and things like that. And I was like, I got
a like piece of felt that wasn'tright, stiffened it. Long story short,
ended up making a hat out ofit, and then started doing more
research. Couldn't find any resources herein the US that weren't like going to
school and like learning this or justclasses or whatever. I couldn't find anything.
It was hard to come by,and people keep this trade very secret.
(06:42):
They don't they don't tell their process. So I was zooming in on
videos and like doing all my research, writing things down, ended up investing
in equipment, were started wearing myhats out for fun and people were buying
them off my head and bars.People were buying them off my head off
the street asking I was writing myinformation down on napkins so people could call
tech me to get a custom madefor them. And then I looked at
my husband one day and I said, this is what I was supposed to
(07:04):
do, Like this is it?You know, this is my life.
I have full body. I knowtoo. That's the funny thing is I
get them too, still talking aboutit. And then I just went hard
to work and made my craft betterand better. I'm still making my craft
better and better every single day,but in trying new things and going wild
with the hats and doing crazy thingswith the hats. And I think that's
(07:27):
what makes it so interesting is andfun is You're never going to see someone
wearing the same hat as you likewalking around. They're not going to look
the same as anybody else's and Ipride myself on that. And if people
if if they start looking the same, I'm gonna change it, you know,
I'm gonna do the next step. And so yeah, that's kind of
my journey on how it all gotstarted. And now I'm here. I
was in North Carolina and now I'mhere in Tennessee and like my dream city.
(07:49):
And so we have to talk abouthow you got the Nashville because we
reconnected on social media. We juststarted talking and like really just playing catch
up because we never really felt outof being friends, just like didn't talk
for a while. Yeah, youknow, exactly exactly. And so when
we when we reconnected, it waslike you just pick right back up where
we left off. And you weretalking about how you know, you I
(08:11):
think at this point had just boughta trailer so you can do mobile designs
in still in the works in NorthCarolina, right, and you were like
we were just talking and I wasjust like you were just like, you
know, I would love to cometo Nashville. And we literally in like
a week, and it was itcouldn't have been more than a month.
It couldn't be like two or threeweeks and it was like, we're like,
(08:33):
we're gonna have this hat party, invite some friends over, let's make
custom hats and see how it goes. And like, I mean, everybody
was obsessed. Yeah, And thatwas a takeoff point and it was really
it was so funny to me becausethat was a tester for me to see
how I would do making hats live, because these take time, Like quality
items take time. That's what Iwant everybody to understand. It's like when
(08:54):
only two hands are making something, you're gonna get a beautiful, like amazing
hat, but it us take time. And so when I was doing these
live events, it took a lotof prep work in those three weeks,
Like I had to make sure Igot all your sizes. We were in
communication like crazy. I had toshape the hat or you know, size
the hats beforehand. And then Igot there and that's when we dealt the
designing and decorating and I even shapedthem on your heads, and like that
(09:16):
was a tester. I was like, can I do this live? And
it worked? And then I didmore and we did more hat parties,
and it was just like I thinkthat was the breaking point of this could
be bigger than what it is already, and it's already getting bigger and bigger
every single day. And like thatsounds braggy and I don't like to sound
like that, but like it's justhow it ended up happening. It's just
(09:37):
natural, and I don't know, like that was that was the turning point
of my company. And I loveit too because I feel like you were
so humble when it comes to likeyour craft and what you do. Yeah,
and I'm over here, like, girl, these are real. People
need to see these, like peoplewant these. There are people like specifically
in country music that wear hats likethat's their thing. Yeah, like this
(10:01):
is huge. Yeah, and you'reyour own worst critic, you know,
Like I criticize my artwork constantly.I'm not. Nothing is perfect, but
that's what the beauty of it,Warren Western Luxury. It's imperfect. It
look you're not buying and it's lookingbrand spank and new, Like you're getting
something that feels like there's been personalityalready added to it as character. Yeah,
there's character to it and so thatYeah, thanks well, And I
(10:24):
love it here too because Franklin issuch a staple in Nashville. Yeah,
When people come to visit Nashville, they want to visit Franklin Main Street,
and Franklin is just one of thosetouristy spots where people they just want to
come because Franklin has so much historyalready that being here and walking the streets
and you're literally a block away fromMain Street. Ye, Franklin Park here,
(10:46):
go to lunch on Main Street allthe time, Like, yes,
it's crazy how close I am.When you sort of started getting that feeling
of like I need a storefront,I want to be in Nashville, You've
literally lived in North Carolina, yourkids every week, it was home for
you and uprooting all of that andbeing like, you know what, I'm
(11:07):
going to take this step. Howwas that emotionally for you? Because I
know it with kids and family notbeing here, Yeah, it's hard.
Yeah. And the beauty of itis, like William and I don't have
didn't have families super close by.I mean two and a half hours that's
that's pretty close. And then myfamily's in Georgia and so we're kind of
used to that already. Now we'veadded a lot more distance since then,
(11:30):
but this all happened again. Mystory is kind of an accident and then
like happy accident and like I'm blessedby it. But I was supposed to
be on a flight leaving Nashville atfive am, and that flight got delayed
by six hours, and we hadbeen looking for different places. We had
been in contact with a few differentpeople just to like see, and I
(11:54):
was like, if nothing shows, then it's just a sign it's not meant
to be. Yet I'm not goingto force it, you know, And
I finally was like the flight Icanceled, and I called my husband.
I said, I'm just gonna geton your flight because he was here for
business already, and we're just gonnaride home together. And within that six
extra hours of being here, wehad two different phone calls to come see
(12:15):
two different places, and it waslike we got home, we talked about
it, and I said that wouldn'tlike that's not normal, Like that doesn't
just happen, you know, calla coincidence, call it whatever you want,
call it fate, like I don'tknow, Like it was so crazy,
and so we uprooted. And Idon't even want to say uprooted,
because I still serve my clients inNorth Carolina at the David's location, back
(12:37):
and forth. That's a lot.But I love it. I absolutely love
doing it. But you know,it takes a toll on my family,
right, but we uprooted everybody prettyquickly, you know. And I was
thinking my kids were gonna have thishuge adjustment period. My family was gonna
have a huge adjustment period. We'regonna have to get used to travel and
like some of us not being thereall the time. And like, my
(13:00):
kids are so happy and they loveit, and they say all the time,
we live in Tennessee now. Welive in Tennessee now, And like
they call Nashville Batman calls Nashville Batmansitting and he thinks this like the coolest
thing because of the Batman building andyou know it just he is obsessed with
it here. And so honestly, that's made the transition very easy, right
(13:22):
for us, because we all feelwarm and cozy, yeah, you know,
and settled. Like I love towhen you talk about how everything just
kind of happened organically, because youknow, my story and like my story
doesn't make sense either, Like I'vetalked about my you know, my journey
through radio, and like what's happenedto me in my life, and I
always say, like whenever I prayto God, I'm like, slam the
(13:45):
door shut that's not supposed to open, and open the ones like fling it
wide open without fail, like justlet me walk through it. Let me
just know confidently that that's the doorI'm supposed to walk through. All the
other ones, just slam them shut. And it's like almost in this story
of yours, Yeah, it's likeGod was like, hey, being in
North Carolina is amazing. Yeah, but I'm gonna go ahead and close this
store for you because I have somethingbetter for you. And I just I'm
(14:07):
so excited because this is literally thebeginning Sadie James had co here in I'm
just Nashville, I know. Andthat's and this was one of the things
we had in common when we firststarted dating. Me and my husband was
Nashville. Like we both wanted tobe here so bad and his job is,
you know, all over the region, and this brought us here and
like it's just a full circle moment, even from like down to like the
(14:31):
marketing that I wasn't super into,Like I loved it, I was good
at it again, but like itwas one of those things where I was
able to take that and put itinto this business. Every single thing like
has been connected and everything that I'vedone, and that is the weirdest thing
to think about. Yeah, youthink back to every move you've made,
you know, the journey you took, and like when they all connect like
(14:52):
that and you had no idea inthe process that it was happening, it
blows your mind. It's funny howgrowing up we have these like connect dots,
you know, like it's like one, two, three, and it
makes a big star. Uh huh. We're in a real life like connect
the dots drawing, trying to figureout where we're going, and it's making
this big picture. Is crazy tolike watch the journey happen and you're like,
(15:15):
oh, that's why I went there, or that's why I learned marketing.
Yeah, or that's why I metBrooke in college, you know what
I mean. Yeah, it's justcrazy and I know, and you can
literally look at every single thing andconnect it to what you're doing, whether
it's a lesson learned or whether it'snot a lesson learned, and it's just
something something happens in your life toget you to something else. And like
guess it's you know, it's kindof weird to think about the fact of
(15:35):
Okay, well, what what's thatnext connection? Like what's the next dot?
And I don't like to think thatway because I don't I like to
live in the moment and like behere with what I'm doing. But like,
seriously though, I mean, ifall of these things connected, like
and that is the next what isthe next connection? It's kind of creepy
to think about, but in agood way. Well, I have to
say for this podcast specifically, um, we talk about the things too,
(16:00):
yep, backstage, what people don'tsee behind the scenes, because for a
business, we love to talk aboutthe success story, but there's got to
be bumps oh along the road. You know. What are some of the
hard things that you think as abusiness owner that you've learned along the way
that you're like, man, ifI could just go back and change this,
(16:21):
or if I could, you know, maybe react to this differently,
Like what would that look like foryou? To be completely honest, I
don't know if there's anything that Ipersonally would go back and change, so
much as maybe reactions. You know, there's been like a lot of sleepless
nights. There's been a lot oflate nights that either took procrastination because of
(16:45):
my life, my personal life.I mean, I'm raising two very young
kids, there are two years apart, both five and under, you know,
and it's that that takes enough ofa toll on you personally. But
there's been a lot of tears,been a lot of question. It's been
a lot of money. You know, any marriage, money will drive a
wedge in a second. I'm I'mso lucky to have the family that I
(17:08):
have and like the support that Ihave behind this business, but sometimes it
didn't feel worth it, you know, And that's what you need to know
with every business owner. Yeah, they're human. They can't just crack out
what you need them to crack outin a second, and especially when they
have multiple clients. There's been Iput a lot on myself in the beginning
(17:29):
that I wish I wouldn't have,Like I tried to rush things in the
beginning and not let them happen naturally. So I think with that, like
those are the types of things thatyou learn as you go and then you
just develop, especially being a businessowner, you start to develop and like
it's the stressful moments have made thebusiness not feel worth it. But then
(17:49):
when you get through that, likejust be strong enough to get through it,
and when you are through it,you're like what was I thinking?
Well, And that's with anything andlike to like, if you get in
a fight in your relationship, forexample, it sucks being in it,
but once you get through it,you almost become stronger and your unit gets
bigger. And same with what you'regoing through as a business owner. I
(18:11):
mean, like there's not a manualfor Sadie James hat Co Like this is
you. You know, I'm creatingthe manual. Yes, you really have
to just kind of take yeah, roll with the punches. Yeah. And
I think that as a friend,I can tell you that you do it
so gracefully, like from a bird'seye view of like outside in you're crushing
(18:33):
it and you handle everything with suchgrace, like when your kids are around,
I mean you're working simultaneously along withlike hey, you're not supposed to
do that, or hey, likemommy loves you, you know. Yeah,
And I think that you and yourhusband really kind of I mean,
you guys support each other so much, and the fact that you're able to
just be like, hey, trustme, this is my dream and for
(18:56):
him to be supportive on that,I mean, I think that's just so
beautiful and I just love that foryou guys. He's such a big cheerleader
too, and that's been so helpful. It's like he finds what I'm doing
to be so cool and he's likehe's almost like my fan, you know.
And that's the crazy part. It'slike, there is the business side
of William, you know, that'slike, all right, let's talk about
(19:18):
this this in this order. Andthen it's there's the fan side where he's
just like do it, Like goto the if you have to be there
late tonight. I got the kids, go to the studio. And then
the mom guilt kicks in and thenI'm like, I don't know, and
then you know, it's just momguilt is literally the most annoying, the
most tragic feeling in the world. So it's so awful and like why do
(19:40):
we have it? Like why whydo you? I feel like there was
always and I mean I would saywithin the last like a couple decades,
right, women really have started tocarry their own in a way, yeah,
and have dreams and goals and businessesand careers and having a mother heart,
like your motherly instinct and those emotionsthat you carry along with being a
(20:04):
mom. Yep. I think havingthis new wave of opportunities for women and
it's like, how do we stillbe a homemaker but also accomplish a jam
that we've got and make sure thatwe're balancing both gracefully. It's hard,
I know, and like the outsidepressure that comes into being a mom.
(20:29):
At the end of the day, your kids just want to feel loved,
they want to feel supported, theywant to feel a part of it,
you know. Like my kids,My kids constantly talk about my studio,
Like they played house the other day. And I don't know whether this is
a good thing or a bad thing, but they played house the other day
and they're like, all right, come on, time to get up.
We're going to the studio. Andit was just so adorable and it was
(20:52):
so funny to see. But theyget it, you know, and they
know that like if I'm going tothe studio and their home like out of
school or whatever the case may be, they're coming with me and they're gonna
play and they have they have toyshere, literally, like we have toys
here, and then they know thatthey're gonna go get an ice cream after
and we're gonna go to playground anddo our thing. And it's like,
yeah, it's routine. It's aroutine for them, but they feel a
(21:15):
part of it, like they feelproud of it, you know, And
it's just I don't know. It'sone of those things where I just can't.
I wouldn't have any other way,you know, because they're seeing me
work and I'm proud of what I'mdoing, and I'm proud of them,
you know. And I'm watching themgrow up and it's not getting in the
way and they're seeing, yeah,William do his own thing, You do
your own thing, and knowing thatyou're allowed to be successful in both lanes.
(21:40):
And I love that. And solike, if I have anything to
say to these working moms or momswanting to start a business, or anybody
with a dream, like if youhave a passion or a dream, whether
it's art, business, creativity, like whatever it is, you're gonna figure
it out because if it's meant foryou, it's gonna happen for you.
Yeah, somebody said the other day, I can't remember what the quote was,
(22:03):
but it was basically like, ifyou have dreams, do work.
Yes, yeah, yeah, itwas if you're going to be a dreamer,
you better be a doer. LaneyWilson said that, yes, okay,
And I read that and I wasjust like, that is so true
because a lot of people will say, well, my dream is to this,
and it's like, well, whathave you done to go towards that
dream? And you really do haveto do a lot of work, a
lot of sacrifice. There's a lotof commitment, there's a lot of figuring
(22:27):
things out. But if you're notdoing something, the dream's never going to
come true. That's the thing. If it's in God's path and in your
lane, it's going to work, and the sacrifices are going to be worth
it. And sometimes those sacrifices arekeeping you from making that you know,
wrong turn, you know what Imean. So it's like there's just so
(22:48):
many elements to it and so manythings that I've learned and grown over the
few years that this has been happening, and it just it feels it feels
so good even through the bad,you know, like it feels so good
to know, like, even throughthe bad times, even through the stressful
times, even through the times whereI'm like throwing my hands up and I
still haven't figured that out. Istill have to figure out how to how
(23:08):
to manage that yet, you know, I'm still learning. But like even
through those times, it's like thefirst time in my life, this is
right. Yeah, like the weather, whatever, Kirby Road, I've ever
been down, this is right. And I will continue to make hats until
my hands literally can't do it anymore. I love that, you know.
But like well, and like fullcircle moment too, where we reconnected,
(23:32):
right, we reconnected. We startedtalking about things. You were like tell
me about radio, telling me aboutthis. I was like, tell me
about Sadie James. Like we werejust, yes, collectively talking about everything
that was going on in our lives. And then a light bulb went off
and we're like, let's put apodcast studio in the Sadie James storefront and
like just crush it together. Yeah, And that's literally we're sitting in the
(23:55):
Sadi James like my very first podcastwhatever with you, and we're here.
So if you ever come make ahat with Chelse, yeah, you are
going to be able to see whereliterally where we're sitting recording this right now.
It's so cool. I know,it's so fun. It's so fun,
and don't get us start like ifyou get me me and brook on
like a night out or like justa girl's night or whatever, the ideas
(24:18):
are going to start flowing. It'sdangerous. We're like, hey, what
about this or what about Like we'vegot things written down in our vision on
our vision boards that we're gonna comeback to this podcast in like a year
and a half and be like, hey, remember when we said that.
Yeah, I know, and likefull full light bulb moments like I feel
like if someone could like see thelight bulbs in our head, it would
just be like a whole chandelier aboveus. And I like that's why we
(24:42):
say that we're each other's people becausewe're such dreamers. I know. We
just you have a dream and we'relike you're gonna do that. And you
have dream and I'm like, you'regoing to do that exactly, and like
the encouragement like honestly, also fromanother businesswoman and like female owners, you
know, all those types of thing. Sometimes it's nice to not hear it
from people that you're with every singleday. And hear it from somebody who
(25:03):
is kind of in the same boatas you. Yeah, and like if
if I need advice, how manytimes have I come to you? Like
you know, I don't want toget on your nerves, but here I
am, And like you're always You'realways like dude, go do it do
and if it doesn't work, itdoesn't work. But like, I mean,
this here, like this, thiswas so this is so cool to
like this was such a little brainchild. And then when you got the
(25:26):
storefront and then started to design it, like I get chelse full creative control
over this room too, so herand somebody else behind the scenes. M
like they took this room and justran with it and it I mean it
is me. We just I know. That's the thing. Is like we
wanted it to speak to your personalityand be like loud and fun and bright
and still have that feel of Nashvilleand like it's dope. Yeah, it's
(25:49):
dope. That's dope. It's dope. It's so dope, but it is.
It's so dope. And I saydope so much so they put this
little side behind me right here, and that's dope. This is everybody's favorite
room. Like I had. Ihad some guests in here the other day
from out of town, and Iwas showing them the studio, the whole
studio, showing them this is wherewe landed to sit and just have a
(26:12):
conversation. I love it, youknow what I mean, That's what we
wanted wanted this room for. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, it's just a
hangout. And this is like theit's so fun, it's bright, it
makes you happy. There's a smileyface literally in here, you know,
Like, yeah, so I meanthis, this is awesome. And the
fact that you and I like talkedabout this and we've been planning it up
(26:34):
for so long and like now it'shere, it's crazy. Well and what
else is here is you just hadyour grand opening parties for Sadie James.
Yes, officially opening your books.Yeah, for appointments in Nashville. This
has been something I mean, you'vebeen talking about since what January? Yeah,
(26:55):
well in Nashville's kind of been thedream since Sadie James kind of came
about. But I never thought itwas a reality, you know, like
I was talking about earlier. Um, but yeah, this is like we're
officially open for appointments. You canbook your appointment online. Um, we
also are gonna have retail hours andstuff that you go to our instagram and
find all that stuff out. Butlike we're gonna have like shopping you can
(27:17):
shop off the wall, which isthe first for me. Yeah, these
are gonna be pre made hats thatcame straight from my vision, straight from
my head, and you can justcome in and like get that instant gratification
if you don't want to wait foryour hat to be made, you know.
So, yeah, it's this isa lot is crazy. I mean
the studio is so fun too.Yes, you walk in here and you
know, I kind of wanted itsilly as it sounds, but I wanted
(27:37):
there to be like an Instagram momenteverywhere you turned, you know, which
so smart. And that's the otherthing with my hats, Like I wanted
to speak to my brand, likeI want to view from every angle.
You don't just get something just poppedon your hat and then you don't have
anything else around it. Like there'sa view from every angle with every hat.
So we wanted the studio to speakto that. So like if you
come in here, keep that inmind. Like that's that's the other part
(28:00):
is I'm telling you, like,if you're in Nashville, if you're anywhere
near Nashville, if you're coming toNashville for I mean, it happens bachelorte
parties, if you're coming for afun weekend or cmafest or whatever concert you're
coming to, you're just taking atrip. You have to put this in
your itinerary because I just feel Ifeel like, I mean, people just
(28:21):
have to see your work in person, like it speaks for itself online.
But y'all, when I tell you, when you just walk into the studio
and you just you smell like theleather straps, you smell the when you
burn like the hats, is likethe coolest thing to me. But I
feel like it smells so good insuch a weird way. Yeah, what
you recognize that so you think aboutthat smell too, Like that's the cool
part. And it just seeing itall come to life in person, like
(28:45):
for real, it's so cool. And I just I feel like more people,
like, if you're coming to Nashville, you gotta come. You're gonna
be in Franklin walking in Main Streetanyway, walk a block over and come
to the studio because it is justit is so cool. I hope I
hope you come. I really do. I hope anybody that comes near here
stops here, and you know Iwill welcome you with open arms. I
(29:06):
want this place to feel like homefor you. And so it's an experience.
It's an experience in many, manydifferent ways. So I'm gonna let
you take that cheerleader moment like becauseI can't. I'm still about thank you.
I'm so funny because you said itearlier, like we're our own worst
critics and you're just like me,which is why we're friends. I'm terrible
at taking compliments and I know that, like it's not a strong suit of
(29:29):
yours anyway either, and like ourwhatever gut reaction, our instinct is to
just deflect. But you freaking takethat compliment because your work is amazing.
And I will literally come to Nashvilleand come to say, James or Brooke
is coming out ahead in Nashville.I'm adding it to your itinerary myself.
(29:51):
Oh my gosh. Okay, beforewe wrap up, I want to talk
about you as a business owner, you as a mom. Somebody listening right
now that just needs a little kickin the pants. A little piece of
advice or something that you've learned alongthe way that you think would benefit somebody
else who maybe is like having troublestarting a dream. So one of my
(30:11):
biggest pet peeves is when I hearpeople say you can't do it all.
And at the end of the day, if you put your mind to it,
you can do it all. Andthere are ways to structure your life,
and there are ways to make itall happen. And sometimes there are
unnecessary things that you don't realize needto be cut that you can cut,
or habits that you have that needto just kind of not be priority anymore.
(30:37):
That yes, And I hate whenpeople look at you and say you
can't do it all. You cando anything you want. If I'm the
biggest person, if I see someonewith a talent, everybody has a talent.
Stop telling yourself you don't have atalent or you don't know what you
would be if you weren't this.If it's not your passion, if it's
not your dream, if it's notsetting your soul on fire, there's some
(31:00):
thing that does, and you knowwhat it is. You just are ignoring
it, Like, stop ignoring it. Do it because if it makes you
happy and it fills your cup, you're gonna figure it out. You can
do it all, like you literallycan do it all. Yes, ma'am,
I just like snap lap say it. Laugh made it so much.
Yes, it's funny because there wasthis um, this trainer. I went
(31:23):
to Orange Theory when I lived inChicago, and this trainer at Orange Theory,
you're on the treadmill. Have youever been in an orange cherry class?
I have not been in one myself, but I have so many friends
that have told me all about them. That's what my face looks like after
taking one. I mean I hearthat they're hard. I hear that.
So there's no section where you're likeon the treadmill, right, It's like
you have the treadmill, you're onthe rose or you're on the floor doing
(31:45):
like weights or body whatever. SoI'm on the treadmill, and anytime I'm
on the treadmill, I mean it'syour your mind goes into this like mode
of like I can't, I can't, I can't I stop, can't stop.
And I remember and anytime I'm everwere struggling with anything, I just
remember her saying, yes you can, Yeah, and it would not be
preempted like with anything that was happening. It would just be like throughout the
(32:07):
class, she'd be like, yesyou can. Yeah, I know your
mind's going there right now, butyes you can tell it that you can
because it's true. It's so true. And you take every circumstance by the
circumstance, every situation by the situation. Don't combine them all. That's just
gonna do nothing but make you feellike it's not worthy, or it's it's
too much, or you can't doit. It's like you're on the treadmill.
(32:30):
Your focus needs to be on thetreadmill. There is nothing else you
can handle in that moment. It'sthe same thing, like take that situation
of I'm on the treadmill, I'mgonna get through this, and I'm gonna
do it, you know, becausethe minute you say I can't do this
is the minute your whole body shutsdown. And it's crazy how your mind
can do that. Your mind canliterally be like not today and you just
(32:50):
shut down like somebody unplugged you.Yeah, like what exactly? And like
you're not always going to have gooddays. You're not. It's not always
rainbows and butterflies. It's just notlike and there's Those are the days where
you take it by the situation andyou say, you know what, maybe
today I turn it off, Like, I mean that happened to me today.
I'm like getting text messages here andthere and like things are not going
(33:10):
my way, things are getting canceled, and I'm like Chelsea. And then
I remember Andrew texting me. He'slike, Babe, I'm really sorry that
this is happening, blah blah blah. And I'm like, no, it's
not going to ruin my day.No, today, see me a great
day. Yep. Today is I'mgonna crush it. I'm gonna go do
what I've got to do. Andand it really is a mindset thing.
Yeah. And then now we're herehaving these motivational conversations and we're probably gonna
(33:31):
go and like make like something specialto something is about to happen. Something
we have like changed the energy ofthe day just doing this, you know,
because you got up and you gothere. Yes, like get up,
get there, and yes you canyea hold it done, get it
done. I love it. Okay, Well, this was kind of one
of our ideas that we came upwith that is now on the podcast.
(33:52):
I've got this gumball here, agumball machine here in the studio where I've
got a bunch of questions in thegumballs, and there's one waiting for you
at the end of the tunnel ifyou want to pick that bad boy up.
And these are all just random questionsthat I put in other guests to
put in. You're going to getto put some in here in just a
minute. So I'm excited to seewhat this question says. I'm like nervous.
(34:15):
Why am I so nervous? Becauseit's the unknown. The unknown is
never reckon. This whole thing wasthe unknown for me. Here it is
what is your biggest insecurity? Ohlord, I'm definitely an overthinker, but
I don't feel like that's a biginsecurity Like I feel like in my later
(34:37):
days anxiety has gotten the best ofme. Yeah, I would say having
grown up an athlete at a highlevel and always being super fit and always
like just I don't know, justalways having this specific look about me that
was very athletic, and then becominga mom and in my body yeah right,
(35:01):
but like to the to the everything, everything happens afterwards. Yeah,
I think that that, like thatchange of my life took over everything.
It was. It was this changeand like my mentality, it was this
change, and how I talked topeople, it was this change, and
how like I carried myself, whatI wore, like shopping, I like
(35:24):
every single avenue was affected by that. And it wasn't like I don't know,
it was just this co combination oflike becoming happier person and finding my
path and being lucky enough to beable to live it out that all of
that just kind of you know, took a back seat, and like I
(35:45):
was able to like find myself again. But then there's still times where I
like, I'll be like even here, I was like, do I look
at crazy now? You know whatI mean? Like, I think,
I think that's my biggest insecurity becauseit affects so much else in your life.
Well, And I think that wereally bonded about this when we like
reconnected because we were up at sixam doing workouts before school before class.
(36:07):
Before then then we're you know, three then three hour practices in the afternoon,
we could eat whatever we wanted becausewe were working out four hours a
day all the time, and lookingback, it's like I always remember waking
up we did these pool workouts.Yeah, these pool workouts that we did,
(36:27):
and I would always remember waking upafter the like during these pool workouts
or like our weight training like stuffthat we did. And I would always
say, I bet you when Iget older, I'm gonna love sleeping in
because I never got to growing.Yeah, because in high school, I
mean, we were athletes. Wewere always training, trying to do whatever
we could practice before school, practiceafter yell. And now it's like,
if I have the option of goingto the gym or sleeping, I'm picking
(36:50):
sleeping every time, every single time, way too much, every single time.
That is it is wild how somany people's postpartum journeys are so different,
and I know that ours is verysimilar into where it's like our bodies
changed a ton. Yeah, wewere insecure about things we used to never
even think about being insecure about.Likely there are photos. I'm gonna have
(37:12):
to find them and put them inthis little episode. Right here, I'll
see at a photo shoot on alake. I can't if your photo here.
It was okay, cringe ef.We were living our best lives.
We were living our best lives andwe were working that photo shoot. We
really were. I'm like one ofour friends in photography class and he was
(37:36):
like, hey, can you guysdo a photo shoot for me? And
we brought outfit changing Yeah, cowboyboot, cowboy boo. Yes, we
were manifesting Nashville before we even anotheranother dot. But it is so funny
where it's like, you know, postpartum can be a yeah, I'm gonna
it can be a real bitch.Yeah, it really can. It can,
And I think that's the best wayto put it, honestly. But
(37:57):
it's the best thing. Which isso crazy because I know that sometimes when
I talk about postpartum in my journeyand things like that, there's some negativity
that comes along with it, right, But I just never want people to
lose sight of the fact that itis the hardest, most amazing thing that's
ever happened. Oh my gosh,it does. Absolutely. Absolutely. It's
like one of those things where youjust deal with because you, I mean,
(38:20):
you don't just deal with not everybodyjust deals with it. Everybody's journey
is different, let me specify that. But like for me personally, being
a mom has been one of it'sso fun. Yeah, it's so fun
to watch them grow. And nowthat they're communicating and like talking to me
and like understanding more, it's justit's even more fun to like see what
their little minds are thinking and doing. And so I don't want that to
(38:44):
take away from being a mom.But it really did affect me, and
it affected how I did business,It affected how I like went out,
It affected like every avenue of mylife. Like how can that one thing?
But then you think about it.You've been told old what to do
in sports your entire life. Yeah, now you're suddenly required to do it
(39:04):
on your own. And you're like, uh, is there a workout manual?
Is there a is there a babymanual? Is there a mom manuals?
Where that I can I can dothe moves, but I couldn't put
a workout together for myself ever, you know, And so I don't.
And it's not even just about workingout, like it's about the mental state
too and everything else. But Ithink, yeah, I think that that
would have been my biggest insecurity thatI've really so so happily am overcoming,
(39:25):
have overcome a lot, still workwith it on a day to day but
like it happens. Yeah, AndI think a lot of people, especially
with like what we do, youknow, you're in front of people all
the time, You're having to nowdo social media stuff all the time.
Yeah, And same for myself. There there was a period after MMA was
born that I like kind of disappearedoff of socials and in person events and
(39:50):
like hosting stuff because genuinely, mylike confidence to this big hit and Andrew
my husband would say to me allthe time like when are you, Like
when are we gonna get your confidenceback? Like where are you good for
him too? You know? AndI'm like, I don't know where am
I high? Yeah? And it'ssuch a weird thing to think about because
there are so many talented people inthis industry and within not just radio but
(40:15):
like entertainment or social influencing things likethat. There's so many amazing people.
But it's hard when you're feeling likeyou're the only one who is who's got
a you know, a thire roll. Yeah. Everyone else looks so amazing
on these red carpets, and I'mlike I don't want to go, Like
I don't even want to ask togo because I'm I'm feeling some type of
way about it, which is sobackwards. Yeah, but I really have
(40:38):
over the last same like you startto like evolve into just being like this
is me, it's me, thisthis made my child, and I'm gonna
I'm rocking it. And you haveto be in the moment with it,
whether you like it or not,Like tomorrow's never promised, and you got
to be in the moment every singleday with yourself, with your life,
(40:58):
with what the situations that are happening. Just be in the moment with it,
you know. One and listen, weighing over two hundred pounds, there
are girls that weigh under one hundredand fifty pounds, one hundred and ten
pounds. That's still look in inthere and they're like, oh yeah,
if I like my body right now. So it's like it's such a normal
thing for literally everybody, all shapes, all sides, yeah, men,
women, everything, all shapes, all sizes, and like I'm just speaking
(41:21):
from our my situation and you know, like you said, our situation and
that's just where you know, whereit developed. And so yeah, I
think that get out there. IfI have to say anything else, do
it. Just do the thing,Like there is a thing that you're wanting
to do. Do the thing.Be a good human and do the thing.
You know like you can all fallinto play. Yes, I love
(41:45):
it. Okay, well, SadieJames Hatco. Yep, you guys got
